Go get her. >> God's sake. >> These children and even [music] the pets. >> Hey, Bruno. Get off my leg. >> Seem to have no [music] way to protect themselves from adult carelessness. >> They're all pushing and me. I've been on the ground. >> Orange County. >> I work for Sim County. And as usual, authorities were present to ensure the safety of the children while reminding the adults of their responsibilities [music] and behavior. Two consecutive collisions left this mother in legal trouble. But what made things even more escalating is her explanation. >> Are you willing to complete this exercise? >> No, >> you're not. >> No, because you're trying to charge me for a DUI when I haven't even had alcohol. On January 9th, 2024, Florida police responded to a chain reaction accident caused by a mother driving recklessly. Within just 10 minutes, she was involved in two back-to-back collisions with two children in the car. At the scene, she admitted to having lost control of a rental vehicle earlier and was trying to retrieve her own car when the second accident occurred. >> Everybody okay? Are you okay? >> Yeah. Who does somebody ask for rescue? Just who's you in the car? Kids. Hey. Hello. >> And my pug. >> Okay. You guys are okay. >> Okay. >> What happened? >> I don't know. This day has been the day from hell. >> Okay. >> This is the second accident I've had within the past 10 minutes. >> Okay. Which way are you coming? Which way were you coming? >> I was coming from Ovito. I just picked my car up. >> Coming this way. I flipped the rental car that I had and then I went to go pick up my car. >> Okay. >> From Oido. >> Which way were you coming? >> I don't know where I'm at. I'm on 426. I was coming this way going towards um university. >> All right. Well, go here. So, >> hello. >> Hey, have you sign a paper saying you're not here in a second? Okay. >> Okay. You have your license, registration, proof of insurance? I have no idea what my registration is >> because I've had to change cars three times. So, >> your registration should stay always stay with the car. >> Take it out of here. >> Okay. >> When I had to 53 years. >> Hello. >> Hi. >> Okay. >> Yeah. Just blast. >> Okay. What happened? Uh, I was driving and next thing I know I got hit. I look back and she's swerving back into her lane and all I know is she kind of came in. >> Which way were you going? >> On the furthest left lane, >> the through lane. >> Yeah, cuz I was try I was going to get into the turn lane, but we weren't there yet. It was back there, >> but you were on 426 here. >> Yeah, she kind of a little bit, but then I kind of came behind her and she realized she's not going to, you know, >> kind of go away. I uh then she pulled off cuz I honked and stuff. >> Okay. And yeah, so she kind of I guess she came up me and then pulled off somehow. >> Just you in the car? >> Yeah, just you in the car. >> So you guys, she was behind you. >> She was behind me. >> She wasn't next to you then came and came over like this. >> Oh, no. She was like Yeah, it was like behind me in the right. >> Oh, right. So she like and came over. That's kind of what >> I wasn't looking behind me. I was going forward. >> That's kind Yeah. Okay. >> So you don't know what happened? Huh? >> No. >> You don't know what happened at all? You know where you are? >> Yes. What happened? >> I don't straight this way. And then where did he come from? So he was on the side of me. I was in the left lane. He was on the right lane. And apparently I swerved into him. >> Any special reason why were you doing anything? Radio, cell phone, anything like that? I've been up since 2:00 in the morning. >> Okay. Well, that could explain it. You're tired, I'm sure. >> Okay. >> Is this the same one from earlier? >> Where was your You said you got into another crash 10 minutes ago. >> Copy 1050. >> Approximately 20 minutes. >> Where was that accident at? >> Parkway. >> Okay. >> I don't know. and Rising Sun Boulevard. >> So that was >> You couldn't have made it all the way from John Young here in 20 minutes. >> Oh, no. I had to get an Uber from there and then I took the Uber to go get my car which is right now. >> That was the car that flipped over. >> The rental. >> The rental flipped. Okay. That was just on John Young. Were you guys with her for that? >> No. >> No. Okay. And then I went to get this car and then we were heading back to the hotel on High Avenue and then I guess I went to his lane. >> Okay. All right. Well, give me just a little bit. Okay. >> Okay. >> All right. >> Meanwhile, officers worked closely with the victims to ensure everyone's safety. >> Hey, good. How are you? >> All right. Here's your information back. >> Here is a copy of the driver's exchange. What we give you at the scene is everybody's information on it. So you can go home, call your