Don't touch my phone. I'm got 334. >> Some calls remind officers just how unpredictable their job can be. But what happens when a routine response turns into a fight for survival? >> LAY THE DOWN. DAVE, TALK TO ME. DAVE, TALK TO ME. >> WHAT ELSE DO YOU GOT on the knife? >> Where's the [ __ ] knife? >> He's missing half his head. Why didn't I shoot him? Hey, relax. Why didn't I shoot him? >> These were the moments when state troopers faced their final moments on duty. We begin with the case of where what began as a routine traffic stop for illegally tinted windows uncovered a suspect wanted. But the encounter was about to escalate into [music] a dangerous confrontation. >> Grab the phone and come with me to my vehicle so I could get the return and then I can make sure that everything's good. All right, let's go to my vehicle. Okay, come on. >> Hey. Hey, police. Here to help. Here to help. Here to help. He's dead, >> dude. He shot him multiple. He's got one here in the chest or I accident right here and through the face. >> On February 4th, 2021, officer Darien Jarrett pulled over a white Chevy pickup on Interstate 10 near mile marker 101 for having its windows tinted too dark. The driver, Omar Felix Qua, was under investigation by HSI for trafficking of illegal contraband. Here's the footage of the encounter. Afternoon, sir. My name is Darren Jared. I'm with New Mexico State Police. Reason for this update is your window tint's a little too dark. >> Yeah. Do you mind if I open the door? >> Or if you want to roll down the window more? >> Yeah. I notic you got temp tags. You got a registration for the vehicle? >> Yes, sir. >> I'll need registration your driver's license as well. >> At first, everything about the traffic stop seemed routine. But when Omar gave his papers to the officer and intended to walk back to his cruiser, everything took a turn for the worse. >> Huh? >> Yeah. So, I could run my checks and I could talk to him a little bit while I'm running my checks and then he'll show me the picture right away cuz I got paperwork I got to do, you know. Hey, hey, real quick. Real quick. You have a firearm on you? Yeah. Oh, no. I see it. You mind if I take it off you for my safety? All right. Hold on. Hold on. Hold on. All right. Let's go to my vehicle. Okay. Come on. Oh [ __ ] Officer Jarrett was brutally struck by multiple rounds. He is survived by his wife Gabriella and their three children. The traffic stop during which Jarrett suddenly stopped responding to radio communications had taken the worst imaginable turn. Soon after, an HSI agent arrived and was faced with the horrific scene. >> Help. Hey. Hey. Hey. Hey. Police. Here to help. Here to help. HERE TO HELP. HERE TO HELP. Here to help. Hey, >> call1. >> YOU CALL 911. >> HEY, call 911. I'm I'm with HSI. >> Okay. >> Call 911. He's dead. >> [ __ ] >> Hey, I'm just west of that I 10. A police officer was just shot. Meanwhile, as the HSI agents reported their terrifying discovery, Omar was already far gone and a 40m long chase was sparked. >> Hey, bro. What's up? >> Hey. >> Hey, let's uh What do you want to spike him? >> Um, did he at him? >> Yeah, officer is down, bro. Do you want to go check on the officer, too? >> No, let's No, let No, let let's stop this guy, man. We got to stop him. >> Okay, >> let's just let's just Let's shoot at him. Let's shoot through his windshield. What's up, bro? >> We We got to through his windshield. Spiking is not going to do nothing, bro. >> We got to stop him. >> We can park, bro. We can park somewhere here, too. >> The officers agreed on what had to be done. Omar had to be brought down. However, what the officers didn't know at the time was what he was armed with. That detail would ultimately change the course of their next encounter with him once they managed to track him down. >> 164. Copy. Stopping at the 116. 46. Omar responded with multiple rounds of gunfire before driving off again. The officers now knew they were dealing with a ruthless suspect who posed a serious threat to everyone nearby. As the pursuit resumed with more units joining and officers attempting to deploy spike strips, bringing Omar to a stop proved anything but easy. At one point, officers even stood at the side of the road, firing at him in an effort to stop his vehicle. >> Where is he? >> Central fire from >> Where is he? >> Right there. The units chasing Omar were eventually able to pit his vehicle, but that's when yet [music] another brutal exchange of gunfire erupted. >> GET [screaming] OUT. DO NOT MOVE. >> Do not move. >> Watch your hands. Watch your hands. Watch your hands. >> Watch your crossfire. >> Crossfire. [laughter] Crossfire. >> Secure them. Secure. Here. You got it. Meanwhile, as some officers engaged the suspect, others assisted the recently wounded officer who had been shot after Omar exited his vehicle. No, no, no. Let