Help. Please get out of the car. Get out of the car. >> Get me. >> Anything I can explain? Nor >> in trouble with the ball in my baby's birthday face. And she saw it and [music] she like me on the arm. I was like, "Oh my god, >> what happened to your knees, buddy?" >> These children are navigating a confusing and challenging adult world. Only when authorities step in and do parents fully recognize their responsibilities, ensuring that their children's well-being is [music] protected from adult mistakes. Amid a tense divorce, this mother made a decision that surprised everyone and then had to face legal consequences and her husband's disappointment. >> The camera feed from the room shows you your husband four or five times in the head. On June 22nd, 2022, Athens, Georgia police received a report from a healthcare facility about a disagreement between a married couple. Security staff observed that the wife had lost her composure in front of their one-year-old daughter. Officers quickly arrived and documented statements from the medical staff before approaching the couple. >> Got it. >> Hello. >> How are you? >> Good. How are you? So, we're kind of in a pickle here. Okay. >> Technically, I can't show you the video without a court order. >> Shut up. >> Okay. >> Okay. >> Well, >> I'll let you see it cuz I know you need to. >> Let's not do that. I appreciate you being upfront about the whole court order thing. Let's not get anybody in trouble as far as showing me the video. What I will do, I'll go in there and I will speak to them. Uh, you said that you witnessed her him, correct? >> Oh, yeah. I cheated him a minimum of five times. >> Okay. Open hand, close hand. Where were we talking? >> Open hand. Open hand. >> First time she walked by, it was a straight open hand to the side of the face. The next time she walked up and it was four or five, both hands. >> Okay. So, here here's what we'll do. Um, since we have witness testimony, you um that that will be enough to at least have if we need to go the route of obtaining that, then we will fill out the we'll f the search warrant. I have no need for now. Thank you. We'll we'll go that route. Um, but I appreciate you being willing to show me, but but let's not get anybody in trouble. Uh, especially with this being a family issue. It's definitely going to go to court and stuff. Would you mind giving me your name? >> It's all right. It's part of it. >> All right. Now, what is the child here for? >> Uh, cough and congestion. >> Okay. So, no signs of her doing that to the child kind of thing. >> No weird injuries. >> Cool. Cool. All right. How has her demeanor and behavior been other than hitting him? And did he react and hit her in this? >> Yeah. So, whenever she came in just with the baby and then he showed up maybe 30 minutes after they've been here for almost 4 hours. Okay. >> So, after they got into the room, then 30 40 minutes he came in. Whenever I was in there with the baby initially getting her swabs and stuff done, mom was very appropriate, calm, smiling conversation with me, >> very helpful with swabbing the baby. >> And then the only interaction I've had since then was going in to recheck the overall temperature and things seemed very tense between the two of them. That was after we knew all of or saw all >> So you've also viewed the footage. >> Yeah. Okay. My nurse who was out. So, we have cameras like this out where we sat and she saw it and she like me on the arm and was like, "Oh my god." And so I came back here to watch it. >> Are these audio and video? >> Just video. And you could get the footage for me. >> Oh yeah. >> Okay, cool. >> That wouldn't be an issue at all. >> Okay. I've seen her mood is very roller coaster like after the first she was smiling like it was a joke >> after the five minutes or so she was like gritting her teeth and seemed very agitated. >> Do we have the ability to get her information right now so that I can have it before we go in there or before I go in there? And she stay acted like she was mad for a good 30 45 minutes >> and then it went back to smiling and then it would go back to the roller coaster. He's smiling for five minutes pissed off smiling. >> When she wasing him the child was in the room >> just like she or he is now. >> Yeah. Just sitting right on the bed. >> Mom's back was turned to the kid while she was. So technically no one was watching her at the time. >> All right. Well, I'm going to go talk to him. See what's going on in there. If she gets combative in there, I'm gonna have another person come over here. Which door is easier for them to access me >> and I can call and let just to let them in. Okay. >> So that way there's no issue. >> That's perfect. Thank you. >> No problem. >> They spoke with the mother to understand the marital situation and the cause of the conflict. >> Hello. >> Hey. >> Hey, I'm officer Cochman with Clark County. Can I speak with you, ma'am? >> Yes. Back here, please. How are you doing? >> Good. How are you? >> Good. Are you Taylor? Yeah. >> Oh, you have such a cute baby. So, we got a call that because people were concerned. The camera feed from the room shows you your husband four or five times in the head. Is that husband? >> Divorce. >> Okay. So, husband, ex-husbandish. >> Okay. Um shows you him in the head five times. Um with an open hand. What What's going on in there? >> Um well, a lot. Um we're going through a divorce. Um he's talking to other girls. Um a lot. >> What caused you to to hit him tonight? I just saw the girls was calling him. >> Okay. You just saw something on his phone. You got upset about it. >> All right. How's your child doing? I know they said that she's just here for some coughing stuff. >> Yeah, she's good. >> Is she okay? Yes. >> Okay. All right. That's really important. Um, so I'll have to I'm I'm going to speak to him really quick and just talk to him. If you'll just stand here and talk to this officer really quick while I do that. >> Yes. >> Thank you. >> The father also shared his perspective. Although he did not wish to press charges because a child was involved, police were required to act according to