Loving a child is not just about words, but about responsibility. Yet in Illinois, Florida, and Ohio, reality tells a different story. >> The two girls were sharing the buckle. She was crying. She wasn't even seat belt today. >> Children were placed in unsafe situations. >> Come on, mommy. >> But she has a cold already. >> You're going to be under arrest. Okay. that it's illegal in the state of Florida. >> Three states, three stories, but one lesson. Adult negligence can turn an ordinary moment into a once left unattended in a car. A child in Illinois became the center of two conflicting statements. >> Was claiming her sister was supposed to be in the car with the baby, but the employees said there was no sister ever in the car. On April 15th, 2025 in Pin, Illinois, police responded to a nursing facility after receiving a report of a child unsupervised in a car. Upon arrival, they quickly assessed the situation, taking statements from staff members as well as from the mother to clarify what had happened. >> Oh, right here. >> Do we have any idea where this lady is? >> I took her out. She was crying. She wasn't even seat belted in, not in a base of the car seat or anything. >> Okay. Do we know where the driver is? >> I have no idea. >> Do they have to like sign in if people like visitor? >> I I'm one. >> Do you have anybody from >> They might have been in the line >> that might have a baby. >> That's me. >> That's you. >> Just assuming anybody cameras on. How long you been in here? >> I just met my sister was just sitting out there. >> Nobody's sitting in the car with your baby. >> Let me get her. >> So you're saying your sister is supposed to be out in the vehicle? Where did she go? >> That's what I'm trying to figure out. That's why I'm doing calling her ass now, but I'm not cussing that. >> What time did she's been out now? >> Because she was in here. >> That's why. Yeah. I didn't know what time her orientation started, but she >> It was supposed to start at 8:30. Yeah. >> She possibly been in here since 8:30. >> She got here a little late, but I mean, yeah, she's been here for a little bit. >> Is her sister in here? Maybe. >> No, she's not. >> Do you guys have cameras out there? >> No, that baby wasn't even in a base to that car. >> I see the base is on the ground in the car. And it's like secured behind it, but it wasn't through the base. >> There was there was nothing. There's nothing that can go through here cuz it's a base. Just thrown in. >> So what? >> Your baby wasn't strapped in. Not even on the base. >> She's not answering. >> She's not answering. >> My mom. My mom's at work. >> What was she doing here with you? >> No, I was filling out my uh information. >> Okay. And she was just riding along with you. >> Yeah. So, can I get her car seat? No, you're we're just going to hang out in here for now. >> For what? >> You can sit. You can sit if you guys are sick. >> No, I'm okay though. >> I just need to figure out what's going on and why this baby was in a vehicle unattended for who knows how long. >> No, cuz I literally y'all if they came here, I literally just walked out. >> She's been here since 5. >> No, I said I literally just walked out just left. You can ask that you >> No, I'm saying that I literally just walked from from my car after we did that little pit test. I'm saying I literally just >> orientation. >> You showed up for orientation about 5 miles. >> No, I'm saying I literally just went to my car when I just did the fit test after we got done doing the fit test and she was in there. Hello. >> The mother's statement and the staff's account were completely contradictory. In reality, the child had been left in an unsafe situation for an extended period of time. >> So, no, we just got here. We're in the beginning of it. One of the local you have a contact to a local case worker gave us a call. I'm at a nursing home. Mother of the child came here at about 8:30 this morning for her CNA orientation. Her probably about 8-month old baby in the car, claiming her sister was in the car with it. The employees here said the sister was never in the car with it. They went outside, happened to see the baby in the car. It was not secured in the car seat. So, they took the baby and brought it inside. So, the baby's been outside unattended for they said at least an hour, if not up to 4 hours. We don't feel comfortable just sending mom away with this baby right now. >> And you know that you can see y'all can see the camera cuz I told you I was going outside. No, that's fine. I'm not going the big time. >> Yeah, we're not doing this. You can just go back in there and I will talk to you if I need to. >> Let them know what time you got. >> No, it's fine. I don't need this. >> Heard you said >> talking. >> Knock it off. Hey, this is We're not doing this. Okay. >> You