An officer with the Idaho Department of Fish and Game was patrolling the Ryder Park's pond in Idaho Falls. He observed three individuals returning to their car, each carrying a fishing pole, and one carrying a grocery bag with fish. >> How's it going, guys? >> Good. How are you? >> Doing all right. Just out checking some fishing licenses today. >> Uh I don't have mine. Mine's in my car. >> You It's in your car? >> Yeah. >> Okay. Do you guys have yours? >> I was over there. I was just sitting over there. I don't have my fishing license. >> You don't have your fishing license? >> No. >> Okay. How many fish you guys got there? >> Two. >> Just two? >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> Yeah. >> Cool. All right. Well, I'll just go inspect your car and Is there anybody else fishing down there? >> No. There's one other dude down there. >> over there. >> Okay. >> How's your day going? >> Can't complain. >> Yeah. Um All right, so there's something we can do. So, normally, I wouldn't issue a ticket. You're 18 years old. Um but you're saying you've got a fishing license. You've got fish in possession. >> Yeah. >> Um What I'm going to do is I'm going to write a I'm going to write a ticket up. >> Okay. >> It's um it's going to be kind of like an insurance ticket. >> All right. >> It's not a it's It's a full-on fishing without a license. >> Yeah. >> Okay. So, here's the deal is that it's going to be timestamped and dated >> Okay. >> for right now, today. >> Um this will be your last chance to like let me know if you don't have a license. So, uh if you do have a license and you find it, >> Yeah. >> you'll bring it down to the courthouse with you >> Okay. >> with the ticket that I'm going to give you and you show them the fishing license and the fishing license will be timestamped and dated >> Yeah. >> and if that's before right now, >> then >> then it's just see you later, it's nothing. >> Okay. >> Um if it's not timestamped before today, right now, >> then it turns into a fishing without a license ticket, which is a misdemeanor violation. >> Okay. >> All right? >> All right. >> So, >> I'm I'm confident 90% positive I have one. I just don't know where it's at. >> I I I try to give everybody every chance they got. >> I feel you. >> Um cuz it it's it just gets worse if you show up and you didn't have one, right? >> yeah. >> Um Okay. So, what I'll have you do is I'll have you uh >> Step out and >> Yeah, you guys can hang out in the car. I'll have you come with me just cuz I need your personal information >> Of course, yeah. >> for the for the ticket. >> No problem. >> Okay. >> I told her if it's in my other car in my wallet, but I I know it's from like a backpack I thought when I was home. >> Okay. Don't bring your buddies fishing with you if they're not they don't have a license. >> All right. >> Okay. They're not getting tickets today because I didn't actually see them fish. I appreciate you being candid. >> Yeah. >> Um you know, pretty clear normally when three people are walking out and each person is holding a fishing pole, >> Yeah, >> pretty clear they all went fishing. Yeah, I feel you. No problem. >> You know, um but >> You guys give me and everybody else I know respect, so I'll give you guys respect. I It's you know, my mom always told me be honest and be polite, so I try my best to do that. >> Totally. I appreciate that. Um I've got your personal information. All I have you do is why don't you head back over to car, hang out with your buddies for a minute. Um let me scratch this out. >> Sounds good. >> All right. And um And then I'm going to write a receipt. It's going to be for the seizure of the fish. Um, and then I'll have to give you that receipt. It's Yeah, it says that I took something that was a possession of yours, basically. Just documents it. I'll come over and grab you um when I get done with it. Um, we'll talk about Let me get it scratched out and I can go through the whole thing, answer any questions you got. Sounds good. Okay. Yep. >> Unfortunately, the officer did not remember to activate his body camera when returning to the suspect. However, based on the officer's report, the officer issued him an infraction for exceeding the daily bag limit for rainbow trout. Normally, the suspect would have been within the bag limit, but without a license, he was not permitted to be in possession of any fish. The suspect later played guilty to the charge and was ordered to pay $136 in costs and fines, which he later paid. The officer determined the rainbow trout were inedible and disposed of both fish.
