An officer with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources was on patrol when he observed an angler harvest a snagged walleye. >> How we doing? >> Good. >> Oh, not too bad. Just getting warm. How's the fishing today? >> It was all right earlier, but it's pretty much died down now. >> died off? I got you. I got you. What you end up with? >> I got two. >> You got two? Okay. >> We got 10. >> 10 total? >> 10 total? Uh are those your two on the yellow stringer then? >> Yeah. >> Okay. I'm I'm just And then you got Is that Is that you here then? Okay. And then 1 2 We got five. Cool. Well, if I could take a look at your fishing licenses real quick. I'd appreciate it. >> I'll show you on the phone here. >> Yeah. Yeah, that's great. >> I got an email and I told him this morning. I said, "Damn, my my fishing license expires today." >> I got you. Sure enough. Good till >> Good for a year. >> Yep. Yep. >> This is a lot different than uh >> Oh, yeah. >> All right. He's clicking on one second. All right. Thank you, sir. Are you guys all out of Vermilion now? >> Yeah, they're all >> Well, I am. >> They are It's This is a lot different than going from the boat, man. This is >> Oh, yeah. >> It's crazy being able to feel it all. >> Oh, yeah. That's different. You guys do a bunch of lake fishing then? >> Yeah. >> I hear you. >> Yeah, it's a lot of fun. >> I got you. >> Drifting Drifting is similar. >> Yeah. >> Yeah, I like casting. >> a lot of trolling. >> Yeah. Trolling is a great way to get some fish with their limit. If they're If they're If you can catch them casting, that's that's the way to do it for sure. I agree. >> Yeah, I got a 9-year-old and a 5-year-old. A 9-year-old is finally able to start reeling them in. >> It's a good thing. >> Okay. Perfect. So, um reason I came over to talk to you guys is um I don't know if you you heard or you're not from around here haven't fished the river much, but the hook actually needs to be on the inside of the mouth. You can't just hook them up on the body or up in the head area. The hook's actually got to be in the mouth. Okay? So, I was watching you guys and I didn't see all your fish, but several of your fish were hooked outside on the head area. Okay? And needed to be released. Anybody told you about snagging up here before? >> No. >> Okay. Okay. So, they actually need to be hooked inside the mouth. Like, you know, um well, here I'll let me Like, uh I'll have to look exactly my notes, but I think um I think you had one in the eyeball. Uh his last fish, I believe, on the stringer was hooked in the eyeball and then this one You caught this fish. That one was legal. This one was way back in the collar. You know, you had it like way back up under the gill. That was the one you struggled to take off the hook. You had it in the net. Had the net between your knees and then you used Actually, I think right there probably is where it was at. You're sitting there or yeah, see that how it's all tore up? When it's hooked way outside the mouth, hook these actually inside to be legal. >> I did not know that. >> But, let me just set these over here once. >> They feel large. Can we throw them back in? >> Well, it's it's a little late for that. It ended up on the stringer, guys. Sorry. So, um I'm going to need your IDs and then I can get your driver's license. And then, sir, you're I didn't see your first fish, but your second one you nailed him right here in the cheek. >> Yeah, I think he >> So, >> the hook the thing. >> So, no, he didn't. Okay? So, I I don't want to argue with anybody on the river, but I I watch stuff and it was when a jig is hooked in the face of the fish, >> Uh-huh. >> you need to turn it loose. Okay? That's a foul hooked fish. It's no different than snagging it in the tail. They actually need to be hooked in the mouth. Yes, sir. So, again, if if you guys like I said, if you guys haven't ever been in trouble before, with stuff like this, then like I said, we'll keep it we'll keep it like a mistake. Well, this is what I'm going to say. It's not going to mess you up. You'll be able to wave it. You don't have to come back in court. It's when if you guys have come and do this again next year, that's when we'd be like, "Hey, they they know what's going on." So, like I said, it'll I'll I'll write you Everybody's going to get a ticket. Each one of you, cuz each illegally took a fish today. But, uh you'll be able to wave it, and it's not going to >> How do you know somebody else didn't? >> Cuz I watched you do it, sir, okay? I watched you catch it. All right. So, >> Well, I thought it was hooked in the mouth, honestly. >> It it it wasn't. So, um again, like I said, I'm not I'm not trying to come down here to be rude. It sounds like you guys uh hadn't had heard the rules here on the river. Um but, it is important that the fish um If I could just borrow one of your jigs here, just to Is that curly tail? Um Like I said, so needs to be The hook needs to pierce the inside of the fish's mouth. All right? Um can't be up on the head, in the eyeball, in the cheek, you know? It actually needs to be hooked inside. Cuz as many fish are in the river right now, they're really vulnerable during the spawn, and you know how thick they are in there. If you could just cast and reel, you can you can foul hook them and bring them in like that, and they're not even necessarily biting. So, the rest of your fish, I didn't see, and like you said, somebody else could snag them, and that's why I'm not looking at I'm not looking at these fish trying to find a a snag mark and accuse you anything. You know what I mean? Cuz I I don't know. I didn't see you catch that fish. I'm not looking at that fish, is what I'm saying. So, I'm just addressing