We just put a missing person out right now just so we can try to locate them. You know, >> you left the truck here Friday all day. >> Who drove the truck up in the mountains? >> Nobody drove it. I towed it up. >> Oh, you towed it up there. Which vehicle? >> My dog. >> Allan. Dude, come on. Did you burn a body? Come on. >> Some people believe they have gotten away with the perfect crime. But what happens when they have no idea that officers are already closing in on them? >> Said I was going to do something. >> As long as everybody's okay. >> My brother's 10 years younger than I am, but I've known him for a lot of years. >> It is for conspiracy to commit first degree. What? >> These were the moments when suspects had no idea officers were about to arrest them. We began with a case where a man was struck by a car on a highway. The driver fled believing he had gotten away unaware that officers would soon discover his identity. >> Your vehicle is evidence of >> I'm being so so so the passing out thing that was >> Well, I'm being honest with you like I don't remember >> how was the guy or the the person. On [music] March 3rd, 2024, officers from Georgia received an emergency call after 78-year-old Charles Johnson was struck by [music] a car while riding his bicycle on a highway. When officers arrived, the driver had already fled the scene, but he had left something behind. Witnesses and evidence that could help investigators identify him. >> Hang tight, partner. Hang tight, partner. >> Hang tight. We're here. You mean we're call >> us? Okay. Oh, don't get >> I tried to get the license plates, but they were all over the place. >> They lost control right here. >> Yeah. >> And then tried to re uh like get back on the road and then tore out. >> Where did they him? >> They hit him behind him. He was going across. >> He was on the sidewalk. >> He was on the sidewalk. Oh, he went right on the sidewalk. almost hurt. >> The car went up on the sidewalk here. >> The car put came up on the sidewalk here. >> Right up here. >> Looked like he almost lost control right here. Tried to come down right on it and the guy right from behind. >> So apparently he came back on the sidewalk back there. Um it looks like he might have up some of the uh the grass over there. the half vehicle. Yeah. And then they said he came back on here and smacked the guy on the sidewalk. >> So, is that it? >> Should have damage right there. Um, >> and that tire looked flat. >> Yeah, it looks like he left some scrape marks on the sidewalk. They line up with the depressions that I'm seeing in the uh dirt up there. I'm going to grab some photos. Uh, where's the last block at? >> That was at Victory and Kellogg going out of the county. >> Put that out. >> No, not yet. Given the severity of his condition, Charles was rushed to the hospital. However, his condition worsened on the way and he passed away before reaching the hospital. Meanwhile, officers began analyzing nearby surveillance footage and examining vehicle fragments left at the scene. Their investigation allowed them to trace the vehicle involved, but the suspect remained unaware that the consequences of his actions were about to catch up with him. >> What's going, man? How are you? >> Not too bad. >> Good. Good. I'm Sergeant Lupus. Sorry. Need to get your feet out, man. Don't worry about it. >> I'm Sergeant Lup from the sheriff's office. Yes, sir. >> Um I guess that's your sister. >> She said you drive a silver Q50 Infinity. Yes, sir. >> Okay. Understand that I have very limited knowledge. Okay. I was just asked to come out here and talk with you a little bit about Were you possibly involved in a wreck the other day. Um cuz I know there's damage to your mirror. >> No, sir. >> Okay. >> No, I did that probably about a month ago. It's a neighborhood over off of like Shalifford. Okay. Was going to my buddy's house and I wasn't paying attention. I mailbox. >> Okay. So, >> Okay. Is your car here right now? >> It is. >> Would you mind if I look at it real quick? I don't want to search it or nothing. I just want to look at the exterior. You cool with that? >> Yeah. >> I'll follow you, man. is a little messed up. >> No, you're fine. You're fine. Do you mind if I step in here? >> You're okay, man. >> Man, dude, would you mind if I grab my camera and just take a couple pictures of this? >> You cool with that? >> Yeah. >> Okay, let me just go grab just hang out here for a second. I'll come grab it. I'll be right back. >> At least stay in the drive, man. Don't be out in the rain. >> Yes, sir. >> This is to try and figure out what you can say you were were not involved. >> Um, so like we'll I'm going to grab a couple more pictures and I'll try and get some information to explain to you a little bit better here in a second. Okay. >> And you said this thing's been here when when did this happen? >> Three or four weeks ago? >> Three or four weeks ago? >> Yeah. >> You haven't driven it since then? >> Today's the 6th. Okay. So, this is where you start being honest with me, dog. >> Yes, sir. >> All right. I'm going to be cool with you. You got to be cool with me. >> Yes, sir. >> All right. And I'm going to be honest with you the whole step of the way. You got to be honest with me. >> Yes, sir. >> That's your car right there in the third. >> Yes, sir. It is going on right. >> Yes, sir. It is. But I know exactly what stretch of roadway it was on the time that picture was taken. The picture was taken about an hour previous to that on the other end of Eagle Drive Town Parkway with no damage in the car. It wasn't a mailbox. I already know those. I'm not going to ask questions I don't know the answers to. >> Yes, sir. >> I need to know what happened. The wreck. >> Okay. >> And now they can win game. Okay. >> I need you to be honest with me cuz honesty goes a lot further with anybody than lying. >> Yes, sir. The shocking circumstances behind the investigation left 24year-old Joseph Tilman in shock. As he tried to explain what had happened, investigators were about to uncover more than they expected. >> What happened? The last thing I'll tell you, honest truth, the last thing I remember is I was going down that hill by that assisted living and I like legitimately I was I had a friend in the car and he looked over and my head was in between the seat and the door and I was just passed out. >> I had nothing to drink. I had nothing in my system. >> Okay. But I he looked over and I was passed out. And then whenever I woke back up, I was coming up towards Hobgood and he was like, "Hey dude, you just hit a curb and your car up." And I'm like, "Oh my god." >> Okay. >> So went back to my house. >> Okay. Have you heard anything in the media of what happened? I am >> not. >> Okay. >> Your friend that was with you, they can we can talk with them and kind of cooperate some of that story. >> Cherokee. >> Yeah. No, I mean he was in the car with me. He said that whenever I woke up, whenever I came to, he was like, "You just ran up on the curb." >> Okay. Did he mention anything else that you ran up on? >> No. >> Okay. Um, so here's what I need to do. Your vehicle is evidence of a hit run. >> Okay. And I'm I'm being full disclosure with you. I'm trying to talk to you and be honest with you. I'm not trying to play any games with you. Okay. >> I appreciate you. >> Um, you are the suspect of a run case where somebody was injured. Okay. And obviously I have all the the camera footage in that area and it was just a matter of figuring out where you were and coming and talking to you. >> I understand. >> Okay. Um >> no idea. >> So I am going to make some >> I assume that I just ran up on the curb. >> Okay. I'm assuming it's probably not drivable at this point. >> No. >> Okay. >> Where did you So So after you came to and your friend kind of told you what happened, you said you came straight home. >> Yeah. Look at him. All right, let me fall. No, >> I need to sit down. >> Sit down, though. >> Relax, bro. God damn, dude. >> I would not have just left if I knew that was the case, man. >> At this point, officers were not convinced by Joseph's claim that he had suddenly become ill. As they pressed him for answers, the questioning only became more intense. >> Obviously, with these kind of things, understand people lie to me. Okay? >> Yeah, people lie to me all the time. >> It also makes things 10 times worse. it does make things 10 times worse. And that's why I kind of led with what I led with. Okay. Um, so things I have to consider when working these investigations. Okay. I have to consider reckless driving, aggressive driving, DUI, obviously hit run, passing school buses, improper passing, a whole litany of traffic violations that occurred. One of which is distracted driving. Okay. I know you said you were passed out. >> Um, are you sure your phone was not involved in any of that? >> I think I was probably on my phone. >> You're probably on your phone? Yeah, I think I got a text from my girlfriend and I looked down and wasn't paying attention. But like I'm like I'm being 100%. >> So So the the passing out thing that was >> Well, I'm being sure honest with you like I don't remember going up on the curb and coming off of it. >> Okay. >> So >> were you looking down at your phone? Were you looking up at your phone? Was Do you think that had something to do with it? >> I like I like honest to God like my friend said he looked over and that my head was like this, but I don't like I feel like that would have just been me how I usually like been just relaxing. But I don't know if it was like the shock of going up or whatever, but like I don't like I don't remember from the assisted living home to getting to like Hopkia Park. >> And you think some of that was you reading or sending a text to your girlfriend? >> Yes. >> Distracted driving. >> Uh yeah. Can I like call my dad real quick and like at least tell him kind of what's going on? >> Like >> I'll let you do that. >> Okay. Just not right this second. Okay. >> Let me make a phone call. I'm just going to step right there. if you would just hang out right there. Again, >> I have to keep eyes on you. You're not under arrest. Yes, sir. >> Um, obviously you I told you you're a suspect, so you're kind of being detained right now, but you're not under arrest. Okay. You don't see any bracelets on or handcuffs on or anything like that. Yes, sir. >> While officers waited for another patrol to head to the home of Joseph's friend, who had been in the car, Joseph asked a question that left them even more intrigued. >> How was the guy or the the person? >> I never said you person. >> I saw it on the news. I lied to you about that. >> Okay. Uh, critical. >> Okay. And again, I'm being honest with you, man. >> I ruined my life. >> No, don't. >> I like >> I I I can I can I can kind of sympathize with where you're at, man. I can I can I >> I can try to understand. But I'm telling you, you're being cool with us. That goes a long way. Yes, sir. Okay. And that that says a lot to a judge and a jury if it ever gets that far. Yes. >> Okay. Yes, sir. >> So, let's just let's let's work together and figure out how we work through this thing. Okay. >> Okay. >> Um, like I said, you've been cool so far. You're on the right track. >> I know there's been a couple discrepancies so far. I'll let those slide, but moving forward, I would make sure that those discrepancies start to disappear cuz >> again, I'm standing here because I already have a lot of answers to this. Okay. >> Yes, sir. Yes, sir. >> My captain is about to be here. He's going to hang out with you. >> I knocked for a minute, but I guess you didn't hear me. >> I heard him barking, but I was on the toilet. >> Okay. >> You probably know why I'm here. Yeah. >> Okay. Um, you mind telling me just >> Yeah, I'll give you a rundown. You want the whole day or >> Sure. I mean, if you give me 24-hour pre-trip if you're with him that long. >> No, but I'll do it from lunchtime till the end of that day. Okay. >> So, we went to lunch at game day. >> Okay. >> Around like 12, I think. >> Okay. >> We were probably there for an hour and a half, 2 hours. And then we left from there, went to Park View by Longhorns and our buddy lives there. We were getting money cuz he worked for him the day before. >> Okay. And then we were going to Chevron and we're going down uh past hillside. >> Uhhuh. >> And we're going and he kind of veers towards the curb and I look over at him and he's just like kind of out of it sitting in a seat >> like it was I don't know. And then I like kind of look at him and then we slam the curb pop up on it >> and he like comes back too. I'm like are you okay? And I heard the tire pop everything. >> Yeah. So, he takes it to his house and then that's when I just found out earlier today what y'all were there for. >> Okay. >> With the evidence gathered so far, the case seemed far from being solved. But a month later, a surprising call from Joseph's friend, identified as Remington Mole, gave investigators a new lead. When Remington was brought in for questioning, investigators were about to hear his side of the story. >> I think I told you that the other day that