Officers with the Missouri Department of Conservation were patrolling Lake Ozark when they received information from another officer that three men were seen snagging near Lake Park. Due to its proximity to the Truman Lake Dam, snagging is strictly prohibited in this area. Using the location provided by the shore-based officer, they were able to locate the suspected vessel. Oh, he's right there. Huh? Is he right there in this boat? Oh, yeah. Yeah. Hello. Hey, it's conservation agents. How are you? I'm good. You guys having any luck? Well, we got one spoonbill. Let us see your bait before you. What kind of bait are you using? Some bought at Walmart. Say it again. Some bought at Walmart from gas station down the road or some white carp. Oh, okay. Yep. Silver carp, okay. Okay. Silver carp. Who got the spoonbill or paddlefish? I did. You did? Right here? Okay. Where you guys from? I'm from Stover, sir. Stover? Okay. I'm originally born and raised in Louisiana, but raised in this state. Sir? It's a uh Right here. Silver carp. Bought it at the gas station. Bought it at the store. Silver carp. Asian carp, probably. Asian carp, yeah. That's a Uh be done. Asian carp. They got different names in Louisiana. >> Okay. All right. Here, you can reel that in, thank you. You got them all in? Uh yes, sir. Okay, thank you, guys. All right, [snorts] yeah, we'll look at your permits and driver's license, please. So, I do not have my fishing permit with me, sir. I'll be honest with you, I got my driver's license, my fishing permit is active. That works. Yep, I got you. Ours is on our phones. Yeah, that's fine. This is my son, he's Where did you guys put in at? Okay. Where'd you do Where did you launch the boat? Right here in Truman, uh At the dam? Yes, sir. Where you got to be? Thank you. And you got your permit, too? Uh my fishing is on my phone. >> Patrick, yeah, bring go and bring that up, thank you. About where exactly >> Jasper. Where exactly did you catch that spoonbill? Like right where we're at now? >> Right here. Right here, okay. I caught it in the same spot. >> Got you, okay, thank you. Is he getting his permit out, too? Yeah, it's on his phone. Okay. It's a big spoonbill. We're assuming that's a keeper. Yeah. You guys know the length limit? To be honest with you, not not exactly. I kind of got a idea, but Okay. What do you think it is? This is really first time we ever did it, to be honest. Yeah. Hey. I'd say I don't know how long he is for sure, but I'd say he probably It's got to It's a pretty big one. Okay, hit the top three lines at the top corner. Yep. This one? Yep. Yep, perfect, thank you. Then we can just scan it, and then we don't have to worry about dropping your phone in the water. Um We cannot snag above Highway 65 bridge, which is not this bridge, but the next one way down. So, anything in here is illegal to snag. Okay. So, If you think about it, Truman Dam's right there where you launched. These These fish travel up, so they get congregated up here, so it's restricted water. Yeah. No problem, sir. I honestly didn't know. No, well, we're we're We'll get you educated. So, that makes makes that fish illegal cuz you caught it where you can't snag. Does that make sense? Right. Okay. So, do you all take it? Yeah, we're going to take fish because um yeah, you can't can't possess it here. And um Yeah, so the Does that You guys know which bridge I'm talking about? The second bridge here? Yeah, the second bridge down there. You go go past the uh I've been here before. You go down there, take a left. It's only a curve to the left. Yep. So, anything above that bridge cannot snag above. Now, if you put it in here, you can bring your fish that you caught down below the bridge up, but you can't catch anything right here. Okay? All right, so No problem. I I had I had the same issue last year at Niangua Dam. I did not know you can snag over there, neither. Okay. But, over the bridge y'all, indeed. Can we see your rods that got the hooks on them, please? The white ones? Yeah, the snagging hooks. Snagging hooks? This is mine, sir. Okay, yep. Where's your one at? Snagging? Right here. Ooh, what's that? >> [clears throat] >> Can you shine it like a little bit down, Chase? Yeah, there you go. Thank you. I want to just take a picture of the other one, please. Uh it's got the Yeah, I can see it. Thank you. Are they illegal? What's that? I said No, nothing about the hooks are illegal. It's just your location. Okay. Okay. Yep. Yeah, if you were below that bridge, it's We'll be We'll be fine. >> It's probably 2 mi down. You would You would be fine. All right. So, uh we'll go ahead. >> [sighs] >> You want to put that fish in your boat, Chase, with the other