On October 20th, 2024, an Alaska state trooper was on patrol when he observed an individual retaining at least one sockeye salmon after it was snagged in the pectoral fin. >> Hello. How are you? >> Good. >> Good. Good. You guys did good. Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Quite a few. >> Two more. Yeah. Just you have to go. >> Two more. >> Yeah. Just you have to go. >> You're almost done, huh? >> Yeah. Well, >> that's good. That's good. Just try to catch yesterday the dip netting. >> Oh yeah. >> This was about there. >> You tried the dip netting yesterday? >> Yeah, I was very slow. >> Okay. Kenai or Cassilof? >> Kenai. >> Oh, okay. Okay. >> Very slow. >> Okay. Well, I'm uh you could tell the the wildlife troopers. Um >> Uhhuh. >> So, how many fish do you guys have total right now? Oh, right now we just say how like we stay 3 days. >> No, no, just today. >> Oh, today >> just today. Yes. >> Oh, we have this >> me, my wife, and my son. So, we have 16. >> 16 so far. Okay. >> I needed two more. >> Two more. Okay. How many have you caught hooked and landed? >> Oh, was the snag. >> Sure. Sure. No. No. How many did you catch and that you you the fishing pole and you hooked and good and and and netted and bonked. How many of them were yours >> that you hooked? >> How many they good? Yeah. >> Yeah. Well, how many did you hook that were good and you kept? >> Oh, everyone. >> All of them? Okay. Okay. That's kind of what Well, your No, I think your son caught one. I saw him catch one. >> I don't think so. >> Yeah. Yeah, he caught one about 20 minutes ago. is medium size. >> Oh, so we just said all was little one like >> Yeah. So So did your wife fish at all? >> Yeah, she died. Yeah. >> Okay. Did she Did she catch any though? >> Yeah, >> she did that you kept >> Yeah, just not much. >> There's not many. >> Okay. Okay. But how many of the 16? How many do you think you caught >> for me? >> Yeah. How many did you catch of the 16? >> I don't know. Maybe seven, eight. >> Seven, eight. Okay. And you know what the the the daily limit is? >> Six. >> Six. It's six per person. >> My wife and she helped me with a with a knife. >> Right. No, I saw that. I I I was watching for about an over an hour. >> Okay. >> Okay. Um the the thing is is that um it's six per person, not not to. So she has to catch her six. You have to catch your six. Son has to catch his six. You don't get to catch them for everybody. >> Oh, no. Yeah. Just in my me. >> I I I know. But that's that's not that's not okay. You you have to catch just your six. She catches her six. He catches his six. That's you don't you don't get to catch >> 10 and she catches four and your son catches two. That's that's no good. It's it's So when you catch six and then I saw you were doing good at releasing them when they were in the tail and in the belly, but I saw a couple come in that that were let's see there's >> there was one that was right here in the pectoral. I don't know which fish it was, but there was at least And there was one other in the head. I was watching you for like the last hour. That one's It might be in the cooler already. Oh, no. Right there. That was the one I watched. >> Oh, >> your your son netted it and bonked and pulled the the hook out, but they got to be >> kind of >> here. But but you did good releasing them back here. Tail. You You did good with that. Um, where did you guys dip net from the shore yesterday? >> No, in the boat. >> In a boat with your boat, friend. >> Yeah, my boat. >> Your boat. Okay. Okay. So, you guys have the permit and everything for that? That you do? Okay. >> But you didn't catch no fish? >> No, just really >> No, I was very slow yesterday. >> Yeah. Usually you can catch some at least. >> No. So, my my friends, she she go to Poland. >> So, I just said, "Let's get take the fish to the Poland." >> Oh. Oh, okay. Okay. Okay. And I said I stay here just a coming vacation. >> I starting last two weeks the tour 3 weeks. So I said I'll be catch. >> Okay. So you're on vacation. >> Yeah. >> Okay. From >> I working >> Oh, okay. Okay. Okay. So Alaska's home and everything. >> Yeah. >> Has been for how long? >> I usually How long the Oh, I have the how long I working? >> Yeah. Yeah. Oh, that is independ my own. >> Oh, okay. But but not all year. Probably just like six, seven months. >> Oh, yeah. Easy. >> Okay. And then go where? >> We just have a Cordova. Cordova Valdish with >> Oh, okay. >> One day we going Valdish, one day we go Cordova. One day. Yeah. >> But when you're working, where do you where do you go in the winter time when the >> Oh, me working the whole year. >> Oh, you do? Oh, okay. >> Yeah. We used to go shipyard like the middle October. >> Okay. stay in the middle of December in the shipyard and Okay. Yeah. So like the October uh November. >> Interesting. Very good. Very good. Obviously you have a heavy accent from >> Poland. >> Poland. Okay. Okay. I was going to say Poland, Austria, one of those right in that area. >> How are you doing? >> How's it going? >> Good. So I was explaining to your dad here that um I've been watching you guys for a while. Please put put your stuff down. Don't let me make you hold the net. Um, and he's he's being very honest with