Try to grab $8 >> jewelry. $8 jewelry. When adults lose their responsibility, police often become the last safeguard to prevent matters from reaching a point where the impact can no longer be undone. >> You didn't kill her. >> You ran me off the road. >> You are in a small road. >> Is the explanation of a narrow road enough to address the growing concerns now surrounding this mother? On October 12th, Carol County police became involved in a traffic related situation that raised safety concerns. During the interaction, officers noted issues with a vehicle and conflicting explanations which gradually increased tension. The child was completely innocent, yet placed in a vulnerable position due to an adult's moment of poor judgment. >> Hi, ma'am. Where are you coming from? >> I went to Stockton and picked up a truck. Oh, and she's just coming back for tumbling. >> Who's coming back? >> My daughter. >> Your daughter. Do you have your license proof of insurance? Hi. How are you doing? Good. How was tumbling? It was good. Also, can you turn off the car for me? All right. It was good. What What's your favorite thing to do at tumbling? Do you do jump on the trampolines? >> What' you do today? >> You don't have trampolines? Uh 22. All right. Perfect. Your insurance is good on here. You said you're coming back from Stockton. >> Yeah. No, we went to M Milligville. >> Milligville, but you just told me you're coming back from Stockton. >> Well, I went to Stockton. I went to Milligville. >> Just getting your >> I have a tire in the back of my truck. >> Like you got a flat tire or >> No, on the side by side. >> Oh, okay. So, you have a tire in here for the side by side. >> All right. If I if it's not updated when I run it, I'll come back and ask you for it. Okay. >> I've updated it. >> You updated it? >> Yeah. >> Okay. I'll be right back with you. >> Oh, you live on out on Okay. All right. I'll be right back with you guys. I wish I could I wish I could I wish I could pull up the video. I was going on Town Line and you know that that hill right here where it drops and like you're in between those trees. Dude, she was in my lane like right here. I had to come off the road. She I can smell it. >> You smell it? >> I can smell Did you ask her about it? >> She has a kid. I have not asked. She has a kid with her. I asked her where she's coming from. She said stock. I'm like, "Okay." And she said she picked up her kid from Tumbling. And I'm like, "Okay." So, and then she brought up how she has a tire in the car. And then she is saying that she's coming from Milligville. Dude, her story is like mixing up. She smell if you She has a kid in the car. So, like this is like I was like, "What the like?" I almost went off the road. >> Okay. Um >> I did [clears throat] go off the road. I drove in the grass. >> I mean, yeah. Um what? Uh Okay. So, what do we got to do now? What are you going to Uh, I already had her shut off the car, have her step out, run into the field. >> So, I would >> Have you had anything to drink tonight? >> Yeah, I would start with that. So, I'm getting an odor of alcohol coming for you. Have you had anything to drink? See what she said. And if she denies it, >> speech is bad, too. >> Is it? Okay. So, if uh and then either way, just be like, "Okay, well, uh, I just want to, uh, do a couple of tests to ensure that you're, uh, good drive. Uh, would you mind stepping out of the car for me?" And then back your car up a little bit. Give yourself some room. Like, back up to like here. You want the room cuz you're not going to when you have her on dash cam. Well, it's not as big a deal. >> So, you want me to back up now? >> Yeah, back it up just so you have room to do like >> When asked to participate in a basic driving evaluation, [music] the mother repeatedly declined and asked that the matter not continue in front of her child. Unfortunately, heightened emotions did not ease the situation and instead added complexity. In moments like these, calm and cooperation can be the safest path for a young child. >> All right. Um, ma'am, can can I ask you, have you had any alcoholic beverages tonight? >> No. >> No, you haven't? >> No. >> Can I put you through a few tests to make sure you're good to drive? >> No, I'm not doing that. >> You're not doing that? >> No. What are you doing? >> Well, you ma'am, >> the road is very narrow. >> No. No, it's not. Ma'am, I I went in the grass to to >> Are you serious? >> Yeah. >> Can I come, Mommy? >> No, baby. Stay there. >> Hold on. Stay there. And plus, I see you got listing and stuff in there. So, you're trying to like cover it up. >> I'm just going to take you through a couple tests to make sure you're okay to drive, especially for for your daughter. I want everyone getting home safe. Okay. >> This is awesome. >> All right. Come over here, man. >> I'm not. I'm not. >> Can you please come over here? >> No, I'm not. >> So, here's the deal. He >> I know what I know. You guys can do whatever you want. >> We've got He said he's got an order of alcoholic beverage. So, at this point, the tests are for your benefit. If you don't believe that you're impaired, this is your chance to prove that to us that you're not impaired. >> You know what you're doing and know >> because otherwise he's just gonna have to place you under arrest for driving under the influence of alcohol. >> Okay, that's fine. Call my husband. >> We don't need to call your husband right now. This is you. He has you drive. >> Well, I'm not having her sit here with you guys. >> Okay, we'll cross that bridge when we get there. We got to make sure you're good to drive. >> I'm not doing this. No. I gotta call my husband. >> Why? >> I'm not doing this. >> Why? Because I'm not going to do this and put myself at risk for you guys. >> Risk for us. For what? >> I'm not doing it. I want to call my husband. >> Okay. Well, >> no. No. Ma'am, husband. No. No. >> I'm calling my husband. >> No. Ma'am, please step this way. Ma'am, >> don't do this to my job. >> Don't ma'am. I want I'm going to place you under arrest. Don't follow me. >> I'm calling my husband. >> I want to run you through your daughter. >> I'm not doing it. I'm not doing it. I will call my husband. >> Ma'am, no. Not at this time. >> Ma'am, I don't want to do that in front of your front door. Do not do it in front of me. Ma'am, do not if you reach in your car, I will place you under arrest. >> Call me then. Grab in my phone. Get >> No. I want to run you through test first then you can call. >> No, you're not. You're not. Yes. >> And that's it. You're under arrest. You want to face your door? >> Yes. No. Yes. Step back. Step back. Don't do this to my daughter. Her mother justing died last year. >> I am sorry to hear that. >> Don't start. >> Do what we have to do. [clears throat] >> Oh, I know how this is. I've been married to two cops. >> Stop. >> Stop. You're not doing this to my daughter. >> Please. Turn around. >> You are not. >> Turn around. It's okay, sweetie. >> It's okay. Turn around. >> No, it's not okay. >> Turn around. She'sing her mothering died last year. >> Turn behind. Place your hands behind your back. >> No, I'm not. >> Yes, you are. I'm not. You I've given you chances. >> Hold on, baby. Hold on, baby. Really? Are you serious? >> We tried to work with you. We tried to work with you. >> Stop. Are you kidding me? Where am I running? >> Hold on, sweetie. Don't get on the road. >> Hold on. It's okay. We just got to do some paperwork. >> That's all it is. >> Why is it so tight? >> Loosen up. >> The left hand. Loosen up. >> Your left hand is too tight. I could fit a finger in there. Like if I could fit a finger. >> Get it off. >> This way. >> Good. This way. This way. This way. >> Serious. You're going to do this, my daughter? >> Ma'am, I didn't want to do this. I gave you chances, ma'am. I gave you chances. I I I really >> What chance did you give? >> I was working with you. I was like, "Ma'am, please stop this. I want you to get home with your daughter. >> Stop for a minute. Can you stop for a minute and be aing dad?" >> No. >> Can you stop? >> I cannot. >> Can you stop? >> I gave you enough chances. Come on. >> Listen to me. Mying daughter just lost her mother a year and a half ago and she died of cancer in the house. Thating kid is the only thing I know. >> I understand. >> She is going toing freak out. >> I understand. >> You don't understand. You're not You're not >> I'm listening to you and I'm I'm sitting here as a as a loosen this up. >> I I haven't finger. Let me talk to her. Let me talk to her. >> I can't let you do that. >> Let me talk to her. >> I'm just I'm going to search you. Make sure you have nothing on you. >> I got a knife. >> That's okay. >> Yep. I got another one in my breast and you're not touching that. >> You have a knife in your bra? >> Yes, I do. Get off of me and let me talk to my daughter. Making sure you No. Oh no, they're nice. >> Let me talk to my daughter. Please let me talk to mying daughter. You know how traumatizing this is for her. >> Oh, I I know. I trust me. I know. And I don't. >> Yes, I did. Yes, I did. >> You lost her mother. >> I understand that. You've told me that. >> You're a [ __ ] punk. >> How am I a punk? >> You're young. >> I Okay. And that that makes me a punk. And you said you have another knife on you. >> Yeah. Right in my bra. I can't get it because my hands are coughed. Come on. Let me talk to her. Let me talk to her. Let me talk to her. >> Ma'am, get in. >> Let me talk to my daughter, please. >> I I'll I'll have her come back here. >> No. >> Yes. >> No. No. No. >> Ma'am, I can't let you talk to her because I've given you opportunities. >> You didn't let me talk to her. >> Have you had stuff to drink tonight? Yes or no? >> Yes. Not a lot. >> Not a lot. >> No. >> How much is not a lot? >> Like two drinks? >> You had two drinks? >> Yes. Why? She was at Tumbling. >> Okay. In Tumbling, where at? >> In Milville. >> You told me she had tumbling in Stockton. No, she I went to Stockton. I went to Milligville. I went to Chadwick today. I've been a lot of places. >> So, you don't know where her tumbling's at? >> It's in Milligville. >> It's in Milligville. But earlier, you were telling me it was straight. >> Yeah, because I'm nervous. Can you please just let me talk to my daughter? >> Get in the car. >> Get in the car. >> Serious. >> Let me talk to my daughter first. Please. >> Can I talk to my daughter? >> Sit in the car. >> Get in the car. >> My daughtering lost her mind. >> I understand. But you you you could have killed her back there. Can I please talk to her >> later? Please sit in the car. >> I need to call my husband. >> Okay. >> There'll be plenty of time to do that at the gym. >> The situation became more serious when officers noticed an unexpected item on the mother. Because of the sensitive circumstances, [music] they proceeded carefully, emphasizing respect, caution, and overall safety. >> She said she had a knife in her bra. What am I supposed to do with that? She said, >> "Get up there and get a female back there