That's a problem. What am I supposed to [singing] do? >> Some tragedies happen so suddenly that parents can't process what's really unfolding in front of them. So, what happens when the realization finally hits that child has passed away? >> It's not the way you want to see them. >> This is not the way you want to see them. Okay. Okay. Okay. Come on. Come on. Come on. Please stop. >> I need to see you. >> Look at me. >> I need to see you. >> Look at me. >> I need to see you. >> Look at me. What's your name? >> These were the heartbreaking moments parents realized their children had passed away. We begin with a family in complete shock as a 10-year-old girl fought for her life after a devastating accident inside the home. >> Where shot at? >> Okay. Where at? Right here. >> She was asleep like like I checked her cuz I took a shower and that was it. She was just asleep. >> Is she okay? >> You can't DO THIS TO ME. MY CHILD IS GONE. >> They're working on her right now. >> Please help me. >> On August 20th, 2023 in Roswell, New Mexico, police received an urgent 911 call. A 10-year-old girl had been shot and was critically injured. Officers and EMS rushed to the scene. >> Give me the closest. What's the fastest way there? To the back. >> Where she at? >> Okay, we're at right here. Yes. >> Crap. Crap. >> Where she shot at? [laughter] >> Make sure nobody leaves. It's uh she's code four. Uh in the neck. Got the gun wound here. I only touched her a little bit, but ran some uh pulse check. She's already shooting gun when I got here. Shot in the neck. >> Where's the gun? >> I don't know. I haven't seen none. I can't have nobody leaving. >> Um I'm going to notify uh C on call. Just make sure nobody leaves. Okay. Get everybody's names. Come here. Come here. Do me a favor. Where are the other kids at? Let's go around the side. Come on. Take them with you around the side. You have shoes. Where your shoes at? >> Okay. Is anybody else in the house? >> Okay. Any any other kiddos in the back? No. >> Okay. Dude, I was cleaning and cleaning everything up. >> Yeah, you should have been locked up. >> Just come over here, guys. You guys can hang out right here. Okay. >> Right here in the shade. >> Right here. >> Or where do you want them to go? >> Yeah, right here. >> The medics are here, buddy. >> Hey, if you would just stick around for a little bit. All right. When officers arrived, they found Catalina Harmo bleeding heavily. Her condition critical as family members watched in despair. With EMS still on the way, police needed to understand how this tragedy had unfolded. >> When When's the When's the last time you guys saw her? >> She was asleep. Like, like >> I would checked her cuz I took a shower and that was it. She was just asleep. >> What time was that? >> Like at 12:00, >> but she was fine. Is that the last time you guys saw her? >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> There's no way. Could have been at 12:30, too. >> No, that's the last time I was in there. >> She was fine. She was just asleep. >> Why didn't y'all say something? >> We didn't know. She He screamed and that's when we saw her. That was It was We didn't hear anything. >> You guys So, he walked in there and >> he went in there. I don't know what happened. He ran in there and she was just like that. >> Okay. You guys didn't hear nothing? >> No, we didn't hear anything. >> Where were you at before? >> I was um in her room. I was going to go to the bathroom, but he started screaming at so I left the bathroom and I ran to the room. >> Okay. You were in whose room? >> I was in her room. It's right here. >> Okay. In Okay. >> Yeah. >> And you were the last one to see her? >> Uh yeah. >> Okay. So, you guys were outside of the room? >> Yes. >> And you guys What happened? >> He I just heard him. He was just laying down and then I just heard him start screaming kind of and I ran so fast in here like that. >> You guys didn't hear anything? >> No, I didn't. Nobody at all. >> Where? >> So, were you guys the first ones in the room other than the child? >> Yes. >> Okay. >> All right. Did you guys see a pistol at all? >> Firearm? No. There you go. >> I didn't know it was on the bed and I didn't see it, so I didn't really think nothing of I thought he was joking in. I didn't see him thought he was serious. He I could hear him in the voice. He was scared when he said you're crying when he seen me. >> Little boy. >> Okay. >> What the happened? >> Is she okay? >> YOUR BABY. [screaming] >> YOU CAN'T DO THIS TO ME. >> MY WIFE. >> WHAT HAPPENED? >> My child is gone. >> They're working on her right now. >> Please help me. She's okay. >> They're working on her. >> What the happened? Catalina's sister said they hadn't heard the gunshot but ran to the room after hearing their younger brother scream. Their hands were covered in blood from trying to help her. When their mother, Ava Jaramillo, arrived, she broke down in tears, demanding to know if her daughter would survive. >> Can you tell me my daughter's going to be okay? >> She's not. >> She has a a gun wound right here. >> Are you mysterious to her head? Like where her neck meets her head? >> They're working on her as of right now. She has balls. >> Is she still Is she >> not even stable? >> They're working on her, man. >> Please. No. Where is the baby? Dude, I should let you take him down. I should let you. You okay? >> She's uh she's loaded up into the ambulance. They're going to transport her. >> Is she still there with us? >> I got ma'am. I'm not sure. Right. So, they have an ID. So, they're transporting. >> I'm trying to help. >> Can we call? Can we go? Can we >> Yeah, I'll go to the hospital. Absolutely. I don't know if they're going to let you in at at the moment until the work. >> I cannot believe this is happening. >> Oh my god. You go to work and never think something like this is going to happen to you. I think your brother just went right here. >> Uh she can go. Everybody else seems to stay though. >> It was It was here. She's alive right now, buddy. >> What happened? >> Um um so he wanted to show me on his dad's gun cuz um his dad didn't ch about it. >> Mhm. >> And then so he showed me he didn't know it was un he didn't know it was loaded. Then he asked if I could check if it was unloaded or loaded or not. and told him that I didn't want to. So, he was pointing the gun at the floor. So, when he pulled the trigger, I heard a loud pop and then I couldn't hear nothing cuz my ears were ringing. And then, um I went into the living room and then he came out crying and screaming that his sister was I thought he honestly hit the floor, but I killed his sister. and his two older sisters were in their study and I saw the corner and knock him back. >> Okay. Um, where did where was the gun picked up from? >> On my dresser. >> On the dresser. Okay. So, whenever you said he and then you said your ears were ringing. >> Mhm. >> Okay. How many times did he >> Once? >> Just once. >> Okay. And then what did he do with the gun after that? >> On I wanted to >> Okay. Did you touch the gun? No, >> I touched one of them. >> You touched one of them. Which one did you touch? The >> other one. >> Detectives learned that Catalina's 8-year-old brother and his 12-year-old friend had found multiple guns in a dresser in Eva and Philip's room. While playing with them, the 8-year-old boy pulled the trigger once, the shot that struck Catalina. The questioning continued. >> You were there, though. >> Trigger. >> Yeah. >> Okay. And whenever he asked you to check to see if it was loaded, did he hand it to you? >> I didn't take it. Okay. And then after he pulled the trigger >> Okay. Um, did you see did after that? >> No. >> Okay. >> And then the cops came in and told us to get out of the house. >> Okay. Do you know what color the gun was that you did touch? Um the top was brown and the bottom was like a um bluish color like a like you know like videos on YouTube where the ocean was light blue. >> Mhm. >> That gun. >> Okay. And the gun What color was that gun? >> Black. >> Black. Okay. Do you know if that gun was loaded? Did was loaded? >> No. Didn't load the gun herself? Do you know how to load a gun? >> Yeah. Do you know how to unload a gun? >> Are you familiar with guns and how they work? >> And whenever you heard the the gun go off, did his sister say anything or >> My mom couldn't hear me yesterday? >> Okay. Did you see her whenever that happened? >> She jumped up. >> Like she got up like I thought she got scared. >> Okay. >> On her on her back. on her back. >> Her head facing to the left. >> Her head facing to the left. >> To her right. >> And did she have anything on her or was it just her? Was she covered with anything or >> um the the bottom half of her the cover >> her? >> The two older sisters went in there and then when I went in there to see if she was okay, they told us it came and got us. So, you're saying that you never touched the gun? >> Not the one that you shot. >> So, I just need you to understand that I've talked to everyone already. Okay. I've been to the house. I've been to the room where all this happened. Um, and I know that you're lying. Okay. The story that you gave me about that you in the room. That didn't happen. Did you? >> No. >> You said it was pointing at the ground. >> Yeah. >> Okay. It doesn't look like that happened. There's no evidence pointing to that. So, tell me what happened. Tell me the truth about what happened. >> No, you're not. Come on. >> The boy admitted he knew how to check if a gun was loaded and even how to unload it. Alarming knowledge for someone so young. Detectives suspected he wasn't telling the full truth and began pressing harder. >> I can tell you're hiding something. I can tell you're not being honest. I talk to people that lie to me all the time. That's my job. So, I know you're lying to me. >> He showed me the gun. He asked me to unload it like I like I told you. And then he it looked like he was pointing at the ground, but he could have been pointing it at her cuz he was far back like by the left side. So when he pulled the trigger, I couldn't hear nothing cuz it was loud. My ears were ringing. And that's when I went into the living room. That's when I came out screaming at his sister. >> Was he standing closer to the wall or closer to the door to leave the room? >> The wall. >> Closer the wall. I mean, um, you know where the bed the the headboard of the bed is. You know what the headboard is? >> Okay. [cough] >> Closer to the door. >> Okay. And so whenever he points the gun, can you show me how he you saw him point it? >> Okay. And whenever he did that, what was in front of him? >> And was anyone on the bed? >> My sister. >> Okay. And where were you at that time? >> Okay. And then he again >> Mhm. >> And then what happens when he again? >> I don't hear nothing. >> Did his sister move at all? Did any noise? >> I couldn't hear. >> So what happened when he again? >> She moved. She >> is there anything different that happened? >> No. >> You better not be lying. >> Oh no. Were you pointing the gun in any direction whenever this is happening? >> Okay. >> So, what gun was it that you were holding? >> The ground top. >> Okay. So, you guys were both holding guns >> at the same time. >> Okay. And where were you putting that gun? >> I was holding on >> with both hands. Okay. Was that gun loaded? Yeah. >> Did you ever shoot the trigger on your gun? >> You never it? >> Did you any of the other guns? >> Did you hold any of the other guns? >> Which ones? >> Um the pistols that he showed me and people showed me. >> Mhm. >> Um and then some of the big shotguns that he showed me. >> You were holding the gun with in your hands like you said. >> Yeah. >> Okay. And at that same time that holding the flat gun? >> Yeah. and he was pointing it at to the bed. >> Under repeated questioning, the boy stuck to his story. He and Catalina's brother had been handling the weapons and the brother pointed the gun at the bed where Catalina laid. Catalina passed away the next day and in the following weeks the interrogation continued. Detectives turned their focus to Eva. >> And then so you keep guns in your home, correct? >> Yeah, we have them locked up by the state. Okay. >> I did see that. There were obviously some guns that were left out. How did those guns get there? >> Which one? There was at least seven guns that were not in a safe. >> No way. >> Yeah, >> we put them away the day before. >> Okay. And which guns were those that you guys have put away? >> All of ours. >> Were they