An officer with Washington's Department of Fish and Wildlife responded to a call in reference to a white sturgeon tied to a rope alongside a river. After waiting nearly 9 hours, they observed two individuals pulling up in a vehicle. The officers continued to watch them, even seeing them turn off all of their lights when a police vehicle went by on an unrelated matter. Having reason to believe they were in possession of two sturgeon, the officers stopped them as they began to leave. >> All right. So, my name is Officer Lair with Washington Fish and Wildlife Police. Okay. The reason I stopped you is cuz the fishing >> I don't have a license. >> You don't have a license? >> I don't. I don't. >> Okay. Gotcha. >> Do you have ID on you? >> Yeah. >> Okay. No. And this is your car? >> Uh, yeah. I was trying to I I don't have a license, so I was trying to get a friend to come get it and Yeah. >> Okay. >> Uh, for a second. >> You want to finish getting her ID. We'll get her. >> Okay. So, where's your ID at? >> Oh, okay. >> Hold on a sec. >> Don't go reaching in there. >> I just want you to tell me where it is. >> I'm not 100% sure. I mean, it's my wallet. >> Okay. Where's your wallet at? Uh, I have no idea. >> I can tell you my info. >> Okay. What do you mean where? You don't know where it is? >> I don't I don't know. >> It's kind of a disaster in here. >> Okay. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can be used against you in a court of law. You have the right. Do you understand your rights? >> Okay. >> Who are you calling right now? >> Uh, my friend. Uh, >> I'm trying to get a hold of my friend who lives right down the road here. Um, I I'm not in trouble, am I? I >> Well, currently you're not free to leave. Okay. >> Okay. >> And I just want to get your information so I know who you are. >> Hello. >> Hello. >> Hey, Leslie. I'm up here um at Steel Head Lane and uh Pedro and I just got pulled over. Um I guess cuz we caught fish that we weren't supposed to catch or something. Um uh but um can you come up here and um so you can drive? Yeah. >> Who are you talking to? Uh, my friend Lesie. >> Lesie. Okay. Can we pause the conversation? Lesie, can I call you? This is Officer Lair with Washington Fish and Wildlife Police. Molly's going to call you back in a minute. Okay. >> Okay. >> Go ahead and hang up. >> Okay. >> So, what's your last name, Molly? >> How do uh what's her name? >> Are you guys boyfriend, girlfriend? >> No, just friends. >> Yeah. >> Okay. Have you been using this car recently or is this different? >> No, it's the first time that I drive it. >> Okay. And this is Molly's car? >> This one. >> Okay. >> You have any warrants right now? >> No. >> Don't think so. Right. How do you spell it? >> M O L O L O L O L O L O L O L O L O L O L O L Y. >> But yeah, I mean I I have a job. if I can I'm I'm you know uh >> okay >> trying to do everything that I need to do right and >> all right >> just go ahead and have a seat here on that front of the hood. Okay. >> You just want to check her >> run her name figure out. >> What's that? >> Yeah. No, we know. >> Did you leave and come back? Did I? >> Yeah. >> No, I just >> Okay. >> Yeah. >> Do you have a fishing license? >> No. >> Oh, okay. >> I did like last year. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. I got one last year. >> But then I think you have to get a new one every year, right? >> You do. Yeah. They expire at the end of March. >> Oh, did >> Yeah, I knew it was coming. I knew it was probably expired. >> Did you guys catch anything tonight? >> Um, >> yeah. >> Yeah. I mean, I was just I mean like um uh you know I I came down here and actually Brandon uh I got like three fish. They were all like um >> like garbage ones or whatever. He said, "Yeah, they're bad." But >> put them on a worm and like a little teeny tiny rod and a little teeny tiny uh bite. >> Go ahead and get a bird. >> They said that they were like the type of fish that like don't even eat or whatever. Those are pretty bad though. >> Yeah, I forget what his name was. >> And I caught some of those little the ones with the circle fish, you know, like um I caught one or two of those. They were like >> So, you didn't fish here earlier today? >> No. >> No. >> No. No. We just like fish cuz it's just like this is just like relaxing and it like clears your brain and life's hard and so fishing is nice. >> Yeah. No, it is relaxing. >> It is. >> Yeah. >> So I I know we should have nice fish though. >> Did you catch anything? >> Uh >> yeah. >> Uh >> you didn't fish very long. >> Uh-uh. No. No. How long have you guys known each other? >> Couple years. >> Couple years. >> He's my guardian angel. >> Oh, right on. >> Anyways, I'm I'm sorry if we get something wrong. We were just fishing because just do anything. >> Yeah, we're we're more