On March 7th, 2024, police responded to a disturbing call from a mom who said her daughter had snuck into her house with a toddler, two random guests, and something far from babysitting vibes. What followed next included slurred words, mystery powders, and a mom who swore she was just tired, not high. So, grab your juice box and buckle up. This one's a wild ride through parenting gone way off script. >> Hey, S. It's Officer Roberts. >> Hey. >> So, this is what I got. I was dispatched down to for a complainant reporting that her daughter was in her house when she's not supposed to be with two uninvited guests and they were using signal 57 while her child was present. So, it's kind of like a child neglect investigation. >> Okay. >> Uh I was sitting a couple blocks away trying to call the complainant for more info and uh a vehicle drove past. At the same time, she was telling me it looks like they just left, which she observed through her cameras. The people in the car looked like they were trying to hide from me and then ran like went around a car, ran a red light. So I thought, "Okay, this must be them." Turn around on the vehicle, try and catch up to it, and they immediately go signal 12 once I get behind it with lights and siren. Uh, and they start going around cars, running red lights. So I stopped following. Uh, I just checked the area, make sure there are no signal fours up to Va Vista, turned around, came back to School Avenue to check the apartment. So, there's a chance the girl could and baby could be here at the apartment. >> Okay. >> Uh I haven't knocked on the door yet. I'm trying to get the complainant to come back up here. So, at the very least, we potentially have some kind of a child neglect investigation, the signal three and uh and potentially fleeing to elude, but it looked like a black male driver. No idea who he is or if the girl and the baby were even in the car. >> Give me an update. >> Yes, sir. Okay. What's going on this morning? I left this morning to go to the Salvation. I came back from the Salvation Army >> and we're getting housing. I just completed felony probation. >> Okay. >> I'm off of all that. >> Okay. >> There's nothing going on. >> Okay. What happened a few minutes ago with you guys when you pulled out of here? >> We pulled out of here. >> Yes, ma'am. >> And what car? There was two different cars. >> A white car. >> Yeah. Oh, that's that his name is um Lavaro. Lavar. >> Which car were you in? >> I was in the black twodoor. >> The black twodoor. >> The black Volkswagen. >> Okay. All right. Where's that car now? >> What car? >> The black Volkswagen. >> He just left. He just dropped me off. >> He just dropped you off. Okay. Who's this little guy? >> It's my son. >> Okay. What's his name? >> All right. All right. So, you were over here earlier collecting some property. >> Yeah. >> Okay. What's your last name? >> But I didn't I didn't break nothing illegal. I didn't do nothing wrong. My mom left me come here. I've been staying with her for the last two weeks. Me and the baby have been. >> And your first name is >> Chelsea. >> Let's see. And so, who were you over here with earlier? >> Who was driving the black car that you left with? >> That is um Oh my god. His name is Chim. No >> Ben. >> Ben. >> Ben who? >> Ben. Uh, Ben. I know where he stays that embrace him, but >> Okay. But you don't know him? >> No. But >> Okay. >> So, she was off probation and somehow still managed a crime drama worthy of Netflix. Two mystery cars, a black Volkswagen that disappeared like a magic trick, and a baby tossed into the chaos like an afterthought. Her day looked like a Netflix drama nobody asked for except the cops who got front row seats to the chaos. >> How long have you known Ben? >> A month. >> Okay. So, you've known him for 1 month and he drives a black two-door Volkswagen. >> Yeah, it's a Volkswagen. Uh like a four-door, but it's a a GT. >> Okay. >> Like it's a four-door. >> Okay. Uh who was driving the white car? >> Can you come back when my mom comes home? No, this is not something that can wait. We have to take care of this now. >> Okay. >> Okay. I'm 1012 with one of the subjects of this complaint. Can I second unit for assistance? 1074 106. >> More people. >> What's that? >> More people. >> I just need one more person because I can't talk to you. >> And did you hear my phone ringing? My phone's ring like three or four times since we've been standing here and I can't answer the phone and talk to you all at the same time. M >> All right. So, what did you do this morning? You said you went to Salvation Army. >> I left the Salvation Army and came home. >> Came home to get Aiden last night. Yes. >> Okay. >> And I stayed home with Aiden. I talked to Lavar. Um I talked to Ben. Ben said he come drive me. I didn't look at my phone to find the My >> Do you want me to try and call it? >> No, it's all right. >> Okay. >> So, I don't know. So, this is where we're going to be. I'm going to try to get in the house. >> Okay. But we're going to hold off on going inside for a little bit. >> It's too hot. My son's out here. Either that or I'm going to take him to a hotel room. >> I understand. >> It's too hot. >> Okay. So, you were over here with Lavar and Ben. Who? Who left with who? >> Lavar's girlfriend. Her name is I don't know. He's got a little