Okay. >> The baby's cries served as a powerful reminder that in any adult conflict, children are always the most vulnerable. In [music] that moment, the calm attention shown by officers offered the child a rare sense of comfort and reassurance. >> [crying] >> I didn't think she'd do that. >> I didn't expect that. >> She spit in your face. >> No, but I'm like I got enough distance between her and the car. Get out of my face. >> All right. The mother was charged with felony theft, [music] felony misuse of a credit card, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, and child. [music] Under Ohio law, she may face a combined sentence ranging from 6 months to 5 years in prison, along with fines estimated [music] between $2,500 and $10,000. Above all, this serves as a strong reminder of responsibility, [music] awareness, and compassion that even in the most challenging circumstances, the safety and well-being of [music] children must always come first. Yes, this is the room where the mother left the child. >> My mom never told me that she opened the door cuz I closed the flashlight when I went to bed. I locked it. >> On April 24th, 2022, authorities responded to a call about a boy around 4 years old walking along [music] the street without an adult nearby. When contacted, the child appeared unusually calm, [music] suggesting this may not have been an unfamiliar situation. >> How you doing? I'm James. Nice to meet you. What's your mommy's name? Hi. Are you four already? Yeah. Wow. My birthday. >> When's your birthday? >> August. >> August? >> Yeah. >> Okay. Are you in preschool this year? >> Yeah. You go to Grindstone? >> Yeah. >> Who's your teacher? You live right there. Right. I'm going to go knock on the door. Okay. You're going to hang out with this other policeman. His name's G. Can you say G? >> Yeah. >> Isn't that a weird name? >> Gator Golf. >> Is that Gator Golf? >> Yeah. >> Mhm. Based on the information collected, officers quickly identified the child's residence. >> I'm going to call or might call. I'm going to Yeah, I'm going to go now. >> Hi. >> What's up? >> Well, we have walking down Bella Street. >> OH MY GOD. I am so sorry. I didn't know who that was at all. I HAVEN'T. >> I am so sorry. Is he okay? >> He's okay. >> Do I have to let him do anything? Do I have to tell you? >> Are you serious? >> Are the other kids on? >> No, they are going on, please. >> Yeah, go ahead. >> I'm so sorry. I DON'T KNOW WHAT OH my god. Can I go check this room? CUZ I LITERALLY LOOK, I put him in his room to go take a nap. Mhm. I know that this like the screen door like it was locked like you know like I there's sliding door. It's a sliding door in the back. I can show you. I'll come back. I'll show you. >> Oh my god. This is not what I needed. I >> Where's the mom at? >> My mom went somewhere to go shopping. I He has literally been up like five or six times this morning and I said, "Okay, go take a nap." He was like, "Okay, so what is that? I saw that. I didn't see I like I kind of closed the door cuz his siblings were being loud. I didn't want him, you know, I didn't want to be like loud to take a nap. So, I am so sorry. Oh my god. I had this before. >> While the child being alone and the mother's personal difficulties were noted, a greater concern was the child's living environment, one that did not appear to meet basic [music] standards for healthy growth. Is this where he was napping? >> Yeah. His his bed's right up there. See how this is like >> like this door is locked. I My mom never told me that she opened the door cuz I closed this flashlight when I went to bed. I locked it. So, and he popped this. Yeah. See, it's like it's a lock. >> How the heck did he get that open? >> That's what I'm saying. Like he squeezed himself out. Oakley. No, no, honey. Oakley. It's okay. Popped. Please wait. Children's automatic arrest. >> Well, who's all home? East. >> East and they were home and I was I had them watching TV kind of calm me down. He's in the middle prospect walking his ball. get his shoes out. >> I'm so sorry. >> Let's call mom. Get her home cuz we can't leave them alone. >> I just Did you know you were taking a picture or how did you know? >> I recognized him from when he was a baby. He said yeah. Like your mom Katie said yeah. >> I'm so sorry. >> Yeah. Here you uh follow me. You got your phone? >> Yeah. The state of that room is also horrendous. As well as the front porch, I can't see the rest of the house, but it's probably really bad. So, we're going to be calling children services. Have they been here before? >> It's very out here. I really clean the room. I'm sorry that the room is a mess. But yes, I need to clean the front porch off. My mom is one of those people that is >> groceries. Damn it. I'm like freaking out because this is not what I wanted. I I'm sorry. You you know me. I'm I'm a really good mom. >> I don't know that from what I've seen. You're not. This is not good. That's not good. His face is full snot. He's got dog hair stuck on both cheeks. >> Yes. Because he is literally battling like a headful. >> Well, it's also cuz the room is filthy. So, there's dog hair everywhere and he's sleeping in it. It's I don't know the last time he had a bath. >> He's getting a bath tonight. They get a bath every couple of days and I don't like to dry their skin out cuz their skin tends to get really dried out really quickly. Can I