biggest concern right now. I've got a baby crying inside. No one's coming to the door. I don't hear any adults or anything like that. Hello. >> [laughter] >> Hey. [screaming] I was trying to hold her and she wouldn't have any of Nobody's even looking for her. That's the problem. Yeah, no one's called us. Some parents make the unthinkable decision to leave their children completely alone, left behind in conditions no child should ever face. But what happens when officers arrive and discover these kids with no one in sight? No way she did that. Wow. They were crying. They had one of them the boy climbed out the window. Come here, baby. Are you serious, 30 minutes, man? Yeah, hey, come here. >> Why would you wait 30 minutes to call us? But after 30 minutes and a over 100°, how do you think that's going to affect her? These were the moments when cops discovered kids abandoned by their own parents. We begin with the case of a mother who left two babies completely alone inside a house in deplorable conditions. And when officers arrived at her doorstep, what they found demanded [music] immediate action. Sheriff's office. MAKE YOURSELF KNOWN. Please don't take my kids. I've already had to deal with this. Please, please, I'll get somebody to come and get them. On February 3rd, 2024, officers responded to a residence after receiving a report that a child had been left inside completely alone. When the officer arrived there, he stood at the house's door for several minutes calling out and waiting. But the only response he got was the sound of a child crying. At some point, every second of hesitation started to feel like a cost. Sheriff's office. Sheriff's office. They're definitely in there. I hear the baby crying. I haven't heard a person yet, so they got about one more minute, I'm coming in. Sheriff's office. Be advised, I'm getting negative contact at the door, but I do hear a juvenile crying. 10-4, if I can't make contact with uh an adult at some point, I'm going to make entrance. Sheriff's office, we need to make sure you're okay. we don't speak to somebody, we're coming in. I don't hear anything bad other than the baby crying. So, at this point, I doubt the baby's home alone, but that's what I'm That's my premise I'm going off cuz I can't I Yeah. This wasn't the first time. The neighbors had seen enough to finally report it. That detail alone told the officer everything he needed to know about what he was walking into. However, what the officer found inside that house was far worse [music] than expected. >> hear a baby. I thought I did at one point, but Why don't you come to the door? And I heard the baby crying before I even knocked. I mean, at this point, I need to talk to the adult. But legally, if I think the kid's unattended, we can go in there. My biggest concern from the get-go, which is what I told the original, was just the ongoing domestic. I did see the the old or whatever, but I kind of believe her story that the kid just fell. But also, was that because they were fighting? So, I mean, it's And this is a big common occurrence. Because it might not be the first time we've been out here, but supposedly having problems with them out there three or four times. And the neighbor who's right there who I put my statement in my report, she says that it goes on a lot. All right. So, I've got dispatch out here for a domestic I responded to last week. There is some type of paraphernalia right there outside. I'm going to let you look at that in a minute, but the biggest concern right now, I've got a baby crying inside. No one's coming to the door. I don't hear any adults or anything like that. Sheriff's office. Sheriff's office. SHERIFF'S OFFICE. MAKE YOURSELF KNOWN. Is he alive? What's up? You good? The children had been through enough that even being carried out by a stranger didn't shake them. But the moment their mother arrived, she already knew what was coming. And no explanation she had was going to change what those officers had just found. Where's the girl? Okay. Well, I got a car seat for baby. We can go ahead and we just going to have to go ahead and and let them sit there right now. The baby asleep? That I didn't even see that. She was asleep, yeah. Oh my god. I mean, we had to check on her and make sure she Yeah. I'm going to put my stuff in there. Oh my god. What the hell? So, we came out here to do a follow-up. I tried to make contact and we found >> My phone's off. I don't have no phone. I was going over there to see if I knew somebody to contact her sister cuz I don't even have no phone. Okay. Hang tight. I'm going to get the rest of the story cuz right now we got to make a step back right here. Are y'all taking my kids? We don't know yet right now. I just I had I had just walked over there. I'm so sorry. I had just walked over there cuz I was trying to get a ride and stuff cuz I don't have no phone. How old is your baby right here? She's 1. 1 year old? >> Please don't take my kids. I already have to deal with this. Please. Please. I'll get somebody to come and get them. Who do you have? My uh their their grandma. What's the grandmother's name? Uh Sarah. Sarah Rose. Are y'all really going to take my kids? I'll call Oh my When the cops went to talk with the mom, she came in with answers ready. But the officers weren't interested in excuses. What they wanted to know was why there were substances inside that house within reach of two babies who couldn't even speak yet. >> What's your name? Britney Coleman. Britney. All right, Britney. I'm going to be I'm already done dealt dealt with D-facts. They they already know I'm out here with my kids and stuff like that. My case was closed. It was closed a couple months, but not with these two. With my other children. I had just moved out here not so long ago. I had literally just walked over there. Me and their father. Let me ask you this. And I'm not going to get you to incriminate yourself. This is for the well-being of the children. First off, a lot of people get scared when they hear D-facts because they think D-facts is the one who can take children. They can't. It has to be law enforcement, doctor, or judge order, okay? With that being said, while we were doing a check of the residence to be here with the juveniles, but no adult, and plain view there's residual >> [music] >> Well, that's not mine. I don't Well, I'm just saying, but it's still in plain view in the open for the plain view doctrine. So, that being said, just just think if one of these children could walk, you know what I mean? And they touch that and it has fentanyl on them, for that 15-20 minutes you say you went over there, they'd be That's where we're at. What was your previous D Facks case for? They was with my with their father, and my son had walked out while being with his father. Different father or same father? Different father. Different father. What about her? This one. She can sleep. What about her foot? This one was passed out on the couch with two bottles. This one was in a jumper seat in the middle of the living room with the TV the television up all the way. She She was across the street or whatever. She's saying 15-20 minutes. I've been here for 25 minutes. You guys think leaving those babies unattended like that Especially with this one holding a bottle on the couch. That's aspiration right there all day. Yeah, I was following up for the nothing of it. I got you. Hello, how we doing? We just want to see if you can give us a value of the children that were left unattended home for Well, we'll say an hour, but I don't know if that's She was asleep. This one's one. Yes. And