So 3 months ago you talked to him and she said you're fine and come in here and do your thing. >> Yeah. I mean and they haven't even been back. >> Put the bag down. >> Right now he's being detained. Okay. >> You okay? >> The key was right. >> Look, he lives right there. He's outside the whole time. >> Yeah, that's who called. Stop [music] yelling at me. >> On May 27th, 2025, a strange incident took place. >> [music] >> A suspicious neighbor noticed the lights were on in a house where the owners were supposed to be out of town. It was 10:30 [music] at night, and since the elderly woman and her son weren't home, seeing activity was a major red flag. When the police [music] arrived, they caught a lady named Laura slipping out of the garage. She was about to give the performance of her life. >> Excuse me, ma'am. >> Wer PD. >> Yes, ma'am. We got a call that uh nobody was supposed to be here at this house. >> Really? >> Yes, ma'am. >> And who was that girl from? >> Uh one of the neighbors. >> They should be here all the day. >> Yes, ma'am. Can I ask uh Can I ask your name? >> Sure. It's Laura. >> Laura? >> Yeah. >> I got you. What's your last name? >> King. I'm sorry. Is Laura what? >> King. >> King. You said you come here all the time. >> Yeah. I mean, they've been gone for a while. >> Yes, ma'am. >> And I was helping to like pack their stuff up and stuff like that. >> Okay. So, is that what you were doing in here now? You were just helping them pack their stuff up? >> Been in here probably like maybe two hours. >> Two hours. Okay. Do you know the homeowner's name? >> Um, it is Ruth. Ruth. What? >> I can't remember the last name. I think her I think it's Martha and they call her Ruth. I call her. >> Her name is Martha and you call her Ruth. >> Okay. Okay. So, you were just in there packing up today? >> Yep. >> I got you. So, if I give the homeowner a call, she'll know that you're here. >> Yeah. >> I got you. Do you have her phone number where you can contact her? Like, I don't. >> So, you haven't been in contact with her? No, I mean we she had left a note and uh I come over and I look for the key. She was really here and so I got the key in starting. >> You got an ID on you? >> I do. >> Okay. Go talk to I got you. I'll give grab ID for you and everything. Cool. She walked out of that garage like she owned the mortgage. [music] But her story was shakier than a leaf in a storm. She claimed she spent two hours packing for a homeowner named Ruth. Yet, she couldn't even recall the poor woman's last name. It [music] was quite pathetic how she fumbled the details while trying to look helpful. Honestly, some people have no shame when caught red-handed. Wait, >> when when did you last talk to the homeowner? >> Oh, Lord, maybe 3 months ago. >> 3 months, maybe. 3 months ago. >> So So 3 months ago you talked to them and she said, "You're fine to come in here and do your thing." >> Yeah. I mean, and they haven't even been back. >> Well, that doesn't make sense. Where Where was the key at? >> Right there. >> How did you know the key was there? >> Because they told me. >> But was it 3 months ago? >> I mean, I had come over here said cleaning stuff. >> Is there anybody else in the house right now? >> No. >> All right. Want to double check? We can, but we need a unit. >> I'm going go and put your stuff down for me. >> Yes. Put it back down. >> Right now, you're just being detained. Okay. >> Okay. >> Just based on everything. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. Go put the stuff down for me. >> Yeah. Here. >> Put the bag down. >> Right now, he's being detained. Okay. >> Okay. >> Just based on everything. Yeah. >> The key is right there. >> The key was right there. >> Can we get someone come on Mass Street, please? >> Where's your ID at? >> It's in that. >> It's in this little wallet. Can I can I look in your wallet and get your ID? >> Okay. >> You got anything else going and hurt me? >> The knife. >> I was coming right back >> right now. Right now you're entertained. The math just wasn't mathing for Laura as she claimed the homeowners told her where the key was 3 months ago. [music] While she stood there being detained, she kept insisting she was just doing a favor. It's funny how favors usually involve breaking into a dark house in the middle of the night. Things were about to get much louder. >> Have him call the neighbor or the owner right now confirming that no one's supposed to be in there. >> He doesn't have his phone on him right now. >> Do you have number? >> It'd be different if I wasn't trying to lock up. So, so well basically you haven't talked to the homeowner. Never mind. Just don't say nothing about right now. We'll read you some things. If you want to talk to us then you can talk to us. Based on what everything you just told me makes no sense. >> This [ __ ] He sat here and washed me. >> Who? >> He