see him, please? >> How old is Easter and Harper? >> Harper. Mom, I need you home. Asher popped the screen open in the back. I didn't know that you would open the door in the morning. He popped the screen open and was walking down cross. The police picked him up and I'm going to get arrested for teller. >> Yes, >> she's under arrest. I'm just letting her see him. I literally just had over here earlier because of something stupid that you said at school. >> What he said? >> He said that I when I like school hand open like and he said I was wrong to his teacher. So the teacher had to call CPS for it. >> Okay. >> Well, CPS has been here. They know I just I literally been battling. I had to pull myself. So I've been kind of behind on cleaning. Like normally I have porch picked up. I have their room picked up. Like the house is normally picked up completely. I'm serious. I'm really >> I've been here a couple times and the porch has always looked like that and when I peek in through the windows it's looked like that. I'd like to believe you. I don't >> I do I don't know how we got through there to be honest, but I >> can I see him? >> Yeah. >> The situation became more serious [music] when the mother mentioned that family support services had previously checked on the household following [music] concerns raised at the child's school. >> How old is Harper? >> Harper is 38 in May and will be 7 and 9. I literally was like just about to >> I took him down at noon. >> So I was 11 had like an hour like you know it's kind of like an hour cuz he was up like five or six times that night feeling well. So >> you can stay with us. She's just going to go get brothers. >> Go get I'm going to go get brother and sister. Okay. Can mommy get a bike going too? Yeah. >> Is this your scooter or is that brother's? >> Hey, go get Where's your scooter? It's kind of awkward, but if you saw the state of that house, this be a great street to grow up on though. Like, dude, I mean, I grew up on Meadow Circle with the culde-sac. It's fantastic. Pretty sure that kid's autistic. We would repeat what you say, but uh she said CPS just got called last week because her ethan had told the teacher that she was thinking, >> it's okay. Hey, it's okay, GUYS. >> Why are you sad? >> It's okay. Grandma's coming home. >> Why are you guys sad? >> She won't be gone that long. Yep. No bond warrant or no bond. >> There's no bond for her. >> It's okay. She's just going to be with us for a night. >> Hello. Hello. >> She told you what happened. Um, so thanks for coming home. She'll be she'll probably be released tomorrow early at maybe 11 or 12:00. >> So, I have to take off work tomorrow. >> Whatever you got to do. Don't I mean, it's got to be a responsible party that can stay. I'm sure you're doing your best. >> Just kind of struggle. >> Mom doesn't come back tomorrow. >> Yeah. Oh, yeah. >> For one day. >> Yeah. One night. Did you guys open it just that much for the air flow? And Okay, makes sense. >> Yeah. normally. Well, the other day I only ended up in business since it was nicer out here. This one's better. >> Sure. >> This one's better. >> Can you do bunny hop with the phone? Right. All right. The mother was charged with childment. In most US states, this charge can carry a potential prison sentence ranging from 1 to 6 years. This stands as a strong reminder that young [music] children need not only care but also a safe, stable, and attentive environment. One where adult challenges do not become a lasting weight on their childhood. [music] At times, adults share their personal challenges in hopes of gaining understanding from others. Yet, behind what is visible, there can be quieter concerns that affect more than just one individual. >> He ran back there scared. If you go back there, you see how the living condition lives in the back of your freaking neck. On April 25th, 2022, authorities responded to a highway incident involving a woman, the mother of a 5-year-old boy. What initially appeared to be a routine situation became concerning when it was discovered that the child had been left at home without appropriate supervision. >> I'm driving. All of a sudden, I noticed her passenger door flies open and they slam on the right. We didn't approach it, but I don't know. I think something else is going on, honestly. >> Good morning. Morning. I worked for the kids on my way to work. >> I just saw, you know, the traffic kind of traffic kind of came to a to a stop and he kind of pulled off and I could see the back of the car. So, I just I was five, six cars back or something like that. >> She said their door flung open and they were trying to shut it and then slammed on the brake, but nobody I didn't see anybody trying to shut any door. I just saw the door wide open. Next thing you know, they slammed on the brakes. >> Okay. Is there someone else in the car with him? guy. >> He was driving. I think his think he said his name is Rod. >> Take him to the hospital. >> All right, then. Let's put the cigarette out. Let's get in the truck and let's go to the hospital. >> Yeah. Already knows. >> He doesn't know. >> Yeah, he does know. >> How? >> The other the other deputy that or the other police officer that stopped out with you called. You already talked with that police officer. >> Yeah, but I didn't give him my dad's phone number. >> Yeah, that that apparently that police officer already knew him. He