that one? She was asleep sitting upright with two bottles in her lap. Outside or inside? >> No outside exposure then? No, not until we we brought them out. Okay. Hi, sweetheart. How are you? Whatever Britney was trying to project in that moment, the house had already told a different story, and the officers had seen enough to know that just sending the kids to a relative wasn't an option for her. Come here, thirsty auntie. I'm helping with the child child staying in the care. Absolutely. Okay, your nana's going to get you. She will. She know people in Burke County. Now, go ahead and make it work, all right? Go ahead and turn over whatever property you're going to turn over to her cuz she can do it. Don't forget something to eat. What about their bottles? She's going to get that score away. Okay. Go and place your hands behind your back. I'm not going to jail. I'll explain everything in a minute, okay? Please don't take me to jail. I'm not going to jail, am I? I'll explain everything in a minute, okay? Oh god. All right, just stop right here for me, okay? It's just 10 lb. Let's all this right here. >> Change and a few dollars and the um the number two the owner here. Okay. Am I going to jail? Yes, ma'am. Oh, can I tell somebody that I want to kill? I'm going to jail for stealing that, please. I'm going to jail for Brandon's stuff. Hey, you got a bag for this stuff? I did. Okay. All right, I'm going to read you something, okay? You have the right to remain silent. Do you understand each of these rights as I explained them to you? Having these rights in mind, do you wish to talk to me now? What am I going to jail for? Uh you're going to jail right tonight or today for we'll go over it in a second. So, am I just going going in and going out or I don't know how the jail handles the process but with each charge right now I'll book you in and the jail will let you know when you can make bail if you can make bail and all that kind of stuff. >> Well, I need phone numbers and stuff. Can I Can I at least tell Christina that I have Brandon come over here? Okay. Who is Christina? Is she the lady that's looking at it right now? No, she lives in that camper over there. >> Okay, the one you went to the other day? Yeah. Okay. I can have someone go over there and just let them know to get in touch with uh Brandon, okay? All right, I'm going to buckle you up, okay? Go ahead and lean back for me. All right, just take deep breaths, okay? Nothing you do right now is going to change your situation so you just got to relax, okay? >> be able to get my phone number. Okay. So, right now it's just best to stay calm. Come on, Brittany. Hey, Brittany. You want to go? Look, watch this. Look. Oh, you like that? She said she was having a panic attack but I got her to calm down, I think. So, just keep an eye on her. Are y'all able to get my dog put on a chain cuz some people will call the pound. Yeah. We'll do our best. All right, go ahead and have a seat for me. Come on, Cassie. Come on, Cassie. That's a good dog. That's a good dog. All right, man. We got your dog up, okay? And they're we're in they're in the process of looking for Brandon, okay? In the end, Brittany was charged with endangerment. Moving to the next case, the police found a kid by herself on a highway. When they found her mom, [music] something in the way she reacted didn't look good for the cops. You want these? You want glasses? No glasses? Okay. I mean, it's not unacceptable to the point where you take my daughter from me, but you My DAUGHTER IS WELL TAKEN CARE OF. SHE'S OUT OF HER [ __ ] mind. If you don't get her off this [ __ ] town, I'm going to get her jailed. Turn around. On June 27th, 2023, officers responded to a call reporting a child found alone near a highway. The little girl had been out there long enough for strangers to stop, pull over, and wait with her. Hello. Hi. Oh, wow. We don't know where the child is. Where did you find her? She She was right on the side about to walk into 49. She was right here? >> Yes. So, when I was checking my mail, I saw her coming up this way. So, she belongs somewhere down there. I just don't know where. So, I got my car. Okay. And we pulled up at the same time. And she was about to step into 49 from the ditch. And she I don't know. Okay. Gremlin, she don't like to be touched. Yeah. She's uh Okay. So, they found this kid in this ditch right here about to walk out on the 49. I live five houses down that way. Hey. >> [screaming] >> I was trying to hold her, and she wouldn't have any of Hey. >> [crying] >> You want these? You want glasses? No glasses? Okay. The two women had been there long enough to notice how long the little girl had been alone, and they claimed she was acting restless. When the mother finally showed up, her attitude was immediately confrontational, and officers took notice. Nobody's even looking for her. That's the problem. Yeah, no one's called us. OKAY. HI. >> [screaming] [crying] >> I HAD TO GET HIM AWAY FROM HER CUZ SHE'S patient and Yeah, you're going to go look for them. I'm going to go ahead and call D-Fax. They rode by, and then they stopped and pulled over, and then they come back. >> They did. I believe my partner right here found her address, but we're going to have some words with parents here. Thank you, guys. I know Thank y'all for being patient with us. And that was That kid is very blessed that you guys came by when you did cuz this ain't exactly a very forgiving road right here for toddler. Ma'am? Thank y'all. Ma'am? I AIN'T GOT NO [ __ ] WHAT ARE YOU CRUSHING ME FOR? TWO VERSIONS of the same story were being displayed, but they couldn't both be true. The stepfathers account had effectively closed the exit Marion was trying to use and it seemed like she was beginning to realize that. >> Is this granddad? No, mother's name and little girl. Little girl's first name is Seven. Like the the number. From what the bottom was saying she's in the middle of detox. She was the one that was responsible watching the kid. They were both in her room. Um, everyone else is doing their own thing. Yeah. And when I when I it was explaining to her she got pissed because someone else's fault. Yeah. So, you're being charged with the obstruction, like we talked about, walking away. And then we're also going with negligence, cruelty to children. >> Because of the child walking towards Highway 49, almost getting struck by a car. Hey, let me Let me get it RIGHT THERE, BROTHER. But In the end, Marion was charged with obstructing law enforcement officers and cruelty. Next up, officers responded to a report of two children left alone in an apartment, and what they found inside made it clear this was far more than a case of a parent stepping out. No way she did that. Wow, okay. I used to live right there, and my neighbor, she We could hear her beat her kids through the wall, so we just had to call a couple times. Yeah, diapers were dirty. They were [music] crying. They had One of them The boy climbed out the window. On May 27th, 2024, officers received a report from a neighbor claiming that two children had been left home alone. When officers arrived to investigate it, what they found inside the apartment was deeply concerning. Okay. Neighbor next door said she just found out that she just realized like she heard the baby cry. knows the car was in here. This stuff here is It's three sizes too small for you, my little hair, it is. What have we done so far? Well, we just cleared the house and got her out. Okay. >> And him, he got out cuz we opened the window and he climbed out before us. Okay. >> Mom wasn't coming to the