You are suspended with a warrant for your arrest. >> I am? >> The raccoon has a pipe. >> Has what? >> Oh, there's no He's trying to smoke it. >> Your raccoon gave you away. >> No. >> Uh yeah. >> Policing is the one career field where nearly every single day you can go home and say, "You're not going to believe what happened to me at work today." Most of the time it involves some major crime or a foot pursuit or a chase, but very rarely and almost never is it that you're telling a story about finding a raccoon inside of a vehicle holding a pipe used to smoke an illegal substance that rhymes with Seth. This is one of those. >> Hi, how are you doing today? I'm Officer Brandon Springfield Township Police Department. >> Okay, Savage Savage dogs. How are you? >> Um so, the reason I stopped you is you are you are suspended with a warrant for your arrest. >> I am? >> So, do me a favor, turn off the car, put the keys up on the dash. >> Okay, can my dad come get I got insurance and >> to We're going to figure >> Okay, this is >> I copy. >> Okay, let me Can I roll it Can you open my door though? >> One second here. Just do as I say. Just put the keys up I got you. So, >> I can drive away. Yeah. >> Who's that? >> That's Ricky, little Ricky. He told me he was walking up here cuz we we just came from Walmart. >> you. Well, I saw I was going to say I saw you over there. >> Yeah. Hey buddy. >> Well, little Ricky, do you What Your name Ricky? >> Yeah, that's that's my friend. >> like this because it showcases a lot of different areas an officer needs to direct their attention. So, first we got the driver that you have to focus on every time that you conduct a stop. Then you have the passenger that you have to focus on. So, there you have two areas that you have to focus on. And then in this vehicle, you've got the dogs and we don't know if they're friendly or not, but you have dogs that you have to focus on. And then you got this other guy, Ricky. So, that's easily four, potentially five different things that you have to focus on all at once and you know that this person that you already mentioned that they have a warrant and you're going to have to take them into custody. And this guy, Ricky, is a little weird because if we walk by the car and didn't acknowledge that he was with them and he still has his hands in his pocket. So, that's a no-no. >> This is your friend? Are you with him? You like trying to ride with him? >> He had >> I don't know. I was just out here. >> Okay. Do me a favor, man. I got you. Do me a favor and just sit on the front of the If you want to, you can. I don't care. >> You know. >> But, do me a favor, man. Just step out of the vehicle. >> Yes, I will. Let me get all this stuff here. >> Is that a raccoon? >> Yes. He's a rac- yes. >> We're going to do everything right here. So, just step out of the vehicle. >> got to open Okay. I got it. >> I have to open the >> Yes. >> There we go. Thank you. >> I think my money Wait. Don't let him get in my knee. Come here. Sorry, my car's trash. >> You're fun. All right. Do me a favor, just step back here. >> No problem. I have a warrant for my arrest state till I talked to uh Kyle up >> So, it's just Do me a favor, just turn around. I'm going to place you in cuffs. >> Okay. >> Just to detain you for that warrant and because you are suspended actively. So. >> Oh, I They I talked >> So, Kyle Goforth, PD does have an entered warrant for your arrest. >> I really I talked to them. I called them. >> a favor. We're going to walk back to my car up here. We're going to walk back to the >> Okay. What Can he roll the window Can my Is this an old climb out of my car? My dog jumps right out. >> Wolf, wolf, I will >> I just want you Please. >> No, I'm not going to do that. Is your dog friendly? >> Um he is, but yeah, he's like >> Okay. >> He had to be happy. >> So, who's that in the car with you? >> This is my mom. >> Your mom? >> right. Does she have a valid license? >> Um no. >> Okay. So, just do me a favor, have a seat. >> Okay, but my dad Okay. My dad me the car and I You know what? So, and he can come and drive I have insurance. >> Can your dad come pick your mom up? >> Um he'll come and take the car. I can't He can't with the animals. Can I call him and see? >> Wolf, get I'll grab your phone. Where's it at? >> Um it's right there in the front. >> Okay. All right. Just do me a favor, put your feet in the car. I got one right here. >> Cool. Awesome. You know what? I appreciate that. There it is, right here. Hey, y'all. It's okay. Here. >> Yeah, if you want to connect it to them. >> You want to go potty? Huh? >> All right. >> Is it okay that I We open up the door and I can take him out and I'll be >> That would be awesome. >> That way he's not uh Here. >> All right, one for me. If you just want to hang out at the front of the car with the dog, I appreciate you, sir. >> Thank you. >> I got you. Can you do me