George's family safety regulations. >> Hey, man. Hey, what's your name, sir? Uh, Cody, is your last name the same? >> Yes. >> Okay. Cody, what's going on, man? We got a phone call that was pretty concerning about her her on you in here. >> She she saw some some other girl on your phone. She got upset about it. >> All right, man. Um, is this the first time that that she's she's done something like that? Is this a recoccurring thing? We're going through a divorce. >> I got you. That's what she told me. >> Let me Let me get some of your information really quick. You have a really pretty baby, by the way. Hope she's feeling a little bit better. >> Be able to go home. >> Is your name with a C or a K. >> I got you. Here's what's going to have to happen. Right. So, in the state of Georgia, family violence are very clear. Right. She put hands whether or not you want her to get in trouble for it. She put hands on you in an aggressive manner and she did it in front of your child in a public setting to where other people have it videoed. Even if you don't want to press charges, she is going to she's going to be placed under arrest for simple simple battery family. Okay, I know this seems like a very minuscule thing for her to be arrested for. It's a really big deal. Okay, she did it here in the hospital. She did it in front of your child. It's you know like Halloween. >> I got you. And that's why I was explaining the it's so here's here's why the state of Georgia went ahead and put this into effect several several years ago that if we have a family relationship and we have evidence of things getting physical of a crime then we make that arrest because say it was reversed say you're in her on her she says I don't want to press charges I don't press charges worst case scenario y'all go home things get worse and it could be that way with you as well >> if she keeps saying things on your phone like that but we don't live together nothing like that >> I understand that but due to the that y'all technically right now are married. Even though you're going through the divorce, you do have a child together. Those two right there and you've lived together. I mean, that's three family that's three three family relationships right there off the bat. >> When can she get out? >> And she's going to go with me uh tonight. Um and then first thing in the morning, she's going to either sit in front of a judge or teleconference a judge. They're going to talk about the fact that y'all have a kid together. They're going to talk about not putting hands on each other. I mean, I know this might sound elementary, but these are things that that they are going to sit down and talk to to her about. What they're going to do is they're going to call you on the phone. They're going to say, "Hey, we're meeting with her. Here's what's going on. You need to make sure that you were able to answer your phone between the hours of 8 a.m. and 12. So, just that 4 hour block is roughly when she's going to see a judge. Okay? So, the judge is going to call you. She can't be released until he makes contact. He or she makes contact with you." Okay? So, that's why I'm putting the emphasis on make sure you got your phone. >> Is she going to bail or like >> No. So, so, so she's, so she will sit in there until she sees the judge and then she'll be released. Okay. It's not like I'm going to drop her off and an hour later she can get out. She has to see the judge for a family crime. Okay. Now, when she was you open hand, closed hand. >> Oh, I just >> Okay. >> Per the video, they were telling me that it seemed like open hand from the video and so I just wanted to run it past you. Does that seem like something that probably happened? >> It wasn't a punch. >> Okay. Were was she saying anything while she was you or is it she was just reacting to something she saw and and she overreacted and so stuff happens. This isn't going to be the end of the world. It's not like she's going to be a convicted felon or something crazy, right? But this this is something that we cannot allow to continue especially when we it's it's in a public area where people can see it, right? Especially in front of your child. I mean >> I mean you got to put her in handcuffs. >> Yeah, she's going to have to go in handcuffs right now. I mean that's she's under arrest. So So she's going to have to go in handcuffs. Here's what uh I would like to do. Um, so obviously your your dad, okay, do you all have any current custody issues? I >> mean, she gets them through the week and then I get one night through the week. >> Okay. But nothing like you can't be alone with the child, stuff like that. Okay. >> The other daughter's with her mom. >> I mean, I might have to go to her car and get the car seat out cuz I don't have mine. >> So the the car is going to stay here. So if she's fine with the key staying with you, cool. I mean, she can't take her car with her. You know what I mean? Did y'all ride together? >> No. >> Okay. So her car will just stay here then. Okay. Um, you can make the decision of however you want to do the car situation, but the car will stay here and then y'all can come get it tomorrow or her and someone else, whatever, can come get it tomorrow. Okay. Look, man, I I know this is a crappy situation, especially when y'all are just worried about your kid, but you kind of understand a little bit more now. >> I understand her first birthday and all. >> I know. I I hate it. But it I guess the the only good part about it is is hopefully since she's only one, she ain't ever going to remember any any bit of this. I'm not going to put your uh wife ex-wife thing uh in handcuffs in front of her because she has child. We we just don't do that. Um unless we absolutely have to. So, now that I have explained kind of all that to you, what I'm going to do is is we're going to we're going to get her situated. My partner is also outside. Um >> I mean, >> not yet. I I I wanted to come in and speak with you so that I could calmly explain to you what's going on before I had to break the bad news to her. But what we're going to do is I'm going to get this process