right away. Should I get her? >> I'm sorry. I I didn't want to do that. >> It's okay. >> Will you come to me? >> Dude, she switched the Listerine while we were up here. Oh, yeah. I could smell the lististering for sure. 100%. Um, so you got I mean, so now you're going to get her back to the jail. You're going to um you can offer to do fields again. I mean, it's only it's only to benefit of your case at this point. You can do them in the sally port if you want, but if you just want to skip past that, that's fine, too. You're gonna uh do your sworn reporting a motorist and all that. You're going to ask for breath sample like going to refuse it and then do your uh DUI one and do the um the one you wrote the other the that other guy. That's the same >> uh left to center that one. Yeah. So you're going to do that one again. >> She's fidgeting around. She had I got one night off knife off for her and she told me that she has a knife in her what what what are you doing? Why did you get unbuckled? >> Because I need to talk to her. >> She is [ __ ] traumatized. >> Look, we're trying to get that figured out right now. We're trying to get somebody to come here. We're probably going to just bring her with to the sheriff's office. >> No, you're not. No, you're not. Her grandmother died two years ago. >> You could have killed her tonight. I've told you that. >> You ran me off the road. >> You are in a small road. >> That's not a small road. >> Really? >> That's not a small road, ma'am. I will buck. You want to be buckled back in. I'm not letting you talk >> to talk to my daughter, my husband, and my daughter. >> Okay. You could talk to them at the jail. >> No, I'm not going to jail. Can you stop? >> Can you please just give me my phone? >> We were We were trying to call to pick up. >> The mother was charged with child endangerment, [music] reckless driving, driving under the influence, and obstructing justice. Under Maryland law, she could face penalties of up to 10 years in prison and or [music] fines totaling up to $5,500. This story serves as a reminder that every adult choice carries weight. Compassion paired with awareness of the law, plays a vital role in protecting children and [music] safeguarding families. You won't believe what police discovered inside the vehicle where a child had been left unattended >> right now. I am going to be placing you in custody. >> On October 20th, 2024, Palm Bay police were dispatched to a parking lot after receiving a report from emergency responders about a child left alone inside a vehicle. Initial details indicated the engine was off, the windows were closed, and the child had been inside for roughly 10 minutes. At the scene, the father explained that the doors had closed unintentionally due to the child's movement. However, what officers observed inside the vehicle suggested the situation was more complicated than it first appeared. >> He's inside. >> Oh, yeah. This is sweating bad. >> All right, we'll get it open. >> What is she doing in the front? >> Nothing. I just came from the store. uh to her so I go sit in there too so I could do something before I left I live vlog and a half earlier. >> Did she ride in the front here? >> No, I got the car seat in the back. >> Okay. >> It's okay, mama. One second. >> And how long has she been here? >> Less than 10 minutes. Like I said, I came out this door. I put her there for a second. She had the key to the car. >> She's she's sweating really bad. >> But she started crying cuz I wanted to go inside to get the phone. My my phone is >> so I had to go inside. So, she started crying when she didn't saw me. >> How How did she get into the front seat? >> I pulled her in the front seat >> when >> I came out the store cuz I just bought something. I put her there so I could go in the other side so I could do something on my phone. She [ __ ] locked the door on me before I got to the other side. >> Was the car running? >> No. >> And the key fob does not work. >> She had the key. That's why I got locked out before. She locked the car before I could get on the other side. should be okay. Where's the keys? >> You got to look on the car. [crying] >> What's up with the shake, man? >> She good? You okay? >> I don't know what to tell you. >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> Can you check her out? >> Yeah. She looks now on there when I went in. >> She's fine. I'll tell you she been less than 10 minutes. >> No, no. I I hear you. But she there's a all over the car and she was sitting on it. Okay. And I just took a piece off of her just now. >> So, where is your ID? >> I don't have it. >> You don't have an ID? >> No, I don't. >> Who is uh who is her parent or >> I'm the dad? >> Huh? >> I'm the dad. >> You are the dad. Who else can take care of her? >> Mom just went to work and grandpa's out. Do you mind if I get the pacifier? 89. >> All right. So, what I'm going to ask you to do is just step to the back of the car for me. >> Okay. >> She's going to be upset. She's She's fine. She's It wasn't even It was colder than that. We got her. >> Yeah. And I appreciate is basically for me to just determine that she's okay, but also to uh stall to wait for, you know, her partner to get here. >> As far as substance, there's nothing we can check that would help with that. So his uh phone is he parked it here. She was in the front seat with the seat belt on. Uh he said that he moved her to the front seat so he could go inside and do something on his phone. >> I didn't say that. I said I put her in the front seat when I came out. >> When you came out. But then you went back inside. >> Yeah. To get the phone so I could call. >> Okay. So he went he left her in the car that was not running with the keys in. He went back inside to get his phone. He came back out and obviously the the car was locked. >> No, that's not what happened. >> Okay, tell me what happened. >> Her to the car cuz I'm about to take off and you see her in there for a second so I could do something. But before I could get to this side, she locked the car on me cuz she had the keys on her hand playing with them. So I went inside and asked for the phone to call right away. >> What is up with the in the car? >> What can I say? Man, that's my stuff. >> You what? >> That's mine. What can I say? Well, like I said, I mean, we get here. Yes, you called. She's in the front seat. Okay. You weren't driving, which is good, but she's in the front seat with the seat belt buckled. The car is not running and it gets locked. Okay. By her or something or the car does it itself when I open and the door gets opened, there's sitting on the seat that she is sitting in. That is a huge issue. >> Yeah, I know. She got to it while I was while to get this. >> Who knows if she digested? >> I don't think so. ingested any of that. >> That right there in key is when you say I don't think so. That's the hard part. That's when it becomes dangerous. You know what I mean? Cuz what do people do with sometimes what they lace it with? Fentanyl meth. So you never know what you're getting unless are you are you buying from an actual distributor or you buying from a person. I'm not I'm not asking that so you can get charged. I'm just asking a question. You buying from just a friend or you buying from a distributor? >> Friend. >> Okay. So the friend could be lacing on something not on >> I understand what you guys going to with this but I'm pretty sure she's good. I called right away. I didn't have no time. >> We appreciate you calling. I'm just saying how important it is to to go. >> The presence of several safety concerns led officers to reassess the child's well-being and carefully determine the most appropriate next steps. >> She's good and no high, none of that stuff. And it's barely anywhere on the car. >> But there but there's in the car. >> Yeah, I know. >> Do you understand what I'm saying? You're not free to leave. >> You're not free to leave. >> 268. Can you show one nail to change? >> So, what were you doing that was so important to leave your daughter in? >> I didn't leave my daughter in the car. You keep saying I leave my daughter in the car. I didn't leave my daughter in the car. I came I put her on that seat coming around the car before and she locked the door on me before I could reach the door. >> I I I get it. >> Why did you put her in the seat bel? >> So, it don't matter. I was staying there. I was going to stay in there for a second. >> Well, it did it does it does matter. Okay. So, you put her in the car, you shut the door, you walked around, and by the time you got to the other side, the car was already locked. >> Yeah, she locked. >> What's up with the the in the car? >> That's mine. >> Huh? >> All right. >> How's yours? I I understand. I should have been asking what's up with it. You're leaving a kid in the car over. >> Yeah, she was. And it seems like, you know, >> and he didn't tell me any of this. When the girl When the girl got out, she had on her back. saying I leave my car >> cuz you know hit that age put everything >> who know who knows if she could have done it >> she felt wrong >> in the front seat >> so he's definitely crap >> so you were just running real bad >> no I she doesn't me so I ran water right away to the gas station to get the phone so now he's being a little bit more honest he said that the kid was seated in there in that seat with the seat belt on because he was in a rush so he put her instead of putting her in the car seat just popped her there seat belt Actually, he could drive here from his house cuz he doesn't live that far away. >> I figured that was the case. Yeah. >> Where is the container? >> My container. That's what I have. >> Well, what? Okay. Right now, I am going to be placing you in custody for child neglect. I mean, there's a bunch of other things. Not only being in possession of that's not in a container, which has to be, also having a firearm, a loaded firearm right next to the car seat of your child. That's like I that's just a recipe for absolute disaster, man. And I think that goes without saying. So, if you can pull up your wife's number, I'll give her a call to come and get her daughter. Okay. >> Can I on the phone? >> No. Why not? >> You can you can swipe right here cuz you're in custody right now and it's playing by my rules. first number right there. >> Remain to hold her, but go ahead and face the car up everyone else in your pocket. >> A family member was asked to come to the scene. The concern visible on their face served as a quiet reminder that [music] at times support and care come from those watching closely from the outside. >> Hello, sir. Uh, Junior, we have him at the gas station. He's uh going to jail. >> Junior, >> what happened to Junior? >> So, I'm I don't I can't get into all the details right now, but >> what what about the baby? >> Exactly. that. Yeah, that's why I'm here. Um, are you able to get in my car and I take you over there to drive the car home? And the baby the baby's okay. Um, there was just an incident that happened. >> An