When a home turns into a battlefield, the one posing the danger isn't a stranger. It's the grandmother lying unconscious on the floor. >> Hey, hey, hey. >> Hey, Lonia. >> No, I'm going to call my daughter. >> And even a mother, one willing to abandon her child just to go drink at a bar. >> I just went over there talking to other women. >> All right, go ahead. Put your hands behind your back. >> You give me a chance. Two tragedies in Illinois reveal a bitter truth. Family isn't always the safest place for children. If you think grandmothers always protect their grandchildren, follow the police to meet Audrey McLaren, who will uphend every notion of family. >> Walk like a human. >> Sit down. >> On April 6th, 2024, Kowani police received an emergency call from a 4-year-old boy reporting that he couldn't wake his grandmother. They rushed to the scene and found one child wandering outside while another inside desperately called out to their grandmother who lay unconscious on the floor. >> My nana's sleeping. >> You said that she can't wake you can't wake her up. >> We're not waking up. >> How do you get in and out of here? >> People shouldn't wake her. >> Are you locked out? Where were you at? You've been sitting out here. >> Police department. Police department. Is everybody okay? Hey, baby. Oh. Hey, hey, hey. Hey, Latia. Latonia, >> she's snoring. >> She is snoring. What's your name? >> What's your name? Audrey. >> Audrey. What? >> And you're not fine because here's the deal. >> Yes, I am. Yeah. No. >> Is you have two little kids here that are not >> I'm fine. I They was sleeping. We're napping. We was sleeping. No, I'm fine. >> You've been drinking? You've been drinking? >> You've been taking anything. You're very >> No. Oh, no. >> Do you have a history of like seizure or anything like that or No, >> you were asleep. Asleep. Okay. And the two babies, you know. Where's their mom at? >> Work. She's working. >> She's on her way now. Okay. What's uh mama's name? >> We're fine. >> Okay. Well, we're not fine. Okay. >> Yes, we are. We're fine. >> The ambulance is going to have to check you out. >> No, I'm fine. >> We couldn't wake you up and the kids couldn't wake you up. Some kind of medical issue or So, have you been drinking alcohol? >> I have >> after she went to work >> earlier. That was earlier, but I'm fine. >> What's your name? Give me your name. >> I just told you my name. >> Your last name. >> Where's my We're fine. You guys going to have to leave. >> We're not leaving until you're The kids aren't safe with you right now. You were asleep on the floor. >> In a desperate attempt to drive the police away, the grandmother grabbed a pair of handcuffs for herself. That's when the attack on the officers began. >> She's walking down. She's on the floor. Knocked out when we got up there. There was a kid outside, kid upstairs. We had to stern him rub them and she got back. And she's super highly intoxicated, my guest. >> No, we're fine. >> You have a dog? >> Yes, I have a dog. >> Did y'all let him out? >> Yeah, that's my dog. >> No. No. Come on. Let me let me not run a show here. Talk to them. >> You know what? I'm not talking to nobody. I will ask. >> Do you want to go? They need to make sure you're okay. >> No, I'm fine. I told you I'm fine. >> We're only concerned. >> You're not concerned. I'm praying. I'm fine. >> You're on the hallway. There's kids outside. I'm trying to be respectful. I hope you do it. >> I am being respectful for you, too. >> Your child was outside by the other one's on top of you. Ma'am, you need to talk to these guys before you talk to us. I would love to go that route. Not a lady who's neglecting the kids by them being outside by the >> neglecting my kids. You were passed out on why they're outside by themselves. >> Li, you know what? If you want to hurt me, you hurt me. >> I don't. I want you to get help. Were you having a medical issue? >> No, I'm not. Freaking fine. And people down here needing money. I'm going to call my daughter. >> No, you're under arrest. >> No. No. I'm going to call my daughter. I'm going to call my daughter. >> Call my daughter. >> Well, let me call your daughter. She's on her way here. >> Let me go. >> Do you want to walk outside? >> Walk outside. >> I'll let you call her outside if you stand up nicely. If not, I will drag you out of here. I'm giving you another option. You remember that. I want you to listen to that. Stand up right now. Get your stand up. [Applause] >> Let me call my daughter. My baby. >> Damn. She just >> magical. >> My daughter. >> I'm glad you just bit me. That was awesome. >> I did not bite you. >> That bite mark got >> I did not bite you. Liar. Let my >> your hands behind your back. >> Ma'am, >> my daughter, please. >> You're doing too much. Got it. >> Stand up. >> No. No. >> Calm down. >> In this situation, the police had to both contain the escalation and protect the children's safety. >> Ma'am, you fixed. We already talked to you guys lying. >> You guys are lying. Yes, you are. I don't like you. >> Sit, please. Take a seat. >> You guys are lying. Really? >> We're not. >> Yes, you guys are in the car. >> Okay, you're Andrew. But I don't like you. I don't like their man. >> Put your feet in the car. Get in. >> We're playing. >> Yep. Take your feet, please. >> Daughter's supposed to be in route here. I'm going to get her to the police department. We'll check on the kids first. >> Yeah, I'll check on them. >> And then meet me at the police department. >> I don't want you. >> Mom's on her way home. Okay. See, he told you everything should be