insurance companies, and do all that fun stuff. Okay, that's your copy. Any questions for me? >> Yes, I do. He said he thinks that she's on something. Can we ask? >> They just seemed a little weird when she stepped out of the car. >> Yeah, we're talking with her and stuff, so we're >> I just know our insurance company. That's the first question they're going to ask is they just >> No, not really. >> Well, that's what they asked me. They said, "Did you they're asking We're going to get one that there's going to be Well, I don't understand why they >> because I called and said that you got an accident just to let them know, >> right? No, that's fine. That's fine. I mean, I I don't know why that would be details. I don't know. He just he seems to think that she might be on something before she leaves or some sort under the influence test. >> Well, I mean, the insurance companies don't decide that. No, I'm saying we we we evaluate. We see if there's any indicators, stuff like that. I can't discuss that with you right now, but it'll be everything will be finalized on the report. >> So, if there is an indicator on that, is that uh do we receive a copy of that? >> It'll it'll all be Yeah, if there was if there's anything, it'll be on it'll be on the um on the actual actual report because there's a box on there for all that that's checked and everything. >> We can't ask for that is what you're saying. We can't ask for that to be done. >> No. Yeah. I mean, you can ask. Well, I don't mean to be rude when I say it. You can you can ask, but it's we do. It's not something that just because >> you don't have to tell us. >> Correct. Then it's just because somebody says, "Oh, we want them tested for this." We don't automatically do that. I'm sorry. You know, by there has to be indicators. There has to be other things that are that that go along with it. So, I know she like he had mentioned she has some and stuff on her before. I know she told me she was involved in a crack earlier today. You know, things like that can can also be indicators for other things as well, >> right? >> So, we're just asking. >> No, absolutely. Absolutely. >> All right. Anything else that you need from him? >> No. Anything else you need from me? >> That's it. That's that. >> Okay. All right. Well, you are definitely good. Good to go. You okay? A little nerve-wracking, huh? >> I'm sure something in the road, but yeah. >> Oh, well. >> All right. Sorry. >> No, you understand an hour away. >> I got it. No, I got it. I just got off. Plan on cooking for Nicole and now something. >> I made you dinner. Well, yeah, but [laughter] I was used fighting guy. So, >> yeah. Um, we're going to we're going to we're going to do some talking. Everything will be part of my my my investigation. And like I said, you know, >> okay, I appreciate your help. >> Absolutely. All right. Anything else you need? >> It's drivable, right? Is there a flat tire or anything? >> No, it just looked like it dented up pretty good. Dented up, but but yeah, before you beat the storm. >> All right, y'all have a good day. Okay. any Spanish speaking alien. >> After being asked to [music] step out of the vehicle, her signs of fatigue and lack of alertness became more apparent. Yet, she initially refused to cooperate with safety checks. >> Is that from >> Yeah, that was from the flip. >> Okay. Okay. And you're okay. You don't need medical or anything like that? >> I don't think so. As of this point, I feel good. I feel very sore. >> Mhm. >> Well, I'm going to go home and see how it goes. You think you're okay to drive? >> Yeah. >> I'm going to drive very slow. >> Give me just a few more minutes. I'm going to finish up some stuff and then I'll actually I need to see your that right back. I need to I forgot I needed to print something. So, give me just a few more minutes. You're stumbling, getting out of the car. You're >> Yeah, cuz I've been absent. >> So, because of those things though, what we're going to do is now that the crash investigation's done, we're going to we're going to move forward into a DUI criminal investigation. Because of that, I'm going to read you your rights. Okay? >> So, you have Hold on. Let me read you your rights and then I'll talk to you about it. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can be used against you in court. Do you understand each of those rights as I have explained them to you? Do you understand those rights, ma'am? >> [ __ ] Call me an attorney now. >> Okay. But do you understand your rights? You're not getting back in your car. >> Oh, I am getting in my car. They're all empty. >> They're empty. I That's where he described >> those and put them on when he was laying down when he got home from surgery. >> I had gone to Walmart to get his medicine and get his medication and get all the gauze cuz he used all the gauze on the way home. And I had pulled over two times, three times on the way home because he was just binging and freaking out. Cuz I'm not really seeing anything. >> No, I mean he just me and then my threw me into the ground. I just I I can't deal with this anymore and I have to talk. >> So you said you said he you >> Yeah, he did. My mom saw it and then the other one threw me to the ground. He me to the ground. >> The ground. >> I don't want anything to die. I just >> getting a statement. >> No, I haven't been that far. I'm trying to figure out what happened. Well, there's been a couple police statements here. I mean, >> I don't mind. She's not even gonna give me one. So, >> all right. Do you want to provide a statement as to what happened tonight? >> I just wanted none and I just >> I just want them to go. >> I understand that they live here, though. >> They live here. >> My oldest doesn't. >> Okay. Well, >> my 17-year-old does. And um >> Is that the guy in the white? Is that the kid in the white? Um >> so what happened is I got in a divorce with my husband. >> Okay. So, I had everything for my kids. And then I got a boyfriend. Thank you. I got a boyfriend. There was an incident that happened there and I just requested the body cam. Um the statements. I just I don't want to deal with this anymore when he's 18. I just want to evict him. I just want him done. >> So, you're not wanting to provide a statement as to what happened tonight? >> I don't want to press charges. I don't want anything to happen to my kids. I don't >> just hang tight right here. Okay. Don't go anywhere. >> Go straight into the statement. We'll get the story and then ask >> I'm trying to figure out what happened. >> I know, but just go straight >> because she's all over the place. She's drunker than [ __ ] She's all over the place. >> Talk to them. See what they had to say. Like I said, grandma said they were doing both back and forth, but she doesn't know who's drunk. Yeah, cuz apparently mom said she's missing a two that was in one of her cabinets. So that's why I'm make sure these two are Pat searched real well and not just left around. Says there's a gun in the second drawer and the gun's not there now. So that's what we're trying to figure out. >> The children also shared their perspective. Differences between the mothers and children's accounts complicated the investigation. When video evidence was reviewed, some of the mother's statements became questionable. >> You get all his information? >> I haven't got anybody's information yet. I'll do >> Yeah, I So I called the police. I did. >> I got a a threehour story been going on for 3 hours. >> This all started when I was laying in my bed with her >> hear a big boom. I'm like, did she just hit the >> the [ __ ] dog opened the door and came out of that house? >> What? >> Why are people so nosy? Like why is he even out here? This got nothing to do with his >> So what's it called? So, we all heard a boom and so I'm like, did she just hit the garage? And and I come out here. If we go see how her cars parked, the car park landed. So, she hit the garage, backed out, and came back in. I go in her room and I'm like, "Mom, how you been drinking?" And sorry, let me backtrack. I already told him I seen her bump into the thermostat and stumble. So, I go in there. I'm like, "Mom, have you been drinking?" She's like, "No." I said, "Put it on Grandpa's grave that you haven't drank any liquor." She said, "I I swear to Grandpa's grave I drank no liquor." go in her car, pull out a Walmart bag full of pink Whitney. Four of them are still cold. The other six are drinking. So I go in her room and like SL Grand a been drinking, right? SL Grand ain't drinking nothing. And I put it all on the vent. And then we're all just arguing, arguing. Everyone's arguing. And so then I can't remember everything, but I do remember when she my we got it online video. We're telling her. So there's a video y'all can I don't remember what happened. video my sister is it's the video is about what she was saying talking about how she wish she herself I hope I right in front of you calling me a bad and so I'm walking out of her room and I'm like no keep the door open and she and she pushes me I'm like what the is good with you if you push me again I'm going knock your out cuz I'm trying to scare her hands off me I did say I would knock her out but I ain't touch her that one time knock me out then knock your mom out knock me out then Jada gets between us and she's like don't touch him. Shees my sister. So I put my hand in her face. I said, "Don't touch my sister, bro. Stoping us." Then we all start arguing again. And we call my grandma to pull up. And then what's it called? So then we all just start arguing. Everyone's arguing, bro. Like I can't like This was going on