In Virginia, a mother stubbornly drove with the car door open and the child not wearing a seat belt. >> Lesie has proof. Legitimate proof. That is a lie. >> Are you going to give us that information? No. >> Of course, it would play a whole different deal if the kids were in seat belt. >> Shame on you. >> Hold on. Hey, ma'am. >> In another corner of America, another mother fell asleep while her child was about to drown. >> She was totally by herself. Mom's asleep >> cuz she's she never came out of the house. I don't have anybody to keep her. >> And what was the outcome? You still charge your mother for putting her children in danger. You have now been banned from Walmart. >> Yes. We're living in an era where negligence is disguised as love and irresponsibility is sugarcoated with the excuse of being overwhelmed. Welcome to Virginia, where car doors fly open, children are put at risk, and the mother is too busy proving she did nothing wrong. >> The door came open and then I pulled over in this parking lot to close it. On August 27th, 2022, police responded to an emergency call about a woman driving with a rear passenger door wide open while two innocent children sat inside. At the scene, she kept making excuses, blaming it all on a broken door, then flipped, got combative, and scowlled like someone caught red-handed. >> How you doing, man? >> Highway >> with the door open. >> The door came open and we did not do it on purpose. That's why I pulled over. >> Was this the door that came open? >> Yes, sir. >> Yes, sir. >> Uh, just hang tight for one second, man. You You can if you need to crack this, you can. >> But nonetheless, the door swung open and that's why I pulled over in this parking lot to close the door. Never endanger my children. How dare you disrespect me in front of my >> So, we got a call that the van was traveling southbound and that the door was wide open and people could see kids inside. So, it it comes off, you know, My kids are serious. My kids are safe. >> Is there like something wrong with the house? >> You're good, man. Just take that. You can point it out. >> Don't answer any questions. >> Yeah, he's he's hanging tight. >> Sit in the car and close the door, please. Yes, sir. >> Did y'all say something was Is there something wrong with the lap? >> Yes, it is. And that's why we're going to the auto shop to get it fixed right now. The door came open and then I pulled over in this parking lot to close it. He's saying that the door was open a long time ago. So, unless he has proof, legitimate proof, that is a lie. That's why I pulled over in this parking lot. Hey, I'm okay. You can be loud with him, but I'm talking to you nicely. Like I said, I'm figuring out what's going on. I just got here. Where did you say the door came open at? >> Coming down this road. Coming right down this road. And when he came open, I pulled over to closed the door. And that's when he pulled up behind me. >> Okay. >> So, Leslie has it on video camera. >> Well, we have a witness that called in. That's That's what we're saying. >> That is not what you can say. >> I don't think anybody would just randomly call for a door open. >> Door has issues. >> Yeah. And I I I'm not disagreeing. If the door has issues, that's one thing. >> What problem? >> This is his stop. I don't know what I'm just going off of what the call was. I'm making sure everything's fine. Kids are in seat belts. I >> Yeah, they are. I would never endanger my children. >> And I'm not saying you wouldn't. >> He did. >> You don't have to make this out of >> No, you're good, man. You're good. Like I said, I I'm I'll speak to him. Like I said, we're just going off a witness that called in saying the door was open traveling down the roadway. So, just hang tight for a second. >> What's going on? >> I'm waiting for him. Like I said, I'm just standing by his partner. >> So hot, man. Can I open this door, please? >> I I can't have you open up the door. I'm going to have this one open. I I understand, man, but just for now, we just got to hang tight. Just see what's going on. >> The mother forehand initially seemed willing to cooperate. But the moment officers asked for information for child protective services, she flat out said no, as if being a mom gave her the right to reject any law that felt inconvenient. >> Ma'am, how long have you been having problems with the door? If you don't mind me asking, >> I do, and I'm not answering her, but sir, what's taking so long? It's hot out here. >> I get a t, but I they're talking, so I don't know what's going on. I'm about to get out so I can find out what's going on. That's why >> don't get out now because >> what >> I'm telling you because as you pulled over, you can't get out. >> Danny, she's trying to go. >> What's going on, man? >> You don't tell me to stay in my vehicle. >> I don't think so. I'd like to know what's going on. There's no incident. Door can't open. I'm pulled over. Y'all got to think some money rather than support