Welcome back everyone. Today's video comes to us from Missouri where a conservation agent received a report from a concerned property owner about an individual trespassing on their land while committing turkey hunting violations. In Missouri, the spring turkey hunting season runs from April 20th to May 10th [music] and during the first week individuals are only allowed one turkey for the entire week. Also of note during the spring hunting season hunters are only allowed a maximum of one turkey per person per day. With that said, the conservation agent responded to the location where he made contact with a witness. >> I heard this afternoon. >> I'm pretty good. How are >> Yeah, good. Tyler. >> Nice to meet you. >> Nice to meet you. >> I talked to she said to drive on in there. >> Yeah. >> Um, were you over here this morning? >> I know she didn't want to give my name, but yeah, I was over there. >> So, what happened? >> I went down, I found the walnut grove she was telling me about. >> Is that where it happened at? >> It's a little bit to the left of this walnut grove. >> Okay. So, like on the other side of the creek? >> Yeah, so yeah. And I I have no problem showing where it's at if you want to see it. No big deal. We were We were down in the bottom kind of that creek runs all the way through. We're set up against creek. As we walk in from our farm, we walk up and over and we're set up top heard a gobble went down in there. Got the decoy set up and we're sitting there and there's gobbling coming our way. We're like oh, this about 30 minutes taking sweet old time and boom. What? I saw I slid up seeing one strutting there again. And sure enough two more minutes, boom. And we're like what the heck? Cuz I talked to boyfriend or I talked to he said he was hunting over here in what we call the new ground. So, I knew it wasn't him. I was like oh, we'll walk over there and sure enough he was over there. Which that's why I didn't want to make a big deal cuz I work with him. >> Okay. >> So, I'm like when I walked [clears throat] up to him, he knew he was gone. I mean, just one of them things. >> So, you knew who he was and he knew who you were. >> Exactly. >> Where did they come in from? Do you know? >> So, you see this fence that comes down the hill there? That is his, I think I want to believe >> Is that Steedam or Steinam or something? >> Steinman, yeah. That's his relation, grandpa's, uncle, something. >> Okay. >> So, if if I was to if I was betting man, that's where I'd say he just came over the hill and >> Okay. >> crossed. >> So, two separate shots, it wasn't like a >> No, it was >> boom and accidentally dropped two. >> No, it was a boom. I would say a minute or two and I seen the one strutting. Cuz I sat back down there. I'm like, oh. And then boom and there's two different feather piles that are 20 25 yards apart. >> They're all >> Yeah. >> Okay, that's what I was looking for down there. >> Yeah, I I didn't look for shells or anything, but I just seen the two piles cuz we walked up on one pile. >> Okay. >> But, I did I was going to look for some mushrooms down there and I I just walked over there to see if there was two piles to confirm my beliefs. >> Okay. Hmm. Well, I would like to put eyes on that. That's that's kind of why I went down there. >> Yeah, I and I we were over there and and I figured it That's why I turned around. I'm like, I I know didn't mention my name, but >> No, she >> Yeah. >> I have I just didn't want to make a big deal cuz like I said, I work with him every day and >> Day off? >> We're both third shift guys and we both took off today. >> Okay, I got you. Got you. >> [snorts] >> Um >> Like I said, I just live right here. I can go get a side by side so it's easier or >> Yeah, I I didn't have much trouble until right here. >> Yeah. >> And we can go around the other way. It'd be either way. >> Would that be better? >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> It would be. >> Yeah, would you mind showing that to me? >> Absolutely. I have no problem with it. >> Okay. You want me to just follow you >> It don't matter. If you want me to ride with you or >> You can jump in. I don't care. Yeah. How long you been doing this for? >> I've been on 14 years. >> I guess you like it if you've been on 14 years. >> Yeah, I do. I enjoy it. >> Is one of the things that catch you off guard in the morning? >> Yeah, absolutely. Well, and it's it's so dangerous. >> Right. >> Guys in full camouflage and we're not wearing any orange. >> Right, absolutely. Just follow the path? >> Yeah, you go to show. >> Straight and then we'll just go straight over the hill. >> Okay. >> Is that the only bird you guys heard this morning? >> Um Well, once this happened, we went back over to our farm on the other side and you can just head straight over the hill. Uh we had another one. We heard we heard some jakes and then had another one just all of a sudden come up right on top of us. >> Yeah. >> Take a right going in between us kind of fast. >> Um it came up behind us and got up to about 100 yards and just wanted us to