fish? >> Yep. You want some help? It's quite heavy. I can get it. Hey, you want to hand it up to me? Hang on, let me get this thing. Here's this one. If you want to hand me its gills, I can grab it. I got the boat. I got the boat. I'll get the fish. I'm getting it. Okay, thanks. Now, if you would, let's motor right over there. There's another game warden right over there. Okay. Across the way. Just will might Go over there and we'll handle the rest of business, okay? So, y'all just want to give me a Give me a ticket for the illegal Yeah, we're Yeah, you You guys are both You're definitely going to get a ticket for snagging in restricted waters, um Okay. And then I want to double-check his age and we'll go from there. Do you have a light Do you have an actual red light for your front? >> Running lights? Yes, sir. No, like the red and the green. Yeah, okay, good. And And show me three life jackets, if we could. Three life jackets? You got all kinds of lights on there. I have one. Two. I got three more in the front of this one. Just Just show me three and I'm happy, okay? Good. Good. Good. That That looks a little small. Give me that one over there. Oh no, that's I see it. That's a full size. Okay, it looked It was just watered up. >> three more in there. Okay, yeah. Do you see what I'm talking about? It's right over there at the other ramp. Yes, sir. We can put it back in there now. We'll make sure they're there. Thank you. Is he alive or not? We release him or not? Can you get him at all? Maybe we don't. That's a That's a big old fish. Maybe a little bit. Take care of that lady. I mean You good with that? Yeah. Okay. We got the fish already. Which one do you want? Okay. He's He's got the IDs. You guys have any other fish? Nothing in the cooler, though. Okay. You all looked in there? >> I haven't looked in the cooler yet. Anything Anybody got anything on their record at all as far as being in trouble with the law? No, sir. Speeding tickets. Speeding tickets. >> Traffic tickets, that's it. Nothing outstanding? No, sir. Okay. We're going to run them through the dispatch, make sure everything's clean on them, and then go from there. And then Yeah, you at least get a ticket for basically snagging in restricted waters. And then No problem. The fish will be given away. It ain't going to go to waste. Okay. I don't think We're trying to see if it'll revive, but if he I don't I don't know what time you >> it pretty good with that gaff hook. What's that? I stuck it pretty good with that gaff hook. >> Ah, okay. So, I don't He may have I don't know if he It may have got him. How How long ago did you catch it? I guess about 30 minutes ago. 30 minutes, okay. We're going to see See it'll revive. If it'll revive and looks like it'll swim, I'll let it go, but otherwise we'll just give it away. And then I'm trying to think what else is make sure you can't don't use any game fish or parts of of game fish for bait. Really? No, can't do any of that. >> You can use perch here, right? >> Right. You can use perch, but like don't use any parts of a of a paddlefish. >> Can they sell that in a store? No, no, no, that's not a game fish. Oh, okay. That's considered like a rough fish. Okay. No, we wouldn't. No, I'm talking about like Like bass or a crappie? >> Bass, crappie, catfish. >> I understand, man. Uh paddlefish, um but like shad, bluegill, um No whiting. drum, you can use all that for bait. Okay. Yeah, okay. That was good. Yeah, that's a little north. I'm going to give you that. That's my card with my cell phone number. If you got questions about regulations, Yeah. make sure you either look them up or call me that way. I I tried, but y'all's rules are just so funny up here and different. I got a ticket last year uh at the Bagnell Dam. Yeah. And so our game warden, all that, I mean, you know, I was snagging right there below the bridge. First of all, that was a good spot. It's like right It's like right here. Yeah, right. And uh So, he called me to the bank. He was like, "Hey, how's it going, man?" And I And I'm not trying to [ __ ] nobody, you know? If you don't know better, you don't know better, you know? I mean, and he's like, "What are you doing, man?" I was like, "I was snagging, you know?" He's like, "Oh, you just snagging for?" Cuz I mean, I know y'all are trained how to talk to people, you know what I'm saying? Yeah, I've been [clears throat] there. And so anyway, he kept asking me these questions. I was like, "Oh, man, I was trying to snag some catfish, you know?" And he's like, "Oh, really? Okay." And I was like, Is he pulling one on him, huh? And uh he's like, "Well, uh you know, fishing license and stuff, all that." He never told me nothing yet, you