On February 7th, 2024, Alaska's Department of Fish and Game received a report from a port sampler that a commercial vessel had offloaded undersized King Salmon. Upon arrival, the officer made contact with a suspect, a 42-year-old male named Kale. Hey, how's it going? I don't know. Are you in front of Jerger or behind? How are you? Good. [Music] Holy smokes. [Music] Did you look at him? [Music] small. You cut all the chin straps or pop all the chin straps off. Yeah. How you normally do it, huh? Is that how you do it? Some people do. [Music] Little short there, huh? [Music] That was awfully close. King salmon are required to measure at least 28 in from the tip of the snout to the tip of the tail in its natural position. Okay. Have you weighed these already? That's all we But I can You want to add that one? Okay, that one's okay. Yep. Okay. [Music] Oh, we can weigh them, but they're going to go with me. They're looking up, you know, straight out. I did that. Yeah. So, so what's what do you think the problem is there? I think maybe I just need a better. Okay. But I think I threw maybe I got a big snarl yesterday. Okay. I was just throwing there was a big tangle and I was throwing some fish on the boat and I kind of got all messed up with the occurred, you know. But you got a big bunch of them all at once. Well, it was uh two lines. Two lines together. How many spreads are you fishing? Um well, four lines and like about 12 or 15 on each line. So, okay. So, that's enough to make a big mess. Yeah. Lose a bunch of gear, but it was like, you know, reset kind of. Right. Right. All right. Try another crash. Okay. So, you fished today or? Yeah, I fished today. And yesterday? Yeah, I fished uh I started on Saturday. Okay. Fished every day. Five days. Okay. How many did you end up with total? Uh that was 67 with the short ones. Okay. Any fish on board at all? No. Okay. None. Nothing. No rockfish. No link cut. Nothing. Nothing. Okay. All right. Is your permit card up here then? It looks like. Yeah. [Music] Cool. Got to redo my measuring device. What do you use? I just made a line in my trough. Okay. I was thinking maybe when they in the trough, the tail lays down or something. Is this a new boat for you then? Yeah. How how new? This winter or I've had it three years, but I don't fish it very often because I just got it like kind of working. Okay. So, yeah, I I work on the Cherokee most of the time, right? I was just like trying to get some, you know, got the bug going so like get out there and run it. Sure. Bad black season. Still really low prices. They're not doesn't sound good for this season. So, huh. That's I think that's why there's so much effort out there right now cuz everyone's like worried about the season. So, what are they paying for king salmon here? I think it's eight bucks. This is my first delivery. Oh, is it? I've never king fish before. Really? You just out there on the line or Yeah, with everybody else. First day was like really crappy weather and I was like I didn't know the drag morning drag so I was just trying to get out trying to follow the leader. Yeah. Yeah. And then by today I was I got the hang of it but it was like there was like probably 30 at least I'd say 30 something boats out there. Yeah. Nice day. Yeah. Not much swell out there. No. Today was like really nice Saturday. Yeah, it was pretty gross Saturday. I went out on Friday, didn't fish. I was like, guys fishing. Stay stay at Lazar or something over there. I went over by um Morca. Oh, yeah. Simons or Oh, on the other side of Simons. Oh, okay. So, yeah, that Westerly is well wraps into Simon's pretty good. So, it's pretty bouncy in there, right? Huh. last night. The last two nights, St. Louis Missouri was okay. So, yeah, the wind's kind of the right direction now. So, well, it's been some good fishing this winter. So, yeah, I just saw that thing in the paper like I didn't I didn't see it, but I heard there was something for January or for I didn't read it. Someone told me record early on. There was uh there was some big ones. Yeah. Some October. There was some some good fishing. I was in Yakat. It was driving me nuts. Yeah. Uh I'll let you sign your fish ticket and uh get your stuff and I'll come down to the boat with you. Heading back out in the morning. I don't know. Probably not. Take a take a day off. Yeah. Yeah. It's like tomorrow is nice and then Friday is not nice. So, I don't know. So, nothing in any of these totes scale. Uh, this got ice in it. Okay. And in the old you got This one's got ice in it also. Just ballast. Mind if I take a look? Yeah. Yeah, you can. It's hard to see in this [Music] side. Lots of clean ice in [Music] there. Cool. All ready for the next load, huh? And what do you use to measure that? Yeah. [Music] I put a line right here. So, that's what we had right here. I can tell you what what probably your issue is cuz I've seen it before. Um, it's the measuring in a V like that. Um, so you put their head on this end. Yeah. Hey, hey, hey. Don't want to get sprayed when it's not raining. I have to. Your mark's slightly short. Oh, that's the problem. Well, that wouldn't explain what I'm seeing. But, uh, the other thing that happens is when you put them in a in a V notch like this. Uhhuh. Um, that pinches the tail, right? So, makes the tail flatten out. And when you measure them, you don't get to do that. So, you kind of you could use that as a as a basic checker, but if they're