door, so couldn't really so we could clear the house. [clears throat] She was upstairs laying by the door just crying. Yeah. So, no telling how long that's been going on. Okay. That's as kind of as far as we've gotten. We've just gotten some clothes. >> Okay. Push. Push. Push. Push. Do you Do you have mom's info? It is Do you have >> Jasmine Frazier. Okay. Um This is the neighbor next door. There's no way she did that. Wow. Okay. The neighbor who had made the report arrived at the scene, [music] bringing more information about Jasmine. Meanwhile, the police officers who were searching the apartment were shocked by its condition. That's her name. I haven't found her phone number. You have not? Okay. >> Yeah, no, I don't have it cuz I used to, But but um her phone's been shut off and then her boyfriend took her phone. W A L >> Yeah, I used to live right there and my neighbor, she we could hear her beat her kids through the wall, so we've had to call a couple times. Yeah. When's the last time you saw her here? Last night, but doesn't mean she wasn't here today. >> Sure. What she drives? She drives a small um white uh Dodge. I don't It's not a Dodge uh Charger or anything. It's common. It's a small car. No power. Fridge. 476797 [ __ ] What's wrong with Wow, brand new fridge. Nothing in it. What's this drawing? Covered. The good part of the story was that none of the children seemed to be hurt or sick, but now it was time to confront the mother and the officers were prepared for whatever excuse she had. Okay. Are you going to take both of them? I can. Are you going to take Yep. Where are they? Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I think it's okay. Are you Jasmine? Okay. Do you have your ID with you? Where do you work? So, you went to work at 5:00. What was your plan? I was just like I didn't mean to like do that, but like I didn't have anybody else to watch them, so I've never done this before. And so, the food was it was all rotten and stuff, so I just like threw it out. And I was going to get more, so it wasn't like my intention to just do it all the way through. Mhm. Well, we we went and got food for them. They're [music] chowing it down. Their diapers were dirty. They were crying. They One of them uh the boy climbed out the window. So, um you know, that's unacceptable. That's child At this point, officers had seen enough. The evidence was clear, and the consequences of Jasmine's decisions were about to catch up with her. So, stand up. You're going to jail. Face away from me. Put your hands behind your back like you're praying. Put your hands >> [laughter] >> You're lucky they're not You're lucky that they didn't get kidnapped or something like that. Or burn the house down. No power, there's no food. Okay. All right, you're going to go with this officer right here. They're on you. >> [crying] >> Um, just so you know, that your your kids are going to be okay. DHS is coming. They're going to be They're going to be taken care of. >> [laughter] >> Can I hold you please, ma'am? Uh, I don't think that's going to be all right now. No. As officers continued questioning Jasmine, it became increasingly clear that her only concern was herself, not the children she had left behind. >> Hey Jasmine, I got to read you your rights, okay? You got the right Uh, it's okay. You got the right to remain silent. If you make a statement, you can exercise these rights and not answer any questions or make any statements. You understand those rights? Okay, having those rights in mind, what I just read to you, do you want to tell me what happened today? Um, so Yes or no? Oh, yes. Okay. Okay. All right, so you went to work at 5:00. Yes, sir. Okay, at Torchy's. Okay. And then, so what was the plan? I mean, the kiddos, we saw the little laundry basket blocking their way out. Were they asleep? >> accidentally put that there. I didn't It wasn't just me. Okay. Okay. I'm so like I made sure that they were okay. I made sure that they were fed and everything. Uh-huh. All the food that was in there was just rotten and stuff, so I ended up throwing it out. Okay. What did you feed them? Um, I fed them What was it? Oatmeal and stuff. Okay. What time? What time? >> was the morning time and I gave them some more oatmeal and just kind of like Cheerios and snacks for a little bit, but I wasn't going to be there that long. At work? Yes. Okay. So, what time did they last eat? If you had to guess. I would say maybe around like 3:00. About 3:00? But yeah, before I like kind of like hid it out, like I made sure that they were okay. Okay. What time did you leave? 5:00. 5:00? You left at 5:00? Okay. So, were they asleep when you left? >> Yes, they were. Okay. Where were they sleeping? >> In their bed. Have you ever left them alone before? This is like literally I just didn't have any help, so like I was just trying to go to work. It wasn't like I was trying to do it. I got you. Who do you normally call? I used to call my sister, but she was at work. Your sister? Okay. Anybody else ever watch them? Just my sister. Okay. So, were you planning to work till 10:00 though? When were you going to try and leave? As early as possible, but like I'm sorry. Okay. Okay. Uh do you have any questions for me? Okay. >> Um I do have a question. Okay. Okay. Um as far as what it looks like and Mhm. Like I've never had anything like that. >> Right. But So, is two is two counts of cuz you got two little kiddos there. Yeah. That uh you know, they had no way if something God forbid Yeah. something caught on fire, one of them drowned in the tub, anything like that, you could be looking at a lot worse. Um so, it's two counts of child Um >> [snorts] >> and you're going out of Oklahoma County. You okay? You'll see a judge, and a judge will set your bond. Okay. Okay. And um I guess your son's dad is coming from Lawton, and we're trying to find somebody for your daughter. Is that right? >> Is there a way I can call him? I don't know. DHS was making some phone calls. I'm not sure. Okay. But that's kind of where we're at. So, somebody will transport you here in a little bit. Is there any phone numbers that you need or something? Oh, yeah. Okay. Okay. All right. Any any questions? Is that it? I don't know like how many years is that? Uh I don't I don't know. It's up to a judge, all that stuff. The most The most that's going to happen probably is you you won't have custody of your kids for a while till they can figure out this is not a common thing. >> In the end, Jasmine was arrested and charged with abuse and neglect and DHS came to take custody of the children. Next up, a 2-year-old girl was found locked inside a sweltering car in a parking lot. But when officers confronted the mother, her response only made the situation worse. My child's been in the car for about 30 [music] minutes. Uh the vehicle's not running in the heat. She was trying to get her to unlock the door and she left her phone and the key and then she didn't want to run back in to get it. Are you serious? You got her? I'm so so serious right now. But after 30 minutes in a over 100°, how do you think that's going to affect her? >> [music] >> Do you understand what I'm saying? On July 19th, 2025 in Florida, the police received a report that a child was trapped inside a car in a cinema parking lot. When officers arrived, the situation demanded immediate action. The child had been inside the vehicle with the windows up and every minute counted. >> You got a punch? I got She's been in there for like 30 minutes already. You got one? You got one? Go ahead. I know, baby. Go to the other side. Other side. Other side. Is that fire? 3375 17 if you can get out there. Advise fire EMS. The child's been in the car for about 30 minutes. Uh the vehicle's not running in the heat. 30 minutes was a long time to decide to ask for help and the officer standing there knew it. The mother's explanation didn't match the urgency that the situation demanded and that gap was hard to ignore. Come here, baby. Are you serious? 