It's so dark right now. I didn't see nothing. >> I haven't had any problem with the law. >> It is ridiculous. You're leaving kids unattended while you're over here getting your little high fixed. >> How much have you had to drink tonight? >> A little bit. >> Did you step outside because my mom is a judge? >> That's fine. I need you to turn around. I need you to put your hands behind your back. >> I don't smoke my pills like y'all are not listening. >> A call from a child in Oklahoma and a ride from a mother in Florida. Seemingly two separate incidents, yet sharing the same truth when adults act irresponsibly. It is the children who bear the direct consequences. Can you believe it? A call from a child led the police to a confusing situation with unclear explanations and conflicting statements from the adults involved. >> 911. >> The kids that were here, they're outside right now crying cuz they thought you were >> what? Yeah, that's what >> on March 27th, 2023, the Oklahoma City police received an urgent call from a child reporting that their mother needed help. They immediately rushed to the home and woke a mother who was in a semi-conscious state. >> You okay, ma'am? >> She's moving. >> She was responsive after I kicked the door in. >> Hello. Police department and fire. Can you move? >> Okay. >> Drawers in the way. You got better tools than I do. >> Mad. >> Let's break the door. Huh? >> Is that her right there? >> Yeah, that's her. >> Yeah, she's getting smashed. >> Cut her leg or something. >> Anybody got anything to smash against real quick? >> Nothing in here. That's heavy enough to do that. >> Hey, you been drinking or you've been drinking. She's semi alert. Uh, fires work with her. We will need him. So, never mind there. 97. >> Yeah. Just pin foil there. Brown all over your nose and wrist. >> Hey, how about we be some honest here since we got kiddos that called us and you're over here passed out. >> It is ridiculous. You're leaving kids unattended while you're over here getting your little high fixed. That That is ridiculous. So, let's work with them and try to help some things out. But instead of a reasonable explanation, she claimed someone had laced her prescription medication. >> You got any ID, ma'am? >> What? >> Identification. That's why. >> This is ridiculous. >> It is. It sure is. >> Has nothing to do with me and my kids. >> Actually, it does. They're the one that called 911. >> Who called 911? >> The kids that were here, they're outside right now crying cuz they thought you were >> What? >> Yeah, that's what >> Oh my gosh. >> What's your last name? >> My last name is Weber. Has nothing to do with me. And And >> what's your first name, Miss Weber? >> My name is Ashley. >> Can you spell that for me? S H L E Y. So, who called >> your kids or somebody's kids that were here? The young child. What's your date of birth, Ashley? >> I'm telling you, the cops came and we spoke with them earlier. We explained all this to him. The police, the actual policeman. He apparently did. And the lady that is over the apartment, which is my best friend's mother-in-law, um it's a judge. And we explained all this to her like she was here. They had all this done. >> And please again, can you shut up the word? Um I the neighbors has been nothing beside crazy since and that was because the people that own here apparently it was a big old house before I got here and I was not aware >> just trying to figure out why there's aluminum foil in the bathroom >> and I was just in the bathroom and apparently that's where he done that right up in that shelf or not the shelf the literally just took my medicine and was getting ready to take a shower and get my kids. >> She then spun a long story that she hadn't taken the strange powder voluntarily and had troubles with the landlord. How are you not able to leave the bathroom? >> Sir, I just got here. We was starting to clean everything to get out. The next thing I know, I took my medicine. >> How did he just leave you passed out in the bathroom? >> Sir, he was not here. The cops just picked him up. The cops just got him within him not functioning or not functioning with them or anything. I literally opened the door, took it's a Jared name on there. >> So, when was he taken away? I went on 1 2:00. >> We got here like maybe 20 minutes ago. When we got here, you were passing. >> Are you not hearing what I said? >> You were unconscious. >> I just took my medicine. Went to the bathroom to pee my It was I take it three times a day. Apparently, that's where he had his medicine balled up in that with a foil a bag or whatever. I was literally on the pot sitting there within the time. And then the next thing I know, I was in the floor and this has happened. So, I mean, I I can't tell you exactly. Um, I was not willingly taking no medicine. Um, I was on the phone with my friend and I told her I was going to call him to work because