accident? >> No, no, no. The baby's okay. Everybody's okay. An accident on his part. Yeah. But, um, yeah, if you want to hop in, I can give you a ride to the gas station and just drive the car. And the baby >> usually going to jail. >> Yeah, he's going to jail for child. >> Oh, sir. My car. Um, he's getting arrested. You'll be able to talk to him if you want to later on. But let's go ahead and take the the grandar back to the house. >> No, the primary house is over there. But hopefully me. >> All right. I >> The father was charged with child and possession of and faced 6 months of probation along with $542 in court fees. Fortunately, the young girl was not physically affected. Still, the image of a small child placed amid clear risks gives anyone pause. Parenthood is not just a right, but a humanitarian responsibility that cannot be taken lightly. What began as a simple [music] exchange of greetings with a neighbor gradually turned the home into a stifling environment marked by tension, distress, [music] and lingering unease. >> 911 listening. What is your emergency? >> Um, I need the police. I'm not injured, but I don't feel safe at my house right now. >> Okay, ma'am. Is anyone else home with you right now? >> Yes, my husband and child are here. I'm very worried about the situation at home. >> Is there any danger right now? Is anyone being threatened or harmed? >> Not right now, but the situation in the family is very tense and I'm worried about my child. >> Where is your address? >> I am located at 214 Maple Street, Riverside Neighborhood, Springfield, Illinois. >> Okay. Please hold on to the phone and stay in a safe place. We will [music] send a team to check. Please stay safe. >> On June 11th, 2025, a mother in Springfield, Illinois called 911 after no longer feeling secure in her own home. She reported that her husband's behavior had become unpredictable, that he was neglecting his well-being, frequently raising his voice, and making unfounded claims that she was involved in an inappropriate connection with a neighbor. As these suspicions intensified, [music] the children in the household became caught in the emotional strain of an escalating family dispute. cial area. >> Hi, buddy. >> It's a boy. >> What's that? >> What's a boy? >> Where's the boy? >> What's the boy? >> I don't know. Hi. >> He must love the police, huh? >> He loves the police and firemen. Firemen are his favorite, but >> Hi. Well, firemen are better. >> It's a safer job. What's going on? >> Hi. Um, my husband's been having a manic episode for about 2 weeks now, and he's not taking his meds. And I came home and he stole my jewelry box. Like my jewelry box is gone like all of my sentimental stuff. >> And he kind of does he have a habit by chance? >> He has in the past, but the last 3 years he's been totally clean. I think he's doing it in spite. He's >> accusing me of sleeping with the neighbor, which we've only lived here for about 8 months. I It's the guy that he talks to over there all the time. >> Okay. >> And I I've literally only just said hello to this man. >> What? >> And he goes over there and talks to him all the time. He was asking me today if I was having an affair with him and I was like when he said his name I was like I don't even know who you're talking about. >> Mhm. >> Um and then I remember like I remembered and I was like you're being so rude like I've never done anything and he's like you need to pack your stuff and leave and I've been working all day. >> So you think he took your stuff out of spite rather than maybe going to pawn it for maybe >> street? He does go to pawn things. So um I just don't know what else to do. Like I mean that's not his stuff. You guys been married? >> 7 years. >> Okay. So, >> he's never stolen anything from me before. >> The way the law sees it, cuz it's mutual. It's marriage. It's mutual property. >> I understand that. Well, here what we can do. >> I don't know how else to get him to stop. Like, he is on like this manic escapade. >> What's he doing? >> He's just like not being himself or >> Yeah, he's screaming. He's got delusions. He hears voices. He's not taking his medications like he should. Um, >> does he come home every night >> for like 2 or 3 hours and he sleeps and then he leaves? >> Okay. >> So, there's nothing you guys can do. Like, I can't press any charges against >> We can't do anything. We can't do anything again for as far as the jewelry goes. Here, I'm going to give you the best advice I possibly can. Okay. As far as the jewelry goes, because it's mutual property, marriage property. Can't do anything about that. But the next time he comes home, if you think that he's having some sort of a manic episode, >> they don't take him because he's not being threatening or >> And that's what I was going to ask next. If he's not being threatened or they're going to come, they're going to talk to him >> and then Yeah. >> Get stuff that's not his, it's stuff that I had before I was married. >> I know. I know. In response, officers advised the wife to remain mindful of two-party consent laws if she chose to document interactions and to [music] consider professional support if necessary with the primary goal of maintaining safety for everyone involved. >> Um, here if it was a neighbor, if it was a cousin or something like that, then then we'd be able to do something about that because but because it is marital property, we can't do anything about that. But we might be able [clears throat] to help him with his manic situation, but we have to know where he's at. We have a car description right now. >> You're worried about his mental status because he's not been taking his medication. You said he's not threatening. He's violent, which is good. And >> he yells and he screams and stuff, but he's not like physically tried to do anything. We're saying that he's >> It's more of a psychological thing. >> So, >> when he comes home and if he's acting like that, your best bet is to call us and we'll we'll come over here. We'll talk to him. >> Yeah. But he won't. But so you've had the medical fault on him before. >> This has happened so many times and they never take him unless he agrees or [snorts] if he does something unsafe. >> Yes. >> It's just a nightmare. >> As far as the relationship goes, is it is it something you guys are going to work on or is it something? Like this time his doctor prescribed him a steroid like 2 weeks ago because he was having back problems and we didn't know that that would cause someone to have psychosis or mania that has this disorder. and it we didn't realize until after he had done taking the six days. >> Well, there's also what's called an involuntarily comm involuntary committal that you can do as as a spouse because you know him better than I don't I don't know who this guy is. Okay. You can also petition the hospital to take him involuntarily. Okay. But that's going to be based off of that's only if he says he's threatening or something, right? I mean before and they won't just take him. >> Even involuntary they have they won't take him here. >> I don't know where the boy is. the car. >> I wish I had a better answer for you. But if if the medics aren't going to take him, I'm guessing he knows what to say to them. >> Yes, he manipulates her. >> Okay, but here, if he's having a manic episode >> and you record him having a manic episode, something that he can't explain cuz he's just banging his head against the wall or doing whatever, then when the medics show up, you show that to them. Okay? >> I have to tell you, this is a two-party consent state. So, in order to record him, you have to say, "I'm going to record you." Okay? Just to cover your own rear end. Do you work right now or are you full-time mom? >> No, I work all the time. I'm the bread winner. >> Okay. >> I can't believe there's nothing that can be done that he stole something from me. >> It's marital property. We deal with it all the time. >> Even though it's like stuff that I had before we were married. >> Still the same thing. Once you guys are joined in marriage, then it's considered marital property. Hopefully, he's just holding it just for whatever reason. >> I pull a lot of it cuz he doesn't have any money right now. Oh god. Most people that do that, I'd be more concerned about maybe them dipping more towards street again. >> Yeah. >> When he was using, what was he using? >> Okay. My biggest concern >> I mean, if they if you guys have a lookout for his cars, are you even going to pull him over or anything? Like what what do you think? >> Well, here he took property. >> He shouldn't be driving. So, >> he took he took property that's marital property. So, I can't do anything for the for the theft. Okay. He didn't you or anything like that. So, it's not a domestic battery. So, we really don't have I mean, we could do like a we could stop him and check his mental status, but we got to find him first. And um I do have his plate. He drives a 4Runner, right? Okay. We can look around, see if the if our license plate uh readers anywhere. Maybe I'll check. Does he drink? >> Um does he he hasn't drank in about 2 years, but that he used to drink a lot. >> Did he frequent any bars around here? >> Um we used to live in Lombard and he would go down there. I don't know. I don't know what he's been doing the last couple days. >> Okay. I mean, I could check the bars in town. Maybe he's up at Caps or Mahonies or something. Maybe he's in there. >> He never went to Caps or Mahoney. I don't even know. He's I don't >> Here. What time does he usually get home? >> All hours. He doesn't have a job. >> He works as a handyman, but he's like been doing his own thing, but he hasn't been He's just like not here ever. >> When he comes home next and if he's having an episode, like I said, >> unfortunately, you got to tell him you got to record. You got to tell him I'm going to record you, okay? If he does something that he can't explain away to the medics, the medics might take him. Okay. But other than that, there's really nothing the police can do about it. Okay. He hasn't broken any laws. And I don't want it to go that far either. So you say he's never been he's never been >> Well, he has been violent and he's choked me and stuff, but like recently that hasn't happened. >> Well, if that happens again, then it's something that's enforcable. It's actionable. >> I know. But he knows that he >> he knows it. It seems like he knows that and he seems like he knows what to say to the medics. I mean, if you were in fear of your of your safety, I would say go get an order of protection, something like that. But, I mean, >> I tried to do that the other day, but they won't give me anything because there hasn't been any >> because there's no history. >> There's no threatening thing the last few days. >> You have to have a history yet because they have to be able to, you know, justify it. What I'll do, there's one pawn shop in town. There's actually two pawn shops in town. I'll go there now and I'll see if anybody with his name. I have his