He didn't >> [clears throat] >> know what in the world happened. To be honest with you, I don't even I can't even remember how the gun came into play, for real. Some people think they're clever enough to slip under the police radar after committing terrible acts. But what happens when their carefully laid plans unravel the moment their victim survived? >> I didn't do nothing, man. I did it, man. I did it. I did it, man. You got to believe me. I didn't do anything. I did it. I did it, man. Man, I did it. These were the moments when he realized their victim actually survived. [music] We start with a case where a man claimed to have found his wife deceased in their basement, but his entire plan unraveled the moment he showed a spark of anger at the news she might still be alive. She's fighting. Huh? [music] What? She says she's fighting. On September 14th, 2018, officers received a desperate call from 37-year-old Jimmy Allen reporting that he had just found his wife's body in the basement of their home. But as officers would later discover, that 911 call was only the beginning, and it would soon unfold into a deep intricate investigation. Okay, what's going on there? She was face down. Somebody call 911. I tried to give her CPR. I pulled her I turned Officers then rushed to the scene hoping to save the woman's life. When they arrived, they found a desperate Jimmy [music] performing CPR on his wife, Amy Allen, who was lying on the floor. Police department, police department. HELLO, HELP. YES. How long she's been down? Do you have any idea? Do you have any idea? >> remember, about 20 minutes. >> Okay. >> [panting] >> While there, the officer noticed something strange. There were no major injuries on the woman's body, only a thin mark on her neck. Jimmy, thinking he still had control of the situation, threw himself onto the floor in a desperate performance. However, this act wouldn't last long. Minutes later, Jimmy appeared surprisingly composed showing no real signs of grief. But then, his behavior shifted again from one moment to the next, a pattern that immediately raised red flags for the officers. You want to come upstairs with me real quick? Okay. Did she make any statements at all? No, she was irritated. She was irritated. She was like irritated and saying things, so I went back downstairs to check on her, and she was Did Amy have a history of anything like this? Nothing nothing in her background at all? >> Ever. Okay. >> I'm literally I'm hoping I wake up, dude. At this point, officers were already suspicious of Jimmy's behavior. However, the biggest red flag came when an EMT worker offered a small glimmer of hope about Amy's condition, [music] and that news seemed to upset him. She's fighting. Huh? What? She says she's fighting. >> [snorts] >> EMT managed to reestablish a faint pulse, meaning Amy was still fighting for her life. What should have been hopeful news for the husband instead seemed to trouble him. Still, Jimmy continued with his innocent husband act. Oh, this is terrible. I got to talk to the cops. At this point, Jimmy had already raised enough red flags for officers to doubt his behavior. When asked about what had happened that night, he said that the couple had argued at a bar, gone back home, and that moments later, he found his wife's body lying in the basement. Amy was then taken to the hospital, and the next morning, officers reached out to Jimmy again to hear his side of the story and try to better understand what had happened that night. She was listening to music and making lunch and breakfast, smile on her face. Ashley had a friend over, Kayla, after school. Amy picked her up, and I was just lying in bed, and they came here. She made everybody dinner 6:30. We rolled out to take them to the game. She said a couple times that oh, that's not going to work, and she's normally positive and was sort of down and negative, and she We started to disagree about it, and she's like, you know, I hope that works out for you. And I'm like, what do you mean me? This I'm talking about our life. Like, and this isn't hardcore planning. This is like and you talking about, you know, our future, and she just Well, I hope that works out for you. setting Louie, one of our cats, and [music] what the hell are you doing in the basement? And immediately do that and started, you know, check for a pulse. When I glanced down there, I saw there looked like a upturned kitty litter pail. >> [snorts] >> Cuz I'm like I that's I like I said, it was just so just Sure. You know, I spent all night kind of thinking and then >> [music] >> playing back the what was what triggered what what was Has she ever tried anything like this before? >> had anything thing ever like We live a healthy lifestyle. We work out. We go rock climbing three times a week at Ann Arbor. We like cook meals at home. We grow our own vegetables out here. We Money trouble? No. I mean, we're this is like the pinnacle of like, you know, best job I've ever had. I make great money. She's a stay-at-home mom. She's takes care of the five cats, the pool, and is there for my daughter doing sports and activities. >> Sure. >> According to Jimmy, Amy went home alone after their argument at the bar. He claimed that before picking up his daughter from school, he stopped by the basement to check on her and found her lying on the ground. But when officers spoke to his daughter, Ashley, [music] she said her mother was mentally stable and that her parents hadn't been arguing recently. With growing doubts, officers searched the house for clues and found Amy's computer [music] and phone. Sadly, on September 17th, Amy was pronounced deceased, and the situation quickly shifted into a possible homicide investigation. Going through her phone, investigators [music] discovered a man named George with whom Amy was having an affair. It was now time to confront Jimmy again and determine whether this could be connected to the [music] tragic event. Well, I'm so inner focused and self-focused that maybe I could have seen things that were going on that maybe could have clued me in to what my wife was in so much turmoil that I I couldn't even see it. I mean, that's how it feels. Like, I don't even know who I am. >> Describe yourself. What kind of person are you? I would say I'm a type A personality. All right. I like structure, organization. I'm ambitious. Um I'm always seeking to improve myself and others around me. So why all this is so depressing to me is because like I had really taken measures in the last couple of years to like make sure that myself, my family were like mentally fit, like mentally healthy, like doing pursuing things that not only get you the goal, like but helping others, being kind, making an impact that making a positive impact, making that type of person, making a positive impact on people. Looking back now, where you're at now, do you Does Does anything pop out at you as Oh, yeah. Yeah, there's I mean My wife had some issues, and uh What kind of issues? She struggled from like social anxiety, so she was She She's been like that for years. She just She's extremely shy and introverted person. She's never had She never developed relationships. Even when we were in college, she didn't have any friends. She was playing like video games compulsively, that World of Warcraft thing. That got out of hand, and so she just started She started isolating herself. Um and so I had taken measures to when we got up here to help her break out. According to Jimmy, he had been trying to help Amy with her personal struggles, but Amy's relatives painted a completely different picture. They described him as extremely toxic and controlling, someone who constantly monitored Amy's actions. He kept her isolated and often clashed with her son, Caleb. Given his behavior, officers suspected Jimmy already knew about Amy's affair with George, [music] especially because surveillance footage from the bar showed her talking to George right next to him. However, Jimmy's reaction to the affair would turn out to be surprising. There was one time when I was I went to the Isle of Man and a dog bit During Any time during your marriage, do you know if she was unfaithful to you? I don't think that would be possible. Why is that? She didn't seem to have the capacity to Okay. like talk to people, man. I mean, she was like incredibly introverted. What was your knowledge of her affair? She I don't think she had an affair. Do [clears throat] I know? I have no idea. >> I wouldn't think it was uh possible. There's a lot of stuff that she had tried to delete there, but I mean, we're talking telling this other guy she loves him. I think that you both knew that. I'm not I'm not I'm not going to lie to you today, and I haven't, you know. So I just I'll I'll just tell you right now I don't believe it. And then the chats lead up to the 14th, the same day that this happened. Clearly, there was something going on between these two people. Did you pull phone records to see if there's any numbers that I could see that I recognize? The fact that for me is crushing, the fact that she even has some. And like I I I legitimately I still don't all the way believe you guys. I'm sorry. I I I I don't think that she had the capacity to do that. I I said this is the most shocking like I can't Can you process For someone who controlled every aspect of his wife's life, Jimmy suddenly seemed clueless about her affair with George. After questioning him, investigators continued to dig deeper into the case. >> [music] >> When the autopsy results came back, Amy's cause of death was determined to be strangulation and asphyxiation. They also concluded that given Amy's height and the height of the basement ceiling, it would have been impossible for her to take her own life there as her feet would have touched the ground. With the evidence stacking up, Jimmy was charged with open >> [music] >> Now, it was up to the judge to hear the witnesses and family members and decide his fate. I stood [music] up, pushed him against the wall, and there was a a second of fear >> [music] >> that came over me, and I realized what I was doing, and I let up. And then I was spun around or maybe I turned around, and then I was from behind on the floor for multiple seconds. It felt like forever during the incident, and I was gasping for air, grabbing for anything, trying to get away from him. You know, I was definitely looking for any injuries. Um you know, whether it be from a hanging or otherwise. Um and I really didn't see any sort of >> [music] >> the typical injuries that I would normally would have seen in a hanging. So, I definitely took note of that. >> No visible [music] injuries. No visible injuries. Is that strike you as odd? It was a red flag. >> A witness no one expected to hear from was George, Amy's lover. And was there an occasion where you came to know a person by the name of the Allen on the internet? Yes. We spoke online often. Um we talked about life. We also um you know, there was a little bit of sexual content uh that's what we talked about. Now, had you ever met Amy in person? Yes, twice. I was here for work, and she had some free time, so