An officer with the Missouri Department of Conservation received an anonymous tip advising him of two deer being confined in a fence on a residential property. >> Tim Derek Childers, conservation agent. Hey, the reason I'm here, I got a call that you got some deer pinned. >> Okay. Is it when they said it was right over there? Do you have some deer pinned up? I do. Okay. How long have you had them? >> Eight years. >> Eight years. >> Yeah. >> Okay. So, you know you can't have deer pinned up without permits, right? >> No. >> No. Okay. Where did you get them at? Did you buy them from somebody or >> No, they were actually both injured. >> They're both injured. Okay. So, um like I said, you can't take wild. So, they came from the wild, I'm guessing, right? >> Yeah. >> Okay. So, you can't take >> I mean, we got them from somebody else, but yes. Okay. Uh, you can't you can't do that without permit. Okay. And so >> you can you can feed them as long as like the CWD rules is you can place bait out for them and stuff around. You can't have them confined. Okay. >> Okay. >> Are they right over here? Can we go take a look at them real quick? >> And then if that's what that's fine. >> Yeah, we can do that. And they go run out anyway. >> Yeah. And so you can't I mean like I said, you can't you >> The only reason we kept them is because that one they they can't move. >> Okay. >> Cuz our intent was to raise her and let her go. >> Yeah. >> And see to do that you need a wildlife rehab permit. >> We were just going to get her big enough to leave. >> Well any I mean >> I understand what you're saying, but we weren't trying to be negative if you know what I'm saying. >> Yeah. right there. >> Oh, wow. Are they pretty tame? >> Oh, super tame. >> Super tame. And that's uh that's one of the reason we tell people not to intend on keeping them. >> Yeah. But they just You've had them about eight years. >> Yeah. This one we've had eight years. That one I think is six. >> Yeah. So you can see that they're in. >> We just intended on leaving her be. >> Yeah. >> And so uh yeah, like I like I said, you can keep them you can't keep them pinned. >> So we can just open the gate >> and let them You can't confine them in here without having a proper deer permit. >> So if we just left the gate open and let them come in and out, that's fine. >> Yeah. Okay. >> Now, uh you're going to get a ticket for confining wildlife without a permit. >> Um but I'm not I'm not like I'm not killing the deer. Okay. >> Just keep them coming and going. But don't confine them in here. Okay. >> Uh on as far as feeding wild >> What about just during hunting season? Would that be terrible? >> It's still confining. >> I think you you won't have to know that. >> Yeah. What? [laughter] >> Yeah. No, you can't. I mean, if I get a call again and they're coming out, then it'll go up to our confined wildlife team and >> No, I understand. >> And so, and I don't know what they would do. >> We won't keep them in. >> And so, as long as >> keep them in all the time anyway. The only reason they're in right now is cuz we're working >> working on the house. >> Yeah. >> And so, uh, but like I said, just keep them. The CWD rules is on the like the placing bait and stuff with the county. >> And so, you're within 100t of your house. So, you wanted to feed them out here. That's there's nothing that says you can't. You just cannot confine them up into this area. >> Okay. So, I'll say this. If you'll let me do this, I'll turn them out when we're not working tonight. >> Okay. That's fine. That's fine. >> Yep. >> We're going to run that um loader and stuff. So, I won't keep them up. >> Okay. And like I said, as long as you're not it's they can go freely go where they want, that's fine. Uh like our problem that I've seen is when they get big and they're used to people um we've seen it people trying to put collars on them and put tags on them. Absolutely. >> And then kids get around them when they don't feed them anymore and they get aggressive and then >> we had no intention of doing anything wrong. We just didn't want her to die. >> Yeah. >> And then some other people had him and he must be sterile cuz he never grows. >> Never grows. >> He never has a baby. So Um but they had him in a pin and they just said, "Can you take him?" So we did. Yeah. >> Just because of that because of her. But >> um yeah, we have no intention of breeding them or keeping them or if they could if she could have left, we would have let her go. I just don't think she'd make it. Yeah. >> She can't really run. She can't really jump. >> So yeah, I'm happy to turn them loose. Okay. Out here if you don't if that's all right with you. >> Yep. Uh do you have a driver's license with you? Is it >> Well, it's up there. >> Up there. Yeah. >> So, what's that? >> I I don't know. Uh it's not one of the like real expensive ones. >> Yeah. >> But the jud like I right to take it and the judge decides the fine. I don't >> Well, it's not like we're trying to farm here. >> Yeah. Exactly. >> Try not to let it die. >> I'll write that out real quick. Like I said, uh just let them out. Yeah, I'll do that. >> Don't pin them up when you're done with >> um issue citation. Do we have to go in >> for whatever? >> Oh, I'm giving you the citation here. It'll have a court date. I'll explain it all to you here in a second. Uh let's see. >> And there's not a way to permit these, man. >> No, since to get permission per to get a permit form, it can't come from a wild stock of the state. >> So, you have to buy stuff. Yeah. >> Yeah. We have no intention of raising deer. When that one was gone, we were done. We just didn't want her to die. >> Yeah. >> She was a tiny baby. The neighbor's dogs had her. We were just going to raise her long enough to let her go and then she can't run. >> Oh, yeah. >> Um but she's probably enough to stay around. I mean, we let them out now. >> Yeah. And like I said, uh, as long as you're not confined them in there, >> um, they kind of live longer than most >> deer do anyways. And so, uh, like I said, within 100 ft you can feed, uh, but you can't confine them up like stuff. >> And so, what I have here is, uh, citation for possessed wildlife in captivity without permit right here. Uh I assigned a court date of June 10th uh 2025. Okay. >> In Buffalo or in Dallas County. >> Yep. >> Uh I will give you a sheet and it'll explain. A lot of times they're going to let you take care of it. Uh you can show up to court or uh you pay for it through case. It's online. Uh stuff like that. It's your choice. But uh if you don't take care of it before June 10th and shut the court, don't shut the court and get a warrant. So, oh, so will it. >> And it'll pop up. I'll I got a sheet. I'll I'll get you. You want a sign there by that X that's just saying that everything's correct on there. >> There's your copy. Uh I wrote your court date. That's the stuff you look at. And you can look it up by name or case number something case number. >> Uh give it about expect to see it. >> Uh give it about two weeks. That gives me time. I'll submit my report. I'm just going to go right here. >> Uh, and you were cooperative with me. You didn't you didn't lie to me. So, that'll go that'll go in my report, but >> Well, I mean, we're not I'm not wrong. >> Yeah. Let's see. >> Any questions for me? Sorry. Stupid, but that's the way it goes. >> You think it's stupid, too. I understand [laughter] that out loud. >> It's part of it, man. Say that out loud, but I know what you're thinking, too. >> So, that's pointless. But >> yeah, >> I get it. >> But I I understand the welfare of deer. >> Yeah, >> the wild deer and I have >> and the main thing is keeping them and uh they have a of course you got to be like a doctor or vet to get it is the rehab permit. >> Uh but all that's up through Jeff City and that's mainly to rehab it enough and like >> just quick turn around time and stuff. [snorts] So >> yeah, >> cuz I don't think she'd make it in the in the wild. I mean, she'll probably make it around here. >> Yeah. Of course, like you said, eight or 6, 8 years. That's >> Yeah. >> Kind of past their time anyway, so [laughter] >> All right. >> That's all right. >> Sorry to come out. >> All right. Thanks, Tim. >> In the end, Tim was charged with possessing wildlife in captivity without a permit. He plead guilty and paid $167 in cost and fines.