me, which I appreciate. There was there was a couple fish that weren't quite in the mouth like they were supposed to be, and we I already found him cuz I was watching you guys. Um, and then, uh, I know you're shy of the total limit, which is six per person, 18, but it's six per person. Not he catches 10 and you catch four and you catch >> two, right? It's it's six, six, and six. And it's just that's that's kind of the way they've always set up the rules. Um, so again, I you know, appreciate the honesty because I I think I saw him catch eight or eight or nine, but I you were, you already had a stringer full of fish when I showed up. So, um, yeah, that's that's kind of the issue. And then there was a couple that were that I saw at least. Again, I didn't I only saw like the last eight, eight or nine or 10 or something like that. I didn't see the first ones, but there were some that you I told acknowledge you guys were doing really good releasing the ones that were in the tail, the belly, the back. Super appreciated. There was at least one I know that was like in the pectoral fin. Yeah, that one right there. Uh, that one was kind of like right there, I think. Close. I mean, I'm not I'm not going to make I'm not too worried about that one. >> I'm not too worried about that one. It's It's You know, people have said the the old thing used to be in the head and it's not or I've even heard in front of the eyeball. >> Yeah, that's what I heard. >> If it's hurt, we're probably not going to give you any grief for that. Um, we're not. But if they're if they're back here in the fins and belly, those those ones should go back. Um, just to be just to be fair. But again, I watched you guys. You were doing you were doing as good as I could expect. I mean, some will slip through for sure, but obviously the concern is is that it's again, it's supposed to be six per person catching the fish. And as long as I was watching, you were doing a fantastic job netting, but I never saw you once such a fishing pole. So, um, do you have your fishing license on you by chance? And then, uh, do you have a driver's license or ID or something? Okay. >> Um, >> I always keep it with you. That's usually good to good to good to have. Get fish slime off my hands. I I smell like fish 24/7 this time of year. Okay. Very good. I think it's a permanent one. Very good. >> Mhm. >> Okay. >> You have you don't look it. You don't look it. >> The fishing the same thing. >> Yep. Yep. For sure. >> Okay. So, here's what I think I'm going to do. I only saw one or two that weren't perfect in the mouth. I'm not I'm not too worried about that. Um the the limit stuff is kind of what we're concerned with. I'm going to go with what you've acknowledged to me, which is that you think you caught maybe 10 or something. Normally, if you catch an over limit, we seize them. I'm not going to do that. You guys don't even have your full limit. I I'm going to write a citation for taking an over limit, but I'm not going to take the fish. Okay? Does that sound Does that sound fair? And we're not going to I'm not going to do anything about the ones that aren't quite in the mouth, cuz that would be a whole separate citation. More fines. And >> yeah, >> again, most I watched you guys for a while. you were doing really good at releasing the vast maj but just the two in fact I saw that were that I actually had documented in my notes. The one was in the head and the one was in the pectoral fin and it just there was two in a row. They're on the stringer like just like I remember them. So um yeah, does that sound somewhat fair? I mean it's I again I understand it was a mistake. They're basically like a traffic ticket. Okay. Um doesn't affect your job or anything like that. Nothing nothing criminal, nothing like that. Real quick, what is uh can I get a home phone number? Home or cell? Just a phone number to put down. Okay. Um, I'm going to let you guys finish getting loaded up. I'm actually, it's faster for me if I use my computer and I'm parked right on the other side of the parking lot. So, finish loading up. I'm going to walk over uh there. Just don't pull out and leave yet. I'll actually drive around here. Um, >> I'll show you in the vehicle and park. >> No, no, no. Stay here. I'll drive around here cuz my my car is just right over there. I can see it. Yeah. I'll because it's way faster for me to do this from the car than Okay. >> than to do it by hand. So, finish loading up your stuff. No more fish in the cooler or anything. Right. Well, I guess there probably be some, huh? Cuz you got one, two, three, four, five, six, seven. How many are here? >> I don't know. >> One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. So, you probably have what? >> Six more in there. >> Yeah, should be in the first one. Yeah, let's just maybe get a total count just to say five. >> One, two, three, four, five. Oh, so we got 14. >> Five. Yeah. No, that's what you said was 14. That sounds right. >> Yeah. Five. >> That sounds right. And then nothing in this one. >> Oh, that one is like I said yesterday. >> Oh, I thought you didn't catch any fish yesterday. >> No, we catch yesterday. >> You did? Oh, you did? Okay. Okay. How many are in here? Do you