all this crazy stuff has happened. All he the owner could say was there was this Watting Mexican that stayed here and that was that it was hell getting him out. I was not aware of any of this until all this started happening with the landlord and them or the HOA piece. And like I said once again, um the lady was literally a judge. Like that's what she is, a retired judge. Her daughter-in-law has went to prison, all this crap. And she was my best friend. I was not aware that this place was hot. My dad passed away, went through a divorce, and they offered to start renting this team within month in the month. And I thought it was just a good idea to start up here, start working at Mercy Hospital, and just going from there. So >> 1054. You can look at my you can look at my veins or all this crap. Like literally it just happened. So like what happened when I got back? >> I got back the door was locked. I was getting ready to take a shower. The next thing I know I woke up to this. Someone called my kids called. What? Like we was getting ready to take a shower. I was getting ready. you've done homework and you're going to just grab something from the Mexican restaurant at the mall right through here days >> and tried to deny responsibility for the presence of foreign substances in her medication. >> Well, according to the notes that I saw when we got this back here, >> from what I've gathered from us being here, you weren't able to let yourself out of the bathroom. In fact, you were slumped up in the bathroom, weren't able to open the door, and then the kids got upset and called 911. So, they were concerned about you. Is it that strong? Whatever he had in that bottle like that was all clipped up in my to just be on my medicine and me take it and be whatever happened. Is it that strong to do? Like I don't know exactly what was in the bottle besides of what I heard y'all say. >> Shouldn't make it pass out. >> Not my medicine. I'm saying the stuff powder except it was on my medicine in the bottle. >> Depends on what the powder was. >> They said it was fentanyl. That's what he was on. But if it was fentanyl, you wouldn't be breathing right now. This would be a whole different situation. >> That's what he did. It was powder form. He done got it right down here from the people above down below over there. Sellers a bit. >> She even insisted that the police being there was unreasonable. A sign of disrespect toward her. >> Was that what you took? >> Huh? >> Is that what you took, >> sir? I didn't take it. Will, did you not just hear what I said? >> No, I I walked in after the fact. >> Can you not yell at me? I'm just asking. >> Okay. Don't give me attitude either. Okay. I walked in after the fact. I just showed up. Okay. All I know is you were passed out. That's all I know. >> Okay. When you get the rest of the story, we can talk because we're not going to I'm going to argue. >> So, just keep your house shut then. Okay. We're not talking. I'm not asking you any questions or anything. >> Excuse me. I can talk. This is my house. >> All right. >> And actually, um could you step outside cuz you can step outside unless you have a warrant. You're not >> I have a legal reason to be here. So, >> well, like I said, my mom is a judge. >> That's fine. This is recorded so that's fine. >> That is completely fine. There's no reason for you to trick me like I'm a dread. I just got the guy out of here that was good. >> You do not have to be disrespectful and neither do I. >> Who am I speaking with? Are you the paramedic? >> Okay. Can I get a shirt on? Because I do not like being treated by this officer like I am some freaking like I have no clue who he is. And he's not going to come here and disrespect me in my own nothing. But he's not going to sit here and act like this to me in my home. This is ridiculous. >> Can we do a few more questions? Get it over with. Get a shirt on and get everything over with. What's your first and last name for me? >> My name is Ashley Weber. >> Okay. S H L E Y R. >> Yes. >> However, the more she explained, the more unclear her story became. Some conflicting details seem to shift responsibility onto others with her ex-boyfriend Michael Mnt mentioned most often. >> You really need to go to the hospital. >> I don't I'm not I don't want to unless my mom is here for my kids. I do not. I literally check my medicine. That's why the guy that was here this morning went to jail because he has been doing dental or boxes whatever it is from the neighbors downstairs. So it was not willingly me taking this medicine in my medicine bottle and his was a powder form that was on my medicine I guess. So no longer than me coming in taking my medicine going to the bathroom getting ready to take a shower. Apparently I was passed out. >> All righty. We got to do one more step since you won't go to the hospital. We're going to have to talk to our medical director. Can