girlfriend. They left together. >> Okay. In Lavar's white car. >> Yep. And then me and Ben and the baby left in Ben's car. >> Okay. When you guys left, did you follow Lavar? >> No, I didn't even see. Lavar left before we left. >> He left before you guys left. Okay, gotcha. >> Has Lavar called you or contacted you since he left? >> At the water club. >> Did he tell you what happened? >> No. >> Okay. All right. Do you have a phone number for Ben so I can talk to him, see what's going on? >> Yeah, when I find my phone. >> Okay. Do you mind if I check to see help you find your phone? >> No, I do mind if you check. >> Okay. >> I don't break any laws and um I have no >> Chelsea. >> Listen, I know my rights. Okay. I have no I have just got off of three PBLOs. I'll be damned if I'm allowed to officer myself. Do you mind? Of course I mind. >> All y'all have ever done is lock me and take me for my kids. I'll check my bags where you're not around. You want to wait for me right here? That's fine. >> Chelsea, >> what? >> How long has it been since you used >> I've been clean for over a week. I get tested three times a week by DCF. >> How long has it been since you >> Since I used over a week? >> It's been over a week. >> Yeah. >> She was acting like the queen of confusion, champion of vagueness, and graduate of the I know my rights kind of academy. Couldn't name Ben, Lavar, or the mystery girlfriend without sounding like she was drawing names out of a bingo cage. while the baby sat in the front row of this circus like it was Saturday morning cartoons. >> Okay, >> you stick out your tongue. You do. >> I just ate ice cream. >> Can you open up your mouth? Stick to your tongue. Okay. >> All right. >> I'm not using >> Chelsea. >> DCF is your speech is slurred. You don't stay on your feet. You have pot marks on your tongue. You have several indicators that are consistent with somebody who's recently used. >> How long has it been since you used something? >> I told you Saturday of last week. >> Saturday of last week. What else do we need? >> I'm going to wait for my other officer to get here. I'm going to make some phone calls and then we're going to figure it out. >> 9 to 8. We're on the back side of the apartment. >> Did you have a phone number for Ben while you've got your phone out? >> Okay. >> Hey, >> she is I think the medical term is high as >> right now. I'm going to try and get her mom's down in Venice. I'm going to try and get her to come up here. She's either going to jail or she's going to the hospital. I haven't decided which yet, but we're going to have to have somebody to take care of. His name's Aiden. >> All right. >> He seems okay now, but it's it's starting to get pretty hot out here. >> I'm going to make a phone call. If she gives you any problems at all, give me a shout and come back. We'll put her in cuffs. >> Okay, sounds good. >> Hello, this is Travis. >> Hey, Travis. It's officer Roberts. Sorry, Mr. Call. >> Yes, sir. Um, my wife called me. I guess there's some situation with her sister. Do you need me to come there? I'm 15 minutes away. No. So I think so Chelsea came back. So we're speaking to her now. So I don't think I need you to come here anymore. But her mom, we're going to have to figure out something. I think Casey's mom is going to call Casey and see if she can come. >> Okay. And he didn't get injured in the accident. >> No. So at this point, it's kind of uncertain whether they were even in that car at the time, which is good. >> Yeah. Well, I mean, yeah, it's good for him. I really She just needs to be whatever. Never mind. Uh, okay. Well, I'm going to be there anyways in 15 minutes. I just don't want Casey to have to deal with all this. So, I'm going to I'll just talk to you here in 15 minutes. If we need to take him with us or whatever that looks like, we'll figure that out. >> Oh, okay. Perfect. Then I'll see you guys soon. >> Yeah. Yeah. All right. >> All right. Bye. >> Hey, S. I just wanted to give you an update real quick. Y >> So, Chelsea returned to the apartment with the infant. So, there's no injuries and she says that they left with a different person in a different vehicle and were not involved in the crash. >> Okay. >> She is high as a kite. >> How did she know there was a crash? Did you tell her? >> No. >> No. >> No. Uh, but she is high as a kite right now. Uh, >> well, what I'm saying is that she says she wasn't involved in a crash without us letting her know there's a crash and obviously she was involved in a crash. Well, so I haven't brought up the crash yet, but she said she left with a guy named Ben in a black Volkswagen and her friend Lavar uh left in a white Ford sedan, >> right? >> Uh separately from her. She says she has no idea. >> She was the walking proof that denial is a lifestyle choice. She claimed it had been a week since she used, but her tongue was throwing rave signals and her legs were doing interpretive dance. Meanwhile, her buddy, the one who peeled off with his little girlfriend like they were in Fast and Delusional, crashed the car. Lucky for her and the baby, they weren't in that car. >> What happened with the white Ford cuz he left the house before they did. >> Yeah. >> But I haven't questioned her specifically about a crash. But nobody's injured. Aiden seems fine. Uh but like I said, she's high