Officers with Florida Fish and Wildlife were on patrol when they contacted a vessel to conduct a resource inspection. Just you two? Just you two? Yeah. Well, I actually just got checked like not too long ago. They gave me something to show you guys. What's that? Just like they came recently. Who was it? Was it FWC? Yeah. I do have a question with like short fish that you do shoot. You said you spear fish. What do you do to >> Yeah, I don't shoot anything that's close. I'm not going to go down there and shoot a black grouper if I think it's close. I'm not going to shoot a red if I think I get it. I I don't do it too Yeah, I mean, it's uh it's a different game. I I really like being respectful of the ocean is definitely something I try to do. I'm not like going out here trying to hunt short fish. And so, it's happened. I know it's really unfortunate. Um Yeah, I I don't shoot unless I know. And I mean, if you do it enough, you get a pretty good eye. Yeah, I haven't done it enough to But, yeah, if it's especially like something like a grouper and like hogfish, too. I'm not shooting grouper or hogs unless I'm like super clear. >> so I don't really I don't want to cause any problems. It swam away, but Just with this short thing, I just Probably my fifth time ever spearfishing. Yeah, it's you can't. And then, definitely, if you ever do a resources inspection, and then you Somebody comes up on your boat says, "What do you have?" Be honest. Yeah, cuz I'm going to board your boat and look. Um >> Sure. But, yeah, spearfishing is going to be that way, but it's If you're going to take the responsibility or liability to kill an animal, >> Yes, sir. you should know if you can or not, you know? Um So. Give him a second. Um We'll uh Is there anything else I can do? No, you're you're We don't need anything else from you. If you want to collect your gear, I know it's fine hanging off the shaft back there, but if you want to, you can scoop that up. Um Is that the only group you saw today? Uh I saw one another short one uh after that I didn't shoot. No. Oh. No, I didn't. Are Are they holed up, or are they running reefs right now? Yeah. A bunch of porgies. The porgies are kind of everywhere right now, schooled up in the Yeah. Um the trigger fish were horrible, too. I got nicked a couple times. Oh, what can we do from here? I mean, I really All right, he's just finished typing up some stuff and then he'll let you know. Yeah. All right. With undersized fish though, just so you know, you we can't let you keep them. No, no. Um even the trigger. Yeah, we have to cuz cuz cuz if you get stopped again It's better that it happened than it didn't happen. Yeah, if you cuz if you get stopped with any of them they're going to do the same thing. All right. Um but Honestly, I'm glad this happened to Yeah, the way the way any fisheries violation works though is possession, all right? So even if like the spearing is you never want to waste stuff. Like I get it. I hate to if you take something's life, you at least want to be able to eat it, but you can't Yeah, I just the spearfishing man, I just say play it play it super safe. It makes it for me it makes it funner, too, cuz like I know I'm trying to go shoot a big fish. Um but yeah, just let them let them slide. I get especially like trigger fish are kind of hard to judge. Um and there's usually like you said, plenty. Yeah. But like mangroves and stuff, that's what I do like mangrove snapper I don't even if it's not a a stud, I usually don't even shoot them just cuz Yeah, this is probably like my fifth or really sixth time doing it, so 53 in trying to eye the fish down is something I got Yeah. Do you want me to go ahead and explain? Uh yeah, you can. I'm all I've got the personal property So he's giving you warnings for the trigger fish. You're getting a citation for the undersized grouper. Um pretty much you're going to have a property receipt saying that we're seizing it. We're taking the grouper. Um like I said, you can't have the trigger back either, but it's just a warning. Um there'll be a date for you in Broward County court to go and they set a fine pretty much. We don't set a fine on the water for you. Um you'll have a court date to go and take care of that. Um is there any other warnings or anything? Um Yeah, all your other stuff. Um but But yeah. So and just court usually sets it, but it's it's usually a couple hundred bucks. Um I can't obviously you go to court and fight it and do everything. I'm not legal counsel. So but all we all we do here is set a date. Um it's usually about 30 days from now, maybe plus or minus or plus a week or two. Um but it'll be Broward County. Um you'll if you need to reschedule or anything, like if you can't go, uh they have a phone number that you can call. Um you might even be able to set it up over Zoom if you want. Just don't wait till the day of to do it. But uh if you give this like a week or two and then call the number, the top of that's going to have a a citation number and you can give them that number and let them know hey, can I schedule this on Zoom? If you want to do it on the computer, most people would rather that. They might do it. I don't know what they're doing, but they were doing it over COVID and a little after. Well, they they'll set the fine. So yeah, they're they're going to Yeah, so you'll go and they'll they'll pretty much see hey, what what was it? It's for an undersized red grouper and then the judge will decide what to say. Um Sometimes it that doesn't even happen. So it Yeah, it's kind of luck of the draw for you, but um but usually it's nothing insane. Um But just so you know, giving you the warning on this fish cuz it would there it's the same kind of charge, like the the charge level. So it's cutting the price in half. If they if we'd have done both it would have been stacked. But yeah, he'll uh he'll have you sign that and then we'll go ahead break loose. You can still fish the rest of the day if you want. You can still do you know whatever whatever today. Yeah, just uh our only ask would be to shoot legal fish um cuz you might get stopped in the inlet by another officer later. I appreciate it though.