name on the computer. It's something hall. Christopher Hall. >> Christopher Hall. That's my whole entire jewelry box. Okay, I'll see if Christopher Hall charging block. >> Okay, so it looks like he went to Boulevard Coin >> and he went to Sterling and Knight. Okay, I'm gonna >> Well, I'm going to treat it because you had all this stuff before you were married. So, it's yours. >> Yes. >> Okay, that's big because if it was acquired during marriage, it's marital property. >> The jewelry box you gave me, but >> Okay. Well, they have four rings at >> um How many rings were in there? >> Mama, >> is this him right here? >> Yep. That's it. >> Okay, perfect. >> I had I don't know, probably eight or nine rings. >> Police spoke with a husband and requested the return of the wife's personal [music] belongings. Several items were unaccounted for, including possessions with deep personal meaning, reflecting losses that went beyond simple property. >> I'm going to grab the evidence real quick. >> Okay, hold on. >> Take a break. >> Talk to me first. All right. >> All right. So, I already went to Boulevard Coin >> or uh Boulevard and uh Sterling Knight. >> Did you talk to St. Charles police? They're picking up Mike Py. No, >> she's been drugging my child with Janexa. It's an allergy medication. >> Let's let's let's talk about the first thing first. >> Okay. >> Okay. Um where's Do you still have her jewelry box? >> Yeah, it's in my car. >> It's in your car. What about the jewelry? >> It's in there. >> Okay. Minus the rings that you pawned. >> Exactly. Okay. >> Can you do me a favor and go grab it? And so she Besides the four rings, what else did you pawn? >> Nothing. >> Just the four rings. >> Yep. >> How much uh how much did they did they give you if you don't mind me asking? >> Uh 28. >> I >> Okay. So, there's an issue with that because we don't know. I still got to look into the law. >> Okay. >> As far as whether it's marital property or not. >> My earrings are missing. >> They're all in there. >> Okay. >> No, they're not at all. >> Yes, they are. They're all in there. >> All right. All right. >> So, I have to do a little bit of digging in the law to see what's considered marital property or not. Right. >> She says that those rings and the I don't know whatever is missing. >> Are so it's split down 50/50. We're getting a divorce. She's been cheating on me the whole time we've been together. She cheated with the neighbor. She's an adulteress and I I want her gone. >> Okay. Well, this is her home. I can't make her do that. Okay. >> Okay. My biggest concern is for the well-being of both parties, right? >> Okay. She said that that you were recently given some new medications, >> man. >> No, absolutely not. >> Last time you had like a 6 in. >> Well, that's cuz it was my birthday or not my anniversary that night. >> So, are you taking your meds? Yes. >> There's a lot of stuff missing. >> There's nothing else missing. >> Okay. Are you taking your medication? >> Yes. >> Okay. She's saying that she has no idea what you're talking about. Drugging the child to go to sleep or whatever. >> I can show it to you. Can I show it to you? >> What? What? What are you going to Wait, before you go in, what are you going to show? >> I'm going to show you the bottle of Janexa. It's called allergy medications not to put children to sleep. I watched him get sick one time in front of me, throw up. >> She's abusing our child. She smacked him. She's done a lot of horrible things just like my mother did. >> So, when I asked her earlier if you guys were trying to make it work or or make the relationship work, she she doesn't sound as concerned about dissolving the marriage as you are right now. So, you're saying that you guys are in the midst of a divorce? >> She needs to go. I'm tired. I can't make her go. and she's got a child. >> We got to be amicable in some way. >> I understand that. I know it's domestic. >> So, I will document what you're saying about that. She's saying she has no idea. There's no need to show me what the bottle is. She's saying she has no no idea what you're talking about. Okay. My concern first and foremost is the well-being of everybody here, specifically the child. Okay. >> As for the jewelry, okay, if I check the law and the law says that you can't sell stuff that didn't belong prior to the marriage, >> I get a theft charge. You probably get a theft. No worries. Okay, >> I'll take that. >> Yeah, my grandmother's ring is gone. >> Okay. Well, here. Where's Where's the grandma's ring? >> Cut the bunch up. >> Okay. Listen to me. We'll work on getting that back. >> Okay. >> And there's a bunch of earrings and stuff missing. >> Okay. >> Everything's in there except for the four rings. >> They're all gone. >> Okay. Well, I don't know. I can't say if they were. Okay. I'll document that you're saying earrings are gone, but I know there's four rings at the pawn shop right now. >> No worry, mama. >> Okay. Yeah. After we jump through a bunch of hoops. I know. >> Okay. Um, so don't touch your stuff anymore. If you guys are going to get a divorce, get a divorce. But let's let's be civil. >> Okay. >> Okay. >> Got it. >> You don't appear to be acting out of sorts to me being somebody that's just met you 5 seconds ago. Okay. Are we going to be okay leaving here or is there going to be a problem with any kind of >> Okay. Don't touch your stuff anymore. My advice to you is secure that somewhere else where he can't get it. Okay. >> You had upstairs. Is that what you said? >> Yeah. >> Yep. different areas of the house for the rest of the day at least. >> Yep. >> 100%. >> All right. I'm going to write everything up. Thanks. I appreciate you talking to me. >> Uh I'll be in touch with as far as what's going to happen with the rings and if it does come down to criminal charges in lie of getting a warrant for you, I'll just tell you to come in. >> Yeah. >> After recording the details, officers left the residence, but [music] shared safety guidance intended to help protect both the mother and the child. >> If he takes my son, what do I do? >> Trying to make your own case. >> Okay. You guys are married. You guys, you guys co-arent. Right in the head, so be tight. I'm >> scared. >> This incident is going to be reported. Okay. >> So, this incident might be enough to get some sort of an order restraining order. I guess what he was drinking might have been. >> Okay. Especially if that's one of your concerns. >> Like, I just have to take this to the courthouse and be like, "This is the case number or something." >> That's the case number on the back of there. Obviously, I got to do the report. >> Okay. So, and I'll put in there that you you know he believes he's off his meds and the new medication is making him a little loopy, but I mean he seems okay, but he could just be a good actor. >> So, most people that are seriously mental, they can't hide it. >> He um you spent a half an hour with him. >> Not long afterward, they were required to return following reports that conditions remained unstable [music] with a child still present in the street. I'll just tell you exactly. So, we just got a call now that said you grabbed her or something. >> No, she just tried to make money on him. I have no idea what is wrong. Why does she keep calling? >> That's just what she literally just told us. So, I haven't even been back over there yet, but I saw you on the skateboard, right? So, obviously you don't want us to just believe whatever she says, right? You want to talk to you? >> Um, so what what so what happened or did anything happen? She's been drugging my kid with Genexa, dude. It's like a allergy medicine to make him go to sleep. I I watch him get sick and puke and she smacks him like my mom. I just I can't be around her. She triggers me and makes me like bipolar. >> Well, what happened? But like what happened just now? Like cuz we just I mean we just >> went in my car and started like trying to steal money out of my car. I was like what are you doing? >> Okay. >> Yeah. I'm like you need to get out of my car. Period. >> Okay. And then what then what happened? >> No, I'm just trying to figure it out, man. I just don't I don't know. I haven't even talked to my money. I took the money out. >> Okay. That's it. >> That's it. >> Okay. Um the other officer's heading there now to talk to her, but I was going to go talk to both of you guys, but I saw you on your skateboard. >> Yeah. >> So I'm obviously I have to get your side. I can't just believe what somebody else has. Um >> 26 no answer the door. >> So they're going to go talk to her and we'll get it all sorted out. >> What happened? >> He So we have dog food, raw dog food, and this is stupid, but it's in the freezer all the time and it needs to be defrosted. And I pulled I opened the freezer and there was no dog food in there, which is like weird. >> Okay. >> And I went he was going outside and I just asked him I wasn't even going to talk to him about anything that happened. And I just simply wanted to know where is the dog food because it's expensive and like you have to go to the store to get it right now if we don't have any. And he's like it's in my car. And I said well why is it in your car? He's like I was trying to defrost it. I'm like an entire bag cuz you only take a couple out at a time. So he was on one he was like on the the driver's side and I walked to the back of the car cuz the back you could see it. It's still open. Oh, it wasn't open now. >> Don't leave your phone. >> It was open. And so I went to look in the back of the car to see if it was in there cuz I wanted to put it back in the freezer and it wasn't in there. And then I opened up the driver or the passenger side to get in there and my I saw like some of my jewelry and stuff sitting on the ground. So I started to pick it up and he's like, "Get out of there. Get out of there." And I opened up the console to see if there was more of my jewelry in there. And he's like, "Get the out of there." And he grabbed my hand and he's like pulling me out of the car. And I was like, "But it's marital assets, right? Like it's my stuff." So like he shouldn't have put his hands on me, right? >> Okay. Okay, we got him stopped down the road there. Are you injured at all? >> My my hand. He like grabbed my hand. >> He grabbed your hand. Okay. All right. Hang out here. All right. I'll be back. >> The second visit marked the moment when legal limits were determined to have been exceeded leading to serious legal implications. >> Oh, that was because uh I made a call to St. Charles that uh she was over at Mike Face's house firefighter retail sleeping with and he's been giving her honey and all that stuff and they've been janaxing them up and then having >> I found the you know the the bottle on the sink when I walked into my bathroom so I know that she gave it to him and uh >> that sucks man. >> Yeah. Oh yeah. Like what? Drugging my child, smacking my child. I mean this is >> I meant I meant just the if the I'm going to say I believe you cuz I have no reason for you to