Most people leave a baby shower with a party favor or a slice of cake, [music] but Kayla decided to leave with a one-way ticket to a police investigation. On February 2nd, [music] 2025, Kayla Tui fam found herself parked in a turning lane on the completely wrong side of the road, [music] looking like a deer in headlights, or rather a bartender in the wrong headlights. It turns out that following a baby shower with a few drinks is [music] a recipe for a very awkward roadside reunion with the Port Orange Police Department. You were you you were sitting in the a turning lane that was on the opposite side of the street that you shouldn't even have been on. >> I just I don't know my way around here. >> Okay. Well, you smell like alcohol. >> I went from a baby shower. I'm sorry. >> So, you have been drinking? >> Not really. No. Like, no, I didn't. I'm I'm sorry. I just don't know my way around. I was following the GPS and it drove over the wrong way and I was following my boyfriend and I was coming home. >> Okay. And so do you not know how to follow proper like lanes and stuff? >> Well, they told me to turn left and I thought that's where I was supposed to turn left and so I'm starting. >> Where are you trying to go? >> Is that way? >> Yeah. I was calling you to pass and it said to break your return. >> All right. What's your uh give me your license registration insurance? >> Where's your Is this your insurance? >> Um she I don't I don't my insurance on my car. >> All right. Give me one second. Can you send me a second? >> My insurance is on my phone. >> Okay, that's fine. Can you turn your car off, please? And can you hand me the keys? Huh? >> I don't know. Can you just My insurance is on my phone, but my safe phone doesn't work and you know that. >> Yeah, you just show me on your phone. It's fine. [clears throat] >> I have it, but it's like not playing. You saw a turn, please. >> Kayla really tried to blame her lack of road basic skills on a GPS that apparently moonlighted as a bartender. Did the GPS tell her to take three shots and turn left, [music] or was that just her own festive intuition? It was clear she was really fantastic at faking sobriety, even if her car was pointed head-on at oncoming traffic. The [music] I'm not from here excuse is about to get a breathalyzer response. >> The GPS The GPS told me to turn left and I turned left and it was on the wrong side of the road and then I face it and I fixed it and I'm not from here. I don't notice broken here. I don't I'm sorry. I wish you guys All right, ma'am. Um, when my partner gets here, are you willing to do field sobriety exercises? >> No, ma'am. >> You're refusing? >> Okay. Will you do a breath test? >> Okay. All right. >> I know. Ask him. >> I don't I don't care who you know. I really don't. You can have someone come here, but they're not coming to pick you up. So, cuz you're driving and you are under the influence. >> I'm not. >> You already told me that you were. >> No, I'm not. >> Okay. Well, that it's besides the point at this point. >> If I leave my car here and I have somebody >> ma'am, it's we are past. >> It was my GPS. My GPS told me to make it. >> Okay. But we are past that at this point in time. We are past it. Okay. So you can have whoever you can come come here, but it's going to be very pointless because you're you already said that you didn't want to blow or anything like that. So I have to read you some stuff and then we're going to go from there because I refused to do all the testing separate because my GPS told me to make a U-turn there and I made a U-turn there cuz it told me to make a my GPS told me to make a U-turn there. where you were sitting, ma'am, was no way that you could have possibly made a Uturn the way you were sitting. You were sitting in a turning lane. >> The officer mentioned she smelled like a brewery, and Kayla's best defense was that she wasn't really drinking. She kept repeating that she was just following her boyfriend, who apparently also forgot how lanes work. [music] It's amazing how she thought being lost was a valid legal defense for driving under the influence. Up next, the [music] officer decides it's time for some roadside gymnastics. >> Yeah, I'm not from here, so I don't know. I just want >> I understand that, ma'am, but when I asked you, "Have you been drinking?" Because I smell the odor of alcohol on your breath and I can smell it from standing all the way over here. You told me that you were drinking and that you just came from the baby shower. >> I wasn't drinking. No, I said I came from a baby shower, but I wasn't drinking. >> But I can't neglect the fact that you said that. Well, you smell like alcohol. >> I went to have a baby shower. I'm sorry. >> So, you have been drinking. >> Not really. No. >> Can you get out of the car, please, ma'am, and hang up the phone? >> I'm not hanging up the phone. >> Well, you need to sit the phone down because you're