already called. >> Oh, he knows my dad. >> Yeah. Are you lying to me? >> No. So, why don't you kind of run me through what was going on? >> I was just driving. >> Uhhuh. >> And there was like something I don't know. It was that >> that tire [ __ ] in the road. So, I kind of swerved over to the left like literally right in between here just to go around it so it didn't go over my tires. And somebody from right here. >> Okay. If you want to come to the hospital with us. >> Yes, sir. >> Okay. So, we have to go ahead and leave. >> You also have to put the cigarette out. I got Okay. >> I'm just trying to think. I got bad depression. I got anxiety. >> Ju just flick it. >> Or do that. Go with them if you're going. As far as the accident or crash goes, the other two drivers are or the other driver and the passenger are going to be excited for the uh contributing factor. Uh she already told me that she was swerving out of the way because something was in front of her and that's why she slowed down. That's completely different from what he's telling me though and I'm more inclined to believe what he's telling me. Have >> you met him? If if you're not going with them, then they're leaving. That that's how it's going. >> I just need my husband. >> I just need He lives in Arcadia. I just need him to know. >> They've already He's already been called, >> but he doesn't know. He doesn't know where. He doesn't know is at my friend's house thinks that school right now. I just spoke to him before we left. >> So, do you want to go to the hospital with us or no? >> I need to go to the hospital. >> Do you want to go with us or do you want to go on your own? >> Am I still allowed to go on my own? You can make your own medical decision. You're allowed to do whatever you want to do, but I'm leaving in the next 10 seconds. You want to go with us or do you want to go by yourself? >> Call, please. >> I'm sorry. >> You want your mom to bring you? >> No. I'm saying I >> You want to go by yourself or do you want to come with us? >> I want to go with you. >> What if something happens to him? Then I get to see you guys something happen. >> That's not how that works. All right, then we're going to go back to the ambulance. Take the hospital. Okay. >> Can't nobody give me a phone. I plenty people that have a phone. Are there detectives here? cuz they'll >> Okay, you're going with me. Go. We're going to turn around and go back. This is your last decision. We're going. Cannot make this decision again. >> Okay, >> go. >> Don't Don't go. >> Beyond visible confusion, the mother showed signs of deep fatigue, both physically and emotionally. Ongoing health concerns, daily responsibilities, and life pressures seem to have taken a heavy toll. >> All right, leave her. Leave her here and go. Leave her here and go. Okay, thank you. Yeah. Yeah. >> Got her. Yep. Cool. All right. See you. Appreciate it. Yep. Sit right here. Sit right here. >> I'm trying to, sir. I feel lightheaded as I'm not trying to cause a problem. >> Do you have children? >> No. But All right. So, where's your phone? >> I don't. >> What does it look like? >> It's a iPhone. >> An iPhone. >> It's a black iPhone. It has paint on it. Somebody on front of me. They slammed on their brakes. And I slammed on my brakes. So, I cut over to here on this lane thinking, "Okay, he can zoom right past me." And he got right behind me and smashed in the back of me. hard as [ __ ] Usually my back windowsing busted and then I just saw Star. I just saw Star, sir. I was just trying to get him to work so I can come home and get back. I'll go to the hospital. I just need to make I will risk my life. He's all I have. He can get into anything else. >> Just relax. Just take a breather. So, where is he at right now? >> He's at my friend's house. >> And does your friend is he not there with them? He sleeps during the day. Like like we rent a room so he sleeps during the day. >> Okay. >> And like he said like I'm half asleep so I can hear him. You know if he if he breaks anything but I don't know if he's passed out yet. Drunk. I don't know. >> Have you Have you had anything to to eat or drink this morning? >> No. I just had a miscarriage and I'm still bleeding a lot. I had to have two transfusions a couple days ago. >> You know what day it is today? No. So, you're a little bit tired this morning? >> Yes, sir. >> I better I work I work at a bar and I don't get off till 3:00 in the morning >> and then I don't get home till 4. >> I got to wake up at 6 to take him to work and then I come back and I get ready for school and I take him to school. >> Okay. You would like to go and get seen at the hospital? >> Yes, sir. >> Okay. What I'm going to do is I'm going to try finding your phone. I'm going to call a different rescue for you. Okay. All right. But you can't move from right here. Do you understand? >> Yes, sir. >> Should I get my cigarette? >> No. You got to sit right there for me. >> I got really bad anxiety, sir. I don't want to start panicking. >> Well, don't pan it. Just sit right there and take a breather for me. What? >> I'm sorry. I'm just scared. >> Just take a breather. >> What's going on? >> Is this your phone? >> My phone? Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. >> Oh, this isn't my phone. This is >> What does it look like? It looks just like this, but it's not cracked. >> Okay. >> Because see, this is about to take your car. >> Those are They're right there, sir. On the floor. On the floor. On the floor. On the floor. >> There you go. Thank you. Thank you. I'll sit back. I apologize. I'll sit here and I'll do whatever you want me to. Own company. >> Please go sit down, please. >> If I look, I'm broke. >> Okay. And I There's nothing I can do about >> has it own tow, >> right? But this car can't stay here. >> Exactly. He'll be here in 10 minutes. >> It's not happening. I'm sorry. >> Why? He has his own business. >> Why? Because you're blocking the intersection. This car needs to go now, >> right? And he's right at the street. Why are you going through his stuff? >> Because if you're not taking it with you to the hospital, it needs to be inventoried. I need to give him a list of everything that's in this car. So, if you go back and pick it up and you're like, "Hey, my boyfriend had an iPhone." >> Right. That's what I'm doing. >> I'm not trying to cause you problems, sir. I'm really homeless and broke. Go ask a random person to call on my phone. >> Just relax. >> No, I need to call sir. >> See those? See them? As soon as you get to the ambulance, they have phones for you to call. >> And you don't? >> No, I don't. As soon as you get in that ambulance, >> we're in the same ambulance. >> No, I'm What? >> Y in the same am. >> I'm not going with you. >> And he can't speak for himself. So, he's at home with a babysitter, but she's really older. >> Like, she's an older lady. He's like 80 years old. I don't know if he's okay or not. >> Okay. But you want to go to the hospital, right? >> I do want to go to the hospital. I just want to so he knows to go get my stuff. >> Do you not have to talk? >> I don't know where I went. It was supposed to be in my car. >> Well, your husband's up on the border, right? >> Uh-huh. >> Is he broken? I just gave it to him. >> And it's in his in in that bag that you can bring with you and at the hospital. They have phones for you to use. >> However, what unfolded at the scene was only part of the picture. to better understand the situation. Attention turned to the perspective of a family member. >> You know, she's been to DCF and all that crap and dealt with it. And now, I mean, I know tough love, tough love, but we're going to give it to her this time. Yeah. >> If you know what I mean. If it means taking him from her for a while, we'll do it again. >> Yeah. I mean, he he can't stay here alone. So, I mean, and you're family members. >> I'm the grand he's been with us since he's been born. >> Yeah. >> And that's the only reason I say that cuz she slurred her. I know like the back of my hand. She slurred when she was slur like that. was on that crap before perks and oxies and all that crap. >> I didn't find anything in her car when I on on scene of the accident cuz it was actually towed for damages. It couldn't it was stuck on the bridge is where the accident happened. >> We drove by and we saw the car and then she called us at that minute and she said, "I'm at the hospital." And I said, "Okay, where's Jon?" And she was like, "He's at the house here. Can you go get him the location?" I said, I was like, "What's the address?" But she was slurring so bad she couldn't say the name of the street. And I'm like, "Oh my god." And when we finally saw him there outside is when we said, "Oh, wait a minute. There he is." And he, like I said, he ran back there scared. If you go back there, you see how that little conacy compared to the guy lives in the back here. Freaking nasty. >> Yeah, she's she told me that she's homeless. Um, >> she ain't homeless. She's got a home. That boy has a home. She has a room. She has everything. She tells everybody she's homeless, but she's not. >> Yeah, she was she was awfully mad at me at the hospital. So, I I ended up citing her for the crash and and whatnot. She had some choice words for me on that. Yeah. >> Well, if you look up if you look up the background with his name and her, you see a lot of records will come to our viewing getting along and we're just tired of it. >> Yeah. So, yeah. With and so there was no one home. >> There's nobody here yet, but we haven't left. And God knows how far they left before that because she called me at 7:30. >> Okay. >> And says she was taking them to do, but I don't know how long before that. >> Mhm. >> And nobody still showed up. Now, do we call DCF or you go? >> Okay. So, I I'll call them, but I mean you can always call as well and just >> Yeah. Cuz we we just don't feel safe with him. >> Yeah. No, I completely understand. Uh, >> and we had custody of him for 3 months until she took testimony and she passed back. >> Yeah. She kept telling me cuz she was concerned. She kept she was, you know, saying, "Hey, you know, I need to go and check on my son." Like, "Okay, what's the matter with she told me that he was autistic, had seizures, and >> No, no seizures. Never. Never." >> Yeah. She She told me that, you know, he could have a seizure and die at any moment. I'm like, >> she's freaking lying. >> Like, oh, okay. is like where why isn't he with you? Where is he at? Said, "Well, he he's back home, but I left him with someone who's watching him." I'm like, "Well, if someone's there watching him, what what's the problem?" And she's like, "Well, the person that's there with him. He just sits and drinks all day." Like, "Okay, but there's someone there watching him." Said, "Yeah, but