rifles? Handguns? >> Handgun, rifles, all that. We only have they believe two handguns. >> Okay. >> A 9 mm. It's pretty big one. >> Okay. >> And then we have a FHN. And we put those away. And ours is like a It's like a a bigger one. Um, that's all I know. >> Kim in. >> Okay. And what color is that one? >> Black. >> Okay. And the 9 mm. What color is that one? >> I think it's gray. >> You guys put away? >> I don't. >> Is it? >> I don't care to touch them. I don't. No. But I know he's very safe. We've had him for years. Our kids have always been around them. >> Mhm. >> I I mean I don't know. Yeah, that was what they all mentioned that they don't they don't know. >> They know and we've always been [music] we locked them up. That's what that blows my mind that they were out like >> and the key is it always kept somewhere specific or >> Yeah, just I think Philip he hides it most of the time. I don't know where he put it that time. >> We were just trying to clean the house, you know, and put everything away, make sure that everything was good. >> Um, >> which side of the bed is yours and which side is Phillips? They said I was on my side. So my side when you walk into this way, my side's always right here >> on this side. The left side >> by the window. >> And then Phillips is closer to the bathroom. >> Yeah. Sometimes we flip and change and stuff like that, but not always. I'm always um and so as far as you know, when you left to work, there was no guns. >> Nope. Nope. None at all. >> Eva said she and Philip had properly stored the firearms the day before. She described the layout of the room, noting the dresser with the guns was on Philip's side near the bathroom. Detectives pressed her for more. >> Is there anything else that you've heard from your kids about what happened and my son just said that he couldn't find Juju for a long time? Did he tell you that he couldn't find him for a long time and that he was trying to find them to see what he was doing and he was in my room? I don't know what else happened expired after that because they couldn't find him for a long time and that he went around looking for him and they couldn't find him until I found him in my room and that he said he saw the whole and then he told her wake up she wouldn't wake up. So he told her, "You are such like this." And he then he say like this. And then my son goes, "Stop laughing. Why are you laughing, Juju? Stop." And then he just kept laughing. And he laid down like that. He was just laughing. And then he goes, "Help. Somebody help." Whenever you had gone to check on your sister, cuz I know that you were, it kind of seems like you were the main one that went to check on her. Did you see any guns in the room? >> Um, yes. >> Where did you see a gun? >> Like at the end of her feet. >> And I kind of moved it away. >> Okay. Do you remember what kind of gun it was? >> No. >> Was it a long gun? A small like a handgun >> or something like this? >> Yeah. But it was smaller. >> Okay. It was small. But it was a hand. >> Okay. And you don't remember what color it was? >> No. >> Okay. And then you said >> Yeah. >> Okay. Where did you move it to? >> Um, I don't remember. >> Okay. Um, [clears throat] you said it was at the end of the bed. >> Uh, not really. Just at the end of her feet. >> At the end of her feet. >> Um, was anyone else in the room whenever you got there? >> Uh, my sister and my little brother. >> Okay. And then you you say you grabbed the gun or did you just move it? >> Um, I kind of like grabbed it and like placed it. >> Okay. Whenever you had grabbed it, had you already checked on your sister? >> Yes, I think so. >> Okay. Um because there was on the gun and I know that you and your sister both had on you. >> Yeah. >> And that's why I'm asking if you had, you know, just moved it. And it's okay if you did. You know, it's it's a gun. It's lying around. Something bad had just happened. If you, you know, if you put it somewhere, if you try to hide it, that's it's okay. You're not in trouble for that. I'm just trying to figure out how the gun got from A to B. You know what I mean? And that's all that I'm trying to figure out in talking to you. And your mom had mentioned that you did move the gun. So, I was just trying to figure out where where you moved it. And if you did put it somewhere, it's okay. If you remember, it's okay to tell me. >> Okay. >> Do you remember where you put the gun? >> I think I remember putting it on the dresser. >> Okay. Um, and that's the dresser by her window. >> By the window. Okay. >> Eva implied the shooter was actually the 12-year-old friend, not her son. She said her boy found his friend in the room laughing while he screamed for help. Catalina's sister admitted moving the gun, but detectives needed clarity on where it had been. >> Um, and you put it on top of the dresser or in the dresser? >> I don't remember. >> Okay. Um, cuz whenever officers got there, there was a gun, but in the drawer. Do you remember if you put it in a drawer? >> I think I did, but I don't remember closing the door. >> Okay. Okay. Thank you for telling me that. Um, whenever you did that, was anyone else in the room? >> No. >> Okay. Um, was that before or after your dad had come in? >> After. I took after. >> Okay. Um, did you see any other guns in the room? >> No. >> Or that were loose in the room? >> No. >> No, that was the only one I saw cuz it was on the bed. >> Okay. And whenever I talked to you on that day, you had mentioned that all your guns were in the safe. >> And we did find a lot of guns in a safe, but there were several guns that were left out of the safe. So, how did those guns get there? Or why were they there? They should have been in the in the safe. >> They shouldn't have been in the safe. >> They should have been in the safe. [clears throat] >> Okay. But they weren't. They were on your side of the bed. Is your side of the bed the side closer to the bathroom? >> Yes. >> Okay. So, that's where that's the side we found the guns. They were handguns. Had you had them out for a reason? Were you doing something with them? >> Oh, you know what? Yeah. I was about to bring another state and I was going to put them in there. >> Okay. So, those guns were going to go in >> the middle RC. Yeah. I don't know if you seen it. >> Okay. When were you going to do that? >> I was doing it that day. >> Okay. >> I was I don't know. I was just cleaning up. I guess started doing something else and get some of the kids food and >> Okay. And so whenever you were in the back? >> Yes. Um, and you never heard a gun? >> I just ran in there and then I seen your your daughter was holding her and just called you out. >> Okay. Did you see anyone? Um, not anyone. Did you see any guns in the room then? >> Not that I can remember. I just said my my blank once I seen I didn't know what to do. >> Okay. Did you call the cops right away? It was the first thing I did. >> The older sister explained she moved the gun to prevent another accident, which explained her bloody fingerprints. Philip claimed he was working in the backyard and only learned what happened when the children ran to him. But his story didn't add up. >> Whenever you called the police, you you told them that the person that wasn't there. Do you remember that? >> No, I don't. I said my man just went. It was just >> Did anybody say who had her during that time? >> Mhm. >> Yeah. Where were the boys whenever >> you came outside >> there? The other one. I don't know where he was at. >> Okay. And then you come into the room and then you said you called police right away. Did you have your phone on you or did you have to go find someone? >> I had to go find it. >> And then after you called police, where where did you go? Did you go back in the house? Did you stay outside? Where'd you go? >> I stayed in the room. >> You stayed in the room and then you stayed in the room till police arrived or >> Yeah. Once they arrived, I showed them which way to go and then keep getting the front door. >> When police arrive, you're outside the house. You're not in the room. You're on the side of the house. >> Oh, yeah. Cuz I was going to show them which way to go because the back the front door was messed up already. >> Mhm. I told him I could kick in the front door because that gentle >> Did you move anything from the from your bedroom? >> After shooting had been Did you remove anything from that room? >> You didn't remove any guns from the room? >> I found those guns. You found them in the RV and I know that you moved them cuz that's what I was told by people over there. I'm just trying to figure out why you >> maybe I don't like I said my mind just went blank. I really don't remember. >> But in the time your mind went blank and your daughter was your thought is to hide guns. >> Why? Why was that your thought? Why did you >> stay there with her? >> Why did you hide the guns from your room? >> I >> maybe you weren't hiding. Why did you move them? >> I have no idea. >> How many guns did you move? >> I'm not sure. >> Was it more than one? Just one. >> They're in a box, I believe. >> Why didn't you hide them all? Or why didn't you move them all? Why did you just move the ones that you moved? >> Hide here. >> Okay. Um, where did you get them from? Where were they at whenever you picked them up? Where did you get them from? >> They were in the closet. >> In the closet. Okay. In the closet where the safe is or in a different safe. >> Okay. >> And they were in a box. Box. Do you mean like a shoe box or a regular box? A gun box. >> Box that came in there. >> Okay. Gun box. Do you know what gun was in that box or what guns were in the box? >> I don't. >> Any other guns that you saw in the room? >> Mm-m. >> No. No. Grab mine. >> Detectives pressed Philip on the inconsistencies. It turned out he had hidden the guns while his daughter lay gravely injured. Under pressure, Philip began to break down. >> Just ran there. Everything popped out. >> Did you move anything else from the room? No. >> Did you do anything else with the guns other than put them from >> the closet to the RV? >> That's all I did. >> Okay. Did you call the cops before you moved the guns or after? >> I honestly don't remember. I don't think so. But like I said, I was cleaning up and I I had got that new city and I was trying to organize. >> No, I'm talking about the day before. So, this was on a Sunday. So on Saturday or on the weekend? >> No, Saturday. We just set up the tent. >> Okay. >> We're going to have movie nights. >> Do you clean the guns that weekend? >> Do you know where the key was on this day? >> I don't. It should have been there. >> Under the mattress. >> Do you know if the safe was open or if it was closed? >> No, it should have been closed. Okay. I believe so. >> In the end, Philip Caramela was named the primary person responsible. Investigators concluded his negligence in storing firearms led to the tragedy. They later discovered he tried to move more guns into an RV while police were still investigating. Philip was arrested and charged with negligently making a firearm accessible to a minor and tampering with evidence. He was released on a $10,000 bond and placed on probation. [music] But on July 8th, 2025, he was arrested again for violating that probation. Up next, a family's worst nightmare unfolded after a young boy was found in a pond while investigators worked to determine whether the tragedy could [music] have been prevented. >> Did I post anything? Please tell me. Please tell me. I have to my baby. He just turned four. Oh my goodness. I failed my I failed my I I failed my >> On March 2nd, 2023 in Gainesville, Florida, police responded to a tragic call. Four-year-old Cash was found by his father, Gabriel Whan, floating in a pond with his head underwater. When officers arrived, his [music] mother, Taichana Figureroa, was in tears. >> You have any idea how long you've been there? >> He was asleep. He was asleep to go get food. I can't. I don't even know what to get outside. Please, please, please, please come back. Come on, boy. Come on. By the mama. Come on. Come [laughter] on. Come on. >> They're here. >> Come on. Please come back. Please. Please bring my life. Please. Oh my god. Please bring it back alive. Please. Get some water. These are chest compressions. Keep on with chest compressions. You got his mask. >> Come on. Come on. Come on. >> You have the mask. >> He's got one right here. I don't know if it was from me running, but he did. Some water came out of him when I was outside. More hair out the side. >> He fell. >> Yeah. >> Does