need to tell her that. >> No, I'm telling you. Sir, can you give her first seat so I can sit her in her first seat right here? >> Give me You're going to have to give me a few. >> You're fine. I was in here filling out my wuss and what's a supposed to been in the car with the baby, but she was like, "Can you come up here?" I just told you Liberty Village should be >> I if I had to guess, yeah, around 8 months or so, give or take. Maybe slightly younger. The employees took her out of the car and took her inside. Mom just happened to show up when we got here. So, I mean, doesn't appear in any distress. The base was on the seat, but it was not secured with the seat belt. The seat belt is buckled behind it, but not anywhere securing the base. The car seat was clipped into the base, but she was also not strapped in the car seat. So, neither the base was secured or she was not secured in the car seat. And then has been left out in the car unattended for at least an hour, possibly up to 4 hours. She's claiming her sister was supposed to be in the car with the baby, but the employees said there was no sister ever in the car. So, yeah, she grabbed the baby from the employee and is just holding it. There's other officers in there and the employees there. She's We are not allowing her to leave with the baby right now. We don't feel comfortable until we figure out talk to you guys and figure out what the plan is. >> The mother went on to give explanations that did not align with the facts. >> How long have you been inside of this building unattended from your vehicle? >> Unattended from my vehicle. 30 >> 30 minutes. I got here at 9:00, but we just took a break after we did the We just took a break after we did the the spit test thing and I literally just went to my car. >> So, you've been in your car since 9:00 and then you came in here? >> No, I came in here at 9:00 and you know, we take take a little break and fill out my orientation papers and I literally just went to my car. >> Okay. Just trying to get a hold of sister. >> Yeah, she's my just >> Where did she go? >> That's the I'm trying to figure out. I always want to get high. >> Is there in the car? Did she have we? >> No, I don't have >> cuz they mentioned the car smells like >> Yeah, I don't smoke. >> Did your sister have stuff in there or smoke? >> To my knowledge. I told her I have to go put on my Why are they saying the car smells like >> You don't smell it yourself, sir? I don't smoke. Y'all can test me everything. I don't smoke. >> So, does live with you or No, where she live at? >> Oh, I don't know where she stay at, but I asked her for me while I fill out my application for my job and she told me yes. >> You said that's your sister, right? >> Yeah. So yeah, she's going to get arrested and we're not [ __ ] me and Taylor McFee are like we're furious and we're like we're not [ __ ] sending this baby home with this lady. Okay, all right. I'll start medical and we'll get our way to the hospital and when they finally call me I'll tell them to meet us there but I'll give you I'll get her stuff. Can you respond medical here for a 4month old baby? Conscious breathing needs to be checked out. >> Given the child's condition, police had to request medical personnel to ensure safety and provide timely care. >> Probably an hour since 9 was never here. She now magically can't get home with sister. I'm very mad about it. If my siblings left my fourmonth old baby in the car, I'd be pretty pissed off. >> So, has she been in this building since 9:00? >> She went out and one time Angie said she was only out there for maybe a couple minutes, though. I'm assuming she went out there check on her baby. >> I was doing the orientation. She showed up about 5 or 10 after 9. She come in right after. >> They just need to check out the baby cuz we don't know how long it's been in the car. >> She needs to go to the hospital. She's been in the car for a few hours. >> She has not. Just went out there and checked on her and my sister was in the car with >> What time did you go out there and check on her? Your sister was in the car >> when y'all just came with with other officers just >> I said we literally just had a break and I had literally just went out there. >> We know it's been at least an hour so we just need to check the baby out. >> But nothing is wrong with her. >> I'm going to tell you now. We're taking protective custody of the baby for now so we can figure out what's going on. >> No, my mom is on her way. >> I don't care if your mom's on the way. You're an adult to me like that because you're not cooperating. I'm telling you how it's going to go now. They're going to evaluate the baby if the baby's being transported to the hospital for evaluation cuz you baby's been in the car for who knows how long. As far as we know, the