An officer with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources was on patrol when he spotted four walleye being loaded into a truck with three people. At that time and location, each angler was only allowed to keep one walleye. >> I'm in a traffic stop with a black Silverado parking lot of what used to be Edward Jones off of all of Wisconsin truck plate on your right. State wardens, how are you guys doing? >> Good, dude. >> Not too bad. Uh say reason I'm stopping you guys is with four fish and three guys. So, somebody caught an extra one. Right? Who was that? >> That comes back to >> You? Do you guys have your fishing license? Okay. Yes, please. Any driver's license for you? You guys here? >> I'm with you. >> You're 15? Okay. >> I think that's my fault. >> Do you have a driver's license? >> I don't know if it's a license for you. >> Okay. Okay, I'm done. There's your phone back, I don't mind. Hang Hang on to that one. What's your birthday? >> Um Yeah. >> Okay. Do you know which two of those four are yours? >> I know the last one. >> You know the last one you caught? Is that the one that's not in the net? And were they all in the net and that one's flat? >> were all in the net. >> Okay. He's He's the one who caught it. >> down there, are you? >> What's that? >> You're not allowed got the one down there, are you? >> Uh you can land them and unhook them and then right back into the water. So, nothing longer than like taking a picture sort of thing. So. >> I thought it was illegal to land them. >> No, cuz I mean we'd basically from our sense like we wouldn't want you cut your line with, you know, feet of line hanging off of it and then it ends up getting stuck on something, right? So. Okay. Let me just check on licenses quick and I'll be back with you to talk to you a little bit more. And that one back field. You guys want to jump out and talk to me quick? Yeah, that one's still pretty lively. So, I'm guessing that's the most recent one. >> Yeah, most recent. >> Okay. You didn't know what one of the other ones? Okay. >> They all look the same size. >> Okay. Um, what time about that you catch the first one? >> The first one? >> Uh, >> earliest morning. >> Earliest morning? Okay. Did you guys take pictures of them when you caught them or no? >> No. >> Okay. Um, how earlier? When did you guys get over here? >> Uh, 7:00 at night. 7:00 or 8:00. >> 7:00? Okay. All right. Um, so you think was it pretty close to when you first got over here or >> Yeah, it was second cast I caught that first one. >> Okay. Um, so then kept fishing after that obviously. >> Yeah. >> Okay. So, then did they have their two when you had it? Just kind of walk me through how today went. >> So, I got here at about 7:00 or something. Caught that one and then we fished that night. We were just throwing them back. And then that little spot is kept. >> Okay. So, you caught other ones after the first one and released those ones. Okay. So, I guess what made you decide to keep this one then? >> I we just thought I just wanted another one for dinner tonight. >> Um, do you know what the limit is right now for walleye? >> Isn't it one? >> Yeah. Okay. So, just figured grab that one and get in the truck quick and head home. Okay. Uh, which one of Uh, let's see. You got four rods in here. Which one were you using? >> This white one. >> Okay. Could you fish that out of there for me? I'm not going to seize it. I just need to take some pictures. Is that the lure you were using most of the day or >> Uh, I lost the one. >> Okay. Was it pretty much that same style? >> I caught this one on that last fish. >> Okay. Well, we got all sorts of a mess now, hey? You hold them all. I'll mess this up, hopefully. All right. Can you put that one back together? All right. Um, do you think them guys are going to know which fish are theirs or really not? Okay. >> I think this is the one I caught this week. I don't know. It's going to be the one that looks the oldest. >> Sure. >> Like cuz this one got hit at his point. >> Right. You kept them in the water though and with that Yeah, so that helps keep them alive, too. So. Okay. Um, tell you what, grab whichever one your best guess is there and I was going to make a phone call quick. Muting camera for a phone call. All right. So, basically what's going to happen, um, like I said, I'm not going to seize your rod, but I do have to seize the fish cuz you're over bagged, okay? Um, and then you're going to receive a citation in the mail. Is your address still in Okay. That's what's on your your driver's license? >> Mhm. Yeah. >> All right. Just double check that real quick. Yeah, so basically what'll happen is will come in the mail to you. >> Okay. >> You will have a court date in Marinette County. Um, you don't have to show up at it if you don't want to. If you want to, obviously that's your right to do so. >> All right. >> Um >> Yeah, I'm I'm totally not like that. >> Okay. So, I mean obviously I have to explain that you're allowed to show up, sort of thing. >> Okay. >> Um, if you >> it mandatory? >> Nope, it's not. It's just if you want to, you you can. Um, if you want to take care of it through the mail, it'll explain on the back of the citation how to how to do that, basically. >> Okay. >> Um, so just make sure you do something with it or get in touch with the the clerk of courts before that court date. >> So, do I uh How do I pay the fine? >> It'll explain on the back of the citation how to do that. I think it's just mailing in a check to the clerk of court. Um >> Okay. >> But, yeah. So, if you have if anything comes up with it, I I don't really have any Once the ticket's issued, then it's all through the court system, you know. Um >> What is the fine for? >> I don't know what it is off the top of my head. I think since So, the thing with it is our over-bagging stuff goes on a scale. And with it being a one-fish limit and you keep an additional fish, then you're 100% over. >> Okay. >> You know, whereas like if it was a five-fish limit and you, you know, keep two of them, then you're only you're not 100% over, you know. But, with it being one and one, so I know it's five something, but I don't know exactly in exactly what it is off the top of my head, so. Um, so yeah, do you have any questions for me? >> No. >> Okay. >> Not. >> All right. I'll I'll get these over to a freezer and so they can be utilized later. >> All right. >> All right. What's that? >> You got to take both of them? >> Yep, the two that he caught. >> Oh, really? >> Yep, cuz it shows the it shows the over-bagging offense, cuz if we took one, then he could be like, "Well, that's the only one that I caught." Does that make sense? >> Cuz last year we got stopped cuz we fished at night and we had our limit. >> Mhm. >> But, then there was we we didn't know that you had to get rid of them, like get them out of your possession. >> Yep. we're over one. And he didn't take both. He just took the one that were over from cuz it's >> Cuz there was a Yeah, right. So, that's a possession limit violation though as opposed to a daily bag limit violation. So, since they're both of them were caught within the same day, both of them are illegal. Whereas, if you're over your possession limit, then they weren't both caught in the same day sort of thing. So, it's just the one that made you over the possession limit. So. >> What do you do with take fish? >> Uh I mean, you can keep them. It's just >> Say I caught a red tag. >> Sure. >> And I have a picture of it. >> Uh-huh. You can So, you can call it in um or like go on our website and just search for it. And then they'll basically just send you what the history of it was. So, whenever it was tagged, wherever >> the reward is 100 bucks or something like that. >> Oh, those I don't know if you end up having to keep You probably have to keep it to actually claim that then. >> Okay. >> Would be my guess. That I don't I don't know that off the top of my head. That'd be a fisheries or customer service sort of thing. >> Okay. >> So. >> So. >> Yeah. Do you guys have any questions for me? >> That's it. >> All right. Thanks, guys. >> Yeah. No problem. >> In the end, the angler was charged with possession of fish 76% or more over limit. He pled no contest to the charge and was adjudicated guilty. He was ordered to pay $562 in costs and fines, which he later paid.