I would just rather check on him." >> No, cuz she knows she's watching. >> So, so she was more concerned that there was absolutely no one there with her. >> There's nobody here. Despite many details being clarified, the mother continued to believe she had acted appropriately. In expressing frustration toward authorities, she appeared to overlook what mattered most, the child's sense of security and wellbeing. >> He forced, >> Kenneth, he forced me. He forced me to take him to work at least there. I swear to God, if you could look at our history, he's a please, sir. He just smacked my face and told me I w I I I wasn't allowed TO BRING HERE. SO SO LEAVE HIM sleeping and take him to work. I swear I wasn't trying to throw him under the bus. I wasn't trying to throw him under the bus. But please, he acts like a victim. He just me in my face. My whole medical career is going to be over. I work really hard. I make $27 an hour. I'm a PSR. Am I going to jail? Please, sir. No thank I cannot lose my career. I worked 10 years to build this career. Please sir, I was homeless before. Sir, SIR. >> SIR, >> I'm going to lose. >> Please listen to me. I know he's calm. I know he's calm and he's trying to victim. >> If you're going to kick this, how am I going to respect you and listen to you? Do not shut me out. I am I am neglected. I am misunderstood. I misheard. He I told him he's abusive. I told you he was abusive. He's stalking me. He still keep looking for me. And when he finds me, he forces me to do stuff. God, please don't take me to jail. Please don't do this to me. He's going to take every little thing that I have. I've been going through this with him for 6 years, 4 years. You can ask my parents. You can call my parents and anything, man. Please, Jesus. Please, Jesus, can you take me to the behavioral center? >> Huh? >> Why would I take you to behavior? >> Because I suffer from depression. >> I suffer from anxiety. I suffer from trying to kill myself. Do you have nieces? If a niece called you and said, "Hey, this man is on me and I'm trying to get away, so I'm going to go to the hospital." What would you do? Take her to jail? >> What part of I don't know anything about your case did you not understand? You are a deputy. How don't you know? >> All I did was show up to drive you to the jail. That's it. I don't know anything about your case. All right. So, don't ask me any more questions about it. >> You were just reading it. I just saw my name. Y'all are some crooked ass people, bro. That's [ __ ] up. Y'all don't care. Why? Cuz I'ming brown. That's why you don't care. Cuz I bet you if it was a white lady, you you'd be all trying to help her. Sir, please do not pull me into this jail. Sir, sir. SIR. [screaming] The child was later found and cared for by her grandfather. The mother was charged with child neglect. In most US states, this charge can carry a maximum sentence of up to 5 years in prison. Beyond legal outcomes, this story reminds us that children do not need grand words. They need timely presence, reassurance when fear arises, and steady [music] guidance they can rely on. Family is meant to offer protection. Yet, at times, it becomes the place where emotional wounds run deepest. >> No, I just told her, "Get the out of my face." She was getting in my face when I told her like, "Bro, get the out of my face. Like, leave me the alone. Like, leave me alone." I didn't even hit her. >> On November 1st, 2024, authorities were called to a residence following a report of a serious dispute between two siblings with a younger brother still underage. The situation began when the older sister returned to a former home to collect mail and [music] quickly intensified after she noticed her brother using items that raised concern for his wellbeing. OC, that's her name. That's delicious. OC in the past has called him names and everything. She just kept going on and on about how like I I shouldn't do this for y'all and I don't know what. And then >> what would she be doing for y'all? >> Yeah, exactly. Sometimes we help her with kids. >> Where where does she live at? >> Pine Forest. All Pine Forest. >> Oh, she lives right over there. Okay. Mhm. And um he basically told her to shut up and she got in his face and said, "Say it to me one more time. Say it to me one more time." And you you can't do anything. You can't do anything. And >> just flat out in the face. And then them and he stood up and then them two went at it. He body slammed him. And then he's got a mark on his neck from where she put his hands around his neck. >> And that's when I basically was like, "No, that's >> and she grabbed him in the crotch area." >> Yeah. Um I witnessed all of it. His glasses were slung on the ground. I mean, his shoes were practically coming off. Then I said something. I was like I was like, "I'm going to fix the phone." I was like, "That's not okay." And then she was like, "You need to stay in your own lane." I was like, "I am in my own lane, but I'm not f to sit there and watch you. You were 22." >> Yeah. >> I was like, "And that is out of all people." And then she had my face. She was like, "You need to stay in your lane." I was like, "No, she me in my face, but I don't have a mark." But she me in my face. >> Um, and that's when I walked outside and I made the phone call. Did she did she leave on her own after that or >> She left on her own, but she he told