go. Let go. It's okay. Yeah, he got hit. >> He got hit. All right. Come on. Get into the vehicle right here. Get into the vehicle right here. Get to the vehicle right here. The suspect had a history of prior charges, including armed robbery and assault, for which he served several years in prison. During this incident, he was charged with multiple offenses, including attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, assault with a deadly weapon, and fleeing from police. Officer Jarrett was struck six times during the confrontation. Another officer who was hit in the shoulder recovered fully from his injuries. Up next, officers respond to a report of a woman being held hostage inside a vehicle. The encounter would soon take an unexpected turn. >> My [ __ ] brother. >> Everything as it is. >> On April 2nd, 2022, officers in Santa Fe received a 911 call reporting that a woman had been kidnapped and was being held hostage inside a vehicle. As officers worked to stop the vehicle, they had no way of knowing how the encounter would ultimately unfold. >> Light traffic at the moment. VJ takes from here. Locate your direction for me. >> Headed south on I25 in the northbound lane. >> Copy. 290. ready cars >> and he just turned around. We are now flipping back headed back onto I25 and now we're headed back into Santa Fe at 40. >> Copy. Anybody that's ahead of us that's close to the highway. Let's see if we can get some spikes. >> We're again headed in the opposite lane of travel. So, we're traveling north and southbound traffic. >> Copy. Anybody that's ahead, let's see if we can't uh start slowing traffic down that's coming the opposite direction against them. 90 light traffic. >> Currently headed back to exit 284. >> Light traffic speed still at 90. As the pursuit continued, 43-year-old officer Robert Duran was involved in a serious collision. While the remaining officers pressed on with the chase, they had no idea what had happened behind them. >> He's reck slowing down. He's slowing down. He's slowing down. Going to the left in the ditch right now. Copy. >> How you guys for? >> I got the female coming back to me right now. Probably one. So 61 and uh 233 and a couple other officers are going to the northbound lane to deal with the accident and the rest of us have it uh contained here with state police. All right, get all the command. Okay. I don't know exactly what I'm seeing. At this point, additional units responded to officer Robert Duran's location, but what they discovered upon arrival would reveal the devastating extent of the crash. >> This guy, >> this guy is probably hurt the worst right now. And your officer is complaining of chest pain here. Um, Hey, just just leave it. We're not going to be just >> um these guys are helping me just with kind of first aid stuff, >> but I'm sorry, guys. >> I'm really sorry. I was coming from Las Vegas and he was 107. >> Okay. Pass out some water, brother. my brother. >> The situation became even more serious as officers realized more than one patrol vehicle had been involved in the crash. >> Anywhere coming. Start coordinating. We're uh using everybody up. >> Okay. Uh before I do that, >> I found her with a little bit of pulse. >> Please move your vehicle. You're in the crossfire right now. >> You have ETA on the meds. >> You can move over here by everything as it is. 6 on second 104. And then now he's not breathing. >> Do we have any vehicles? driving vehicles. >> Who was driving that? >> Funny. >> Yeah. >> In the end, officer Robert Duran was pronounced deceased at the scene. Investigators then turned their attention to identifying the suspect. After processing the vehicle, they recovered DNA belonging to 46-year-old Janine Harmo. The investigation ultimately concluded that the reported kidnapping had been fabricated, and that Janine was responsible for leading officers on the pursuit. She was later convicted of two counts of first-degree murder, receiving a stolen motor vehicle, aggravated fleeing, and tampering with evidence. Up next, what began as a routine assist [music] to a stranded driver quickly turned into an ambush against a responding officer. [music] Guys, I got >> On December 2nd, 2023, Houston police officers were investigating a case near Harwin Drive when they spotted a 23-year-old suspect. Moments later, they lost sight of him. Uh, yeah. >> Y'all didn't see him do anything. That's fine. >> Oh [ __ ] Your turn. >> The suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene. The sergeant was rushed to the hospital and recovered. Next up, officers respond to an emergency call after a man refuses to accept the end of his marriage. But the situation was about to turn into a violent confrontation. >> Put your [ __ ] hands behind your bag now. They pull in my driveway. >> Why didn't I Hey, relax. >> On July 21st, 2023, officers in Texas responded