for 3 hours, bro. I can't remember every detail. Everybody's been arguing. >> You want to provide statement as to what happened? >> Yeah, I will. Let me see that video. >> She's in bed. >> Yeah. And then here, if you go here. >> Okay. >> This is basically the argument. >> Yeah. Who's that? >> He don't have a shirt on. >> He's got all the cop. >> Always got to make sure. >> So, in the beginning of the video, we were taking like her her car keys, her wallet. >> So, that's might be missing. >> Yeah, we took it so she wouldn't do anything to herself. They tried to say I took it. >> No, somebody said the missing. So that's why I was looking at you for confirmation. >> That happened. That's what happened before cuz grandma tried to lie saying I stole the >> I never >> here. >> Oh my gosh. Two more. >> So a drinking problem. >> Yeah. >> Ben had a drinking problem. Officer, >> is there a hole in the garage, y'all? By the way, >> yeah, that was here. That was me grabbing the telling him to take it. >> Take this. >> Who did you give it to? >> Okay. So that was us grabbing the and then there's more shots in there and then we were looking for her key to try and >> Do you Do you have the video of her? >> I don't think we got that one on film but it's just the whole argument. >> It's just the argument. >> Yeah. >> I got up and she and then she like I like my mom. >> It's okay. This boyfriend trying to hit on me >> telling her own son that he's not going to gra That's a look. Here she goes. Get in my face. Here she look at her. Look at her. You see that? Like that's all she does. >> Racist to us. Where's the problem? her car through the garage. Where are the shooters? >> That's all the alcohol talking. >> Where are the shooters? >> And then this is just arguing. >> Arguing, arguing, arguing. >> Mind you, she's threatening to kick my six sister out. >> Mind you, they're bringing me down. She's the problem. She's the problem. She's the problem. SOMETHING. >> Now I know why you were so fired up when I heard her. You heard her. I tried to stop her two years ago. It's been a >> problem. Standing behind you. >> Keep going. I can see. Is there anywhere where she >> I mean nothing like that's when we started recording. When she started putting her hands on us, that's when we that's when we started recording. >> Okay. >> The situation escalated as police documented the mother's disruptive behavior during the incident. >> There's no altercation. There's no physical on any of the videos. She doesn't have any consistent with anything being physical. Nobody else has any with anything being physical. She didn't make a direct but or about the but she says on camera. I'm going to myself. They're all saying there was something but nobody has any. I say we baker. >> We got her on video. She's clear as day I want. >> We can do to baker. Problem is is I think we still have a domestic battery. might have not have physical evidence. >> No, it's not. >> Says that it was physical throwing things each other. >> But we also have video, too. And there's nothing on video. >> Correct. Because they only record certain parts of it. >> You got a statement saying that they were battered. >> I have a statement from the daughter saying that him, she got in between them, then her. The daughter created space. The mother got mom got in her face. He created space again as well. >> Is it a battery or is it a creating space issue? >> From what I understand, the older created space with And >> okay, so we have two batteries >> as well as I mean you have that andor obviously you have it on camera saying she wants herself there's also the battery that's it could go baker or >> so I would say baker with an open PC for domestic battery >> and then we'll do him as a victim. Oh, no. I take it back. 17 job. >> She's a child as well. She's a sophomore. >> He's got a saving from him. >> So, you would have these times, too. >> And I can't take a statement from her. So, she's too. >> We can arrest her and place her on the baker of paper. >> So, what do you do? We could just arrest her and take her there. >> Well, what happens is the jail will process her in and then >> send her over anyway. >> Yeah. Both of sitting on the counter. She was in the bedroom. I come walking out. I see him. See, I freaking face. I'm open it up. There's two on there. Both of them. Florida law allows authorities to intervene to assist individuals showing emotional distress and to ensure safety for themselves [music] and others. After evaluation, the mother received support under this provision due to her emotional state. >> Do me a favor. >> Uh-huh. >> Come here for me. >> Uhhuh. Is it okay if I use the back of my hand to pat down the sides? >> Okay. >> It's not my fault. >> Okay. >> Can I call my boyfriend? >> Not yet. >> And I didn't put my hands on