system, right? Give me my ticket so I can go to Okay. We also need to get the information. I don't think so because we need to call services about this. No, I don't think so. >> What seems to be the problem? >> What do you think is the problem? >> The door unhatched. >> Okay. I'm not arguing with you guys about it. Okay. You need to sit here. There is a solution that's going on. Okay. Do you understand that? >> About the door coming open while there are children. We are mandated and recorded services and let them know that this happened because whether it was a whether it was a mistake or not. Okay, we have to let them know. So we need their agents and their names to get to service. We absolutely have to get that information and if you don't give us that information then we will charge you with obstruction. Are you going to give us that information? No. >> Okay. And we'll charge with that. Okay. Now, before I even get this going, once we give you the information, right? Does that mean we can y'all calling them? Then we can leave and then we could call them ourselves and straight the story out. What happened? >> Okay. So, the way that it works is that Yeah. We call child protect services. We let them know what's going on and then they'll get our time, their own investigation were in danger. We're not >> we're not trying to say, "Oh, you guys were doing horrible things. It's our job to report it to child protective services." >> Virginia law is clear. Car doors must be securely closed and function properly. 19 VAC30-70-250 and operating a vehicle with defective equipment is illegal. Section 46.2-10003. While the law doesn't directly state that doors must remain closed while driving. Taken together, these regulations mean forehand committed a serious equipment safety violation. >> I'm just going to crack it, man. I usually don't do that, but you're being cooperative. So, like I said, I I'll work with you if you work with me. Is this the first time it's happened with the kids in the car? Is the door okay? >> Usually I have it tied up. >> Yeah, >> but you can see it's thinning, right? >> Yeah. Social services, they know that our car is having issues. So, it's not like they don't know. So, if you guys need to report it, then it's not like they don't know that we have issues with this car. This is our >> I mean, we'll make it make them aware, too, that you're going to get it fixed, too. >> Like I said, we're we're not trying to make things hard on y'all, but at the same time, we have a job to do. >> Well, I'm just protective when it comes to my children. >> No, you're a mother. You should be 100%. 100%. I don't blame you. At the same time, when somebody sees you driving down the road, and they may have saw it literally right after it happened. It could have been less than 5 minutes after. >> I'm pretty sure it was as soon as it happened. I was trying to find pull over. >> So, when we get that call, we just have to literally make contact, make if we see it open, make sure everything's fine. But if you're going to get it fixed, then that I mean that plays a big deal, too. >> Service know about this car. Hell, they're the onesating car >> because at the end of the day, it can be a safety hazard. I know you know that it can be a safety manner. Like if this is >> this is the first time it happened otherwise I wouldn't. >> Yeah. Of course it would play a whole different deal if the kids were in seat belts and this was open. That would that would been looked at a lot different. >> They was hanging out the side. >> Yeah. Never would do that. >> No. Cuz you'd be surprised how many people would pull over and the kids aren't in seat belts. >> I have a question for you though. If it was a Wrangler Jeep cuz it has no doors on it also. Would you pull us over also? >> So with that's I'd have to look into that. I I would. But with it being that's the specified vehicle and that's the vehicle make. Obviously most of them yeah you can take the doors off. Most of them have the half door with that vehicle make. I I see what you're saying but at the same time the vehicle's made for this door to be closed just as our vehicles door is meant to be closed. The door is meant to be closed. It has to be closed. I get what you're saying though. What are you saying? >> State door has to be closed. It has to be closed by state law. >> The door well while operating the vehicle and traveling. So for these Yeah. the doors have to be closed. You can't drive down the roadway with the door open. >> Yeah. Well, >> nobody was trying to do that. >> Yeah. No, I'm not. I'm just saying in general, >> like you said, same as a W. >> Yeah. I mean, right there. >> You got a point. But at the same time, it it's it's how the vehicles are made. But I I I get what you're saying. >> Oh, like a T Oh, like a T um T- R three wheel. >> All right. Y'all just hang tight, okay? They'll be done soon. After arguing to no avail, Forehand accepted a citation with three violations. But