baby's been in there since 9:00 a.m. this morning. It has not. >> Okay. If my sibling was in the car with the baby unattended, I'd be a whole lot more pissed off than you. >> I am. I've been calling her. What else did you have to do? >> After reviewing the situation from multiple angles, authorities proceeded to arrest the mother. >> But that doesn't according to this life of health. It's not on here. So look up life and health and find if she's in violation of a felony charge of that. >> All right. Yeah. I'll go hook her on the uh the felony. >> So she's still going to be >> and she's going to get both charges. >> You're going to charge her with both run it by command if you want just to make sure you're good on that. >> Oh yeah. I probably should say this. >> This is a really tough case. >> And phrase it as this is what I'm thinking. Don't ask what to do. >> You're going to be under arrest. Okay. You're under arrest for endangering the health and life of a child. Okay. I don't want to be rough. >> I'm not supposed to be >> Tasha. Tasha, do you have anything on you that's going to stick coke cut or poke me? >> Cash you in there. You good? >> Yeah. >> In the car, police explained custody rights and warned that DCF might take temporary custody. >> What we're doing is taking you to jail. They'll fingerprint photograph you and then you'll be released on an NTA. >> What's going on with my baby? >> She's going to the ER right now. Sounds like she's being held in protective custody because we don't know how long she was in the car. They're checking her over and make sure she's okay because paramedics seem to think that she was a little warm with the temperature outside. >> But she was No, she she has a a and I'm not cussing at you. So, but she has a cold already from us being outside this damn weather study constantly changing. So, that's not the reason why she's And once again, I'm not cussing at you. >> Oh, that's fine. >> Yeah, I get that. But you know what I'm saying? Don't don't make that be like she just so hot. I'm not saying that that's necessarily all that they're >> Yeah. Yeah. No, I'm just saying >> make sure that she's all good. >> But and I understand that, but she was not in thating car. How they trying to say it? Fouring hours. And once again, I'm not cussing at you. >> I get it. You're frustrated and I understand. >> When I leave here, would I be able to get her >> get the baby? Yeah. >> I think the baby will be taken into protective custody by DCF. >> Why is my mom up there? >> I can't answer those kind of questions cuz I have been here the entire time. So, I don't know what's going on at that. So, if I could answer those questions, I would 100% do it for you. But I don't know the answer. >> Yeah. Okay. >> So, who will I be able to talk to? Who do I talk to? >> So, there should be there should be an investigator that's going to be out there, a DCFS worker that will be up there as well here soon. Probably come give you information as soon as they're there. And she will go to jail. She'll be a release with a notice to appear. So, she'll need a ride back to the jail. Back up to the house. >> No, she could probably walk. >> It's a little bit of a walk. >> I mean, she she probably need to lose a little weight. Should have made me mad. Got me off work. though. Yeah. So, by the time she's done, they will probably have already talked to you and explained stuff to you or or figure out what's going on. >> The mother was arrested and held on charges of endangering the life of a child. Under Illinois law, this can carry 2 to 5 years in prison and a fine up to $25,000. The incident shows that supervising children is essential, especially in public, and following basic safety measures like car seats and seat belts is crucial. Illinois was just the beginning. Florida presented new challenges that required careful attention. >> Police, no. Please, please, please. >> On July 21st, 2024, Santa Rosa County police in Florida spotted an SUV speeding with four young children inside. They immediately pulled the vehicle over, but what followed turned a seemingly simple stop into a much more serious situation. >> Hello, how are you? Hey, I'm Deputy Lyn, San County Sheriff's Office. I want to make your acquaintance. My lieutenant here told me she stopped you for 95 and a 65. Does that sound about right? >> Yeah, but I was following the car in front of me. I don't understand. Like, >> well, then y'all were both doing 95 and a 65. >> It said it said 65 speed. >> Did your speedometer work? Okay. >> Yeah. >> What did it say? What did it say you were doing? >> I was just keeping up with traffic. >> So, when you were keeping up with traffic, what did it say you were doing speedwise? Did you look at it? >> I didn't look at it. Okay. All right. Don't worry. >> Hey, do me a favor. Would