the bed go more flat or lower? >> Pull them a little bit down. Get them flat. >> Lower them on the bed. Do you have Did you ever get a pole on? >> No. >> I borrow your hands to tilt his chin up. >> Y. >> The first officers focused on saving Cash's life, but the boy showed no signs of breathing. Medics performed CPR and rushed him to the hospital, clinging to hope, while officers tried to calm Taichana. >> Oh no. Oh no. Oh god. [laughter] M. Babe, that my poor baby. Oh [screaming] my god. Please. Oh my god. You're loading up. >> Did I post anything? Please tell me. >> Please. Oh my god. You know what to say. Look. I understand. I don't understand. >> My son. >> I want one or two to stay by the pond and then we need to get 10 12 with whoever the kids parents are walking down the house to. I have to bury my baby. He was born on Valentine's Day. Please, he just turned four. Oh my goodness. Please tell me my son. >> I can't see that. He's a new mother. >> Please tell me. >> We going to figure it out. Okay, we working on >> they going to work on him. Okay, they're working on it. Give her some time. All right. >> What do you mean? What do you mean? I was pumping his chest and water was coming up. Please tell me he's coming. Please tell me you're okay. >> He's going to the hospital. Is it too late? Charlie. >> I know. That's terrifying to hear. >> You said you went to the store real quick. >> I went to go get food. >> Get food? >> Yeah. >> Why do you think you were going? >> I let go for like 10 15 minutes. Listen, listen, we don't ever have outside by himself. This never happens. I don't know. I don't know how he got outside. He was Yeah, he was asleep and my son was sleeping on the couch. I don't know how. Please, it's not our fault. We don't do this. My is very >> I watch my every day. He's with me every day. I would never put my in this position. >> Of course, I love him very much. >> I swear. >> Please, please, please, [clears throat] >> Taichiana sobbed, saying she didn't understand what had happened. Cash knew he wasn't supposed to go near the pond. She explained she had only stepped out briefly to buy food while Cash and Gabriel were asleep. Before officers could piece it together, both parents needed to be transported to the hospital. >> Babe, go grab my keys and lock up the shop. [snorts] Go grab my keys and lock up the shop. >> You want to walk? You want to walk to the car so we can get ready to go to the go to the hospital? >> I don't got shoes on either. >> You want to get some shoes? Want to tell them shoes? They didn't see the baby. They didn't see him. >> They would have saw. There's a shop in the corner. That's what I'm saying. There's all There's people right there. They could have saw him. They would have saw him. They would have saw him. >> Oh my god. >> I failed my I failed my even I I failed myself and I failed myself. Oh my god. I protect them. I protect them, too. I protect my I always protect my baby and mom. I'm going to protect them this time. I [ __ ] I feel so [ __ ] stupid. The back door is locked. That's what I'm not understanding. >> I'll get my shoes. >> We got a front gate. Anime gate. And Dave was like, "I don't understand how he got out. >> I don't understand. I don't That gate was locked. THE BACK DOOR WAS LOCKED. I DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW HE GOT OUT. I don't understand. I swear. >> At the shop where they were staying, Tatiana insisted the back door and front gate were locked, raising more questions about how cash had gotten out. Just then, the shop's owner, Celeste, arrived. >> 9671. >> He had uh he had the extra, but when she started working for me like two months almost two months ago, I told him to go ahead and give her the key because she was going to be working in the shop. And then but then I had had breast cancer surgery in January, so I was going to be down anyway. So she was working the shop because it was easier for her to have her son here because he's autistic. >> So you know, so everything's been fine. >> So she finally answered the phone cuz she had came back in. I called her to see how today was and um she had checkers in her hand and I said, "Oh," she said, "Yeah, I just stepped out to go get checkers and uh gave him casher at the shop." And I was like, "Okay." And she walks in and she's like, "Where's cash?" So, I I dropped my trailer at home and came straight here. And she I kept calling her, you know, did you find him? And then she finally answered and was crying and >> I don't want to hold my He just gave me kisses this morning. I just I put him for a nap. I just I was just my smile again. No, this is not No, no, no. The last No, I'm just waiting there for another day. Please, God. [sighs] Oh my god. I don't even know what he was thinking. No, >> no, no. Oh my god. Please. >> As everyone made their way to UF Health Shan's Children's Hospital, the devastating news came. Cash had passed away. Taichiana broke down as a social worker stepped in to support the grieving parents. >> My name's a social worker here. [snorts] We're not horrible parents, dude. >> I don't I don't >> We did everything we came for. Even when we had nothing. Even we were moving from place to place. I made sure I made sure I smile. I made him smile every day. I took I took everything. I did everything right. I took your ass. >> No. No. No. No. This is not fair. This is not This is not fair. My baby. >> I'm not here to blame you. >> I mean, I blame myself. That's a problem. I failed. >> Where are you guys staying right now? >> I'm staying in my in my break room at my shop. >> Just got to move to. They were in the middle of moving and >> yeah, >> I brought food for all of us like >> like like a [snorts and clears throat] normal like a normal thing like it's not start off as a normal day like a normal everyday never by himself like >> you want to talk Well, sure. [snorts] >> I swear I I can't talk to my mom right now. She's going to lose her [ __ ] with me. >> Do you want me to call her away from you? >> Yeah. >> Tell her to call her away from you. >> Just tell her that I need her to go to Florida now. >> I need my mom. He like his daddy. He loved both of us so much. I can only imagine what he was thinking. Gabriel, baby, what am I supposed to do? What am I supposed to do? Oh no. What am I supposed to do? We lost a lost. I swear. >> Both parents were shattered, but officers could no longer treat the case as a simple accident. The case had to be handled as an investigation. They returned to the scene to gather evidence. >> I think we're we're good so far. >> Okay. >> Um, >> where were the parents during all this? >> The dad was supposedly asleep inside and the mom was I don't know. Mom was at Checkers. >> Is this their car? >> Does they even have a car? >> I don't know. >> Those two. >> Okay. >> Ask neighbors. They said they don't have any cameras that face off the back of that house. >> All right. Um, as soon as Panda gets on scene, we'll find out what he wants us to do with the business and everything like that in the scene. And we get that, we'll start cutting some people loose from here. >> Um, I believe forensics is in route, so they're probably going to photograph and do everything and all that crap before we leave. But, uh, we go from there. You all right? You good? >> Yeah. >> Hey, is there already an officer back there? >> A couple of them right now. Okay. The video footage. >> Okay. >> What's happening? >> Is it back this way? >> No, sir. They're in the office right there. >> Yeah. 1545. Yeah. 37. Just play it from here. >> Oh, I see. He went bank went back in. >> Yeah. But it's down here. [music] Boom. 47 or 16. >> 40 18. >> I'm going pause it right there so y'all can >> 48. >> Yeah. >> 48. >> And he fell in here, but he was found down there. >> Yeah. battery is trying to get down. We >> have him entering the water at 164. >> Dude, that's wrong. >> Yeah. I see. You see, he comes out, he comes back in, >> he comes out of >> at 448. >> Yep. So he he comes out he comes out first at 1645 on the camera >> and then he comes back and then he reemerges at 1647 and at 164 >> but he's got it false in there. So if y'all we flash I'm not going to be able to watch it. >> Don't watch it. >> And so >> right here he was found. >> Okay. So it's almost 40 minutes later. >> Surveillance footage revealed Cash had entered the pond 40 minutes before his parents found him. The chance of saving him had been slim. Back at the hospital, Celeste shed light on the troubled relationship between Taichiana and Gabriel. >> So, what the [ __ ] Apparently, she left him in there with the baby daddy while she just went right next door to cut her nails. The baby's sitting next to me. Come on. Like, what the [ __ ] going? She's like, I don't know. I'm next door cutting her nails. I walk on my way to the shop. And so, I go in the shop. Frey, no problem. little voice is screaming cuz he's very he's separation with her >> very connected >> very very Kylie I'm at the hospital right now okay huh yes yes right now let me go okay all right I love you it's my daughter the one that's pregnant so I I when I came in there I saw cash crying and the guy I was like I go in the back and she comes she comes out the freaking um cuz I was blowing her phone up. She comes out the smoke. She was like I was over there cutting the nails. So I go freaking like Mhm. So he was like, "When was that?" Few weeks ago, couple weeks ago, he was because she's not he stop it. But we did >> I bought him a birthday cake for birthday on Valentine's Day. >> We just Hello. Yeah, beds and everything back. So, no a lock from both sides. Yeah, >> you're going to have to somebody's going to have to hold that. I'll side if you want, I guess. >> Yeah. >> Doesn't matter. >> I'll pull up back here and stick a car here. And >> if you want to grab Give me a second to get my car out here and then if you want to grab your car. >> Park right up front. >> Right up front. In their bedroom, officers found drug paraphernalia, a tablet covered in white powder, a rolled dollar bill, cannabis, [music] and meth. This confirmed Celeste's earlier statements about possible substance use. Investigators requested a urine sample from Gabriel. >> The cups are right here. Okay. Yeah. Can you make sure Um, we're going to chat with um, [snorts] Tatiana and we're going to chat with you. Um, we understand that you guys share the bedroom with the room and there's three of you guys staying in there. We need to we need to go in there. Um, is that okay with you if we just we're going to ask all of you. We have desk view if we can go through there just make sure we good with you. >> Okay. Thank you so much. So again, I'm a detectctor. you know, I'm sorry, we have to talk about this. Um, you um, you were living with him at Celeste's for a little bit just for temporarily. >> Yeah. Do you remember when it was that you moved into Celeste's >> a month ago? >> It was. Yeah, it was right before my surgery. >> Yeah. Okay. And you work there obviously and you you do the dog grooming and uh and you're staying at her uh business there. >> Yes. Temporary cuz she's getting some home. >> Yes. Okay. >> You know like I'm watching TV like we normally do cuz end of the day came back running down and he said where's cash? And I said what do you mean he should be on the couch? He's like no he's not. That's when we started panicking. We went out the front door [snorts] and running around the parking lot. So, we didn't even check the back. And as she >> Gabe was the one who found sorry >> with Gabriel's urine sample secured, detectives turned their focus to Titiana. She described the day as ordinary until she asked Gabriel where Cash was and panic set in. Together, they searched the parking lot, unaware that the boy was in the pond behind the shop. Detectives pressed her further, determined to understand how the day ended in tragedy. >> Wait, did Gabe trigger you because he said that he didn't know where he was, or did Gabe trigger you because he just wasn't with [music] Gabe thought he was with me, I guess, when he had woken up, but I was like, "No, he was on the couch." Gabe woke up when I woke him up. Like, I'm not like I'm not I know I'm not making Okay, so >> No, you're making you're making sense, >> you know, like he's trying. >> Yeah. So yeah, >> and we and and when they went both went to sleep and then we went and took a nap around 1:45. She texted me around like 2:30 saying that Bella was being dropped off at 3:15. Bella got dropped off at 3:20. After Bella