[music] Some people believe they can hide their crimes without being seen. But what happens when surveillance cameras capture criminals bearing their very victims? >> I heard him crying and I was like the bag and I was like, "Oh my god, >> which dumpster?" >> Look, look what she does. >> I know. Just tosses. >> Look at that piece of missing a hub cap on the car, too. >> These were the moments when suspects didn't realize officers were watching them hide the body. We begin with the case of when officers responded to a report of something unusual found in an abandoned area, but they had no idea the discovery would lead them into something far more disturbing. >> 100% happened on [music] today, but it has happened recently under >> on April 4th, 2024, police in Manchester, England, received a report after a body was discovered in the north of the city. Soon, similar reports emerged from other locations, prompting a deeper investigation as officers reviewed security footage. One man repeatedly appeared carrying heavy bags while more reports continued to [music] come in. But they were beginning to uncover a much more disturbing pattern. as officers dug deeper into the footage. Other security cameras captured the same man near locations linked to the reports. Then one night, the victim's bank account belonging to 67-year-old Steuart Everett was accessed. With his face captured on camera, officers finally had a lead. But identifying him would be only the beginning. As investigators gathered more evidence about the man captured on surveillance footage, they began looking into his possible connection to Stuart Everett. The suspect, identified as 42-year-old Marson Merkuich, was found to have been living with Stuart, who had taken him into his home during a difficult time. But as officers learned more about their relationship, the investigation began to reveal a side of Mayerkovich that raised even more questions. >> Wearing a dark or black colored beanie hat with what looks like an orange logo on it. Um, a dark gray jacket, a lighter gray bottoms. Um, carrying some kind of gray bag for life and black trainers. I got one one got one matching that description. in front of you. You're detained for the purpose of a search while your identity. Okay. >> Give us a call, please. >> Double check, please. >> Check this group with a van to collect this potential customer that's coming in. >> Have you got anything sharp or anything in your pockets? >> Absolutely. Okay. Okay. It's fine. Don't worry. We'll just check and then >> blaster box dropper. >> It's definitely mistake 100%. >> I know. I appreciate that. All we've had is information passed to us from officers investigating the a serious matter as to whether just on >> right now, >> not today, but it has happened recently. Okay. >> It's 12 minutes past 1 minute time. be under arrest. Suspicion. Do >> you understand the offense? You're under arrest for the meeting time. Okay. Suspicion of which occurred in Sulford. All right. >> So, you were taken to police station for question regarding that. >> Okay. I go with you and I question >> do it again if you want. >> Right. What's your ad? >> What's your ad? >> As investigators analyze the evidence. A possible motive began to emerge. Having more than60,000 in debt and without a job, Marson appeared to have a reason to target Stuart's identity and assets. He was eventually taken to court, but the case was far from over. The first statutory aggravating feature is that the was planned and premeditated. I bear in mind, however, that I must avoid double counting and that in a case such as this, the fact that the was planned and premeditated is a key aspect of the fact that the was for gay. And so to a significant extent, this feature has already been accounted for. The second statutory aggravating feature is that the victim was particularly vulnerable because of age and disability. As I have said, Stuart Everett was 67 and in poor health. This is not why he was targeted by you, but it means that you knew that he would not put up a fight. The third, and in the context of this case, the most serious statutory aggravating feature is the concealment, dismemberment, and destruction of Stuart Everett's body. You dismembered Stuart Everett's body in your own bedroom. You cut up his body in a particularly unpleasant and disrespectful way, using a hacksaw and even separating his face from his head. You wrapped the parts up in cling film or bin bags and placed them in shopping bags. Then you spent a number of days traveling to various places so as to dispose of the body parts, mainly traveling by public transport. Your aim was that the body parts would never be found. And if all went well for you, the death of Stuart Everett would not come to light for a long time after you had made your getaway. You acted in an almost unbelievably coldblooded and macar way and showed complete disrespect and contempt for your friend's remains. In the end, forensic and DNA evidence helped establish Marson's involvement. The jury found him guilty of homicide. He was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 34 years behind bars. [music] Moving to the next case, the sudden disappearance of a woman would prompt a deeper investigation that would reveal something deeply troubling. >> Do you know Sarah? >> I don't know. >> Okay. Sarah [music] went missing >> to say that I I know. >> Well, except for the rest on suspicion of kidnap and we believe that you've been involved in her disappearance and taking her away from her family. >> On March 4th, 2021, officers from London received a report from a family after one of their relatives identified as Sarah Everard went missing after leaving to withdraw money from an ATM. As the investigation began, officers would uncover something far deeper behind her disappearance. As officers reviewed the footage, one detail caught their attention. A car had been seen stopped near Sarah shortly before her disappearance. Tracing the vehicle led investigators to 48-year-old Wayne Kens, raising questions about his connection to Sarah. From there, officers began monitoring him closely. At this point, the evidence and Wayne Kusen's unusual behavior had raised further suspicions. On March 9th, 2021, investigators went to his home looking for answers about his possible connection to Sarah. But what they found would raise even more questions. So, we're here to talk to you about Sarah. Show the picture. >> Do you know [music] Sarah? >> I don't know. >> Okay. Sarah went missing um I'll show you some pictures of of her