Why is it always something with you, Alva? >> Why am I still sitting here? >> I JUST EXPLAINED IT TO YOU. >> DON'T DRIVE ME. I'M [screaming] A GIRL. I'M PREGNANT. DON'T DO THAT WITH US. >> A PRETTY accurate description of policing is that you're going to encounter several people who are having the worst day of their life. And some of them are going to attempt to make the officer have the worst day of his or her life. And part of that process is yelling at the officer at the top of their lungs and then getting into a physical altercation. This is one of those. >> Yes, she did. >> Here. Here. Just back up. Back up. Back up. Go back there. I'll talk to you guys in a second, okay? >> Yeah. You got to give me my money. >> Yeah. >> What's going on? >> I'm pregnant. >> Oh, Jesus, Alva. >> Give me my money, please. Come to my window, please. Please, sir. >> Why is it always something with you, Alva? >> I don't know, bro. I don't know, bro. I don't know. >> I'm not your bro. We've been over this. >> It's always something with you, Alva. >> Yeah, it can always be something. >> Can you turn your windshield wipers off? >> The repeat customer in policing, this is a very common. I'm looking at this young lady, it sounds very, very familiar to me. Every officer knows that there's a person that you end up having to respond to several times during your career and sometimes multiple times in the same shift. Some people call it the shift subscriber and it's never really their fault and it's really frustrating to deal with people who act in this manner. >> I am your father. >> Can you stop? Get in the car, Alva. >> Yeah. >> Get in the car, Alva. Shut up and get in the car, Alva. >> I don't know, bro. I don't know. >> Shut your door. Shut your car door. >> This is a joke, bro. >> Is your Is your car in park? >> Yes, it is. >> Can you just wait here for a minute? Alva, I'll come back and talk to you when you calm down. Who here is messing with Alva? >> I don't know anybody before she You see my windshield? She broke that. >> She broke your windshield? Why did she do that? >> Uh because she's she's delusional. >> She She thought she think I was doing something with her. This is my cousin's girlfriend. >> Are you and Alva together? >> No, she pregnant right now. >> Okay. >> So, she thought it was something that she probably breaks her when she Those two locks right there. >> Well, how they end up back over there? >> Cuz we took them out the window. >> locked up the car with it. Then she was talking about coming to mess it up again, so I had to pull it in the garage. We got cameras right here at that house. He said he had sent me the videotape. Then she called me again and said she was about to come and bust my truck windows out right here. So, basically this whole thing and since she got here, she tried to get her money back. Then she started doing all this this and that. That's what happened. I I I just didn't want my getting broke, so I pulled back there cuz she literally she like, "I'm about to come break your I pull up. She coming around the corner >> living at her mom's? With who? No, you're not. >> No, no. But you have to pay for it. >> No, you're not. >> Yes, okay, well, I got to go. You can come talk to me or I GOT TO GO. I'M NOT BEING ARRESTED. I'M NOT BEING DETAINED, SO I HAVE TO GO. GIVE ME MY MONEY. GIVE ME MY MONEY. >> YES. >> TASHA, give me my money. >> In all the years you've dealt with me, when have you telling me what to do ever worked? >> I'm not trying to tell you what to do. >> No, you are. >> Okay, I apologize. I'll sit here and listen to you. I understand. I admit my mistakes. >> of the car and let's talk. >> I don't want to get out of the car. Can we just talk like this? >> Get out of the car and let's talk. You were already out of the car screaming and yelling at me. >> Right. It's I'm not going to say it doesn't matter. I'm just trying to get the >> How the window get broken? >> I DON'T KNOW THEM. IT'S THE right there in the GRAY JOGGING SUIT. >> OKAY, don't say that again. >> I'm sorry. The guy in the gray jogging suit is my baby dad. >> Yeah. >> Okay? I don't know nobody else than the guy in the black one. He's the brother. I don't know nobody else over there. >> Okay. >> Okay? And I wasn't over here. I was with her. We were at the grocery store. I've been with her son. I left my baby dad's house yesterday night. He dropped me off. I have messages. >> I don't need all that. How did window get broken? >> I I don't know her. I have no idea. >> Why is every single one of them saying you broke the window? >> No one was over there. They're going to team up against me. >> So when I go watch this video, cuz apparently one of the neighbors has video and so that I can watch it. >> WATCH THE VIDEO. WATCH THE VIDEO, SIR. GO AHEAD. >> YOU'RE not going to be a liar. >> I'm not trying to be like that. >> Why Why is it like this every time I deal with you? >> Because, bro, I'm