instead of staying quiet, she exploded like someone falsely accused, turning the whole situation into a ridiculous performance filled with tears, shouting, and even a threat. Don't you dare accuse me of hurting my child. >> All right, Miss Forehand, here's your driver's license. So, I've got some citations for you. These are your copies. You're going to be cited three times today. You're going to be cited for reckless driving. That's driving with the door open. And they're going to have two citations for contributing to the delinquency of a minor. One for each child. All right. So, this is all >> being contributed to a delinquent of a minor. >> So, putting them in danger. Okay. >> So, you've got a court date of September 14th at 8:15. >> So, you charge me with putting my children in danger on purpose when you know what I told you. The door sling open by itself by accident. You still charged your mother for putting her children in danger. Yes, I listened to what you said. I will see you in court because that is not the truth. >> Well, we've got information that the doors were open all the way from short lane. You guys were in the in the gas station up there. You left the gas station, the doors were open all the way down 17. I saw you with the door open and then when I pulled out, that's when you closed the door and pulled into here. So, we'll that I'm going to give you a court date and then we'll talk about it in court. So, September 14th, 8:15 in Gloss County Court. That's going to be your counter determination for all three of these. I won't be there at this one. This is just going to be for you to tell the court if you have an attorney or you need them to provide you for an attorney. Then they'll set you a trial date, a hearing date that we will all be in court. So these are your copies of all three. All the information on here is correct. What I need from you is I need you to sign all three of these. It's not admission of guilt. It's just saying that you understand that you have a court date and that you'll appear in those court dates. So I'll give it to you one at a time. >> I'll give them to you one at a time cuz they're carbon copy. >> So right here at the X. Okay. >> Shame on you. >> Hold up. Hey, ma'am. >> Shame on you. >> Don't snatch for me. >> Shame on you for trying to say that my children. >> Listen, I need you to settle down. Okay. I need you to settle down. >> How dare you say I was trying to my children? >> We'll talk about it in court. >> You expect me to settle down? >> Miss Borhan, you have to settle down. >> You said I was trying to my children. >> I didn't say you were trying to hurt your children. >> That's pretty much what you wrote me a ticket for. >> Miss, you need to calm down or we're going to have social services come up here. >> Settle down. Snap in front of the kids. Drive them. >> Give me the paper. >> So, look. I I need you to do this a certain way because they're carbon copying. I don't want you to sign through them. Okay? Just one at a time. Right here on the X on this one. We're going to do it three times. You can't sign on top of them cuz it'll go through. Okay? So, sign right here. The X. It's not an admission of guilt. >> Sounds like to me. >> It's not an admission of guilt. It's just saying that you will go to court. That's all. It's just stating that you promised to appear in court. That is it. >> Okay. The pen is right there. You put the pen down. >> Give me the pen. >> Ma'am, you you put the pen down. >> I got the pen. Give me the paper so I can sign it. Please, >> you got to calm down. >> Listen, you got to calm down. I keep them down and put them in danger. >> You got one more time before we have before we have social services come here. >> No, no, no. >> Okay. Are you going to settle down so you can sign these summones? It's the only time I'm going to ask you. >> Give me the paper. >> Give me the clipboard. >> You're allowed to be upset. You're just not allowed to act like this. >> Just sign me way I want to. You don't control me. >> Not in front of your kids. Not on captop. You just just pretty much said enough in front of my children. Just just give that to me, please. >> Sign right there on the X. Same place on the X. >> Is he licensed to drive? >> Miss forehand. She asked you a question. Is he licensed to drive? >> Drive my vehicle. >> Same place on the X. >> I was asking because if you're this upset, maybe he should. >> Okay, sure. You can drive. Yeah, license. But if you need to rent something, no, I'll drive it. We've been sitting here long enough and my children are hot. >> I think he's already been I think he's already been >> Okay, then he can drive. Excuse me. This car was just in an accident one day ago. The door opened by accident. I would never have my door open for my children to fall out or put them in reckless. Instead of you taking my word, you decide to take me to court. What's your name? >> Deputy S. It's all on the ticket. >> Good. Okay. >> This is the