started with her and then I'm going to have my partner bring in some paperwork. Okay? Okay, it's going to be the case number for this and it's going to be a pamphlet. We have to give it to you even if you don't want it. It's a family pamphlet. We just have to hand it over. You can throw it in the trash later if you want to. Um but that's going to happen as well. So, I know this is crap, man. But it's just where we're at. Um do you happen to know her birthday? Like day, month, and year. Okay. Well, again, I do apologize if the situation happened to you guys. Um but it it's just it's just how things work, man. Hopefully I'll never run into a situation like this again, but that's just kind of where we're at. Um, like I said, he's going to bring you in the paperwork. So, if you have any questions, hopefully the paperwork will answer it or he can answer any more questions that you might have here in just a minute. We're going to try to make this as calm as a process as possible. Okay? I don't want her to be embarrassed out here in front of all them. So, if she's willing to be calm, we will walk out front before we put handcuffs on. If she's not willing to be calm, then we'll just have to put her in handcuffs here. Does that make sense? All right. Again, sorry, man. I hate these situations. The mother was informed of her [music] legal responsibilities. All procedures were carried out carefully to avoid distressing the child while helping her understand the consequences [music] of letting emotions take over. >> Okay, Miss Taylor. >> Yes. >> So, speaking with Cody, um, obviously he was just going further into what happened in the room. >> So, we're going to try and do this as calm as possible. We're going to try We're not going to do anything in front of your son, >> daughter. >> Daughter. Sorry. Um, we're not going to do anything in front of your daughter, but what I would like for you to do is if you could grab your purse, you're going to have to come with us. Okay. Okay, >> we'll go in here. We'll just grab your purse really quick. You'll get whatever you need. If you need to leave him your car key so he can get a car seat for when your son's ready to go. >> I got a car seat. >> What? >> What? >> Call my dad. >> I will >> call my and tell her to make some dinner now. Because no one had fire. >> All right. So, we'll just go ahead and get outside. I'm not going to You're being cooperative. I'm not going to put your handcuffs in here. >> I'll explain more as to why this has to happen when we get outside. Okay. >> Okay. It's been her birthday's tomorrow. >> That's what he was telling me. >> Um it's been a rough year. So, my car is over this way. >> Okay. >> Um, I'm going to just go into more explanation for you right now. So, obviously, your husband, ex-husband did not want to press any type of charges against you, okay? But in the state of Georgia, it's not up to the victim anymore. If we have probable cause that a crime committed, then we will make an arrest on behalf of the state. This isn't going to ruin your life. It's not the end of the world, but first thing in the morning, you're going to see a judge either in person or over teleconference. He's going to talk to you about some stuff. He or she's going to talk to you. That judge is also going to call him. They're going to have a conversation over the phone, and then they're going to just go over some stipulations with you and try to make sure this doesn't happen anymore. Okay. >> Okay. >> If you'll just set your purse right here for me. I'm just going to put it in the front of my car. Okay. >> Okay. >> Um, do you have any pockets on you? >> I'm just going to quickly pat you down really quick. >> Okay. All right. And uh if you'll just go and put your hands behind your back, palms together. I'm gonna make sure it doesn't. So we'll turn you this way. There you go. Sorry. Okay. Is there anything in your purse that your child is going to need or did you get everything out? Yes. >> All right. So when what I want you to do is is sit your butt down first when you get in and push your just use the door to push yourself back. Don't try to put your feet in there. >> And leave your feet up on the seat. >> Yeah. Yeah. >> I'm sorry. >> So you can put your feet up on the seat. Don't try to put your feet down there cuz it'll cut the top of your feet since you're wearing sandals. >> I'm a nervous ray. >> It's okay. >> Don't be nervous. It's okay. >> Like I said, this isn't the end of the world. It's not going to mess up anything with your children. >> Yeah. You have to stay till the morning cuz you have to see a judge first. Okay. That being family stuff, you got to see a judge. I promise you'll be fine. Do you have any questions right now? Anything I can explain? >> I've been in trouble with the law and my baby's birthday's tomorrow. >> You'll you'll be out for your baby's birthday. I promise. Okay. Um, I am just going to poke through your purse really quick to make sure you don't have any or in there, but I'm not going to get invasive or anything. Okay. All right. >> Did you watch the video already? >> Um, the mother was charged with simple battery, [music] family violence, and to children, third degree. Under Georgia law, she could face up to two years in [music] prison and a $6,000 fine. Family disagreements should be addressed with understanding and guidance, not through conflict. Only then can children grow up in a safe [music] and supportive environment. This boy traveled 2 miles on his small scooter trying to find a safe place for himself. >> If we drive to the apartments, would you be able to tell which building is yours? >> Okay. >> Yours has a scarecrow in front. >> Okay. >> On September 27th, 2021, a woman walking her dog discovered a young boy alone by the roadside. He explained that he was trying to get to his grandmother's house in St. Augustine because no one was home with him. Concerned for his safety, the woman immediately called 911. Minutes later, Palm Coast police arrived, took the witness's statement, and quickly ensured the child's well-being. >> Good morning. >> Good morning, >> Deputy Win County