30 minutes, ma'am? Yeah. Hey, come here. Why would you wait 30 minutes to call us? You're okay. What? I was trying to get her to open up I know. Come here, baby. I didn't have my phone on me. Yeah, you guys can go ahead and deal with it. Ma'am, you can hang tight for a second. Talk to this officer right here. He's going to get some information from you. The degree of a noise, she waited 30 minutes >> to call. It's like, what? She's trying to get her done what? 30 minutes. 30 minutes? 30 minutes in the car. No AC, no AC, no nothing. >> Why? Cuz she said she she was trying to get her to unlock the door and she left her phone and the key in there and she didn't want to run back in to get it. Are you serious? So so serious right now. Is she hot to the touch? She's trying to get the cell phone out of the car. So EMS is saying So, she's she's she's good. Can we do it by ourselves and pop the window? No. Uh don't worry about it. But you need to run Yeah, we'll go with documenting it in the report. Yeah. And just get us We got her statement already. The officers had pressed just enough to find out the mother's real intention and the moment she stopped trying to hide it, the answer became clear. Can I go around this way to see her? I don't know if it's open. You good? You want to stay in the stairway? It's not open. They're trying to keep this There's AC in there. They're trying to keep the air inside cuz she's hot. I just wanted to make sure cuz I know I didn't call instantly cuz I was trying to get her to open the door. I didn't have my phone on me. My phone was stuck inside the theater What do you mean stuck? Like >> Like it was inside. I didn't have nobody was out here to help me like call or anybody and she was fine like she was okay in the beginning. >> theater is open. Why would you not walk up to the window right there and tell them to call 911 for you? Cuz I was trying to get her to open the door cuz in the beginning she was fine. She was laughing. She was playing. I was like Of course, but after 30 minutes and a over 100 degrees, how do you think that's going to affect her? Do you understand what I'm saying? Yes, I do. >> what I'm getting at? I I understand what you're saying. I understand what you're getting at. But, I'm trying to tell you it's Never mind. What's your first name? My first name is Tephora. T I E O R A. Last name? Merrick Jackson. The officers had handled enough calls to know the difference between a genuine accident and something else entirely. And in that situation, not one of them was willing to give Tephora the benefit of the doubt. >> So, she's up here at the theater for whatever reason, I'm assuming to watch a movie. She I sit herself in the car. So, instead of And her phone is already inside the theater somehow, but the baby never made it into the theater. So, baby locks herself inside the car. So, instead of calling 911 to meet her or going to summon help from the window, she tries to get the baby to unlock the door. So, baby's not unlocking the door. So, she's doesn't want to leave the baby to go inside to get her phone to call 911. Doesn't want to walk up to the window to get the concierge to let her call 911. So, instead waits 30 minutes with this child in this not running hot car. What was she doing for 30 minutes? Standing at the window, trying to talk the baby into unlocking the door. So, her phone is up there. Her phone's in the theater. She has it now, I think. Is that I think No, that might be her wallet. But, yeah. 30 minutes. Talked to the EMS, the baby was obviously in distress. The baby was screaming, crying. Baby's hot to the touch. Baby one or two? Two? Two. Got to be two. She was going to get the baby to unlock the door. I don't know. Bro, I can't get my 4-year-old to unlock I can't get my 4-year-old to unlock a damn door. Have you already got it? Yeah, we had to punch the window. Yeah, she's hot. Yeah, she she was Yeah, she She's in the back there working on her in the truck. I bet it. Yeah, she she was pretty hot. She's She was the one that Ma'am, can you You did? Yeah. What happened? Yeah. What did you do? Well, I was I probably did that. 20 minutes? That's ridiculous. Yeah, straight up. In this car and she's so nonchalant acting like it's nothing like Her story isn't making sense to me. She didn't even realize that A mother who had just learned her daughter was pulled from a sweltering car should have reacted differently. But, what the officers were watching wasn't despair. It was someone far more concerned about what was happening to herself. Who is is this This is your son or who is he to you? >> brother. This is your brother? Is there another adult here with the car? No. Okay. No. Please, no. Not right now. Not right now. I'm about to go ahead and have him hook her up cuz she's getting more excited and I don't want to need any shoes. She's the one that I think needs to go to jail. What do you think? Yep, we'll do that. We want to go ahead and advise her that she is going to be 10-13 and Yep. All right, so I go Yeah, just go ahead and put your hands behind you. All right, ma'am. Let's go ahead and turn around for Yep, go ahead and turn around for me. Go ahead and place your hands behind your back. All right. Take her to the ticket junction, right? Yeah. You're going to be going to jail today for child endangerment. Okay, that's fine. When officers spoke with the theater staff, their account didn't support Deporres' version of events. And with each new statement, her story continued to fall apart. She was inside with the baby and brought the baby out to the car. Halfway through the movie is that I'm like, "What was this? >> I'm But when he started telling me I was like, hold on, cuz this is some pertinent information. >> going to need to talk to him? Hold on. Well, he's getting the number for the child's father. Okay. We need parents for them other two as well. Cuz they only 12 and 12 and 13 or 12 and 14. So, what So, she brought the baby in and I did not witness any of it, but I asked them if they saw anything and so they did say they saw some stuff, so. I was assuming they were watching movie they got up to a lobby kind of deal. The kid was kind of like walking around the lobby and stuff, so I noticed that she brought a kid outside. She came back in. She bought She came outside again, but I wasn't aware if she like came back in or not again. So, when she came out she had the baby with her? Mhm. And you Did she come back in with the baby or was the baby First time, no. She came back in again not with the baby. I don't know if she told you. Okay, did she ever say anything to y'all? Never mentioned like She didn't She didn't notice us at all like that. She didn't >> Okay. Did she look like she was in a panic or anything like that? Didn't look like she was in any type of distress? Were the other children the other kids those two older ones were they with y'all when that happened? >> No. Or with her when that happened, I'm sorry. They were not Were they still in the movie or I do not Just don't recall seeing them? >> boy in the green shorts walk out like twice and but didn't see the other child. >> And none of them said >> None of them said anything to us. They kind of just