a favor and stand in front of me? I don't like when people are behind me. >> Okay, I'm >> I like how this officer operates in a lot of ways. He seems to be tactical in the ways that he's interacting and the things that he's saying. He's got good command presence and I like that he's making sure that the dogs are taken care of. Because I mean, people who have dogs, they matter to them and to make sure the dogs aren't going through any stress. They didn't do anything wrong. He's making sure the dogs are in a safe space. I like that. So again, we got the politeness, the command presence, and tactical. All those things can occur at the same exact time. Very good stuff. >> Ma'am, can you do me a favor? Do you have a phone that works? >> Yes. >> Can you call for a ride? >> Can I call for a ride? >> For you and the animals and him if he needs one. >> Oh. >> Cuz I I'm towing this car. >> You're towing >> Yes, ma'am. She has a warrant for driving under suspension. She's suspended. She's not supposed to be on the roadway whatsoever. And this road And this car is very unsafe to be operating on the on the road. I'm looking at a wooden fence up here. Mesh, she has a makeup mirror. Yeah, she has a makeup mirror as a side mirror, too. >> Incredibly creative on how they're making this vehicle work. I've seen a lot of different things. If you watched my cops episode, that Carlos convertible where they cut the car and made it into a convertible. But again, they're doing the thing and they're making it work. But this car should not be on the road. >> Not valid either. So, I mean, you got three non-valid drivers. I'm not letting this car go. It It has to be towed. Okay? So, at the bare minimum, she's getting a ticket. At most, she's going to Calico Falls jail. Okay? Can you do me a favor, ma'am? Are you able to hop out of the vehicle or do you need help or anything? >> I can get out, yes. >> Okay. So, if you want to do me a favor and just hop out. >> What What if I could call her sister? >> No, just just hop out of the vehicle. And then here's your identification bag. >> Thank you. It's family. >> We need the dogs to get over here. >> I'll get >> Is there a Is there a leash for the other dog? >> Um >> I I have to Let me stop and look for >> Okay. Well, just hop out for right now. If you can do me a favor and stand over here with your friend and start calling for a ride for you and the groceries and the animals. >> So, when we tow vehicles, we have to complete an impound report and we have to document all the things that are inside of the vehicle to make sure that no one reports anything missing that was supposed to be there and to see if there's anything dangerous that's inside the vehicle. And you have to be meticulous about the different things that are inside the vehicle. And imagine what it must seem like to go inside of that vehicle and search that vehicle for all the different items that are inside of it. Not a fun task. >> Hey, do you have an extra leash in in your car? Do you have an extra leash in the car? Don't attack me, please. No. Just call for a ride for you and the animals, please. Or you guys can all walk and the animals can go to see to animal control. I'm giving you that option. Please just work with me as much as I'm working with you. >> You know, it's funny, officers, on search like that with the vehicle with all of that stuff inside of there and all those different animals, not a bad idea to put a mask on. You can breathe in some really, really nasty stuff, especially if you have allergies like I do. It could be a serious challenge. >> Well, she always gets excited. >> Well, then I suggest you If you don't want me opening the door and having it run out, I I suggest you taking it cuz I need to get in this car. >> Um Can I see if I can find a lea- another leash in here? >> Where would it be at if you had a best guess? >> Let me think. >> How did you guys get it in the car? >> He's been in the car. He's been in her car. >> Of course. >> Okay. Oh my god. She's looking for a leash for the raccoon. She said that the raccoon's been living in the car. >> I can't breathe. >> Let's just hurry this up cuz I I don't We're about to get poured on unless it So, unless you want to be sitting outside in the rain with the raccoon and a dog, how far away is your dad? >> He's in his office, but he's just getting home. Over by the Goodyear Blimp Hangar. >> Oh. Hey. >> What? >> I SHOULDN'T HAVE COME HERE. >> HELLO. >> The raccoon has a herb pipe. >> As what? >> Oh my god. >> herb pipe. >> You got to be >> He's playing with the pipe right now. No, don't reach for it. That's evidence now. >> Oh, I don't want him to have that. >> Well, I'm That's why I'm going to do it. >> Hey, buddy. >> Huh? >> It's okay. >> Okay, you're on honest. He'll be here in 2 minutes. I'm right across from my office. >> So, what that is? >> A few minutes. >> Yeah. This is what she's