one he ran already. Thank you. >> I apologize for any mistakes. She's mad. >> She's a mother. >> She's allowed to be upset. >> I understand she's upset. All right. Drive safe. >> All right. You're going to need to sub that lady crunch services. >> Yes. >> But that's not all. The side story takes us to Walmart where she was caught failing to fully pay at the selfch checkckout with her child standing right next to her. This isn't just a legal hazard. It also risks teaching the child to downplay wrongdoing and blurs the lines between right and wrong, law and morality. >> Hi. >> Hi. >> Hi. >> I need to speak with you again. >> And if you want to send him over to the car, I can talk to just you by yourself. It's because something happened at Walmart. We don't need him to hear it. >> Okay. What happened at Walmart? >> Do you want to send him with the others? >> No. >> Come on. >> So, it's going to be Ken beforehand again. >> Do what, ma'am? >> I will talk to you, but I just want to do it in front of your child. Okay. >> Do what, >> Miss? I will speak to you. Okay. It's going to be just me and you, but we're going to wait until and and then I'm going to let you leave. I just have to speak to you real quick. And it's about something at Walmart. Okay. >> At Walmart? >> Mhm. >> Are you kidding me? >> No, ma'am. >> Okay. Ma'am, I believe that's excuse. Wait a minute. >> Miss, I told you I would talk to you. I just don't want to do it in front of your child. >> Arrest me for >> I'm not going to arrest you. I'm not going to arrest you. >> I just need to speak to you and I don't want to do it in front of your child right now. >> Okay. Then I'll speak to you right now in front of your child, which is what I was trying to avoid earlier. However, you have now been banned from Walmart. You are absolutely not allowed to come back. If you come back, you will be charged with trespassing and they're probably going to charge you with larseny because they have you on record as stealing through check selfch checkckout. Okay, >> now you've been told. So if you come back, you'll be trespassed. Understood? >> No, it is. >> Can't come back. >> Okay. >> I'm sorry. Go ahead. You're welcome to leave now. I told you I wasn't going to arrest you. >> Leave. >> I'm at Walmart. >> Don't follow behind me. >> We're not going to. If you want to have her walk towards the the car, I will speak to you by yourself. this Walmart. >> Walmart asked us to respond. I had no idea who I was responding to. And they've asked for her to be trespassed. She's no longer allowed to be on the property. If she comes back, she will be charged with trespassing. And that is because there's going to be an open case for Larseny. >> For Larsson, or did she steal? >> I I don't know that. I didn't get those I didn't get those particulars because you guys are leaving. So, I had to come and catch her. Mr. Smith, I don't know. It's not that I won't tell you. So, I don't know. >> I think Evie wanted to tell you guys something. I think I think they did steal something. >> Okay. We'll just have to add it to whatever case you guys are working. When the law finally caught up with her, forehand was charged with shoplifting or altering merchandise under $1,000 and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Under Virginia law, she faces 1 to2 years in prison. Fines ranging from $2,000 to $5,000 and a $5,000 bond to be released. We can't change the mother in this video, but we can change ourselves, the way we parent, the way we lead, because every action we take becomes a mirror for the generation watching us. Goodbye, Virginia. And welcome to Flaggler County, where a kiddie pool, a 2-year-old child, and one careless nap were enough to turn into a thirdderee felony case. >> You know, she was in that pool by herself, and we didn't want to see her drown. >> On July 28th, 2024, a 2-year-old child was left unattended in a pool. The child was in the water for an extended period while the 26-year-old mother was fast asleep inside the house, completely unaware and unconcerned. After receiving the call, police rushed to the scene. But the child's mother, Cassidy Ren, and her boyfriend were still fast asleep. So deep in slumber that even the neighbors calls couldn't wake them. >> Nice to meet you. I'm deputy coma. >> Good. And this is my husband, Dave. He's on the porch. The child. I'm not going to say it in front of her. But that pink pool right there, she was in that by herself. I've asked her mother how we knocked on the door. Door was already open. I hollered for them. My husband hollered for them. And nobody has come out yet. >> Okay. So, you know, she was in that pool by herself and we didn't want to see her drowned. I know of friends that their children have drowned from them just so that >> she didn't have like any like pool gear on or anything. >> She was totally by herself. Mom's asleep or something. I don't know what they're doing. >> Okay. So, so what's going on today? >> Oh, I literally