not your bro. I'm a up individual, if that's what you call it. >> Well, you can't stay out of trouble. >> Yes, I can. I've been out of trouble. >> Yeah, okay. >> Since Since I turned 18, my my record's clean. I have not been in trouble, so. >> But you're always dealt up in drama. >> Okay, this kind of call, incredibly common, the suspected cheating and someone breaks out a window on the vehicle. The cheating obviously is not a crime that police can enforce, but it causes a lot of domestic-type situations and the busting out of the window is definitely a crime in nearly every jurisdiction I know. Melissa's destruction of private property, damage to vehicle, I mean, every jurisdiction's going to have a different charge for it, but let's talk about the crime. The value of the window's going to matter and having a witness because this could potentially be a misdemeanor not committed in the presence of an officer. So the investigation has to really point directly to the person who did it. Video, eyewitnesses, all those things are going to matter going forward. >> And it's Alva. It's You're always dealt up in some >> I know. Just I'm not trying to use it as an excuse. It's cuz I don't know. I'm not going to make no excuses. >> Thought you were moving out of state. >> I did. I moved to Indiana for a minute. >> Well, why'd you come back? >> Cuz I had kids here. I I don't know that >> Stop. >> I don't know that >> Alva, stop. Stop. >> No, because I'm not about to keep on getting blamed for something and go watch the video. Like, I'm not about to keep getting blamed for something I didn't do, period, point blank. Like >> When has you talking to me this way ever gone your way? >> It It doesn't get me nowhere. I DON'T CARE. I DON'T CARE. I DON'T CARE. LIKE, I DON'T CARE. LIKE, I don't care. Like, it's up. I don't care, bro. I should be here in jail, to be honest, bro. I don't I don't want to be here, like >> Then why do you keep coming back? >> I don't know. I got kids to take care of. Literally. That no one else will take care of. So, it's my responsibility. >> They're your children. Who do you want to take care of them? >> So, I take care of them. I don't >> They're your children. Yes, you're supposed to take care of them. >> That's why you told me why do I come back? I'm telling you why I come back. To take care of my children. You asked me a question, I answered. >> God, you are such a smart ass. Every time I deal with you, you are such a smart ass. Even the times I've helped you, you've been nothing but a smart ass to me. >> You've not been well. I'm not going to say you never helped me. All right. >> Yeah, cuz you know that's a lie. >> I hate myself. I know. I'm just a disappointment. I don't know why I'm like this. >> You still living with your mom? >> No. >> Where are you living? >> I live over there on >> With who? >> What do you mean with who? >> With who? >> My brother. >> Okay. >> Trying to act tough. Used to get her ass beat at Want to act tough as >> Up. >> Yeah. >> What up? >> Want to act tough as Used to get her ass beat that the >> Find out >> Literally. Want to act tough. >> Can you shut up? >> Cuz she is though. Like let's be real. What am I waiting here for? >> They know. They know. Because right now I'm investigating a possible crime where you broke a window. So, you are not free to go. >> Okay, so >> And it is a courtesy I have not put you in handcuffs. While I investigate this. >> Okay, well what you want to put me in handcuffs? Like is that what you're saying? >> I don't Why are you always such a smart ASS? >> BECAUSE LIKE WHY AM I STILL SITTING HERE? >> I JUST EXPLAINED IT TO YOU. YOU WANT TO GET LOUD? I'LL GET LOUD. >> I DON'T CARE ABOUT NONE OF THAT I'M used to that I DON'T CARE. >> NO YOU'RE USED TO IT. >> YES, I DON'T CARE. >> BECAUSE YOU CAN'T STAY OUT OF TROUBLE. >> CARE. >> YOU THINK YOU GOT IT ALL FIGURED OUT. >> I KNOW I DON'T. IT'S THE DIFFERENCE. I KNOW I DON'T. >> GET OUT OF THE CAR. >> OKAY, so this officer has a history with this young lady here. And he's actually helped her by both of their admission. But my question is, is the language and the yelling and stooping to her level helping? And is this the professional manner that the officer wants to portray himself? Again, his career, his call. I'm here to help young aspiring officers look at other options of interacting with people because are the optics good? If someone just goes by and captures the officer yelling and screaming at her like that and using this language, is it going to help him in his career? And again, 72° talking to you on YouTube. But I've had these kinds of situations. And this is the question. Does stooping to the level of the person who's acting immature help the situation? That has to be the question. And is the degree of professionalism that you're putting into it matching what your department standard is? >> All right, get out of the car. I'm dragging you out