walked in and out a couple times. Like I saw them standing next to the car and I'm thinking it looked from where I was looked like the window was down and they were chit-chatting with whoever was in the vehicle. So, like I'm thinking nothing of it cuz that happens all the time, so. What was the time frame there? Um that would have been about 30 minutes ago that I saw the boy walking in and out. Um What was the last time you seen the child before she walked out with the child? I going to guess 20, 30 minutes. So, probably what she said about 30 minutes time lapse the baby was and the baby was already halfway to touch, so. Did she come in and say anything to you or Okay. Nothing at all? No, uh she was Okay. And then walked back into the theater or down the hallway at least. And then she stopped and then she walked back out. There was crying in the theater, so she brought the kid outside then. Okay. She got in the truck and then from what she states is that she was outside and the door closed. Does this make sense at all to you? I don't know cuz she walked out with the baby and then she walked back in and I didn't see or hear the baby. >> Now, excuse me. Did she go back into the theater? I don't know where she went after that. I mean, I know she went down the hallway. >> Okay, so she completely passed all the way through, all the way down the hall? Yeah. Okay. Did she seem like she was in a hurry or No? Not really. She just kind of walked back there. She I'm like she looked kind of like her face looked like she was kind of just done. Yeah. >> And exhausted. It's I don't know. Okay. Okay, and she never said anything to you or did she ever at any point come up and try to get you guys to call us or No? Okay. So, did you see them walk back and did you see her again after that or did the kids that were with her? I didn't know that they were with her, but I did see a couple that looked like they were teenagers maybe like kind of run out. Okay. I don't know if they were with her or not. About how long between when she went back there and when they all came running out? Maybe like 5 to 10 minutes. Okay. I don't know. I'm bad with time. But yeah, and then they kind of were in and out here a few times. Okay. She walked in up here with She [music] was started over there. Okay. Walked out here. Baby was like messing around with the toys and stuff. Okay. Yeah. Mhm. >> [clears throat] >> I noticed she went back to when she went outside with the babies. She came back in and out like I think once or twice. Okay. No baby with her the first time. I didn't know where the baby was. I didn't know if she went to go watch a movie again. And that's kind of all I picked up. She seemed incredibly neutral, so I didn't really think anything was up or anything. Kind of And if you had to estimate about the same like the time frame Again, about 30, 40 minutes ago kind of deal. Okay. In the end, Deporres went to jail and was charged with neglect. While some parents leave their children behind out of desperation, others [music] simply disappear. That was exactly what officers found in this next case. The lady that lives underneath there [music] came to my apartment and said that they had heard a baby up there screaming. I don't know where the mom is. Where is mommy? It's not her fault. Not her fault for what? The fact that the house looks trashed? [music] On April 29th, 2023, officers were called after someone heard a child crying inside a residence. According to the caller, the toddler had been left alone while the couple was at a store with their other children. Upon arriving at the scene, the officer located the apartment, but there was no sign of an adult nearby. Has anyone tried checking on this apartment? >> They were supposed to come out. Uh-huh. But the lady that lives underneath there came to my apartment and said [music] that they had heard a baby up there screaming. Yeah, I can hear the baby near the door. I don't know where the mom is. I have the keys to this unit. Is there really a baby screaming in there? No, she just comes up to the door when knock on this one. Sir, hello. You want me to call my maintenance to let you in here? I think I have the keys. You have the keys? Yeah. Now, let's go ahead and make entry. Do you want to make entry? Yeah, let's go ahead. You want to wait for the other officer? Sure, let's go. Mama! Hello. Where is Mommy? Stay here. Don't go downstairs. Hold on. >> [crying] >> Hold on. Come here, Mommy. Stay here. Knock out, please. Sit here, Mommy. Sit down. Hello. Sit here. Don't move. Stay. Knock out, please. Knock out, please. If you're in here, make yourself known. Did you check behind the bed? Do you have contact information for the person who's supposed to be living here? Yeah, and that's in my office. Let's go get it. Inside the house, the officers found the toddler, but the case deepened even more when they saw that the apartment was filthy. Shortly after the responsible parties arrived at the scene, along with their excuses. Excuse me. How's it going? Who are you to her? I'm the baby daddy. >> [music] >> The baby daddy? Do you live here, too? No, sir. You don't live here? No, sir. What were you and her doing? We was at the Dollar Store real quick. Okay. Do you ever visit that apartment at all? No. All right. She lives like that? She don't. But over the course Mhm. All I want to say I actually lived in there. She had a lot of mental issues. Mhm. And um when I did used to stay in there Mhm. it was a lot going on at the time. Okay. And basically, it's it's not her fault. Not her fault for what? The way she The The fact that the house looks trashed? Mhm. Okay. Is I've been trying to come over here and help her in this situation. >> me ask you this. How many kids do you guys have between you two? Between us? Okay. Are the kids in the back seats also yours? One of them. Okay. And the other one is? Yes, sir. Do all these kids live with her? Yes, sir. Is there a reason why y'all went to the Dollar Store and left one of them in the in that apartment? She was sleeping. We was just going to run in real quick and go in and out. Where was she sleeping? She was sleeping in um the the bathroom. On like the mom's bed? Yes. Okay. We got called out here cuz the neighbors heard the baby screaming, and we had to get the manager to open the door for us for us to find the kid alone in a house that looks like that. That's pretty dangerous for that kid. >> Where's the baby at? My baby? Yeah. What baby? The one that's downstairs. All right. Just making sure. Ma'am, real quick, do you guys have family in this area? No, you? What about Uh I think it's mom and I think it's her brother. Like how close? What do you mean how close? Like where does she live at? Um probably not that far. I think they're all right. This um this I think it's their home, but I think she has something to do. Okay. The woman seen here was identified as 29-year-old Jamie Warren, the mother of the toddler. Although her boyfriend, identified as Danner Garrison Smith, had tried to explain that she was suffering from mental issues, nothing could justify leaving the child alone, and the officers made their decision. [music] Mr. Danner? All right, due to circumstances going around with all the situation, we're going to place you under arrest, all right? What what what job? Well, what is the situation? For child Hands behind your back. Hands behind your back. >> We'll explain everything. We'll explain No, no, come No. Hands behind your back, all right? Come on. Are you serious right now? Yep, we're serious. What what did I have to do with this? Can I call my