my girlfriend and they both touched me and they both me to the ground. So, can I say I want to make a statement now? >> No, it's too late for that. >> This is ridiculous. >> Are you seen? >> Absolutely ridiculous. This is not okay. >> Is it okay if mom takes possession of your >> I just don't I just don't understand what I did wrong. >> You your kids. Okay. Number one, >> I didn't touch. >> Hang. Hang on. So, what we need to do is just find out tomorrow who she was. >> Where do you want them to go? Can they stay here with the oldest one? >> No, absolutely not. >> Well, then where are they going to go? >> I mean, my oldest one moved out. Um, they can go to my mom's house. >> Mom doesn't want to take them. >> So, I'm going to call DCF and we're going to get the ball rolling on that. >> I mean, what's my only option? Like I can make a statement like I wasn't in the wrong. They both put hands on me for >> defending myself. >> Where's the oldest one live at? >> I honest I don't know where he's living at right now. I know sometimes he's at his dad's. >> Can they >> Can they go with him? >> With their dad. >> Yeah. Where does dad live at? >> I mean, he's never wanted them in the last 2 years. So, I don't know. I'm off Toledo Blade in the apartments. >> Okay. Well, we got Here's here's how it here's how it goes. Either we have to find them somewhere to go or if we don't find them somewhere to go, we got to call DCF and then they go into DCF's custody. >> Okay. Well, I'm I mean I've been a director of preschools for all my life and I'm a foster parent by law. >> Yeah, that's the question. Where are the kids going to go? >> I understand. So, >> I want to listen to her. >> I'll tell you guys. >> N to be honest, officer, this been going on for a while. She stop. She tried to she she he she got her ar him arrested before cuz she tried to make up lies. She literally like will herself and run into and create on herself to make it look like he went to jail overnight for it cuz the officer said something like since he's a minor they have to go whatever the says or something like it was something like that. He was like since she's a minor he has to they have to go what mom says and they can't listen to what he says. So he actually got sent to jail for that but like he didn't need to. He was just >> Gotcha. She she she's crazy bro like she needs help. >> Uh sir, you think I'd be able to say something real quick or no? Good. Hang on one second. This is my issue with that. I don't want no relationship with her. But I care for them. And how she treats them is not okay. >> They're not staying at my house, are they? >> They're going with dad. >> Okay. Um if I'm in a state I'm just asking. If I made a statement, would it have been different? >> No. >> I mean, I don't understand because they couldn't have along. I didn't touch every one of them. >> You have three independent people saying the same thing. There's no video of it. There's no physical evidence. Okay. But you're on video saying you want to yourself. >> I know. >> I have three different people giving me the same story. Separated. Giving me the same story. >> And they both said they didn't put hands on me. >> Correct. >> So they're both They're all mine. >> I wasn't here. >> I know. But what did my mom say? I'm just saying because >> I don't know. I didn't talk to your mom. The other deputies did. >> That's just crazy. I was >> mom says mom says that you your two kids. So >> you just said you didn't talk to my mom. >> Well, that's what they told me. I didn't direct talk to her, but that's what they told me your mom said. >> Yeah, my mom didn't say that. >> Relatives arrived to ensure the children's well-being. >> Here's what I'm concerned about. The younger son has been known to take her car in the middle of the night and go joy riding and follow his girlfriend home to make sure she gets home safe. He does not have a license. So, I would like the keys so he can't take the car. >> That's up to mom. Okay. >> Mom's residence, not yours. >> Do you want him to ask her? Can we ask her? >> Can we ask her if I can have the keys? >> Yes, I will do that right now. >> Does my mom have my phone? >> Where's your car keys at? Your phone's going with you to jail. Where's your car keys at? >> I'm going to give your car keys to your mom so your son doesn't enjoy a ride while you're in jail. >> Um, they're usually inside my pillow. >> Inside your pillow? >> Yeah, that's where I have to get them. >> Okay. >> Because he steals my car all the time. >> You go in there. Go find the keys. >> Okay. >> You're going to have to try to find them. They're somewhere in there. There's so much stuff thrown around. She says they're in a beige pillowcase. She's got 10 beige pillowcases. I looked in there. >> Beige pillowcase. >> Beige. Beige. The color beige. She's