of the car. >> out of the car for? >> Because you're under arrest. >> Are you being serious? Are you >> I'm 100% serious. >> Can I at least call my family and tell them >> You can call them when you're booked in. >> Are you being serious? Are you >> Let's go. Let's go. >> You're being serious? Are you >> Yes. Get out of the car. >> Okay, yes, sir. But >> Get out of the car. I'm dragging you out of the car. >> Oh, take my wallet, please. Make sure it gets to my house safe. It has all my money. Yes, can you please make sure my stuff gets to it safe? Right here. >> Let's go. Nope, give me YOUR PHONE. >> GO AHEAD. GET OFF OF ME. TAKE THIS Get off of me. LET GO. LET OH, DON'T DRAG ME. I WILL GO. I'M PREGNANT. >> STOP. [screaming] STOP. KNOCK IT OFF. KNOCK IT OFF. >> I'M PREGNANT. YOU DON'T DO THAT WEIRD ASS LET GO OF ME. OFF OF ME. GET OFF OF ME. LET GO OF ME. GET OFF OF ME, REALLY. >> STOP. >> I GOT PREGNANT AS >> THEN STOP FIGHTING US. NOW. 10-46 GET US A 32 also. Stop. ridiculous, all right. Every >> Can you please let put in and get off my like that, my stomach is leaning to the right. Please, I'm not trying to be ignorant. >> Sit up. Stay down. This is getting ridiculous. Do you understand me? This is getting stupid. Now you're definitely going to jail. >> But I was going regardless. Like, get the off OF ME, BRO. >> GET IN THE CAR. >> I GOT YOU, BRO. WHY DO I HAVE TO I REALLY >> GO GET ALL THEIR INFO. I'M SENDING HER FOR THE criminal damage. >> In custody-ish, cuz she's not handcuffed and she's still emotionally very, very hyped up. Emotion and reason. We can see that her emotion is super duper high and she's not being reasonable. As the officer, we have to be very careful that we don't allow our emotion to become involved and I have made this mistake and that's how come I'm sharing it with you. Because there are other options when we see a person hyped up like this. Could we potentially say, "Allah, take a deep breath. You're not making any sense. You're pregnant right now. Let's focus on your baby. Take a deep breath." Because a lot of what she's doing is, in my opinion, performative for the other people that are around. And getting her to lock in on us as the professional and maintaining the presence and bearing of a professional while we are interacting with her in hopes that she matches. We could always go to where we got to go or we can grab a person, snatch a person. But a person who considers pregnant, that's almost just like holding a baby. So, I'm not saying you can't take a person to custody who is pregnant, but matching their energy with this wildness and everything can create challenges. This is a segment of a body cam video. I'm not there. My goal here is a similar type situation and an officer has other options on their tool belt to speak to a person to kind of calm them down and de-escalate it while we maintain our professional bearing is very helpful. >> Anybody see her do it? >> No. >> All right. What's the dude's name? >> His sister lives right here in this first apartment. She just came out and said he at work. So, if you need any information about him, it's not going to not the gray door, but the one with the screen. >> Hi. So, your brother lives there? >> my brother lives there. He's at work. He called me and he was like, "Why are the police walking up to my door?" I'm like, "Probably because they asked earlier if I'd seen anything." I'm like, "Well, my brother's got cameras that face right down here." So, he's at work. He's going to go through it and look and going to send me whatever. >> Okay. >> So. >> All right, perfect. I appreciate it. Thank you. >> Yep. Good luck. >> I will It gets to the point I have to yell at you because you do not listen to anything I say. I can >> Look, I'M TALKING TO YOU. >> I CANNOT HAVE A NORMAL conversation with you ever. >> Do you hear me, sir? >> No, because you're screaming and yelling when I'm trying to talk to you again. This is why IT TURNS INTO A SHOUTING MATCH BETWEEN you and I every single time. Every time I talked to you till I was blue in the face when you were juvenile. You don't care. You do your own thing. And then when you get in trouble, this is what you do every time. It never changes. >> Okay. Thanks. Thanks. >> For 14 services. >> Excuse me, sir. >> I will I'm not talking to you right now. >> Oh my god, I got to fix this. My daughter is okay. Can you please do me a favor? >> Who has your daughter? >> My My daughter is with her mom, but I need to make sure she gets to my house. >> With Huda? >> No, no, not with Huda. I'm trying to make sure she gets to Huda's safe. >> Stop yelling at me. >> Will you please listen? Can you please listen to me, sir? Sir, can you just please calm down? >> I have things I have to do first. >> I need to make sure my daughter >> Okay, you need to wait for a moment. Your daughter is safe. You need to wait a moment. I will this would have been real simple. You'd have