smoking >> Okay. >> The raccoon's playing with the pipe. >> All right. >> Oh, there's no way. He's trying to smoke it. >> All right. [laughter] Thanks. >> There's no way. All right. All right, enough fun and games. Here. >> You good? >> Holy hell. >> Huh? >> [laughter] >> Yeah, he's on his way here. >> All right, keep an eye as she was trying to take the pipe out of the car. Just keep an eye on her real quick. All right, well, you your raccoon gave you away. >> Oh, that No. >> Uh yeah. >> to god it's not mine. You can test me. >> Ma'am, it was in the driver's seat. The raccoon literally was playing with it. It was in the driver's seat. It was in a sheet's bag in the driver's seat. >> bag? >> In the driver's seat. >> Okay, I was a cop over 20 years in Las Vegas and I've seen a whole lot of things, but I have never ever seen a raccoon recover a pipe or attempt to do whatever it was doing with that pipe that's utilized for smoking Seth. In policing, these kinds of things happen and if you get caught because the raccoon recovers it, that was just your day to go. It's just really interesting the types of things that can happen. But there's something very interesting and educational that I want to share with you from this. If you look, there are two pipes. You'll see a pipe that's unused and a pipe that is used with a burnt residue. So, when you book a person for a pipe in most jurisdictions, you have to document that there's burnt residue in it. A clean new pipe like that in many jurisdictions is not going to be illegal. It's a glass pipe in some jurisdictions maybe it is, but it's the burnt residue in most jurisdictions which makes it meet the elements of being the paraphernalia. Not all jurisdictions, but in some and in most that I've interacted with, the burnt residue is one of the elements that you definitely want to document inside of your report. >> She was pretty adamant about this bag. So, I'm assuming this is probably where where it's going to be. Yeah. Tie. I got it. It's right here. 247 radio. We're going to have felony charges brought on. Okay, you are under arrest for felony possession of narcotics. That was in this bag. There's like three or four bags. >> Oh my god. >> So, you you are you are getting charged. >> god. I got to go. Hey, sir. >> Yes. >> Okay, how would I like break it? I mean, cuz of course they're >> Well, you're going to you're going to go to court, but it's in your car in the driver's seat. So, you're >> do that. Cuz he was he was left over there in the car. Lord, and I was trying to pick up my groceries and stuff that was over there cuz Ricky was in there. >> Well, you described the bag that the pipes were in. So, I'm it's reasonable to believe that you knew what was in this bag. >> I didn't. He just told me to pick it up. And you know what? If I would have known that, I would have probably thrown it out the window. >> Okay. So, you also have a history of narcotic possession. >> and I have been sober since Sky went >> Uh looks like me I from the just the look of it, it looks like two to three, but there's more bags underneath the paper towels. >> who? So, one Kaga Falls. >> I mean >> Well, it's Some Some Some county's coming down either way. Is this your dad right here, sir? >> Uh he's in the he's in the work van. The white work van? >> No. >> No. >> No, I was asking that. Your dad knows to look for the police cars, right? >> Yeah, I told him. >> Okay. I got that. >> No, here he is. Dad, Jeff. Hi. >> This is your dad right here? >> Yeah, this is him. >> Perfect. Do you have the carrier Do you have the carrier shirt? Can you grab that real quick? Thank you. >> Here. >> It's like a race against time. >> And you want Karen. >> That's me. That one will load the raccoon on the We're going to have you guys load the raccoon on the passenger side. >> Okay. Here. >> Hey, buddy. This thing is freaking cute, though. >> I'm going to have a hard time probably with this, but at least I got something to put him in. >> Just Let's hurry this up. I don't really want to be out here much longer. >> Okay, so I want to talk about something as far as time, and a lot of people who watch don't have a lot of understanding about how this booking process goes. In most jurisdictions, it's about the same, and I'm just going to do some guestimations from time frames, because it's important to kind of know how long something like this would take. So, when we look at this by the body cam, it looks like the stop was about at around 7:16 in the evening, and now we're at about 7:52. If we look at this stop, what I see so far, we got the stop, which is going to take over an hour with all of the stuff that has to be done. You have to impound that vehicle. Likely will be another officer, and that's going to take a significant amount of time. So, we're over a couple of hours right there. Then, you have to test a legal pharmaceutical that you found, and