Sheriff's Office. What's going on here? >> I always walk my dogs in the morning. >> Okay. And I had a gentleman pull his car and he said, "Ma'am, can you see back there? There's a little young boy walking by himself. He doesn't have cuz I had personally seen him since we were coming this direction and he was in the other direction." And so he says, "I'm afraid because you know he's all by himself." And I said, and I'm looking. Yeah, it's a little tiny boy. You know, he's all barefooted. And so I stopped and I asked him, you know, what are you doing? He says he's trying to get to his grandma's house. So, I called you got 911, I should say. >> Okay. >> And he says he's he's been by himself. His mom and dad works. It turns out he says he was by himself and he's trying to get to grandma's house. >> Okay. >> Grandma lives in Dadd. And according to the 911 lady that's in St. Augustine. >> I see. And he says the ones in his house right now is Zach, his mother's boyfriend, and and the mom. He said he wanted to leave cuz they don't take care of him and he's by himself. >> I see. Do you happen to have your ID on you, ma'am? Or driver's license? >> I I do. Morning. >> How are you? Hey, bud. What's going on? >> Just trying to get home to grandma. Yeah. >> Cuz he said he was left by himself. >> Okay. Were you just walking by or how did you find him? She was notified by another passer by as she was walking her dog. >> Oh, okay. What happened to your knees, buddy? >> You fell off. >> Seems to have his um leg here. His legs. I mean, I scrubbed a little bit to see if he was dirty, you know, from just dirt kind of accumulating. >> And you found him right here? >> Uh right here. >> I was actually over there and I walked back when the gentleman told me, "Ma'am, can you double check on this?" And I cuz I honestly didn't initially see him. >> I just came out of burrows here and made a ride and I noticed that a car was parked like in front of me. But you know sometimes people stop to do something. >> Kind of chilly out. Can I put some socks on you? >> Okay, perfect. >> Right here. >> Do you live with mom and dad? >> From there when the gentleman stopped. >> Who do you live with? >> Friend is with the dogs. I walked >> living with my >> So this is where boyfriend. >> Do you know where >> in time lake? That's all he had. >> Pine Lakes. Okay. Was it an apartment or was it in a house? >> Your apartment. >> An apartment. Okay. Do you remember what number it says on the door? >> No. >> No. >> Do you remember what building? >> Okay. >> Do you want to go inside my car where it's warm? >> All right. The only thing you have is your scooter and your jacket. >> All right. Come on. I appreciate it, ma'am. >> You're welcome. While officers offered him water and snacks, the boy calmly recounted his story, [music] helping them identify his home's location. >> Listen to my car. >> Wash your curb. I'm putting him in the car so it's warm. >> I'm putting him in my car so it's warm. >> I put my jacket on. >> I can just turn up the heat. >> All right. Can I give you a hug? Is that okay? All right. And the police take good care of you. Okay. So, keep that little jacket on you and um it'll work out. Okay. He says he's hungry. >> Okay. >> Bye, Aiden. >> I'm going to blow you a kiss. Okay. [laughter] >> We're going to keep this here for now and then we'll put it in if we go anywhere. I think she's getting all right. Give us just a second. If we drive to the apartments, would you be able to tell which building is yours? >> Okay. >> Mine has a scarecrow. >> Yours has a scarecrow in front. >> Okay. He says he can point out which building is his once we drive over there if contacts not made on phone. >> You want some trail mix or Froot Loops or Cheetos? >> Froot Loops sounds good to me. >> Can I try one? Excellent. Perfect. I had to taste test it for you. >> He mentioned that he would be able to point out which building is his. Um if we drive over there, so I believe that I'll just do that. Make it simple. >> Are you cold? >> Yeah. >> Is that Deputy WS? Did he give that to you? >> Oh, yeah. It's a girl right there. >> Oh, perfect. Excellent. >> I think we'll just attempt contact with um parents first and find out what's going. I'm about ready to head out whenever he's done eating. >> Okay. Who else do you live with? >> My grandma and my grandpa. My grandpa's live really far, but my grandma is in the same city. >> Oh, okay. That's not too far. >> You don't like Cheetos? >> I paid you for a Cheeto guy. That's why I open these so I can share them with you. But if you're not a Cheeto person, I guess I'm just going to have to eat them all by myself. Unless Deputy One wants some snacks. All right. Pretty cool. Well, I'm going to go to that 13 vehicle, but if you guys need anything, let me know. >> He didn't say what exactly last boyfriend. >> He doesn't know. That's in the notes. It says he doesn't know. Let me Let me see. Hey, Aiden, do you know what mom's boyfriend's name is? >> Zack. >> Zack. >> Do you know what his last name is? >> You know what it starts with? >> No. >> No. Okay. >> Where does your mom work? >> At the hospital. And you know where Zach works? Is mom home now or is she at the hospital? >> He thinks that mom is at work right now. She works at the hospital. Does she work at the hospital here in Palm Coast or the one in St. Augustine? >> Oh, the one in St. Augustine. She That's where she works. What does she do there? >> She helps people. That's awesome. St. Augustine. All right, dude. I got to run to another call, but I wanted to give you some stuff here. I got you. All right, I'll talk to you later. You be safe. Okay. All right. I'll see you later. >> Using this information, police went to his apartment. The door was a jar and inside it was quiet. All signs indicated the boy had been alone for several hours. >> We'll be attempting contact at building 215. >> Do you know if this kid lives here by any chance? >> Um, I don't. I think the people who just live here just moved in not too long ago. Okay. >> I've I think I've seen him before, though. >> All right. >> It should be this apartment. >> Okay. Do