[Music] the Coral Springs Police Department training unit decided to put together something for community members to have an opportunity to understand what we do why we do it to learn our use of force policies learn the laws that apply to them and how we put them into play every day in our jobs tonight I've decided to join the citizen scenario night to get a better understanding on a law enforcement and I know this night will teach me a lot as far as communicating with the community just many things that police encounter I know definitely open my eyes for me in this specific scenario the officer had a hard time multitasking doing the daily duties that we have to do as police officers she wasn't able to keep an eye on the suspects hands it was dark and she ended up being shot together we collectively made some scenarios that are very common for us there are common car stops stops for bicycle lights out in the park may be combative or resisting subjects for warrants that don't want to be put in custody use of the Taser which is there's sometimes a misconception about its abilities we kind of combine those all together we instructed them first in a classroom setting then brought him here and let them go hands-on with all of these materials and I think that it's been pretty eye-opening for them she's got a warrant for her arrest we have to arrest her all right that's your job let's go oh when I were here is we have a warrant I'll be waiting a warrant yeah Virginia here Virginia saw what was happening and what she did is she recorded the incident she's uploading this to the news now in this case you've got a video that's going to the news of you this guy's this big strong guy I'm using this little poor little innocent Ashley here so the public perception is shaped by what they see from a very narrow perspective and of course that narrow perspective is being controlled entirely by the person that has filmed it and has possession of the video they don't see any of the lead-up to where you were asking very nicely please put your hands behind your back but they just see this situation where she is saying that she can't what and she can't breathe if she can't breathe those are the sorts of pressures that a police officer who doesn't want to hurt anyone you didn't wanna hurt her that was clear but now you see what happens right under the pressures that they let the guy see every day after this experience I really see what it's like to be a police officer and kind of see how the community and the police interact in a positive way it's good that the city of pearl Springs put this on so all the residents can come and see what the police offers go through and you know kind of get a feeling on what their job is and how they interact with community go overall this was to allow our citizens to you know walk a day and an officer's shoes especially in the community that they live in to see the kinds of calls that we deal with and to understand what we do every day and and show them that we're out there working hard and we want them to feel safe but we also want them to understand and so anything we can do to better connect with them we're going to continue to do