got dropped off, Cash was still asleep cuz I gotten up when I heard the door open. Cash was still asleep and that's when I went down. >> The time on the checker's back, it tells you the time I got my food. I ordered my food. I sat in there waiting in line like waiting for my food to be given to me cuz Checker says they do the hot wings fresh. So, it's been 10 minutes. After 10 minutes, I hold right back. Boom. Like, I didn't stop at another store. I grab the food with the drinks and I go inside like, and then I was like, I turn the lights on. I go back there and I place food down and I walk back this way. [snorts] And then as I gave and he said, "Oh, what? You have food?" He walked past the couch. So, it wasn't like he you know, like but like the lights weren't on in the room. So like when he walked past me, he's like, "Oh, food." And I guess when he turned around after he turned the lights out, he's like, "Well, where's Cash?" I said, "What do you mean he should be on the couch and he's like, "No, he's not." Then I saw the dog room door closed. So maybe he had locked himself in the dog room. That's why at first we panicked, went out the front door and we looked all over the spot >> and we should have walked in the back. I don't I don't >> think you could have saved it. >> If I knew if I checked the back first, I could have probably I don't know how long. I don't know. >> Tell me about how you found out that he wasn't in there. Walk me through that. >> She woke up and then or she walked in. She said she had she said I got some food. I woke up. First thing I did was look for where my kid at first thing. So I walked out, passed her. Where's cash at? She said he's on the couch sleeping. I walked back in there. Maybe I didn't see him. We looked, wasn't there? So I started searching the building, looking to all the doors, open everything up. Where is he? Yelling his name. I was like, where is he? She's like, I don't know. I was like, he's not in here. So we start freaking out. Around the building. So I wrote around the building. >> Outside. >> Outside. >> Do you call 911? Who calls 911? No, I think one of the other dudes did. Okay. >> I didn't even know what my phone was. Okay. Something just told me to go to the water. I don't know what it was. So, go to the water. I went to the [music] water. >> See the lake. >> Now, is he close to >> so close? I mean, >> right. As the investigation continued, blood tests confirmed Gabriel had meth in his system at the time of Cash's death. Detectives believed the boy had not been properly supervised. Manslaughter charges were prepared against both parents. But months later, prosecutors decided not to move forward. [music] Next, a desperate 911 call led officers into a chaotic scene where everyone had a different version of what happened. And a family was about to receive devastating news. Our victim is here with a shot to the head. Looks like large amount of brain matter on the ground. >> Somebody's >> Yes. >> Who? >> Jennifer. >> Sorry. >> On November 6th, 2022, Newport police received a call from a distraught woman, later identified as Shannon, desperately asking for help and reporting that someone inside her home had been shot and was injured. >> 911 location of your emergency. >> We need an ambulance. Somebody's >> Are they outside or inside? >> No, they're inside the house. >> Okay. Is someone there at least controlling the bleeding? >> I don't know. >> Okay. Do you know where they were at? >> Yeah, she's in the chest or somewhere. It's in her head. >> She's in her head. >> Yes, she is. She awake at all. >> Where's the gun? >> Oh god. >> With a gun? >> Yes. >> Was this accidental? Is the gun still on scene? >> Yes, it is. Okay. All right. I just want to request that no one touch that weapon. I do have law enforcement and medical heading to you. Okay. >> Come on. Where's everyone? Where's everyone else at? They're downstairs. Okay. Just set your shoes down there. What? What's going on? >> I see all over your hands. What's going on? >> Chris got in an argument. He started throwing things. >> Who did? >> Chris. >> Oh, Chris. Okay. >> He started arguing. He got close and loud and picked up something. Three. >> Were you in the room? >> I had >> Did he pick up a rifle or what? >> All right, just come over here. I'll put you in the car. >> The first person officers encountered was Nathan Fry, visibly shaken, claiming a man named Chris had argued with Jennifer Lee before gunfire erupted. Suspecting Nathan's involvement, officers detained him. Moments later, Shannon stepped outside, but her account didn't match Nathan's. Okay. What was going on? This is her rep. >> Anybody else see it? >> No, I heard it. >> In my room and obviously Nate pulled out the gun. I don't know what happened. >> Nate pulled out the gun. >> Yeah. >> Okay. All right. >> Because everything he's got mad all over him. >> How did you Okay. >> Chris says >> Chris says he pulled it out. >> Yeah. He's always carrying around weapons. >> Nathan is >> Yeah. Okay. Just have a seat right there. >> Who else is inside besides Chris? >> Chris, come on over this way, man. Okay, come on over here. Come to me, son. Make sure you got no weapons. Okay. So, what happened, man? Talking about opportunity, right? Got a bag at me. Go off. I thought he came down water spray down and >> Okay. I realized I had >> Okay. Go ahead. Go. Okay. Do me a favor. I don't want you to talk to anybody else. Okay. >> All right. So, go ahead and have a seat over here by the front of this uh Dodge Dangle, please. Right here. >> Airport police. Newport police. See? >> All right. All right. You want to go right there? >> Yeah, it's obvious. >> Yeah. And there's a lot of uh on the ground. So here >> so our victim is here with a head. It looks like >> large amount of brain matter on the ground. That's what there that's what initially is being said. Yes. >> There's no easy way to say this, bud. Um but there was some kind of altercation in your mom's room and a firearm was discharged and your mom has passed. Um I have grandma coming. >> Who just fired the arm? Nathan or Chris? >> Well, that's what we're going to figure out. Okay, that's what we're going to figure out. >> When you guys are taking my before I see him, I'll kill them both. >> Okay, we'll take care of it. Okay. >> Hey, uh, your brother's right around the corner. >> Okay, I'm going to take a by. >> Conflicting stories left police unsure who to believe. With Nathan and Chris detained, they entered the house and found Jennifer's body. This address was already familiar to them. Past calls had involved heated confrontations between Jennifer, her ex-husband Chris, and her boyfriend Nathan. Records showed a turbulent history with both men, and tensions had recently escalated. Jennifer's son, overwhelmed by grief, stormed away while her mother arrived, still unaware of what had happened. >> Natalie, I second real talk to you real quick. >> Shut up. >> This is Jared Horton. He's one of our chaplain here. Hi. >> Okay. >> Somebody's >> Yes. >> Who? >> Jennifer. >> I'm sorry. >> Hey, Nate. For everyone's safety, where did you put this at? >> I didn't have >> You didn't have a gun? >> No. >> Okay. You told me earlier you you put it away. >> They had it put away. >> Who put it away? going to have the gun put away. >> Okay. >> And how did somebody get if the gun got put away? >> They were fighting all night. >> But all I'm worried about right now is where the gun is just for cuz that place is a disaster. Just walking in there to search. I don't want the gun to go off. >> I don't know. >> Okay. You don't know where you put it? >> I didn't put it anywhere. >> Okay. All right. Hang tight then. you came upstairs this morning or this afternoon and then um make something to eat. Um you said you then went in and checked in with Jen >> looking for a cigarette and then you told her you found the saw. >> Is that when she initially >> made a comment? >> That was Yeah. >> And when you when you talked to Jen, where was she at? >> Uh she was in a room. >> She's in a room. Okay. >> Who was in the room? >> Uh her and Nate. >> Okay. >> And she started to shut down. She started to do uh other stuff. uh while I was talking and she stopped me [music] and said, "Fine, I get it. I'm a horrible person. Shannon's your support person, and I'm done. Leave me alone." She got up, came towards me, and looked like she was going to swing. And I kind of curled back and then I pushed through back into the room towards the [music] bed and the corner I see Nate jump up on the [music] bed steps back about 2 ft into [music] the middle of the bed and then I hear bang. After breaking the news to Jennifer's mother, who was devastated, officers took Nathan and Chris in for questioning. Chris was brought to a nearby fire station to collect his clothes and give his account. His version suggested Jennifer's death may not have been intentional. >> Thinking I'm dead, I feel water. I think Jen coming at me. He just got scared and [clears throat] he just be happy obviously operational gun in his hand jumps up stumbles cuz he okay he's on a soft bed and points the gun pulls the trigger and J step back to me and basement. >> Yeah. I'm sorry, man. >> Oh, man. And you know the room is being audio video recorded, right? Okay. So, you say this all started last night. >> I think cuz they were Chris was on one. >> Chris was on one. What do you mean on one? >> He's just ranting and raving going through everything. They were ready. I woke up this morning to him talking and then [music] he start he got more aggressive and louder. He got closer. [music] She jumped up on me started yelling call him get out. I know I [clears throat] didn't you then. Who did? >> Did you accidentally pull the trigger? Were you trying to make Chris stop? I don't use weapons or anything till I get >> Okay, so understand this. Pieces of her face and brain are on all over Chris. Okay. He was on the other side of her when she was. You've already told me there was just three [music] people in that room. You, Jennifer, and Chris. Did you not love her? Did you not love her? Yes, I [singing] did. >> Okay. I know you didn't try to kill her. I know you didn't try to hurt her. >> [music] >> You were probably trying to protect her. I'm aware of what Chris has done to her in the past. For Jennifer's sake, for her memory, be honest here, son. It was I know you didn't mean to do it. >> Chris claimed the shot was accidental meant for him. Despite his history of domestic violence, witnesses pointed to Nathan as the shooter. Nathan, however, offered no accusations, only shifting stories that raised suspicion. Believing the incident might have been an accident, detectives prepared a strategy, framing it as deliberate, hoping Nathan would push back and reveal the truth. >> Chris is telling me you picked it up, you aimed at it, and you shot him. You at him, and then you hit Jennifer by mistake. That That's homicide. That's murder. You first told me you knew nothing about the gun or how it happened. Now, your statement's getting a little closer to what Chris said. So, we need we need to stop lying because it's not going to help you when you if you what you know with what you're going to be charged with. You need to be clear here. You need to be honest. Chris says you pick the gun up, you start to point it at him as you and you trip on the bed. >> Okay. So, you just pointed the gun at him to make him leave to make him stop. Is that what happened then? Okay. that you were not wanting anybody to get cuz that makes that makes a lot more sense. [music] >> And when you pointed the gun at him, is that what you felt? >> Believe so. >> Do you believe so? So, [music] this gun, this gun sounds like it belonged to Steuart, [music] the gentleman that just recently passed away, right? A lot of his firearms were um either destroyed or damaged in that in the in their house fire that they lost, right? So, you were working on some of them trying to get them. They were damaged, it sounds like, in the fire. How about the gun? How many times you guys take >> it? Still if >> it was still heavy. >> What do you mean heavy? >> Hold the [ __ ] together. Put the actual stock very easy >> for that fire. [music] You have to [ __ ] the the hammer backy. [clears throat] >> What's very touchy? This one doesn't have anything securing it. So, it's loose. I understand it's very touchy, but if it is functional, there's enough pressure in that spring that you would there's no way that the hammer could fall back on its own. Did you