to a 911 call from a woman who reported that her ex-husband had returned to her property, refusing to accept the separation. According to the caller, he had been stalking her and was now making threats outside her home. Officers immediately responded to the scene, but the encounter was about to take a dangerous turn. >> Let me see your 104. What's your 20? I have a deputy down. Deputy down. Deputy down. All he would do is pop his head and show me my hands and then right when I flipped it off safety and pull started pulling the trigger, he rifle up like this and I just should Show me his hands the first time James. >> Investigators soon discovered that the victim's ex-husband, Cody Douglas Pritchard, had previous encounters with law enforcement. During questioning, he repeatedly claimed he had acted in self-defense, but the evidence would soon be examined more closely. >> [ __ ] will. >> No, you do not. >> The hell I won't. >> Cody, I'm Get the OUT OF MY WAY. >> THAT IS GOING TO LIVE IN THAT TRAILER. SHE CAN LIVE OUT THERE. NO SIR. >> YES SIR. YES MA'AM. >> NO. >> Let me tell you something. >> You touch his car Cody, YOU GO TO JAIL. >> COP. >> As soon as that front bumper and that groom guard crossed into them pillars, I hate him. You know, we didn't have problems with officers around this area and sheriffs and whatnot. I didn't know what the hell was going on. I mean, you don't sit down the road and cosplay what you're going to do for 15, 20 minutes on the side of the highway before you drive down in front of somebody's house. Then all I hear is in the background, I can hear screaming to the kids. I dog yel and I'm thinking to myself, my sister-in-law's in that camper trailer right behind me at the last place I seen her earlier today. My other sister-in-law is in the house with her boyfriend. My wife's outside. I got two kids and a three-year-old and I don't even know where they're at. And that's when I I step back behind my truck and I fired through my windshield or through my back glass and through the cab. And then I I asked him, "Drop your gun. Step out with hands up. >> Cody continued to claim he had acted in self-defense. [music] Yet, investigators soon began noticing inconsistencies between his account and the evidence. >> You know, this is a stand your ground case. I'm not going to put up with your [ __ ] at my house behind me. And I got women and kids back there. And I heard this pop bop and I just stepped around the side of it. When I did, I fired that last round. I fired and I seen I seen first thing I think I I grazing I want to say and that time that was before I fired through the cab. At the time I fired through the cab there was a car at 50 ft or 50 ft I say 50 yards down the road coming. So I waited. When I waited I heard that him fire a few more rounds. When I stepped out of that truck on that last round I fired. >> Where were you when you heard that first pop? I was on my way out the truck door. >> So you were coming out with the truck door. >> I was Yeah. I shut the truck door open >> with the rifle. You're coming out >> more like I probably had the rifle. My hand was coming out. >> Door's open. You got the rifle. You're coming out. >> I heard you pop. >> I heard the pop and I looked over and that's when I mean I still was on my way out the door and I looked over at him. Well, he's already on the way back around behind the SUV right then. >> Okay. >> Cuz I didn't no more get two steps out the [music] truck and it's pop. I hear burns wind by felt like it dragged my shoulder and that's when I dropped the one knee on the first round about fire at first and where was that at? That was that was me at the back tire of the truck and that was him at the back of the SUV which would have been his second, third, fourth. >> Cody Douglas maintained that he had only responded after hearing a disturbance. But when investigators asked him to walk through the encounter step by step, Cody hesitated, revealing inconsistencies that would become a key focus of the investigation. Would it help if I gave you a pen and paper? You can draw me out a little little map. >> Yeah, I can. That's good. >> I I'm just I'm a pretty simple guy, man. I'm sitting here floating around. And >> where are you aiming when you're you're on one knee? You're aiming down the side of your car. What do you see at that point? When I dropped to one knee after I heard the second, third, and fourth, I I see the cylinder the brake lights uh making the uh outline of the human body. anything you wish you would have happened different tonight which I wouldn't I didn't intend that when I woke up this morning >> but once once this happened you'd had enough and you you kind of made your mind up like okay I'm not going to put up with this no more >> once he fired the f the first three four rounds is when I made up my mind I was going to