this thing was spiraling >> that night, I was like, I'm done with this. >> Yeah. And and the deeper we get into it, the more evidence we find. It's It's getting crazy. So, I'm happy you sus. I want to start I want you to tell me from like the moment you woke up that morning. >> Okay. >> To the minute you went to bed that night. >> Okay. >> Okay. To the best of your knowledge, the best of your recollection, walk me through what happened that day. March 30. Okay. >> Is the day clear. >> Um I know you probably refer to >> Joseph as Joe. >> Joey. >> Okay. >> Yeah. I woke up that morning at 3027 Iron Hill Way in my parents house. Yep. I think I hung out there throughout the morning, just normal day. Uh, and then Joey text me. He's like, "Let's go get lunch before." So, I met him at game day between 12:00 and 12:30. We sat there from probably 12:30 to 2:00 2:30. In that time, I think I had two Michel love ultras, two Vegas bombs, and I believe that he had two Tito Sprites, and I think he had two as well. >> What day of the week was this? This was Sunday, March 3rd. Sunday, >> we finished up the game there around 2:30. When we left, we went I think that's it's across from Wendy's on town parkway. >> Okay. >> What happened? >> He went in there and bought a box of stuff called Galaxy Gas. >> All right. What happened? >> Uh we leave there, uh go to Chris's, which is at Park View. >> Uh on the way there, he was the Galaxy Gas. >> Okay. Uh when we left Chris's, we go up to Town Lake. I think we turn around in Town Lake. We're going to Chevron. >> Well, continue. >> Okay. So, we were going down the Parkway and that's when we go past uh Rose Creek and we're coming down the hill towards the accident >> and we're going down and that's when I start feeling get close to the curb and I look over right before the intersection. He's passed out. >> At this point, Remington came forward again admitting that he had left out important details. Investigators suspected that Joseph may have coordinated his story with him before officers arrived. But the new information revealed another side of the story that officers had yet to uncover. >> I look up as we're going through the intersection. I can see the bicycle, but it was so fast I looked back at Jabby shaking him. And that's when he the guy. I kept shaking him. He came back too and he's like, "What just happened?" I was like, "You somebody I was like, "Turn around." And he's like, "I'm not turning around. My life's over." Go up to the intersection of Chevron. Turns right. goes down past the back entrance of Hobgood and turns left in that first neighborhood. I think that's where he turned around, heads back to Chevron, turns left and goes in the back entrance to Welsley and goes to his dad's house. Okay. >> Pulls in the driveway and then puts the car in the garage, goes inside, tells his dad that he just somebody. >> Did you go in with him? >> I did. >> Okay. >> Uh they go outside, continue looking at the car, and then come back in a few minutes later and his dad's like, "Okay." Like, "Are you sure you hit somebody?" And I was like, "I'm sure he didn't." and I watched it. So his dad's like, "Let's get in the car." We get in the car, go out the Welssley entrance on Rose Creek. >> Okay. >> Turn left, go back up to the intersection of Town Lake, turn left and go back past the accident and see cops and everything there. >> And where was everybody seen? >> I was in the front passenger seat. Joe was laying in the back. >> He was laying in the back >> when they when they drove by. I believe he laid down in the back. >> Okay. >> Any reason for that or not? I think he was just freaking out. His dad was like, "Well, we're not 100% sure that you did it or not." And then I think that's one thing his dad I think was kind of just like in disbelief for the whole situation. And then I mean I don't know how a father is mine would have probably taken me back and out of the seat of the car at the scene. So I mean I don't know. I think it's more he just didn't want to believe that his son had done it. >> Okay. So it's uh I mean it's now the 20th. >> Yeah. So, it's been >> Oh, yeah. >> 17 17 days. >> Yeah. >> So, between the 3rd and now >> Mhm. >> Was there conversations between Joey and his dad and you about not saying anything? >> When officers asked Remington if anyone knew the truth, his unexpected answer provided investigators with further evidence supporting their case. >> Between me and Jimmy on text, nothing really, his dad put us in a group message and said, "We don't speak of this." >> And dad sent that? >> Yes. Do you know dad's number? I know you don't have your phone, but >> actually I do have it memorized. >> What do you remember when Joey got home and you interact with him? >> Uh I had been at my girlfriend's Saturday, Saturday night. I got home on Sunday. Um sometime after lunch, was watching golf on TV and was actually taking a nap on the couch. >> Joey and Remington came in. They both seemed to be a little bit shook up. Uh and Joey said, "Dad, I've been in an accident." Dad. >> And my first response was, "Are you okay? You and Remington okay?" "Yeah, Dad, we're okay." I said, "Tell me what happened." Uh, he and Remington told me the exact same story. That um I didn't know where they had been previously. I didn't know anything about the, you know, going to game day or I didn't know. All he told me was that they were coming down Lake Parkway. um that Joey got lightheaded for a minute. Uh that they were playing the m I remember saying they were playing the music really loud. Uh and that they hit the curb and that and that was when when I took Remington to get it struck. That is when I said, "You know what? Let's let's drive by that area." And you told me that day. And you know, I go up down that road all the time, but um I said, "Let's drive by that area. to see you know what happened. Uh fairly early in the evening, my daughter, we were sitting there watching TV and she said, "Oh my god, Dad, they arrested a guy for the run." >> After allegations that Joseph's father had influenced his account of events, he was called in for questioning. Although he appeared willing to help, investigators began to suspect he was leaving something out. >> What? And she said, "Yeah, they" She said, "I don't remember the girl's name." That's the daughter-in-law. She said, "I'm in this small group with this girl." And it was her father-in-law that got hit and they've arrested somebody for this. And so, at that point, I I I didn't know what to think. I I I you know, I I didn't know if I was being told the truth, if they were not telling truth. I just I did not know what to think because somebody had arrested her. In my mind, I was thinking maybe like this other young man hit this guy and maybe Joey after the fact. I I just I didn't know. Okay. >> And my mindset was I just need to sleep on this and figure out the best course of action in the morning. >> Text message conversations between y'all. Do you remember some of the text message conversations that you had either in a group between the three of y'all or separately between you and Rington or >> Not until later that evening? >> Okay. >> Joey texted me a message about traffic cameras. >> Okay. Um, and that piqued my curiosity and I I knew that um, you know, I assumed that there was a that it was a school camera because it was right there by basking kind of in a school zone and that caused me to kind of look at something about a school camera, but that was that was all I recall. I want to focus from these two messages that first message in that bracket. Is that sent from you or is that sent from which this one? >> Yeah. Is that from you or is that? >> In the end, Joseph was arrested and charged with side by vehicle and run, false statements, reckless driving, and driving under the influence. The court imposed 20 years in prison with 3 years confinement and 17 years [music] probation. In the next case, a family member raised concerns about a newborn who had not been seen for some time. And that led to an investigation that would soon take a disturbing turn. >> She was pregnant, you know, he had said that he didn't want to be with her. He didn't want the baby. He didn't want to shoot >> based off what happened. Injuries were prior to meaning she was still alive when the injuries occurred because we know your story is not correct. [music] Okay. On September 12th, 2024, officers from New Mexico received a report from a family who said that two of their relatives, Brianna Stallings and Manuel Gilento, had a daughter who had not been seen for some time. When detectives called the source back to confirm a few details, they were directed to a house where they believed the couple might [music] be staying, but they had no idea that their visit would lead to a much deeper investigation. >> Hi. >> Hello. >> Sergeant for Aurelia. >> I'm Aurelia. >> Aelia, can we come in? >> Yeah. >> Are you Are you here alone? Um, >> there's a BU bus, so don't get spiked. You're not pick my daughter-in-law in 20 minutes. >> What is it? >> My daughter-in-law. >> Oh, you need to get your daughter-in-law. >> You speak Spanish? >> Uh, if you speak Spanish, >> we have one that speaks a little bit. >> Speak Spanish. >> Hi. How are you, sir? >> Very good. May you begin? >> Nice to meet you, Manuel. >> Hi. >> How are you? >> Good. How are you? >> How's it going? >> Good. How are you, sir? Good. Is um anyone else here? >> No. >> Yes. >> How are you going, sir? Hi, >> buddy. >> What's your name? >> Do you remember me, Manuel, from out there at your house on Ker? >> I come to wash my clothes. >> Okay. But do you remember me from the other day over the weekend? Okay. >> Oh, okay. Okay. >> I'm in the living room. >> Okay. Hey, where's Briana and Manuel at? >> Oh, okay. Okay. Hey, whose car is is this blue Mazda here? >> That's Manuel's car. Okay. >> Is it not running right now? >> I think it used to belong to her. >> Okay. >> Oh, okay. Hard question for you. But do you know if Brianna had a baby? >> What I heard already? Yes, I know that happened already. Yeah. The first day, the first day the officer detective were over there. There were another one. It was a tall officer. >> Okay. >> They know another one. And on the second day, you were there. >> Okay. >> Yeah. >> But do you know the circumstances between what happened or >> Well, I heard something about an idea. I don't know. I don't know who this girl I don't know who I don't know her. >> You don't know who? >> Brianna. >> Okay. Officers arrived at the home of Manuel's father. His father seemed uneasy about their relationship, but there was more to it than officers initially realized. >> When I know that he was with my son because one day they appear over there and he said here I don't understand uh that girl and he told me well it's a it's a prank. We were together to school high school. Yeah. But he had a problem and she don't hear nobody they take care of her but she's pregnant she's pregnant and from that day I don't know nothing you know like father because you're going to have a lot of problem we are going to have a lot of trouble with a father of dy with a family I don't want problem with my home I don't want you here >> you told him where to live someday okay sometime they were going over El sometime I don't know where he went because he could not see because he was in the car and people would be staying >> he was in this car. >> Yeah. Like I told you me he went over there maybe to three time but only days not leaving with me. >> So when >> so when she was pregnant they were driving this car here? >> Yes. >> Okay. >> And then did you know if the baby had been born? Did you ever see the baby? >> They were were together. We were together and uh what I told was this belong to to to her to her family not to my son to her family. >> She didn't talk to her family. >> I told and I told to Yes. I told her I don't like it. I don't like this girl. She's already almost had a baby going to bring it to her house. You're going to have a lot of problem. You're going to have a lot of um and what happened there. There's that way that I know it. But uh like I told you, I don't have relation with her, with her family, with nobody in that family. I mean, nothing with you. >> So when when she had the baby, where were they living? >> Were they living with you? >> I don't know where they I don't know where they will live because they go in the car. >> Inside the house, officers interviewed Manuel's mother. When questioned about the events, she revealed something unexpected. >> It's not that baby than my son. to New Mexico and she's pregnant. >> Okay. >> The father that the baby is in Texas, but I don't know what place the text. She's pregnant when my son meet her. >> Okay. >> So, the baby is not in my son. >> Okay. Okay. That's understandable. We got that. And just do you know when she had the baby? I know she may have you may not have been around, but that's what we're trying to see when the baby was. >> I don't know. when you and in September when October I don't know I'm not want to lie because I'm not remember exactly when the day >> we're not here to tell you you're lying or not just we're just trying to see what you remember what you know >> August or September >> August or September >> August or September >> last year. >> Last year. Yes. >> Then and then what happened? You heard about the baby and then baby went gone. I'm see the baby when I'm here for a week. I'm thinking the baby is one month or two months. I'm not remember. I'm here for only couples of days >> and I remember and see the baby >> and I'm back to Virginia and >> Virginia the state. >> Mhm. >> Okay. >> And I don't know what's happened next. >> Did you see the baby while you were here? >> When >> did you come back and visit or No. When the baby was born? Yes. When the baby is born, I'm coming. Maybe after two months, the baby born and I see the baby. Did >> you seen the baby? >> Okay. Was the baby in this house or where'd you see the baby at? >> The baby and the wrench. >> With only limited information from Manuel's parents, the case was becoming increasingly difficult to piece together. Days later, investigators called members of Brianna's family again. When they noticed a missed call and returned it, the conversation immediately drew their attention. >> The thing about it is like that's not the real father of the baby. >> Okay? He is on the birth certificate. The real father of the baby, I don't know his name. He was in Delhart, Texas. >> Okay. >> And then, you know, the only reason that's kind of everything kind of worries me is just she fell off and like she just didn't talk to nobody and then this kind of like happened, you know. Um >> do you know why she's kind of um disassociated herself from other people? So I know that whenever she was pregnant and it was at the end of her pregnancy I had lived at Carl's festival which I moved probably about a couple probably about a year year ago I had moved um she really made me were fighting so bad he he said he didn't want the baby. He has a son and I'm pretty sure that he had got that baby taken away because he stood out of the base and so he doesn't have that kid no more. Like the mom has the kid. I don't really know Manny that much. Um, Brianna, she lived with my mom for 2 years. She lived with me for a year and a half. Um, I've always been like trying to help her out and stuff. Well, when she was pregnant, you know, he had said that he didn't want to be with her. He didn't want the baby. He doesn't want a kid. That's why he got rid of his other kid. So, it kind of worries me on that part, you know. And plus, he's also on fentanyl. Like, he's he's he's a user. Um her particularly the only thing that I've known that she's done is like smoke and do anything farther than that I'm not sure about. So it kind of worries me on that. Um she had spoke with me whenever the baby all the way up to the baby was about a month old. She had sent me a picture of the baby when the baby was first born and then a month later she had sent me a picture of the neck of that she dropped off. She didn't talk to nobody about anything. We never seen her. My mom had seen her probably about 3 months ago inside Walmart. There was no baby and she looked like she was out. She was inside the Walmart with Manny and she just put her head down cuz they know. >> As the investigation progressed, officers located the couple. When they arrived at the house, Manuel revealed a tragic accident while they were asleep. But what Manuel told investigators would take the case in an unexpected direction, raising new questions about what had really happened. >> Did you have a crib for the baby? And where was the thing? in the room. >> Okay. So, would you and Brianna just, you know, that's where you would I'm not knocking you as far as parents. So, you you had a crib in there for the baby to sleep, obviously. Um, >> so how does it look that the baby was in in the car asleep with you and Briana the day that Brianna says that she accidentally would be a suffocation? So accidentally suffocated behind. My question is is why weren't you guys what what caused you to be out of the house and in the car versus just in the house? Does that make sense? >> So what in your mind caused that? You got you fighting with your mom, your brothers, you and you know it's understandable if that's the thing, you know, one of the guys out here was like, you know, it's a it's a baby. Baby's crying. Maybe the baby was, you know, crying. you know, he was just they're just trying to be a respectful to everybody that lived there. I just need to understand cuz help me understand like how you guys went from the house to the car. You how did you guys go through the hell to the land? didn't remember it. I think I remember the baby just being really fussy and was like, you know what, this let's just go outside to say she wouldn't stop crying. We were trying to get stop crying and she was being fussy. So, we went outside and we tried like maybe going into the car and then turn it on maybe like with the help of a car being turned on and then vibration or the help of going to sleep. See, I can I can understand that. I mean, now that you explain it, I understand, you know what? I had something and he would not see. >> At this point, the couple's explanation failed to convince investigators about what had happened. As officers looked deeper into their story, inconsistencies began to emerge, leading them to press Manuel for more answers. >> So, what I learned to do just as a parent survive, you know, this tired, wife is tired, he's baby wouldn't stop crying. I wound up putting him in his car seat and driving him around the neighborhood until he fell asleep and then you fell asleep. I kept him in his car seat and put him in his crib. So, I get that. I understand the vibration there is what helped us get over that. But my god, man. That damn kid of mine, he won't stop. I was like, he try and everything. So it it's hard to be young parents and it's hard to like there were many nights I didn't have a whole lot of patience. But tell our neighborhood watch was spot on in the neighborhood I lived in because I was out there with my son driving around the car like a weirdo just just so he would fall asleep just so I could get 20 minutes of just sleep. So I understand that tiredness said like parenting and you know babies are exhausting. They they just they just are like when I asked them about it she just kind of you just open the car. Well, it doesn't make a lot of sense that he lived in a car. Like they were living in the house and brought the baby up at the car just for the same reason that he just You see kind of where like we're not asking questions to get in trouble. We're just asking questions so that we kind [music] of frame this and we understand like how it is that this happens. I mean, does any time that you investigate something, it's who, what, when, where, how, and then kind of an explanation of why this happened, I mean, you know, and then some of the answers that we were getting are like just not answers that fit. >> As investigators continued pressing Manuel for answers, he finally revealed what had happened. His account of the events would leave investigators shocked. I get that your family has kind of struck me in the way. >> Okay. >> Okay. And at some point Brandy woke up and then what happened after she had woken up? She tried to wake up the baby and then she was she freaked out and she got like you know like what [clears throat] she said no like she started shaking and she wasn't saying anything. So as I was like please like try to pick her up and like try to like maybe like like shake it a little bit and like don't shake it like too [ __ ] hard. But she did and she wasn't getting ups and that's when I should have like freaked out or like so we looked up on online to see like how to do uh CPR for my baby. >> Yeah. I tried doing CPR but nothing was working. >> Mhm. >> Did you try to call 911? >> Probably not. >> Okay. So about how long did you try doing CPR? >> [ __ ] At least about an hour. >> And then we had And you know this is funny. We appreciate you talking to me, but then we have >> Okay. So what did you bring again? >> We wanted to find out but she got me out. Yes. She's caught out first music. >> What happened? That's when we came out here. >> Was the baby Did you lose the baby in a backpack? Did you put the baby in in in something? >> Uh, she died. Without showing any emotion, Manuel revealed small details about what had happened after the accident, offering a disturbing account of the events >> where you roughly showed us that's where you remember to the best of your knowledge is where >> did you and Brandon ever come back out here? I know Brianna uh her family, they hadn't seen the baby. That's kind of what got this ball in motion. But do you remember any of that? Do you remember Brianna telling her family anything or just saying anything at all? >> And then after the baby was buried, what did you guys do? I just went back to the car and he was just shocked after me, you know. >> So, you guys are freaked out. Did you Did you tell your mom what it happened or your brother when it happened? >> Did they ever ask you where the baby was? Because that would be something a mom a grandmother would ask like, "Hey, where's the baby?" Did you eventually tell her what happened? So, she just never asked where. >> The couple agreed to show officers where they had left the victim. However, it was already nighttime and poor visibility made the search difficult. When officers returned the following day, they made a shocking discovery. >> Is that the tree you're talking? No. >> The one right in the hot spot >> right there. Yeah, she's buried in >> that one just sticking out there like a big old pimple >> with all those sort of thing. >> She's underneath the rock. >> Yeah, she's underneath it. Yeah, >> those rocks. >> Take the light off for a second so we can just keep like plastic all the way down the boat. It's going to be right where all these spiders are. So, I need to be careful. >> Go ahead. Oh, you kick. >> Go ahead. You're fine. Okay. Initially, given the circumstances, officers could not arrest Brianna and Manuel immediately. They would have to wait for the autopsy results, a process [music] that could take months. But while they waited, investigators began gathering statements from members of Brianna's family, uncovering new details about the case. >> Which of your sisters would she be closest to? >> None of you. >> So you and you was the one that was always there for her and raised her. And >> who's her mother? >> Her mom passed away. That was my little sister. >> That was your little sister. >> Passed away in uh 20 buried just 3 4 years ago. >> Oh man. I'm sorry to hear that. >> Thank you. She died of a spider bite. A black little bite. Really? >> Yeah. Never got treated. And when she did, it was too late. >> Yeah. >> Okay. And so you raised Brianna and Brian? >> Brian lived with us for a while, maybe for a year when he was younger. I would say 15, 16. >> Okay. Yeah. >> Does Brian have a relationship with any of your sisters? Brian. Honestly, none of us really see Brian at all. I didn't even know Brian was at the hospital dying a couple of months ago until one of my sisters told me about it. Uh I speak to one of them, Sandra Ramirez. I don't know if you're aware of her. Very not so just high and by >> that we should be locked up. They should be lost because Brianna wasn't taking her to her doctor's visits or anything. >> So, it's still under investigation. There's still a lot of questions we have. Okay. >> Well, what are they saying? >> Again, we haven't really spoke to them. Okay. >> Um, >> they're going to be gone. If you go find them, they're going to be gone. He's had family in Mexico. He has family. His mom's from Mexico. They have family from him. I will keep that in me. So, >> I've been in contact with the district attorney's office. Okay. >> So, Ruby, I just want you to know it's hard to go full the charges not knowing full details. >> Weeks later, the autopsy revealed numerous fractures that pointed to a violent act. With this evidence, officers immediately took Brianna and Manuel into custody and brought them to the station where they would face further questions. >> So, I know it's been a while since we spoke last, right? A couple months at least. Um, but again, my name is Amanda Keller. This is Garrett Silva. So, the reason for our contact today, our investigation is coming to an end. Okay? So, I'm going to reread Miranda writes to you. That way, you're fully aware and you understand and we'll go from there. Okay. >> We went to the car and [music] we got her to finally calm down after that. And then from there, we went to the room and we placed her in the middle so she sure wouldn't wake up and get fussy again. And then I I ended up taking some pills and ended up going to sleep on them. >> Okay. Woke up. I freaked out. >> You said in the middle. Where is the middle? >> Or you said just the middle. >> In the middle of the bed. >> Okay. Um, what size bed did you guys have? >> Pink queen. >> Okay. Where was the bed positioned in the room >> towards It was against