I saw I saw your group catch four fish. Three of them were snagged. And so, that's that's how we we take care of things today, okay? So, uh >> All right. >> Appreciate it. Thanks, sir. And then, like I said, if you guys have your ID Oh, do you have it ready? Thanks, sir. >> Nothing like a good smack the ass. You got to let me know that. >> I guess so. >> Somebody's responsibility to read up on the rules again. >> That's That's what it is and and like like you said, you guys are nuisance deer shooters. If you were If you were out shooting, you know, giant bucks out of a truck bed with a thermal or something, that's a little That's a little That's a little different story. This is just like I said, unfortunately, something we have to enforce cuz there are people down here. They'll change clothes. They'll rip fish out of the river. They do all sorts of crazy things. So, you weren't doing anything nuts, but we still have to address it. And and and sometimes, you know, a ticket's how you learn. I wish I could have talked to you before you started fishing and advise you of that. >> By God, me, too. >> But unfortunately, that is where we're at today. But again, like I said, it's it's not going to You're not going to lose your right to hunt or fish. You don't even have to come back to court unless you want to. >> It's just a monetary just paying >> It's It's It's basically like a speeding ticket. Yep. If you want to If you want to pay it and be done, you can be done. Okay? >> That sucks. I ain't never been in trouble before, but I am. So. >> Well, if it If it makes you feel any better, when I was 20, I went on the wrong side of a wildlife area, and I went strolling onto the It's It's a Kill Your Plains. Are you familiar with that? >> No. >> Part of it's state refuge. You can't set foot on it. Yeah, some tags and stuff. I went on the wrong side of the road. I came walking I had a pair of binoculars. I was I was bird watching and all things. There was a wildlife officer with his lights on, and I'm like, "Who, me?" And And he he pointed to a sign. I walked between two signs, you know, they're about 100 yd apart, cuz I thought the whole area was public, and I went on the wrong side. I didn't do my job to learn on it, and then he about laughed his head off when he found out I wanted to be a game warden. So, I guess what I'm trying to say is, if you hunt fish long enough, you can sometimes mess some things up. You guys are being great today. I appreciate that. Some people are down here in the parking lot mother effing me and whatnot. So, it I I I appreciate Oh, yeah. So, like I said, I appreciate you guys being being decent. It's just If you ever have a question and you're coming to fish something or or do something for the first time, our numbers are listed by county. If you want to call that office and say, "Hey, is there anything I need to know? Did you know about the Quinte time when you're fishing here?" >> No. Sunrise to sunset. >> Right. You can only It's It's very specific rules fishing here. So, you can only fish from sunrise to sunset. You can only use a single hook. >> No more than a half inch. >> No more than a half inch. >> I can't remember. All I really knew was no treble hooks. It's just a single. >> there's like I said, there's some very specific uh regulations here on the Sandusky and the Maumee to protect >> the walleye >> the walleye when they run. Yeah. >> You catch them with? >> Yeah. Cuz what What we have is guys will come down with these giant They call them snatchers, snag hooks. You know, just giant and they'll just rip them through the water and try to try to snag fish. So, it's it's crazy what some people will do. >> Dude, I When I was a kid, you was allowed to snag fish. >> Some fish you can. Some fish you can. So, if it's a rough fish like a sucker, a carp, you know, um I think you can snag uh you can't snag catfish, but there's there's certain species shad, you know, like cat bait fish you can snag, but sport fish, so a bass, crappie, bluegill, perch, walleye, white bass, you you can't snag those. >> Oh. >> Yeah. So, but anyway, I don't want to hold you guys up. If you're cold, you want to hop in the truck. I got a little bit of writing to do. If you guys >> Hey, no no. Like I said, as decent as you guys have been, like I I really appreciate it. I'll put it in my statement. Like I said, sometimes people down here are a nightmare. So, I I hate to meet you this way and then I wish I could I wish I could do more for you, but like I said, >> There's one thing about it. It won't happen again. >> And that's That's That's all we can ask. That's great. I appreciate that. So, >> What is that number, do you know? >> Um I'll double check before I leave. I'll let you know that number, okay? I'll be right back with you. Um so, these Starting at the top, so that's Fremont Municipal Court. Uh then comes your personal information. I crossed out order to appear. There's a court date and time, April 9th. The only difference is uh sir, your last name's earlier in the alphabet, so your court will be at 9:00 if you'd like to appear. Theirs is at 1:30 cuz >> Yeah, I'm in the bad, dude. >> I I have to advise you of it, and I appreciate it. I I just have to say that. So, that's your court time. You do not have to appear, like I already said. The charge on there is, as we discussed, took a walleye by hooking it somewhere besides the inside of the mouth. Uh fish uh violations are misdemeanors of the fourth degree in Ohio. It's a $150 waiver if you want to just pay it and be done with it, okay? Okay. Well, hey, drive safe. We'll see you. >> Thank you. >> If you like this video and want to see more like it, subscribe to Arrest Cam. As always, thanks for watching.