going to have to be QuickBook. And then taken to CS. >> The mother face child [music] charges. Under Florida law. She could face 5 to 15 years in prison. The legal system carefully evaluates complex family situations to ensure children are protected. [music] In this case, despite the conflicts, the children's well-being and safety were fully secured. What seemed like a minor incident at Walmart caught the attention of the entire community when police found two children [music] unattended in a car on a day. This is the state of Florida. Do you know how hot it gets in here? But it's very cool out today. I mean, when you got here, it was not that cool. >> On March 20th, 2025, Sebastian, Florida police received a report of suspicious activity at Walmart. A grandmother was observed trying to adjust barcodes to pay a lower price. Upon arriving, officers discovered a more concerning situation. Two children left without adult supervision in a car in 30° C weather. >> Sorry. We're going to lean up against the car if you're able to. Okay. I'm just going to search you. Can you spread your feet if you're able to? I know you've had surgery, but no pockets or anything. >> No, ma'am. >> And you said you have an underwire bra? >> Yes, ma'am. >> Okay. Forgive me if I pinch you with my gloves. Okay. Yeah. >> Have you ever been in trouble before or anything like that? No. Can I see a thumbnail? Cuz I keep being like that too long. >> Yeah, if you need to do that then that's fine. >> Mhm. >> There you go. >> Is it okay? >> Yes. Just >> tight. Let's twist it underneath. Ouch. 42, can you show females have a team want? So, usually anyone that is charged with theft in this specific Walmart, they request a trespass. Okay. Have you ever been trespassed anywhere? No. >> Okay. I'm going to explain it. Okay. So, right now, this right now is not a crime. piece of paper documenting that Walmart does not want you on the property anymore. Okay? So, that includes the entire property, parking lot, everything like that. You can never come back here. This does not expire. This won't go away in a year or two or anything like that. It's not on your criminal history or anything like that. It's just saying that Walmart already warned you that if you come back, you're going to go to jail. Okay? So, obviously, you're not going to be able to sign it because you're in handcuffs. So, I'm just explaining it to you and I'm going to write verbally acknowledge because everything is audio and video recorded. Okay? last name is not Gordon. It's Leon Gordon even on my license. >> Okay. So, it's you have like two last names. >> Yes, it's >> So, I'll explain that when they enter it in there. I will give you your copy. It'll be in your property or I can put it in your purse [snorts] and everything like that just so you can look it over at a later date. This does just stay on record. So, I do want to let you know, okay, if you do come back here, you're going to go to jail for trespassing. Do you have any questions about this or anything like that? Okay. It's like I said, it's pretty standard. It's usually to prevent thefts and everything like that from Walmart. They request everyone be trespassed that >> I can go I can go to that gas station though, right? >> The gas station is Walmart's property as well. >> Okay. >> Okay. So, I would honestly just steer clear away from all of Walmart and everything in it. Okay. Do you have any other questions? Okay. Like I said, you're not getting charged with trespassing. This is just saying that you're not able to be here anymore. Okay. So, if you do, you'll go to jail. All right. Hang tight for me. your nieces went fallen. >> The grandmother appeared unaware of the risks of the children in the vehicle. She explained it was only temporary and mentioned that others had done the same. >> What I say is that I didn't know I was doing that wrong cuz she was 12 years old and her sister's eye and the doors were open. They had something to drink and I pulled open the door. She said parents do that all the time. They leave the two KIDS IN THE CAR. I I don't understand. I did wrong if she can open the car. >> So, when you told me that the kids asked to leave the car running and you told them no, why wouldn't you just leave the car running for them? >> No. As far as I know, you can't kids in the car with a car running. >> You can't kids in a car. This is the state of Florida. Do you know how hot it gets in here? >> But it's very cool out today. I mean, when you got here, it was not that cool. It was over 75°. And it does not take a long time for heat to build up inside of cars. Remember how you sat in my patrol car when you got in? You said, "Wow, can you open up the windows? It's really hot in here." And you were only in the car for less than 10 seconds. Those children were in that