mind if we take a peek real quick? Oh, that one. >> Oh, don't break your rods. >> Here, I'm going to step up if you don't mind. >> Oh, they're all buried under the ice. Okay. How many did you get yesterday? >> Yesterday 12. >> 12. Okay. >> 18. Yeah. >> Okay. But that was rotten real, not dip netting. >> No, dip netting like the the the girl I told you, the Polish lady. >> Uhhuh. >> She got the she go to Poland. >> Oh, so she took the fish. >> Yeah. >> Oh, okay. But they went on your permit, I assume, right? Okay. >> Yeah. >> Okay. Oh, did you catch a hook? >> Wait, >> wait. Yeah, weights can be worse sometimes. >> Yeah, >> for sure. >> Okay, so so you How many did you catch dip netting that she took then? Yesterday >> she take it yesterday to home and catch >> I don't know >> how many she has. >> Okay. >> And and those did and and who had the permit for those fish? >> Um our friend. >> Oh, okay. Is that the same person who took them or somebody different? Okay. Yes. I think 25 kids and husband. So 25. >> Okay. >> 35. >> That sounds about right. And where where's husband and kids at? >> Oh, they are. >> Oh, okay. Okay. Okay. Just just making sure they're not like literally living in Poland income because that's obviously not okay. So >> that Yeah, she's traveling to Poland. >> I see. Yes. Yes. Please, please, please. Do you guys have the dip net permit that you used yesterday on you or is it buried or put away or something? >> No, I just have my fishing. >> No, no, no. That's okay. That's okay. I just I I would check it if you had it, but I'm not too worried about it. So, yeah. Finish loading up. Um, like I said, I'm going to go down here. I'll drive back over. We'll we'll get this stuff taken care of and let you guys get on your way. Okay. >> All right. Hang tight for me. Okay, folks. Your stuff back here. Permanent one. Okay. So, there's those back. Okay. So, like I said, what I'm going to do, I'm not not normally we would feed your fish. I just don't in that rig. I don't have a place to put them. Normally, I'd give them to somebody else, but whatever. We'll call it a wash. Okay. So, what I did, I just wrote a citation for the over limit. Um I I kind of met you in the middle. I mean I mean, we we kind of agreed that you caught at least 10, so I just I I went with I went with that one. Um it's kind of a round number. Um kind of beats the middle. And again, like I said, I'm not taking any fish. Also, not doing anything about the couple that were foul hooked. Okay. So again, it's basically it it literally is a traffic ticket. Same way it's just for a different regulation. Um just says what it's for right here. It just says unlawfully take an over limit of sockeye salmon. They hook and retain 10 sockeye salmon limited six. And again, the way they do it is it's he or she who hooks the fish, that's their fish. So he can if he hooks them and hands you the rod to fight it, it's still technically his fish. That's that's kind of how they determine who it belongs to. Oh, so you like every person has one one rod >> and not one rod, but like one string with six fish. >> You can combine your fish. That's fine. But but you have to hook and hook your six. You don't have to reel them in. You just have to hook them. You can if you hook six and hand him the rod and he reels them in. That's fine. >> The problem is that >> but you can't he can't just what's called party fishing. We can't you can't party fish. He can't catch your fish unless >> So I can hook it >> and he needs to >> Well, he or you can reel it in. It's up to you. But the only way you can legally do that is if there's a qualifying disability and you go to fishing game, you get what's called a proxy form. That allows you to fish for somebody else and they don't have to be there. Um, that's the only way you can do that. Otherwise, it's Yep. Each person has to has to catch their >> Sure. >> Yes. >> Yep. Exactly. Exactly. So, um, that's all that stuff. The way it's set up is it's a $100 flat fine, $20 per fish, and then there's a $20 search charge. So, we had four over. So, $100, four over makes it$180. $20 search charge is what the court does. I don't have you say so on that. So, it ends up being $200 to total is a fine. There's no points or anything. Nothing against your driver's license. Obviously, if you're not driving, just take care within 30 days. It goes to the Kai court. That's the address. And then right here in the middle is a web address. You can go online and take care of it. >> So, we can pay online right there or that's the mailing address. And this stuff kind of tells you how to take care of it. >> Oh, got it. Okay. You have your licenses back, right? >> Okay. Now, we understand how you how you have to do it again. >> Yes. >> Just make sure they're a little closer to the mouth. Those those one or two they again they weren't bad. So, I'm not going to worry about it. I've got people down the river that are catching them in the tail and keeping them. So, I'm going to go deal with that. >> That's why I'm going to rush. So, thank you guys for your understanding. Appreciate it. Take care. >> If you like this video and want to see more like it, subscribe to Arrest Cam. As always, thanks for watching.