her like four or five times to leave before she actually left. >> What did she do in the house? Y'all say she ran through? >> Yeah, she ran room needing mail, I guess, or something. >> Oh, she was trying to find mail or something. Why she came here? When's the last time she lived here? >> Uh, good five, six, five, four years. She gets mail. Is she diagnosed anything? Cuz No, she's not doesn't have any mental. Okay. >> No, she's mentally upset. She is mentally, but she had never been diagnosed. >> Okay. >> And she should not have been getting mad here cuz her mother, >> they're different fathers. >> Been gone here a year and a half or almost two years now. >> Yeah. >> And they've been told, "Don't let the male come here." For some reason, it may have. I don't know what she was looking for. I wasn't even here. >> And he's not the same dad as her. What is it formerly stepdad? Are they still married or >> They never been married. >> They never They're never married. >> 15 years. >> Okay. Okay. Then when something happens, she got she went with her man. They've had babies, but she comes back before, but she kind of like broke in to date. She went there and unlocked that door. She didn't knock or nothing. >> Right. Now that OC has she ever lived Have you ever lived Has she ever lived here with you before? >> Yes, she has. >> Oh, she had >> as a as a young child. Yeah. >> Right. How long ago was that? You said five, six years ago. >> How long did y'all live together for? >> All my life. >> All your life. And who does she live with now? >> Uh her her and her boyfriend and her kids. Okay. >> Let's see. Is your hand here hurt? Is that Oh, it's on his elbow. >> Yeah. Let me I'm going have to ask you. It may sound silly, but do you need medical or anything? You sure? Okay. You're not hurt to that extent? >> I grew up I mean I used to go there when I was a little kid, too, and I'm just live right back there and he is doing homeschooling. >> Yeah. >> That happened as of this week. He stopped going to the hospital. >> Has she has Has she ever touched you before like that? Has she never got physical with you before? This is not like her. >> She came here alone. >> She came here alone. She had her kids in the kitchen. >> How many kids does she have? Two. Okay. >> You don't think her boyfriend? >> No, she's I don't think she was just her. >> Oh, just her. Okay. >> But I do know his his daddy I think is on his way home and he wants press. >> So you're not related. You're just neighbor. Like kind of grew up with the family though. Okay. >> She's just like my little brother. >> How's your relationship with her? >> Not the best honestly. It's went went a lot downhill. She just she doesn't give a crap. >> Yeah. Yeah, >> she really only gives a crap about her and her boyfriend and her kids. And if you're not one of them, then you can basically just kick rocks. >> Um, as a kid to me as a kid. >> So, let me let me ask you this. I mean, since you were by her, are you looking to press charges on her? Cuz he doesn't have an option cuz you you aren't a relative and you don't live here. So, that's domestic violence. So, the state picks that up. >> So, I have to do a report. I have to document this. But, you have that decision if you wanted to or not. >> What did your mother say? My mom says she doesn't think I should get into it a lot. So, um, >> but what she's facing with a juvenile is a lot worse than she would be with hers. So, I mean, that's your call. >> Would I have to say yes or no right now? >> Yeah. >> Um, >> we can't change. I mean, >> no. I think I think this more >> Yeah. I mean, cuz cuz the thing is if you do then you can't be a witness to this and then I can't charge you for this either really because >> it more happened to me. I'm fine. There's no marks on me. >> Nothing happened to you. I mean, you got >> I got Yeah. But he got thrown to the ground. Is she a big girl or is she >> a little shorter than me? >> Yeah, just I don't know. >> The boy later shared his perspective, [music] explaining that he acted only to protect himself and had no intention of crossing any limits. According to him, the disagreement stemmed from missed phone calls and the issue of collecting mail. >> All right, I'm back down by your side. So, you said she got you here on the next. >> What did you say this is called the minor? Well, it's domestic violence because they're related and they lived together before. So that's what it caused. >> Violence on the mouth. >> Now you said she grabbed you by around the neck. At any time were you unable to breathe when she got >> No, it was just very uncomfortable. She just had me like pinned very bad >> and that's how she took you to the ground. Anything else on you that screwed? You said she hit you in the face. >> She got slammed right there. >> So just like you're watching a movie. Can you just walk me through like when she comes into the house? >> Uh she came in through the laundry door. She came in through the laundry. >> Where were you at when she >> I was sitting on the couch right there. I was on my phone. She came busting in just asking was I at school or not and I told her no I'm not you know I'm here and she just comes up to me I've been calling you and stuff you know answering and I said you know I've got a new number and then she said she got up in my face and just start arg she said we got closer and I kind of got an attitude