the wall. >> [music] >> Okay. And who slept against the wall? >> I did. >> Okay. And then where was [music] Briana? Um, >> so inside. >> Okay. Okay. What kind of medication did you take that night? >> I didn't take medication. I took pills of >> Or is it Do you smoke it? How do you ingest it? >> Snorted it. >> You snort it. Okay. Um, so what does that normally do to you? How does that affect your body? >> It knocks me out. >> It does what? I'm sorry. >> It knocks me out. knocks you out like just makes you tired. >> It's seriously just cold. [music] >> Okay. >> Manuel continued to insist that he had accidentally fallen asleep. But what he didn't know was that investigators had already uncovered evidence that contradicted his account. >> This is your name, [music] right? And right here was injured. You see that? It's more of a This is like an actual This is more of like a diagram. >> Yeah. Like here's your kneecap, right? And then it's right here on the corner. Is that a paper? Do you know why she would have had injury right there? >> No. Miss, the only the only thing that I know the only thing that worried me was her probably being broken cuz whenever we did do the CPR, >> that's what the only cause injuries that I would know like yanked her leg like that. >> Okay. >> You were saying her leg doesn't make sense. I mean like someone like hurt her or like a particular age >> something. Yes. So how would you explain y'all were the only two with her right all the time? So [music] how would that injury occur if y'all are the only two with her is what we're getting at? >> The only like I said the only bones that I know that were from would be from the CPR. >> Okay. So typically when you do CPR you're going to apply the same amount of pressure right in the middle. >> I was kind of freaked out when I was doing it. Okay, >> that's understandable, right? I mean, tensions are high. You're freaking out. You don't know what the hell's going on. Um, but she had a lot of >> So, that's why I'm asking you, Emanuel, to be honest and tell us what happened. >> What happened to you, >> man? I'm I'm going to be honest with you. We know we know what happened. Like, the facts don't lie on the autopsy report. Okay, we know that the injuries occur before death. All right, so that CPR doesn't play effect. Okay. >> Investigators began pressing Manuel about the autopsy findings. As they confronted him with the evidence, the pressure continued to build, leaving him with fewer ways to explain what had happened. >> We know what happened. I just want to see if you're going to be, oh man, tell us what happened. Okay. So, and it's weighing on you. I know it is. Okay. and you've been living with this for a long time. All right, we know what happened. I'm telling you right now, I'm not lying to you. I just want to see if you're going to be a man and stand up and do the right thing. >> So, let's start fresh and walk us through it. And I get emotions get high, right? She's crying. She's crying. She's crying. And it just gets a lot. I get that. Okay. [clears throat] And sometimes we lose our temper. Sometimes things happen. But honesty is what we're looking for. Okay? And I'm I'm telling you this right now. I [music] know what happened. We know what happened. I just want to see if you're going to be a man and do the right thing. So take your time cuz I know it's going to be a lot to explain. If you want to take a drink, take a drink and we're going to start fresh and we're not going to lie anymore. >> At this point, Manuel began revealing what had happened that night. his account would finally shed light on the events that had led to the tragic outcome. >> You're doing the right thing. You're starting off. You wanted this. >> Okay. So, just just tell me. I already know. >> She was being fussy and I got upset and had to buy a lady and she wouldn't stop crying. So, start. >> Okay. >> That was not long. >> How long did you say long? Maybe like her name. Maybe like a little bit of >> Until until what? She started. When did you know that [ __ ] >> Whenever I got her, she started crying. So I told she was like, "Oh, I checked her and she wasn't ready." >> Okay. And then [music] what? Just let me show you the ACP. Okay. Were you a panicking? Didn't know what happened. >> I didn't call 911. >> That was my That wasn't my fault. Brianna wanted to call me, but I told her to just freaked out and just scared nervous. >> What was Brianna doing [music] when everything was happening? I think she was in the kitchen and she came in. She told us all the babies and everything. You could be there. Did she see what happened? She didn't see it. There's no way for her stopping you or nothing like that. Was that the first time you had lost your temper? Was it just the constant crying just kind of got to you or just a split second just kind of lost it? >> Yes, sir. >> That was the only time you had lost your temper or anything like that. >> After a moment of anger, Manuel confessed to the crime. But when officers turned their attention to Brianna, what they uncovered made the case even more devastating. >> On this side, cuz I I roll over the other way. >> Okay. So, it's Manny and you baby is in the middle. >> Okay. So this evening you had taken >> and I'm very I didn't wake up until a certain time. >> Do you know what medic? >> And I kind of thought over it. So >> Okay. Do you use any other kind of >> medication? I don't use nothing really. It was just >> took the allergies comes with it and I didn't think that it would, [music] you know, make me sleep a lot more. >> Okay. Mhm. Okay. So, you're in the bed. What time do you go to bed? Do you think it was? >> Well, since a newborn sometimes they make you stay, but you know. >> Sure. [music] I don't remember. I think it was 11 or 12. >> What time do you remember waking up the next morning? >> I don't even know. I mean, I don't remember. >> Okay. So, you woke up, baby was cold, you started doing CPR. What about Manny? What is Manny doing? And I mean I I I hear myself but then he freaked out like like oh what's happening and that's what happened and I didn't I didn't call. So >> great. And then what did you decide to do? >> I just put a plastic bag and everything and decided to do that. >> Okay. So why before did you tell us y'all were in the car? What was the reasoning for that? Well, cuz at first, like the time we were in the car to try to calm her down. >> So before you guys went to bed, y'all were in the car. >> Yeah. >> So there was some truth to it. Just not okay. >> Just >> Yeah. After that, I was cuz I was trying to calm down and you know, like stay in the car with it on would help her fall asleep or whatever, you know, and nothing. And then we went back in. >> Okay. At this point, Brianna had begun leaving out certain details in an attempt to conceal the truth until detectives confronted her with evidence that directly implicated her. >> We're just trying to figure out why are these lab results telling us this? We know you know we're just trying to get the full picture of what happened. Okay. What happened to It's okay. >> Did he use often? >> It's a very addicting. >> It is. Is he still used? >> No. Well, that's good. >> No, he changed to make him not with not withdrawal. >> Yeah, >> I can. Okay. How long did he use for fentanyl? >> You don't know. Is it like some months? Is that [music] some years? >> Does it seem like he struggled with it? It's not your fault, Grant. That doesn't make him a bad person. That doesn't make you a bad person for being with him and wanting to support him and wanting to see things through. In the end, Brianna Stallings was charged with tampering with evidence. Manuel Gilenta was charged with misconduct resulting in death as well as tampering with evidence. In March 2026, the couple were awaiting trial and had been released on bond with no final sentencing reported as the case continued through the [music] state's courts. Up next, a man's confession revealed a crime that had been planned for financial gain. But the deeper investigators looked into the circumstances, the clearer [music] it became that the man was not acting alone. >> As long as everybody's okay. >> My brother's 10 years younger than I am, but I've known him for a lot of years. But this is so bizarre. Why? I'm I'm going to explain to you in just a moment. Okay. We are all here today because there is an active warrant for your arrest. >> For what? >> Okay. It is for conspiracy to commit [music] first-degree. >> What? >> On January 7th, 2026, officers from Florida received an unexpected confession from a man who walked into a police station. What the suspect revealed next would expose a plan far more disturbing than investigators had realized. >> I'm Deputy Chris Colulbertson with the Citrus County Sheriff's Office. I'm here at the operations building with Mr. Michael Grove. Uh Mr. Groo, can you please tell me why you're here? >> Um, I was asked to um Louise's brother, Stan. >> And what is Eloise's last name? >> Uh, Leland. >> Leland. And what's Stan's last name? >> I don't know. >> And where do they live? >> Uh, Canis Road over in Hernando with uh her friend John. >> Okay. And when did she ask you to um >> It started a couple of months ago. >> Has she ever approached you before to do anything like this? >> You didn't know? >> No. >> No. And then uh a few months ago and then I had the surgery. And then when I came out of the surgery, um she was always coming over like she was concerned about my welfare, >> but she just wanted to see if I was healthy enough to carry out this task. And um as I got stronger and stuff, but I'm still, you know what I mean? I'm like 100 pounds less than I was before surgery. I can hardly walk. And uh she told me, she said, "Find someone. If you can't do it, find somebody that will. I'll take care of it. Everybody that I ever worked with hated Stan, but uh I stood up to him, so it was kind of a mutual respect there. Everybody was scared of him and ran when he came there. But uh uh she said, "And if you find someone, man, make him big because Stan's in good shape. He rides bike like seven seven miles a day and and uh he's got some issues. >> As detectives continued gathering information, they began investigating what they believed may have prompted the alleged conspiracy. >> But uh she said uh he's got a ton of money. He's been living at John's house 6 years for free. Doesn't pay no bills and he gets a monster. Uh I don't know, some kind of check. His pension, social security. Yeah. I did something with rockets. in [snorts] uh I think Canada, but uh he's uh shows at the house sold and the deal was years ago when he helped her get the money that when she sold it, she split it. Well, well, she's she sold it and she doesn't want to split it. >> Okay. >> After the farm shut down and she [clears throat] called me up and she's like, "Are you busy?" I said, "No." She said, "Maybe by late." I walked up. She said, "Man, I need you to do me a favor." I said, "What's that?" She said, "My brother." I said, "What?" I said, "Sam?" She said, "Yeah, man." And uh she's like, "I don't want to. He didn't do nothing, you know." I said, "Yeah, but the the deal was you would." She said, "I know what the deal was, man. Well, now the deal's changing. For one, I can't be a part of it. And if I walk away and I read about Sans, that's not mean that because I didn't do nothing, >> right? >> And uh if you put my name up in that computer, you'll see I don't do this. I I I don't come to you guys. I I was a convicted [snorts] my whole life. >> Investigators had already uncovered signs that the crime was not as simple as it first appeared. But what the suspect revealed next would expose a motive investigators had yet to uncover. >> What does she You made an injection motion with Stan. What does she want you to do to Stan? Yes. >> She wants you to inject him with insulin. >> He's not a diabetic. >> He's not a diabetic. >> No. >> So, where where will the insulin come from? >> She asked me because I am a diabetic, but I don't take in. >> I don't know where she'll get it. >> Her daughter Her they do a lot of online. And uh she said that uh yeah, she said she'll go into probate, but because she's his sister and he's got no other that her and the other sister will will get his capital and uh she'll get hers when the sister gets it. She'll send it to her and she's going to Ireland, >> right? family. >> And I mean, >> she's not playing around >> and Stan ain't never done nothing to me. And he didn't do nothing to her, >> right? >> I mean, they're both miserable old people, but uh like I said, if I go home and you and you said, "You want to think about it? If I go home and she does something >> on January 16th, 2026, armed with the evidence they had gathered, officers arrived at the home of 81-year-old Eloise Leland Fox. What she didn't know was that investigators were already aware of details from her past that could change everything. >> Hey, sir. >> Howdy. >> How are you? >> How can I help? >> My name's Deputy Conley. >> Sorry I didn't get your name. >> So, my name's Deputy Conley. >> Conley? >> Yes, sir. Hey, >> Stan. >> Hi, Stan. Hey, we