pull the hammer back? >> No. >> Then how did the hammer get pulled back? >> It was already pulled back. >> Obviously, you had your finger on the trigger. >> There's no trigger. anything. >> There's no trigger guard. >> No. >> Okay. [music] >> I just picked it up and grabbed it. >> Understand? So, I can understand no trigger guard and the trigger could get >> but >> I did not pull a 100 pack intentionally. [music] >> Good. I would not go that far. and I told him there multiple times. >> All right, man. >> In the end, Nathan was convicted of first-degree manslaughter and unlawful possession of a firearm and was sentenced to 12 years in prison. Chris faced no additional charges. Moving to the next case, where a mother was completely desperate as paramedics fought to save her 10-month-old daughter while she begged for anything to stop the tragedy unfolding in front of her. >> I CAN'T DO THIS. I CAN'T do this. He's only 10 months old. I want out. I WANT OUT. I WANT OUT. >> I WANT TO GIVE MY life to her. I don't want her to die. >> On April 29th, 2024, police and EMS rushed to a home where 10-month-old Arya Paige was found unconscious. Two women cried desperately as the team quickly began working to save little Arya. [laughter] >> What you need, Paul? Thank you. >> Y >> Yeah, she's burning up. >> Got it. >> Yep. >> Here, I help you hold. >> I got it. >> The car doors were open, too, so sure if they just came out of the car. >> She in the car. She's partial on her neck. Yeah. >> Let me know when you're ready. Polly will be advised. CPR's in progress. No. [laughter] >> Paramedics fought to revive Aria, but her tiny body was overheated and unresponsive, even to CPR. She had been locked inside a vehicle under extreme heat while doctors worked inside the garage. Outside, her mother, Brooke Paige, was inconsolable. >> I CAN'T DO THIS. I CAN'T DO THIS. NO, I can't do this. I just want to hit somebody so hard right now. I can't do this. I can't do this. I swear to God if she dies I will. I can't. I CAN'T DO THIS. [laughter] I CAN'T do this. He's only 10 months old. She's in the garage. >> What can I do? >> Go get Tell them to grab us a uh a pie board. >> A pity board? >> Yeah. >> See if she was in the car or for what? >> Yeah. last. Um, she's burning up. >> Yeah. >> What you got? >> That's what I'm thinking about. I can actually carry her and do >> What do you want me to do? >> Clipboard Frasers. 314 awake. >> Oh, you rolling. You rolling? >> Yeah. >> All right, we're going to block it off for you. >> All right. >> Yeah. No, I got you. >> They're getting >> They're getting ready to roll. >> Get >> I need her cuz she just showed up. I need to know how long she was in that car. Was it running? >> I don't know. >> There's no Rhonda here. >> Y'all can y'all >> in the name of Jesus. My grandbaby. >> I understand. They're going to need to work them. >> Mom is out there with us. We'll get it for you once. >> All right. You want me to go ahead and put it in as a dang? >> Yeah, I'll get out of there. I just need to get a date of birth for it for the >> doctor need to talk to my family. >> Arya was rushed to the hospital where her grandmother Pam Paige was also devastated. Her presence offered Brooke some support as they braced for the worst. >> I just want to know something. >> I just want to know something. >> Y'all want to go in talk to the doctor? >> I don't know. I I just want to know information. I I don't >> The doctor's going to talk to you. >> Okay. You want your mother-in-law to go with you? >> Yeah. >> She can talk to the doctor. >> Okay. Hang your dog res. [laughter] I WANT OUT. I WANT [screaming] OUT. I WANT OUT. I WANT OUT. on the throttle. >> I just need her escort to the sheriff's office. >> Take her. >> Yeah. >> Come back. >> It won't take long just to drop her off and I'll sit on. >> Okay. >> What else? Is there anything we need to do for crime? >> Yeah, let me let me look real fast. >> That's a question for her. As of right now, I'm not quite sure. >> Okay. Cuz I have no details either. I'm >> Yeah, I have nothing. That's why I'm asking. >> Can I go change? >> Yeah, I can. Can I come inside with you? Make sure >> tell her to bring some ID, too. >> Hey, >> she's got a change. >> Have her bring her ID back to you. >> Okay, come on. This way. Let's go ahead and go and get this get this started. Okay. 31 number 15. >> This is defining go him. Okay. >> Could you tell her her to call my husband? >> Go tell her. >> Call her. Call her husband. >> What's his miss Rhonda? What's his number? I'm going to jail. located side. Despite every effort, Arya died of heat stroke and extreme heat exhaustion after her babysitter Rhonda Juel forgot her in the car for 5 hours on a day that reached 100° F. Rhonda was arrested and investigators began estimating the deadly temperatures inside the vehicle. >> You live here on She looks at me but I don't see >> that was 134 interior. >> That's the door being open. So >> the door being open. So you know it was probably 150 or 60 in there when it happened. >> I'm sorry. >> That's okay. Thank you. What to do? No. I I don't [screaming] [screaming] want to be I can't do this. I can't I I don't know what to do, but I want to be in No, no, no. >> I want to give my life to her. She was sentenced to 17 years in prison, though later granted a $100,000 bond while appealing her conviction. Up next, a father's world was shattered after a tragic street racing accident took the life of his 13-year-old son right in [music] front of his family. >> My baby, bro. I know you're my son. >> My baby, bro. Listen to me. I should have stopped him. Come on. Come on. >> On January 29th, 2023 in St. Petersburg, Florida, just after midnight, a motorcycle traveling well over 100 mph tore through an illegal street racing gathering on 28th Street North and struck a 13-year-old boy crossing the road. Ethan Martin had been there with his father and older brother. By the time officers arrived, the scene had already descended into chaos with witnesses fleeing, parents screaming, and a family falling apart in real time. come, bro. We better get you back on the fire trucks. >> Baby, bro. >> I know you're my baby, bro. >> I know. I know. Mr. Martin, come on, man. We got to We got to We got to move you. Okay. >> Ethan's older brother, William, kept repeating that it was his fault, that he should have made Ethan stay by the truck, and watching their father, Johnny, try to calm him down while his own world was collapsing, told the officers everything about how tight this family had been before everything changed. >> You should have stayed home. >> You should have stayed home. [laughter] You need about two more officers over here outside. >> I told him by the truck. I told him get in the truck. Listen to me. It's my fault. >> I should have stopped him. I should have told him to go. >> Not your fault. Not your fault, man. It's not your fault. >> You guys get out with us. >> I should have stayed at the track. You would have stayed with me. >> It's okay, buddy. It's okay. I shouldn't stay next to you. >> It's not your fault. It's not your fault, son. >> Not your fault. >> It's not your fault. [laughter] >> No, it's okay, buddy. Don't blame this on you. >> That's all you wanted to do is play Fortnite with me. You should have just stayed home. It's It's okay. Relax. Relax. >> Everybody on the >> Don't blame this on you. Don't blame this on you. I got to say, >> what the is she going to say? She's going to sue you. She's going to bring your life is your life is >> I'll deal with everything for you, bro. She's going to take the shot, the house, the car. She's going to do anything. >> Don't worry about that. >> Relax. I'm not worried about that. I'm worried about your brother right now. >> This person by the 20 minute. >> No, you're not going to relax. >> Calm down. >> Johnny was doing everything he could to keep his son from spiraling. But in between the words meant to comfort William, the rage he was holding back kept slipping through. And the officers on scene knew that keeping these two separated from the crowd was the only way to stop something worse from happening. Calm down. Calm down. Hey. Hey. Stop what you're saying, dude. >> Stop what you're saying. >> Take it out of anger. >> I got a couple more units. You guys need more up there. >> Just calm down. >> We need two people on the south. >> Back once we get >> calm down because I'm going to retaliate. You're not going to do nothing. Let the law do this investigation 14. >> This is not right. >> You need to come from the south on 28th Street. We don't need anyone coming from the north anymore. >> Okay. >> That other motorcycle. Okay. >> Look at me. >> Oh, look at me. We're not going to move anything. It's just got people here at my other car. >> This is my baby boy. >> Motorcycle up there. >> You want baby boy, too? >> And I need you here, too. Okay. Let him do it. Let him do his job. Okay. >> Just let him do the damn job. Okay. 34. Bravo. >> Father's right. It's a traffic homicide investigation right now. You need to be there for your dad and your dad needs to be there for you. All right. So, all you Charlie Sierra Silver uh stop. Come on. Come on. Come on. Come on. Come on. Come on. Come on. Come on. helmet. Dude, you're not my car. >> This is gas. >> William finally managed to explain what he saw, telling officers that nobody was really racing, just spinning tires, and that he only crossed the street to film a car he liked, never realizing Ethan had followed him until the sound of the crash turned everything silent. >> Away, you know. >> Oh, it's a game. >> It's me old. I don't mean 13, man. >> Yeah. 314. >> It was supposed to be just a car show. Nobody racing. Nobody was even racing at all. >> What ended up happening? >> All the people The only thing was people just spinning tires. That's it. >> And they just stopped 10 ft. That's it. 10 ft. 20 ft. >> Yeah. >> But nobody was racing at all. >> And then I went over here to look at to take a video of a car that I liked. So I cross the street and then some motorcycle crash. I ran to the motorcycle. >> I didn't know he's he crashed because he hit my son. I didn't know Ethan was behind me. You're supposed to stay by the truck. I told him stay by the truck. >> Mhm. >> Stay by the truck. >> It's a car, not a race. Nobody's supposed to be racing here. >> My first time in seven years in a race track. >> Come on, man. >> This is my boy. No, I'm not all right, but >> my boy. >> My boy. I'm so sorry. The officer talked to one of the witnesses sitting in a car near the scene. And from the very first question, the kid's answers felt slippery, like he was choosing each word carefully, hoping the officer wouldn't notice the pieces that didn't fit together. >> What's going on? >> How you doing? >> Were you guys out here for all this whole stuff that happened? >> No, we got to friend our friend >> Do me a favor. Turn the car off, will you? So, we had an accident that was a Oh, sorry. >> With the door, man. >> Oh, my bad, man. >> Uh, whose uh glove is that without touching it? >> Don't reach down and touch it, but is that your glove? >> Sure. No, it's not. >> Okay. Um, were you out here? Did you see uh maybe what happened down there? >> No. >> No. >> No. >> You weren't out here or you just didn't see it? >> I just got a call. >> Here, put your hand out of your pocket for me, will you? >> Yes. Let me just take everything out. >> No, no, you're fine, man. if you can just while you're talking to me. >> All right. What's your first name? >> Anthony. >> Uh whose car is this? >> This is uh >> You got any ID on you? >> This is my buddy's car. Yeah. >> Okay. >> Your buddy's car? >> Yeah. >> Who's your buddy? >> He's He's already over there. >> Who Who is it? >> He's with them. That's >> He's with them. >> What's your buddy? What's his name? >> David. >> David. What? >> Uh what's his last name? >> He's your buddy, but you don't know his last name. >> Well, I don't know his last name. Obviously, >> but it's his car, though. >> All right. Uh, >> what time did you guys get here? >> I got here probably about >> 15 minutes ago. >> All right. So, what did you see down here, man? I mean, obviously, >> we have a pretty bad accident. So, what happened? >> Yeah. >> I pulled I pulled up and saw the ambulances and everything and my buggy >> my buggy was here. My other buggy was here already. And I pulled up and I just >> Your buddy David, right? >> No, no, no, no. Another buddy. He already left. >> He got his car keys and I got it. >> You got whose car