lie to me. Just to Christopher the like if she's cheating you that sucks. the whole time. >> Dude, that sucks. >> You slept with your neighbor >> here? >> Yeah. Across the street from from my house. >> Like right now? This guy there? >> I went to to Oregon to visit my grandma and they slept together. >> All right. What happened at the house? >> She just tried to take money. I just took it out of her hand. That's it. End of story. >> Money? >> Yeah. She tried to grab $8 >> jewelry. >> Just $8. That's all it was. >> She said it was jewelry. >> No, there was no jewelry. There's no more jewelry. I gave her back the box. >> Okay. What about the jewelry that was in the car? >> There is no more jewelry in the box. >> She said there was jewelry in the car. She's lying 100%. Point blank. >> So, you grab something out of her hands? >> Yeah. $8. >> $8? >> Yes. >> Cash out of her hands. >> That's it. >> Okay. >> Yeah. I mean, I just saw him escape one. So, I I haven't been over there yet either. >> No, I know. I talked to her. >> Okay. >> I talked to her. Okay. Here. Um, unfortunately, she has a different story than you. >> She says that she was picking up jewelry and then she reached open up the center council and then you grabbed her hand, but you her hand. Okay. >> Okay. So that's considered domestic battery. >> That is. >> Yep. >> Okay. >> You're under arrest for domestic battery. >> Doesn't necessarily have to cause injury, but it's insulting and provoking. >> All right. Come on up. Walk around this way. I said we'll get you get you some shoes, shirt as soon as we get it. >> The husband was charged [music] with domestic under Illinois law. He could face up to one year in prison and a $2,500 fine. This story is a reminder [music] that children who grow up amid ongoing conflict often carry quiet anxiety with them. Protecting them is not only a legal obligation but a humanitarian responsibility to prevent long-term emotional impact. >> Where did that come from? >> Okay. External pressures do not create anger on their own, but they can blur judgment, and that is when important safety boundaries begin to weaken. On March 12th, 2024, police received a call from a mother reporting that her son was causing significant disruption inside the home. When officers arrived, she appeared overwhelmed and deeply concerned for her own well-being and for her grandchildren. Conditions at the scene suggested a genuine safety concern for everyone in the apartment, particularly the children who must always come first. >> Hey, darling. >> Yeah. Are you Jamal? >> No, I'm not. >> Not. You're the other brother. >> Okay. >> Where's Jamal at? >> Okay. >> Sir, you're the other brother. Yeah. >> Did you observe anything occur? >> I I walked right here last minute, man. >> What do you mean at the last minute? >> Is it Jvidita? Is that how you say it? Okay. My son over there don't came here soon they told my mother I told him get up off this I ain't know who came through the door I said who is that in my living room cuz I keep my door unlocked with my grandkid when they get out from he said me mom I went to call police mom call police call am to my house he tore my table he tore up my carpet cleaner he tore up the whole he hoes right there in my goddamn wall toilet AND I'M TIRED OF Y'ALL NEED TO go get his ass no goddamn I'm tripping. I don't know what the hell he had going on, but I I was just telling you what you got going on. >> All right. So, did you see Did you see him break anything? Talk to her any type of way or anything. >> N I I didn't even I didn't come up there. I didn't even know he could hear all that for the house. >> Oh, I was I was just >> I probably would have been able to stop. >> Well, I'm saying I was just saying if you saw anything and then I just say, you know, that you saw something. >> Does he live here? >> No, he don't live here. He He He could lay his goddamn head cuz he and I don't want to be around him. I love him but I DON'T TRUST KNOCK ME DOWN. HE my knees my ass. I was trying to keep him from grandson cuz he was picking up everything >> here across the street up Shenita house. Y'all need to go get it and take it to damn jail from jail to rehab. He don't need to get which which one is Shenita's house >> right down the be in front of that. >> Yeah, that >> I'm so sick of them with that bull. He never did. I got my back. >> What's your name? >> You want to tell me? Okay. >> What's your brother's name? >> Jamal. >> Jamal. >> I don't want to tell on my brother, man. I know he man, but you know. >> I mean, I'm just saying she's emotional right now. So, I mean, that's you know Jamal's birthday. >> I don't know. That's crazy. I don't know birthday. All I know. Don't mind nobody. >> How old is your mom? >> 27. >> I'm 30. I'm 30. Boy down. >> I'mma put everything in the car. >> Thank you. >> Thank you, sweetheart. So, you just heard crashing out here? >> Yeah. >> I came up through the living room was all back there watching TV me and my grandson while he was on his tablet. I come back up through him cuz he went to screaming holl before he call I'm about to die. Then we start picking up everything, slamming it. >> Okay. >> This. So, he was yelling at you to call an ambulance. >> Call the ambulance in the police. >> Okay. Here you go. What's this good phone number for you? >> Uh, >> hey, how you doing? You want a sticker? >> There you go. >> Uh, anywhere. Come on. >> So, you said he pushed you down? >> He didn't push me down. He was trying to get out the door trying to get him out and I was in I was trying to get out the way, but he was too fast for me. So, he pushed me down and then he busted the head right there. He pushed me down on purpose. He put me down cuz he was trying to gas for some breath. But he going to my goddamn house. I'm done with him. I'm done with that. My son I love I'm done with him. >> Does he have any medical conditions or mental health condition? >> That's a medical condition. They need to get up off there. >> Yeah. >> With me smoking for years, but I'm 13 years clean. I'm going to be 14 years clean. If I can get out, no damn well they can. >> Okay. >> So, he's addicted to >> Yeah. He just anything he can get his hands on. >> Okay. Bust them hoes through my pocket. >> Where is this glass from? Is that from the coffee table? >> No. Let No, it was no coffee table. I had glass egg trays on my tablet >> from my instant. He done broke all of it. >> Yes, ma'am. >> Oh, absolutely. >> Absolutely. Got a whole bag full specifically for this. >> There you go. >> Say thank you. >> More than welcome. >> What's he wearing? >> He got a black shirt on. Black short sleeve shirt on with a with some gray joggers. Gray joggers pants on. >> Okay. >> And something else. is some some flies with some white salt. He need to go to damn jail cuz he don't know my goddamn apartment. I want him in jail. He really needs some goddamn help. He need to go to real help. >> Yeah. All right. Let me go get my partner and we'll go chat with him. >> All right. He need to go to hospital, too, cuz he busted. >> Did you guys get stickers? >> Whoa. >> Officers made contact with the son amid several troubling signs. His early behavior showed confusion, disorientation, and clear signs of impaired awareness. >> Soon make the connection. We're going to go chat with him. We're going to talk to him. >> Well, we're going to talk to him. >> I don't like being in front of this window. >> Come right here. >> Yeah. >> Hey, good afternoon. >> How are you, Jamal? >> Yes, sir. >> Okay. [snorts] >> What happened to your face? >> No, I was laced. >> Say again. >> I was laced. >> You was what? >> I was laced. >> Laced. >> Yes, sir. Okay. Are you coming down now? >> Yes, sir. >> Okay. Are you okay to talk to us? >> Yes, sir. >> Okay. You want to come and sit on these steps right here? >> Yes, sir. >> Let's take a seat right there for me. Go ahead and have EMS on right. All right, Jamal. So, uh, what's been going on this afternoon? >> I don't know. >> You don't know? >> Just normal day. >> Say again. >> Just a normal day. >> Okay. Jamal, what do you stay at? All right. Are you related to anyone out here? >> Yes. >> Okay. Who are you related to? >> Okay. Who's your mom? >> Jita. >> Jvita. Okay. Have you been over there today? >> No. >> Okay. No, you hadn't been over there today. Okay. When you say you were lace, what were you using? >> It was synthetic. >> Synthetic. >> Yes. >> Okay. When did you use that? You don't know. Okay. Hey, how long have you been out of it? You're unsure? Was it at some point today? Was it sometime last night? Or when can you give me a ballpark of when you used >> Okay. So, you're unsure if you're >> I'm listening. >> Huh? >> All I can tell you. >> Uhhuh. >> I don't know what happened. I know I supposed to. >> Okay. Let me just tell you I know I smoke. >> I smoked it. I don't know. >> Okay. When is my question smoking? I just >> You just don't You just don't know when you were smoking. >> Yeah, I just don't know. >> Okay. All right. >> Smoking. >> Do you know how you made it over here from? >> Do I know how I made it over here? >> Yes. >> No. >> Okay. So, no. You have a big laceration over your left eye. Would you like to go get that treated? >> Yes. Okay. All right. So, I got an ambulance on the way coming to get you now. Are you willing to go with them to get treated for your eye? Because you're probably going to have to have stitches over your left eye. Are you okay with that? Okay. I'll let you make that determination when you get on get on there. She's going to have some questions for you and then I'll be back. Okay. Just remain just remain seated for me. >> Clear communication was challenging due to unclear speech, leading officers to rely on additional context from the mother to better understand the circumstance. >> Mom, what's a good phone number for you? I think that he stays at Millie B apartments, but I mean I think that he's staying over here at Colt Ridge. >> We got no phone number. >> You don't have any way that we could reach you if we needed to contact you? No, nobody that we could call. >> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. There's glass broken in there. Yes. >> Only contact I had was my sister contact. >> Okay. Who's your sister >> now? What to do with you though? >> Huh? >> What they got to do with you tonight? >> Well, cuz we need a contact information. We need contact. We're just trying to figure out a way that we can get in contact with you if we need to talk to you. >> Yeah. So, do you have a phone number? >> What's your sister's name? >> Be careful with your eye. Okay. >> Yeah. Don't Don't rub it. What happened to your hand right there? >> Oh, >> how do you know you were laced? >> That guy, man. >> How do you know? >> How do you know you were laced, Jamal? >> I didn't know that. >> Where did you get it? >> I don't know. >> I don't know where you got the Did you get it? here in Cridge? Did you get it from your homeboy in Nelly Beach? Did you get it from Vessel? Did you get it from downtown? I >> got