job? Can I call my job? Yeah, go ahead. He said I wasn't I was at work, man. I was at work, man. No. No. Call my job, man. Tell them I was at work before y'all do this. Call my job, man. No, no, call my job, bro, before y'all do this. Y'all doing it wrong. Y'all doing it wrong, bro. Come on, call my job. We'll call your job. >> No, no, no, no, I refuse. I refuse, no. You can't refuse. No, cuz why are you placing me under arrest? I was at work. They're still your children. But I was AT WORK. I'M CLOCKED IN RIGHT NOW. CALL MY JOB BEFORE YOU DO THIS. WE'LL PICK HER UP AND TAKE HER to the store? No, I met them at the store, bro. Okay. You know, you can't arrest me. I wasn't even here. I wasn't even here, bro. I WAS AT CALL MY JOB RIGHT NOW. CALL MY JOB. NO. WE will confirm it with your job. We need you to sit at the car first. I'm not sitting at no car, man. Call my job, bro. Call my job. Where do you work at? I'm calling her right now. I will call them. I will call them. You can call them, but then I'm going to call them cuz I don't know who you're calling. In my phone. Give me my phone. What's her number? Give me my phone. I got the job phone right here. That's the job phone, which is this phone, but my manager's numbers in my phone. Unlock my phone. Let me unlock my phone and I can call her. We'll do this. No, no, sir. Sir, just can you listen to me? What's her name? What's her name? Santa Monica? Yes, sir. Okay. That's all I need. We'll we'll ask for your manager through that. Yes, this is the phone right here. I know, but it confirms it. It confirms it for us to make sure we're getting the right person. All you have to do is let me unlock my phone. All right. Cuz y'all can't arrest then I'll take the kids home. We we have people take care of the kids in case this is the way it ends up being the case. How can y'all arrest me? I even told you I wasn't here. Tanner was clearly stressed and anxious about the situation. As the investigation continued and he didn't stop his behavior, Demi appeared once again trying to free her boyfriend from the situation. That is not a safe condition for children. There's pesticide everywhere. [music] There's little hazards everywhere on the ground. You got to see that. >> [crying] >> No, I told your officers that. The officer over here is telling me something different. I told them both I don't [screaming] stay here. He don't stay here. He have his own place. He stay by his self. These aren't his. My two youngest two right there [clears throat] my oldest one is not his. The older one is mine. Her daddy is on the other side. He was at work. If you put like I I I understand what you're telling me. I've got to go off of what my officers told me. But your officer >> What your off My officer is saying you said you came and picked her up and gave her a No, how I would HAVE LICENSE, SIR? IF your officers would have did their job correctly, I wouldn't be here. Well, everything that you would have told him would have been on body cam. >> I told him. So, he's got to >> the cameras. I told him I don't stay here and I didn't pick her up. Check the cameras, bro. >> Stop. Stop. He won't stop. THIS IS MY PHONE. I PULLED UP AND THAT OTHER GENTLEMAN WAS UP THERE. I PULLED OUT WHEN I WAS UPSTAIRS. I got out the driver's seat. He was not in the driver's seat. I was driving. >> Okay. He was in the back. Well, let me talk to him. You got the job phone in your hand and y'all still got me in handcuffs. PROTECTING SOMEBODY. THEY DIDN'T EVEN WANT TO LET ME TAKE THE KIDS HOME even they do take me out of handcuffs. No, that'll be different. You would be You'd be allowed to if you cuz you're the biological father. I just asked them Well, then why then how come what I said that y'all said I picked her up? Did you see me pick her up? No, if we can confirm that you were at work and you were not a part of THIS PROBLEM >> THE JOB PHONE IN MY HAND. YOU JUST CALLED ME ON THE JOB PHONE. Give us a second. Stop. Stop. Just call where it says send my manager. Just call. Press Press call. That's all you got to do. Press call. >> Should be answering now. It's that phone. Well, I said you can still just press pause. >> saying just with with him present so that the state don't bring him today. All right. >> [screaming] >> In the end, Damion was charged with neglect and possession of a controlled substance. Nothing could fully prepare officers for what waited behind a basement door in the next case because what they found on the other side was far worse than anyone expected. [music] >> Had some kiddos locked in a basement. That door appeared to be locked, so she busted it down and there were five or six kids in there. >> So, you HSD workers are telling me that the these kids are in imminent danger? I will give you the information we know, yeah. A call about five children locked in a basement quickly unraveled into a series of disturbing discoveries and a meltdown from a mother who realized a friend had helped bring officers to her doorstep. We were called here. Someone was concerned about the welfare of the children. Are you their mother? Yes. Are all these children yours? Yeah, they're all mine. You don't have a life, and that's the truth. People don't like to hear the truth. You you don't have a life for doing that type of stuff. Playing with somebody's kids like that, that's That's not cool. On July 31st, 2023, deputies from the Racine Police Department were dispatched to a home on Metron Court to assist the Human Services Department with checking the welfare of five children allegedly living in unbearable conditions in a basement. The landlord had visited the day before and discovered that the children, ages 1 to 8 years old, had been left entirely on their own. Upon arrival, officers met with the HSD team to learn more about the severity of the report that had brought them there. Oh my god. Hello. Happy Monday. You guys brought the whole crew out for this one. Yeah, we got a lot of kiddos. Before we get in the home and it gets a little chaotic, can I just have your first and last name? Sure. Justin Schmidt. S C H M I D T 7500 Is that your badge number? Yeah. You're good. I don't need it. Officer Eric Stefan. D E R R I C K Well, I don't know what you guys are made aware of, but we got some kiddos locked in a basement. Um Don't know where their mom >> like they're a landlord came yesterday to get pictures because she was going to be changing the carbon monoxide detectors. Um it appears appeared to be some 19 to 20-year-old females living in there who are not on the lease. Um she was about to enter the basement, the landlord, and the 19 or 20-year-old said, "Oh, there's a family living down there." The landlord said, "What? Like, what do you mean?" Um and one of the females said, "Well, my aunt just died." So, the landlord left it alone, and she left. Today she came back with her son with the carbon monoxide detectors to change and she needed to get into the room in a basement. The door appeared to be locked so she busted it down and there were five or six kids in there. Um an infant for sure. None of the kids talked. Um none of the female said anything um and she left. And called us. The female or the landlord? The landlord. Oh. Yeah, so she >> understanding is she called us. My understanding is the 19 and 20 year old are still in the home but But we don't we I don't think that they're their kids. I don't know. We don't know whose kids these are if they're how long they've been locked in there or anything. So I think the thing we need to establish though is like if they don't answer the door for us, are we breaching