you know the neighbor that lives here? >> Well, if he left, then the door's got to be unlocked, right? >> Still unlocked. >> Just moved in maybe like not even a month ago. Okay. Few weeks ago, >> it's unlocked. >> It is unlocked, but apparently cuz there's a there's nobody in there right now. >> There's nobody inside of it. >> There's nobody inside. Yeah. >> Sheriff's office. Sheriff's office. >> Going to let my uh my girlfriend know just in case if she sees him or anything, she can let you guys know. Okay, >> I appreciate that. >> No problem. >> I don't see anybody. >> Nobody's here. >> Oh, that's crazy. >> All right. >> Why don't you go get a shirt? A long sleeve shirt on. Is there a EC for the apartment that we can contact to find out more information on the tenants? I >> mean, I'm sure I'm sure there is. Um, I don't know what any of these names are. This is all like assisted living facilities, and I only know that because I've recently toured them for my father, but it's like Silver Creek and Bay View. >> It looks like all female stuff in there in the closets and stuff. It looks like women's stuff. So, I don't know if boyfriend was maybe sleeping over or something. But he says that he lives here, but he's only here for the night because he lives with grandma in St. Augustine, which we're also trying to find. But he just brought this phone out to call his mom. Doesn't know how to call his mom. And there's no favorite. This says she called Jeff on Saturday. Jeff is your dad, right? >> Yeah. >> Where does he live? Deer run. >> Yeah. >> I don't know where that is. When the mother returned, she explained she had left at 3:20 a.m. to take a friend to the airport and didn't want to wake the child. >> Oh, mom's home. You want to go see You want to go see her? >> All right, come here. Come here. Don't run out. >> Are you okay if I close this door? Do you have your key with you? >> Yeah. >> Okay, perfect. >> Oh my god. >> He went to the airport and the six-year-old home alone. >> Yeah. >> You didn't think to maybe bring him? >> I don't want to wake him up. Did he call you guys? No, he was on Belair, which is >> 6 miles away. >> lanes of traffic where he could have gotten run over by a vehicle. >> When did you leave McDonald's? >> Cuz he's 6 years old. >> I mean, it takes some time to get 6 miles away on a on a scooter barefoot. I put socks on him. We'll be contacting DCF. >> Who else resides here, ma'am? >> Well, my mom holds me with him, so she's in and out, but it's just me and him. And he lives with his dad. >> Where does his dad? >> San. >> Where's his grandmother? >> San. How long is he here for? >> Till Friday. >> When did he get here? >> Last Friday. We do a week on, week off >> between you and uh dad. Yeah. >> And you just got back from the airport, >> right? >> This is technically child. >> I know. >> However, a six-year-old home alone and allowing them to travel on public roads violates Florida's child care regulations. As a result, the mother was held legally accountable. >> Home for close to 2 hours. I know. I honestly thought he would be doing okay cuz he sinks. >> He's 6 years old. And what if somebody took him or he got ran over by a vehicle? >> I know. >> What if he got home before we even found him and nobody else saw him and then we have a missing child? >> Do you know how he was reported to us? A driver on Belair stopped a pedestrian and let her know to check on this child that was in front of station 23 barefoot. >> Stupid. >> And with only a puffy jacket. So, I have the lady who called us. She let him use her jacket. I have his scooter in the back of my car as well. He's trying to ride all the way up to his grandma's house cuz that's where he wants to be. Hey, would you mind going upstairs with Deputy Lane real quick? I have a few questions for you right now. My name is Deputy Win number 875. I have questions pertaining to child collect. These are your rights. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say may be used as evidence against you. These rights of mine, are you willing to talk to me? probably. >> Yes. No. Yes. >> Talk to you. >> Okay. When When did you leave for the airport, ma'am? >> 3:20 a.m. >> Miranda, bro. >> Who are you taking to the airport? >> My boyfriend. >> Does a boyfriend stay here? >> Not with me. >> Okay. >> He has a house. >> Do you normally leave leave here alone? >> No, never. >> Okay. So, here's the thing. While you were gone, A went around the house, saw that there was nobody, and he got scared. He wanted to go to grandma's house, which is in St. Augustine. He then took his scooter out and rode his electric scooter for 2 mi in 65 66°ree weather next to one barefooted next to one of the busiest streets in Palm Coast. And then he was found because he was huddled up on top of his bike by a pedestrian in front of a fire station. At this time, ma'am, I'm placing you under arrest for child. If you could please turn around, place your hands behind your back. >> I'm going to take your I'll just set this back in your apartment somewhere. They're not going to let you take it back. >> The mother was charged with child without serious thirdderee offense. Under Florida law, the maximum penalty is 5 years in prison or probation plus a $5,000 fine. Temporarily, the child was placed in the care of his grandmother while the Department of Children and Families continues reviewing the case. The child's loneliness and anxiety reflect the consequences of a lack of family attention. This serves as a reminder that children need love, care, and a sense of safety far more than anything material. Do you think a small driving mistake is inconsequential? See what happens when the law, parental responsibility, and child safety all intersect in the same Jeep. >> You're not allowed to be checking me. Why not? >> Cuz you're a guy. You're not supposed to be touching me. >> Shut up. >> What? >> On July 24th, 2025, an officer spotted a white Jeep without a license plate. At first, it seemed like a simple situation, but when the driver could not provide a valid license, registration, or insurance, the case quickly became serious. >> Hello, I'm