car for over an hour. Ma'am, I'm going to explain to you something real quick. Carbon dioxide builds up in your bloodstream, which is air that you keep on rebreathing over and over again. It becomes toxic. When it becomes toxic, it might cause you to hallucinate or cause your normal faculties become impaired to the point where you might not have the ability to open up a door. It can turn that bad that quick. your vision starts blacking out and then it goes into black and then you pass out and then you just don't wake up. That's how carbon dioxide poisoning works. That's what happens when you shut the car doors, the windows were all up and it's really hot out. Okay. That's what happens. Especially after an hour, you're starting to look at some side effects starting to occur. Okay. >> Okay. And when EMT checked them out, they were okay though, right? >> They were okay. >> So, am I being charged with that too? >> Yes. So, you're being charged right now with misdemeanor, retail theft, and child >> even though they had access to open the car. >> Did you not understand what I just explained to you about how that they might not have the ability to do that if they have enough carbon dioxide build up in their because they've been sitting in a car, hot car for over an hour? >> Why didn't you just take them with you? >> The little girl was on the phone with their their grandmother. Okay. And not the little girl, I'm sorry. The other girl, the bigger girl was on the phone with her grandmother and they were making arrangements to do a phone call later, like a whatever, some kind of video. Okay. And I was going to take the little one with me and she started screaming that she didn't want to go. Now, I understand what you're going to say, you know, but when the other one turned around and said, "My parents love us all the time." I didn't see anything wrong with that because she's 12 and she's a straight A student. She's not stupid. If she was going to get hot, she could open the door. Well, that didn't obviously occur because when I walked up to the door, the door hadn't been opened. I opened it. There was a bunch of heat that came out of the car door. Both kids were profusely sweating. There was moisture all over the windows of the car. They are smart. They 100% probably could open the door, but they didn't. And guess what? Again, when carbon dioxide builds up in your bloodstream, you might not have that ability to make that decision because you you got poisoning in the >> Did you look at the video and see if they opened it at all the whole time I was in there? >> Ma'am, when I opened that door, there was a rush of heat coming out of there. They've been sitting there for a while. However, the amount of time the children were alone [music] raised serious concern for both police and the local community. >> It comes down to the fact that you came in here to commit a crime inside of the store. You came in here to commit a crime and you children out in the car for over an hour. >> I didn't know it was that long. Hour. I didn't know it was that long, sir. >> You got here at 5:53. I walked up to the car at 6:58. >> Well, they said it in there then. Then I realized But I didn't realize I was that long gone. >> Right. But it's your job to keep track of time if you have children inside of the vehicle that are unattended, right? Like you're responsible for them during this time. >> Okay. So, a question for my future. What age can you get in the car? >> Can't leave them in the car, period. >> No matter what age they are. >> No. >> Again, I'm sorry. I didn't know that. I thought it was like when you have a kid home watching another kid, you know, >> it's different. They're inside in an air conditioning home with access to food, water, and anything else that they need in a secure location. That's a lot different than a busy parking lot in a car that's not running. >> They did have food and they did have a drink, >> but the heat is what could cause them damage like internally and everything like that. Okay. Do you have any other questions? >> No. >> Okay. Oh, you want to call my husband? >> We spoke to him. >> We spoke to him >> again after he left. >> Is this about the groceries >> and my purse is in there? And >> yeah, he's picking up all that stuff. Did he already leave? Uh he he picked the kids up and left, but he said he has to we can call him again. >> Yeah, I have his phone number. I didn't know he already left. >> You give the dispatch and have a call to see if he can come back up there. >> With a total merchandise value of $8367 and her actions, the grandmother was charged with child without great bodily and secondderee [music] petty theft. Under Florida law, she could face up to 5 years and 2 months in prison or 5 years and 6 months of probation along [music] with a $5,500 fine.