with her like spoke up about myself like no I don't like treat you like this and then she basically just stood up to me and said it again and I said no I'm not going to going to like stand up for myself then she me right here and then I stood up and that's when she pushed me and I pushed her back So she you while you were still sitting? >> I was just sitting up just >> then she then you stood up and >> Yeah, I stood up and that's when she pushed me and then she just threw me and just threw me. >> Then when she pushed you, did you fall down or kind? >> Uh I kind of fell down at first then she kind of twisted me and I fell down. So she kind of made me fall down. >> She kind of made you fall down and then what point did she grab your neck? >> When I got on the ground like this, she had me hair like she was kind of getting on the ground. Think about >> Was she striking you at all after that or just the first? >> It was just the first grab and >> and then slam me on the ground. Did you get to hit her at all or anything like that? >> Okay. All right. Did you just have a seat? And when she came inside, where were you sitting? >> I was sitting on the recliner to the left. >> In the same room, though. Okay. All right. And your story is the same as that, basically. So, I was just making sure. >> Can he stop her from coming in here? >> Yeah. So, it'll be tied to this house where his residence is, right? And then wherever he moves after that. So, she can't come here. She can't come in with so many feet of this house or where he works. If he work right now, if she sees him out, now we can't obviously predict the future, but if she sees him there, knows he's there, she has to be one to leave, not you. That's what I would recommend cuz it seems like she's >> that's just odd that out of nowhere >> and isn't she never gotten physical with you. So she was just mostly mad about you not contacting her back with her because of my phone being >> and she needed to try to get mail is what she was trying to check. >> Did she end up taking any mail with her? >> Yeah, she took a lot of mail. >> Okay. And so it's been since what year did she live here? Do you remember? >> I say she moved out 2016 2015. >> So she hasn't been here in almost 10 years. 9 8 years but she still comes here a lot or what? to get her mail and everything. >> What's every now and then? Like once a month, once a >> month or you know and her along pretty well. >> They have her >> but not enough where he's like just come in my house, right? >> Okay. >> And definitely not enough to do this. >> Well, she's going to explain to you how fortunate she is that he's not pressing charges because I'm telling you that's a whole different >> Well, I hope somebody >> I guess she's calling in now. She must have got wind that y'all called in. So, >> well, she's calling. >> Yeah, that's what dispatch is saying. She's calling in. So, I'll go meet with her now and then >> Oh, she's calling in like by us situation. >> She's probably found out or someone told her, "Hey, the cops are out front of the house." And so, she probably won't tell her side is all usually. >> When you meet with her, she will be arrested. >> Most likely, I not 100% guaranteed unless she comes up with some major story of something else. >> She's known um she can lie. >> She's I've caught her multiple lives. So, I mean, she's >> right. It wouldn't surprise me. But I mean that's not I mean I didn't make that phone call for me to sit here and say, "Oh, I'm going to send her to jail." It's only the fact of how young. >> I want to stress to her that she's lucky Rodney. >> Oh, I know. That's what I'm going to Yeah. She's Yeah. She's going to be made aware of that. >> That door is >> I came over here as a kid because ACF was over there at my mom and my dad's place. They they got arguing domestic cases and all that. So, I don't think that's fair. >> That's her grandpa's standing right up there right up there. >> Yeah. >> It'll be your word against hers. And everything you've said is truthful and you got scars to prove it. I don't know that she'll have anything, but did you ever hit her? >> No, I didn't. You know that me trying to fight you back from tossing and turning over, getting up, >> moving her hands, >> trying to get her off. >> She's going to feel bad. I know she is. I hate her. >> That's probably what it is. She probably feels bad. The situation grew more complex when during the [music] argument, objects appeared that could have led to unsafe outcomes. I believe what y'all said. I haven't talked to her yet. I'm just saying what's on the screen. Just don't lie if there is. I'm not saying that you did lie, but don't because the perjury is worse than the crime she's facing. I'm being serious. It's a felony. She's saying somebody pulled a gun on her. >> Uh I had picked I had it on the counter. It was my one cookie. It just came up Lake. I had picked it up, but I never pulled it. Never pulled it. >> Never pulled it. >> What kind of What is it? >> It's a 9 mm. It's in that bathroom. It's not It's not in here. It was it was looked at. >> She looked at it. That's why I picked it up and moved, you know, set it up. >> Okay. So, it was out in the living room where y'all were fighting or whatever. >> Uh, it was in the kitchen. That right there in that kitchen. >> Okay. No reason for her to say believe that you pointed at her or anything. >> Pointed