In the state of Wisconsin, anglers are typically allowed a total bag limit of five salmon and or trout. It's a combined limit. You're at nine fish? >> Look, just friend of me left, you know. >> What's that? >> Friend friend gave me, you know, he left directly. >> It seems that in so many of these videos, the people who are in excess of the daily limit were given the fish by a mysterious stranger who disappeared or just some random generous friend who left and went home. Now, I think what a lot of people fail to realize is that a lot of game wardens know how many fish you have or if you're over the limit before they even make contact. In many cases, officers will dress up in plain clothing or watch from a somewhat concealed location and they'll have a good idea who is violating the law and taking too many fish. And then when they make contact, when people lie to them and fail to present fish, it can actually lead to additional criminal charges. >> Okay, how many fish So, okay. It's always shocking to be how many people just put these fish down right inside their car, right on the mat or on a towel, like it's not going to stink up the car. Preserve the meat properly. Don't do that to your car. Coolers are cheap, cooler bags are cheap. Um So, the limit's five and you have nine. Um since these four are separate over here, um I have to take four fish cuz you can't have more than five. So, I'll take these four fish unless you want me to take some different ones from that pile. Um what you say? I'm I have to take four fish. I'm going to seize four fish from you. So, I'll just take these four unless there's some fish you want to swap out. I'll let you choose what fish I take. >> it's not this if I can I >> Yeah, so I'll take Are you good with me taking these ones? >> Yeah, yeah. Okay. >> Okay. So, I'm just showing that I took um these fish from you. >> You can check my history. Never warning, never you know penalty, nothing. >> Okay. All right, so So, this is just showing that that I seized the fish from you. And you It's a receipt, basically. I'll put my name on it. My name's Travis. Um And he has my phone number. >> And I have to go to court or not? >> Um yeah, give me a second here. Okay, so this is showing that I took the four and steelhead. Put my phone number is on here if you have any questions. So, I'm going to issue a citation for over bagging, okay? You were You're four fish over. The limit's five, so you had nine fish. Um I'll issue a citation. I'll send it to you in the mail to that address that I confirmed with you in Crystal Lake. Um There'll be a court date on it. You don't have to go to court, um but if you decide not to, just make sure you pay the ticket by that day, okay? >> And how much is it? >> Um it goes by percentage that you're over, so um I think this gets lumped in the 80 to 100% over cuz you had four fish. So, I can't I It's just guessing what it is. It's probably going to be around three or 400 or maybe more. So, you can go to court if you would like. You can discuss with them everything that you talked to me about with um not having any trouble before, and sometimes they do reduce citations, but uh it's going to be a little bit more for this cuz you're at that almost 100% over being having four extra fish. Um >> Not the warning. No No nothing. >> No, I can't give you a warning for that. >> It is always shocking to me when people in this situation ask for a warning. As a quick recap, he lied and said he had five fish. His story changed multiple times, and he attempted to conceal the fish inside of his vehicle. I do think that warnings can be a valuable tool with educating the public, but that's for simple mistakes, not someone who's four fish over the limit hiding them in their car. To even think that the officer is going to entertain the idea of a warning in this situation is crazy. >> These steelhead are especially with I mean, I would still write the ticket in in fall for like the king salmon that are running, even though they're dying. But these salmon, especially those small ones, um we're going to make their way back out to the lake and come back in these following years. So, um so you're just taking fish that could have reproduced here in the river. So. >> Really, you know, I I'm so disciplined, that's why I want to you know >> I don't have any decision making on how much the citation costs, but if you did decide to go to your court date, you can discuss with them and they do um at times reduce um the citation amount. So that's that's up to them and up to you to go to to discuss that with them. So, do you have any questions for me? Um do you have an extra bag you can throw those fish in? >> Can I put this? >> Do you have a clean one? >> Yep. >> Otherwise, we can just throw them in. >> Is it okay? >> Yep, that works. >> Yeah, that works. >> Is it okay? >> Um let's just throw them in here. Well, you did good for you caught nine Not many people catch that many fish, so you're doing something right, but just you need to make sure you keep just your limit. >> Experience. >> Yeah. There's a lot of people that are doing what you're doing out here. You're not the only one. But, if you see anyone doing anything that that you're doing now that you're getting a citation for it, you can let me know so that everyone um that's doing it uh you know, gets caught doing it. So. >> I don't find do it, you know. I just worry about myself, you know. And I was stupid, you know, like today. But, >> I understand you're catching a lot of fish and yeah. >> What can I say, you know? >> So, you had a good nice pile of fish there though. Um Just yeah, you're done for the day fishing, okay? All right, have a safe day. >> All right, so in the end the angler was charged with being in possession of any fish in excess of 76% or more over the total daily bag limit. That charge is fairly unique to Wisconsin. In most other states, the angler would be looking at four individual charges for being in excess of the daily bag limit. Now, he Now, he ultimately played no contest to the charge and was adjudicated guilty. He was ultimately ordered to pay $232.95 in cost and fines, which he later paid. That's it for today's video.