she came came to the hotel. So, you're at a hotel? Yes. Do things that happen at a hotel happen at that hotel? Some things, yes. One of the key witnesses was Dr. Elizabeth Buck, who confirmed that Amy could not have taken her own life in that basement. With that conclusion, all signs now pointed to Jimmy as the one responsible for what happened that night. Despite his attorney's efforts to defend him, it was finally time for the judge to deliver his sentence. >> Do you say on your oath that you find the defendant guilty of the lesser offense of second-degree In the end, Jimmy was sentenced to 20 to 45 years in prison with the possibility of parole only in 2040. Moving on to the next case where what began as the lure of a beautiful girl quickly turned [music] into something tragic. She was cleaning I seen I seen her cleaning the off [snorts] the wall. But to be honest, I mean, I would think that she would be a lure. Why not? Cuz Hoyt always had a weakness for women. Mhm. He loves his girls, you know. Yeah, honestly, yes. It's just there was nothing I could do cuz he was already gone like so quick. But it looked like it's it was [music] dangling, and there was just it was like everywhere, and I was just standing there saying, "Stop! Stop!" On May 9th, 2017, police officers from Leon County, Florida, received a frantic call from 31-year-old Peter Torne reporting a murder, a kidnapping, and a stolen vehicle. According to Peter, he and his friend Hoyt Burge had gone to the home of Paige Vowell, who lived with her boyfriend Paige Briggs to deliver painkillers to her. But once inside, Peter discovered they walked into a true house of horrors, and what he witnessed that day [music] would change his life forever. Did anybody say anything when they rushed out? Nobody hearing any any statements being made? Not really. It was all gibberish to me then. I mean, there was there was going on there. I was still Anybody said Paige said something What Do you not remember what Paige said to you? Yeah. The only thing he was saying to me was get down. Down. See him on the ground. He will Did you get down on the ground? Yeah. They That's a big Those were big guns. I was scared a lot. Did anybody attack you? Yeah, I mean, after they basically got Hoyt Hoyt How did How did they attack Hoyt? He just got him around and just started I mean, they attacked him. I mean, what did they do with him? I don't know. I'm not even To be honest, I don't know. I wouldn't even I don't know if they could have put their pistols like I mean, multiple things. Like According to Peter, Paige wasn't by herself. The moment they entered, they found four men inside positioned as if they had been expecting them, and Hoyt appeared to be the target. It was my last breath. >> [gasps] >> I don't know how long I had been >> [snorts] >> Help! They were hitting me. They were hitting those people again. Why did they Why did they stop attacking you? I think I think they gave you time cuz I I I My best [gasps and snorts] bet was to earn their trust and get on their side. Mhm. That was my best bet. Are you going >> [snorts] >> I said I was laying down there besides Hoyt. >> [snorts] >> So, what happened to Hoyt? Is everybody talking out there, you know, even afterwards, I mean the whole reason And they were even saying that during the the reason those dudes came is Hoyt was supposed to rob them. So, [snorts] this this is what they were talking about? >> Yes, this is what they Where were you when they were talking when they were talking about it? I was sitting in your living room. You were sitting? >> I was sitting. I mean, I was there in the living room. I mean, they were all talking amongst each Is that when you were on the You weren't getting at this point? Yes. Okay. But where was Hoyt when they were talking about this? >> [music] >> They were talking about the When they were talking about Hoyt trying to rob them, where was Hoyt? And they were talking about using him as a decoy. He was on the floor. He was on the floor? I mean, as soon as they as soon as he basically got in there uh within 30 seconds of him being in there, 20 seconds of him being in there, me being in there also, um they just attacked him immediately. All you can hear is him screaming as they chased him around the living room. Okay. Was Hoyt still screaming when they were talking about Hoyt trying to rob them? Like they started talking about Hoyt. I thought I heard him saying something. >> [snorts] >> So, what happened to Hoyt? They attacked him. >> [sighs and gasps] >> Hoyt was basically running around, you know, trying to do whatever he can, screaming hard. And they got Mhm. >> [clears throat] >> Hoyt had fallen down on the ground. I'm already down on the ground. I can look because they cuz I see him this way, and I'm facing I can Hoyt's a few feet away. I can see him. I mean, I can see everything. You know, then then And um I was I was kind of dizzy, I don't know. But I they're they're >> [snorts and gasps] >> They Hoyt I mean, I I couldn't see cuz I my head wasn't like this the whole time as I'm laying down. So, I wasn't like that, you know. To be honest with you, I didn't want to I wanted to see as little as possible. Mhm. And uh >> [laughter] >> Hoyt grabbed the gun from Patrick. Hoyt grabbed What kind of What kind of gun did Patrick have? Was it big or small? It was a big It wasn't a handgun. I I didn't really see it. To be honest, but it was a gun. So, he grabbed Patrick's gun? >> Patrick's gun, and it went off. Boom. And that's how I heard everything. And you know, when everybody heard that, they were just boom, you know, kind of spooked. And I I thought I heard someone say I mean I want to say it was Who said that right there? I want to say it was Hoyt. All right. He said I can't move. He just kind of like And that was that was the last I heard of him. The last the last [snorts] voice I heard from Hoyt. Peter appeared disturbed, like someone who had just stared into something truly horrifying. Witnessing his friend's death was surely his worst nightmare, and officers now needed to understand exactly what had happened to them. They didn't plan on We didn't plan to I Pete, you came to the wrong place at the wrong time. That's what they told you? Who told you that? Paige. Paige said that? Paige just said that. And they said you know, as they went on throughout the rest of the you know, the night as they're you know, cleaning, doing whatever they're doing, trying to wash away whatever evidence or whatever they're trying to do. >> [clears throat] >> I just was like I was just like this like >> [panting] >> wrong place, wrong time to catch them right. So, what were they cleaning up? They were cleaning I seen the girl. The They were they were Paige's Paige's girlfriend They carried and then were selling her. I'm sorry. I've been up for I don't know how long I've been doing this for heaven's She was cleaning I seen I seen her cleaning the blood >> [snorts] >> off the wall. I don't know if she had anything part of it, but to be honest, I mean, I would think that she would be a lure. Why not? Cuz Hoyt always had a weakness for women. Mhm. He loves his girls, you know. Okay. So, maybe she could have lured him in there. She talked to him. Where did they bring Hoyt? And I think that was like the bait or something. Like you know, I was just you know, innocent bystander type like, "Okay, we'll we'll just use him." Mhm. Wrong place, wrong time. Okay. Paige's girlfriend's cleaning blood off the wall. What did they do with Hoyt? Um >> [clears throat] >> body stayed there for a while. For a little bit until they were They were just putting like all kinds of They were just wrapped up in like either towels, you know, rugs, like a little white clear tarp. Just [snorts] [clears throat] whatever they could find really. He stayed there for a while as they discussed, you know, what they were going to do. And they kept asking me, "Peter, say anything, are you? Peter, say anything, are you?" And uh hooked up [clears throat] Hoyt to the rope. Say nothing. Say nothing, man. You You know what I'm saying? Yeah. I didn't think it didn't matter anyway. I didn't think I was going to make it. I didn't think I was dead. Mhm. I said, "This is it, man. This is I'm done." >> [snorts] >> And they're like I said, "Do you know what happened?" I was like, >> [clears throat] >> You know, that's the key, survival. And whatever you can do to survive, do it. And that's what I did. They're talking about going to Patrick was talking about "Hey, I got a friend that we can go to. He's got plenty of plenty of land, you know, out there in the boonies." And they were going to let us go. And when I see my soul, I think my parents' house, you know, cuz it's not too far away. Kind of like on the outskirts, but we live My parents about this house, he car me there. Mhm. And I was nauseous. You know, I had told you guys earlier that I was being a I was like, you know, if I was saying anything anything that would help me like I'll give you all give you all money. I'll give you whatever. They had already took all my money out my pocket. They took my phones. They took everything my wallet, my driver's license. That's what they said. They continued to say that they were like, "We know where you live. We know your parents and we will kill you and your family if you say anything." That's exactly what they said. And my mom is my world. Mhm. >> [snorts] >> So, they stop anywhere? Do they go to Jefferson County or Monticello or We got to I ended up I don't know I don't know if they but sitting there saying like I told them I'd give them money. This is already in the night after all this after all this all frantic. And he said like during the car ride as we're going down 90, he's like, "I'll take you up on that." I was like, "What?" He goes, "Bring some Bring How much money you going to bring me?" I said, "Huh?" I got about five $350 in here or something, you know, just Yeah, something. I ran to you. And uh He just got You You agreed. And the whole thing in the back of my head I was like I was hoping they'd say I hope they don't say that's that they were going to do the body thing. And I was hoping they don't go do that first because I'm figuring if they're going to do it they're going to kill me. They're going to kill me. That's what they're going to do. And so that's what I have in fear. And uh And I just said, "Park right here." Like he he goes around about because you got a house as it goes around to the and then that as it goes straight into the street back to Walden. And I knew [snorts] that there was a house right here that where they couldn't like if I they stopped right here I knew they couldn't really see me go to my actual house. And uh they just parked right there. He's like, "You going to go get it?" I was like, "Yeah, man. I'll go get it." He said, "You got 5 minutes. You better be back in 5 minutes." And so they got out the car. I walked slowly got out again or something, you know, cuz I walked to the different door. And they can't see after so long. As soon as I knew they couldn't see it run to my house and I knew it was right next door so I