no homeboy in. >> We're just trying to figure out where you got it. >> Trying to figure out where you might have gotten it. >> What got to do with like this? Like >> cuz you said you lived in Nelly. >> Yeah. Be over there like like what this got to do with container to this. >> Um it also looks like his socks are stuffed full of stuff. >> When you say this, what does that mean? Like, yo, that's a like >> we're just we're just trying to figure out cuz if someone's giving you lace, I don't think that's very good. >> I don't think that's safe. >> I don't know what they're dealing through as far as the domestic and whether or not he laced or not. These are the big baggy gray sweatpants from the Boa Franco, >> I that he's wearing. So, I want to go see if he's got like a coat >> that he's since taken off. >> Yeah. Where where's >> I mean, yeah, there's more than one pair of big baggy gray sweatpants, right? But >> no, but if we see a black jacket with great arms, >> especially with that like hat. >> Yeah. Where'd he jump? >> I think from this apartment. >> Listen. >> Careful with your eye though. >> Yeah. Don't rub your eye. Okay. >> Yeah. >> Who lives in this apartment? >> Who stays in this apartment? >> Who's that? You trying to get up there? >> Nah, they're my bro. They're my baby, bro. I just want to talk to them, man. >> You don't know what their name is? No. >> Are they home? >> No. So, how'd you get in? >> You don't know how you got in? No. Do you know how you got that cut on your eye? >> I do. >> You do? How'd you get it? How'd you get it? >> I was trying to get in. >> You fell. My heart was pounding like >> Where'd you fall? >> I don't know. >> But you know you fell. Yes. >> Okay. >> I want to have taken mother to goddamn jail upon the goddamn rehab. Don't make no goddamn s. >> I got a question for you. When did he come over here? >> He don't stay here. He just be over here every He come out here every day >> today. The man was charged with seconddegree criminal damage to property, robbery, simple battery, shoplifting, financial transaction card fraud, and financial transaction card theft. [music] On May 29th, 2024, he pleaded guilty to all charges and received a sentence of 5 years probation and 2 years of incarceration along with $100 in court fees. Although they appeared only briefly in the video, the children, the man's own children, and the mother's grandchildren were the most profoundly impacted. This is why whenever a child's safety may be compromised, protective action must come before hesitation. Florida witnessed another troubling situation when two other children were found alone in a public area. >> And they're wandering on a parking garage and they can get hit by a car, bro. You know what I mean? >> On May 18th, 2024 in Florida, two young children were discovered without adult supervision in a public space. Nearby residents immediately [music] called the police. At the scene, the children's stepmother was questioned, but she repeatedly evaded and gave vague answers. >> Hello, I'm calling back. >> Ma'am. >> Yeah. >> Who are you? >> Hello. Hello. That was in the office. >> Can you answer my question? >> Huh? >> Can you please answer my question? >> Tell them, you know, they walk out. >> Hello. >> Yeah. Laura's stepmom. >> Cool. Can you put the children over there? They're not touching the children. >> Oh. So you are you not the real mom? Whose real mom? >> She passed away. She just >> So can I talk to you? Okay. >> Yeah. >> What do you want to talk about? >> Who you think? The kids. >> The kids. Okay. >> Who you talking to? I don't understand. >> The dad. That's their dad. >> Where's dad at? >> He he on his way back. >> All right. Well, >> where's he at? >> Hello. He on his way. He was 5 minutes away. >> Okay. Where's dad? >> Huh? >> Where's dad though? >> He just dropped me off. >> Listen. Listen. He beating around the bush. I'm not trying to be rude. I'm not trying to be disrespectful. I'm very straightforward. Right. So, can you please answer my question? Where's dad coming from? >> Oh, he just dropped me off. Home. >> Where was dad prior to this? >> He was picking me up from work. >> Okay. And where were the kids? >> At home. >> With who? >> Our other child. >> With who? >> He at home. >> With who? >> Our other child. At home. >> Who's the other child? >> Son. >> How old is he? Let me get this straight. You guys left these two babies with an 11-year-old. >> No, I was at work. I didn't. >> So, dad did? >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> Oh, >> fantastic. >> And dad's on his way. >> Yeah. >> Fantastic. >> Her conflicting statements, sometimes shifting blame, other times denying everything made the police increasingly suspicious. >> What is the address you guys live in? >> Oh, 542. >> See if any uh child or something along these lines. >> So, I got through the DCF. >> Okay. Um he's a stepmom. So basically dad left children alone then go pick her up with an 11year-old >> in an apartment by himself. >> I guess he wasn't really paying attention cuz it's an 11-year-old probably playing games on his phone. >> Does this happen all the time or >> No. >> The father of the two children arrived shortly after and voiced his disappointment with his wife. >> Is that your big dad? >> Yeah. man or stepdad or whatever the case is. Sir, >> how you doing? >> What's going on? >> Can you talk to me real quick? >> Yes, sir. >> What's going on? >> Uh, they were sleeping. I ran to the store real quick. Uh, she was there. I didn't know she was leaving to go to work and it's pretty much about it. >> You with uh 11year-old? >> No, with with her. I didn't know she was going to work. >> So, your story is different. >> I apologize. >> Can I stand with this officer, please? What happened, bro? >> Oh, that that's exactly what it is. [music] So >> I need help. She was helping me, >> man. She just left. So the kids in her care is what you tell me. >> And I was coming right back. >> Where were you going? >> I was going to the store and I was trying to get a part for the car. Okay. >> And they need diapers and wipes. So I was also trying to get everything at once. >> Has this ever happened before? >> No sir. But what he does sometimes he'll unlock the door. Yeah. >> And >> Yeah. Things like that happen. I get that. >> They're never left alone ever. >> Okay. >> Cuz their mom isn't here and they're all I have. So >> you did the responsible things. You're telling me you left your children in the care of your wife, girlfriend? >> Yes, my girlfriend. >> Okay. She left the crib. >> Yes, sir. >> And left alone within 11 hours. >> That's what you're telling me. >> I didn't know she had to be to work on leaving. We didn't communicate that. So, >> I'm I'm investigating because you understand. I get a call for service. We come through and they're wandering on a parking garage and they can get hit by a car, bro. You know what I mean? >> Yes, sir. >> Good thing nothing happened, but so I'm here trying to investigate. So my man >> however the situation grew more complex when the father began talking about the challenges of being a single [music] parent seeking understanding from the police. >> Sir, do you have ID on you? >> Yes, sir. >> Let me get your ID. Would you like to fill out a statement for me on your side of the story? >> I appreciate >> So you know I'm conducting a criminal investigation. Not saying I'm charging you with anything, but since I'm conducting investigation, you're not free to leave. So you can sit down right here with your kids. I appreciate it. >> Did you get free yet? >> Yeah, they are 51. It's gonna be a while though. >> That's my right. >> Yeah. Yeah. >> Uh I'm ready to hear as well. Okay. So just need to verbally yes or no. You have these you have the right to remain silent. You understand sir? Yes sir. >> Anything you say may be used against you in court. You understand sir? Yes sir. >> You have the right to talk to a lawyer before and during questions. You understand sir? Yes sir. >> If you cannot afford a lawyer and want one, what will be provided for you before question without charge. Do you understand sir? Yes sir. >> Has anyone threatened to you or promise you come talk to me? During questioning, he shared his personal perspective on these difficulties, raising further doubts about the stepmother's responsibility. >> You your children in the care of >> Okay. Which is your girlfriend? >> Yes. She lives with you? >> Yes. >> Okay. And where who were you again? >> I went to the store. I went try to look for the parts. Car giving problems. Got it right. Can't straight. >> Okay. >> And then that's when she called and was like, "Hey, did you pick me up from work?" I'm like, "Pick up from work?" She's like, "Yeah, uh, I understand." >> Okay. totally. >> Did you Did you know did you tell her that she was going to be here with the kids? >> Yes. I said, "Stay out. I'll be right back." >> Okay. And she knew the kids was going to be there with you. >> Yes. Because when she told me uh she needed to grab something from work and come back, I'm expecting that to happen. >> Okay. >> So, I called my sister and then she was like she had tried but she's going through more situations. So, >> I got you. >> But once I once she called and was like, "Hey, I need you to pick me up. Come pick me up." Automatically they were here. I came checked around and yeah, >> I got you. >> I promise I never my family and they all I have. >> No, I got you. >> This is hard right now. I'm a single dad. I need all the help I can get. >> Have you left your kids alone with hell in the past? >> Always. And they're and they're always fine. I call daily. FaceTime them. Everything's good. This is the first time this has ever been something like this ever. I've never just my kids alone. That's not what I do. I'm went through a situation where we had a home and they lost their mom. All I have. >> Did Did she know your kids were home though? Like you told her like >> Yes. >> Okay. >> When she was telling me she needed to get something from work, >> come right back. I was expecting that. Like I said, when she contacted me and said, "I might need to get me." I'm thinking like it was only with the kids. >> Yeah. >> Oh, I think your sister's gone. I called my sister. She was like, "I can't make it." Cuz she's packing her stuff cuz her husband's going through it. She has to be there. So, I'm like, "Let me just hurry up and get her." >> Okay. >> Because now I'm thinking they're there with my son. I'm calling him. He's not answering. >> Okay. So, let me let me So, let me get the gist of everything. I correct me if I'm wrong. >> So, you basically you basically went to the store, get car parts or whatnot. You left your children with an an adult. >> Yes. >> Who knew the children was there, >> right? >> This adult then left after assuming the responsibility of taking care of your kids. >> Yes. >> Okay. And you guys been each other for how long? 4 years. That's what she said. My dad relationship. Yes. But as far as like knowing, >> yeah, >> since