just going to make it worse for yourself. So, sit the phone down. >> Well, babe, really, >> I am not trying to be disrespectful. Sit the phone down. I I am not putting you under arrest at this time. I told you I have to read you something, but you're not listening at all. >> I'm sorry. I'm just upset. Sorry. >> All right. You come to the back of the vehicle. >> Can you just watch her? >> Okay. >> Stand here. Stand here. All right. I'm Officer Lightoot with the Port Orange Police Department. The time is 7:13 p.m. Miss, what's your name? Okay, I have your last names here. It's fine. >> I don't I don't want to be on here. >> Yeah, it's all under you. >> Miss, is that how you say your last name? Okay. I am conducting a criminal investigation. Your voice and actions will be recorded for our court presentation by Officer Lewis. Do you understand? Is that a yes or a no? Is that a verbal yes or a no? >> Yeah. >> All right. Please say your name, address, and your height and weight. >> Sorry about 98 lb. >> All right. >> She was clearly obstructing the search for the truth. [music] Likely because she knew those exercises would look more like an interpretive dance than a walk. The officer was trying to be patient, but Kayla was too busy acting like a spoiled [music] toddler. It's a bold move to refuse every test while literally smelling like a open bottle of wine. All >> right. What's your eye color, your age, and your birthday? >> I'm 6 years old. >> Eyes are brown. My hair is brown. >> Do you have any problems with your back, legs, or balance? >> Problems with my back. So, yeah. >> Okay. Are you currently being treated by a doctor for this condition? All right. I am going to demonstrate some field sobriety exercises and then ask you to perform the exercise. I can I read this please? >> Yes. >> I am going to demonstrate some field sobriety exercises and then ask you to perform the exercise the same way I demonstrate them to you. Do not begin or attempt the exercise until I begin tell you to begin. part of my demonstration of whether you are uh intoxicated or not or is not in your ability to follow your instructions. Do you understand? >> Yeah. >> Will you attempt these exercises? >> Okay. You don't want to do any of the exercises? >> No, thank you. >> Okay. Um, I am now requesting that you submit to a lawful breath test for the purpose of determining your alcohol content. Will you take the test? >> Okay. >> Um, if you refuse to take the test, I have requested of you your driving privilege will be suspended for a period of 1 year for a first refusal or 18 months if your driving privilege has been previously suspended. Do you understand what I have just read to you? >> Yeah. >> No or yes? >> Yes. >> Okay. Will you still Are you still refusing? >> Yes. >> She kept interrupting the officer, proving that her mouth was working much faster than her [music] brain. At that point, it was honestly a struggle to watch the officer try to read the law. It felt like the officer's first day dealing with a toddler in a 26-year-old's body. All right. All right. Now, I'm going to read to you the Miranda warnings. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say may be used against you. You have the right to talk. Can you turn around and listen, please? >> I know. I know the warnings. >> She says to read it. >> I know. I know. Everything I have can be used against you in the court of law. >> Can I read, please? >> Yes, you can. >> You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say may be used against you. >> Do you understand these rights? >> Yes. Can I please let my >> With these rights in mind, are you willing to talk to me? >> Yes, I am. But can I just please let my boyfriend know that like you are arresting me and like where he can find me, please? >> I will let him I will let you use the phone whenever you start to cooperate. I am trying to do something right now and you just continue to keep trying to act. >> Listen, when we finish up right here, I'll grab the phone and you can tell. >> Okay, >> you can. >> You can stop it. Yeah. Let me hold that. >> Yep. >> All right. Go ahead and put your hands behind your back. At this point, with everything that I have already noticed with you and your driving patterns, I smelled the alcohol of uh odor of alcohol on your breast. You already told me that you were coming from a baby shower and you were drinking. >> Well, you are now under the arrest for DUI, driving under the influence. So for 25 central female just saying let me get you in the car. Okay. >> I guess you can't know where I'm at. >> I'm sorry. I just >> fine. It's fine. I I'm not trying to be rude. I'm not trying to be a [ __ ] to you. I'm just >> I'm sorry. >> Can you spread your feet, please? >> No. >> All right. So, can you tell me how much you drank today, please? And be honest. >> No, >> you do not. But you were in fact drinking alcohol cuz you told me when I