run. I'm beating on the door. >> [snorts] >> And my mom finally First I'm trying to knock cuz I didn't want I didn't know if they could hear from that. That's how scared I was. Like I didn't know if they could hear. And [snorts] eventually I could hear my mom like getting through getting through and coming to the door. And she came first. She said as she's opening I'm just like She'll tell you. I'm just like, "Get in. Please." Like I went inside and immediately first thing I do I don't take a piss. I don't even take a breath I don't take a breath of air. I Mom, and I'm trying to think how to say it what to say like this is what happened. And I give it all. And I told her everything. And but as I'm telling her she's like in the process she's like calling 911. And she's like, "Yeah, call them." You know, I yeah, I said that and then she's talking to the officer I guess told them over the phone that this is serious, man. Those dudes have guns. They They just You know, I mean what dude just The way Peter survived was shocking but sadly his friend didn't share the same fate. Peter then described the five attackers to the police and officers were able to track them down and arrest them. >> [music] >> During questioning Paige's statements stood out from the rest and her coldness was truly chilling. Hey baby, how you doing? Hey I thought I seen you or something. You saw me? Yeah. Hey, you don't just take your little This is all Take your little man. We're getting a homicide unit for you. You know, we'll talk to you about everything from why you're here. Okay. All right. First thing um I need [music] to stress to you is that um now the time to be completely honest about everything. Yeah, okay. Have you ever been arrested before? Yes. What were you arrested for? Um my possession with controlled substance. That was like um almost 10 years ago. Okay. Uh my most recent arrest was battery and a VOP. Okay. Do you know what kind of investigation we're doing now? Uh I guess. I believe so. Okay, you realize this is a homicide investigation. So, [music] by not being truthful with us is going to can [music] hurt you greatly, okay? This is not a battery charge. This is not a possession charge. This is something that can affect you the rest of your life. This is something that I never thought I would ever So, [music] what I'm telling you is is the questions we ask you need to answer truthfully, honestly, [music] and tell us everything you know and not worry about hiding something for somebody else because they're going to be talked to as well. I said don't tell us something that's not true and then we go find out that what you just told us was a lie because now that gets you involved even more Right. than what you are. Okay, right now you need to be looking out for yourself. I don't know what kind of future you want but um you sit here and lie to us is not going to be a good one. Right. All right? How old are you, Paige? 28. Do you have kids? Yes. Okay. How many kids do you have? Well, obviously you know what we're going to talk to you about. Yeah. So, why don't you just let me just let you talk and tell us um from the beginning that day like what went down. See yeah. Okay. I'm going to be completely honest. I know I from what told me to be completely honest I would be completely honest because I know for a fact that I I never thought what I I did could be charges against me because of the fact that I was there and I did not I did not call. Mhm. And even though I wanted to do but I was scared. I was scared. I was scared. Okay. And And [clears throat] the guy that Yeah, that's who I was was actually a friend of mine. So, I was was a friend of mine. Um But see I don't want to I know. Let's start with Monday night. Can you remember Monday night? Wait. Wait, um he came by to give me like Am I going to get Am I incriminating myself by saying anything? You're a witness right now, okay? Yeah. Okay. Um because I Listen, we're not We're not worried about incriminating yourself. about that. Okay. Yeah. That's it. I was going to purchase some some painkillers or something. He's a He's a friend of mine. Um he brought someone that I don't I don't know. I don't know this guy. I don't know who he had brought with him. How did you arrange him him for him to come over to buy whatever you were going to buy from him? I arranged it by talking to Hoyte. Um what was just said I didn't know if he was going to bring bring bring what the painkillers with him or if I was going to go go with him to go get some. I had no idea. So, I'm talking about you talked to him on a on a cell phone or how did you talk to him about it? Yes. Okay. So, I mean a text or a phone call? Um text. Okay. Paige acted as if she cared for the victim, even claiming that Hoyte was a friend and shedding tears over his death. But little did she know investigators already had everything they needed and her dramatic performance was about to fall apart. So, he was supposed to be simple, quick, and easy. Wait. Ah. I know it's hard for me to talk about cuz we're really good friends and family. So, that's going to make like you would say like not scum bag but like I know he's way too far in all time, you know, but he [music] was really sweet to me. He was really sweet to me. Who was all there when he came in? >> [snorts] >> Well, they weren't supposed They weren't Well, Hoyte was in it. Paige but they came back when they were supposed to come. He wasn't supposed to be in that so soon. I thought it was going to be gone longer cuz he didn't want me to get these painkillers or whatever. He doesn't like He doesn't like me doing them and so it was kind of >> [music] >> something that I didn't want him to be there for. You know, um she doesn't like that you know, I do them sometimes. So, um But he came back earlier than I expected [music] and um So, anyway, >> [snorts] >> I told I told him and his friends to just [music] like kind of I don't know. Just let me do it. Just I told him because he doesn't like me doing it at all. >> [music] >> He found out that he was a bit upset that I was going to do it all but whatever. So, there was Biggy, Patrick, and was that it? No, Biggy, Patrick, Paige. Paige was in too. He came back Okay. but [music] I didn't know he was going to collapse so soon. Um Anybody else? Paige and [music] Biggy's Biggy's boyfriend. Stan. Who? Stan. Stan. Yeah, y'all probably don't even have all that information I have. Because I'm sure they don't want me to tell y'all that happened. What I do know for a fact is that like maybe some wrong things were done. Um I'm going to tell you that's a wrong fact. I saw the whole thing happen. And [laughter] when you see someone hurt someone like that, you can tell their intentions are not good. You can tell people that are just like, "Yeah, calm down." They're just like, "Okay." Like it felt like it felt like we were rather than attention they we were going to get robbed from them. Um it's how it felt like kind of because he brought some other guy that we didn't know ahead of time. Like it was supposed to just be Hoyte. Hoyte was the only one that was supposed to be over. You know, it was only one. one that was physical. What he was physical with. He never said he was going to bring people. According to Paige, Hoyt was sweet, but Peter believed Paige had actually lured Hoyt to her home. She was an active part of the plan and the officers knew it. Later, it was confirmed that the reason for the attack was to rob Hoyt during the exchange of the painkillers. Because Paige had a past relationship with the victim, she was used to attract him. How it happened should not have happened. It was kind of supposed to be a low-key thing. Like I was just going to just switch out with Hoyt really quick. Like, you know, do a little transaction with him. Like that's that's what my intentions were. It was to do a little quick transaction. So Okay. Show you what. Who was outside? Who stayed outside? I'm not exactly sure. It's one of >> [music] >> one of the the little I think started with a P. One of the the little guys. Is this the little short guy you're talking about? He starts with a P. Yeah, I think it starts with a P. Okay. Um but he was he he did not mean to get that. Like he was put in a situation that he didn't want to be there. All I know what happened. It I did It went really fast, but Paige held [music] held Pete to the ground. He did He held Pete to the ground. Um Yeah, that's his name. It was Pete Pete Pete. Yeah, that was his name. Okay. I got so quick right there. Pete was his name. [music] Okay. No, no, no, no. Some people ask me on point. Okay. I don't always know. Okay. So Paige held Pete to the ground. >> Yeah, and he said, "Pete, everything's going to be fine. Just [music] just Just keep your hands on your like Was Was this in the house? Yeah, he said, "Pete, yeah." >> [music] >> In the house. This was after the whole time I don't know. I'm all over the place about it cuz I This is the first time Okay. So Okay, let's go let's start here. Hoyt came up. Y'all were going to do an exchange. Yeah, Hoyt came up and with Pete. Okay. >> And then some other people. I mean White guys, black guys? Um Girls? There's not No girls. There's no girls. [music] Okay. Okay. There's no girls. Okay, so he comes up with the other people. You don't know who they are. >> Yeah, but some of them were going to >> [music] >> They were in He was trying to invite Hoyt trying to invite his friends to come in and stuff and they didn't want to or something and he said, "Fine, go sit in the car or whatever." Okay. So okay. I don't know. It's just It's just weird. Hoyt started going crazy. Stan was grabbing him all over the place and he was literally smearing blood and soul Hoyt's hair hair like dangling or something and they're trying to get him to stop. But then Hoyt was beating him. He was like jumping around all over the place and then the next thing you know, I hear gunshots. >> [gasps] >> And I don't know what to do. I didn't think that they had a gun at all, but they did and then that happened to Pete. >> [snorts] >> I wanted to I wanted to go. I wanted to go the whole time and I was so scared. I was scared. Paige continued to act like she was a victim and didn't know that any of this would happen. She kept pointing the finger at the men who were in the house with her thinking it would take her off the investigator's radar. Who had the gun? I don't know. I don't know. Gun. I don't I don't know who had the gun. He had a big gun. He had a big gun. And he shot him. He shot him. Do you know where he shot? Yes, because I was I wanted to try to save his life. I told him he needed to call the cops. We needed to call the cops. My phone doesn't work. It does not work. I was like, "We need to call the cops." He said it. Like, "You did it. It's fine." >> [laughter] >> And then then he was I had to go. I had to go. I did not want to be there anymore. I didn't even I didn't even look at him. I don't want to be there. Pete cuz I don't want to be there. Where did Where did he get shot at? I know he said his ear was dangling. He held his ear and he got There's nothing There's nothing I can