got a 911 hang up from this address. >> Okay. >> Who's up? >> Sir, thanks. >> Conly here. 911. >> Hello. >> Hello. Hey, we got a 91 hang up from here. >> See everybody everybody's okay. >> Hey, how are you? >> Fine. >> What's your name? >> Eloise. >> Eloise. Okay. And you? >> John. >> John. Okay. >> Just curious. >> I just want to verify. >> That's fine. >> Can you come with me so we can verify? You have a 352 area code, right? >> Yes. >> Okay. >> You got your cell on you? My car's out here if you don't if you don't mind. >> How long you been living here? Well, me just been staying here a few months. >> Oh, okay. >> I own the house. >> That one or that one? >> That one. >> Oh, okay. >> Louise, are you the only one home? >> No. No. My brother and my friend are in the house. >> Your brother and your friend are in the house? >> Yes. >> But this is so bizarre. Why? >> So, I'm I'm going to explain to you in just a moment. Okay. Um, with the the call that we got, did did somebody here call 911? >> No. >> No. Okay. It might just be a mixup. Um, but just with the call that we got, we just we're going to detain you for right now and then we'll >> said I was going to do something in just a minute. Well, that's we got to make contact with everybody else in the house. Make sure everybody's okay. And as long as everybody's okay. >> Of course, everybody's okay. This is >> Oh, Miss Leland, what's your date of birth? >> Okay. >> Where do you work at? >> I'm [laughter] I'm old enough to be retired, aren't I? >> Oh, well, I guess your date of birth. I can figure that out. But you don't look that old. >> Well, thank you. >> Yes, ma'am. >> That's how old I am. Yeah, I'm >> Well, you said you have tenants. You [music] do like property manage management stuff or >> No, >> just tenants here. You meant >> You said you own that, but you have the tenants. >> Well, they're they're buying it. >> Oh. >> Officers knew the crime had been planned for financial gain involving the inheritance and assets belonging to Eloise's brother. What she didn't realize was that her carefully planned scheme would not get very far. >> Is this a busy street? Y'all get a lot of traffic down here? >> No, not not normally. [laughter] >> Yeah. No, it seems peaceful back there. I really like the property. >> Yeah. So, somebody went in to get my brother and John or what? >> I would imagine. Is that your brother right there? >> That's standing up there. Yeah. Or is that John? >> No, my brother's >> Looks like my brother. My brother's got struggling hair and all. >> He was the one with the long beard. >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> All right, Miss Land. Um, I've got some news I got to break to you. Okay. Uh, we are all here today because there's an active warrant for your arrest. >> For what? >> Okay. Uh, it is for conspiracy to commit first degree. >> What? and uh we're gonna be going for a ride. Okay. I'd like to get you back to a facility where it's a little bit warmer so we can sit down and try and toss us out. If it's a misunderstanding, this is your one and only time to explain that. Okay. >> I have no idea what this >> I I understand that you're probably eager to find out what we know and and what we want to talk about. So, we're going to put you in one of these cars here with the right person. >> Yes, ma'am. >> So, we're going to go and get loaded up and uh head down to the office and sit there in the in the warmth and have a little conversation. Okay. We're going to leave those handcuffs in front of you. We're not, you know, normally they go behind you, but uh you don't seem like you're going to be mean and fight and try and run away. So, >> I don't think I'd get there. >> Well, soon as we get there, I'll pull those off over you and we'll we'll be able to have a conversation. Okay. Um, if y'all want to park over next to the CI bay and just walk in that that southernmost door there, you know what I'm talking about. Just right down to the interview rooms and then they'll get everything ready. >> In the end, Eloise Leland was charged with criminal conspiracy to commit first-degree [music] under Florida law. Next case, a routine trip to a rural area ended with a man's disappearance. Officers began searching for answers, but the discovery of his abandoned car would soon make the situation far more concerning. >> Yeah, we got our we got our window. >> Who drove the truck up in the mountains? >> Nobody drove it. I towed it up there. >> Oh, you towed it up there? >> Okay, [music] dude. Come on. Did you burn a body? Come on. >> On May 10th, 2025, officers from Idaho received a report about the disappearance of 47-year-old Patrick Shelton. He had gone to a rural area to cut firewood, but never returned. As officers began piecing together what had happened, someone close [music] to Patrick came forward with a detail that would lead investigators to someone connected to an area he frequently visited. >> I'm just surprised they haven't gone back to see like he said. That's why I'm concerned. >> Yeah. Um do you have do you know what he was wearing last when he left? >> Pair of boots, blue jeans, and I think it was a dark t-shirt and baseball cap. And he's got a little pug rider that is with him everywhere. >> And who is he to you? Is this your son? Your >> who is Patrick to you? >> One of my de your kids that I've taken under my wing. >> Okay. So, not biological. >> And I have his phone number, but he hasn't answered. So, >> okay. Yeah. If we collect that. And you said the last time you saw him was Tuesday night. Was that at your residence or where was that that you saw? >> He came to my house. >> Okay. >> And what was he driving on? >> His red Dodge flatbed >> 2001. >> Yeah, I guess. >> Okay. Is there any reason to think he's in danger? >> No. >> Beyond like he's just, you know, this is unusual. I I remember you mentioned something about when when you talked about him going to Ellen Bruce's, it seemed like you said something to where they had some conflict [music] recently. They have. >> Yeah. >> Okay. Um do you know why he went there? >> He was supposed to go move his motor homes and when he got out there, Allen had moved them with the a bulldozer. >> Okay. >> Not good. >> Okay. >> Probably screwed up the transmissions and I don't know. I try not to get in the middle of this. >> So, who told you that? Allan or? >> He told me that Wednesday night. >> Who did? Allan? >> I mean, >> Bruce [music] did. >> No, Patrick did. >> Officers traveled to the area where Patrick was known to spend time. The property belonged to Alan Bruce, who appeared calm and willing to help investigators in any way he could. But there was more to the situation than officers initially realized. >> Hey, Alan. How's it going? >> One thing after another. That seems to be the way it is. I'm kind of doing two jobs myself. Ranching and it's one thing after another for me, too. [laughter] >> Got a little ranch. >> What's that? >> You got a little ranch? >> I'm just renting a little place and whatnot. Yeah, but keeping water going. Always something breaking, you know. >> Cattle on it. >> Um, actually sheep. >> Sheep. Okay. >> Sheep. Yeah. I don't know if that was a good decision, but yeah, sheep. >> All right. >> Hey, um, I was just coming to chat with you. We had had a report that no one knows where Pat is right now. >> Yeah, they don't. Okay. And I just wanted to touch bases with you because I know he was getting he or sorry you got the stuff off your property but he was going to come by to pick it up, right? >> Yeah. >> Did you ever see him on that? >> I did. >> Okay. >> They came by here. He was unhappy. Very unhappy. >> Okay. But just it was just all kind of verbal argument or something or he's Okay. And he went and got his stuff then or >> Well, he still has some stuff here and uh he said he would wanted to go cut some wood. He need some money. >> Oh, okay. So, he's probably out somewhere out there. Maybe broke down and I don't know. >> Okay. Cuz we we based off of what people have told us, we uh we just put a missing person out right now just so we can try to locate him, you know. >> Did. >> Yeah. Okay. Yeah. Um so, can And I'm just trying to create a timeline for so I know who last saw him. So, when when was that he showed up here? >> I last saw him two nights ago. You came over here Thursday night. >> Okay. And then he obviously wasn't happy. But then he just did he hang around here long or did he just go right over >> back and forth? >> Back and forth coming back onto the property. >> Yeah. >> Does he still stab stuff here? Then >> he does it all out. >> Okay. >> That that shed, that wooden shed is his. >> Yeah. >> At this point, Allan continued cooperating with investigators and nothing in his account appeared to contradict the details they had gathered. But when officers searched the area where Patrick was known to go, they found something that raised an immediate concern. >> So, and then so you said you saw him Thursday night and then he went up to go get wood, >> right? >> Okay. Do you know where he goes to get wood or >> Well, actually, his truck had a problem. We worked out a trade on motor for a boat trailer he wanted really bad. And uh he left his truck here Friday all day and came and got it Friday evening and went wood. Oh, okay. You he worked a trade, so he took a boat trailer. >> I have a boat trailer he wanted. Oh, >> okay. >> He has an onand engine that I worked on a generator. I wanted that. We traded. >> Oh, I see. Did he tell you where he was going other than the wood? >> No. >> Okay. Do you know? Does he have any favorite spots? So, we can just go. >> He's got a spot up there at Bay Horse pretty close to the top. >> Mhm. Uh, you go up there before you get the the rest area, the P. You see where road takes off and goes down the hill and crosses the creek. >> Uhhuh. >> Way back up in there is a favorite wood cutting spot for him. >> Oh, okay. Okay. Is that the only one you know about? >> It's the only one you took me to. Oh, >> okay. All right. >> To me, it looks like one. All right. It's capture that the general. >> Yeah. >> It looks like one set of tracks. >> It does. >> It does. I can see the top of his truck. Oh, the roof track. Multiple tracks in here. >> Yeah, there is one over here. >> There's a set here corresponding and then corresponding. So, there's [music] >> grass is is is on this set. Grass is folded down coming out. Then we've got grass folded down going in. >> Officers spotted Patrick's car abandoned in the middle of the field. As they approached, something else immediately caught their attention, making the situation even more concerning. >> Bad. It's Cus County Sheriff's Office. Can you hear us? Is this chainsaw in the back? >> No. >> Dog's in the seat. >> What was What was the dog's name? >> Uh, Ryder. >> Ryder, buddy. Ryder. Well, I saw it moving. You see the dog? >> Hi, baby. >> Hi, puppy. Yeah. Hi, buddy. Hi. Okay. Okay. Are you running? >> Yeah. >> Okay. I was thinking on going further down. Not quite to the creek bottom. He may have fallen. >> Fallen. And >> I mean, because I was hollering for you and I never got a return from you. >> Oh, okay. I heard you call on the radio once. >> Yeah. I was I was hollering like you were doing for Pat. Yeah. >> And you couldn't you weren't? >> Yeah, I didn't hear that. >> So, that makes me think he could be down lower if he would cuz he his chainsaw is not here. >> Yeah. >> He always You want to go down for a walk? I'm thinking so. >> Okay, I'll go with you. >> While officers continued searching the area, the police department received a call from Allen's brother. His call would reveal a crucial detail that investigators could not afford to overlook. >> Been longer than that cuz it was I haven't talked to him since they both got stuck up off a big hill. My brother and Patrick were going for wood this winter and that was months ago. >> Oh, okay. >> Um Yeah, but I've texted them. >> Oh, you have? Okay. So, when when when's the last time you texted them then? Anytime recently or >> Yeah. Yeah. You know, I uh I texted him about a week ago and told him I drug his crap off my brother's lot. Um because my brother's been asking him to get the hell out of there for about two months. >> Oh, okay. are better. And yeah, he'd been stealing of my brothers and I just get tired of listening to the, you know, the whining and crying. So I told Patrick I his motor homes and [ __ ] off and uh he texted me back uh a couple days ago when he got into town um cuz I saw his truck down there when I was on my way to work and salmon. >> Yeah. >> Then of my brother's, >> right? And my brother was like gone, you know, Patrick waved a gun at me here a while back. And I've been, you know, kind of leery, been kind of hang like, you know, there was no mention of uh Patrick other than the guy. They've been kind of playing cat and mouse and he'd been, you know, like walking in from up by the animal shelter just to kind of, you know, see what the heck's going on, >> right? you know, and you know, duck and cover if he had to. >> Okay. So, he was kind of concerned Pat might Patrick might uh do something stupid, use a gun or something. >> Pap's going to kill him. You know, >> hours had passed and officers were still searching the area. Patrick's car showed no signs of an attempted theft, but his chainsaw was missing. Investigators began considering whether Patrick could still be somewhere nearby. Then, suddenly, an unfamiliar sound caught them completely off guard. >> 7080. >> Go. Did you hear that? >> Negative. >> Sounded almost like a chainsaw trying to start. >> What direction? >> Uh, from the front of the truck, just a little bit. If you're facing away from the truck, just a little bit to the right. I think anybody [snorts] who sees this body cam going up is going to get a laugh. And coming down. While officers were patrolling the area, something unexpected occurred, drawing even more attention to the case. >> Who are you? >> Stop right there. >> Just go ahead and stop right there. So, what are you coming out here for? >> That guy there, [music] Stephen P. Uh, Patrick Shelton, that's his stuff that I kind of looking after a little bit. >> Okay. All right. All right. So, you're just trying to keep an eye on stuff then? >> Yeah. Make sure nobody's ripping off down here. >> Okay. >> So, excuse me for if I got you excited. >> All right. 