Welcome back everyone. Today's video comes to us from Texas where a man was ejected from his vessel after striking a stump during a fishing tournament. The incident took place on Lake Tawakoni, a very large lake covering about 58 square miles with about 200 miles of shoreline and a max depth of 70 ft. The man was ultimately able to use his smart watch to contact 911 and that triggered a multi-unit response and units began doing a comprehensive search of the surrounding area and the entire lake. The response included three different fire departments, local police and sheriff's officers, Texas Parks and Wildlife officers, and two life flight helicopters. Now, before the video starts, I do want to note that the time stamp in the bottom right corner is 1 hour off, meaning the individual was in the water for about 3 hours before game wardens spotted him through their binoculars. >> We got you, sir. Hang on. >> All right, just hang on. We got you. We got you. Hang on. >> Sir, give me your hand. I got you. >> Yep. Yeah, just relax. We got you now. It'll be easier to go to the stern. >> Probably. You got a handle back there. Yep. >> I think I fell over this water for almost nearly 4 hours at least. >> Yeah, I think you're right. >> I'm a little tired. >> I bet. The motor is in neutral. I don't know if there's a ladder. I know there's a step. Come down. We're good. It's in neutral. That should buoy up. You get your foot? Hang on right there. I'm going to try to send you a message. >> Can you get that step thing? >> What? I'm not sure how this step works there. >> Yeah, there's a release on it down in there. >> I got you. >> I just can't see it. >> Got it. Push it. Can you push that feel down? >> There we go. There we go. >> You should be able to find the step down there. >> 701 Yeah, 701. Right here. I'll be out with it. Harry Lincoln Robert 503 And Harry Lincoln Robert 503 is 20 to 5. You're good. You're good. >> You're good. You're good. >> You're good. Just relax. Just relax. >> Yeah. Yeah. Just Just lay back. Here, sit back so you can lay back. >> Tell us something about your injury. 303 All right. We got you. 701 >> [snorts] >> But that's what he described as. >> Yeah. Yeah. You're good. Just relax. You're good. >> [snorts] >> Yeah, that's what I get. No damage to anything else. >> All right. We're going to start easing our way back to the shore. We got an ambulance over there. And then we'll check out your eye. You hit your face? >> Yeah, it looks like just the vehicle something like that. >> It was all bloody. >> Yeah. >> This morning. >> I'll bet. >> That's what happened around 6:30. >> Wow. Okay. >> I finally was able to get my phone or my watch to get on the emergency call by at 7:00. >> Wow. Okay. >> And then my watch died. It was fully charged this morning. >> We found your your boat by the stump over here. Were you by the stump whenever it happened or were you out towards like Holiday or where were you Where were you coming out of? >> Uh I was coming through heading up towards a fishing spot. I go through that area all the time. >> Uh-huh. >> I've seen stumps on the side, but I've always stayed Yeah. I tried to stay on the same trajectory. >> Uh-huh. >> But, I guess I was off just a little bit and I and I hit a stump that I didn't see. >> Oh, so you were driving with a big motor? >> Yeah. >> Uh so, you hit the stump and flipped a little bit and just got ejected you or >> Hit the stump, the whole thing just the whole boat did a 360 and I I guess I maybe I hit my eye on the on the corner on the on the console. >> Oh, yeah. >> And and I flew over. >> Man. >> But, I tried um using my watch >> Yeah. >> to get a hold of my buddy cuz he's also in the same fishing tournament. >> Yeah. >> And my phone was out it was out of range. >> Yep. Yeah, they were they were pinging your phone and it was you know, right here in the middle of the lake and we've [laughter] been looking ever since and with these rollers out here it's hard to see it. >> Yeah, and I saw the helicopter like once and the helicopter went right over top of me and I was like >> I'm all right. >> Yeah. Wow. >> Were they able to get a hold of my dad and sister? >> I'm not sure about that. I'm not sure if they made any communications there or not. >> Okay. >> There's nobody in or around the vehicle. No damage or anything else. Don't throw away. I'll >> I'll get to sit up. >> Okay. You want to move up to our seat at the front? There we go. Yeah, easy on your feet there. I don't want you [laughter] falling back in. >> I'm okay right here. >> You're all right there. Okay, that'll work. Probably good to keep our bow up too. We've been taking water over the over the bow trying to get out here. >> Thank god for this. >> Yes, absolutely. >> Thank god I'm someone that follows the damn rules still. >> Yeah. >> And we appreciate that very much. >> Absolutely. For those of you who may not know what he was referring to there was his emergency kill switch lanyard. When pulled these lanyards immediately shut down the vessel's engine preventing them from running away or even worse potentially circling back and causing a fatal prop strike. This operator is very fortunate that he was wearing an inflatable life jacket at the time of the incident and also utilizing his vessel's lanyard. Without those, there would be a very high risk of death and it's very likely that he would have not survived this incident. >> If it wasn't for that, I would have already been dead. >> Yeah. Yeah, this this uh waves out here are no joke. And it's a big lake to be stuck out in the middle of. >> Yeah. Well, that's that's where I usually stay out in the middle of the lake. >> Yeah. >> Um like this afternoon when I'm going back in for weigh-in, I wouldn't have gone through the middle of the lake of the lake because of the wind. >> Yeah. >> But the wind wasn't too bad at 6:30 this morning. >> I got you. >> What was this stuff? >> Uh do you know what stump you hit? Was it this this biggest one right here or >> It could have It could have been that one. >> Yeah, probably would have been farther out that way, right? >> Yeah. >> Yeah. You fish out here much? >> Yeah, I'll Yeah. >> Good. >> Here, have a seat up here. So, the way I went, I took that direction right here. That's the way I was going right there. >> Okay. >> That's That's That's That's like on my graph on my boat. I can show you the trajectory that I was taking and that's what it pretty much is. >> Hey, you probably drove right past it this morning cuz that's that's your track this morning on the way out. >> No, no, no, no. No, this was from the other day. >> Oh, okay. Yeah, yeah. >> I came out here and did my gear. >> The shore, okay. Yeah, yeah. >> I I I assume you would have drifted this way. That's what I was thinking, too. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> I think when you're in the water, you don't hardly move because you're very low profile and the boat moves a lot faster than you do, yeah. >> Oh Oh yeah, I I was pretty much when it first happened, I saw my stern light, anchor light on the boat just slowly drifting away from me. >> What's What's it still dark? It's uh 10:00, yeah. >> So, >> Was it still dark whenever the accident happened? No? Just after that? >> No, cuz we don't We We launch and then we do a number take off after we have safe light. >> Which uh which tournament was it? >> Oh, Media Bass. >> Media Bass, yeah. Yes, sir. Yes, sir. He's on our boat. We're coming straight back to y'all. We're uh we're straight out from the cove. >> Where is it located? >> he's in pretty good condition. He's He's sitting up on our seat right now. He's got a >> They got your boat >> laceration on his eyebrow and bruising on his face, but uh real crampy, but that's about it. >> I think they I know 911 dispatch. I gave them my dad's phone number. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would need a life jacket like this. >> Hey, they save lives, that's for sure. >> Uh just the funny thing is there's always a there's this meme that goes around about fishermen and everything saying I guess we're out fishing today and everything, and then we die out out from out in the water. >> Yeah. >> Like don't you dare tell them we died doing what we love, but we don't love drowning. >> [laughter] >> Exactly. Exactly, yeah. You mind if we take a picture? >> Yeah, go ahead. >> All right. What's your phone number? I'll text it to you. >> 817 >> I'm Dwayne, and that's Josh. >> Nice to meet you guys. >> Nice to meet y'all. >> Wish it was under better circumstances. >> Yeah, absolutely. Absolutely. >> Like glad it wasn't under worse circumstances. >> Yes, sir. >> Absolutely. >> At least you know this wasn't connected to my phone, and at least allowed you to do um the emergency call. >> So, is it is it uh it's not cellular? And so, I want to just go straight to it just this uh like >> It's only connected with the phone and with um and with and on Wi-Fi. >> Wow. >> So, I I kept trying to send send a text to my buddy. >> Yeah. >> And wouldn't go through. I'd out the zone and it tried to find my phone and it was showing the red red phone symbol out there. >> Yeah. >> Like okay, well, yep. I'm not definitely out of range. >> Wow. >> What those flashing lights on? >> I got an ambulance. Fire truck uh >> vehicle >> Another ambulance up there looks like or that's I don't know if that's fire truck or ambulance. >> Well, damn I know I'm a big guy but >> [laughter] >> When we when we do get in Would one of you guys be able to grab my phone from my boat? >> Yeah, we can do that for sure. >> I appreciate it. Oh, great. They got great of people there. >> [laughter] >> Wonderful. >> It's always an event if something like this happens. >> This stuff doesn't happen more. >> All right, come on over here. All right, I'm going to search for your phone. >> Where did you find them? >> Way out in the middle. >> Is his phone still on the boat? >> Uh not sure. >> How's it going? I'll need to rope. Trying to tie this thing off so he's not beating his boat up. It's >> Yeah, they booked him a problem. >> Pull me a little bit. There you go. Yep, you're good. >> All right. Are there any other one in the water? >> Nope. I fell I fell almost fell in the water twice trying to get that guy out of the water. It's a little rough out there. >> Oh, yeah. How far out there were they? >> Pretty far. Pretty far. He was out past that stump. Um probably about another 3 400 yd past that stump. >> Past it? >> Yep. >> So you can see the stump from here? They were going opposite of the way the boat was going. >> No, just the boat is traveling faster than how they that he is because he's low in the water. >> Yeah. >> Whereas the boat is uh high in the water and no weight inside it anymore. So the boat goes upwind or downwind a lot faster than he does. Yes, I figured. >> I just >> No, you're good. You're good. I was just trying to get it off cuz it's rubbing here and rubbing there. So I was trying to save his boat a little bit. Did he get his phone? He was asking about his phone. I didn't see it over here. Awesome. Perfect. >> Now these rescue videos never seem to be very popular. I'm not really sure why, but I really enjoy them. These videos show another side of what first responders do, but also a sense of community. In this specific case, multiple cities and counties got together to help one person. This sense of community is something I love to see and something that I think should be celebrated. The video also showcases the importance of safety gear, but most importantly having that safety gear readily available in the event of an emergency. The video also shows something that isn't talked about often, but how important a smart watch can be to your personal safety. In this case, the angler was able to call 911 using his smart watch and that potentially saved his life. These smart watches have also been known to help people during cardiac events or even when somebody slips and falls and breaks a bone and they can't get to their phone, they could call 911 directly from their watch. In fact, most of these watches now have fall detection built in. Now, this event took place on a lake, but if you plan on fishing in places without cell service like fishing offshore, it's very wise to invest in an EPIRB just in case you happen to run into an emergency offshore. Anyways, there's really not much else to say about the video other than great work to everyone involved including the operator who was wearing his safety gear.