do cuz he was already gone like so quick. According to Paige, she wanted to help Hoyt, but her friend Harley told a very different story. When someone suggested calling an ambulance, Paige shut the idea down and just stood there watching him pass away. Moments later, the truth of what Hoyt faced became clear. He had been brutally beaten with a hammer and then shot by the group. Was he standing? Was he on his knees? Was he laying down? >> fighting like crazy. Like when I say someone using somebody getting hurt like that fights like crazy, you know, usually you would lay down and you're like, "Please don't shoot me. Please don't shoot me." Hoyt did not do that. Hoyt was Hoyt. All over the place. Like honestly, he was he he was a fight. It was fighting back and forth. Who was he fighting with? >> [snorts] >> Stan Honestly, I don't really All I know is Paige was with Pete trying to hold Pete down. Um And Stan, David, and Pat were the ones that were over there. They were trying to hold Hoyt down and and uh And then all of a sudden you hear the gun go off. And I've never hated anything ever. I'm telling you it's my fault. If I hadn't wanted him to get >> [laughter] >> And then >> [gasps] >> And then Pete, there is none of that would ever happen. It's my fault. It's my fault. I guarantee you once he messed his ear up, I think that's whenever Hoyt really [music] started going crazy. I mean, I have my ear trouble all over the world too. But it looked like his ear was dangling and there was just blood going everywhere and I was just standing there saying, "Stop. Stop." So But were they fighting with just their hands or I didn't see any No, no, no, no, no. Nothing with hands. What was they fighting No hands. No, no, no. But there's no hands. There's no possible way they could have a way in. There was just There was guns. There was just guns. I don't know. Investigators had heard enough of her nonsense, but they kept playing along pretending not to see the disturbing darkness she carried inside. I didn't know. No. No. No, no, no. I'm trying to be honest with Hoyt, and I We appreciate that. >> We were there Stan's girlfriend that was there saying, And and that's why you're here talking to us about it, right? [snorts] Because it's not right what happened to Hoyt. Absolutely. And And that's all. You're You No, you're not. I I just need Call people for who they really were at that specific moment. You can tell who's not right in the head. I promise you that I have never Stan's fault, honestly. I swear to God. I have never ever would ever think that I would ever be in a situation like that ever in my life. And I would You want to That's how you can read someone and how they really are. Mhm. In a situation like that which is I would not I would not want my worst enemy to have to witness or be in a situation like that because that is I can't [laughter] forget when that happened. Hoyt was Hoyt was He was a school bag. He was a gun to the him trying to do stuff with me cuz he's a lowered dog. Mhm. Not way, but he is the sweetest guy. He is really going freaking hard. He is the craziest heart ever. And So [snorts] that never happened to him. Should never happen to anybody. I didn't know what to do. I didn't know what to do. Hoyt I had to trust Hoyt with my life. I feel like he Mhm. >> [clears throat] >> Hey Paige, before we go any further, you're not under arrest. Understand? Okay? Right now, you are a witness in this, but I do want you to read you your rights just so you understand your rights. You're not under arrest, okay? But you need to know your rights, okay? All right. >> to [clears throat] speak to a lawyer. Should I speak to a lawyer? Should I speak to a lawyer? Should I speak to a lawyer? I don't know how these things work. It's your choice if you want to speak to a lawyer or not. Well, let let Detective Warren read you these rights [music] and then Okay. Okay. Just go from there. You have the right to remain silent. Anything [music] you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to talk to a lawyer at this time and have a lawyer present with you during questioning. >> [music] >> If you cannot afford to hire a lawyer, one will be appointed for you before any questioning if you wish. You can decide at any time to exercise these rights and not answer any questions or make any statements. Do you understand the rights that I read to you? I did. Does that mean that everything I just said does that count anymore cuz I said everything right right? Well, you're not under arrest. Yeah, you're not under arrest or anything. [music] Um basically, what you're going to do if you'll just initial here that I read these to you and you can reread them if you like and read the statement right here. Honestly, I'm like worn out now. That was really hard. I have not thought about that night since it happened. [music] I was trying to pretend it didn't. It's why me and Paige were late. Each other because we were both freaking out. Read this right here. We had no idea. We had no idea. >> [snorts] >> With those rights in mind, do you want to continue to talk to us? We just We just need to get all sides of this story. After the interrogation, Paige said she wanted to contact a lawyer. At trial, she repeated her story, claiming she had no idea any of that would happen. But in the end, the jury didn't believe her, and she was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Moving on to the next case, where an attempt to help a neighbor escalated into [music] a fatal confrontation. And y'all didn't have any interaction with them? No. This is what I want to show you. Were your neighbors involved in any of this? On May 13th, 2016, in Louisville, Kentucky, Jennifer Cain was supposed to show up at her new job by noon. When a friend noticed she wasn't answering any calls, he went to her apartment to check on her. And what he found inside was truly horrifying. Jennifer was lying on the floor with three gunshot wounds, and her partner, Darrell Wilson, had been shot in [music] the head. Miraculously, he was still breathing. He was rushed to the hospital, and a month later, finally told police who was responsible, their neighbors, Brian Greenwell and Jennifer Cain. Brian was brought in for questioning without realizing Darrell had survived, initially assuming the police were there for an unrelated charge. Hey Brian, what's happening, man? What's happening, man? Let us take the rights. Take the paperwork. And sorry it took me a little while to get over here. I was uh finishing up talking to Jody. >> [music] >> Jody? Mhm. How's she doing? She's a little upset. About what? You know, that's [clears throat] what we're here talking about. She's a little upset. Um So, I'll tell you that she said she I'm trying to remember her exact words, but it was more along the lines of "I don't want him to tell him. I don't want him to be scared." And I >> [music] >> And to talk to us. Anything else on along that? Cuz [clears throat] I wouldn't I want to go talk to him. I said, "I can't let you do that." I said, "I may be able to let you do a recorded statement or write a note, but so, did she do one of them?" I have a recording. I also have another recording that I'd like you to view, as well. But I I can't ask you any questions yet though, >> [music] >> because you're in custody for something else. I don't know. I know it's some kind of dope charge. I know you got some stuff there. So, before I actually ask you anything, or tell you, or show you anything, I need to read you your rights. You had those read before, correct? No. You've never had your rights read? No. Okay. Let's go through this. I had them read to me when I was younger. Yeah. I mean, you know what I'm talking about. Okay. Well, I want to go through this cuz let me say And I brought a picture of your kiddos. I gave I gave her I gave her a picture of them, too. I don't want to worry you at this time. You understand and know what I'm doing. No promises [music] or threats have been made to me, and no pressure or coercion of any kind has been used against you. You understand what coercion means, right? Okay. Um And I'm guessing you might have an idea of what You don't have an idea of what what you might want to talk to me about, or what I want to talk to you about. Okay. And And it has to do with the apartment you guys used to live over on Shelby Street. Now, well, [clears throat] yeah, man. Does that ring a bell, that incident? Okay. >> [music] >> What do you know about that incident? As far as I know, they was they was supposed to been us, far as my understanding. Cuz the guy, Terry, that uh he was supposed to send somebody over here to talk to us, or something like [music] that. I don't know. Cuz they used to have deals I mean, I know the guy, too, you know. They used to have [music] dealings or some something like that. I'm not even sure if it's him, you know what I'm saying? I'm just going by what I've heard. That he got ripped off for some dope a few [music] times. He got upset about it, and the only reason why he wouldn't come confront her by herself, you know what I'm saying? Cuz of me. Well, she never ripped him off for no dope, anyways. >> [music] >> It wasn't her. No, it was So, this was It was geared towards Jody, is what you're telling me? Yes. And far as I know, that somebody was supposed to [music] send some people from Chicago, some black dudes. He said, "It's not about the money now. It's not about the dope. It's about the principle." And he Terry Payne told me this. And I told him, I said, "Well, you better go back and tell him your rights and I've got no money. It's not about no principle or anything like that. I'm worried about my fiance, man. That bothers me, you know what I'm saying? I'm involved." And he said, "Well, sorry, too late. The call was been made that uh some people from where he says New Orleans, or something like that. Louisiana's up here looking for him." Initially, the investigator acted as if the interrogation was only about a possession charge and a traffic violation Jody had. Up to that point, Brian wasn't worried about his neighbors. He truly believed both of them were deceased, but he had no idea that the truth was about to surface, and everything he thought he knew was about to fall apart. Did Did you know those neighbors, or did you know both of them? I don't know. You ever saw them before? Yeah, we used to see them. Hey, if I showed you a picture of them, would you know who they are? That Pretty sure Okay. Yeah. I think Yeah, that was her. That other guy. Now, this is a little bit older picture. I think he had probably just gotten out of jail. His hair may have been a lot longer. Mhm. Yeah. If you put long hair on him, looks like him. And y'all didn't have any interaction with them? No, other than uh them passing in the through the hallways. What do you actually know about what happened over there? What have you heard? What do you know? I just heard that somebody got shot at at Jody's. And then we stayed away for a couple days, so that's when I found out that supposedly they was there for her and us, you know what I'm saying? That it was supposed to been