on the day. Sarah went missing um on Wednesday and her parents oblqu inquiry that's been conducted so far has led us to come and speak to you about it and to see what we what we know about Sarah. Okay. So would you like to do you know where [music] Sarah is? >> No. Do you know anything about what happened? I know that um she went missing up in um London somewhere. Um what about a week ago or so? Just from what I've got on the news? >> Okay. Have you ever personally met her? >> No, not personally. >> You had any interactions with her at all? >> Why why have I personal interactions with her? >> Well, it's very difficult because I can't go into a lot of the evidence. that would require that's not part of what an interview is. Okay, this interview is just about trying to find her. >> She's been missing for a while. >> I'm sat in handcuffs and asking me what I know her. So, you must have something to say that I I know her. >> Well, said you've been arrested on suspicion of kidnap and we believe that you've been involved in her disappearance and taken her away from her family. >> Okay. So, we are trying to find herbvious. Obviously, everybody is very worried about her. She's got, you know, parents. She's got, you know, siblings. >> She's got a girlfriend. There's a lot of people that care about her. You see on the news, there are people that, you know, reach out about her. >> Sure. >> Out there looking for her every day >> and she's missing. And our job, our primary job here is to find. >> During the conversation, Wayne maintained that he had no connection to Sarah. But when investigators pressed him for answers, he revealed something they had not expected. We believe you know something about where she is. And that's why we're here to look for her and to try and find her. And that's why we're talking to you now is to try and get you to have a good think about it. Just anything you can about time. Okay. Um well I am in financial um and I've been um lent on by um I don't know who they are there group the gang whatever um and they told me I need to go and pick up girls and get them to them. So, um I said, "What happening?" Um and it then came through that they were going to harm my family, take them away, and they'll use them instead. Um at that point, I had no option to try and find somebody. So, I don't um there's a couple of names. I was told a place to um take her That's it. That's all. That is all I know. And to this group of people, >> tell me about them. I need to find them. Tell me everything you know. >> Okay. >> There was a white sprinter fan. Um a um was between sort of lenstone area that I dropped her off. Um I still don't know. I I don't know. They they just I just um parked my car up and then the van come up behind me, flashed me and they all jumped out um and then they they took this girl. >> At this point, Wayne revealed that he had carried out a service requested by others, a statement that only raised further questions for investigators. >> I don't know whether my family's going to be or what still, but they they threatened they threatened to take my family away from me. So at that point I'm I'm doing what I can to protect my family. That's it. So all I know is it was a roundabout. I we could drive there now. I could show you roughly. I don't know Lenham Maidstone area at all. >> Did it on Google. >> If we did it on Google map if we drove it to do it. >> I drove from Ashford to Maidstone. Okay, there's a roundabout that breaks up, I guess. So, I was This is the first big roundabout come to you carry straight over to Maidstone, but instead I went round that roundabout and back up another road. Um, and at that point I was flashing poor paper. >> Wayne continued explaining that he had been trying to protect his family. But the more he explained, the more investigators questioned his version of events. >> Open my door, open that door, um, pushed me out against the front of the car, took the girl, drove off. That's it. They said, "We'll be in touch." So, I'm here. I'm off work with stress because I'm here to protect my family. I want to be here 24/7 for my family. They come from my family. I've got nothing myself. I got no choice. >> I'll go back through the room with you in a minute. All right. But how do they contact you? How do you contact? >> I tried to over one of their cool girls and rip her off. So she's told them and um they they got me. So how do they how did they contact you? How They've been in contact with me to make this threat. >> They just they just tell me be here. Be here. So, Hotel Burton down Folkston could be here. Okay. So, I turned up. Um but I've got no mobile number and they have got my mobile number. They're obviously outside watching following. I just honestly >> How are they telling you to be there? How is it that they give you those directions? >> Yeah, they'll come outside. So they'll be outside here. >> Yeah. >> And then they'll say, "Well, you're going to be in Fton at this time or you're going to be in Ashford at this time." That's it. There's no links, no telephone numbers. I'm completely on my own, but at the same time being threatened. Um it had um Romanian plates on the on the van. Um white um like Mercy. In the end, vehicle records, phone data, and forensic evidence connected Wayne Kusens to Sarah Everard's [music] disappearance. Investigators also determined that he had used his police identification to carry out a false arrest. Kusens was convicted of Sarah's kidnapping [music] and receiving a life sentence in October 2021 with no possibility of parole. Up next, concerned friends alerted police after receiving unusual messages from their colleagues, unaware of what the investigation would soon uncover. On September 1st, 2020, officers began investigating the sudden disappearance of a young woman after her family and friends noticed [music] unusual messages being sent from her phone. As the search continued, investigators began retracing her final movements. But one detail would soon change the direction of the investigation. As investigators reviewed footage and gathered more evidence, they identified the man seen with Lorraine as 40-year-old Aam Mangori. Further investigation uncovered additional evidence connecting him to her disappearance, raising even more questions about what had happened after they were last seen together. In the end, investigators uncovered some of the strongest evidence against Mangori, including searches made on Lorraine's phone related to the crime and evidence showing attempts to conceal what had happened. >> [music]