Officer Howard. Yes, ma'am. Please, do you have your license, your registration, your insurance? >> Because we just barely took we're just barely trying to get this to get fixed. >> We're okay, baby. Don't worry. Yes, I did. Don't worry, baby. You're not in trouble. >> No, you're you're okay. Do you know your social security number? >> Yes. >> Okay. So, you've been driving up and down La Hoya. >> We just barely >> Listen, this is my third time seeing you drive up and down. No, you don't promise to God. >> I want you to be completely honest with me. Listen to me. We have cameras on La Hoya. You know how many times I picked up this Jeep today just from me parked out front of that fire station? Twice. This is the third. >> No, sir. >> It is. It is. >> I promised. >> From 6:00 this morning to now it's the third. >> What? Tell him. >> We actually know you. >> You know me. >> Oh, okay. Is there a reason she's not in a in a child >> safety? Hold on. Oh, I need to make sure it's not stolen first. Okay. >> Stolen. I'm going to I'm going to pop open this door. Okay. >> Clear for a VIN. >> Okay. Hang tight for me real quick. Okay. The driver had a suspended license for several years and did not follow child safety regulations by allowing the child to sit in the front seat instead of the back. Police had to take careful measures to ensure the child's well-being. >> Okay, Melissa, can you come back here and talk to me real quick? >> Do you have a phone? >> So, so we have a slew of issues right now. Okay. You're revoked and I'm pretty sure you know that. >> I do not have a license cuz I got really sick and I never went for my driver's license back. I did. They did take it away from me about 15 years ago. I'm not going to lie. >> Okay. >> And uh I never What do you call it? What happened to license plate? Is that why you stopped me? >> Yeah. There's no there's there was no license plate on the vehicle. So >> I didn't know that. I am No. No. >> Well, that's why I told you I needed to make sure it wasn't stolen. >> No, it's not stolen. I don't know what happened to you. >> So, you're revoked. You have a warrant out of magistrate court for shoplifting. >> Okay, >> I went to court for that. >> I'm just telling you what my dispatch is telling me. Okay, >> you're revoked. You have a warrant out of magistrate court. The registration and insurance on the vehicle are both suspended and she's not in a seat. >> Okay. I promise to God you will never see me back there again. >> Did I already? Several times. >> But I I promise to God I haven't. I don't know what other Jeep you've seen like this. >> This one? >> Well, I only this is the first time he called me and I came. He wasn't there and I was on my way back. I promised to God. I Mr. Roer, I would not lie to you. And and the time about 30 minutes ago, 40 minutes ago. >> I wasn't I Was it me? >> You You told me you This is your second time today. >> Did No, this is my first time. I went over there and I'm going straight back now. That's I promise to God. >> You were going You were going from Mccertie to Riverside. >> No, I don't go to Riverside. >> Listen, I know it was this Jeep. I'm not saying you were the one driving, but it was this Jeep. Does anyone else drive this Jeep? Exactly. This is the only white Jeep that has no license plate with this sticker in the corner. Cuz you passed me sitting in front of the fire station going towards Riverside. I'm not saying you went to Riverside, but you went towards Riverside and you accelerated when you passed me and I was going to pull you over earlier, but I decided not to. >> It was not me, sir. I promise. >> You just told me no one else drives this Jeep. >> I promise to go it was not me. Mr. O'Hara, >> we we have we have What did I just So, registration insurance revoked warrant. And she's not in a She's not even in the back seat. You can move the mirror. I can't. You're putting her safety at risk. >> I know. I'm so sorry, Mr. O'Hara. Please give me this one chance to go home to me. I beg you. I beg you. You can follow me. >> No, I I can't follow you. My jurisdiction ends at the city limits. Okay. >> So, right now, you are going to be placed in handcuffs. You're not under arrest. You're detained until I can figure out what I'm going to do with her. Don't grab me. Okay. >> Okay. At least tell her by >> You're not You're not leaving. You're not leaving. Let me tell her by the hand. >> Stop resisting. Okay. You're not under arrest. You're just being detained. Okay. >> Why? >> What do you mean why? I just told you five reasons why. We just We have We have to figure out where to put you in the car because we can't have you in the front seat. >> My dad. >> Who's your dad? Is >> Are you >> I didn't even recognize you. I know nobody's in trouble. Okay. >> Is trouble again? >> Yeah, she's No, she's okay. >> Throughout the check, officers tried to reassure the child and contact relatives using the information he provided. >> What are you doing over here? >> You just lifted your shirt up. >> No, I was putting my shirt down. >> Your shirt was down. >> No, it's not. >> Stop moving around. Do you have anything on you? >> No. >> Stop. Do you have anything on you at all that I need to know about? >> I have a >> Stop reaching. >> I'm going to show you. >> No. Stop reaching. Just tell me what you have. >> I have a lighter. Can I give it to you? >> No. Okay. Listen to me. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. Before I question you any further or try and get a hold of anyone to come pick her up, are you okay with me talking to you? >> Okay. You don't have any means of calling anybody? You don't have a phone? Nothing. Does she have a phone? >> Yeah, but it doesn't work. >> Okay. >> This is who belongs to truck. This is who? >> Yeah. No, I know who your dad is. Do >> you want me to leave work? I can leave work and head down there right now. Can send the car with Joe and tell him to take it to my house and he can get my daughter and I'll be right there. >> Okay. All right. >> Bye, man. >> There you go. >> Thank you. >> Oh my god. >> I'm going to ask you one last time if you have anything on you. >> No. >> Then what were you doing with your shirt? What were you doing with your shirt? >> I'm getting sick. >> Okay, answer my questions. Okay. What were you doing with your shirt? >> Insulin and I take all kinds of medicine. Well, figure it out right now. >> You guys are going to let her do nothing. Are you guys going to charge her? >> Oh, yeah. >> Oh, yeah. She's going to be going to town. >> Yeah, that's it. The mother faced charges including aggravated resisting an officer, child use, motor vehicle theft, driving on a revoked license, possession of a controlled substance, moving traffic violations, no seat belt, child restraint violation, unlawful taking of a motor vehicle, and registration without insurance. Even minor driving mistakes can become serious when combined with insufficient supervision. Children must be protected first, and that responsibility lies with adults. This mother had just gone through a tense encounter with police on a Wisconsin street. Fortunately, the child remained safe while [music] she faced legal responsibility. >> Get out of the ground. Get on the ground. GET OUT OF THE CAR. It's going to be THE >> On September 10th, 2023, police received a report of a woman driving unsafeely, going the wrong way, and running a red light with a child in the vehicle. Officers quickly arrived and collected statements from witnesses. >> Talk with her. They let her go and then we were eating dinner here and then she came around the block really fast >> after she got released. >> After she got released and then so someone honked at her and that's what got our attention. Well, wait a second. So she must have went through the red light, cut someone off originally and then she went on the block at least four, five or six more times. >> Faster and faster. She curb checked once right here. Right here she had to curb over on that side. She went right around locally around a person on a small moped or small motor >> moped motorcycle >> that was that was stopped at the red light around red light right past >> from where >> he was probably yeah from here. So she just kept coming around this block same block over >> kept kept hitting this red light. >> She kept Yeah. this red light. Is there anything we could help you out with? Are you okay? >> Can you take your hands off? >> I can't. I can't, unfortunately. What's going on today? >> I'm just trying to wake up from a bad, really bad dream. >> Okay. Okay. >> Go ahead. I'm Officer Brown coming to you. >> I'm trying to wake up from a really bad dream and we're all living in the matrix. >> Okay. I got you. She just told me she's trying to wake up from a bad night. >> I'm not crazy. >> Okay. We're just No, no, no. We're just worried about you. >> We're just worried about you. Okay. Is there anybody else in the car? >> No. You have my daughter? >> Yeah. >> Okay. Okay. >> All right. >> Seemed like you were just kind of stuck in a loop there. Are you okay? >> I'm absolutely fine, sir. >> Okay, we're going to take some deep breaths. Okay. >> Where are you from? >> I'm glad you're Well, I I don't actually have a place to stay right now. >> Okay. >> Can I move you to your butt so then we can kind of chat here? >> Um, I would prefer to stay right here. >> Perfect. That works for me. >> I'm going to call you. >> Okay. So, what's your name again? >> My name is Alicia. Okay. Hi, I'm Ray. Okay. Ray Borro. Okay. Sorry. We kind of meet like this. I think your car is pretty damaged here. Just to make sure that we're safe here. I know the passenger or all the airbags deployed. And it looks like you got some mouth your on your mouth. Are you injured at all? >> No, I'm not. >> No. Okay. Okay. Do you have like an ID on you or anything in the car here? >> My ID is in the car. >> It's in the car. Okay. Although the mother appeared confused and distracted, officers followed full procedures, ensuring the child's well-being and checking the mother's condition. I'm going to have you roll up on your side. >> You ready to stand up with me? I'm going to get you on your butt. Okay. >> One more second, please. >> Can I get you on your butt at least? No. >> Second. >> All right. Here we go. On your butt. I wouldn't mind >> ordering on your feet. There you go. Grab your foot right here. Here we go. >> Swing your feet up on there for us. Excellent. Lean back if you want. >> The lights. >> Yep. She's back. Check this battery not going down. No. >> Oh, never mind. Okay, Alicia, coming here. We're going to come right over here. >> We're going to sit in the car here. >> Okay, thank you. [music] assessments in accordance with routine procedures. >> Okay. I I would like to just cuz I have suspicion that you are under the influence. I think I heard earlier that you were using some stuff. Just saying just because you use that stuff that you are, but I I want to make sure that you're safe to operate a motor vehicle. Does that make sense? >> Yeah. >> Okay. All right. So, what we're going to do to do those tests, I have to take you out of handcuffs. I know you already kind of had the driving bizarre kind of traffic stop kind of conduct here today. You're not going to try to run or flee or hide or fight if we take handcuffs off you, are you? No. Okay. All right. All right. We're going to go ahead and take the cream off you and we're going to go ahead and uh kind of do what we got to do. Okay. Parker, you want her area there? >> Your name is Alicia. >> Yes, ma'am. >> Okay. Go ahead and step out for me. >> Can you open your mouth, stick out your tongue for me? I know you got something on your lip. Can you open your mouth? Stick out your tongue. Stick it all the way out like that. Uh stick out your tongue. Uh okay. All right. So, we're going to take you out of handcuffs. Okay. While we do that, just ask you don't hide by anything like that. Okay. Better not be good, >> right? >> All right. >> Yeah. Just do extra hand. >> Do you have any medical issues that I need to be aware of? Any injuries to your body? Anything like that? >> Not that you need to be aware of, sir. >> Okay. Go ahead and put that hand on top of your head for me. >> I know