us. So, I was like, you know, I'm we made a decision, you know, what I'm saying? Stay away for a couple days, cuz [music] I mean, hell And you know there was two victims there. Do you know that? Not both of those two people were shot. No, it's just They told me it was just the the lady. Well, so they were And uh This is what I want to show you. >> [clears throat] >> He didn't die. Do you remember Do you know your neighbors who live there? In this apartment? Do you know who they were? If I showed you a picture of them, would you know who they were? Would you know who they were? Yeah. Were your neighbors involved in any of this? Yes. Do you recognize her? Is that Jody? Is that your neighbor? At this point, Brian finally realized what was going on. His performance had fallen apart, and the plan he thought would protect him was now collapsing right into the hands of the investigators. So. That's just the start of it. That I'm not going to finish it. No, I got a I've got a couple follow-ups here. Okay. When I showed Jody this, she lost it. She lost it like bawling and ran, broke [music] down. Let me guess. Said that we done it. She did? Well, you know, and before, you know, and I was going to tell you the same thing I told her. I said, "You all have some important things in front of you." I said, "Bad things happen to good people. Sometimes, [music] people get put into situations, and they didn't know what was planned." Um I believe that's what happened here. I don't believe there was malicious intent going in. I think it escalated and went bad. And I told her I wanted to help her try to get to the good side of this, to not paint her into a negative light on it. And I said I I told her I said, "I will give you that same [music] opportunity and tell you the same things." And I've told you both the exact same things. And that's how >> [music] >> I want to present it. I don't fool people, you know. I'll tell you what I got. The Fair enough. I mean, I've [music] got a living victim who puts you there. I've got Jody who says you were there. Now, I want to hear from you what in the world happened. Like I said, I think something went wrong. I don't think you got there on I want to hear the rest of it what Jody had to say. What Jody had to say? I don't have Jody on the video. Butch said you had her on a I have her on I have a recording. I just did it. I don't have it on a disk yet. I still have it on a actual recorder. Can I hear it? I don't know. Let me see if I can do that. I don't even know if I can do that. I mean it's on [music] it's on this recorder that's in my pocket right now. The same one that I'm I've been on right now. Well, let's find out if we can do that because I mean >> Is that going to change what No, man. I want to >> I'm not going to I'm not going to play it word for Yeah, well, you know, I'm not going to play it word for word so you can mirror your story off I don't know. No, I don't I don't I've been doing this for a long Yeah, I don't I don't expect you to do that either, but I would do like to know what she's saying what she's All right. I can give you the I can give you the details of I guess the general of what she said is that [music] And he goes on to say this as well that they were involved in a domestic situation. And apparently, you know, he might have been getting the best of her. She came over for help. You guys go back over to their apartment. It happened inside their apartment. Um you [music] said you guys intervened honestly on the good side of this to start with trying to help her out. And things went bad from there. Does that sound Is Is that a fair statement of how things may have occurred? No. I mean It's not. No, but I had no Yeah, I know these people. I don't know them personally. You know what I'm saying? I know them from that apartment. Yes, we did go over there. But that's it. I mean, hell, is she fingerprinted [music] the place? She found my fingerprints on the things as well. Walked in the room. Mhm. I [clears throat] picked some stuff up. You know, fingerprints everywhere. So, I was like I mean, other than that Brian tried to hear what Jody had said so he could mirror her story and outsmart the investigators. He wanted to repeat her version word for word. Fortunately, the detective didn't fall for it. I know right now you're trying to figure out where to go with this cuz Yeah, don't want you to start digging yourself a hole. No, what you want me to do is commit, you know what I'm saying? Oh, I don't need you to. I don't need you to. I've got, you know, and I've got Jody's statement. I've got enough to walk out of this room right now. What I'm trying to do is give you an opportunity to do the same thing that she did which is go at it at the angle we were trying to help and things went bad. It's a whole lot better than We mean it's just not giving a statement and me knowing off of him. I mean, you think if I put a guy who's paralyzed from the neck down on a ventilator with an interview like this up to 12 people on a jury, they're not going to sympathize with him instead of you. I'll take that all day long twice on Sunday. Well, I don't you know I I I'm I'm Yeah, [laughter] I agree with this. You know, I'm I'm looking at it too. I'm looking at it too. I'm like, yeah, I mean, as it stands right now, I mean, regardless of what I say I'm in this situation. I'm trying to say that there is a little bit of an out here to make it better on you. To not make it look like I don't believe you're a cold-blooded No, I don't believe that at all. Nothing suggests that to me. I think you're a smart guy and I think you got involved in a situation that you probably shouldn't have. But not to say you shouldn't not that you shouldn't help somebody out, but I think she went bad real quick. And I don't think you anybody should be judged on just one thing alone. There's a whole series of events that happened here to get to basically where we are right now. And I just want you to, you know think about a lot of different things and I know I've thrown a lot at you at one time. You know. And I I I can't can't say I understand where you're at right now because I haven't been there, but I can empathize with you. I do this every time. What do you mean you do this every time? I always try to protect everybody. You shut that recorder off for a minute. I got to ask you a question. You guys there? Can you hear me or not? Why you got me in this room recorded, right? I don't know about this room cuz this is a corrections room, so I'd have to say, you know, >> [music] >> I don't know. What happens if I go I mean, cuz I know the story here. [music] You know what I'm saying? I know the whole thing what happened. How can I get Jody off of all this? I mean, I think I think she's the least [music] culpable of I mean, if anything happened, you know, I think she was just there. Um And what he says and what she says really jive in line with the support. They support each other in their statements. Um But I mean, it's honestly just going [music] through the story and I think I know the story. If I told you the story, it wouldn't sound anything like >> [music] >> what I started it off as. A domestic thing that you guys got involved in. You end up in a fight with them with a gun. It goes off and I can't tell you any more than that cuz that's where, >> [music] >> you know And by any chance, does that seem like a story that of what may have happened? Yeah. As the evidence came to light, Brian realized it was over for him, but he still wanted to protect Jody from the situation even though she had witnessed it and fled the scene with him making her partly responsible as well. Well, uh Regardless of what happened, I mean, y'all can't I mean No, tell me I mean, I think I know what you're trying to get out and that's to me you don't want anything to happen to Jody on this. Does that sound about right? Yeah. And I really think that's going to depend on a lot about what we talk about what you tell me on this. I think it I think I can minimize her involvement. Minimize it. Well, I mean, she is there. I mean, have you ever heard Have you ever heard about uh doing a bank robbery? Yeah. You're the you're the robber and you go in and rob the store. I'm just the driver. We both get in a car chase and get caught down the way. You know what charge did I get? Accessory. And what charge did you get? The robbery. And I still get the robbery. I mean, she's there with you. So, she is a complete You know, she is complicit in this. And I'm not calling her, you know, she didn't There was nothing done on her behalf to help or stay or call or anything. So, that's that's her a little bit of a problem, but her involvement is minimal. Yes. Kind of she did try to >> [snorts] >> What did she try to do? Try to help. After they were Mhm. What did she do? I mean, this helps her. I mean, she was like talk about it. Just We talked about it all in the second. You called me. I called you back. You know, I talked to some other people. I mean, I know what's been bothering you. Everybody [music] said that you actually did it for you. It's really bothering you. So, it's been noticeable to other people. You can take that weight off. Throw it on me. Get it off your shoulder, [music] man. I mean, yeah, I ain't going to try to hit you with no aggravating or nothing. No, there's no aggravating circumstances. I'm going to try to get this done as quick as possible. Yeah. Cuz I'm going to be honest with you. I can't sit in that jail. [music] I understand. Jody didn't have nothing to do with it. She did try to get help and her. I mean, they I tried to help. >> [clears throat] >> Brian was speechless as the reality sank in, but he soon revealed what had happened that day. She come over and she said, "He's over beating me." So, [music] we walked over. We didn't even walk in the apartment at [snorts] first. And I I was like, you know "What's going on?" Jody didn't mean to go over [music] there at first. She was like, "We can go over there and talk to this guy." woman?" I said, "Yeah, you know." So, I walked over. Jody was [music] over there braiding. I'm a customer. I'm a customer. All three of us was standing outside. Even the girl [music] was standing outside. You know what I'm saying? I was like, "What is going on? Leave or come over here and do something." You know what [music] I'm saying? It's If you want to leave, go and call the cops. She went back inside. He grabbed a hold of her or something like that. And that's Jody was like, you [music] know, "You got to help her." Cuz I guess he hurt her. One of these or something like that. So, I walked in there and I separated them and this and that. And that's when To be honest with you, I don't even I can't even remember it. How the gun [music] came into play, for real. Well, we started uh kind of wrestling around [music] and So, the gun went off. And then it went off again. And then that's How many times do you think it went went off? Honestly, man, I don't even know. Cuz I was I mean, I was I blacked out or something like that. I don't know. But that's like I'm guessing two or three times. Three, something like that. I remember