come to him. He just stopped and kept fanning and you could hear him drum. And then, I said, he just stopped and then was done messing with us. Uh actually, if you want to park right here, I'll show you right where >> All right. I wasn't too far off. >> No. >> I walked all that. >> All down here? >> Yeah. >> It's actually on this side. So, I guess that we were We were just right down right down there. >> Kind of by the big dead tree? >> Yeah, kind of by the big dead tree. >> Okay. >> And then Here we go. Our old feathers right here. And then the other pile is over here. >> Where did you see him at? When you saw him? >> Once we um Once we heard the second shot, we walked over here and he was over here by this second pile and and we kept talking right here. >> Was this bird still here? >> So, he had one in his hand. I think it was. He had one picked up and I could see the other one and he had one of his bags on. I could see the other one. >> He had a vest? He had a vest? >> could see it was another one. >> Yeah. >> There's the wall. >> Yeah. >> He had to been in that creek, huh? >> That's what I'm guessing. Like I said, we were down there. We heard that first shot. I stood up and I seen one. This one drummed out strutting right here and then that's when I lost sight of it. It was heading this way. Hey. >> I wonder cuz you said you saw one over here. >> Yeah. >> So, I wonder if that was the first one and this was the second one maybe. >> If I was that man, that's what I would have said. >> [snorts] >> And where did he go after you guys talked? >> We I don't know I really didn't watch him. We talked and just kind of like, "Well, what do you do now?" and we just walked back and then picked up our decoys and >> Okay. >> got our stuff and started walking. >> But he was the only one here. >> Yeah. >> For sure. >> Yeah. >> [snorts] >> Okay. >> Yeah, he was He was picking up this bird when we came up around he walked over here and met us. >> Okay. But you could see in his in his pack that I mean, it's pretty hard to hide a 20-lb turkey. >> Right. And yeah, I could see. >> [snorts] >> Okay. What was that conversation like? Like, "What the hell are you doing?" or >> Not really. It was just kind of I know he To me, it was just he knew he got us. >> Got you. >> One of them. I wasn't going to get too frustrated about it. I mean, it sucks, but it's like like I said, I work with him. It was just one comment that threw me off which I kind of did not believe was "Oh, yeah, I hunt here all the time." No, you don't. >> Right. "I hunt here all the time." >> [snorts] >> This is the first time. >> Well, if he does hunt here all the time, he doesn't have permission. >> Exactly. >> So, kind of my plan is just to track him down. Is he still on? Is it Do you know where he went? That's the address I've got for it. >> I would say but I'm thinking it's in town. now. >> Um So, my plan is just to of go and and talk to him and see what he wants to tell me. Obviously, like you said. >> Right. He knew he was caught. >> Yeah. Um I'll do my best not to not to bring your name up, but again, he knows you know him, so >> yeah, it's >> You know, he could have injured somebody being that close to another hunter who has permission to be here. And that's why >> She wanted to report it like that. Perfectly fine. I know it'll be the assumption, but I said something to him. Oh, I did, but So, if someone was hunting on me and I would want to know. >> Yeah. >> It's just all the fact of the matter is. >> Yeah. So, as the landowner, I mean, that's she's the one that that took issue with it, right? You know? And it's just not fair. >> Absolutely. It's >> I mean, trespassing is one thing, especially when you know the folks and you can come to a gentleman's agreement, "Hey, don't do it again." But killing two birds on opening day is not fair to everyone else. Appreciate you showing me around. >> problem. If you have any questions, or found out anything >> Okay. >> I appreciate it, sir. >> Thank you. Good luck rest of the season. >> I hope so. Back out tomorrow. >> Yeah, hopefully it'll be better than today. >> Thank you. >> Take care. >> It's very obvious in the video that the guy didn't feel 100% comfortable working with the agent because he works with the guy and he doesn't want to be involved in a situation like this with a co-worker. However, he knew what the guy was doing was wrong and put him in a bad position and I think he did a good thing by working with the officer. If anything, I think the hunter who committed the violations really owes this guy an apology for putting him in this position to begin with. Now, let's see how the hunter handles the situation. >> Hello, sir. >> Yep. Hi, I'm Brown. [clears throat] How are you? >> Good, how are you? >> Good. I'm a conservation agent. >> Okay. >> Um I don't know you and you don't know me, but one thing I'll tell you about myself is I'm a real straight shooter. >> Okay. >> Okay? And if you'll be honest with me, I'll be fair with you. >> Okay. >> Okay? So, there was an incident this morning. >> Mhm. >> Um the