you mind step out with me real quick and talk at the front of her car over here? >> What's up, Demory? How you doing, man? >> Am I Am I going to jail or something? >> No. Just come over here and talk for me. Okay. You got shoes on. I'll make sure you understand those hot ass balls. Is there anything in that vehicle? I need to know about any marijuana after that. There's nothing in there. Why am I smelling odor of marijuana coming out of your vehicle? >> I don't know. >> Has there been marijuana in there? >> I just rented it earlier. >> Hold on. Hold up. Hold up. Stop. >> I just rented it earlier. >> Where's the marijuana at inside the vehicle? >> I don't know. >> I'm going to give you one opportunity to be honest with you before I take you to jail for possessing marijuana. Listen, listen to me. I'm telling you there's marijuana inside vehicle cuz I can smell it. Do you have a medical marijuana card? >> No, it was just a pin. >> There we go. Now we're being honest. >> Okay. >> Okay. So, listen to me. Where is the pen at inside me? >> Purse. I can grab it real quick. >> I don't want you to grab it real quick. I'm going to get it in just a second, but I'm going to search the remainder of that car. I'm not going to find anything else in there you shouldn't have on any. >> I'm right here. Listen to me. I'm not going to find anything in there you shouldn't have. Marijuana. >> I'm asking you to be honest with me cuz I'm going to search the car. Hold up and stop. [ __ ] Don't walk into traffic. >> I'm not standing on this grass right here. >> I just got a a blunt in the car. Okay, >> now we got a blunt and a pin. >> That's it. That's the two things. You can check. >> Well, you told me that was it just a second ago when you said just a pin. No, but I'm just scared. I'm just trying to let my kids do something for their birthday and it was >> So, let's start over with each other, okay? Cuz you haven't been honest with me yet. I don't want to take you to jail. I'm not >> I don't want to go to jail. >> So, listen to me right now then. Let's start over and let's be honest with each other. How you doing? I'm Deputy Lince County Sheriff's Office. I smell marijuana coming from inside your vehicle. Do you have a medical marijuana license? So, is there marijuana inside your vehicle? Yes. >> Where's the marijuana at inside your vehicle? >> I got it in the thing. It's in the count the little console. >> What kind of marijuana product is it that we're talking about in the console? >> Road blunt. That's it. >> What about the pin you were just telling me about? >> Before I left and I was just bringing it to where I was going and that's it. The pin. >> The real reason the mother was speeding began to emerge. >> So, a pen and a blunt. That's >> it. That's it. I'm not going to find any wrong. I'm not going to find anything else. Not going to find no pills. You shouldn't have any. >> No, I can grab everything. >> Whose little kids are these in the back seat? Why aren't they buckled up? >> See, or the two girls were sharing the buckle and we just >> Why you got two of them sharing one buckle? >> This is what they rented me. I didn't know. >> How many people you got in there total? I see you got the mor in front and who's in the back. >> The four kids in the bed. We're 15 minutes from my sister's house. We will stay in there. >> All right. Have you ever been in trouble before? >> No. >> Are you on papers, probation, community control, anything like that? Then listen to me. This is just as simple as this. If all you've got in there is a little bit of a blunt and you got a little bit of a pin and a Listen to me. Stop interrupting me. That's all you got in there is a little bit of a pin and a little bit of a blunt. Not an entirely huge deal. >> Now, this deputy, she might write you a citation for the speed or something like that, but listen to what I'm telling you. What I'm going to do is I'm going to search that vehicle. >> Yes, sir. >> Okay, >> I'll grab it for you. >> I need the little ones to step out and we can have them stand in the grass over here, but do and listen. >> Come here. I didn't tell you to walk away yet. >> I'm sorry. My >> Listen to me. Listen to me. >> I'm not trying to throw anxiety off. I want you to listen to me for a second. Do the little ones have shoes they can wear because there's fire ants and whatnot. >> So, let's put some tennis shoes or whatever we got on them. Let's have them stay in the grass, but I don't want them get eaten up by bugs. Okay. So, put the shoes on them first. Okay. >> You got shoes on. All right. Cool, man. Step on out for me, Deore. Come stand back here by my lieutenant for me, Demorian. >> Come stand right back here. Y'all got shoes on? All right, put your shoes on. I don't want you to get bitten up by no fire ants or nothing. All