hearing three guns. With you and which one you first? No. Honestly, but I don't I mean, cuz I was just like I freaked out. I was like, man, I'm over here to help somebody. This happens. I think the I know it went off once. I think it was CJ first. I'm not for sure. And then me and him was still struggling and then it went off again. I do remember that. And that's when he fell on the bed and I I didn't know I mean, I didn't know what to do. I mean, I went over I didn't like I said, it [music] wasn't our intention to go over there to do And Alice was [snorts] can't do that in one game. Brian's and Jody's stories matched. They had tried to help, but it had escalated into an altercation with their neighbors. Still, the investigator wanted more details, so he continued pressing Brian. Jody was like, you know, Jody didn't know he didn't even want to know what to do. She was like, "Let's call the cops." And that's when we I mean, cuz like you said, we went over there with the intentions of [music] help. Not hurting somebody. You know? And she never Jody never entered the apartment whatsoever, as far as I know of. You think she told me that she didn't She said she got She didn't go into the room that you guys were in, which is the back [music] bedroom. But she said she made it into the apartment. You said she tried to help him afterwards, so I mean, she was like, I mean, if she It doesn't matter to me. If she came in, that's figured That's 50/50. If she came in, that's fine. It's not That doesn't get you in trouble. That makes you a normal human being that wants to come in and maybe try to help. Yeah, man. We was both, you know what I'm saying? She was like, you know what I'm saying? Well, actually, I was kind of like I was standing. I don't [music] turned around and looked at her at the door. And I was like, "What do I do?" You know? So, I was like I didn't know. And I still I mean, [music] until this day, I still can't tell you exactly from start [music] to finish what happened. You know what I'm saying? I just know that I was the [music] one standing in the room while both of them was laying there. And Jody was like, you know, "Are you checking [music] his body? Is he still breathing? Are they So, >> [music] >> whatever, you know what I'm saying? And I was like, "Well, I don't know what I mean, what do How do you check to see if somebody's I don't know nothing. It's a better natural situation. [music] Is there anybody else there with you guys? Nobody else. Okay. I know you >> [music] >> I know this happened in the back bedroom. Were they fighting in the back bedroom and you got in the middle of her or did, you know, [music] you trying to you and him got into a fight in the back bedroom? I just want to be clear about it. Well, they was fighting. Arguing? I mean, we was all standing outside in the You ever have a physical fight, not arguing? >> [music] >> Yeah, they were talking about physical fight. And I was [snorts] like, you know, That's when Jody said, "Brian, you got to help her." That's when I went went in there. And everything just [music] happened so fast, and We got her arrested. [music] Well, I mean, she she did try to help him. I mean, I I didn't know what to do to help him. I mean, I just I freaked out. I still freak out. Well, I'll tell you what, this whole thing this whole situation I mean, sucks. And I mean, I was right. Was I not right from the minute I came in here and said how things went? Honestly, yeah. You know? And I still believe, you know, that happens to good people all the time. But uh if this series [snorts] of events doesn't paint you out to be a cold-blooded, calculated, I don't give a I mean, it happened. Yeah, there's nothing we can do about that now. But the way that we have presented it, as you coming over to help, you know? >> [snorts] >> There's a big difference. It I mean, Greg, I'm wrong. Wouldn't you see a big difference between somebody that doesn't give a and coming over there and and and just people as opposed to somebody who was there for a purpose. And I can confirm that purpose was there was a domestic fight going on. And you get over there and she goes back. Yeah. There's a big difference there. Yeah, that's a big difference. In the end, Brian was found guilty of murder, possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, attempted murder, and tampering with evidence. He was sentenced to [music] life in prison. In the next case, a man tried to stay off the police's radar after shooting two men, but the weight of his own actions became too much to bear, especially after discovering that one of his victims had survived. [music] >> And you know Troy's still alive. Mhm. And he's talking. Okay. So, he's going to give us a version. Well, good. Okay. Well, yours is the only story not making sense. Everybody else is somewhat close to each other, but yours is way off and left on the field. Just >> I guess I was the one doing all this stuff. I don't know. God damn Jesus, God, get up. On June 3rd, 2018, a couple driving from Florida to Alabama made a horrifying discovery. On the side of the road lay 49-year-old Troy Boatwell, shot in the head and struggling to stay alive. [music] Not far from there, investigators found another grim scene. A car half submerged in a nearby creek. Inside was Dalton Davis, who had also been shot and was unfortunately dead. While being rushed to the hospital, Troy told officers what had happened, pointing the finger at Christopher Allen Stacey, with whom he had gotten into an argument earlier that day. Chris's son, Logan Stacey, was also involved in the incident. Chris's ex-wife, Jessica, and Logan's girlfriend, Alexis, Troy's niece, were standing together nearby while the shooting occurred. According to Troy, it was Chris who shot both him and Dalton. With this information, authorities began preparing to arrest Chris, [music] carefully keeping Troy's survival a secret. I'm Investigator Worth, Investigator Preston. Okay. Okay. But before we start, let me get your information. Okay. Before we get started, read your rights, okay? And if you wish to speak with me and give me your side of the story, just sign there for me. Okay. Mr. Stacey, if you just want to start from the beginning and just tell me what happened. Um well, we were on We was taking Mississippi. We was going to Texas to work. I'm taking my my son and um my ex-wife [music] and his girlfriend was going to Mississippi. Let's start out with Who's your son? Uh Logan. Okay. Who's your ex-wife? >> Uh Jessica. And who's your My son is uh Alexis. Alexis is your son's girlfriend? Okay. All right. We're in We're on >> [music] >> We get to Mississippi and we I was starting late, so we stayed at the um Microtel Inn. And we checked out, but when we got there, the um pre-trial release forms that I got for him to go to work with me. He left them at the house. So we had to come back and get the paperwork. Well, I don't know we get there by about 9:00, somewhere around 9:00. And um As far as that like I said it watched movies and I was laid down and I said um I tried to get her to race or like that. As far as the day is or like I said and then you get up and Um Alexis said something about her uncle's house getting raided or something. And um As far as that that's all I know really as far as that. Sleeping wise, you know. Okay, do you know that Troy was Yeah, when when he told me I did. >> Okay. Do you know that Dalton Do you know Dalton? Okay, he was Okay. And you're the last [music] person that I'm talking to. Do you understand that? >> Yes, ma'am. Okay. So I've gotten stories from everybody that was there. >> Yes, ma'am. Okay. And this I don't know what happened is not going to work. >> Oh, yes, ma'am. >> It's not going to work. >> So that's that's all I know really. You've been identified as the person that Dalton and Troy. Are you for real? >> I'm for real. Okay. So either you can give me your version of the truth [music] or you can give me a version of lies. That's on you. Yes, ma'am. But I've already gotten the story from everybody else. So right now you're starting out with lies. >> Yes, ma'am. I'm just Just be honest. Look, we need to understand what happened and why. >> I was taking my family away because >> Hold on a minute now. Just understand what I'm going to tell you, okay? That you're you're in a significant spot right here, okay? So what you need to do is you need to make us understand what happened, exactly what happened and why. Okay? So just just relax, okay? I know you're nervous and all right? The investigators went straight to the point, showing no softness and revealing everything they knew. As the questioning continued, Christopher grew increasingly anxious and nervous, clearly aware of the gravity of his actions. I'm just going I'm just trying to get my family away because all this stuff that was going on. And um that's why we come back to settle in. I said I wouldn't plan on nobody showing up. And like I said We think I settled in and everything else. We were too tired to drive. We were going to leave out in the morning. I guess at that time um her truck pulled up. Um it was Troy and he had something to do with him. And that's where we already been at this. His own house getting raided. So I didn't know what was happening all night cuz he took my mama Like um I forget um She took some pictures of him doing drugs. He threatened to kill my baby and stuff like that. So We We went in here in the back cuz as far I didn't They didn't know that the girls were going with me, you know what I mean? And like I said to this day they didn't believe me. I mean we went with me and my son getting hit in the back. They didn't know what I mean but But then he come inside and I guess he They would do drugs and stuff. Um He started getting very hostile and stuff. So Um everything else, you know. At that time he started threatening my family talking about um And um he's going to kill my mama and um my mama and rape my kids and stuff like that. They didn't They didn't know that. And I guess that's why me and my son come out. But we We got him to What is it? Um I got him to fight him with a baseball bat. But like I said he had him and his baseball bat. And um He swung it and he didn't hit me but he hit the table and that's when I I don't know how many times I shot I just So he had a baseball bat? What did it look like? >> It's in the back of his truck. It's on the back of his truck? Okay. What What did it look like? >> It's just silver. Silver, yes, ma'am. It's like aluminum bat? >> Okay. I didn't know he had the bat until I come back. Like I said I was in the back. I just didn't know. And then like I said he Where did you have your pistol at? >> in my pocket. >> Which pocket? >> This pocket. Your left pocket? >> It was in my left hand. Your left hand? Okay. So all he had was a He had the bat. >> I don't Yes, ma'am. That's all I seen him. I don't know what Troy I guess cuz like I said when I come out of corner he had already started coming to me. Okay. So they were They were standing up there. They were standing up at the time you came around the corner. >> but they Like I said I don't want to be hurt