almost like elementary, >> I'm going to say no for how many? >> For a long time. That's why I would trust her to just watch until I come back cuz I can't afford and stuff at the moment where I'm trying to get state assistance. >> They [clears throat] told me they let me know by Monday and now we have this problem. So it's like >> No, it's all good. >> If it's not one thing, it's another man. >> I already notified DCF. Doesn't mean they're going to take away kids, but you understand. Uh we were here with the kids for like almost an hour and we had we had to call them. You know what I mean? Um, but I'm calling back so they don't have to come. >> After the father's statement, the stepmother was read her rights and [music] had to tell the truth. Things then gradually became clear and the truth began to surface. >> I am just like I spoke to that gentleman over there. I am conducting a criminal investigation. So I have to ask you questions. In order to ask you questions, I got to read you your rights. So you understand? All right. This does not mean you being arrested. It's not mean you going to jail. All right? It means I have to ask you questions. So you understand? I need a verbal yes or no. Oh yes. >> Okay. You have the right to remain silent. Do you understand ma'am? >> Yes. >> Anything you say may be used against you in court. Do you understand? >> Yeah. >> You have the right to talk to a lawyer before or during a question. Do you understand? >> Yeah. >> If you cannot afford a lawyer or want one be provided for you before questioning without charges. Do you understand? >> Yeah. >> Does anyone you promised you anything to talk to me? >> No. >> Okay. Ma'am, you already lied to me earlier. What happened? >> I went out to go to work and he said he going to come pick me up. >> That's not what you told me before. >> Yeah. He told me that you was with him and he's going to pick you up. That's what they can't pick me up. >> Keep it a stack with me. He He already kept it here. He He keeping a thousand with me. >> I am. >> Are you? >> Yeah. >> So, you telling me you didn't leave kids up there alone? >> Yeah, I did. >> So, you did? >> Yeah. >> Why would you leave a oneyear-old or a 2-year-old alone? >> I had a lot to do. I I have to go to work. >> Ma'am, you see howful that is? >> Yeah. >> You know where we found them? >> Yeah. in a parking garage wandering around. Do you understand? >> Yeah. >> I'm probably don't worry about it. I already saw it. >> Yeah. I should have just called out. >> This has this ever happened before? >> No. >> Okay. Why would you leave to work and leave a one and 2 year old by themselves? >> Yeah. Well, I didn't have a transportation before, but I didn't take care of it. >> But you knew that he left. >> Yeah. >> Okay. So, you know, he left the apartment to handle his business and he left his kids in your care. >> Yeah. and you still left the apartment. Okay. >> I'm sorry. I really so sorry. Okay, I got you. Okay. >> The stepmother was charged on child charges. Under Florida law, if convicted, she could face up to 5 years in prison or probation and a fine of up to $5,000. [music] Court records show, however, that she was actually sentenced to two years of probation. Children are not a burden, but a responsibility them with someone untrustworthy can have serious consequences. Parents should plan, [music] communicate clearly, and protect their children's safety. Florida begins with a story of a family where what should have been the safest place turned into the most stressful environment for the children. >> My mom decided to her until she like couldn't so then she would give it up. On July 18th, 2021, Florida police were called to a home after receiving a report of a family dispute. At the scene, authorities took a statement from the mother. Just give me a few minutes. Okay, there you go. >> Uh, yes. Yes, of course. >> Can my kids can Can can my kids go in the truck if they're leaving? >> I don't need them to be involved in anything extra. >> How about you step back here with me and talk them? >> I'm going to go this way. They can stand under the porch out of this door. Yes, sir. >> Thank you. My kids go my kids go in the truck. Is that okay? >> They're 12 years old. >> We'll deal with that in a second. Let's talk over here. Let's go over there. I called you. >> Okay. So, what's going on? >> It's because it's my daughter's birthday. >> Okay. >> She's turning 13. >> I don't know why this is a problem, >> but like apparently when you turn 13, you're entitled. I don't I don't know. My dad is my house. >> Okay. I don't have a car because I I got in a wreck with a semi on June 1st. I can show you the paperwork for this. >> No, that's fine. However, my dad is here to pick the my daughters up. >> Okay. >> Unannounced for their birthday, which is okay for their birthday, right? >> Yeah. >> I'm the mom. I have full custody. My husband is on the phone right now. I'll put him on speaker. My husband's on the phone. >> Okay. >> He lives in Charlotte. I have full custody. I have raised these girls by myself for the last 4 years. >> Okay. So, what's the issue with him coming to get him? >> He's controlling. >> So, you don't want him to come in now? >> This is his house, though. 584. >> So, I don't know what to do. >> He said he's going to take them out for their birthday. For her birthday? >> No. >> He is or he isn't. >> No. No. He's not taking them out for their birthday. He wants to get this resolved so he can go to the bar. >> The initial conversation focused on issues related to the family's property and the children's grandfather. >> What do you want me to do? >> I don't know what to do right now. >> Well, what can I help you with? >> Make him leave, please. And how long do I have for me to move out? >> Whenever you want. >> Nope. I'm not a squatter. This is my dad. Okay. >> If you want to move out, we can move out. That's that's up to you. >> I can move out anytime. But how long legally do I have? >> Whatever. If he evicts you, then he evicts you. Then >> he's going to do it tomorrow or Monday. >> That's a whole process. That can take weeks. >> Months. I know. >> Okay. >> I know. But this is his house. I rent from him. I do. I do. >> Okay. So this is his house, but he can't legally come inside my home. >> Okay. >> Even though I rent, right? You have to have a notice. >> There's certain laws. Yeah. Landlord, tenant, laws. Yeah. >> So what is what is my law for him coming into my home? >> He has to give notice. >> How much notice? >> I'm not too sure. I have to review the statute, but he does have to give notice. >> I know. I'm not trying to ask for this, but he wants to take my kids, too. I'm a good mom, and I know Florida is a mother's state. >> Okay. You don't want him to take them out somewhere? >> No. No. >> But you're clearly inebriated. I gave you the opportunity to talk to >> I'm here in my own vicinity. >> Well, y'all want to walk out there and talk with me? She wants >> their father. >> Tell me what happened. Just talk a little lower. That way she won't hear you. Cuz >> this afternoon our mom was drunk and he was and she wasn't really paying attention and that's been for a couple of days. We decided to go to our grandpa's for like a couple hours and then we came back and our mom got mad at us and she said that she was kicking us out and she ripped Jada's LED lights. She and this morning she was also me and she me this afternoon too. So we called her grandpa and then she locked the door over there. She wasn't letting us grab any of our things. >> They were at my house for about 3 hours. >> They packed their backpacks and they walked halfway to my house. I live over 110 and they called me cuz she's got asthma and asked me >> this happened today there this morning. >> She you >> let me see your night. >> When did she do this? um 10 15 minutes ago. >> Well, I don't know because because they stayed at my house, like I said, for three or four hours and then they said, "Well, we got Amazon stuff coming to pop up that we ordered and we're afraid that mom's going to get it. We ain't going to find it tomorrow and this and that. Will you take us back home?" And she said, "I got a doctor's appointment Wednesday for my iron to be checked. Can you take me to the doctor's Wednesday?" I said, "If you guys really want to go back home, that's fine. I'll take you back home, but if you need any help, you call me." So, I brought them back 30 minutes ago, maybe 45. And within 20 minutes, they called me. >> Okay. Well, I'll speak with you first over here. One of the children recounted a tense conflict with their mother over the use of a phone. >> So, what happened when you got back over here? You got dropped off, right? Your grandfather. Is that what happened? >> Yeah, he dropped us off and then I went into my mom's room and I told her that we basically like went to her dad's house or my grandpa's house for like a couple hours and she got mad and she screamed at me and she said that if I wanted to leave the house, I could leave and that she's kicking me off. And I said, "Okay." And then she wouldn't let me grab any of my belongings. And then when I tried to walk out with my phone, she tried to grab my phone. And I told her she doesn't have the right to grab my phone because she was drunk when she made that decision. And she me until I gave it to her. >> Where were you at when she >> up there >> on the patio? How did she >> She went like this and she wouldn't let go until I gave her my phone. >> Were you able to breathe during that time? >> No. Did you pass out? You said you did or didn't pass. >> Um I almost I fell on the floor. I I was still conscious, but I fell on the floor. >> Okay. You were Let me see your neck again. All right. Give me move your hair on this side. All right. Give me uh one second. Let me grab a paper. Okay. Uh spell your first in. And you live here with mom. >> And what's a good You said you have a cell phone. What's a good phone number for you? >> The other daughter confirmed the entire story, matching her sister's account. >> What happened when you grandpa dropped you off? What happened after that? >> After our grandpa dropped us off. Well, we walked up to our house and our mom was still drunk or whatever and she still is, but she was sleeping and we woke her up and we told her what happened and that we were over there for about 3 hours and then she got all mad at us. She was like, "You're throwing me under the bus, blah blah blah blah." She said something about she was going to dog and then she got all mad and she ripped all of my sister's LED lights off the wall and then she took my sister's phone and while she was taking my sister's phone they were on the porch and my sister wouldn't give it up. So my mom decided to her until she like couldn't so then she would give it up and I was standing up for my sister and she kept slapping me. >> Okay. Where' she when she >> um when where >> on my nose in my face? Okay, turn this. This used to be on that side of your face on this side. >> Um, it was