you talk to him real quick? Thank you. Oliver, you there? >> Yeah. >> So, how long did you live here again? What did you say? A couple months. >> No, I just moved. We got here in August and everything was fine. And with the per with the path of that my now ex-boyfriend was working at this liquor store up here. Um, so it was a big old deal of the neighbors or the people that owns here is my they lived here in the past and she went to court. She's been to prison, my dad passed away. I went on a 30-year marriage. So anyways, I work nights 24-hour shift. And apparently in the process of these me working and him working these hours up here, he was messing with these people down here literally selfinol and the girls pregnant too. Anyways, all this was happening when I was at work. Come to find out, I found out everything that happened and started kicking him out with the cops. He was turned in. They knocked on the door this morning. I wouldn't let him in today for him. So >> So he's in jail now, right? As of today. >> Yes. And it's not for something he did. I guess they have a hold on him. He has 10 business days to let Oklahoma City or not Oklahoma City, Sequoia County come and get him from Oklahoma City. So he had it all like in this bottle in the pool. He had it all like in my medicine to apparently I guess to hide what he's literally clueless when it comes to medicine. I don't know until I started the people that did live here. They said if we find any or whatever it is from them and they said they had it hid in that walk right there. >> Is that that's where you had it? >> No, they said that's where they always their right there. See that thing that comes up? Yeah. >> So anyways, um it was all that happened and I guess that's where he decided to. So when I figured out all this stuff, I said I would not allow this around my children. um was in the process of kicking him out and then he kind of flipped and was like almost to the process of like um I wouldn't say uh holding like he would let me go as long as he was listening if that makes any sense at all. Like I would rather I'd be able to go through my day as long as he was there. >> However, the situation was not ended. The question now was how far would her story drag Michael out? So anyways, after I get literally went to get something, he took the $10 in gas and came back here to take my medicine and that was the thing. Um, he had enough wool, the whole box, and used that drawer right there. The far drawer >> over here. >> Yes. You always see what he used. >> What's his name again? >> Michael, but he's never been in trouble up here or anything until this happened. And the people downstairs is Daniel and Lacy. I don't know Daniel's last name, but I do know he hated me because he offered him fent more than one. More and cuz we had a dog that which is my mom's now. Every time we'd go walk the dog, he was out there on working on his uh I don't even know. It's a silver SUV type thing. I can't tell you. But he would be up there till like 3:00 in the morning. And um every time that he would be in contact with Mikey, it was over >> it was over the dip call until finally I caught him flip and um that's why he's out. But he was using my medicine bottles to put his stuff in gone completely which is not a big deal to me. Like I don't take him every day. It was literally as needed. And it was usually like if I needed it was the time to be like when I came home to go to sleep and it wasn't every day. This all happened like I came home, took my medicine, was getting ready to take a shower, pack and you see the boxes packing his stuff and then >> I guess this happened in that process time. >> Scary. >> It is scary that I literally walked in there and then I woke up and y'all was here. So that's how bad I guess that's how strong this and the lady that works here or that owns it best friend's mother-in-law. She don't play about anything like that. Like she even put her daughter-in-law in jail. She's >> Is there a landlord out here today? No, >> but that's the thing. She don't care if it's family, daughter, whoever. If you're doing something wrong, she's going to >> she's going to I guess she did them, which I was not aware that this was a house prior to that. All they could say when he came over here, all he could say was there was a Mexican squatting in here and took for months to get them out. That's what his exact words was. Every time >> the lease on here, is it under your name or is it his name? >> It is not at least in anybody's name. Mike, it was just my best room. first person >> I was here and they let him stay. >> He just took over. Then after that we kind of just took over. >> I started paying the rents and everything. >> It was never with him like no I'm scared I have to have this medicine every day that I take. So now I don't know like if it happened like that then I don't know if I should throw