hello I'm Jeff Trixie sheriff of Stanislaus County in this critical incident community briefing I'm here to talk about a hostage situation on July 17th that resulted in the use of deadly force by members of our SWAT team our deputies were investigating a report that 52 year-old Stephen Murray who already had a warrant for his arrest had kidnapped a woman and was holding her at gunpoint when our deputies arrived in the 700 block of South Jefferson in West Modesto they spotted mr. Murray with the alleged kidnap victim deputies followed mr. Maurya about a block to vine in South Madison when they contacted him mr. Murray placed the woman between himself and the deputies while holding what appeared to be a handgun the deputies fired their service weapons this is an evidence photo of what mr. Murray was holding which after the incident and upon closer examination was determined to be a replica firearm this detail was unknown to the victim the 9-1-1 caller in our deputies as they arrived on scene we will now show you body worn camera video and other relevant material in this incident a warning the videos you are about to see contain violent images and strong language viewer discretion is advised you [Applause] [Music] you [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] the investigations into this incident at the time of this video are still in their early stages Modesto police are investigating the deputy involved shooting as it occurred in their jurisdiction the Sante sauce County District Attorney's Office is also doing an investigation which is standard anytime there's a deputy involved shooting our office is also conducting an internal affairs investigation these investigations take time and who asked for your patience as we follow our procedures we share this video with you because we believe it is critical that our community has as much information as possible about these type of incidents thank you for watching this critical incident community briefing you