right. >> Tension rose as police search the vehicle. Charles, what >> you got brass knuckles for? >> It was a present. >> It's a present is considered a concealed weapon. >> Yeah. Can't have brass knuckles in Florida. >> Inside the car, police found items that required further legal checks. Combined with a Louisiana warrant, they immediately arrested the man. >> Go ahead and turn around for me, man. >> It's not his stuff. It's not >> I want you hold this mine. Turn around. Put your hand behind your back for me. >> The bag was mine. >> So the more I'm putting you in handcuffs right now, bud, cuz you got a warrant out of Louisiana. >> Why? >> Hold up. Listen to me. I'm going to explain it to you. Don't pull away from me though. You're going to wind up on the ground. You got a warrant out of Louisiana for a Was that was that what they said? >> Okay. What happened in just a second? >> What he said? >> Hang on one second. >> What did he do? I can't hear you. I'll explain it in just a second. He's got a warrant out of Louisiana. I believe they said agg, but I'll double check on that. >> What's that? >> Aggravated. >> That's just what it sounds like. Aggravated. Yeah, you can kind of say it that way. I'm going to let you have a seat in the back of my car for just a second. Okay. >> Yeah. Yeah. >> We'll just get you out of the heat for just I'm not trying to embarrass you on the side of the road and have you stand here in handcuffs. Okay. >> So, you just detained right now. So, what happens? Listen to me. What happens is you have a warrant out of Louisiana. We send a hit to Louisiana. >> Okay. The hit comes back either confirmed or they won't launch you. Okay. One of the two things, right? They're going to say, "Let him go. But we'll get them in a later time and date or they're going to say go ahead and send them to us. If they say go ahead and send them to us, we'll be taken to San Rosa County Jail. We'll go from there. If not, I'll let you go. You can deal with your warrant on a later date and time. Do you know what the warrants for? Do you recall? >> Can you Okay. Wait. All right. Can you say All right. Look what Okay. A a warrant for aggravated >> Mhm. police offer. >> Wait, what? >> I think they sent police officer. Here, let me have you. I'm I'm Look Give me a second, man. Try to try to just get >> Yeah, I'm going to figure it out, bud. But right now, like I said, you're being detained. You're not under arrest quite yet. You're being detained. I want you to sit down. All right, we'll get your information taken in a second. >> I don't know where none of that is. >> Your mom, right? >> Yes. >> Okay. What she's telling me is she that he has a warrant out of Louisiana. A full extradition warrant out of Louisiana, which means >> he got a ticket or something. >> No, it means he caught a criminal charge. >> Like, how did how did he get >> Has he been in trouble with law enforcement in Louisiana? >> I don't know. He He's He don't tell you nothing. >> No, he bounces back and forth with his friends in his >> Well, I'm here I'm here to tell you that got in some trouble, it sounds like, in Louisiana. He's got a warrant for his arrest for aggravated assault. I'm going to look at the exact specifics of that in just a second when I can look at the exact specifics of that. Meanwhile, we're going to deal with what we got sitting on your rooftop and then we'll come back and get you some more information in just a second. Okay, stand by. Yes, sir. >> A woman appeared, later identified as the mother's sister. Minutes later, she was also arrested for disorderly conduct and obstructing police work. >> Hey, here. Why are they searching the car? >> Who are you? >> I'm here. Don't worry. >> Who are you? >> Florida. >> Why are they searching her? >> Okay. You're not involved in this. So, I need you to go back to your vehicle. >> 23 last year. Probable cause. >> Go back to your vehicle or you can go to jail. >> It's illegal. >> Go back to your vehicle. >> No, it's not. Go back to your car. Go handcuff and go to jail. >> Betty, just go. >> All right. Just know it is illegal. >> Go back to your car. >> If you come back out here, I will take you to jail. >> What? >> Please. No. Please. Please. Please. >> Going to jail. Mhm. >> Please don't. >> I don't have Louis's number. >> You're good. Don't end that video. You illegally searching your car. Last year it was passed. Any smell of anything is not a probable cause of searching vehicle. And I got a lot of money to play. I will sue. >> If you are now under arrest for obstructing justice. >> Obstructing justice. But did I walk up and do I'm here to pick up kids. >> You're going to jail. Somebody else going to have to get kids. >> Hey Ela, >> I need my stuff. >> You pull away from me. One time you're going on the ground. Do you not pull away from me? >> I