then you have to do all of your reporting. So, you're talking about at least 3 to 4 hours potentially off the street for this officer for this circumstance, and if you figure they work a 10 or an 8-hour shift, you can imagine how the workload becomes a bit stacked, especially when calls are holding when you make a stop like this. It's very labor-intensive to do it right. >> He's going to run. All right. Come here, Chewie. Come on. Come here, Chewie. Come here. Come here. Come on. All right. Come here. Come on. It's okay. Come on. Come on. Good boy. Good boy, Chewie. Come on. Come on. >> Try to get >> Come on. Come here. Go check it out, Chewie. Come on. Get in there. Come on. Come here, Chewie. Come on. Go check it out. Here. Come on. Yep. All we need is him to get in there. Chewie, stay. >> God damn it. God damn it. >> Dang it. Come on. Almost had him. >> I use the right hand. Try to like coax him in a little bit. >> It's okay, Chewie. Chewie, it's okay. >> Oh, sweet Jesus. >> Come here. Come here, Chewie. Come here. >> All right, there we go. You got it. YOU GOT IT. MOTHER THAT'S EXACTLY what I wanted him to do, too. >> Come on. Come here. Get in here. Come on. >> That's a catch pole. Sometimes officers carry them, but most of the time animal control will carry them, and it's for dogs cuz if they can lasso it around the neck, you can control the dog's head so that it can't bite you. And I'm surprised that an officer had that cuz I don't think that it's animal control. Well, I shouldn't say I'm surprised, but it's good that an officer had that. I don't know if it's going to work on a raccoon, but that's like catch pole. >> Come here, Chewie. It's okay. Come here. >> He's scared. He's all He's a dog. >> It's okay. Come on. It's okay. Come here, Chewie. What did he get? Come on. it's okay. It's okay. >> any treats to give him, Raisin? >> It's okay. >> Careful, Austin. >> Yeah. >> He needs to be caged, but I don't have a >> No, it's all right now. Come on. >> Austin? >> Yep. Yep. Yep. Yep. Ready? >> Push him again. Push the cage toward the door. >> Push tight. Push tight, Austin. I'm just going to finagle this. >> All right. >> Watch your hands. Watch your hands. >> Okay. >> Watch your fingers. >> Let me find what the Let's get out. He's almost He's almost out. Oh my god. >> Austin, just watch. >> Yep. >> You got him? I'm trying. >> Okay. >> Thank god. >> Thanks. Thanks, man. >> Good work. >> I'm glad that that worked out cuz that was a very cute raccoon. So, animal control, most jurisdictions have them. They are trained professionals who have enforcement abilities. They issue citations for people who do things to animals or aren't properly caring for their animals, all types of animals. They have a lot of experience working with animals. And in a lot of jurisdictions, they're officers. And they're animal control officers. And under circumstances like this, calling animal control would be ideal. In some jurisdictions, they only work during the day shift hours, but again, they just varies jurisdiction to jurisdiction. The animals that are taken into custody are brought to the facility. And depending on the facility, the next step after the I don't know if they keep them for a period of time. I don't know what how what happens in this jurisdiction. If you work animal control, I'm sure some of you watch, share what you do and what would happen under this circumstance like this, especially with the raccoon. >> Take this. Take this, please. And get >> Cat food is I need to >> That's right. Go that way. >> It's right there in the bag. >> All right. >> I have the I I >> They're not in the middle. They're not in They're not in the middle. >> No, no, no. Come on. Come on. Come on. Come on. Come on. >> Just back just Nope, back just get back. Please. Just Thank you. Thank you. There's not another raccoon in here, is there? >> So, the gloves he also has on. So, most officers have a pair of gloves that they carry and keep, which are protective gloves. Inside of that vehicle after searching it, they have to be sanitized some way and there are different types of gloves. Sometimes your gloves just have to be tossed. Very important because the gloves end up going in your pocket inside of your vehicle. Young aspiring officers, make sure you get a pair of gloves that you know will keep you safe and also don't recontaminate you or your vehicle after you do a search like that. >> So, what we're going to do from here, ma'am, is we are going to go inside so I can process you and write out your paperwork. Um and then we're going to wait for the deputy to show up, okay? No. Ma'am, I'm not letting you go to the bathroom. That I've given you more than enough leeway with everything. The one thing I cannot do because there's not a female that can sit with you in the stall to verify that you're not doing something you shouldn't be doing. I understand you have to go to the