One of our highest priorities on trauma calls is hemorrhage control. And one of the ways that we do that is with this pelvic binder. Firefighter Marquez is going to show how we apply this pelvic binder to a patient who may have a pelvic fracture. Pelvic fractures can cause up to 2 L of blood loss internally, putting us behind the eightball in treatment. The pelvic binder is applied just below the hipbones and pulled to a predetermined pressure to decrease the cavity and slow the bleeding within the pelvic region. We use this device when we suspect a pelvic fracture or internal bleeding in the pelvic region. We're trained to recognize when we should not use this device, and one of those reasons would be a higher femur fracture or hip fracture. This simple practice buys our trauma surgeons critical time from their time on scene to the time they get to surgery.