it away or what I but if I don't take it I'm going to be sick. >> Faced with this the police had to explain how to handle the medication and powder and told the mother to contact her doctor to clarify the truth. If you do start to feel worse, if you feel faint again, please, please, please, I cannot stress this enough. Hold us back because if you pass out in there again for whatever reason, I'm not interested in, okay? I'm solely here for your health and wellbeing. Okay? If anything changes, you start to feel faint or feel more sick or you're going to pass out, I need you to call 911 right away. >> Okay? >> That's I mean, yes, sir. That's fine. Um, that is me. I don't know what should I not take my medicine away. I'm supposed to take it three times a day. >> Only take your medicine as is recommended by your doctor. Don't take any less or don't take any more. That's fine. If you're taking the medicine that's recommended by your doctor, >> I'm saying if that powder that was in there, I don't know how much got out of what he had whatever. >> So like that's what I'm saying. I don't know like as soon as I check that apparently was in there. I don't know what it was powdered for. So I don't know what's on the bottle and what's not or you know the peel or she got thrown away or I mean I don't know. once said to take. >> If it's a prescribed medicine and it hasn't been tampered with, I wouldn't throw it away. I would continue taking it as you're prescribed. >> It was That's exactly what I took. >> Yeah. If that's prescribed to you and you're taking it like you should continue >> with his powder in there, though, is what I'm saying. >> Well, I don't know what that powder is. So, I would probably get the pills away from the powder, right? I'd probably put them into a different container. >> What I'm saying was already all over the pills and I don't know. >> I would I would say follow up with your doctor. I can't identify what that is. I would give your if you have a primary care doctor, right, who prescribe that to you. I would give them a call as soon as possible, explain what happened and follow their recommendations cuz I'm not a doctor. They'll be able to recommend you more professional advice than I would. Please do follow up with your doctor as soon as possible. As far as the pills and having the powder on them, I can't say for sure whether to continue or not taking them. I can't give you advice on that because I don't know what the powder is. >> When her story ended, the police made the arrest. Although adults may have their reasons, for children, safety must always come first. >> What was your first time? And I'm sorry. I I said I walked in after the fact. You know, I don't I all I knew whenever I was coming here is that there was a, you know, female passed out in the bathroom. Kids were in the home and they were they were concerned. Okay. They actually thought that you were gone. Okay. So, they were scared. So, I I show up here. You're obviously, you know, up and breathing, talking and so on. I don't know what what's going on. I don't know the backstory. So, my name is Officer Cho. >> Okay. What is your name? Ashley. >> Ashley. Okay, here's what's going to happen. Okay, like I said, I don't have details as to what happened or anything. There's another officer that was here before me as well as my supervisor. What I need you to do right now, what we're what we are going to do right now, actually, is you and I are going to go downstairs. Okay. I'm going to have you sit in my car while I speak to other officers and see what what we're going to do. Okay. Obviously, we need to make arrangements for like he said, you know, he'd like another adult to be here with your kids, you know, concerns and all these things. Okay. For you to sit in my car, you will be in cuffs in my car. Okay? You can't sit in the backseat of my car without cuffs. Okay? her policy. Excuse me. >> Can y'all not come in here and sit with me? I'm not >> No, we'll have to go down there. Okay. And your kids are down there. I mean, I'm not going to do I'm not going to cuff you in front of your kids, but I'll I'll I'll have you sit in my car and your kids. I saw them when I came up here, but I don't know exactly where they're at downstairs. Okay. >> I mean, I don't feel comfortable going. >> Okay. Well, not too bad. We're going to stand up with cuffs. We're going to go and stand up. I don't care. We're I don't care how comfort you feel or not feel. We're standing up. >> Okay. Okay. I mean, what am I going to what is going on like as far as >> Can y'all explain me what I'm getting? Like, am I going to jail or for what? >> I took my medicine and it had been Are you serious? >> 100% serious. >> This is not okay. >> You admitted to him that was in your hand. >> I did not admit to that. That was a lie. I told y'all that he just went to jail this morning. This is ridiculous. My god. >> Sir, please