the ambulance checked you out. Can you tell me a little bit about your physical condition? Do you feel okay? Do you have vision in both eyes? Can you see and everything like that? >> Right now, I can. Yes, sir. >> Okay. We're going to go over here to these lines. >> I'm a little >> Yeah, I I figured. Yeah. All right. We're going to go right over here to these lines. I know this is a parking lot, so there may be some stuff in the parking lot. You going to stand right on that line right there? All right. So, the first test I'm going to administer is an eye test. Okay. Do you have vision in both of your eyes? >> Yes. >> Do you wear prescription glasses or contacts? >> Okay. So, I'm going to move my finger from side to side. While I do that, I want you to focus right here on the tip of my finger. And then don't move your head. Just follow with your eyes. Does the first test make sense? >> I can remember what to say. >> Sure. I'm going to move my Yeah, it's okay. I'm going to move my finger from side to side. And I want you just to follow the tip of my finger. Does that make sense? Does that make sense? >> I think you might be answering. >> I'm sorry. I was just overthinking. >> That's okay. Do you do you understand though what I'm saying? >> Yes, I can understand the words you're saying, but I can't concentrate right now. >> Sure. I understand. There's probably a lot of stuff going through your mind. If you can help me out and just verbalize those things outside just so I can hear you. Okay. All right. Just focus right here and follow my finger. >> I'm sorry. I still just can't concentrate. Give me just a second. >> Sure. Absolutely. >> Good. Yes. No. All right. Okay. All right. Cool. I just can't read your mind. So, here. Right here. And follow my finger. Don't move your head. Just follow my finger. Don't move your head. Just your eyes. Keep going. Almost done. Keep your head just right here. Just follow your finger. >> Don't move your head. Just try right here. Focus right here. Follow my finger. Follow my finger. >> I'm sorry. I just can't concentrate. I'm sorry. >> Okay. >> I can't concentrate when I have your question. >> Okay. All right. This is just an eye test. Okay. So, just follow my finger. Just follow me. No. No. Hold it out here. Just keep following it. Keep following my finger. Keep following it. the other way. Don't move. Just your eyes. Just your eyes. One more time. Follow this one. Just your eyes. >> I'm sorry. Can I have a moment? >> Yeah. I'm just >> Yeah. Tell me. Further checks were carried out promptly under the officer's professional and respectful [music] guidance. Okay, cool. All right, so the next test is a walking and a balancing test. Do you have anything that affects your ability to walk or balance? >> Nothing that affects me, but I'm kind of like off center right now, honestly. >> Okay. Just spiritually speaking, or just kind of like uh just off center just like >> completely. >> Okay. Okay. Um so we're going to use this straight line for this test. Okay. What I'm have you do is I'm going to get you into a position. I want you to stand in that position and then don't do anything until I tell you to begin. Does that make sense so far? >> I'm sorry. Um, can you repeat that for me? >> Absolutely. Yeah. So, I'm going to have you stand in a position and I want you to stay in that position. Does that make sense? >> Yes. >> No. >> I'm sorry. >> Okay. So, I want to have you stand like this. Put your left foot on the line. Go ahead and do that right now. Left foot. Yep. Left foot. left foot. That's your right. Could you put your left foot on the line? There you go. Now, stand with your right foot touching heel to toe in front of your left. Stop right there and then put your arms down to your side. Watch me as I explain and demonstrate the test. You understand so far? >> Could you repeat that? I >> Yeah. Just watch me as I do as I show you how to do the test. So, watch me as I do it. You got me? I'm sorry. >> Can you watch me while I do the test? >> Okay. So, just watch me. Stand as you are. Okay. So, put your left foot on the line. >> Go ahead. >> Can I have just a second? >> No. We're We're We're kind of done with the seconds here. Okay. I'm asking you to perform the test. So, put your left foot on the line. Take your right foot and heel to toe in front of your left. Stand just like that. And watch me as I explain the test. Okay. All right. So, when I tell you to begin, you're going to take nine heel to toe steps on the line. You're going to do a turn and you're going to do nine heel to toe steps back. It'll look just like this. Count out loud. 1 2 3 up to nine. On your ninth step, keep your front foot on the line. Take a series of steps like me. Turn around. Count out loud. 1 2 3 all the way up to nine. Look at your feet. Count each step out loud. Keep your arms down at your sides. And then don't stop the test until you've completed the test. Do you understand the test that I've explained and demonstrated? >> Uh, again, I couldn't focus. >> Okay. Like I said before, it's your right foot's going to be in front of your left. You're going to take nine heel to toe steps on the line. You're going to do a turn and then like I just showed you and then nine heel to toe steps back on the line. Do you understand the test? >> I'm sorry. I just for I just forget stuff when I get under pressure. >> Sure, that makes sense. So just nine heel the toe steps on the line and then do the turn and then nine hill toe steps back. Go ahead and begin. She was then taken to the station to complete legal procedures. There's something to obviously I think we all need a copy of all this stuff. >> Yeah. The mother faced charges including fleeing, eluding an officer, recklessly end [music] safety owi with a passenger under 16, and failure to stop at a stop sign. Under Wisconsin law, she could face up to 18 years [music] in prison and a $26,000 fine. Adults must recognize that their actions directly affect everyone, including [music] themselves. Careless driving, ignoring traffic rules, or failing to cooperate with authorities can have serious [music] consequences.