okay. All right. >> He's a nice guy. Okay. He's going to stay here till mom gets here. Okay. >> I appreciate you calling us. Okay. Grandma's on the floor and we wanted to check on her. So, I'm glad you called us. Okay. >> We're not the bad guys. Fire trucks over there. I I don't know. He doesn't like fire trucks. He's kind of like a different team, but we're all the same team. We're out here looking for you guys. >> The mother's cousin appeared, becoming a key link for the police to contact the family. >> Are you mother? >> I'm cousin. >> Are you going to take over till mother gets here? Yeah. Have you talked to the mom then? >> No, but I can call her. >> Yeah. So I could just say that to your family. >> Grandma in there. >> Grandma got arrested. Grandma was on the floor. She was completely intoxicated. He was outside by herself. Door was locked. So she was upstairs on top of her like this. Grandma, grandma, she wouldn't get up. We get a call from the little guy saying, "Hey, my grandma might be whatever. She's on the floor, knocked out. Door's locked. We got in. Go upstairs. She's on the floor. Out." We're like, "Hey, hey, hey, hey." Nothing. The little baby, her was on top of her. We get up there, we start rubbing her, rubbing her, rubbing her. She finally gets up. We're trying to go the route. Maybe a medical emergency. Not like so intoxicated, you're not watching the kids, but we were going medical emergency. She started just being completely ridiculous. At that point, you obviously can't have this little guy all by itself. She's on top. You got to watch the children. That's the problem here. >> Taking her to jail too. >> We'll probably take her up there and if she gets anything, it might be NTA and release. Super highly intoxicated and combative. And she also bit me. So that's fun. >> Oh lord. >> I appreciate you guys showing up. >> Outside, the police struggled with the grandmother to the point of losing control, shouting, "Walk like a human." >> Yeah, you're lying. Let me call my daughter, please. >> We'll let you call your daughter. >> No. when we get to the police department. >> Because you know what? You guys don't do all this and you don't let me call my daughter. It's all over with. I didn't do anything. >> No. 14, could you come help me get her out of the car? >> Get out of the car. Get out of Get out of the car. Get out of the car. Walk like a human. Knock it off. [Applause] >> Yes. This is the behavior of a grandmother, not a child. >> Act like a [ __ ] child. >> She was upstairs just passed out. >> Ow. I had a sterno rubber to wake her up. >> You need to wake her up and she did it. Josh, >> we were trying to see if she was having a medical issue. She's been drinking. She was just that drunk. She was passed out in the middle of the stairs. Okay, >> you will once you calm down. >> Prove it to me. All right, clean your car out. >> You guys want to talk to us? Yeah, talk to her real quick. >> Go ahead. I got this. >> He's right here. >> I'm just hanging out out here. >> No, we're not. >> Have you been drinking >> earlier? Are you drunk? >> No. I have issues. >> Like what? >> Mental issues. >> Mental issues. Okay. I'll go take >> Despite the chaos, the police remained patient and calm, carefully completing legal procedures, including a breathalyzer test. >> What's your name? >> Day of the week. >> Tuesday. >> 2024. >> Okay. Who's president? >> I don't know. >> You don't know the president right now? So, is there any reason why you were passed out or is there any mental medical reason why you were passed out upstairs or you had too much alcohol? >> No, I was coming downstairs. Who did that? >> Officer Kingdom said they find you. >> No, I was coming downstairs. I was coming downstairs. >> PBT. >> Would you be willing to blow into this so we know how what your alcohol level is? >> I'm not going to hurt nobody. Don't do that to me. I mean, you already you did bite that officer. >> I did not bite him. >> All right. Can you blow till it clicks? You got to blow harder. Blow like you're blowing up a balloon. Keep blowing. >> Can you please let these cuffs off? I'm not going to hurt anybody cuz that's not me. >> Okay. We didn't get a sample. That one didn't work. I'll take the cuffs off. >> Call my daughter. >> Yes, your daughter is at the house. >> They know my issues. They know what's wrong. They know what's wrong. If you think Audrey McLaren shattered every definition of family, meet the mother in Joliet. She proves that neglecting her children can happen again whenever the opportunity arises. >> Do me a favor. Sure. trans. >> On July 15th, 2022, in a residential area near a bar, a resident heard a child crying for over an hour from a parked car. Upon checking, she discovered two children left unattended without any adult supervision. How much did you have to drink today? >> I haven't had anything to drink. >> You haven't had anything to drink? >> No. Cuz it's very hard for me to deal with them by myself and my sister should know that. Okay. >> Her conflicting statements left the police with no choice but to be suspicious. >> What I don't understand though is why you'd leave the boys in the car if you're going to do other things. >> I wasn't doing any other things. I was checking on my boyfriend that was in the bar to make sure he wasn't talking to other women. >> Okay. Well, that's not what I'm being told. >> Okay. You're being told what she told you that I left my kids in the car. My sister >> Okay. I'm not worried about her. Okay. She called me because I'm not going to tell you what I was told. I was told.