270 240. We can calm down. I'm cold for >> Sour Patch Kid. It's just things that he would have had in the back of his truck that would have blown out in that time frame. Also, right in that same area on the side of the road, I saw a letter. So I stopped because I I do the mail. So I it caught my eye and so we stopped and inside there was a piece of mail and it's Alan Bruce is took his address and everything on it. >> Where? >> Um up there where they're looking. >> So >> that's where Pat's truck is. So before you climb up the hill um on that it would be on the right hand side as you're climbing up the hill where the truck is at. You didn't tell anybody. >> I turned my around and hauled right back up there. I marked [clears throat] the spot right where I found it. I put my windshield um scraper. It's purple and a stack of rocks right where I found all this stuff. But that's just he for that to be there in the same area puts him I mean it's Allen's. It has his PO box number. It's it's for a bank card or something with a pin. The likelihood of it being up there in the same area. >> I I understand what you're saying, but the problem is choose my words carefully. I'm trying not to be mean. No, you're fine. But but this is now completely compromised. >> Do you understand? >> I understand that >> the thing to do would have been to call 911. >> I don't have cell phone >> and get a deputy up there and take pictures of the stuff right where and how it was laying. Now we have nothing. >> Okay. I didn't touch. Okay. >> With conflicting details and allegations surrounding Allan, officers believed there could be more to the story than he had revealed. After obtaining a search warrant for the private property, investigators began searching the area. What they were about to discover would change the direction of the case. Sheriff's office. Want to go around? Clear. >> Yeah. Yeah. All this is trash right here. This whole piece. >> Yeah. >> Or he's disturbed anyways for some reason. >> For some reason. It's kind He hasn't done any improvements to this place since I've been here. This is the first I've seen him actually trying to improve this. >> Well, this is the only spot that's looks fresh that I've seen. >> So, we're going to we're going to hold on this. We're just going to hold on on this trailer till we can get keys. If we if he won't give us keys, then we'll go from there. But we're going to we need to hold on this until we get that. >> Found a cell phone over here. >> You found a cell phone. Okay. >> Where was it at? >> He found a cell phone. Where's it at? >> Right underneath uh Allen's Wrangler denim coat right here. The Samsung >> [ __ ] >> You have that paper. It's got the eye on here. Yeah, I got it in my back pocket. I haven't looked to verify what model >> here. Uh Jared's got a copy of it as well. >> I'm rolling. >> Cleaned out. We >> Okay. So, it's not looking Yeah. >> Yep. We got our We got our window >> in a burn box. Ah. Dude, we'll have to we'll have to carefully lay that out and see if we can see a like a bullet hole or something. >> At this point, officers had found something that appeared to have been burned, drawing even more attention when they noticed that the vacuum cleaner seemed to have been recently cleaned. As officers questioned Allan about these details, his answers began to reveal a puzzling contradiction. >> Probably not freshly moved. >> Do we want to call out the cadaavver dog? Craig was asking if we want that out here. >> Let's go ahead and do it while we're here. We've got it cleared. It might be the best way to get something to hold him. >> We've got a cadaavver dog on other spots on the property that have bone fragments. And the only thing that dog is treated to on is humans, which tells me those bones are probably human. You know, there was only two people here that night. You and him, right? There's nobody else that I can talk to. can't find him. So, it just makes you, like I said, I'm just gonna ask you straight up man to man. If you didn't do it and somebody else did, can you point me in the right direction? >> I can't do that. I don't know anybody else is out here. >> No, that's like I said, I don't either. >> I know you did. I'm saying if you're willing to jump in a truck with us, you take us there. >> If you don't want to do that, that's under a risk. I'm going to jail >> until we can figure it out. Yes, you are. But we just we want to be able to tell across for you. You helped us every which way what you could. >> I can my case and revoke prison for the rest of my life. Water. >> I don't know. >> I can't tell you what you got to drink down. >> You don't have to go right now. >> Yeah. >> So the way it works here is he doesn't feel like we should let you stay free, right? So, we're still going to continue to investigate this case with your help or without your help. We're still going to dig through >> like and I don't know if you're asking about like how who drove the truck up in the mountains. >> Nobody drove it. I towed it up there. >> Oh, you towed it up there? Okay. With which vehicle? >> My dog. >> Okay. >> Who told to it up here? >> Oh, okay. >> Yeah. >> Have you guys talked about that? >> No. >> Okay. >> Yeah. I'm just like And how did you get the tires? How did you get it to stay? >> Just kind of parked on the side of the hill where it wouldn't roll back. And >> under pressure, Allan showed little emotion as he began revealing unexpected details about what had happened. His account provided investigators with information they were not prepared to hear. >> Allan, dude, come on. Did you burn a body? Come on. >> Yeah, I did. And you didn't tell anybody. So, like, look at it from from our point of view. You know what I mean? Yeah. Then we're just we got to try to find those guns, you know? We got to do the right thing for for Patrick's family. You know what I mean? We got to try to find that body, you know? We got to do the right thing for his family. >> There is no body. No. New is reduced down to nothing. Nothing. >> Did you chop him up? >> No. I came in Burn with a bunch of wood underneath him. Yeah. I chopped him up. >> I did. I chopped him up. >> Like did you I mean I mean cuz you can take a shoulder off with a a sharp knife pretty easy. Like >> I took a chainsaw to him. >> Okay. Where's the chainsaw? >> It's gone. >> It's gone. >> Did you throw it in the river? >> I got rid of it. Believe me, I burnt it. >> You burnt the chainsaw? >> Yeah. >> Is it in the barrel? >> Okay. >> Where's it at? >> It might be. It's Bolton. It's Bolton metal. >> Hey, that's my name. >> Well, you might find it in that burn barrel. >> Yeah, there was nothing left in you. No bones, no nothing. Maybe you punch some of cheese in key chain or wall chain or something like that. But these ashes nothing. >> Where's all the That's I don't understand. There's no how I've never seen somebody with a tangle out of that. >> Your back knee backs up those two trucks. And and I've never chainsawed a body, but I think there would be like bull and skin and gristle and stuff, you know? >> Yeah, it was ugly. >> And so like where where's that at? Where's like how did you clean that up? >> Took a shovel and rake. Rick left everything I could. Walked it down with a hose and put four on. >> In the end, Alan Bruce was arrested and charged with secondderee and destruction of evidence. He was sentenced to [music] 20 years in jail with no possibility of parole for the first 10 years. In the next case, a man passed away inside his home, leaving investigators with few clues and no clear suspect. For decades, the case remained unsolved until investigators uncovered something that would put them closer than ever to the truth. >> You have a warrant for your arrest out of Kenosha. >> I didn't know about anything like that. >> Well, you've been working on this for 22 years. I've been on this case in [music] 2012. A judge has signed it saying there's enough probable cause to state that you are involved in an intentional first homicide. >> I keep telling you I don't know anything. I really don't. In August 2025, officers in Illinois approached a woman identified as 70-year-old Roxanna Collins during what appeared to be a routine traffic stop. However, little did Roxanna know that the stop was actually about something more serious than her driving. >> You're fine. Uh, you have a license and proof of insurance on you? >> I do. Yes. >> Okay. Well, I'm deputy weather county sheriff's office. There's a couple reasons to stop you. I saw you when you turned out of your neighborhood and then turned left and then changed lanes and all that. >> I'm on my way to get my oil changed. My worried about leaving him now. Okay. >> And uh I'm sorry. >> No, but no worries. That's just why I stopped. You just didn't. >> Okay. So, there's my insurance. >> Okay. Thank you. >> And you want my license? >> Yes, please. >> Here you go. >> So, you mind just going like this with your hands for me real quick? >> What that? >> Put your hands like this for me real quick. >> Okay. >> Okay. >> What's going on, sir? >> I'll explain that in a second. Okay. >> Okay. So, you have a warrant for your arrest out of Kenosha. I didn't know about anything like that. >> Okay. Well, that's just why you're in handcuffs right now. Do you have anybody that can come pick up the car? >> When was the hard issue? >> Is that why you guys pulled me over then? Or >> you mean you didn't use your turn signal in front of me? >> All right. I have a lawyer, too. Do I need to get my lawyer or what's the scoop? >> That's up to you. You're not I'm not asking you any questions right now. You're just being you're just being detained right now based off of the warrant that you have out of Kenosha. >> At the start, Roxanna was collaborative, but the moment officers informed her of the real reason for the stop, the calm interaction turned tense. Meanwhile, across town, officers were already making their way to a residence where the second person tied to the case was about to be taken into custody as well. >> Hey, John. >> Hello, sir. >> For a second, >> put your hands behind your back for me. >> John, >> put your palms together. How you doing, man? Lieutenant Paulson with the C County Sheriff's [music] Office. You're under arrest. We got a We got a warrant for your arrest. Okay. You got any questions right now? >> No. [music] >> You know what it's for? >> Well, you guys called me. >> Yeah. So, what? Let me just >> Did you push my glasses up? >> Yeah. You get All right. >> So, you got to work for for [music] You know what? You got to work for >> Yeah. So, this is what I'd like to do, okay? And just just hear me out, okay? >> Um, if you're going to cooperate or, you know, we can handcuff you in front once we get over there, okay? >> I'm not I understand. >> I'm too over. >> I understand. >> You know, [music] >> hear me out, okay? We're going to take you downtown. Me and Jason, it's my partner. You talk to him on the phone. >> Honey, >> this is Mike over here. Okay. >> We We'd like to try to talk to you. I I [clears throat] really would like to just see what you got to say, but I want I [music] want to go over some things first, but let's go downtown and we'll go from there. >> Listen, [ __ ] she kind of she she kind of told us what was going on. She she she sped up to what you know, I don't even have that. So, I can't even go to him right now and say, "Listen, this is what I have right now. You need to talk." She don't want to talk. That's all I have. I I can't do anything else with that. >> I keep telling you I don't know anything. I really don't. And I vote my law. >> Okay. What's your attorney's name? >> T A Fine. >> Yes. >> Do you have >> Officers made contact with 70-year-old John Viscusil, Roxanna's ex-boyfriend, who was taken into custody without any resistance. But back to Roxanna. Now, inside the interrogation