or you know what I mean? Cuz it just I guess my drawing was off and stuff. So they What What kind of table was that? I don't really know. Like I said I don't really stay there but it's just a It's like a tall table about this tall. Is it wood, glass? >> Yes, ma'am. Wood. Okay. Did it break when you hit it with the bat? >> think it did. I just know it knocked some stuff off of it. Okay. Cuz this is the first we're hearing about a bat. What the Like I said There's a pet. I'm sorry I don't know but that's what I'm saying. That's the bat. So when when he with a bat He didn't know, ma'am. He did He swung at me. He didn't >> at you. Okay, he didn't hit you. He Like I said he hit the table. That's why I shot. Once and then swung at you or it was all at once? >> Yes, ma'am. It was all at once when he swung at me and he hit the table. Okay. And then [music] you grabbed your gun out of your pocket. >> Yes, ma'am. And then what did you do? >> I already started reaching whenever I seen him hit the bat. I already started reaching for my gun. Okay. And what happened? I shot. I just thought I Who? I don't know the boy's name. It wasn't Troy then. I shot him. Dalton first? >> that's it. Okay. The other boy, not Troy. How many times did you Do you know where you hit him? No. Okay. What about Troy? Do you know how many times you I don't know. I just I just wanted to get him real quick cuz he was going on me. So he was They were both standing up [music] and coming at you standing up. They weren't still sitting in the couch? No, ma'am. Okay. So when they're coming at you, you shot Do you know how many times total you >> know. How many did you have in your gun? I don't know. Seven, I think. Seven bullets total, one in the chamber? Yes, ma'am. Do you think you emptied it? >> No, ma'am. Okay. Where is the gun now? >> It's at my mama's house. Where is your mama's house? >> 145 miles drive. You took it over [snorts] there? >> Yes, ma'am. When did you take it over there? >> That morning. Right after? No, ma'am. That morning I didn't even leave out. I was trying to get my family out cuz it was We were worried about people retaliating against us and stuff. Chris's story was very different from what his son and wife, who were co-participants, had told. This was the first time the story about a silver bat came up. Investigators continued questioning the distressed man, hoping to get more information from him. All right. So after you them, do you think they're both I don't know cuz I mean it was just I just freaked out, you know what I mean? I don't cuz I don't know if they blamed us or blamed her cuz the house getting raided and stuff cuz you know my mama took them pictures and stuff. You know what I mean? I just I don't know a lot about him but I've heard about him at least. And he Like I said he tried to get my son and then we went Okay. So So they're both laying there, right? And then what happens? [music] I don't know. I just freaked out. I don't know. I just I was telling everybody to go and let go. We She was Alexis was like um I don't get it. She was like no we got to push. I just want I just tried to like throw everything and load them up in the >> Hang on. Hang on. Try to make clear thoughts, okay? Cuz you're all over the place right now. I need you to remember you know I'm trying. each part of what happened. So they're laying there, then what what is said in the group? I just tell everybody we We got to go. We got to go. We got to go. And so what? I get I get my son. It just takes me a little bit. And I just grabbed the um the little guy and I put him on Not Troy but the other guy. >> Yes, ma'am. Okay. >> And put him on the truck. Mhm. And um I had trouble with Troy. He was so big and I couldn't get him loaded up. So you load him up into which truck? >> Troy's truck. Troy's truck? Okay. And then who drives what truck? My My wife and my kids My son driving. Alexis said my my back my black truck and I drove Troy's truck. So you were in [music] Troy's truck? >> No. My son was in Troy's truck. I had him drive that truck. >> Okay. And then who was in your truck? Me and Jessica, you know, Alexis. >> [snorts] >> And then where did you guys go? We went to um Deer Creek Road. To what? Deer Creek Road. >> Deer Creek Road. Okay. Are you familiar with that area? Not really, ma'am. I just know there's a bridge and stuff down there. Yeah. And did you know there was like a creek or water or something? >> like I said I drove over there. I'm not really familiar with it. Is that your initial spot you thought of or No, ma'am. I didn't know what to do. Okay. So what were your What was your thought process? Where were you driving? I I thought that we went We went all the way past We got on the road and went down Steel Bridge Road. I didn't know what Like I said I just I just kept driving and driving. I was like And we went across Steel Bridge Road. I don't know what that road's called right there but it goes across and then you turn and you go back like toward Alabama line. Yeah. We made that sharp turn. We just kept going straight past the cotton gin. I don't know. I just kept going that way. I just trying to get as far away as I could. And then what? I thought about a little a little bridge right there on Deer Creek on Deer Run Road Deer Creek Road. That's why I took We went to Huntsville. What happened when you got there? I guess you roll it in the creek. I got them to throw it somewhere to get in the truck. Let's go. Did you think it was going to go under water? I didn't know. Did you know it was deep enough or anything? >> to say I didn't know. I was just trying to make it look like an accident so nobody come back on my family. So what did you do after that? Where did you go? We went to the store. I said we drive. What store? >> [snorts] >> Um the Medical Park Drive um at Shell station right there on Medical Park Drive. >> [snorts] >> And we went to the back home. Mhm. And then what was happening at home? I got I just went to bed cuz I couldn't deal with it. I covered the couch up cuz I couldn't look at it. Chris was notoriously nervous, sweating and fidgeting constantly. However, the investigators still had much more to get from him. So, when this morning, >> [snorts] >> what happened? I get everything cleaned up and stuff. Tell me everything. >> [snorts] >> I tried to open the couch myself, but I My son helped me open it. And I take and throw it Throw it out in the woods to get burned or something in there. I don't know. When did you burn Like how they couch. The couch? What else? Uh some towels and stuff we threw on the floor. Mhm. Is that Where's that bat at? On back of the truck. On the back of the truck? Okay. So, you didn't see him pull a knife. You just saw him with a bat. >> seen Troy with a knife. Everybody had a bat. I seen him coming toward me. My dad >> [snorts] >> told me he was going to grab me, but I pulled back and I had my gun in my hand. I said he's going to back Troy right there and grab him and I said that dude nervous was going to I don't know I don't even think I I didn't know what I didn't know what I mean. But I just didn't start shooting. And then like I said he just sit down. When he sit down on the couch they were like side by side. And then they they were still breathing, but I didn't know you know what I So, did you think they were still alive when you left or did you think they were I thought they were You thought they were Yeah, ma'am, cuz they they wouldn't move when we loaded them up. Okay. Chris both men on a couch and later with his son's help set it on fire. When officers went to their house to make the arrest, they found the burned couch in the backyard with all traces of the brutal murders gone. >> What exactly did you hear him say about your mother that got you to the point where you were ready to go out there? >> Uh it was when he started on my kids and stuff. He started talking about my babies and all and he started waving my kids and everything. I don't know if he was trying to get them to come with him or what. The threat and all that but Another boy like I said he started I I can hear him when I got up and like I said he started yelling at Lexis. And like I said I don't remember all that so I we started walking you know what I mean coming around the corner and like at that time that boy I seen like I said I don't know his name. He's like right here and then there's Troy and the table was right here. When he swings the bat and like I said by the time he swings the bat I'm already started reaching for my pistol. And like I said I just raised it up and I started And like I said I don't I don't know how I got that. I don't Dalton first, right? Cuz he was the one that swung the bat. I don't know I thought you said Troy swung the bat. No, ma'am. Dalton Yes, ma'am. Dalton swung the bat. He had the bat. I don't know if Troy you know everybody talks about Troy has knives and stuff, but I didn't know I cuz I don't know if he had a knife or not. I didn't even take take the risk, ma'am. Okay. All three of them never mentioned a bat. Never mentioned Dalton being aggressive. Ma'am, he swung that bat. I don't know how I got to say it. They they they stated [music] that Troy had a knife. Well, ma'am that's what I'm saying. I don't remember that. All I remember is the bat. I remember that bat. >> swinging a bat and it's the table I mean that'd be something that they would know, right? Ma'am, I don't know. Like I said I don't know what I don't know what they were going on. I know what I was going on. My son was behind me. I I don't really even want him coming out. Well, you [snorts] said nobody you didn't want anybody to know you were there. No, ma'am. We didn't. Okay. So, why did Alexis call Troy and invite him over? I didn't know if he did. She did, ma'am. I mean was there something that planned that you guys wanted to confront him about something and then he went crazy on you? >> I I didn't want nobody That's what I'm saying. I didn't want nobody to know we were there. If I'd have thought about it now I'd have had them lady fax the papers. Cuz we was already in Mississippi. >> [snorts] >> Was there any conversation about a guy named Jimmy? I don't know, ma'am. You don't know? No, ma'am. Like I said we was in the back room. So, the reason for parking the truck over at the church was just so you didn't want anybody >> want nobody to drive by and see the vehicle. It wasn't because of this guy Jimmy? No, ma'am. Okay. I I don't Like I said I don't know what I said. When I come in like I said I'm more or less went to the bed the bedroom and was trying to watch trying to watch movies and stuff. At this point Chris still believed both men were dead. However, he was about to realize that wasn't the case. You know Troy's still alive. And he's talking. Okay. But he's going to give us a version. Good. Okay. And the the >> [snorts] >> other three gave us a different version of what happened so I mean with yours is the only one that kind of sticks out as different it's not going to help you out. >> All righty, ma'am. So, if there's anything that you want to fix that you've told us that you want to I'm giving you another chance