as a kite, so she's more than likely going to be 10:15 for child neglect as soon as we get a caregiver here. >> Okay. >> Hey, Chelsea, is that Lavar's car? Yes. >> Okay. >> So, signal 12 vehicles was involved with this. >> Yes. >> Well, have you talked to Lavar? Do you know what happened to him in his car? >> Okay. Well, if you weren't there, then that's Lavar's business. I'm not going to get into it with you. And it's not anything personal. It's just I don't want to air his business out. If I thought maybe he'd talk to you about it. Were you able to find a phone number for Ben? Do you have a picture of him on your phone? Can you have fire in route for a 33-year-old white female conscious and breathing? She's impaired on her and she's in and out of consciousness. >> Yes. >> I'm not in and out of consciousness. I'm tired. >> Take a nap this time. It's time to go in. >> I don't want an ambulance to come here. >> I'm going to tell my mom. Y'all can go. >> Okay. Well, I'm going to get a Uber and I'm going to go. >> Okay. All right. Chelsea, put your hands behind your back. I'm going to jail. >> What did I do? You got to call my mom to come get the baby. >> Stand up for me. Just >> What did I do? >> What did I do? Hello? >> I didn't do anything. Are you serious right now? >> My son. You can't leave my son here. My mom has to come and get him. Please. >> We're not leaving him here by himself. >> But why am I going to jail? >> You got her. I'd like to stay with her. >> I can't search her, though. Do you want to switch? >> Yeah, we'll switch. >> My car's right here. >> Yeah. >> And >> what am I going to do >> here? Can you start it up and turn the AC on, too? >> What are you doing, >> Chelsea? I'm going to come explain to you in just a minute. >> I didn't do anything, though. >> Come on, man. >> Stand right here. Behind the car. >> That's crazy. >> Do you have anything sharp on you that's going to poke me? anybody. >> Well, my guess is is that you're under some sort of right and you have that's your son, correct? >> Yeah, I'm not on under sleeping medicine. I take methadone every morning. I have a open DCF case. They come and test me. >> So, I'm going to go to jail for that. >> I'm not sure. You're going to have to speak with the other officer, the investigating officer. Okay. He'll explain it to you. >> Oh, those are all tobacco roaches. >> What's in it? Marijuana? >> No, no marijuana. >> They're just >> tobacco. Okay. >> I've done everything I can to complete probation. Like, what's going on now? >> Why are you guys still looking? >> Nothing. >> I'm not sure right now. >> When the officer pulled drugs from her pocket, she hit him with the just tobacco roaches. Even the car got more AC than that excuse. And when the cuffs came out, Chelsea looked shocked again. But let's be real. If your first excuse is, "I'm just tired." And your second is, "It's just tobacco," you probably are doing something wrong, especially around a child. >> What's going on with you now? >> Nothing. I'm doing good. >> Promise you. It's okay. I'm just not doing anything. >> You don't have anything in your bra? >> No. No. They're going to search for me when I get to the jail and everything. Yeah, but the problem is if you have something on you, it's another charge. >> I know. I know. >> But I just want to make sure >> I'm not going to go to jail, right? >> Yes. He said you're going to jail. >> Jail for what? He'll explain it to you once he once he comes back. Come on. >> 10 is going to be >> He'll be able to tell you more about it. >> Can you give my phone? Yep. Everything's fine. I can No. So I can start calling my bond. Can't call right now. Once you get booked in the jail, you'll be able to call. >> It's going to take a long You're going to turn the car on? >> Yep. I'm I'm turn it on right now. Hang on. >> Are you Travis? >> Pass 2904 Romeo Hotel. >> Are you guys able to get inside and get him in the air conditioning? >> So, so my I'll put him in my truck for a minute. Okay. >> Um my wife's on her way here. She's going to have some stuff. >> Okay, cool. >> Mind if I go start my truck? >> Yeah, absolutely. Man, he seems pretty chill, but it's he's got to be getting hot. >> I know. We're going to get you in some air conditioning, buddy. >> Is this a bag you need to check? >> That's all diaper stuff. I've already looked at it. >> So, I just want to make sure like whatever like I get sick and tired of everybody trying to cut her deals like like throw the freaking book at her and send her away, please. Okay. >> She needs it badly. >> Yeah. Uh, look, I try a couple of breaks when I can. Uh, but when I'm I'm looking at her high as a kite, can't take care of >> something cuz right not alcohol, right? Okay. >> No, it's I don't smell any alcohol. >> Well, the kid's the victim. Uh, so I'm not going to I'm not going to pull any punches on this. Well, the issue is that I I I'm well I'm well known in the area and I have a lot of businesses and so it's always been put on I >> when you meet my wife her her it's her halfsister. It's very different. >> Um and so the problem is is that she's it's very hard to find a program that take uh kids. >> Mhm. >> So she wanted to put that on Kelly, my mother-in-law. Um but the problem is she has a full-time job and I'm not going to I I don't need another kid in my