I was just sleeping. >> Yeah. >> Did you guys Did you guys have like a long night? >> Yeah, >> it is. It is 6:00. All right. So, uh, the neighbor over there, she found her in this pool, this little baby pool. And, uh, she like opened your door and she said she was hollering for you guys. And you guys want to know where does it where's the child usually at? >> Where do you guys sleep? >> In your room's over to the left and she's in the she's in the middle room. >> No, not middle room. In the front. >> The front room. >> Yeah. >> Yeah, man. We just sleep. This is the first time she actually done some bull crap. How old is she? >> She just turned three. >> She just turned three. >> Yeah. >> What's her name? >> Naa. >> Naa. Oh my god. >> You got to get one of those. >> How do you spell Na? >> E V E. >> N E V E H. >> What's her last name? What's her date of birth? >> Um 620 21. >> Well, they said they've been she's been with them for 20 minutes. So, and they were just concerned for your guys safety cuz she they opened the door and yelled at you guys for about 20 minutes and you guys weren't answering. So, she was concerned if you guys were in. >> They open the door. >> They said the door was open. >> Oh, yeah. >> Yeah. >> I don't understand. >> Usually one of those things that you can turn it and they can't actually open. >> This is plastic knobs on doorork knobs. Do you guys have your licenses on you by >> any chance? Do you mind go grabbing them? >> The young mother was quick to defend herself. This has never happened before. A classic excuse for recurring irresponsibility. >> Are we going to be arrested? >> What's up? >> Are we going to be arrested? >> I'm uh >> This is never This has never ever happened before. I >> don't know how in the world she opened the hand door. >> Yeah. What time What time did you guys go to bed? And when was the last time you saw her? >> We had taken a nap with her. That's why I don't understand. Like, >> okay. She was sleeping with you guys. >> Usually she would wake me up. This has never ever happened. She wakes me up and lets me know, "Hey, mommy." or you know so that we know if she's hungry or if she I'm a very alert mom never this has never happened. >> No, this is >> she's never walked outside of the house before or anything like that. >> The only one time that she did was Fourth of July cuz we were over at their house for well I have another neighbor like a street over and we were at their party for Fourth of July and everything. We had stopped at their house for a little bit cuz we just cut through the corner in their backyard cuz the house is right over there. And I had came home. We both had came home and I just changed both of our outfits cuz we were both in bathing suit and they didn't have a pool or anything and I just wanted to get out of the bathing suits and I had the door was left open like this and she had just I mean I had eyesight of her though and she ran over to the neighbor's house. So that was you know I watched her that time but this time like this this has never happened. Yeah. Do you do you understand? Uh yeah. I mean, she's a 3-year-old child. That's like about a foot of water. A child can drown in 3 or 4 in of water. You understand how dangerous that can be? Uh do you mind talking Do you mind talking to uh my partner here for a second? >> She's never gone outside by herself before. Well, except that one time. A statement that starts off firm as a nail in the wall only to pull the nail out with its own hand. It's happened before. Now it's happened again. And who's to say it won't happen next time? Today was lucky, but luck doesn't wait around forever. >> I got to ask you a few questions. >> Okay, >> before I do, I'm going to read you your rights. That doesn't mean you're in trouble. >> Are you arresting me? >> I have to come up to with that conclusion. I'm just going to read your rights. Just a formality. >> I don't my I've never been away from her like that. I can't like this never happens. I >> Okay, but do you understand this? >> We're going to work through that together. So, let's try to get through the question and I promise you we'll end the line. >> First of all, I'm deputy coma. And the reason why I'm here is obviously this incident that happened with your town. These are your rights. You have the right to remain silent and anything you say may be used as evidence against you. You have the right to talk to an attorney and have him or her with you at now or at any time during questioning. Cannot afford an attorney, one will be appointed to represent you. If at any time you wish to stop talking or have an attorney present, all questioning will be stopped at your request. Do you understand these rights? With these rights in mind, are you willing to talk to me? >> Yes, sir. >> All right. Okay. At what time was the last time you saw your child? >> We went to sleep maybe. I mean, we we usually don't take late evening naps, but I I just hurt my neck the other