do not be rude to me. I don't know. I pulled right. You want me to be rude? I could have left pulled you in front of your kids. I pulled over here so your kids not seeing handcuff. That's not being rude. That's being considered. That's >> not explaining to what y'all's doing. >> I just told you you're going to jail. >> This is ridiculous. Y'all are sitting there saying this and it had to do with you and it's bent powder was on my medicine from the people downstairs. >> You smoke your pills, huh? >> I don't smoke my pills. Like y'all are not listening. >> Okay. Well, I was there when I kicked in the door >> and I opened your >> They did not. You did not. Fire tore the door off the hinges. >> I'm talking about this morning. >> We weren't here this morning. This is this afternoon 6:00 in the afternoon. Oh my god. This is ridiculous. Like you're sitting here saying I said I smoke my deal. That was not said either. >> That was not like what the [ __ ] >> You got inside your body or inside your cavities or anything like that. No up inside your body. >> I'm a nurse. No, I don't. >> Okay. Checking dropping anything back there. We'll go this way. I'll just stay in front on the off chance you throw up. That way you're not accidentally getting me with it. Don't think you will. But >> the 35-year-old mother, later identified as Ashley Weber, was taken into custody on charges of child along with an outstanding warrant from Cherokee County. Court records show she posted $100,000 bail and was released shortly afterward. The isn't the drugs. It's the lack of awareness and responsibility in caring for children. It is that truly their safety and well-being. Yet Ashley wasn't the only case. A few months later, another mother was involved in a dangerous driving incident by putting her two young children in an unsafe vehicle, sparking an urgent investigation. 11 p.m. On February 10th, 2024, Palm Coast, Florida, police received a call about a woman driving under the influence with two children in the car. According to witnesses, the vehicle was moving dangerously through a heavily wooded area. Officers immediately arrived on the scene to confront the 24year-old driver and speak with the witnesses present. >> You folks witnessed it or you were >> No, I was just pulling over when I was going home. >> You were on your way. Okay. >> Did you see what happened or >> Okay. >> You don't live around you? >> No, I live in the police station right here. >> We have somebody everybody else. I crawled out the back seat and I got the kids out. >> You got the kids out where they buckled in. >> One of them was actually calm down. Don't you know what I mean? They live in Javier. Do you know where they are? >> The police station. We we live in the street. >> Okay. Take a deep breath. You don't >> I'm going to hang out with you and maybe she can call her mom >> where we can find out where they are. Is that good? Okay. Thank you. I'll have her call you back in like 10 minutes. >> Come out here. You want to get your phone or you want me to get ma'am? >> There's snakes behind you, too. >> Ma'am. Ma'am. >> Hey, ma'am. >> Char. Come over here. >> Then she began explaining the incident, opening with, "It's so dark. I didn't see nothing." >> Came out of your friend's house and went back. >> This is my first time. It's so dark. I didn't see nothing. It's so dark right now. I didn't see nothing. I swear. >> Okay. And where where's your friend live? >> She She lives right there. >> She lives right there. >> So, you drove >> in the 57. >> So, you just drove straight across? >> Yeah. >> Yeah. And I was answering in his school. I'm so sorry I didn't. This is my first time. I have no clue. >> So you were hanging out at his house tonight. >> No, I was hanging. Yeah. >> Were the kids buckled in? >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> How fast do you think you were going? >> No, not that fast. It's just that right there. I don't know. It was a stop cuz it's so dark and I'm not around here. I live in the second. I don't know. I don't know anything about here. I would just visit another friend and she can she can literally just come here and she can talk to you. >> There's nothing wrong with visiting friends. We're just making sure it's the first time. I'm so sorry. I don't I'm not around from here. >> Okay. >> I'm from Puerto Rico and I'm just so scared. I don't I've been through a lot and I don't want none of you all like I just >> We're here to make sure everybody's okay. >> I know. I know. I'm just scared. Like right now I have no butt. So >> Oh, you have mom coming, right? >> Yeah. I mean, >> so your grandma gets here. We'll put them on. >> Yeah. >> Is he coming? >> I don't know cuz supposedly I'm like just hanging out with a friend like with her toddler and my toddler, my 2-year-old. It was just everything was just so fine. I'm just not around here. The mother broke down in