got a summons for criminal You'd have got Shut up and listen. You'd have got a summons for criminal damage and I'd have sent you on your way. But you, in all your wisdom, like you always do, you fight us because you think that's going to go your way. >> It's never going to go my way. >> No, it's not. So, I don't understand why you do it every time. Cuz now you just get more charges. >> I know I know. >> The officer's making a really good point. It goes the same way every time. But if we're yelling back and forth, then our method might possibly shift to something else. And again, this is just constructive to see because I made it past the 20-something year mark, and I want other officers to having stress every single shift when other people yell and scream at us, it just creates more stress and drama in our own lives. Maybe we just ignore them. Vent out inside the back of the police car. What's going to happen is going to happen. Is there any need to get our blood pressure up as well? Just a point. >> I want to quote my mother, please. >> Not yet. I told you I will let you when I allow you to do it. You are under arrest. You are on my time now. Do you understand, Allah? Why did you even come over here today? >> There's no reason to even talk to you anymore. I'm sorry. I'm not trying to be a There's no reason to even talk to you anymore. >> Hi. >> Hello. How are you doing? >> Did you guys see anything? >> I see deals going on 24/7. And that A punk in the gray right there, he's the main guy selling. 24/7 I get I'm getting ready to go to work here in a couple minutes. I get off work at 2:00 in the morning. He's out here dealing. All all day long, all night long, he's out here dealing. >> Well, did you see anybody >> Yeah. >> Did you see anybody actually do it? >> No. That's his second girlfriend, and the first girlfriend, she got her back window busted out with a big with a big rock. Matter of fact, the rock was over there, but it's gone now. >> Yeah, there's two rocks sitting there. >> We [clears throat] have a nice neighborhood except for that apartment right here. 24/7, it's nothing but around here. This this This is a nice neighborhood except for that >> Yeah, I agree. But the more more you call, the more complaints that we get, you know, we can start making a nuisance complaint and hopefully get them out. >> Yeah. >> Okay. Thank you. >> All right. You're welcome. >> Very common when you canvassing for witnesses that they'll mention that there's a challenge that you have with one apartment or one house on the street, and they're dealing illegal pharmaceuticals or have gang members at the house. and you have to follow up on that. Like you would get that information as well while you conduct this primary investigation you have here. Pass that information on to another shift, document everything you can, maybe pass it off to the narcotics if it's a narcotics related thing, pass it off to gangs if it's a gang related thing. But it's important and this happens very, very frequently and sometimes those are really good cases to follow up on. The citizens rely upon us to do that and that's really important stuff. >> everything that happened again. >> Basically, my she was over last night. I took her home whatever. >> Mhm. >> I went out of town, come back this morning. She >> Like >> Where you at? I'm like I'm pulling up to the house like I just got back boom boom. >> Go in the house. >> This is my my cousin's girl. He in jail. So like they together so like she just called asked for a couple dollars. She came over last but I smoke like so I'm going to be honest with you. >> Yeah, yeah. >> So she came in she like "Where my ass?" Boom. She with her my all right whatever. I just got back. Sit here and go to sleep like >> Yeah. >> She come blowing me up like "Oh, you over there with that she your cousin's I'm about to everything up. Just know you made their bed. You got to lay in it." Lies and Blah blah blah. I'm like all right man. I'm I got time for you. I'm like I just got off the road. I'm about to go to sleep. >> Yeah. >> She was sitting in there. We come out go to leave. Bricks on top of the window. You feel me? She threw the brick through the window. >> Did you see her throw the brick? >> No, but I soon as I came soon as I came out I asked her girl that live next to me cuz her brother live right there with the cameras. >> Mhm. >> But he at work. So she told me like if you need to get the cameras everything. >> anybody see her throw those through the car window? >> I was asking. They They said they heard something but they wasn't looking. But the girl girl told me like the camera points gets all the way down the street so like >> Did you see her throw the bricks there? >> No. >> We was in the house. Came out to leave. Bricks was in >> You guys told me over here it was Olive that did it though. >> It >> It was her. >> She called like she called us >> said it herself. Like >> She like when she was on the phone with the cops like she was like I'm Like she like I'll pay you back. Yeah, I did it. But I was just scared. What do you want? Like and I'm like it's not about paying us back. It's like why did you do it in the first place? >> We're not going to charge you with the criminal damage. How's that sound? Okay, but we are going to charge you with resisting arrest and disorderly conduct. Yeah, and after talking to my supervisor, we decided we're not going to charge you with that because the witnesses aren't credible anymore. It That's it. They're just not credible. I'm not going to get into a whole conversation about it. >> So, you don't have video at the time of the initial investigation which is very common cuz sometimes people have to retrieve it and you don't have the good witnesses, then you can't book on that case because you don't have the elements to the crime. >> You're lucky you're not being hit with a felony for kicking that female officer in the face. Yes, you did and you know you did, Ala. In this In this it is ridiculous. Because I'm No, it was when you were down and kicking your feet. Because this is getting to be Ala, if I had it my way, I would slap you with a felony and ship your ass to the jail. You still live with your mom? Just be honest with me. Because I have to take you home now. That car drove off and I am not drive Stop, Ala. Ala, NO YOU ARE NOT. I AM NOT ALA. THEN I WILL DRIVE YOU HOME. CUZ HERE'S THE reason you are not going to walk. I'm not letting you out of my car here because you're going to go right back there and cause problems. Ala, I've no Ala, I've known you for 7 years. >> [screaming] >> You don't believe me. why do you continue to yell at me? If you continue to yell and scream, I'm just going to get out of the car and you're going to be here longer because you don't leave until I'm done doing my paperwork. But, I'm not going to sit here while you scream and yell at me. >> You don't believe me either. >> I can't finish my paperwork cuz you're screaming at me. >> I can walk home. >> Ala, I am not letting you out in front of this house. I will >> Let me out out the street around the corner, bro. I will Like let me I got to go TO WORK. I GOT TO DO. I'M NOT COMING BACK HERE. ON MY DEAD ASS DAD, THAT thing sleeps me under his grave. Disappoints me. >> When you're done yelling and screaming, I'll finish my paperwork. >> Get out of the car. Great move because the frustration was very clear and from the officer when he saw that he had his repeat customer shift subscriber Ala. As you know that I do not speak disparagingly [music] of anyone in the video, officer or suspect, but her voice and her actions were quite annoying to even the most calm person. And this officer has dealt with her for years by both of their account. To protect yourself from the officer perspective, getting out of the car and walking away was one of the wisest things that he could have done because she's going to eventually chill out and he doesn't have to listen to it. Goes back and does his paperwork. And understand, not only does he have to deal with it on this call, but he might have three or four more of the same type of situation for the rest of his shift. And then guess [music] what? As officers, we have lives where there are frustrating things in our own lives that we have to deal with. It's a very, very challenging career path to take and that is a word of caution for those who decide to [music] enter into it, but it's also very fulfilling. And this young lady, 18 years old and it looks like she's pregnant and has two kids already. And the charges we saw were resisting and the disorderly conduct. This original video, it was viewed almost two million times and it looks like in the original video, it says that they got video evidence that she actually did break out the window and she was ultimately charged with that. I think about her the kids, these three kids that this woman has, what their lives are going to end up. I hope that she makes a change and I think that the officer legitimately cared. His frustration was very apparent and in policing when your emotion and frustration becomes apparent, it's possible that your professionalism and your tactics and tools that you utilize can sway. Not saying that that's what happened with him, but it's a line that you have to be very careful not to cross. And this is a perfect time to segue into our giveaway for the one-year anniversary for the Sergeant Curtis channel. If you're an officer in a department with less than 100 officers, you're eligible. All you have to do is submit a video with your oath of office and what it means to you going forward. The specifics of the contest are pinned in the community section of the channel. The winner will be sent to the International Association Chiefs of Police Conference, one of the premier conferences in the country that goes on annually.