put up with it >> yeah when you dropped to a knee we >> when I dropped to a knee I ain't I aim the end man's life. >> Okay. >> I take the the bottom to stop whatever's happening. I always have. I've done it when I was a kid. I've done it when >> some people like here. What can you see? You aiming here. You're aiming at his head. You're on one aiming down. >> I'm aiming it up. >> Aiming up at his head. >> In the end, investigators concluded that the physical evidence did not support Cody's claim of self-defense. He was charged with homicide and was later sentenced to death. Next, what appeared to be a routine vehicle check quickly turned into one of the most dangerous encounters responding troopers could face. >> On August 7th, 2021, officers stopped a vehicle for multiple traffic violations. The driver initially complied until the routine encounter took a brutal turn. You put the music for me and you just cut off the car. Okay. Is there one at a time? All right. One at a time. One at a time. Oh, I thought you were going to take her out first. That's why. >> All right. One at a time. >> I'm going to drive him. I told I told him. >> How are you, sir? >> Oh, perfect. Make sure you guys have on you. Where is it? Okay. No weapons on here. You guys are smoking, right? Yeah, I saw that. And you guys have open liquor in the car. Are you from here? >> I'm going to have you step out. Step out. You're going to turn around and put your hands up. Okay. Is that a In the end, the driver was charged with the homicide of an officer. Up next, what began as a simple traffic [music] stop quickly escalated into a life-threatening confrontation, leaving one deputy critically injured. >> You were on the wrong side of the road, Ken. I was not on the wrong side of the road. >> You were driving on the wrong side of the road, brother. Get out of the car. >> Wrong side of the road. >> Get out of the car. >> I'm hit. >> On February 8th, 2024, Deputy Shelby Edgars noticed a suspicious vehicle swerving between lanes. She quickly attempted a traffic stop, but what followed spiraled [music] into something far more terrifying. >> 639 Bravo land bravo Yankee displayed on the Silver Lexus severe. >> Do me a favor. Do me a favor, brother. Pull it. Pull into the driveway. That way we're all the way out of the road. Okay. >> All right, my friend. Now that we're out of the way there. >> That's all right. My name's Shelby. I work for the L County Sheriff's Office. I stopped you not cuz you were all over the road. I'm sorry. I I didn't I didn't notice it. I was I just put my hair up. >> Cutting your hair up. >> Yeah. >> Okay. Have you had anything to drink or anything? >> Oh, hell. No. I'm literally just leaving. No, I'm just leaving. >> Okay. >> Uh just got back from uh Gatlinburg Pitman. >> Cool. >> Just got a phone with my son. Well, you you went across the line just a little bit and I thought, well, you know, maybe >> I would just put my hair up. I'm sorry. I got high. I was just putting my hair up. >> I got you. Yeah. Completely any other lane. >> I call my mama and say, "Mama, I'm not gonna make it tonight. I just I got to go get clothes." Like, I'm just dealing with a lot. I I promise I didn't do nothing. I'm sorry. >> Okay. I'm sorry about that. I'm sorry you're going through some stuff. >> Oh, it's a lot going on. Yeah. But I literally just got the phone. My son, just talked to the guy that's painting. Uh sent me a picture of uh some lights that he sent me. >> Okay. >> That I'm literally just got I literally just got the phone with him. >> Okay. Good deal. I paint mama's house. He just sent me this >> and I called him back. But >> but I'm on Bluetooth. >> Okay, you're good. >> At first, Officer Edgars didn't notice anything unusual about the man. He just seemed like someone dealing with a lot. But after checking his license and insurance, she realized the car was registered to Kenneth Deart's mother. When she returned to speak with him, the strong smell of marijuana hit her. She calmly informed Kenneth that she intended to search the vehicle, but he didn't take that lightly. So, I smell weed in the car. Have you ever smoked weed in this car? >> Nobody. I don't smoke or nothing. >> Okay. You don't smoke or nothing? No. Has anybody ever smoked in the car? >> Nobody. This is my grandma's car. There's no smokers, man. >> Okay. Well, I smell it. So, what I'm going to do is I'm going to have you step out and hang out with me. Okay. My partner's going to get here. I'm going search. Her backup was still a few minutes away, but she made one final attempt to get him out of the vehicle. >> It smells like weed in here. I didn't say you did it, >> dog. I love you. >> Go ahead and step out for me, Kenny. >> I'm not stepping out. I'm refusing to search. >> Okay. You're refusing to step out of the vehicle. >> I'm refusing to search my dog. >> Okay.