know? Know better. And then uh same thing like right here, you know, he's he's like, "Okay, y'all come on, we'll go go to the bank." Hello. And he's like, "Well, do you know in the state of Missouri is against the law to snag for catfish?" I was like, God. Ah. You got to be kidding me. I didn't even know it was against the law period to snag for a catfish. Okay. You know what I'm saying? Louisiana, you can snag anything you want. >> Really? You know, Okay. it's totally different. >> While the regulations are different in Louisiana, Louisiana identifies numerous species illegal to snag. These fish include bass, crappie, bream, and paddlefish. Yeah, here it's just going to be rough fish. Yeah, exactly. And then Like uh carp, buffalo, gar. And then uh drum. And then he's like, "Well, also uh you're not supposed to be that close to the dam snag." And he said, "Now you can be right here catfishing." Ah. He said, "But you can't be that close. You got to be past the bridge, you know." Yeah, yeah. The reason for the rule here is the fish are all stacked up in here. Yeah, and I I get that, but people don't always think like that. I mean, Maybe they also put a big sign or something right here. Well, there's a sign. Uh there's Where is it at? There's one somewhere. Brown sign. >> [clears throat] >> You know, it just tell you >> It's somewhere up here. Just to let people know, "Hey, you know, keep going down, you know, if you want to snag." Right. Well, they're at all the They're at the boat ramps, too. Right. So. All right. Well, I'm going to get started on that, and then we'll get get right back to you. Thank you. You probably need bigger letters on your boat. Yeah. I I think it's supposed to be 2 in letters. I do got two cans coming in. Yep. >> Okay. I just moved got into a new house. Got you. Yep. You don't mail them to me. Well, get it get the boat updated and get 2 in 2 in blocks. I can look it up for you to be sure. Number must be at least 3 in high block letters. >> high. Colors contrast. The boat. You have black boat, you can't have black letters. Must be separated by at least a 2-in space. So like like the right here like MO 2 in number 2 in. But the your spaces are probably fine, but those letters are they need to be almost double that size. Let me go over this ticket with you, okay? So it's a nature ticket for take paddlefish by snagging from restricted waters above 65 bridge. Okay? I got it. You got to you can take care of this through the mail if you choose to do that. You can just pay it over the phone or something. You can do it online or you can do it through the mail. There's a blue sheet of paper I'm going to give you that tell exactly how to do all that. Okay? If you did want to come to court, you could. It would be May 13th back here in Warsaw, but that's just your due process. Okay. So if you understand what I wrote you a ticket for, sign where I put that X and you're just signing that you understand what the ticket is for. Do you know about what these tickets run for? We cannot tell you the fine amounts. The courts do not allow us to do that and that's that's the truth. Wait about 2 weeks for this ticket to get posted on Case Net and then try to take care of it after 2 weeks. And then you can get the fine amount off of Case Net and then you can pay it if you want to go that route. Okay? This blue sheet of paper will explain all that in detail. All right, just make sure you do something before your court date, okay? Does all that make sense for you? Yes, sir. Okay. Well, now I know why nobody was snagging out here. >> [laughter] >> All right, and then your blue sheet of paper is right there as well. Yeah, the blue sheet of paper has all the instructions on it. Yep. Okay? And then number or something to It's a website. Oh, it got online. You got to go on there to get the fine amount and then follow these instructions if you want to plead guilty and pay it. That's that's if you want to go that route. And then you got my card if you got questions. Yes, sir. You call or text. And we'll help you. That [clears throat] way you don't have to get more tickets, okay? Sure will. So So we appreciate y'all uh y'all uh nice How How can I say that? Well, we ain't mad at you. professional in this. You know what I'm saying? I done I done put up with the game wardens and the law, you know, and look, it was it got ugly. Well, we don't like doing that. And people just don't know some people don't know how to talk, you know? Good people or how to take a people. Sure. Sure. But uh All right. Well, if I ever see you give me a good deal, okay? >> [laughter] >> No problem. Be safe, guys. Okay, fellas. Be safe, guys. All right. See you, guys. Take care.