so here. >> We're here because of the fish. Really? Oh. Also, I Pedro knows he's not supposed to be fishing at all. He's in a lot more trouble than you are. >> I know, but he doesn't play by the rules and he's not allowed he's not allowed to fish. He might go to jail for quite a while for fishing. >> Yeah. Because like the fish you have in your car, you're not allowed to have. And we've done this many times with Pedro. This is not our first first time. >> What was he titled 10 for? >> Uh warrant for drugs out of Katz County, possession of cool controlled substance. So >> they got a warrant. >> Yeah. They said it was for like a misdemeanor drug charge. They said title 10, which means misdemeanor, but it's out of Katz County. >> Can Can I call my friend back? Do you ever come bring me? >> Uh, not right now. Just wait a minute. Is this your car, Molly? >> Uh, I have friends using right now. >> You're borrowing it? >> Yeah. >> Okay. Um, I'm going to clean up my cage and then we'll just get him put in there. >> Um, and then she can't drive. Um, she doesn't have any warrants or anything. >> Yeah, she's in a you're in a good spot. >> All right. So, >> call her now. >> Yeah. >> I would wait for >> Just wait a second. >> Do you have a new mailing address or a place you're getting mail? >> Uh, in Kelso. >> A place in Kelso. Do you know the address? I don't really remember, but it's it's too many orders and whatever when I go to jail and stuff. It's u >> they did they take it last time? >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> All right. I'll let you search him and you can >> take him and then we'll move to the car. >> Okay. >> All right. >> Okay. So, go ahead and turn around for me. Okay. Do you have anything on you that's going to stick me or stab me in anyway? Hey, >> can you have a drink of my pup? I got a beer. >> What's in there? >> She's She's pop. >> Okay. Cuz I can smell the alcohol on her. >> Oh, okay. >> No, I'm not drinking. I'm just drinking the pop. I'm just really thirsty, you know. >> I can. >> Pedro, I tell this to everybody that goes in the back of my car. Okay. There's nothing in here. I just searched it. Anything I find in there will be from you. >> Okay. >> Okay. >> Mhm. If we get to the jail and I find something in there, it's going to be more problems. So, it's better just to tell me now about it. >> I don't got nothing, you know. >> Okay. Well, I know you've had it on there in the past. That's why I don't want >> I know. >> Okay. All right. Go ahead and have a seat back up in there. >> Okay. So, that seat belt folds down a little. Just go ahead and look that way. Well, considering he's got the tequila right there, I don't know if I'll give him anything to drink. >> There was mine. There was my tequila. >> Okay. >> Yeah. >> Molly, I'm going to read you your rights. Okay. >> Am I under arrest? >> Uh, well, you're not free to go and I've got questions I'd like to ask you. So, before I ask you those, I'd like to read you your rights. >> Okay. >> Okay. So, you have the right to remain silent. Do you understand what your rights are? >> Yeah. >> Okay. Uh the reason we're here tonight is because we knew there were fish staked off down there and we waited for somebody to come back for them. >> Okay. We're not here because you were fishing without a license. >> Okay. >> Okay. So, were you involved with the original catch? >> Uh >> like were you here earlier when he got them? >> No. >> No. Okay. How did tonight play out then? When did you first talk to Pedro? >> Um, he uh drove me back from work to >> Okay. So, he came and picked you up at work. Where's work? >> Okay. So, he came down. He was in Kelso, picked you up. >> Yeah, cuz my back was hurting really bad tonight and so I got off early. So, um >> about what time was that? >> Uh 7 or so, I think. >> Okay. So, he picks you up around 7:00. Then does he say you want to go fishing or what does he say? Um well, we just we just always go fishing, you know. >> Okay. >> We just do it a lot, you know. So, um uh I mean we I we don't norally catch much, but um we like fish. I mean, cuz it's just, you know, we just sit there and >> Well, yeah. No, like we like we talked about, it's relaxing. Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Okay. So, you guys say that you want to go fishing and then when when do when do these come up in conversation? Uh what? Um he just uh he just said that uh he um I I I you know I I don't remember exactly. I I don't >> Okay. Yeah. Um I don't remember. Um >> so is this your car or his car? >> It's it's my cl my my >> your friends or >> Yeah. Yeah. >> Okay. But you let him have it cuz he picked you up from work or how >> Yeah, I just maybe explain that. I I just uh had him get it and bring me uh go pick me up from work. >> Did he drop you off for work, too? >> Uh no. >> No. Okay. >> In my mind, see, I'm just You drove to work? >> No. No. A friend straight up here dropped him off. >> Okay. Yeah. So, Okay. So, somebody else dropped you off. >> You let Pedro borrow your car >> and he picked you up from work. >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> I I just I left early tonight cuz my hip was hurting me really bad. >> Yeah, that's fine. And um so normally I'm there until 2:00 about uh I work 8 uh 4:25 to 2 Monday through Friday. >> Sorry, what to two? >> Uh to 2. >> I got you. >> Monday through Friday. I just I left early tonight cuz my back was hurting really bad. And >> yeah. Okay. >> Um so how many fish are in the car? >> Um I think two. >> Okay. Uh we're going to get those out. >> Okay. Okay. Um, come around. I I told her I'm not comfortable with the pot because there's a fifth of tequila. >> Yeah. >> Sitting next to it. >> Just Just so we can see you. Okay. >> Do you have any weapons on you or anything? >> No. >> Okay. >> Do you have >> Okay. Would you feel comfortable if I just made sure you didn't have any weapons on you real quick? >> Just Okay. So, just turn around. >> I have something in his pocket. >> Okay. Don't reach for it. big rocks or something. >> Okay. Yeah. Don't reach for it. Okay. I told you not to reach for it. Turn around for me. >> You're not under arrest. Okay. I'm just searching you for weapons. Okay. Go ahead and wind your stance for me. >> How long have you known Pedro? >> Three years, you said? >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> And you're you're not aware of the kind of trouble he's been in before for fishing? >> Uh, not really. >> Okay. No. Didn't get the rope all the way in. So the the one with the rope, >> can you tell me about that one? Like >> um where did it come from? >> Down on the beach. I think. >> Okay. >> Um, >> were either of these caught when you guys came down here, like with a rod and a reel, or were they all were they both staked to the ground? >> Um, sure. I was kind of like looking for rocks, so >> Okay. >> Yeah. I like this. I got my >> Okay. Did you catch either of these with a fishing pole? >> No. >> No. Okay. Will you measure the big one first real quick >> and then we'll be good to go. No other fish in the car? >> No. >> Um, >> I see I'm seeing like lots of like Is that like sleeping bag? >> Yeah. >> Is that what that is? >> Okay. >> Yeah. >> Do I don't actually believe this, but do you live in the car? Uh, no. >> Okay. Is the sleeping is it normal for it to be this full? >> Um, >> or is this his stuff? >> No, it's just is um >> some of yours. >> Yeah. Yeah. >> Okay. >> Am I good to call my friend? Yeah. >> Uh, where is she going to be coming from? >> Just right right down right down the road. Right. Right across from Space Age. >> 19. >> Okay. Let's Since she's so close, we're going to wait just a second. Okay. No other fish. >> No. >> Is this your fishing gear? >> No, it's not mine. >> That's not yours? Okay. Earlier when we first contacted you, you had said you were maybe concerned about being in trouble for fishing without a license. >> So, and now in the in your last comments there, you said you mainly were just looking for rocks, >> right? >> Did did you fish or did you not fish? Well, they both he he tried to go up and everything, but one was supposed to mine, you know. I mean, I was I was like, >> "Okay." >> Yeah. >> Did you see him cast out in this just this evening >> or did was it strictly just to come get these ones? >> Uh, no. Uh, no. Yeah, we came down just to fish. I mean, as far as I know, you know. Okay. >> And then um uh >> I understand you came to fish, but did you fish is my question >> because you weren't here all that long, >> right? >> And these >> That's what I'm curious. Like I know the red one was the one on the rope was already here. >> Uhhuh. >> I've I've known it was here for a long time. >> Okay. I'm wondering if they if you or him caught the other one in that time period where you showed up to fish. >> That's what I'm curious about. No, I don't think so. >> Okay. So, I don't believe that. What? >> I don't I don't believe that you showed up down here and you didn't catch the second fish cuz I watched both of you. You had a green laser. What? Where's the What was the the deal with the laser? Cuz you guys were shining the laser around >> just for fun. It was just something he got for fun. And then I could see Pedro's white shirt on the bank. And then I saw him pull up a fish very very quickly. Okay. So you guys weren't fishing at all? >> No. Yeah. I mean we Yeah. We I mean we cast out, you know. >> Okay. >> Yeah. So are we are we thinking the one without the rope he caught in that half hour? >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> That's what I'm thinking. Okay. >> Just based off of my observations. So, >> and what we already knew. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. Okay. >> So, um do we want to take the gear? >> Like the poles? >> Yeah. >> In most cases, I would say no. But considering how he >> won't quit fishing, >> we're going to get lost fishing. >> Yeah. And do you realize he's going to get charged with a felony tonight for fishing? >> Really? >> He's He's revoked for life. >> What? >> Yeah. For fishing ever? >> For fishing? He's going to probably go to jail for a year for fishing. >> What? >> That's how much he's been in trouble with us. >> Like this kind of crap happens all the time. >> And that and when you keep doing that, they keep jacking the penalty up. I'm not kidding you. I've put people in jail for not even catching anything. But not alone is he not is he just fishing. In addition to that, he's also breaking the rules all the time. Like I've seen the court get really mad at people. >> He's not a bad guy at all. >> I understand he's not a bad fish. >> I understand he's not a bad guy, but this is not acceptable and the judge is going to throw them. >> How can you catch these? There's Seems like there's a lot in there. Yeah, they're well they're slow to reproduce so they're they are coming back but you're not allowed to keep those at any point in during the year. >> And on top of that like well like I don't even know how many he's ended up responsible for taking over the I'd have to go back and look at all of the cases we have against him. But he's continually catching fish that he's not supposed to and keeping them. And he's taken it to the point now to where like he's going to go to jail for a considerable amount of time merely for fishing. But they're not going to like it the fact that he's out still breaking the rules on top of it. Um, now he may bail out before he goes before he has trial or is convicted or or or um is sentenced or anything like that, but um so >> I'm not going to say for certain that that's what's going to happen to him, but I that's what's happened in the past to some folks who were in a similar position he's in. Yeah. >> Who's to say what necessarily a judge judge is going to do? But he's it's certainly in the uh realm of possibilities for him. I >> mean, his guardian angel guardian angel. >> Well, maybe you can help him in the future >> to not fish. >> Like that's all I mean, he doesn't have an option anymore. He can't ever fish ever again. >> Um, >> the only time I've ever seen suspensions like this come back is like after 10 or 15 years of like compliance. But he's we we deal with Pedro on like a six-month basis. >> But I mean, he's not really doing anything wrong, right? I mean, he's just >> No, he is. He's he's been caught wrong multiple times and then suspended and then caught suspended and then revoked for life and he continues to fish and he continues to take fish he's not supposed to. So, I know it may seem uh maybe it might seem small, but like he when you >> It just seems like something like sad because like he he loves fishing. >> Yeah. Oh, I I I understand that he loves fishing, but I love to fish, too, but I don't go out and break the rules. He could go and catch and release these things. I mean, if he wouldn't have violated a bunch of rules in the beginning and gotten himself in a position where he um is suspended and revoked from fishing, >> but can I give him a drink of soda? >> No. With the fifth of tequila next to it, he's we're not going to get a drink of soda. Um, >> and I can explain that to him. I'm not trying to be >> hard on him. Um, >> can I call my friend yet? >> Yeah, go ahead and call her. See if you can get a ride. So, there's no other fish. >> No. >> Okay. What? Who's the pink pole belong to? >> The what? >> The pink pole back in there. Who's that pole belong to? >> Oh, there's probably my other friends. I'm betting. >> My other friend Jr. Yeah, I think that might be Yeah, probably his. >> He should be here just now. He's just kind of right. >> Was that the truck that just went by? >> No, probably. No, I think he was going to walk down. >> Okay, cuz you can't drive. So, I just want to make sure he's coming to drive. >> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. He He'll be here in a minute. >> Who's coming? >> Joe. >> Joe. All right. So, you good? >> Yeah, I'm good. If you want me to just head out. >> Yeah, you can head out. I'll go see if I can put him in the water and get him going again. So, can I get in the passenger seat and sit down? >> You can do whatever you like. You can you're you're free to go. Okay. [snorts] 513. pocket for a green and red pin or something green and red on this box. Clayton is clear one convicted inactive. He didn't fly quite as good. The sturgeon measured 45.5 and 47 in.