close, you need something like a flat something. They actually sell them at Murray's. Um, uh, you know, you could make it yourself, but, uh, something with a vertical surface and, you know, at least 28 in long, um, and wide enough to fit the tail. So, probably need it to be 6 in wide. Um, okay. So, or you can do it. A lot of people have a spot on their deck that's got a vertical surface and there's a good like Yeah, I just do it right there. It's like from your kind of like rough. So that's why I'm I don't know. I guess I can just get make something though instead. Uh I mean yeah, you could you could have a little piece of plastic back there to lay them on and use a one of your one of your bleeder boxes or you know Yeah. However you want to do it. Do something. Yeah. I I would um you got your ID handy and uh Yeah. Nice boat. Thanks. It's like kind of rebuilt. A lot of work. Yeah. You have to like pull the engine or No, engine's still the same, but like everything's new. Like electronics and that all electrical. I rewired the whole boat. Oh, that's a project and a half. Yeah, it took like 6 months or something. I don't really know how to I'm not really an electrician. I had some help, you know. It's running. Yeah, you must have figured something out. Uh, stuff works. So, is it like 47 or is it over 50? It's 40. There's 56. 56. There was a 47 and then stretched it in the middle. Yeah. So, it's like kind of where the hatch is, I think, is the ad. They put it in the middle, I guess. So, yeah. Well, it's the strongest way to do it, I think. Yeah. I guess they have a mold for it. So, they just chop it in half and Yep. I've seen them do it with a bunch of different types of boots. All right. Well, unfortunately, we got to write a citation for having undersized fish. So, I mean, you seems like you understand the the issues there. Yeah. Um and you got several of them. So, four to be exact. Um, none of them are like extremely extremely under, but uh, but they're under. So, and I there was one more that was slightly under that I gave you. I'm not I'm not interested in splitting hairs. So, but uh, yeah, I'm not going to this. Okay. All right. Do you hear who this is that's disabled? No. Like on the way in I heard it say something and then like Apple. They're in Apple. They just need a jump, I think. Oh yeah, I heard them saying on this book. It's easy. So I have to go for this. Yeah, unfortunately you do. You going to be here on the 20th of February? I guess so. Can I change it if something comes up or is it you could talk to the court about it and ask for it to be changed? I wouldn't I wouldn't oppose it and you know if you if you need to. So I think they'll ask me typically the only thing I'd be doing is fishing but other than that you could potentially set it up so that you're uh you can appear telephonically but you'll have to talk to the court about doing that. Um they were letting everybody appear telephonic during CO, but it that's sort of come to an end. Oh yeah. So, okay. So, that's a summons for having undersized king salmon. What it says on there is that you had four undersized king salmon less than 28 in and you need to show up in court on the 20th at 2:30. Okay. Um and like we talked about, if you need to change that, you could you can talk to the court about that. Uh but otherwise they'll expect you to be in the chair there. Okay. Okay. Um yeah. Any questions for me since you're sort of you're not new to this but uh well new new to being the I guess was like my big question cuz like I I know like sometimes you put it on there and like one tip of the tail is over. That's all you need. and like but but you don't get to pinch it and you don't get to, you know, bend the fish to make it make the tail straighten out. Same thing with the chin straps. Even if they're caught, I'm just going to turn it back into a fish. I'm not going to measure it with the chin sticking way out there. Those or No, I don't think it matters, but uh um yeah, some some guys leave them leave them attached, some don't. So the question was that whether you did that on those ones on purpose or Oh no, you just do it did it on all I thought that's just how you do it, but I honestly these days don't know what the plants want. I know when I was when I was a kid there plants that would number two fish for that. Oh, really? But I don't think they care anymore at all. So no, they definitely don't care now. Yeah, I never like trolled it before. I got a troller. So, yeah. Right. Yeah. No, definitely a different deal. So, okay. Um Well, well, yeah, we'll see you on the on the 20th then. I won't be seeing me doing this again. Okay. All right, man. Well, glad to hear family life is good and things are sound like things are looking up. Yeah, doing pretty good. Yeah. All right. This is avoidable. Yeah. Well, yeah, be careful out there and uh we we'll see you around. Okay. So, be safe. Good to see you. In the end, four out of the 66 salmon caught that day were determined to be undersized. Kale was charged with unlawful retention of undersized king salmon by a commercial angler. He plead guilty and was initially ordered to pay $2,870 in fines, but the prosecutor dismissed $1,000 of it. He has since paid the $1,870 that he owed. According to the officer's report, three of the salmon were donated to the Pioneer Home and one was retained as evidence. If you like this video and want to see more like it, subscribe to Arrest Cam.