keys? >> David's. >> This car? >> Yeah, this for this car. And he told me how did you get here? What were you driving? >> My truck and my buddy. >> My buddy took my buddy took my truck GMC truck there that left. >> I was going to just drive his car to his house and that's it. >> Who has the keys to his car? >> I have the keys to his car right now. Oh, >> okay. But that's David's car. >> That's David's car. I was just going to drive it to a house. >> Okay. So, were you out here when the accident happened? >> Help us out here so we can figure out what happened. >> No, I was not. >> I was not. >> You're going to tell me that you guys rolled up after? >> Yeah, cuz I got a call. I was already in the area. >> Uh-huh. Okay. So, where were you? >> I was in the area. I was on I was >> Where were you? >> I was down there. >> So, I was coming from I was coming from the >> I was on the [ __ ] the bridge. >> Listen, you're not being honest with me, man. Now, I got to go back and tell them that you're not being honest with me for whatever reason. And I don't really know why at this point, but your story stinks. Why can't you just be straight with me, man? >> You know, because it's all going to come out in the wash anyways, you know, and it's going to look really not great if they come to find out you were directly involved somehow, which they will find out. >> You know what I mean? So, that's what I'm I'm asking you now. Like, what's going on, man? >> All right. >> The mother pushed through the chaos looking for her boy. And even as officers tried to hold the scene together, witnesses quietly gave up the one piece of information they had been chasing all night. Who was riding that bike? >> I know. I know. >> Miss, what's going on? >> My son. >> Who's your son? >> Christian. >> How old is your son? >> 17. He was his best friend's brother's the one that got >> Listen. Listen. >> I need to see my son. >> Listen, I I understand, but what we have Listen, listen to what I'm saying. We have an active scene over there, and I can't just have you running over there just just because you think maybe he's there, maybe he's not. We don't know where he is. No, I know you can't. >> So, what I can't have you doing is run through an active scene cuz you're going to run into problems. Understand that I'm panicking. >> I get it. But I'm going to need you to stand by for a second. Let us handle what we got to do up there. Let us figure it out. Okay. But I can't have you just running through there yelling your son's name. >> Find him. >> Just Just give us a minute. Okay. >> We don't even know your son's name yet. >> We don't even know your son's name yet. >> Christian. >> All right. So, Christian and then uh >> will you like the ball or that? My buddy was on the bike. >> Your buddy was on the bike. >> He was just cruising down. >> You can't see down here. I mean, random. >> So, your buddy was going this way. >> Yeah, he was just cruising. >> Okay. And then uh somebody or he somebody >> pedestrian ran across the road and pedestrian pedestrian. Gotcha. Is this like a meet up spot that you guys meet up or so around? >> Yeah, I don't really come down here much cuz I live in Pasco County. Um, no, my uh girl and her cousin I just picked up her cousin from the airport. So, >> yeah, >> we need I guess a car chill car going on. >> Yeah. Yeah. I know you guys meet up like on street sometime. >> Yeah. I just like seeing the cars and stuff, >> right? >> So, all the spots you guys meet up? >> Yeah, I guess. >> So, this is not like the first time basically like you're here in this spot. >> This is the first time I've came to this spot. Usually, I go over to like the Walmart or like that racetrack gas station. >> Right. Right. Um, yeah, cuz I mean I'm not really here to race my car. >> Got it set up for >> What about your buddy? Is this his first time or no? >> Um, he's in the military. He's a marine. Um, he used to live here and then he got stationed. He's just down here for the weekend. >> Yeah. Was he on this lane or like >> he was on this? >> Yeah. Are you related to anybody here? >> No, I'm not related. I'm really good friends with him though. >> Gotcha. Pretty much. >> What? What did you see? What happened? >> So, he was on the bike. He was coming this way. >> Do you know who was on the bike? Yeah. Uh Carlos, do you know Carlos? Like you guys? Yeah, he's my guy. He's my close friend. >> Okay. >> Um he was riding this way on the bike and a group of people tried to like run across the street. I'm guessing is what they were doing, but they ran across the street and they ran in front of him and he >> Yeah. And what you remember like was all running the same direction people? Like were they crossing this way? Were they crossing this way? >> That way on that side of the road going that way and they were crossing that way. >> The name they gave up was Carlos. And when officers found him near the scene, he was too broken to speak. But the girl standing nearby mentioned that her cousin Natalie had been recording on her phone and what she captured was about to change everything. >> Stay over here. >> Hey, I got to let him know soon. Bro, >> we'll let him know. We'll let him know. Let him know, >> man. Man, can't be back in the scene. Okay. Can't be coming back. >> I got to let him know, bro. I got >> let him know, man. Trying to be cool with you. >> It's just between me and him. It's between me and >> he was going to come over here, too. Okay. Just between me and him. Let me talk to him. Let me talk to him. Let me talk to him. Please. Come talk to him. Let me talk to him. Let me talk to him in part in just trying to clear people out right now, but we don't want anyone. >> What the [ __ ] >> Dude is 13. >> 12, bro. Dude is 12. >> 13. Same [ __ ] >> Hey, he's not, bro. He just got pronounced as a [ __ ] teen either, bro. >> Oh god, bro. What the is this [ __ ] >> I remember Carlos wanting to try his friend's bike. >> Okay. >> And that was the black one. >> Okay. >> But he was riding a blue one all night. >> Carlos was riding a blue one all night. >> Yes. But then he wanted to try his friends or uncle's racing. >> H >> was he racing? >> He went out alone. I don't think he was racing anyone. >> Okay. >> He went that way and then I think he turned around. >> Okay. >> But fast. >> I went to go record on my phone and my phone was >> on my phone. the race. The races >> it I just wouldn't like record like my friend go by >> and my phone was >> and then my cousin Natalie in the car, she's afraid to tell you that she has a video on her phone. >> But at first I thought it only recorded him like, you know, like zooming by. But we went back and we watched it and you can hear everything happen. >> Okay. Well, I'm going to need to see that. >> Yeah. But she's scared to talk to you. >> But that's Do you know how fast he was going? Roughly. >> No, but there's a video of you. >> When officers finally sat down with Natalie and watched that video, they didn't just see Carlos flying down the road. They could hear the impact, the screaming, and the exact moment a night of watching cars turned into something nobody could take back. You're not in trouble. Okay. Do you got your driver's license on you or anything? >> In the car. >> In the car. Okay. Go ahead and grab it. She's just got to get her driver's license. Was going pretty fast. And my cousin was on the floor. She took a video of it and then in the video we could hear the crash and you hear the crash from real life and we ran down and then there was a blue bike and I just seen the one body and I and then my cousin still had my phone and I had her call 911. >> Can't see the video. I'm trying to rewind it back. >> The following day, officers shifted their attention to the two men whose decisions had set the stage for everything that happened on that road. The uncle who owned the bike and the father who had brought his sons to watch. Neither of them had been behind the handlebars, but the questions waiting for them weren't about what they did. They were about what they allowed. Yes, sir. >> Owner of the uh the bike that was involved in the accident. >> Yes. >> With your nephew. >> Okay. Uh what I'm asking you now is consent to basically do DNA swabs on the front of the bike basically. >> Oh yes. >> To prove uh you know that that's the bike that >> the juvenile and that your nephew was the one that was riding the bike just to eliminate everything. So, you're okay with me [music] doing DNA swabs on the bikes? >> Yes, I destroy him. >> That's unfortunately that's the only two that I can uh give because it's the only thing that didn't have any or anything on it. Okay. So, where we're at in the case, uh I've been discussing with the state attorney about possibly filing charges and stuff like that. Okay. I guess the motorcyclist and even the uncle for basically allowing his nephew to ride the motorcycle. >> No, no, he he he's he's of age. But the thing is is he doesn't have a motorcycle endorsement, so he shouldn't have been riding that bike. [snorts] Uncle was there, the owner [music] like and everything. And obviously the nephew was too. All right. So that's where we're at on the investigation. I'm still conducting it. It's still kind of early, but I have discussed it with the state. >> My lawyer on top of this, too. I'm I'm going let the law >> That's That's exactly what you said. >> I know that night say a lot of things. I was pissed. >> Yeah. >> And I was hurt, but I'm let you guys handle this. >> Okay. >> At first, I was scared cuz I put him in danger. They never [ __ ] gone. I thought I was going to go to jail. Just trying to have fun. So, all right. Good. [clears throat] Stand up. >> Ever took a fishing? I thought I'd [laughter] do a fishing, but >> days later, a new lead sent detectives to a young woman named Jasmine. And while she had nothing to do with the crash herself, her boyfriend Steven had been standing just feet from Ethan when it happened. Close enough to see things he hadn't told anyone yet. >> What's your own name? >> Uh, Steven. >> So, I'm a traffic homicide investigator. and I'm investigating a crash that caused the death of somebody. >> Yes. Yes, sir. >> Um, >> so I'm going to show you a series of photos um that we got. So, this is the first photo. Do you recognize the car like the headlights or anything? I know it's kind of like cuz of it's dark. >> Uh, yes sir, I do. >> Yeah. What do you How do you recognize that? >> The car. >> That's your car. Um, yes sir. >> Okay. So, there's the second one. Obviously, this is a little closer if you were there. >> Yes, sir. Yes, sir. >> Why'd you leave? >> It's a weak stomach. And then actually in those pictures, I'm pretty sure you got that from the video. >> Yes. Yes. >> The guy he said back up. >> Back up. He said, go. Okay. >> That's literally the only reason why. >> Who told you back up? >> The dude that was re-recording. I don't know who he was. >> Oh, he Okay. How did you see >> bike? >> Um, so I'm going to be 100% honest. >> Yep. That's fine. And that's what I want. >> No, no, no. The the biker was not racing at all. >> Okay. >> See how fast he was going? >> 100 something. >> 100 something. So >> 100 something. But he he was not racing. >> Were you in the car when it happened? >> No. No. No sir. No. I was actually like standing like 5t in front of where the kid was. >> Like 5t. >> I was uh on the side of the road. You know how there center lane? uh the lane and then there's another lane and the road >> like the turn that turn lane. >> Yeah, I was I was standing over there by Okay. Well, a little bit down the turn lane. >> Um >> Okay. So, you weren't in the car itself? >> No, no, sir. Uh the kid the kid and the brother were in the middle lane and the kid at the last minute tried to run across the bike. He was like a deer in the headlights. It was crazy. In the end, Carlos Fernandez was charged with vehicular homicide, reckless driving causing serious bodily injury, street racing, and operating a motorcycle without an endorsement. He was sentenced to 7 years in prison, followed by 13 years of probation. His uncle was charged with street racing as a spectator and culpable negligence for handing over a bike to someone who had no business riding it. Next, [music] grief and chaos consumed an entire family as they learned the 15-year-old boy had been killed in the woods behind their neighborhood. >> Can I see your ID, and can you show me where she's at, please? >> Don't look good. That's all right. Let me go in there. >> I don't want to go to jail. >> Okay. Can you walk? >> Can you walk? >> Disgusting. >> She was sitting in a chair, curled up in a ball, terrified, >> laying on her back in that hospital treatment bed. To me, she looks like a breathing corpse. >> On November 28th, 2023, Baldwin County deputies responded to a call from a worried aunt who hadn't seen her niece Stacy in 2 years and feared she was being held captive inside her own home. The woman who showed up at the door was Bobby, Stacy's own sister. Bobby started dodging every question and begged them to wait for her husband. But nothing could have prepared them for what waited in that house. >> I don't think this thing's been used in forever. >> Yeah. >> Yeah, it does. >> How are you? You live here, I assume. Okay. What's your name? >> Bobby. Bobby. >> Okay. Give me Do you remember who we're looking? Who is it that we're supposed to be looking for? We got contact with somebody. >> Stacy. Stacy. 