An officer with the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection was on patrol along the Connecticut River when he made contact with an individual to conduct a resource inspection. Yeah. Yeah. Perfect. Thank you. Rhode Island driver's license, okay. Um Have you ever had a Connecticut fishing license? I got one last year, but this year I I forgot to buy it. Okay. Um so, what I can do for you is Do you have a smartphone, like an iPhone, anything like that? Yeah, why? Oh, I will What I was going to say is um you if you can go online Mhm. uh you can buy one. Uh-huh. Um so, I can either give you a ticket for fishing without a license, right? Or you can go online and you can buy a uh Connecticut fishing license and I won't give you a ticket. But, you have to do that right now and show it to me. Uh I don't know how to do it. Okay. So, um uh if you have your phone and your wallet, I can show you how to do it. I think yeah. Luckily for you that there is no uh minimum limit or minimum length. I'm sorry, there's no minimum length, right? How many do you think you have in there? A lot of them. Okay. Um all right. So, again, I just got to count how many uh how many of these fish you got, all right? Um what I'm going to have you do is uh reel in your fishing rods cuz you're done for today. I'm going to give you this. This is the state of Connecticut fishing guide. If you come back when you fish in the state of Connecticut, please read this, okay? It will avoid all these situations, right? Then you won't be over your limit, okay? So I'm just going to give this to you. Go through it, highlight it, fold it, do whatever you need to do, but just, you know, you're an average fisherman, I can see that. Make that your Bible, okay? Especially for the Connecticut River, we're always we're just always out there. I don't know if it's king or not cuz I'll be I came back, yeah. Where where I can get, you know? I get the Just let you guys coming in here, but not you, you know, but somebody, but they give me I give them license, but where where I can get, you know, before? I >> [snorts] >> I know before you can >> know now. I don't know. Right, right. And I know you can buy it online. If you just go pull up your phone, go home, pull up it on pull it up on your computer, whatever, just go to d e e p fishing [snorts] license, just type that into Google and um it'll be pretty simple. You can just buy it. Buy it online. And then you print out just your sheet. Carry that with you, show it to us when we ask, all right? I am giving you an infraction for having 54 fish over the limit. Okay? I didn't count you for all 54. So Just so you know, just so you're aware, Mhm. this the amount of fish you have is is a lot. Yeah. Okay. So, if you have one fish over your limit, meaning you have one too many, it's a $154 ticket. $154. Mhm. So, if you take 54 that you were over and multiply that by $154 per fish, it's like $8,300. $8,300. Oh, That's a lot of money. >> Mhm. [snorts] Okay. I don't Does that that I don't think that's fair to you. I don't have money that much, you know. Right. Right. So, he's going to write you a ticket today. Okay. It's not going to be for $8,300, but it's still a little high. Okay. He's only going to charge you for 1/10 1/10, a fraction of the amount of fish you have. Okay. That sound fair? Kind of? 110? No, not 110. 1/10, meaning of 60, he's only charging you for six counts. So, 1/10 means it's like Watch. He's going to He's going to show you here. Here. So, I'll give you that just so you have your net back. Okay? Here we go. Okay. So, I did give you a ticket for fishing without a license, right? You know you have to have a license, right? I I know you said that it's not it's not late enough to end the season to buy one. Just buy it at the first of the year, and then you avoid this whole thing, okay? So, usually my daughter bought it. She She go Canada, you know. Right. So, um Right. So, again, you were 54 fish over your limit. I only wrote you for six over the limit, okay? Okay. Does that make sense? Mhm. Okay. All right. So, um again, we understand that the number is still a little bit high, but it could have been an $8,400 ticket. It's We We don't want that, right? That That's high. So, um um you're extremely cooperative. You talked to me, you told me you didn't try to hide anything. Definitely appreciate that, right? So, we're happy to work with you. And we also understand that this is an education moment, okay? So, the ticket, um you have to either pay or plead not guilty, up to you, by Friday, June 27th, okay? Uh 2 weeks, okay? You can do it online, you can do it through the mail. If you choose to do it through the mail, you can use the envelope that we give you. >> to I let my daughter do it. >> Okay. I don't know how [laughter] to do it. Well, so, all of the instructions are um this thing's all folded up, right? It's like a big long CVS receipt. All the instructions are laid out for you on the ticket itself, okay? So, again, you can do it online or through the mail. It should be my daughter will learn than that. Right. And I know I know sometimes all the computer information can be a little bit confusing. Are you still at that address on there? What's that address you got on there? Uh It came from your driver's license. What What address? Where do you live right now? Uh Providence. Okay, what's that? Okay, sorry. Um and as again, as I said, I know sometimes these things can be a little bit confusing. All the instructions are written on the on the actual ticket. It's all folded up, okay? Okay. All righty. In the end, the suspect was cited for fishing without a license and six catfish over the limit. The total fine was $1,011, almost $7,400 less than it would have been had the officer cited him for every fish. We called the Connecticut Centralized Infractions Bureau and confirmed the fines were paid in full 8 days after this interaction.