landowner took exception to the fact that you didn't have permission to be over there and there was other people there that were very close by that it could have ended >> Mhm. >> worse than what it did. Right. >> [snorts] >> Turkey season's much more dangerous because we're not wearing hunter orange, right? >> Um and that's one of the things that we absolutely hate doing is is working those hunting accidents. >> Honestly, I'm a I'm a volunteer firefighter, too. So, I mean, I don't want to work anything else like that. >> Right. Right. Um Can you tell me what happened? >> I was So, my uncle borders them or my great uncle. >> Okay. >> And last 2 years there's been two birds down there. Um so, I was knew they were down there. Went down there. I did I crossed their fence, come around. >> Okay. >> I was probably about 100 yards on them from my uncle's. And that's all it was. >> Okay. At what point At what point did you decide that >> [snorts] >> you wanted to just go ahead and kill both your birds? Like, you know? >> Yeah. >> I Trespassing is is one issue and then >> cheating is kind of a different one, you know? >> It's just heat of the moment type deal. >> Yeah. The one come running in right on me. And I shot him. And then the other one come around. As soon as he started flopping, the other one broke and come out. >> Right. Just got caught up in it. >> Yeah. >> It happens. >> No, I get it. >> You know, we we all make mistakes. We've all We've all done stuff we regret. I appreciate you being honest with me. Um So, again, I told you I'd treat you fair. I'm going to cut you one ticket. >> Okay. >> Um with the understanding that um miss doesn't want you on the property, okay? >> I understand. >> Um you know, there's there's a number of violations with the trespassing and then uh the two two birds. And [snorts] then once you kill when a bird illegally, it then becomes illegally illegal to possess it. So, then that's another charge. So, I'm going to write you one for taking an over limit. I'm going to seize that second bird and we're going to call it good. Is that fair? >> Yep. I understand. >> Yeah, if you don't mind, grab it and >> have the carcass. I disposed >> You got the beard, the spurs, the meat, all of that? >> I don't have [clears throat] the spurs. I didn't take them off. >> Okay. But you got the beard and the meat. Okay. Okay. And you've got the other one as well? >> I do not [snorts] have it. It was a jake. I didn't >> Okay. Okay. So, you just took the meat? >> Yeah. >> Okay. Yeah, if you'll just grab the meat from the from the one and your ID >> Yep. >> and I'll meet you here at my trunk. All right. >> It's been cold. >> Yeah. Yes, we'll make sure somebody gets it. You want to jump in so we're not out in the open? It's up to you. Okay. I'll just get you out of here then. All right. So, the way this is going to work, I have to issue a court date, but that doesn't mean you have to appear. You can take care of it online. Yeah. So, one of the unfortunate things is you're done >> Mhm. >> for this case cuz those are your two birds, right? >> Okay. >> Um I'll go over this with you right quick. So, this is the date, time, and location of the incident, your personal information, a statute and regulation number for taking an over limit. That court date's July 1st at 9:00 a.m. here in Vienna. Um just need a signature by that X. It's not an admission of guilt, just stating that you understand what it's for. And then um if you want to take care of it prior to that court date and not show up, then there's going to be instructions here on how to do that. So, that'll give you the website you can go to. Give it about 2 weeks cuz I'm going to have to do my report and get it to the CA. Um so, give it a couple weeks. And then here's your copy. Then you can either look it up by name or that citation number there, okay? Do you have any questions for me? >> Okay. Sorry we had to meet like this. >> Sorry to meet you like that. >> Seem like a real good dude. We all make mistakes, so I one thing about me is I don't take things personal, so >> It is, man. I shouldn't have done it, but it was it was one of them things. >> Yep. Heat of the moment, but learn from it and I don't suspect we'll meet like this again. All right. Take care. >> You have a good one. >> In the end, the individual received one misdemeanor charge for taking or attempting to take over the legal turkey limit. He later submitted a written plea of guilty and was ordered to pay a total of $500 in costs and fines, which he later paid. Of note, he also received 12 points to his fishing and hunting license. Now, I think from the video we can all agree the officer could have pursued additional charges, but chose not to. Had this case taken place in Florida, it's very likely that he would be facing a felony charge for armed trespassing. Anyways, that's it for today's video, but we'd love to hear what you think. Do you think the officer should have pursued additional charges or do Do think the one charge was sufficient given the levels of cooperation that were involved?