room, she was about to come face to face with the real reason she had been stopped. >> Hey, how are you? I'm okay. Thank you. >> Thank I never met Jason. This is my partner Jakeki. >> Hi Jason. >> Nice to meet you. >> So you guys taking me Kosha or what's going on? >> Well before I do anything I I am right. It will be more than happy to talk to you answer questions. >> Well I do have a lawyer too. >> Understand it. You have you have a warrant for your arrest. Since for first-degree intentional homicide party have a crime follow of David. Okay. >> Mhm. So we've been working on this for 22 years. I've been on this case since 2012. And I know I mean I'm sure you remember we just talked to you what four or five weeks ago. So we've done a lot of work in this case. I mean, it's been a it's been a it's been a it's been a marathon. But this is not just a a warrant just to question you. A judge has signed it saying there's enough pros to state that you're involved in an intentional first degree intentional homicide. You're your husband. event. So, I mean, it's I I'm going to be honest with you, I want you to understand I'm not I'm not asking you questions. I'm just going to tell you. I'm just I'm talking to you. It's time. This is going on for 22 years. The evidence is clear that you were involved in this or that very, very minimum being it happened. Okay? There is no other theory to this case. There's no other theory to what happened. We have gone over this case over and over. We examined all the evidence. We've examined all your statements. I want to talk to me. Okay. I'm just saying I'm just like, okay, I want you to hear me before we're not talking. Okay. I want you to really think about this cuz I apparently you didn't listen to me when I talked to you 4 weeks ago. I can try to sympathize with you and your situation with your husband right now, especially you're 7 years old. It's on. >> Inside the interrogation room, investigators informed Roxanna that they were reopening the 22-year-old investigation into what happened to her late husband, David Vandery. Rather than responding, Roxanna offered almost nothing in return. >> I understand your husband has a that's a that's a nasty disease. That's a nasty and it's you can only imagine how hard it is to try and take care of. Okay. Well, if he told you that day, you can either be treated as a witness or you can be treated as a suspect. Okay? Why don't you know it? This is a very unique situation. It's not like you're a 30-year-old woman that's in custody for homicide. You're 70 years old. You're talking about a case that was 22 years ago. You have mitigating factors in the fact that you have a husband at home with a s significant disease that needs to be taken care of. But here's the problem. I have nothing to go on right now [music] other than what the evidence shows us because I got nothing for you. You understand what I'm saying? >> Yes. I keep telling you I don't know anything. I really don't. And I want my law. >> Okay. Let me ask you a question. It's nothing in this case. Did that you had you or did you call him after we came and talked to you? >> I called him because everybody's always getting accused of stuff they didn't do. So, I wanted to know should I be worried about anything or what, you know? >> As investigators pressed Roxanna to open up about what had happened with David, she held her ground. But investigators weren't done making sure Roxanna understood exactly what was at stake. You are going to be held here because because obviously you're at Illinois. You can't just be taken into custody across state lines. >> Okay. >> So, you're going to have to go through an extraation hearing down here without extraation or fight it or whatever. That's for a judge to decide. Once that process is through, they will be when they then deputies will come down here and transport you to their jail uh to our jail. I'm sorry. where you'll face a judge. >> I wanted to I'm told by your name. That's it. >> I understand. I got your right. I just just know this case isn't going away obviously. Yeah. You're there's an actual rush war on the side. So, it's not going away. Well, we're more if you if you decide you want to talk tomorrow or the next day or whatever, we're we're more than happy to drive all the way back down here to talk to you. >> Okay. Well, first I'm going to talk to see what he advises. I >> Okay. >> I mean, people go to jail all the time and I'm sorry. I'm scared. So, I'm like I've got a lot in my life I've got to worry about right now and [music] >> I understand. >> So, that's all I'm saying. is one month to my entire >> Yeah. But I want you to understand that this is this was not taken lightly in the fact that a judge signed off on a probable cause warrant for first degree children on the other side should tell you something. This is not a fishing expedition. I mean [music] we this case is as solid as could be. >> Okay. >> Looks like you do possibly have a bond. I'm going to confirm that. Do you know how much or >> it's I I think it's like $75,000. >> And what do you got to come up with? Like >> that's cash. >> No, I mean you don't pay the Oh, 70. You don't pay the whole 75,000. Usually it's a percent, right? >> Not because it's Wisconsin. It's the full thing. >> It's a what? >> It's So Illinois has like a 10% bond or whatever. That's Yeah. Not Illinois. Wisconsin. It's a full It's full amount. That's crazy. >> Yeah. What? You think you come up with a You got 75,000? >> No. >> Okay. >> 75. I'm just I'm just saying. >> No. >> Okay. >> In a separate interrogation, John Viscusil was confronted with evidence placing him at David's house on the night of the murder. At the time of the crime, Jon and Roxanne had not yet been together publicly, and Jon had been David's closest friend. Despite the evidence in front of him, Jon denied every accusation. Following both interviews, Roxan and Jon were each charged with first-degree intentional homicide. Roxanne was held on a $750,000 bond, while Jon was held on $500,000. A few days later, Roxanne was brought in front of a judge for the first time, and according to her attorney, the woman standing before the court was not who investigators believed her to be. >> Miss Collins is currently 70 years old. Uh she is a recently retired individual from about a year ago. She worked as a medical assistant in various uh medical settings for over 20 years. Your honor, she currently lives with her husband Brian in Mckenry, Illinois, and they have been married for 16 years since 2008. Your honor, Miss Collins, she has three adult children and has many grandchildren that live close to her that she spends lots of time with. But your honor, I would like to highlight that Miss Collins is the full-time primary caregiver for her husband, Brian. Brian has advancing Parkinson's disease and has potentially early onset dementia. In fact, Miss Collins receives um payments from the VA uh as a primary caregiver for Brian. Uh actually in 2022, um Brian had a bad fall down the stairs and the state has since put an electric chair in their home to help with his movement. Your honor, Mr. uh Brian's health depends on Miss Collins being able to help him out. Uh, your honor, I'd also like to note that Miss Collins has her own medical conditions that need to be addressed. She actively takes medication for high pressure and type 2 diabetes. She is receiving some of those medications, but not in the regularity that is required to maintain her health. Your honor, further, um, Miss Collins does have a, uh, from the '9s, uh, but she cannot recall. There's no criminal record of note. She's not on probation, parole, extended supervision, or bail for any other matter. Your honor, I also would like to address the strength of the state's case. As I'm sure the court has reviewed the criminal complaint, these charges stem from 21 years ago. Within that 21 years, Miss Collins has been a citizen that is actively involved in her family's lives, has no criminal history, owns a home with her partner. Um there was there's no reason or concern for a flight rule seat. >> In the end, Roxanna was released after posting a $500,000 bond while Jon remained in the Kenosha County Jail. In August 2025, a Kenosha court commissioner looked at new witness statements about broken alibis, a firearm connected, and the rest of the [music] evidence. Now, the case is waiting for trial. Up next, a woman passed away inside her home, leaving investigators with very few clues about what had happened. But a device found on her wrist would soon provide a lead, pointing investigators towards someone they had never suspected. >> We don't know. That's what we're trying to figure out. >> I don't know. >> We're trying to figure out what happened to Karen. But whatever you did led to her death, >> not me, my friend. >> On September 13th, officers from the Santa Clara County Sheriff's District received a call from a concerned woman after her coworker had failed to show up to work for several days when officers arrived at the missing woman's residence. What was waiting for them on the other side of that door was about to set a deeply troubling investigation into motion. >> Has she moved at all? >> Thank you very much. >> Is she moving at all? I just went inside and I just >> sh police. Hello San Jose police. She's probably going to be 1055. >> Inside the residence, officers found the missing woman, later identified as 67-year-old Karen Navaro, deceased. But as officers were still processing the scene, someone unexpected was already making his way toward them. >> We're going to leave everything the way it is right now. Okay. >> A good idea. >> Yeah. >> What did >> we know? That's what we're trying to figure out. So, >> yeah. Yeah. >> Family member. Yeah. >> I'll live right here on 34th of November. >> Okay. >> In case you have any questions or whatever. >> Okay. Yeah. Um, did someone already talk to you and get your information? >> Where name? >> From the corner. >> Yeah. >> From the corner talk to you. >> Talk to you already. Okay. >> Yeah. She just left. >> Okay. >> I told my check. >> Okay. Yeah. We're going to we're going to leave everything the way it is for now and then maybe um you know you can come back maybe later on tonight or something. Um cuz the detectives might need just just to make sure. >> Absolutely. They been around. >> Yeah. Yeah. >> See they mailed them uh we don't got to come away for any reason anyway. So >> yeah. Okay. And then you guys haven't come inside the house at all, right? >> No. >> No. Okay. >> Huh? When's the last time you saw her? >> Friday. I brought her pizza and cookies. [laughter] >> What time was that? >> I think it was around 3:00. Like I told that lady over there. >> Yeah. Okay. >> How was your >> The man was identified as 91year-old Anthony Ayelloo, Karen's stepfather. Speaking with officers at the scene, Anthony showed little sign of distress over the situation with his stepdaughter. Meanwhile, the co-orker who had made the call was also present at the scene. And what she told officers about the state of the house when she arrived would quietly shift the direction of the investigation. >> She was my coworker for past 27 years. >> Oh, sorry. And then she was supposed to work yesterday. She didn't like she always called. She didn't show up. And then today my coworker called me and see Amber, do you know where she lives? Can you go check on her? I said, "Yeah, I Oh, I said I will go now." >> So, you came over here today just to kind of check up on her. Yeah. >> Yes. I first tried to call her from my home >> today. >> Today? Yes. Okay. >> So, just maybe >> What time did you try call? >> So, when you came here, >> so you tried calling at about 5. You got here about 9. Sorry. About 5. You got here about 5:15. >> About closed. Yeah. >> Yeah. And then did you see anything unusual about the front door, about the house? Anything? >> No, I did not see unusual. Actually, I was so worried that I instead of coming here, I went to that house and I was quite parked there. And then I said, "Hey, wait a minute. That's not the house. This is the house." So, I came here and I asked the neighbor before I entered the house if he could help me bit, but he seemed [music] like in a rush. So, he said, "Sorry, ma'am. I cannot." And then we drove. >> Okay. Yeah. >> Was the front door open? >> No, not at that time. It was >> Was it locked? >> It wasn't locked. It was unlocked. >> It was unlocked. Okay. Nothing. >> It wasn't open. >> Unlocked. >> So I >> But closed. >> But closed. Yes. And so I >> tight I mean I got worried cuz I was banging on the door and I was saying it car. And then I thought, you know, yes, the door was unlocked. So I went in. >> As the investigation developed over the following days, officers worked through the accounts, evidence, and details gathered from the scene. And the picture that began to emerge kept pointing back to the same person. >> Hi. >> Mike, come over here. >> What's going on? >> Let me see your keys. >> All right, turn around. Turn around. Turn around. >> Wait, wait, wait, wait. What happened? >> You're being detained right