the door? Is this where kids are in you you get that? I think from what this landlord said like this was that was a locked door. So if there's little kids in a locked And there's an infant in the area. I don't we can't we can't say that she's getting the appropriate formula or the appropriate diaper changes. Okay. So you HSD workers are telling me that these kids are in imminent danger. From what information we know, yeah. Okay. Yeah. Okay. Okay. The landlord described the children living in unsafe conditions and some appeared malnourished. According to the HSD team, there was no doubt they needed to act immediately even if that meant breaching the door. When they knocked, it took an unusually long time before anyone responded from inside. Police. Police, we're here to check the welfare of the children. Hi, sorry to bother you. Uh Police department. Yeah, how may I Do you Do you live here? Yes. You do live here? Yes. >> Do you have an ID? No, I don't. The woman who eventually answered was identified as 21 year old Nigeria, a relative, but not a guardian of the children HSD had been called to check on. Her uncooperative behavior made it clear that something inside that house was being hidden, something no adult inside wanted authorities to see. I'm confused. What's the fuss about? So, we're checking on the welfare of a few children. A few children? >> Yeah. There's supposedly children in the basement, and we're going to check the welfare of those children. Okay. Okay? Well, let me get their mother because we don't even communicate with We need to know who you are first. What's your name, ma'am? >> My name's Nigeria. Why? We explained why we're Okay, then you have nothing to worry about. Let's get your information. Okay. Okay. Sure. Can we come in? Excuse me, we're in the middle of moving out. >> all right. So, we live here. Hi. So, you want to come in here with us? Hi. Sorry to bother you. We We were called here. Someone was concerned about the welfare of the children. Concerned about the welfare of the children. Are you their mother? Yes. Are all these children yours? Yeah, they're all mine. Okay. Do you have an ID on you, ma'am? Uh no, I do not. Do you Do you own an ID? It's just not here or what? >> Yeah, it's just not here right now. Oh, where would it be? It's actually in the vehicle right now. It's not here. So, you live here in the basement? Yes, right now yes. Right now I'm just staying here for a few days. Oh oh, sorry. Didn't mean to shine the light on the little one there. Um So, someone was was concerned about them? Yes. They were saying that the Do you know who that would be though? Like who would be I don't know. Do you have anything with your name on it? I just I just need to identify you. When somebody contacts the police department about something, we're actually not allowed to say who it was. The mother was identified as 34-year-old Dashia Turner, and true to the report, she was staying in the basement with her five children. While Dashia was determined to find out who had called on her, officers continued their investigation as HSD began checking the welfare of the children. So, you know all of this person who called you guys? No, I know who it is. I'm just not allowed to tell you. Okay, so I don't know why people would call and say things. Okay. They They were concerned because apparently the basement was locked and there were children down here being unsupervised, so they were worried about the conditions for the children and if they were locked in the basement. [clears throat] So, that's why HSD is here to HSD is here to check the welfare of the children. That's the only reason we're involved is because they need to gain access to make sure that everybody's okay. All right, and they're fine cuz I'm I'm pretty much almost always here. Then it shouldn't be a big deal. We'll be out of here in a couple minutes. I just want you guys to know that I'm always here with them. Okay. Okay, yeah. Well, They're They're not I'm not actually in charge of anything here. I'm just here to make sure that they're able to do their job. >> I was in some type of I'm like, I'm always here with them. I'm always here with them. As of right now, I I don't think that you're in any trouble. I don't know that you're in any trouble. Um, I'm just here to make sure that they're able to do their job. That's all I'm doing. And I'm just information gathering cuz anytime I talk to somebody, I got to say who I talked to. Okay. You know what I'm saying? But the fact that Dashia wasn't initially in any legal trouble was about to change once Natalie from HSD dug deeper into the children's conditions. That's right. Are you and I'm going to totally botch this. Is it Dashana? Dashia. Dashia. I was really close. Hi Dashia, my name is Deporta and I work with Racine County CPS. Okay. How are you? I'm okay, thank you. You're good. Thanks. Thank you. So, I just wanted to talk to you. Are these all of your babies? Yes, they're mine. They are and how old are all your kids? They're uh the oldest one, she is going to be 15. Then we have the other one. My youngest one is going to be one, the other one is two, and I have a seven and eight. eight. Seven and seven. Seven. Eight and how old is this one? >> She's one. She's She's one? Yeah. What about the other one? Two. Two. As HSD gathered information on each child, officers went upstairs to map out the household and understand the connection between Dashia and the other adults living there. They're uncles. You in this house, BUT YOU WORRIED ABOUT THESE KIDS. They're all in that They're here to visit for the funeral arrangement, and it's like where they're staying for now, but that was both of their stories. It's like they're here for a funeral and they're staying here. So, they're not related to her. Who? No, I'm No, you're not related to the lady downstairs. >> I'm related to her boyfriend. Oh, okay. >> It's the uncle my uncle that died is his brother. So, I'm not related to her. I'm related to my uncle. So, they're just here with him. They got kids, too, you know. Okay, and they just came here because there was a funeral for your uncle. >> Yeah, we didn't even have the funeral yet. That's what we're trying to explain to you. So, the father of these children, who is that to you? My uncle. That's your uncle. >> Yes. So, he's deceased. No. No, your uncle's alive. Yes. Who Who's your uncle? >> Who's your uncle? Who? The uncle that the one that just No, who's the father of these children? What's that person's name? They're not all his kids. That's just like two of them are. Okay, who's the one you're related to? Quan. Quan? Yeah. Okay. Sorry, I'm just trying to figure out all the who's interconnecting webs of how everybody's connected. So, one more time, that's your uncle's girlfriend. >> girlfriend. Yes. Okay. All right. After getting a clearer picture of the family situation, officers returned to the basement and summarized what they'd found. And this was the moment where everything shifted. The earlier belief that Dashia might walk away without consequences was rapidly falling apart. >> She told me every kid down here is her kid. Okay, cool. Straighten it's Yeah. All right, brother. There's also a kid upstairs. That kid belongs to one of the ladies that's up there. And then the other lady up there has no kids here. Do you want me to go Yeah. >> quarterback that one? Please. Can I go upstairs? What's that? >> Can I go upstairs? Sure. Yeah. Can you guys go upstairs? I thought we didn't live here. Right. So how you going to send somebody upstairs but we don't live here? We don't live right