didn't pull away from you. Officer, >> you're pulling away from me right now. >> I need my phone to leave my key. Make sure the video did not end. I'm recording from my cage. I'm recording. >> I need another with a cage. I don't want to put them in the same one. >> So, I'm under arrest for not even stepping 10 foot near you. >> No, you're within 10 ft. You were in her face. >> You know, I have a video. >> You're going to jail >> and I have it all on video. >> That's excellent. So do I. >> Okay. >> No, please. >> No. I gave her fair warning several times. >> I've never even approached you. I was nowhere near you. >> You back up multiple times. >> I was never near you. >> You're going to jail. >> Let's go. Illegally searching her car. You do realize that probably >> you need to study up on your statutes. >> Pull it up right now on your phone. >> I'm not arguing it with you right now. >> Call out higher up. Ask him. >> That is a higher up. She's a lieutenant. >> She would know that it's illegal in the state of Florida. You cannot search a vehicle with probable cause anymore. >> You have no idea what you're talking about. >> Hey, y'all stand back over there by that car for me. >> They have the kids, guys. The kids out on side of the highway. I'm here to pick up the kids. Give me your phone. >> My phone is here to record my thing. >> Give me your phone. >> You are not. You know you're not allowed to take that. Yeah, I am because you're going to jail. I told that. Give me your keys. You're going to jail for obstructing justice. I've told you multiple times. I've never even stood near. >> I know. I am scared for my life and I would like to record this. I am scared for my life. I never I never even got 10 foot near him. All I did was walk up and ask why are they taking the video? >> It's not your business. >> They will. Show me 105 on him. And I got one more detained. I'm going to get you some 14 just a second. Sorry. Can I walk your car? Is that all right? I would like >> Oh, you guys want me back? Okay. I guess I'll put them together. I put them together. I don't know their relationship to each other. >> It's my sister and I'm here to pick up the kids. I have her sister. That's not Let's go for a walk. >> I like my belongings. >> Let's go for a walk. >> Turn off my emergency light. I have to turn everything off. >> Are you going to keep pushing against me and wind up on the ground? >> Listen to the deputies. >> Do you have anything on you that's going to get you in trouble when you get to jail? >> No. Police also check both individuals to ensure nothing was concealed and to keep the children and the scene safe. >> You have a record and you're doing all of this. >> You did this. You walked up on us and refused to leave. >> I asked her a question on what was going on and you harassed me. >> Do you have anything on you that's going to poke me? >> No, ma'am. I cannot wait for this case. This is about to be a money maker for me. I got lots of petty money. This is insane. >> Arresting someone with zero zero charges, anything. That doesn't mean you're not committing a crime currently. >> We have it on video. >> I know we do. >> Yeah, I know it several. You walked up to me. She good >> and grabbed me. >> You have a world. >> Can I please turn off the lights on my vehicle? >> Yeah, we'll take care of that. Go ahead and sit down. >> Watch your head when you step in. >> Hey, Morgan. Step back out with me. >> Can you help me? >> So, yeah. Swing your feet around. No, no, look. Look. Switch around. Your feet got to come first. All right. So, here's the deal. They confirmed your warrant. They confirmed your warrant. So, they are going to extradite. So, at this point, I'm going to empty your pockets of whatever you got on you. Okay. [Applause] >> Just chill out, man. It's all right. >> All right. Look, you got four coins in your pocket right there. That's going to go with that cash you had on you. My dog ear out your pockets. >> It's crazy. >> It is crazy, isn't it? One more coin. That's a total of five coins along with the paper money you got in the front. Don't worry, nothing else on you. No, sir. >> Nothing's going to get you in trouble when you're introduced into jail. Anything in your shoes? >> I ain't going to make you come over here, man. There's a hands out here. But if you want to, I'm just giving you the opportunity to be honest. Step away from me. All right. Slip them back on if you can. Yes, you can. So, you're going to be placed under arrest and you're going to go to jail today for your warrant out of Louisiana. You don't have any charges with me. >> I'm going to explain to you in just a second as soon as I get a chance. Okay. I'm going to sit down. I'm going to look at the screen. You look like you and I are going to look at the screen together here in just a second.