day when I was putting up the cameras and fell off the ladder, so my neck's been hurting and I she was in the bed with us and we just we were watching a movie and we just fell asleep. Um probably we fell asleep at least like like maybe right at 6:00. >> Okay. Okay. And the child I'm sorry I forget the child's name. >> Na. >> Na. Na was with you in the bed when you fell asleep around 6:00. >> She was literally laying on his chest. She That's why I don't understand. She's never came out of the door like this. She's never like >> freaking know this is just a mess. I literally just got this pool yesterday and I was going to take it down cuz when I went to put it up, the top of it doesn't blow up. But I still let her play it like earlier today before it started raining just to get some energy out and stuff cuz we don't really come outside like that because the boats are so bad. >> All right. So the pool the pool was filled all day. You didn't fill it today at all or it was filled yesterday? >> No, it it was filled yesterday and then I brought her but I didn't drain it out yesterday cuz I was going to bring her back out to play in it today. But when I realized the thing wasn't the top part wasn't blowing up. It doesn't hold sustainably like it would if it would blow up. So I still let her play in it a little bit today and then we just brought her in the house. She played in it for maybe like two hours early, but I but I sat outside and I I would never let her do that unsupervised cuz I I've seen things that can happen like that. And that's why I just don't understand because she's never came out of the house like this without like the one time that she ran over to the neighbor's house, I had view of her and >> Yeah. You were mentioning that happened July 4th, right? >> Yes. >> Okay. >> Oh, so now it's the turn of some mysterious thief to be blamed. Yes. He's the one who broke the door and nearly the child. >> When you woke up, who woke up first? Was it him or you? I noticed that she wasn't in bed. >> He did. And I I literally woke up as he was walking outside to talk to you and or whichever one of you was up here and I just ran out the door when I saw >> Okay. Yeah. And And you woke up at what time? >> Uh it was like 6:30. >> Okay. when I or about 6:30 when I saw that when I woke up and saw that you guys were or that whichever one of you were here was out here and he was walking out to the end of the driveway. This never happens. Okay. >> Never happens. >> And are you the biological mother of Naa? >> Yes. >> Okay. Who is he to Naa? >> Uh he's he's my boyfriend. But Na's dad isn't. >> Yeah. No. >> Okay. He's your boyfriend. Is he is he to you like a caretaker to Naa as well? What do you mean? Isn't like >> like is he a caretaker? Like if you were if you leave the house, does he watch her or >> No, no, no. I don't I didn't I I don't leave my daughter with anybody. No. >> Okay. Has she ever been You say that pool's recent recently new? >> Yeah. I I literally just bought it yesterday. >> Okay. And you say she has she has not done this besides on July 4th. >> Yeah. She's never done this besides on July 4th when it happened on July 4th. I have a carpet right at my front door and it's not easy. It's not easy to pull the door open. >> Okay. >> But but somebody had I don't even know but somebody had tried to break into the house and there like the door jam is broken and that's the only reason I'm thinking that she might have been able to open the door. >> But I like this is nothing. >> Is is that door is that door locked ever? >> Yeah, I I keep it locked but I I'll just have to get the little handle thing that goes on the door knob and then I'm still going to get a chain to go on the top of it to lock it from the inside cuz this like I said this is this does not happen. I don't know if it's just because we got the pool and she wanted to come outside and play in it, but that's not like this has never happened. I don't let her get out of my view like that. >> Yeah. All right. And is the door like traditional like twist knob to open it or is it just like a simple pull? >> Oh, you going to twist it to open it, but I usually lock the screen door too cuz she doesn't know how to lock it and >> so she's she's the door handle's low. She's within arms reach of the door handle. Have you ever seen her reaching for it beforehand? >> No, she doesn't. She doesn't do that. She doesn't open the doors in my house. A child just starting out in life and not yet able to tell what's dangerous was placed in a life or death situation. All because the adults fell asleep. And those were two haunting stories of negligence and its unforeseeable consequences. From the car doors swinging open in Virginia to the careless afternoon nap in Florida, one thing remains clear. Adult irresponsibility can put innocent children in extreme danger. Remember, everything we do reflects back to the next generation. We can't change the past, but we can change how we act today.