walked up to the door. >> A little bit. I was in Cleveland. >> Okay. >> Kayla's attitude suddenly shifted from defiant [music] to desperate. The officer was being incredibly polite, almost too nice, [music] considering she was literally a hazard to everyone on the road. It's funny how people suddenly find their manners when they realize the police car doesn't have a return to sender button. The tow truck is about to enter the chat. >> I for you. I don't There's nothing on me. >> I understand that, ma'am. I just I still just have to check you. I'm not doing anything that I wouldn't do to anybody else that was under arrest. I apologize. >> I apologize again. I didn't mean to. >> I understand the circumstances of being arrested and, you know, getting pulled over probably isn't an easy thing if you never got in trouble before. That's why I was not trying to be rude to you. >> Yes, I get that and I apologize. >> I will we'll get your phone and I'm just already let you know that your car has to be towed because um that is our policy when you get in trouble for DUI. Uh we will do um an inventory of the car. Do you need anything outside of the car outside of your phone? >> Um I have my curator. I have my >> my license, my registration. I have my um I have so my cream. I have your license. >> Is there Is there anything like >> No. Do >> you have a wallet in there or something? >> My purse has I don't have a wallet. I'm a bartender. So, all my cash is in there. My ID's in there. >> Okay. We'll take all your money and everything out. >> And um also I have I have most of my eggs and my creams in there. >> Yeah. They can't go with you unfortunately. >> Yeah. They're going to just throw it away. So, that's what we're trying to prevent. >> It's just a purse. Just the purse and my phone. >> Okay. They'll throw the purse away. So, can we just get your wallet and your money? And >> if you can just >> We don't want them to discard any of your stuff. >> Okay. So, like if if I leave if I leave my purse in my car, that's fine. >> Yeah. All right. Well, I'm going to get your phone so my boyfriend. >> She was terrified her purse would be discarded, showing she had more concern for her accessories than the fact she almost caused a head-on collision. The officers had to explain basic impound policy like they were talking to a confused [music] tourist. It's hard to feel bad for someone who refuses to cooperate but then expects the police to be their personal moving service. >> No, this is her. I think that's her boyfriend calling right now. Can you just please? >> Hey, this is officer Louis Port Orange. So, she's being arrested for for DUI tonight. So, the arresting officer decided to do field exercises and he denied doing that. Yeah. So that So that's an automatic refusal. Um, so if our vehicle is going to be towed? >> No, the car is going to get towed. >> I don't know. Her boyfriend. No, the car is going to get towed. Yeah, because it's part of our policy. >> Why are you in >> to do an inventory? >> Okay, sir. But you're not going to come over here and tell us how to do our job. I understand. >> She was in the southbound lane going northbound. >> She's not from here. She has nowhere to go. >> I understand now, sir. But she still should know how to follow proper turning lanes and stuff. She wasn't the way she was turning. I will give you a better understanding. She was in the turning lane facing her literally people coming on head on. That's not okay. >> And what do you charge her with? >> DUI refusal. >> No, you're fine. I wouldn't doubt that you weren't a very nice person. I just like I said, I understand that, you know, people get upset on stuff like that, so I wasn't trying to make your life hard. Give me one second. Yeah. You're not You're not going to be in prison or anything like that. Like, I wouldn't worry about that. No, no, no, no, no, no, no. You're not going to prison. You will not be going to prison. No, it's okay. I accept your apology, but it's it's okay. At the end of the night, Kayla learned that the road isn't a choose your own adventure book. [music] She spent the entire encounter trying to talk her way out of a hole she dug with her own drinking habits and poor choices. [music] Between the GPS excuses and the refusal to blow into the tube, she made her own bed in the back of that patrol [music] car. It's a miracle no one was hurt given her drunk state. Kayla Tui Fam, 27, [music] was initially hit with DUI and driving on the wrong side of the road after her head-on stunt. [music] In July 2025, she took a plea deal, pleading no contest to reckless [music] driving, which saw the DUI charge reduced. While adjudication was withheld, the judge didn't let her off easy. [music] She was slapped with 6 months of probation, mandatory community service, and DUI school. >> [music] >> She also had to cough up $65 in fines, though the wrongside driving charge was officially dismissed.