life. I've got four of my own. We also are the guardian of another kid uh whose parents died. Like I not I don't need like so we >> whatever. So I'm trying to handle that delicately over the last year. >> Um but in this situation I just I I like whatever you found please don't cut her grass. >> Yes. Deal. >> Okay. >> Deal. It was already going to happen anyway. >> Uh I can't do it when there's a little kid involved. So basically uh she got checked out by rescue so she's not going to overdose. So once Casey gets here, I'll just I'll get her information. Make sure that Aiden's going to be okay. I'm >> She treated jail like a surprise party she didn't RSVP for. Every 5 seconds. What did I do? Ma'am, at this point, even the baby knows the diaper bag had its life more together than she did. Meanwhile, her brother-in-law, he practically begged the cop to stop giving her chances. Like he'd rather wrestle a raccoon than take on one more ounce of her chaos. >> I got to give DCF a call and let him know. Do you want me to give her information to you and then she you can just >> Well, I I can't leave until a family >> I understand that she she'll check in. I'm just saying it'll save you some time so that when you just verify it's her, look at her ID or however you do that. >> Well, what's your last name, Travis? >> Hi. >> What's up? >> You and I both know that's not true. Listen, it's true. >> You and I both know that's not true. So, who I told you that's been with you for some time now. He'll be here in a second. He'll explain it to you. Okay. He's going to explain everything to you. All right. But your brother-in-law is here. Okay. Yeah, he has a baby. All right. >> It's me. So, how does this work? >> Well, we found some in your bag. >> What? >> What are those? >> What? >> I don't know. We're going to have to test them unless you know what it is. >> I don't know. I don't know what he collected from your bag. >> Oh my gosh. So, >> what was in your bag? >> There was something else and a powdery substance which would have been >> Yeah, but I don't want to go for that. >> So, why are you carrying that stuff and why are you doing it? >> I'm not doing it. >> So, why do you have it? because they left it in the bag when I got dropped off. >> But it's in your possession. I understand that >> you already know how that works. >> I know. You're going to have to talk to the judge. >> But you're saying the powder substance. >> So, I would not open that or go through it. just stuck it in a stick it in a corner and give it back to her when >> did you take >> like parapini out of it or >> everything that I found that you are not allowed to have I took out. Okay. >> Uh but one of the things was uh an opened plastic bag with some kind of powder that looks like a little bit of it spilled onto a shirt. >> So yeah, I'm not I can't collect a little bit of loose powder, but it is spilled on that shirt in there. >> My eyes so >> it's up to you in my trunk. Yeah, she just said she just wanted the cell phones out of there. >> Okay, >> Chelsea, look. So, you got a ton of stuff in your backpack and I got to sort through it and figure out what it is, okay? And I need your help to do that. Since you're under arrest, though, I'm going to read you your rights under Miranda. >> Okay. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in court. Do you understand each of Chelsea? >> I'm listening. >> Oh, I'm sorry. Do you understand each of these rights I explain to you? Okay. And having those rights in mind, are you willing to answer a couple questions about these things? All right. I know you already told the officer that you had, but look, I'm not a expert and it's going to help me out. Chelsea played the I'm innocent card like it was a magic trick, except the only thing that disappeared was her credibility. Meanwhile, officers found a plastic bag in her backpack with a powdery substance, enough to raise eyebrows and possibly charges. Some had even spilled onto a shirt just casually hanging out like it belonged there. >> This was in your like leopard skin purse. It kind of they kind of seem like pills that are mashed up. >> I got I got to see closer out. >> Those with They look blue to me. >> No, they're white. I think they're white. >> But I am a little bit color blind. They're white. with their white. They're just um but they're alone. >> Okay. And what the heck are these things? >> Oh, my ear plugs. >> Earplugs. >> Yes. >> What about these? >> These are my >> And then this was out in your backpack. [Music] >> There is. There's powder in it. >> Well, what was in it? >> I'm guessing it was all that. Okay. >> You're going to be charged with this. Uh you're going to be charged with child neglect. You can't be impaired while you're in the care of an infant. That's not safe. All right. In the end, Chelsea's leopard print purse had more drama than a reality TV reunion. Crushed pills, a powdery bag, and pills she so confidently called earplugs. Officers finally hit her with child neglect charges. Because when your purse is more suspicious than your alibi, it's time for some handcuffs and the hard truth. She was possibly charged with child neglect, possession of a controlled substance, and possession of drug paraphernalia. If she lied to officers, obstruction, or false information could also apply.
