Where are you, dude? Who are you? [Music] >> 3T64 compact shot fired. I'm hitting the orb. >> Most traffic stops end with a warning or a ticket. But what happens when a routine pullover turns into a fight for survival? >> I stopped you for a lawful traffic stop. >> I I don't give a damn. Are you lying? >> Listen, American. This is Take it. Take I take this with you. Okay. >> No, no, no. These were the moments when seemingly ordinary traffic stops became extremely dangerous. We begin with the case of a deputy who found a man asleep in his car. But this wasn't just anyone and he had no intention of cooperating with the law. >> Hi, >> good. How are you? You were sleeping, so I needed to check on you, make sure that you are all right. >> Um, but I do need to identify who you are. >> No, no, no, no, no. Please don't. Please, please. >> I don't know what I would have done if you didn't show up when you did. >> In the early morning hours of July 23rd, 2018, a female officer spotted a sleeping man inside a vehicle and attempted to make contact with the man who initially provided a false name. He was later identified as Kenneth Martell, a fugitive with an active warrant for murder. Here's how the traffic stop unfolded. >> 511 is going to be occupied by one male. Hi. >> Good. How are you? >> What are you doing parked back here? >> Just taking a nap. >> Okay. Where are you coming from? How long have you been here? coming from Colorado. Came from >> Okay. [Music] You don't have a driver's license? Not on you. Do you have anything with your name on it? What about your vehicle registration? Anything with your name on it? >> Did I do something wrong? >> No. No, but you're parked on private property right now. Um, it's suspicious that you're back here. This is doesn't normally happen. You're sleeping, so I needed to check on you, make sure that you are all right. >> Um, but I do need to identify who you are. You didn't do anything wrong. I just need to make sure that you're okay. >> Change, but I got change. You know, I've been on the road. >> Okay, not a big deal. I just have to make sure you know you don't have any warrants or anything, which I'm sure you don't. Once I confirm that, you'll be on your way. No big deal. >> Coming up, the officer ran the name James Duncan through the system only to quickly realize the suspect had given her a fake identity as her partner rushed to the scene to help regain control. The situation took a turn for the worse, escalating rapidly before he could even arrive. >> All right. So, you said your name was James, right? So, how come they can't find you out of Pennsylvania? They're not finding a deal, a driver's license record for James Duncan. Do you have anything in the vehicle with your name on it? >> 8511. I have the 284 out of the Pennsylvania. All right, cover me. Okay, step to the side. >> Touchdown rescue started. All right, I'm calling for my 85 11 and 21. There's going to be information on that vehicle. Looks like it's connected to a high side. >> No [ __ ] plate in the front. Was he sleeping or? >> Yeah. Yeah, I'm pretty sure he's drunk because >> he had that look on his face. >> Yeah, >> but >> he's got beer in the back and open bottle right there. >> I just need it for right now. >> I have hand sanitizer in the car. You want it? >> I got some, too. >> The female officer had every reason to be grateful for her partner's timing, arriving just in time. >> I am never making a move without you again. Are you and your partner 10 time two? >> We are 10 time two right now. Yes. >> I don't know what I would have done if you didn't show up when you did. >> Huh? >> I don't know what I would have done if you didn't show up when you did. >> You would have done the right thing. >> I couldn't get to my gun. >> I couldn't grab your weapon on >> No. So he was he had both of his hands on his gun >> and so I grabbed the barrel and I pushed it down and but I had to use both of my arms to get the strength that I needed to over power him. And then I went to go grab for my mic. I called was trying to scream 1032 1032 but he grabbed my arm or my hand and my gun hand was holding the his barrel down. Coming up, paramedics and additional officers arrived on the scene to take control of the situation and provide medical assistance. >> Is that what you want to know? Is he deceased or not? >> I mean, it's it's comforting. >> Wow. >> All right. What was he doing? >> He had the gun in my head. >> Are you okay? Are you okay? >> I'm good. I'm a little like but I'm okay. All right. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. He would have my head off. >> Hey, the car was apparently wanted for a homicide out of PA. >> Okay, just so you know. >> The one is the one is empty. The other one had >> Which one is empty? >> This one. This one. >> This one. This one. >> He had this one in my face. Just leave it for now. You're doing okay, though? >> I'm I'm okay. >> Okay. You're not injured physically? >> No. I mean, I'm My arm is sore from rubbing against the door, but I'm okay. >> Okay. >> Um, yeah, I'm okay. >> Okay. All right. >> You guys notified your command. The deputy chief is on the way right now. Okay. >> So, all right. Next, we have the case of Kenny, a man stopped on his way home from a Gatlinburg Pitman game who turned a simple traffic stop into a deadly encounter that cost an officer his life. >> You were on the wrong side of the road, Kenny. >> I was not on the wrong side of the road. >> You were driving on the wrong side of the road, brother. Get out of the car. >> Wrong side of the road. >> Get out of the car. again. I'm here. >> On February 8th, 2024, Deputy Shelby Edgars noticed a suspicious vehicle swerving between lanes. She quickly attempted a traffic stop, but what followed spiraled into something far more terrifying. >> 639 Bravo Lane. Bravo Yankee displayed on Silver Lexus severe. >> Do me a favor. Do me a favor, brother. Pull it. Pull into the driveway. That way we're all the way out of the road. Okay. [Applause] All right, my friend. Well, I paint mama's house. He just sent me this and I called him back. But >> but I'm on Bluetooth. >> Okay, you're good. >> At first, Officer Edgars didn't notice anything unusual about the man. He just seemed like someone dealing with a lot. But after checking his license and insurance, she realized the car was registered to Kenneth Deart's mother. When she returned to speak with him, the strong smell of marijuana hit her. She calmly informed Kenneth that she intended to search the vehicle, but he didn't take that lightly. >> So, I smell weed in the car. Have you ever smoked weed in this car? >> Nobody. I don't smoke or nothing. >> Okay. You don't smoke or nothing? >> No. >> Has anybody ever smoked them before? >> Nobody. This is my grandma's car. That's bogus, man. >> Okay. Well, I smell it. I'm trying to make this easy. Okay. >> I'm just refusing to search. I love you, Nemo. >> At this point, Deart was refusing to follow officer Edgar's commands. Her backup was still a few minutes away, but she made one final attempt to get him out of the vehicle. >> It smells like weed in here. I didn't say you did. >> Dog, I love you. >> Go ahead and step out for me, Kenny. >> I'm not stepping out. This time involving a former US military serviceman who suddenly pulled a gun during a routine stop. You >> So now you want to give me that? Hey, don't you read? 800 bra set 80. Jamal Wall-E was transported to a nearby hospital where he was later pronounced deceased. The injured officers were also taken to a local hospital and treated for their gun wounds. That case was wild. But on a similar note, this next traffic stop spiraled into chaos the moment the officer approached the suspect's vehicle. >> 364 contact fire. I'm hitting the orb. On June 16th, 2023, New York State Trooper Richard Albert initiated a routine traffic stop for speeding. Behind the wheel was 32-year-old Nelson Tro with his girlfriend Alicia in the passenger seat.