now. Okay. >> What? >> For everybody else, uh, >> go for no weapons or anything on you, sir? No, I got a radio and my my wallet. Okay. What's cooking it? Um, the case officer here is going to explain to you what's going on. Okay. >> Okay. >> We'll have him I'll talk to you here in a second. This is a I don't know. [laughter] >> So, one of the things that I wanted to let you know about was some video camera footage that was found. Um, fortunately for us, Karen Street has a lot of uh video cameras out in front of houses. >> [clears throat] >> There's one in on the street that shows your car parked in the driveway. Now, the first time that it shows is right about 3:13 on the 8th. Would that be consistent with you the time that you believe that you got there? Saturday the 8th. You know, I don't know what watches. [laughter] >> Okay. >> Okay. >> That's what it shows. It it show it shows a dark gray car parked in the driveway and it's the same shape model as your wife's cuz you drove that car over there, right? >> All the time. >> So, I was looking at it and it shows 3:13 in the afternoon on Saturday >> that I got there that you [music] were there. Okay. It also shows that car leaving at 3:33. Okay. So, you're there for about 20 minutes. same car that same day that you said that you were over there. So, that was at 3:33. Now, I'm no I'm no math wizard, but that tells me you were there for about 20 minutes, which is fine. >> Like I I can't even with [snorts] >> Okay, but you would agree with me when I say nobody was with you. >> You left. She walked out to the door with you and closed the door and you walk and you left. That's consistent with what the video shows. That's all fine. >> At his residence, Anthony was taken into custody and transported to the station for questioning. At first, Anthony played along as though none of it meant anything to him. But what the suspect didn't know yet was that among that evidence was something far more specific than he had apparently anticipated. >> Do you know if Karen wore a watch? >> I don't. I will tell you this. When we found Karen, Karen was wearing what's called a Fitbit. Do you know what a Do you know what a Fitbit is? >> Okay. >> A Fitbit. You've probably heard about it. It's like a watch. It has the same functions as a watch. It tells you the date and time, but with technology and the way it's working today, a lot of people want to try to stay fit and stay active, right? >> Oh, sure. >> Okay. Well, the Fitbit is designed to monitor your step count. You ever heard about like step counters, a pedometer, something that that counts your steps >> as you walk? I heard about it, but >> Okay. Well, her Fitbit has a step counter built into it. >> Oh, nice. >> And it also has a heart rate monitor built into it. >> That's better yet. >> Not bad. So, they've got pretty good technology built into them. Well, when the coroner did Karen's autopsy, they noticed that she was wearing one. >> That's good. >> When they pulled it off of her, we could see that the battery was still working, >> which is good because that means the data is still there. When we got to a point in the investigation where we were trying to figure out what happened to Karen based on what you had told us, we took that Fitbit and we actually had it analyzed. We had it analyzed for any movement that occurred. I will tell you this that the movement stopped on the 8th of September, that same day that you went over to visit her. >> Mhm. >> Okay. I'll also tell you that the heart rate monitor indicated when she passed. Oh, >> the heart rate monitor indicated she passed at 3:28. >> And I was there at 3:28. >> You were there at 3:28. So Tony, this is this is kind of my concern. Um, you were there at 3:13, you left at 3:33, but her heart rate went to zero at 3:28 in the afternoon. We need to know what happened. [snorts] What can I tell you? I have no way to tell you anything. If I was there that long, I don't remember. That's it. I have an unanswered. >> You don't have an answer? >> No. Why would I have an answer? >> When investigators laid out exactly what the Fitbit data revealed about the timeline of events inside Karen's home, Anony's carefully constructed account began to unravel. But the investigators were just getting started. >> Here's another issue that I have, Tony, and I want to kind of put this out there for you. You said that she started eating pizza. >> Mhm. >> Pieces of that pizza were on the floor underneath her. She was actually eating it at the time. which tells me that she probably didn't come back to the door with you because of way the heart rate showed. So, what it showed, it showed normal for a period of time, then all of a sudden it jumped up and then dropped down to zero, which tells me that there was a brief moment where she was probably struggling and then it dropped off to zero. >> No, she answered the door. I know that >> she probably answered the door. I totally agree with you. that she came in, closed the door when I left. >> The problem is, Tony, that's not what the timeline shows. The data isn't lying. The Fitbit or the little heart rate [music] monitor showed that she was deceased at 3:28. You left at 3:33. That's chronologically >> makes me guilty. >> I'm not here to determine guilt or innocence. I'm here to figure out what happened. >> I'm the guy that I'm guilty. >> Do you see the problem with that? So, what happened to Karen? >> I have no idea, >> Tony. I have an answer. >> I want you to understand something. Maybe there's [music] there's always reasons for things that occur. I get it. Okay. >> A lot of other deaths. >> You might have loved her to death, but whatever you did led to her death. >> Not me, my friend. Never in the world would think anything like that. Never. Tony, [clears throat] she was when he left the house. We can prove that. >> Not when I was. >> Not when I was, my friend. >> I know that technology is somewhat hard to grasp for a person who's 90 years old. Okay? And I get it cuz technology and me, we're not friends. But I do understand the data that's given to me by people that are smarter than me. All right? I I have to rely on people that understand all this magical stuff that goes on. I watched the video. I saw your car at 3:13. I saw your car not there at 3:33. And we made sure that those times are absolutely accurate because I had my concerns. I wanted to make absolutely sure I was doing the right thing, that I was going and talking to the right people, specifically you. Because once we found out that she had passed by 3:28, I knew we had a problem and that's why you're here with me. She was for 5 minutes before you even left the house. At a minimum, actually a minimum of 5 minutes because at 3:35 your car is not there. So maximum of 7 minutes, minimum of five. >> Even as investigators laid out both the Fitbit data and the surveillance footage, Anthony continued to deny any involvement. But what he didn't know yet was that investigators had also been speaking to people close to him. I have a couple of I have a couple of different theories here, >> okay? >> As to why. >> Never, never, never. >> Okay. Well, hear me out here. >> I have a couple of different working theories. One is you needed it for money. >> One is what? >> You were involved in this for money. I don't think that's the case. [music] >> I think you guys are doing >> I think you guys are doing okay. >> We are. My main concern is the second possibility. You know, you're kind of a spry guy. You're in good shape. Still go to the gym. Um, your wife is elderly. >> Yeah, she's >> she's in a walker. >> I need to >> I don't know. You know, maybe you're just over there looking for comfort. I don't know. Cuz after talking to your wife, cuz >> the guys talked to your wife. >> The other investigators did. to talk to your wife and she remarked that you rarely go over there. >> She what >> remarked that you rarely go over there but for some reason today you brought her or that day you were on her pizza. By the time you would have gotten home, parked your car in front of your house, she was already deceased. She was already dead. She had been killed and could have been somebody in the house. But Tony, you were there. You were physically there in the house at the time. >> I mean, hiding under the room or something after I left or whatever. >> Okay, Tom, you're you're missing the main concern that I have. You are inside the house when she is when her heartbreak goes to zero. You are inside the house. How can you explain that? I I have no explanation. Tony, do you think that's going to fly? I I I [clears throat] have no answer whatsoever in that situation. >> Despite everything being laid out in front of him, Anthony held his ground. But investigators were about to put something else on the table that would be even harder for him to explain away. >> Is there any reason for Karen's to be in your car? >> Blood. >> Blood. >> Blood. I don't know. Because there was a lot of left around when the person caved in her head and I believe that person was you >> in the car. >> I believe that you are responsible for her. You're like >> I found a shirt real similar to the one that you're wearing now except it's doesn't have as many stripes in it. It's got all over the front of it. It's this one here. >> Yeah, that's your shirt in your house. Here. Here, here's the other problem. Um, in that same hamper, there's another white t-shirt. Looks like the same t-shirt that you're wearing there. >> Yeah, you're wearing right now. >> Vshape. >> See those spots on the front? They already tested it. [music] They already tested it. >> Yeah, they already tested it and they said they came back as How did that get there? I have no idea. >> Tony, that's your shirt. It's the same t-shirt that I can see peeking out over the top here. >> I have no idea. [music] That's what >> that is. It's shirts. >> What is it? >> That's what we're going to find out. So, here's why I'm asking you very important question. >> A lot of times I get caught and trapped and all that. >> Yeah, Tony, I get that cuz I get the same point. But, but here's the problem, Tony. These are little teeny tiny spots all over the shirt. This shirt apparently has the same spots on the front. Now, given what we know and given the splatter that we saw, I don't think you've seen these yet cuz this just came in hot off the press. Those spot patterns are probably the same spot patterns that we see at the scene. Now, here's what's going to happen, and I want to make sure that you understand this. These spots on these shirt they tested present deposit by the way. Um they're going to be compared at the Santa CL County Lab. There was blood taken from your stepdaughter. >> Mhm. >> They're going to compare the on that t-shirt with your [clears throat] stepdaughters. And here's what's going to happen. And I want you to understand this cuz these people are really freaking smart. Okay? They have more degrees than I have fingers and toes. >> [sighs] >> They're probably going to come back and say this looks like Karen. I would venture and guess based on what I know. But here's your story, and I want you to understand this. I don't know what happened. She walked me to the door, but yet there's a t-shirt in your clothes hamper, your dirty clothes basket [snorts] that's got her on it. How are you going to explain that? Don't shake your head. You got to tell me. >> I can't tell you. >> Investigators then revealed that blood had been found both inside Anony's vehicle and on his clothing. Even then, Anthony refused to acknowledge any of it. But investigators weren't finished yet. And the questions they were about to ask would push Anthony into a different territory. >> Tony, are you trying to protect someone? I mean, >> no, I'm not trying to protect anybody. I'm saying the [clears throat] truth. >> Is Adele involved? Dell, >> is she involved in this? >> No. >> Was she with you in this? No, >> of course not. I went alone. >> She could only like I said then you need to help us here. You I mean everything you're getting now is pointing towards you. >> I appreciate [laughter] that. >> Every I know and and you're not stupid. You're actually pretty smart and you get it. How how you you can't even explain this. [snorts] You can't explain it. You're going to bring no closure to this at all. Did you guys have a fight and you just got mad at her and that was it? >> Never. Never. Not a woman. Never. >> Tony, how do you explain this understanding either? >> How do you How do you explain this? >> I have no idea. No way. Cannot do that. Oh my gosh. Poor baby. I can't do that. No. Never. I don't know what happened. I don't know what happened. >> In the end, Anthony Ayella was charged with first-degree murder and pleaded not guilty. A criminal grand jury formally indicted him in August 2019, and the trial was set to move forward, but his health had been deteriorating steadily throughout custody. Later that month, Anthony was transferred from the Santa Clara County Jail to a hospital due to complications from pre-existing conditions. On September [music] 10th, 2019, Anthony Ayello was pronounced deceased.