here, right? That girl need to mind her business. Y'all want to search the whole crib and do all that for what? I didn't say that. Then what DO YOU GO UPSTAIRS FOR? She said SEND THEM UPSTAIRS. THAT'S WHAT I'm saying. Send who upstairs? >> Because you're being loud and we're trying to conduct investigation in the basement. >> Investigation of what? >> Possible child Yeah. If you like to keep impeding the the investigation, you can go to jail. How about that? Okay, bye. All I'm asking you to do is to be quiet and go away. I'm sitting here on the phone. This ain't got nothing to do with you. Never knew it was so difficult. Niece lives here. So that's how they Yep. What are you guys looking for up here? Uh just Around. And we're staying They are. Yeah. Okay. Well, that makes it. Yeah. We can do that. Yep. I don't Are you guys able to avoid We can hold off Yeah. Even though Dashia didn't realize it yet, HSD had already made their decision. All five children would be removed and that meant she would be facing serious charges tied to her unfitness as a caregiver. As the investigation continued, Natalie also checked on the other children in the home to ensure no one else was living the way the basement children had been before returning her focus to Dashia. All righty, we'll be back. She said she don't know none of us but like you don't know me so why are you taking my money? Why are you taking rent money from me if you don't know me? It's okay cuz I saw evidence of paying her and I it don't matter. I have evidence of her knowing that we live here, all that. I got evidence of everything. I got evidence of her just in the house 5 minutes ago running around. I I can't kind of say what but she the one did that out there. We already knew she was >> only expect that like I had to put two and two together. She's mad but like what is wrong with you? Like you just said you don't even know us. And she's telling these people So you tell people you tell people falsified stuff. Right. >> That's not the truth. And you don't even like that you just said you don't know us. I don't know you. You don't even know me. And you don't even know my children. You don't got a life. First of all, she was just talking about she didn't care about her uncle dying. She didn't care about everybody else and she didn't care about none of us but you care about all of a sudden what we're doing in here. Exactly. But you want us all so mad about tomorrow. Like you really get out for real. I don't know what Like you said you don't know me but you called on me for my children. No, at the end of the day you don't even know me or my children. I don't even know you. At all. Not from A to Z, not from A to B. I don't know you. Right. Like she's so weird. She don't got a life. You don't have a life and that's the truth. People don't like to hear the truth. You You don't have a life for doing that type of stuff. Playing with somebody's kids like that. That's >> That's not That's not cool. It's not even funny, no joke. Deja, is that how you say it? Yeah, I think so. All right, Miss thing. I need a few things from you. Okay. What is your iPhone number? It's Okay, so I know you've been a little tense about the dad's name but now I now I need it. Now I need his information. It's important that I know who he is, where he is and what what kind of where he is or if he's coming back, what the situation looks like with him. >> Yeah, I don't know where he is right now. And that's totally fine. I just need his See, look, I ain't going to tell you his name. I ain't the one to tell you. I ain't got kids with him. I ain't doing him but he told me he was in Milwaukee. So he's local then. So he's here-ish. >> In Wisconsin but not here. Okay. So I can I have his first name? You guys can rock, paper, scissors on who tells me? Uh look. I don't feel like I have cuz I don't feel like I have to like I'm obligated to give you guys his name. I mean Um yeah. I really Can I tell her something? Cuz I've been in this position. I think your best bet is to tell them the name or it's just going to go left. Everything's just going to flip right the [ __ ] over. Well, I don't know about all of that, but >> Okay. No, yeah. I don't want to nothing to go on left. But it's like you said like like you said it's probably best bet. Uh It's Laquon. Can you spell it for me? L A Q U A N Last name is Russell. I don't know what is I don't like to give people names out when they're not here. You know what I mean? Yo, and I totally get that. >> going to argue with you guys. So, they just Here's the situation is you have a warrant right now. Okay. So, we're going to take you in and they're going to take the kids for until you get this sorted out. Okay. So, they need the parent's the father's contact information so they can handle things. Do you know what that's for? Non-support? >> Non-support and it's body only. Yeah, and it's body only. So, It's who? Body? >> Body only. So, that means we have to take you. You can't find out. Yeah. You have to see a judge. Okay. So, because you're going to jail, there's no way to care for your kids so they have to be taken into custody by me. And depending on where they go from here, whether they go with their fathers or a friend or a family member that you have is where they is where they can go. Question. So, she has an understanding cuz I feel like she should at least know if she's going to be able to know where her kids are when she gets out. >> When she gets out, most definitely. Okay. So, I will okay. So, this is how >> [laughter] >> So, they have So, your kids can go to the right places until you get your My hope I don't I don't want them to go into foster care. I want them to go with a relative that you have or a friend that you have or or anything anybody that is willing to watch your kids for the time being. But because you're going to jail, I have to take them into custody. Okay. Okay? With everything now on the table, officers proceeded with the arrest. Dashia was taken from the home while HSD took custody of the five children. >> Okay. Can you stand up for me? Can you turn around? Do you um do you have anything you need from here like a phone or anything like that? Uh yeah, my phone. Your phone? Where is that at? It's down on the bed. It's down on the bed? So is it going to go with me then or Do you want it to go with you or do you want it to stay here? So is it like going to be put somewhere else then when I go in? It'll be put with your things. With your stuff. They'll keep it with you at the jail. Um you can just um leave it here. Uh You want to go over there now? No. Did did you call out? I didn't know you were here. >> do you remember like a phone number to call and touch you? You don't remember nobody's number? I can't I don't have a phone number. Yeah, I have your number written down here. >> He has my number written I can give you a piece of paper with my number. >> just call you if I don't have another number. Yeah. Okay. >> Cuz your first call should be free. So use it wisely. I've never been in this situation. I've never been arrested. I don't have anything. Woah. We didn't search her. Yeah. Good morning. My name is Officer Davis. I'll be your taxi cab driver today. Anything on your side poking you, sticking you, or causing you any pain? That shouldn't happen. Got guns, drugs, or weapons? No. You understand that? All right. So we're going to keep going? Give you a ride. Guys, that's the first time I've ever seen where somebody probably reach the seat. I never even been in this situation. I haven't had anything like I've never been anything like that.