bathroom, but you're in trouble. You have to hold it. I'm sorry, that's just how this works. I'm going to unbuckle you here. We're going to go inside and sit in the Walmart office so I can give you your paperwork, okay? >> All right. If you want to just step back here. >> So, this was a really interesting one and there's a lot that we can learn from it. I want to talk about something else that's really important. The process when a person has probable cause charges and a warrant from another jurisdiction cuz this will explain a lot about what the detainer process is. So, if an officer arrests a person on probable cause charges, that means they have the facts and circumstances and it occurred in their jurisdiction, then they get arrested for those charges. The officer completes the probable cause affidavit and the person is arrested on those charges. If a person also has a warrant in another jurisdiction, normally a detainer is filled out, a piece of paper that will detain them after they would be bailed out for this charge. A detainer means that they would be detained for another jurisdiction to come and then pick them up. I mean, what happened in Las Vegas very frequently where we had fugitives from all over and we get them on PC charges and then they had a warrant from somewhere else. So then they just get held on and the other jurisdiction can pick them up after they deal with whatever they have to do with on the probable [music] cause charges. This lady didn't seem like a bad lady, but a whole bunch of wise choices and a story for a lifetime. Hopefully the raccoon made it out safely. Okay, so which leads me to a letter that I received, a phenomenal letter and I'm excited to share this with you. It says, "Hello Sergeant Curtis. My name is Nathan and I'm 11 years old and I want to thank you and all the police for what you do and keep us safe. I'm a Boy Scout with Troop 521. I'm not going to say the city, but the city and state are listed here, but I'm going to just protect the privacy. Troop 521, shout out to Nathan and it talks about the motto. It says, "Always be prepared." and he said that I tell officers to always be prepared for the fight of their life. It says, "I sent you a challenge coin." and it has the Boy Scout oath and law are how we try to live out the principles of scouting. And this is absolutely amazing. There was no coin inside and I'm just maybe it's going to come subsequently and I'll be on the lookout for it. Nathan and shout out to Troop 521. And this is why I do what I do for the young people to really learn. This is the kind of stuff that warms my heart. Nathan, thank you so much for the letter. I'll be on the lookout for your coin, which is so special because what we're doing for the 1-year anniversary is we're doing a giveaway to give back for all the wonderful things that have happened with this channel growth. So for the 1-year anniversary, if you are an officer on a department of 100 officers or less, we're going to [music] give you the opportunity to submit a video of your oath of office and how you plan to use it going forward. The winner will receive an all-expense-paid trip to the International Association Chiefs of Police Conference in October. I will be in attendance. You will also receive a brand new body cam. You will also receive body armor, brand new, and I will coin you at that event. So, all the details are coming very, very soon. I'm extraordinarily excited about doing this. And so, I'm also noticing that a lot of you who watch are not subscribed. So, please subscribe cuz that pushes it out to other people, and I wanted to get out to this officers. And the reason why I did it for officers on departments of what under 100 unless it's cuz a lot of people in those departments don't have the resources to go to these kinds of trainings and conferences. want to give the opportunity for them to go as well. So, please, if you're not subscribed, please subscribe. The other thing that I'd like to share is that we have created a scholarship program in memory of my mom. It's called the Dot Legacy Scholarship. My mother's name was Dorothy, and the Dot Legacy Scholarship is going to be a monetary scholarship to a high school senior who's going to a criminal justice program in school or a current criminal justice student or someone in that field to pay for tuition, books, or anything else school related. And we're also going to be rolling out the details for that very soon. So, again, make sure you subscribe, get it out to people, and [music] please check back in cuz at the end videos that I'm putting out as we push up close to that September anniversary, I'm going to put more details in where you can check in and find out about that. I'm really excited for all the things we've done, and I'm very, very thankful. Shout out to Troop 521 and Nathan. Continue to do all the wonderful things that you guys are doing.