did. Look, he lives right there. He's outside the whole time. >> Yeah, that's who called. Stop yelling at me. >> That's soed up. >> That'sed up that a neighbor's watching another neighbor's house. No, but why would you sit there? >> No more talking. Zip it. >> Why would you sit there and and watch this? >> I sat here. >> Stop. Just stop. >> They say out there to talk for hours. >> So, we we just got her coming out. I saw I briefly saw a shadow. I don't know if she's with anybody or not. >> I mean, I just play. >> Yes, if you don't mind. Come on. >> Well, I know it's very I >> got I got her the hoodie and stuff. >> I got you. >> She had jewelry and stuff in her pocket. >> All right. >> She actually got mad at the neighbor for watching the house. It's hilarious that she felt entitled to privacy while allegedly raiding a stranger's bedroom. She wanted the neighbor to just mind his business while she stuffed her pockets. >> [music] >> The officers were seconds away from getting the real owner on the line. >> This is him on the phone right now. >> Okay. >> Hey Bobby. >> Yeah. >> That you on speaker so you can talk to us. >> That's your caller. >> You want to say ask me? >> Hey, this officer Dutch Wer Police Department. >> So who's the what's the name of the homeowner here? >> Martha is the homeowner. He's my mother. >> Martha. I got you. Are you the one who normally looks after this place? >> Yeah, we've been trying to get it cleaned up so we could sell it. I had to move her up here cuz her health got so bad. I'm in Del Longa. >> I got you. Um, do you know is there anybody else that's supposed to be in this house at all other than you know you? >> No, sir. Me and my mama. That's it. >> Me? >> And yeah, of course. Of course, our neighbor over there. He's a good fell. >> Okay. Sir, you didn't give anyone permission to come in at all? >> No, sir. Do y'all have like jewelry and watches and stuff inside? >> Uh, she had some fake jewelry and some different stuff inside. Yeah, she had lot a lot of different jewelry in the back bedrooms. We'd clean most of the other stuff out, but she did have a little bit of stuff left. >> Is there anything else of value in the house that uh, you know, we we need to be on the lookout for? >> No, not that I know. We we had cleaned, like I said, we'd cleaned most of it out. There was just some minor stuff in there. Nothing major. >> What did she say? She got in. >> Um, so it looks like they she broke the one of the glass or the little plastic frames. Uh, and just reached her hand in and unlocked it. >> You are around by this right here. Right here. Yes, sir. >> I just want to confirm you do want to press charges on her. >> Yes. >> Okay. Awesome. YPD, if you're here, make yourself known. >> Hearing the house owner confirm he wanted to press charges [music] was the reality check Laura desperately needed. She was sitting there listening to her cover story crumble in real time. Now the police just had to figure out how she actually got inside the building. >> We'll get the rest of the story. >> This is the ladies. It was on the floor in my patrol car. She said it was it belongs to the lady. She just had it in her pocket because she missed it and was thinking I read her her Miranda rights and she agreed to talk. >> Cool. Appreciate it. >> I mean, if I was trying to steal stuff, I would They load my >> Do you have any personal belongings inside there? >> No, just my purse that I'm pulling out. >> Just your purse. The jewelry that's on your wrist or anything. Is that yours and not yours? You don't have anything? >> No. >> I mean, you didn't pat me down, did you? >> Well, I did that already. We'll check some rings appearing. >> Well, how did you >> Yeah. What about all those rings in your pocket? Who Who threw those? I was wiping down in the kitchen or I was clearing away in the kitchen. >> Okay. >> And then just stuff them there. Finish what I was doing. Um I would put stuff in the room. >> What room? >> Like their room. >> Okay. >> Um >> and who's they can Who's the homeowners again? >> What What's the male's name? >> I don't I can't remember his name. Her name is I believe it's Sue. >> Okay. Cuz you told us Go ahead. >> They I think I'm I call her Sue. >> What about Martha that you told us originally? And then there's another name. >> I think that her uh full name is Martha. >> Cuz there's three different names you told me so far. What's What's her husband's name? >> I don't know her husband. I was just talking to her. >> Just talking to her? >> Yeah. Several months ago. >> Yeah. Three months ago, right? >> A while back. >> Okay. So, what made you randomly out of the blue since you haven't talked to him in 3 months show up to the house? >> I've been coming over here sitting. >> You have been? >> Yes. Um, you know, he he saved me. He did. >> Hey. Hey. I know. I know. He saw He didn't see you at all. He