tears, repeating, "This is the first time I've ever had trouble with the law. It's >> okay. >> They're okay. They're right here. We're getting their jackets on them. Make sure they stay warm. That's all." Okay. And we just Okay. >> Are you And you're definitely sure you don't want to go to the hospital. >> This is my first time. I don't know. >> That's fine. Okay. >> Where are your shoes? >> I don't know. They're supposed to be in the car. >> They're not going anywhere. No, they're supposed to be in the car. This is my first time. I haven't I haven't had any problem with the law. This is my first problem with the law right now. We're in here cuz you crashed. That's all. >> Because you don't want to scare them. I know you had an accident. Are you like >> I don't know. I just don't know how. >> Do you have a driver's license in the car? >> I do. Yes. >> Are you the registered owner of the car? >> Yes. Yes. It's just It was really dark. I'm not even joking. Um I mean >> the only reason it's late right now is cuz we have our lights here. That's all. >> I don't know. I need some help. >> Your mom? >> Um I have no idea. >> We just have them back. >> The kids can go to them. But yeah, that's a red Toyota. >> Yeah, that's you're bringing kids to them. >> So kids can go there. But >> goodbye. >> I don't say goodbye. >> Well, you can go with them. >> If you don't want them. Still, the police followed proper legal procedures, thoroughly searching and inspecting the vehicle. >> You guys have the car seats on the car, too. >> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. No, they they need it. No, they need it. >> Okay, >> ma'am. If you want to come back here get cut off, they can go. Ma'am, >> ma'am, we're going to take the car seats out of the car. Come back. Okay. >> Okay. >> Okay. >> Okay. >> Come here. Come here. >> No, I'll look right here. >> No. Come, come back in here, >> ma'am. >> Can I see you take the car seat? >> Step back. We know how to take car seats out of the car. >> Okay. I don't want you getting hurt trying to get it out. There's >> Do you know where your shoes here? Where are your shoes at? In the front or >> They're in the front. >> Okay. >> What's your first name, ma'am? >> No. >> What is it? >> Sharonette. >> Sharonette. >> Yeah. >> Do you have insurance on the vehicle? >> Yeah. >> I just pray for it. As for the mother, she continued to panic, looking for her children and crying upon realizing they were at risk of being taken from her. >> Stay here. >> So, you were you were driving off Sesame. >> Yeah. >> And you came straight across. >> Yeah. Well, they tried to stop, but there was some girls. I think she was trying to get a turn. Um, it just it wasn't really a good line. And then I'm not familiar with this road. I >> Did you have your headlights on? >> If you want to be honest, you want to turn it on. If you wanted to turn it on, it's not that good. >> They're not very good, but you had them on. >> I did not. >> I didn't see your shoes, just so you know. >> They're in the front seat. They're supposed to be in the front seat. >> Okay. If you shine that light, >> I appreciate it. >> If anything changes and you want to go to the hospital, call us back. We'll come up and get you. If not, enjoy your night. >> My kids. >> Yeah. Okay. >> Okay. Thank you. >> They're with mom. Okay. They're with your mom. Okay. The kids are okay. Oh my god. >> It's all right. >> They're supposed to be in the front seat. >> Okay. I can't find any of them. >> Okay. >> What What What did they look like? >> Um I had um it was um like like uh had bright shoes like red um >> like sneakers or sandals. >> Shoes. >> No. No. None of them. Um none of them. It's supposed to be bright and dark. >> Mom's here. All right. >> Mom, the babies are with mom. Okay. >> I just don't have nobody. I have nobody. >> Oh, we got mom. Your mom's here. Your your brothers are here. Okay. >> I was right there. >> I understand. >> I got no lights and I just I don't know. I don't know what happened. >> I understand. >> Shortly after, her Miranda rightites were read and she began facing a series of questions from the police. But instead of clear answers, they received a jumble of statements, further clouding the truth of the incident. So, I need you to listen to me for a second here. Okay. So, what I'm going to let you know right now is that um the crash investigation is completed. Okay. What I'm doing now is I'm starting a criminal investigation. I'm going to explain everything to you. But before I ask you any questions or you make any statements, I'm going to advise you of your constitutional rights. Okay. >> All right. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. The right to talk to a lawyer and have him or her present with you while you are being questioned. If you cannot afford to hire a lawyer, one will be appointed to represent you before any questioning if you wish.