33y old female. >> Stacy. Do you know where she's at? >> Y'all just went to my husband cuz I'm about >> Where's Stacy? Does she stay here with you? >> Okay. Where is she at right now? In the front. >> She is there. >> Can I talk to her? Can I see her real quick? >> She don't talk to nobody. >> Well, I just >> She want to do nothing for me. >> Well, can you show me where she's at? I just want to see her. Put eyes eyes on her and make sure she's okay. >> She won't take no bath. Go ahead. >> She don't even got no clothes on. I can't control her. I don't know what to do myself. And I didn't want to call y'all or no place like that cuz I have kids. >> I got you. Okay, sweetie. Do you have your ideas? >> My mom and daddy had died and left her behind. And I don't know what to do no more. I don't know what is to you. >> That's my sister, but I ain't got no written paper saying that she's my own. >> Okay. Can I >> that I'm guardian or nothing? >> Can I see your ID and can you show me where she's at, please? >> She don't look good. >> That's all right. Let me go in there. >> I don't I don't I don't want to go to jail. I'm telling you. >> What are you going to go to jail for? >> For the way she look. >> Have you been doing anything to her? >> No. I mean, I put her food in there and all, but >> Well, let's go. Just >> She tries to fight people. All right, that's fine. >> She don't have her on her no clothes. Just a shirt and tell and she's real skinny. >> All right. >> All right. What's your >> Stop taking her medicine. She won't take it for us. >> Okay. >> And none of my other family will not help. >> I got you. >> I just don't know what to do myself. >> Okay. >> And she is your sister. >> We working on moving out this house cuz this house is really old. >> When Bobby finally led them to the room, she admitted she kept her sister locked inside with a twisted coat hanger through the door because she claimed Stacy tried to fight people. But the way she said it made it sound like she was the one who needed protecting. >> Can I Can you show me what she got? >> She come home right now. >> Had anymore. >> I had to do this. >> She tried to beat on me for >> So she's locked in there right now. >> And she tried on a kid, but we don't know what to do with and I didn't want her to go to jail or something. >> When's the last time you let her out? >> Another clear. No, she comes out and she just >> she acts crazy. >> What's all this? >> Is this around here or no? >> No. >> I told Can you open it for me real quick? >> She won't take a bath. She >> just open cracking a little bit. >> Yeah, just open the door for me, please. >> Nasty one, too. I can't handle her. She's bad. >> She's in that room in there. >> Okay, that's fine. Copy Barber 27. >> Hey sweetheart, how are you? Rom EMS, please. You okay? What I mean? uh severely malnourished lady. We have contact with her. My sister's here has her locked up in our front. >> The husband, Jerry, showed up shortly after and started talking just as fast as Bobby, blaming Stacy for everything wrong in that house while conveniently leaving out the part where they had been cashing her disability checks and living under her roof without providing any real care. >> Can you move the things away from the door so I can open it? >> Ma'am, why is the door like that? Just so she can't get out. Yeah. >> Where are >> Caesars? I know of. I don't kiss. >> Oh, when does your husband get home? >> He can come home now, but it's almost time to pick our kids up. >> Hey, how are you? >> Good. Um, >> who are you? Are you Do you live here? >> I'm her husband. >> Oh, okay. All right. Um, we just got called here to do a welfare chat. >> Um, >> we don't want her here. I mean, she she can't she don't want to do nothing. She done tried to scratch me. I tried to give her a bath. I'm a guy. She's a girl. >> And I know for a fact if you drag somebody to go give them a bath more than what 10 foot is kidnapping charge and I don't want that neither. >> So you guys, I guess just kind of ended up being like >> we're stuck because we have no family. All I have is my daddy. He lives down in Dublin. Her family ain't working. They don't have nothing to do with us. It's just me, >> okay, >> and our kids. >> Y'all got left with this other lady. >> We got left with her >> and >> when her parents died, >> when her parents died and we was trying to get out before her mama and then her mama didn't stay here with her daddy and then her daddy died and then we got stuck here and nobody to help with her. >> Yeah. So, I guess there's no other family to help take care of her. Does she have any problems or >> she's all I know? >> They keep saying she's a toilet. That's all I know. So maybe she >> I don't know. I know she has seizures, but I know she ain't taking her medicine because she won't damn take it. She'll damn tried to scratch you, eat you, puss at you, >> and she scares the living out of my kids all time. So we we just don't want >> So I'll try to just keep her on that side. >> Do you have your sister's ID? >> She don't have one. She would never go get one. >> I got you. >> My daddy couldn't hold a hand on her name. >> What's her name? >> Stacy. >> You know her social? You don't know her soul. >> I don't think I got her social security. >> Okay. >> No, but daddy, he was in pretty bad shape. She would beat him >> before he died. >> And he didn't know what to do with her. And I was just going to try to take care of her long as I could, but she got she wouldn't do nothing. >> Somebody told us we could take her to the emergency room, drop her off up there. But like, why we going to drop her off up there? Cuz then you won't know what's going to happen to her then. >> Yeah. >> I don't. The moment officers finally got that door open and saw Stacy curled up in a fetal position, the officer knew they were past the point of asking questions. The couple was placed under arrest while medics rushed in to help a woman who looked like she hadn't been touched by sunlight or kindness in years. >> How long has she been here with y'all? >> Just, you know, daddy died about a year ago. >> Does she have a bathroom in that room that she's in? >> No, we was trying to give her baths and everybody's bathroom. Our bathroom. >> How many bathrooms are in this house? >> Just one. >> The just one bathroom. Like I said, we was in we in the process of trying to save up money to move out of this house cuz it ain't no good. >> Gotcha. Why? I mean, I see it's in pretty bad conditions in here. >> Stacy, we're going to take you see a doctor. Okay. >> What? >> Okay. All right, sweetheart. over. We're just going to have to hold my hand. >> Okay. >> Okay. >> Say, can you can you walk? >> Oh my. >> Come here. >> Can you walk? >> I don't see your hands. >> Oh my good. >> You okay? We got you. We can do that. >> Okay. >> Oh my. Oh my good. >> Hey, open the door. Open the door. My good. Come here, sweetheart. All right, take a seat right there. >> Have a seat, sweetheart. >> Sit right here. >> Yeah, we're we're going to get the kitty for you. Okay. >> Mhm. >> Let's go with you. Okay. >> Oh my. >> Okay. >> Oh my good. >> Oh gosh. All right. Well, I'm sorry. >> No, it's okay. They're nothing to be sorry about. Okay. >> Can you ever get that out? >> Pull it. >> Put your left foot in there. >> Left foot. Right foot. Right foot. >> Can I please get these in front of me? >> Right foot. >> Please. >> No. Right now. Right foot. >> Are you going to make me put your foot in there? >> No. Well, please just put it. >> Can I have some air? >> Please put your foot. >> Okay. Take the hood off of me again. >> You kind of I'm big. >> Try to scan a little more. >> Scoot. Scoot. >> Detectives began photographing the room and Stacy's body for evidence. The smell alone stopped officers in their tracks. A detail that said everything about how long Stacy had been left in those conditions. >> Before you, give me one second cuz we're going to have to get pictures. Okay. I got to get her blood pressure. >> You want to take pictures of her real quick before they stri her, brother? >> Absolutely. That's darling. >> I know it's on body cam. I just want to [ __ ] Well, there was one that was ti was tied up with a co. >> There's another one. As you go in there, the door that's right there. It's >> I Well, I went about to where she was. I could I couldn't hurt >> the smell. >> It's terrible. >> You have ID on her? >> She She does not have an ID, my understanding. >> Name and date of birth in the call notes is all we have. >> Yep. I >> know name. They We have a name and date of birth. I just don't have a positive ID. She never had an IV apparently. I don't know where she is. >> Arm out for me. >> Your arm out. >> Leave your arm right there. >> You want me to close the door? >> There's no bathroom. >> Was this key already in this door? >> Was the key in that door? >> Yeah. She was sitting in a chair, curled up in a ball, terrified. >> The officers were standing in a house that belonged to Stacy. Yet, she was the one locked away like she didn't matter. While the sister and brother-in-law, who were supposed to be looking after her, acted like they had been doing her a favor all along. >> Hey, darling. >> I'm Detective Burrell. >> How old is she? 33. >> Is that what they said? Yeah. >> Uh >> 519 1990 33. >> My blanket. >> Your blanket? >> Yeah. >> Where's your blanket at? >> Long. I ran it. I don't know if anybody came back. >> Be still for me, baby. >> You got that? I got >> Yeah. multiple times. I'm sure you can see it and all the stains down her leg. >> I'm sure. >> Another blanket. >> Yeah. >> We got no blanket. >> Huh? >> We need the children, too. >> Yeah. I'm going to get that. >> Whose house is this? >> It was their fathers who passed away a year ago. >> So, they stay here and they're supposed to be taking care of her >> and the sister. >> Um, okay. Hang on. Whatever. There's a >> yeah from the school bus kids to worry about now the girls the girl's sister >> well that help anyway they probably need to be involved anyway >> who who who called this >> her aunt her aunt >> that has not seen her >> that has not seen her in two years >> and knew she was locked in the room >> and knew she was locked in the room >> or potentially >> with the couple in custody officers scrambled to track down their two young children who were still at school, making sure they wouldn't come home to a house that had just been turned inside out by what their parents had allowed to happen. >> So, we need to get the names of the kids. >> That's correct. >> And then we need to go ahead and get the schools involved and pull those kids out of class if they're all defects. >> What are your kids' name? >> H Let me come to that side. Okay. >> What are y'all going to do to my kid? >> I just got to You're not here. So, I got to go make sure that they're going to be okay. >> I know. more time to take back in. >> What are their names? Do you have family members we can turn them over to? >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> He's probably on the way. He's from Dublin. >> Who's he? >> No. Go ahead. >> His daddy. >> His daddy. >> I just don't think this is fair cuz y'all ain't looking at my side of the story. >> We kind of >> All anybody ever cared about was her. Even my mom and daddy. >> Okay, Bobby. I >> He goes to that school again. I mean primary. >> Photograph her as well. >> Okay, give me one second. Let me write this down just to make sure I get it correct. What's her birthday? And she goes to what school? >> Midway Hills Primary. >> Midway Hills Primary. What? Since you said you know everybody's social, what's