saw the lights on in the house. >> How'd you get in the house? >> The key. >> Where's the key at? >> It was up under the thing. I I showed you. >> Mhm. There's no key there. >> Where's the key now? >> You took the key? >> I didn't take the key. >> All right. >> I'll go double check, but >> Laura's packing strategy apparently involved shoving rings and jewelry into her own pockets. She claimed she was wiping down the kitchen and decided [music] to store valuables in her pants for safekeeping. It was a bold strategy, but unfortunately for her, the cops weren't buying the accidental pocketing excuse. [music] She was really struggling to keep her lies straight as the search continued. >> Y'all, y'all, you don't like >> Did you say she has more stuff in her? >> She had more rings or jewelry? >> Yeah, she over there on the counter. She had >> right here. Right here. >> What What color was the key? Was it gold? Was it silver? I want to say it was silver with uh it had like a a key on it. >> What what did it have like a was it like a >> it's like a long silver key >> and was that in your pocket you said? >> Yes, that was okay. >> And then there was there was a watch or something I think you had. >> Yeah, there's a watch in there. Yeah, there's no I'll go double check, but there ain't no key there. So So it's been 3 months since you physically or you've talked to the homeowners? You said several months. Okay. So, several months. >> Wow. >> So, you've been coming back and forth, you said, right? >> Yes. >> Was there any damage to any part of the house? Was there any damage to any part of the door that you recognized? Was there anything that was out of the ordinary that may have been you thought that was Well, that's weird. That wasn't there before since you've been coming around here so so often. >> Uh, not to my knowledge. Um, I mean, everything looks pretty much the same. >> Okay. Um, and I would come and sit and wait to see if somebody would, you know, come home. >> Why would you do that? >> To talk to her, to to come on in the house and and finish cleaning up and helping pack and stuff. >> Helping pack. >> Yeah, cuz a lot a lot of stuff's uh, you know, packed up. >> Uh, not really. Not not not too much. >> I mean, there's not a lot in there. If you've been coming for the last three, four, five months packing and doing stuff. >> I would say I've only come maybe twice. >> Only twice. >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> Yeah. >> So then you So what time did you get here tonight? >> About 3. >> About 3:00? >> Maybe 2 or 3. >> What time do you think it is now? >> I thought it was about 9 or 10. >> Okay. So you've been here for what? 6 hours. >> Yeah. And I was just hanging around and I was like, well, let me go ahead and see if the key um and I got the key. I mean, that's it. >> She kept insisting she used a silver key ring, [music] but the officers couldn't find any key where she claimed it was. She also backtracked on how often she visited, dropping from all the time to maybe twice. [music] It was a total train wreck of a cover story. She was digging a hole she couldn't climb out of. >> All right, I I'll go double check. Make sure the key. But but you didn't notice anything wrong with the door. Nothing missing from the door. Nothing >> broken from the door. >> Uh uh that glass thing is was missing. But >> when did you notice that? Cuz I just asked you that. You said no. Everything was >> I mean I didn't I mean I know that's what you're asking about, but I didn't notice it at the time. It didn't >> strike me as odd. >> So when I just asked you if anything's been broken, missing, out of the ordinary, you just said no. >> I mean, no. I didn't really pay attention to it. Were you under the assumption that you could take all the jewelry and stuff? Cuz if you're just here packing and cleaning? >> No, I I was under the assumption I'm going to uh wipe this down and take this where it goes. Uh and it's supposed to run home and get a little something for that's why I was locking up for dinner and I was going to come right back. >> I mean, I wasn't under any assumption at all I was here doing, you know, what I was doing. In the end, Laura's performance was a total flop. She thought she struck gold with the fake jewelry, [music] but all she really earned was a one-way trip to the county jail. Getting caught by a neighbor and then yelling at him for being a good citizen [music] is a special kind of bold. Her packing career ended abruptly, leaving her [music] with plenty of time to reflect on her life choices. The Winder Police Department officially ended Laura King's cleaning career by charging her with burglary and theft [music] by taking. She was eventually sentenced to one month in jail, which was followed by a lengthy 5 years of probation. [music] Share your honest thoughts on this case down in the comments.