probably like on both. I don't really know. >> What's your first name? >> And then grandpa, can I get your uh first name? All right, let me go speak with mom again. >> After gathering more information from the grandfather and the two children, the police returned inside to continue questioning the mother. Faced with the accusations, she remained calm and repeatedly denied them. >> You want to speak with him back on the porch? >> No, he doesn't call my husband. my legal husband. So, my husband has rights before my dad. >> So, >> no, I don't need to go on the porch. I'm waiting for him to get off the phone with my husband. We're still married. >> We've been married for 15 years. So, >> so what happened when your daughters got back home? Cuz they left, they were at their grandfather, then they came back. What happened? >> I don't know why the they went to him at all because they don't. The only reason they went is because they wanted a money for their birthday. >> When they came back, what happened? >> Nothing. They told me what happened. They told me, "Hey, I walked all the way there. Papa did this." It's not the right reason for a kid to go and see a grandparent. This is actually the only reason they see him. >> Did you get into an argument with them when you came back when they got back here? >> No, not an argument. A com like a conversation. Yes. >> What happened during that conversation? What was it about? >> Nothing. I sat on my bed. They sat in the chair. There were calendars in my room. I asked them why they had to go to popup just to get money. It's not right. I'm not that kind of person. I'm not I don't want my kids to think that they need to go to see my dad my dad just for money. That's wrong. >> Was there some sort of physical altercation that took place? >> Nothing physical. Just you talking to your kids? >> Yeah, absolutely. >> All right. Let me uh grab some information from you. >> Sir, my husband, what he did? He's on his way. >> Well, he's in another state. You're aware of this, right? So, >> I do know he lives in the Carolinas. Yes. >> It takes 8 hours to get here. >> Get down here. I would rather my husband take my kids as opposed to my dad. My dad's in control. >> What's your first name? What's your middle initial? >> What is What she say? What she say? >> Hold on. She They're talking about something else. >> Uh what >> what's a good phone number for you? What's a good phone? >> Said my dad has a >> No, >> I don't know. What's What's a good phone number for you? >> J up. This is what he's doing. >> And you you live here at this address. There's a Miranda law and he had a warrant, but he doesn't anymore. I took that felony for him. >> Just hang out right here. >> That was over 6 years ago. >> Give me a few minutes. >> With conflicting statements, the police had to examine and document the injuries, cross-checking the information to make the safest and most accurate decision. >> Why do you want my kids? WHY DO YOU WANT MY KIDS? >> HEY, just hold on. >> No. Why do you want my kids? >> I'm talking to you down there. She they say she's been drunk for a few days now. Uh came home from they walked to granddad's house, came home. Upon coming home, they went and talked to mom. Mom got pissed off, ripped some lights off of one of the kids' rooms. Then the kids uh tried to leave. Mom ended up saying she was going to take one of the kids phone. That point the kids said, "No, I'm not giving you my phone." So she reached around her neck, grabbed her with her elbow, and pretty much her. She said she didn't happen. I'll take her. >> The other sister said she tried to help her sister and she was by mom. One sister has she does have a bruise right here on her cheek. The one that said she got I mean I'd like a second opinion but it looks like it could be something but then I'm not too sure that >> ex-boyfriend. >> Yeah. I mean you said you see a bruise on her. Could y'all step over here for me? Both of you, if you could um just move your hair for me. See right there on that side. >> And then you turn that way. Chevy. >> Yeah. >> City. Yeah. What's What's that there? It's right there. It's been there for a little while, but this morning she was slapping me all around my face and she said if I didn't hit her, then she would hit me more. And then I was standing up for my sister this afternoon and me more on my nose. >> Okay, give us a few seconds. Okay. >> The father was mentioned as a possible safeguard for the children. >> I would definitely say for the one I believe >> the other one as far as the car. Give us one minute. But >> you can't. Yeah, because if she's even she was helping her sister, she's I mean >> my kids don't even like your food. >> I definitely think you got one. I don't >> the choking one. Don't know about the >> cuz that could be a form of disappointment. >> It's not really too extreme. It's just the choking. >> No, no, the choking one is extreme. >> Okay. >> By the way, dad who she claimed is dad and who also confirmed he was dad said absolutely has no problem with grandpa taking the kid. >> Oh, that's even better. You're getting his 43. I can get it. I got his phone number. I'll get it. >> I think we're good to go. What did she What did he say about dad? >> She said dad has a felony, but she didn't specify how like I mean he's >> the grandfather who had earlier taken the children out of the house also confirmed that the situation had persisted for many years, not just as an isolated incident on the birthday. >> If I can just get pictures of both of you. If you could turn that way, I'll take a picture of the son >> and then I can get you to come over here. Any further head? >> Look up until that way. >> Okay. >> Is there any way that you could get my phone back? She has it. >> I can't. If it's your mom, I can't get the phone back. As everything that leads up to her taking your phone from you, there's nothing we can do cuz you guys are juveniles obviously, but going to the extreme of choking you, that's a different story. So, I'll talk about grandpa real fast. >> I was going to say I've been dealing with this for about 6 years. >> She always um inebriated >> pretty much. And they moved from they lived well they lived at my house for a year and a half. No rent, nothing. All of them. >> All three of them. Yeah. And I lived here with my girlfriend. This is >> her house. >> Okay. Then they up moved back to North Carolina and they moved in with the Mark's parents and after about 3 months they threw them out and they were living in a hotel and I gave them money to come back down here and then they moved in here. >> Okay. And same thing. She's got a felony on her record too because that guy there he got caught I don't know five six years ago down in Lady Lake County. >> Okay. She went to court. did her side of it because they arrested both of them. >> And then they came back. She came back here, but then she moved to Tahoe with some guys. She got pregnant out there. She came back here. She's done had two of them. Now she just yelled out, "Well, I don't care about you girls anyways cuz I got twins. I'm carrying cuz I'm pregnant." So, she probably is pregnant again. I got her a job at Paul Davis Restoration cuz I own Slim Construction. I'm a construction guy right now. I got a job at Paul Daven Restoration. Lasted about 3 months. She liked to party, go out, run around, whatever. She lost that job. I got her a job with Suncool down in Lady Down in Lady Lake. Mhm. >> It lasted about a month. She had a job before that with the Bank of America as a bank manager. And I've been telling her and telling her, "Rosie, you got to change your life. These girls ain't living the right kind of life. She doesn't like it because I'm right." Yeah. You know, I didn't come to them. They came to me. Yeah. For her to say, "Well, I just want them." But, you know, last time when when she went to Carolina, they put her in a psych ward. Her own that guy called the cops on her >> 593. I had to go up there kind of and get her out of there to bring her back here to reestablish her here. And that's when she moved into my house and everything was good for about a year, year and a half. And then she started all this stuff again. >> Yeah. Unfortunate part is she made up. >> That's where we're at with it. >> Well, when when when they called me to come back and get them this time, she was on the phone with me and she's telling me that the Jada Jada's uh her exact words was a bisexual to come get these kids. I don't want these kids. This that and the other. But now she's saying the other way about it. >> He has no living quarters for him. >> And like I said, I know he's got a warrant for him in Lady Lake County. >> Okay. So where uh give me a second flight up at bumpers I don't know took the sheriff's department. She called me cussing me out. Why'd you put me out? I let her stay tonight. I let her wait until she in front of the judge to try and teach her a lesson. >> She odeed about 6 months ago. She take >> it was fentanyl. >> Fentanyl. Okay. Give me a few seconds. >> Yeah. And I met the officer here to take my granddaughter at that point. They told me I had to come and I had them I don't know a week or two. >> Okay. Have you ever um have they ever disclosed to you any other time that they've ever >> battered by her? >> Have I? >> Have they ever disclosed to you? >> Yeah, they told me that today. That this ain't the first time. >> Okay. Mhm. >> All right. Just give us a sec. >> The police returned to the house and placed the mother under arrest, leaving her suddenly unsettled. >> She over here. >> She's coming up. coming up the dog by white. >> Wait, dang. >> Wait, I just wanted to ask you again. Um, what? So, what happened when they when they came when they showed up here? >> CJ, you're on speaker. Okay, I'm listening. You hear me? What? I'm sorry. >> What happened again when they came here from your >> My kids have full custody of them. I don't understand what's going on. >> Well, we just want to know if there's a physical altercation that happened when you when they got here with you. >> No, no, there's no physical altercation. I don't touch my kids. My dad used to do this to me. I will never be that. >> You're going to END UP WHAT WHAT? NO. NO. NO. NO. NO. NO. Why are you doing this? >> No. No. I have pets. Why are you putting me in cuffs right now? Why are you putting me in cuffs, sir? >> I want Why are you putting me in cuffs? >> I'm going to read them once. >> Why? My dad paid you. >> But you will be >> My dad paid you. >> For what? >> Are >> I just said no. I just said I did not touch my >> Are you kidding me? >> Let's go. >> Really? >> Let's go. A single wrong decision today can have lasting effects on a child's future. These cases may be resolved through procedures and administrative decisions, but their influence rarely fades as quickly. For children, what they observe today can quietly shape how they understand the world tomorrow. That is why every choice made by adults carries greater importance than we often realize.