to to come up with some >> [music] >> details. I'm just trying to trying to get my family out of there. I mean you're afraid of your family getting hurt by Troy, but you're letting your your wife and your friend out there two girls out there alone with Troy. If you're that afraid of him why would you hide in the back and let the women out there take [music] care of it? >> Cuz I wouldn't want no confrontation, ma'am. I just wanted him to come and go. Cuz I kind of figured what he come for. What did he come for? Probably drugs. Well, who had the drugs? >> I guess he did or they did. I don't know. >> Well, he's not coming for drugs if he's got them. You said sir I don't know. Is he coming to to give Jessica some drugs or to give Alexis I don't know, sir. This is your guessing. >> [clears throat] >> You just I just know that's what they told me. >> so scared of this guy that you're trying to move your family to Texas away from him, but you're allowing two females in the living room with him and another male not really caring about their safety hiding in the back bedroom with your son. >> maybe he wouldn't be confrontation [music] confrontation. But then when you heard he was being aggressive then you come out [music] with your gun. Yes, ma'am. No, I come out then I I didn't get my gun till I seen it. No, I doubt that because if you're a man defending your home or defending your women >> a shotgun and AR right there. I could have come out with it, you know what I mean? You seen them guns in there. If I mean if I didn't want no confrontation I was more or less wanting everybody to go. According to Chris's son things had happened very differently. While Chris claimed self-defense his son said it was an argument that escalated and ended with a Well, that's not what your son said. Your son said you came out there with your fist balled and you got right in front of him and you were getting in his face while he's sitting on the couch. >> He said he was sitting up No, ma'am. He was He was standing up at that time. >> Everybody said he was sitting on the couch. Nobody said he was standing. You're the only person that said he was standing in front of you and coming at you. Everybody else said he was sitting on the couch. >> I didn't And he pulled a knife and that's what their story is. >> I don't remember Like I said it all happened so fast, ma'am. Nobody mentioned a bat being thrown or or used against you. >> I didn't see a knife. I didn't get into it. They were right there, ma'am. Well, yours is the only story not making sense. Everybody else is somewhat close to each other, but yours is way off in left on left field. Just >> I was the one doing all this stuff. I don't know. I just know I was just trying to get them out of there. I don't deal with this sort of stuff, you know what I mean? So, you came out there and you were going to try to forcefully get them out. I don't know what else I'm trying to do. What what was your intentions of coming out there? Just stop whatever was going to happen. Okay. And how were you planning on doing that if you're so scared of him? I'm not No, I'm not scared of him. I'm scared of what he's doing to my family. That's the difference, ma'am. All right. So, being a man you're going to come out there and you're going to get ready to fight somebody? Are you prepared for that? >> I was just wanting to get them out of there. Okay. How? How are you going to get them out? >> possible, ma'am. >> Tell me what you would do. What I did. At this point investigators were tired of his nonsense. His story was completely different from what everyone else had said. To them it was clearly a planned attack. Chris shot the victims, left the scene, and failed to report the shooting. Well, >> [snorts] >> you weren't planning on shooting right away. >> No, ma'am. I wasn't. >> Okay. So, what were you planning on doing? You got to tell me what your intentions were coming out there. You fighting? I don't know. Like I said I didn't I wouldn't want no fight. I just really want I just You think you'd be like, "Hey Troy, I need you to leave the house, please." And that would be good enough or do you think it'd No, ma'am. Cuz >> I I should have just stayed maybe he'd have left. I don't know. I should have just stayed and I should have just went on to Texas. So, did you start yelling at him when you came out? I don't remember, ma'am. I'm telling you >> Did you Did you come around the corner [snorts] in an aggressive manner that he would see you and be like, "Oh, I'm going to stand up and I'm going to fight." >> quick. Yes, ma'am. Okay. You remember your fist being balled? Ready to fight? Yes, ma'am. I don't know. I really don't know. >> [snorts] >> You said as soon as the bat started coming around you were reaching for your gun. >> [snorts] >> I don't know why they didn't see the bat. I put the bat on back of the truck. So, the bat's going to have your DNA on it? I don't know if it's going to have my DNA, but it might have my fingerprints. I seen a bat about this long. Okay. I really don't know what I was doing. But the way you described it is they got up and approached you. Everybody else said you stood in front of Troy while he was sitting on the couch. No, he was not sitting at that time. I mean he he was up. I don't know Like I said it happened so fast. I don't Logan mentioned something about [snorts] there being some reference to Troy having possibly done something to your daughter. I don't know. I know that and he said that after you shot Troy that you know it just seemed like a weird moment there. Do you remember anything like that? I mean what happened? What was alleged to have happened with his daughter with your daughter? I I just know that my kid screams when he's around her. And he don't want him to do that. And then she was talking about you know she [music] messed with his kid her kid uh Did you think he could have possibly done something to your daughter? >> know, sir. I just Okay, well I'm just asking. I just know how my daughter acts and she she don't act like that. But when whenever my wife would get on and he would be over there I Did that aggravate you? I mean it's her kid I Did you did you say something about that to him? I just really didn't want No, sir. I was just really trying to I just I'm the one that try to keep trouble with that. Yeah, I know. But you got to understand that there's nobody in their right mind if confronted about something that especially involved How old is your daughter? She's 16 months. 17 months. Wow. I really didn't like the guy, but I didn't want all this to happen. Why? Why didn't you? Because you didn't want him to die or you didn't want this on your family? >> want this on my family. Cuz I just That's why I wanted to That's why I was leaving. That's why I parked my truck and I didn't want nobody I didn't want to I didn't want to go. I was trying to go, but you know what I mean? I'm 1,200 miles away. >> But did you think if Troy were to ever show up over here it's going to come to that point where something physical may happen? >> not, man. But did you think that? Hope is one thing, but did you think something was going to go down? >> That's why I had my guns at the house. Okay. But y'all were told that Troy was supposed to come over in 30 minutes, right? Ma'am, I don't know. Like I said, um that's why we had it in the back. Okay. >> When he pulled up >> So you hid in the back cuz you knew Troy was coming over. >> Yes, ma'am. Well, I knew that he was supposed to, but see he never answered them back. So I was hoping that he would. Investigators had all the evidence they needed against Chris, yet he kept insisting that it was self-defense. Instead of calling and saying, "Hey, this guy came over here. I'm scared for my family and you know, I had to shoot him in self-defense." You hide everything, burn the couch, dump his body in a creek along with his friend. Let me tell you something, ma'am. This man Everybody's scared of this man. I don't want Like I said, he's already threatened my mom and everything else. Like I said, he had him Well, he's still got these other people. Get him locked up. He's still got these other people. I got him locked up. You never met any other people. He's never done anything to you to make you think that he has other people that are going to come after you. You said that. [music] Yes, ma'am. No, yes, ma'am. From what I hear from her. >> From what you hear. Hearsay, right? >> Yes, ma'am. Okay. Not direct knowledge that you have. Personal direct knowledge. Okay. Personal direct knowledge do you have that he has other people that will come after you? No, ma'am. No. If you're that scared of somebody where you think they have a hit man going to come after you, why would you sit there and wait for him to come over? I was just trying to get home, man. I just want I didn't want him No, ma'am. I just didn't want him knowing they were going. I want him Everybody knowing that we were going. Nobody had to know anything, but your little friend Alexis over there called him to come over. And you knew about it because you said she told you he wasn't answering the text. You don't think he's going to show, which to me sounds like, "Oh, our plan is foiled." >> No, ma'am. That That wasn't happening. I didn't want no confrontation. I promise you I didn't. You sure you weren't setting up an alibi by acting like you were in Mississippi with all these receipts? >> You can check my No, I wouldn't. I God knows I was ready to go to I'm ready to go to Texas. Everybody's ready to go. We'll be back. I have some more water, sir. Yeah, I'll get you some in just a second. Now, reality was sinking in for Chris and he seemed unable to handle it. Please just get him away. Oh, God. Get him away. Please just get him away. Please, Jesus. Somebody help me. Please. Please just get him away. Please, God. Please just get him Don't kill what you did to me. Just get him away. Please, Jesus. Please. Please. Just get my babies home. Don't let that happen to my kids. Please just get him Please, Jesus. God damn please, God. Just get him gone. Please just get him gone. God. Get him gone. Just don't keep him there no longer. Just let him Oh, God. Just let him get in my truck and go. Please I can't do that to my babies. I just want them to go. I don't want to live. God. Oh. You tell her I take the blame for everything. Just if you want to set them free I got Well, yes, sir. Will you let them go where they can get gone? I'm not sure yet, buddy. I don't know all the Thanks, ma'am. Appreciate it, sir. If you need anything just kind of wave you back here. >> sir. They didn't do nothing, ma'am. I did it, ma'am. I did it. I did it, ma'am. You can let them go, ma'am. You can let them go, ma'am. I did it. I did it, ma'am. Ma'am, I did it. I did it, ma'am. Me. Me did it, ma'am. I did it, ma'am. I just If you let them go, I got it, ma'am. I mean like I said let let's just get them safe, ma'am. >> I'm not letting anybody go right now. I'm still investigating. I did everything. I made them do it, ma'am. Just let them go so they can go. Did you call your mom last night after you shot these boys? No, ma'am.