Emma social? >> I just know my husband. >> Okay, I got you. [clears throat] >> Okay, sweetie. And >> have two two kids. All right. [music] And what school is she at? That one right there. That where he was me. >> Oh, the one that's right here. Okay. >> After Stacy was taken to the hospital, the officers who remained at the scene couldn't shake what they had just witnessed. And when a supervisor arrived to debrief them, the details they shared painted a picture of suffering so severe it bordered on torture. >> Well, I don't know. I don't >> I'm not going to lie. Smell. Soon as I open up the door, >> I I was I was >> No, I threw up. >> I was breathing through my mouth. I >> Yeah, I tasted that. I threw up. >> I threw up my lunch that I was just eating in the front yard. >> So, from what she told me, her dad passed away about a year ago and the sisters say in their possession. That's the way she put for them to take care of. The parents used to live at this house. The parents died 9 months apart from each other. And uh so they stayed in the house. I asked if the sister is on been diagnosed with anything and she said no, she just suffered from seizures. I said, "Is she on any medication, but she has refused to take it for about a year." So, she went and got the medication. The medication is in the front seat of my car. It's expired. I believe Melissa made the comment that it's almost full. That's all I know about the girl that got taken to the hospital. Detectives started the interrogation with Bobby and right out of the gate, she painted Stacy as the problem. A woman who couldn't read, write, or bathe herself while carefully leaving out the part where she was the one in charge of making sure Stacy survived. >> Hey, how long have you lived at that house? >> Well, we all used to live on that place at church road. >> Okay. >> And then we moved over there. It's been I'm trying to remember how long we've been. I don't I don't My youngest was like not even one years old yet. So >> Okay. >> And she's eight now. >> So she's eight. So 7 years ago was about the time that you all moved over there >> with my mom and daddy. >> With your mom and dad. Okay. >> Dad was alive. >> Okay. So your mom and dad are deceased now. >> Yeah. See, I ain't I ain't never lived with nobody else except my mom and daddy. >> Okay. >> So I was still living with them. And >> how old are you today? >> Have to take care of them. I'm 31. Well, just had a birthday. 32. >> Yeah. 32. >> Okay. >> And I was helping I always help take care of my mom and daddy. I tried to help take care of my sister, but >> Okay. >> Everybody just don't understand that she ain't right. >> Okay. When you say she's not right, what do you mean? >> She she she don't know how to read. She don't know how to write. She don't know. >> And this is Stacy. >> Yes. She don't know how to give herself a bath. >> Okay. >> She can feed herself. >> Okay. cuz cuz I feed her every day. She could feed herself. >> Okay. Is [clears throat] she able to communicate? She's able to talk to you. Okay. >> She could talk but but some of her stuff she had imaginary people that she talked to and all. >> When her mom and Daddy died, >> right? >> Was already living there. >> Okay. So when her mama died, me and my wife had plans to move out before her mama died. Then her mama died, then we could move out. But we staying there with her. Then her dad died. Then when we stuck with her, stuck with the funeral. Everybody at the funeral said, "Oh, y'all going to take care of >> Bobby admitted she had thought about calling for help before, but claimed she was too afraid of losing her own kids. Yet buried in that excuse was the truth that she had taken control of Stacy's disability check and had no intention of letting that monthly income walk out the door. >> Did you think about calling like uh adult protective services or defects?" >> Yes, but like I said, I didn't want our kids to get took away just for that. I got you. [clears throat] So, you didn't call the state agency cuz you were afraid that that they may come in? >> I did try to call, you know, before it got too bad or whatever. Okay. I tried to call the um like the nursing homes, put it in the place, you know, >> but they said that I would have to um be her legal guardian or something. >> Okay. >> And >> so there were there was never any paperwork drawn up. There was no, you didn't go to probate court and become be assigned her guardian or nothing like that. >> The only thing I had over was her check, but I would it was have to pay the rent. >> Okay. [clears throat] >> And buy food. >> So, how were you put over her financial responsibility? How were you put in charge of that? Well, they I called to see if I could get that done because I figured, you know, since I'm trying to take care of her, I mean, they could buy her food and stuff that she needed. >> Okay. So, you so you can admit that that that she's probably not been properly taken care of under under your care. [clears throat] Is that fair to say? >> Well, if it makes me sound bad, I ain't I ain't a grand nothing like that. >> Do what now? I try I found her. >> Okay. >> Like I said, if she I tell her to come and get a bath and she won't go get one. What am I supposed to do? I ain't going to sit down and beat nobody. >> When asked about how Stacy ate or used the bathroom while locked in that room, Bobby's answers kept shifting. >> But if she's locked in that room with the coat hanger with the wire hanger through the lock, how does she get to the refrigerator to eat? >> I take her food to her. >> You take it to her. Okay. >> Yeah, she eats and drinks stuff all the time. >> Okay. So, the other door that's got the cord tied to it, tell me >> where the bathroom is. >> Okay. So, where does she use the bathroom? >> She won't go to the bathroom anyway cuz I tried to take her. She won't go. She's not a person that's going to walk to the bathroom by herself. >> Okay. >> She wasn't [clears throat] my mom and daddy. She's never been since she was born. >> Okay. >> So, where does she use the bathroom at? >> Heck, I don't know. >> Just wherever she uses it. I guess, like I said, I didn't go in there that much because she did try to jump on me one time in front of my kid. >> Okay. >> So, that's why I know I should do something sooner than now, but I can't take back what's been done. >> So, you're home all day long? >> Yeah. >> So, if she needs something, she can call out to you or >> And I give her something to drink and eat, >> right? How many times a day do you give her something to eat and drink? >> Maybe twice. >> Maybe twice. When's the last time you actually laid eyes on your sister? >> I've seen her the other day. I see her from time to time. >> Okay. [clears throat] >> But she don't ever try to talk to me. >> So, do you see her like every couple days or do you see her every day or do you see her once a week? >> Probably every couple days. >> Every couple days >> I see her. But she's always want to stay in that room, >> right? >> And she won't come out unless I put her food in there. >> So, if you see her every couple days, how do you put her food in there? >> We got a heater right here in the living room. >> Okay. And I set the food and drink on it and she'll sneak out that bedroom and get it. >> So you go into one room and set her food down on that the living room. >> Yes. And she'll come out and get it. She >> and then she'll come out of her bedroom. >> And then sometimes like here lately it's been kind of scary. But that's why I had was seriously getting ready to call somebody cuz >> she would go banging on them doors and start cussing at me. What was she saying when she was cussing at you? >> She's telling me to get out of the house. >> The detective showed Bobby the photographs, the state of Stacy's body, the visible signs of prolonged neglect, evidence that was impossible to look away from and impossible to explain. >> When's the last time you actually laid eyes on her to be able to make a light >> somewhat of an assessment that says, "Hey, this room stinks or >> Mhm. >> He's been messed up at work cuz I'm stressed out at work." >> Mhm. stressed out at home, worried about stuff and everything. >> Worried about my daddy, >> worried about money, just worried about everything. >> Look, I get it. Yeah. [music] >> And I don't go in there sometimes. >> It's on her chest. I don't know what it is. It's I don't know if it's truly I don't know if it's if it's food. >> Now, here's her hands. Okay. Here's her fingernails. Mhm. >> And all this, you know, it's on her abdomen. [music] You notice anything else about this picture? >> What's this right here? >> That right there. >> Yeah. >> Why is she so skinny? I feed her every day. >> It's my point. Why is she so skinny? If you're feeding her every day, >> I am feeding her every day. >> That's her pelvic girdle. I don't know why she's that skinny. >> There's bruising. [music] >> It hurts my feelings cuz I feed her every day. >> Down here. There's a big There's [music] uh brown mass or something. I don't know if it's uh I don't know if it's I don't know if I can just tell you that it's not normal. Whatever it is, [clears throat and cough] these are fingernails. [music] You know, >> that's [clears throat] why I cut them before, too. >> Yeah, >> she's crazy. >> So, she's using the bathroom somewhere. Y'all didn't smell anything? >> Well, I don't smell a little bit, >> you know. Now, here's the other side of her knee all bruised up. So, her body's breaking down. She's whatever. I mean, somebody wasn't going in that room and checking on her to make sure that >> I was >> that she was You can't tell me. You can't convince me that you were in this room, going in her room and looking in on her. >> Detectives described Stacy's condition as someone who had been left to disappear. And as they walked Bobby through the images of matted hair and skin peeling from her feet, it became impossible to believe that anyone who claimed to love her could have let things reach this point. >> These are all sores on her right hip area. If I had to describe that picture of her laying on her back in that [clears throat] on that hospital treatment bed, [music] to me, she looks like a breathing corpse. I've seen people who have died that are in better physical condition than she is. I'm trying to understand how and why she got in that condition if you all were her caregivers. I didn't sign a fair caregiver. >> I just said that I was trying to help take care of her. I didn't mean for her to look like that. >> Understand? >> I can't sit there and wait on her hand and foot like mom and daddy. >> This is her hair all matted. We had to I say we the nursing staff cut all this out. Um, these are these are legs. One of the things that stands out to me is how big the kneecaps are and how skinny the upper the lower part of the thigh is. I mean, it just, you know, she's got some abrasions on her feet, skin's peeling on her feet. >> Bobby finally broke down and admitted she should have made the call for help. But even in that moment of supposed remorse, she couldn't stop talking about how hard her own life had been and how much she had lost. As if Stacy's suffering was just another burden she had been forced to carry. >> How do we fix this? >> Because I love her. I really do love my sister. It ain't nothing like that against her because daddy loved her more and all. >> Well, [clears throat] I'll I'll throw this out there to you. >> Well, mama dy's gone now. >> If if if you love her as you say you do, that's a strange way to show you love her. You know what I mean? Can you agree with that? >> Yes, sir. I said, you know, >> so her money was being used for her care, her food, >> rent, >> obviously for part of the rent, part of the lights and >> stuff like that. >> Yeah. Her medicines. So my point being to you is we all have different challenges, but that's unacceptable. this care and treatment when you all decided that it wasn't you weren't able to take care of her, you needed to make that call then. So then the question is why didn't you? >> Like I said, I was scared and I didn't want my own kids to get took away because the way stuff looked in the house. I didn't told you this. I don't know. >> In the end, Bobby and Jerry Barber were indicted on multiple counts, including exploiting a disabled adult, false imprisonment, and failing to provide basic care. Stacy was finally receiving the medical attention she had been denied for so long, while the couple's children were placed with family.