out. I moved it since moved it out of her reach. Just that safe piece. >> So, where you picked it up where? Tell me. >> It was on the counter right here and then we moved center like around table right here. I put it on there and then when she left I went in there and put it my dad. >> Okay. So, >> is it loaded? >> Uh, I think so. When speaking with authorities, [music] the sister offered a different viewpoint, saying her actions were motivated by concern and a desire to look out for her brother. While the situation still required clarification, one thing was clear. Each person held their own version of events and emotions ran too high for calm understanding. >> If you'll just hang with him, I'm going to I'm going to talk to her over here if that's all right. Can you get out for me, please? I just don't I'm scared of what you can grab or stab me with or not saying you would, but it's it happens. So, what happened? >> Okay. >> Did you know we were called over there or did someone tell you? >> I was already there when they were doing it. I was trying to get out the house. >> Wait, is that you were there when we were there? >> No. >> Oh, okay. Okay. >> I knew they were calling. I got this is what happened. I go over there because I don't live there, but all my mail goes there because that's my childhood home. That's where I grew up at. I move a lot, so I just keep my address there. It's just easier. I can just go get it. I walked in on the couch with Payton, which is the 18-year-old. And so, when I walked in, they were hitting their vapes and they were hitting their THC. Hey, so who's the third person? So you had >> it was just us. When I walked in, it was just them two sitting on the couch. >> I got you. Got you. >> And so when I walked in, I looked at why are you not at school? I've been trying to call you off Leman's phone. Why are you not answering? And why are you hitting a THC pin and a vape? I've already told you about this. And he went the off on me. And he was like, "Get the out of the house. You shouldn't even be in here. Get out before I shoot you." I started searching for my mail as he was talking his and I was trying to find my mail because it's in usually two designated places. He got up and I didn't even see his on the counter and so I went to turn around when I seen him get up and he was telling me get the out before I you and this and that. So when I turned around I seen him reach for it and so I just got out of his hand and I just got him on the ground and I just got and I just got him on the ground and I told him like bro you what the is wrong with you? I'm literally here to get my mail. like why are you doing all this? And then that's when P was like, get the off of him. I'm calling the cops. I said, man, I don't give a if he's calling the cops. Who the says that you're going to pull a gun on me, dude. I'm here to get my mail. That is it. >> AND SO THEN HE STARTED coming at me and I and he got on the phone. Get the out of my house. Don't put your hand. I was like, I told Rodney. I told Rodney, I don't give a about none of that. Why pulling a gun on me? Why does he even have a gun in the house? Like be for real. So then I couldn't find my mail and I had my kids in the car because I wasn't there long. I wasn't trying to be there long. That was not my brother. Is that your brother? That's my older brother. >> Were you with or is it just your kids? >> It was just me and my kids. And so then when he when all that started happening, I was trying to hurry up and search for my mail. I couldn't find it. I gave up. I find what did have my kid's name on it cuz it was something with his insurance. So I just grabbed that and left. Payne was outside, which is the 18-year-old. She was outside on the phone and she was talking to me as I was going out the gate. Tell my son, "Oh, you're just going to leave now. you're going to leave now. I just looked at her and I just rolled my eyes and then when I got in the car, I just left. And I got the kids to my uh mother-in-law's house so they're out of my vicinity just in case anything did happen. They weren't going to watch me go away or you know, whatever the case may have been. So then I got them to there and then I came to my brother's house and that's when I told him everything that happened and I told him like, "Bro, like I didn't mean to do that, dude. Like I wasn't expecting him to pull the gun on me." Like >> he had the firearm. He pointed at you and stuff or >> he went to grab it. He was already telling me he was going to shoot me. Like I said, I didn't realize it was in my peripheral until I went to turn around and I realized what he was grabbing for. That's when I got it before he even picked it up. I was able to like get get it out of his hand and like wrestle him for it. And that's when I just got him to the ground. >> Where where was the gun at? >> It was on the counter. On the kitchen counter. >> In the kitchen. Like did anything physical happen with you and the neighbor? Yeah. >> No, I just told her, "Get the out of my face." She was getting in my face when I told her like, "Bro, get the out of my face. Like, leave me the alone. Like, leave me alone." I didn't even hit her. I didn't touch her. I was I got past her. I was trying to get the out the house. >> Let me ask I'm not being rude. I just don't know your family situation, right? So, I haven't even talked. Is it okay that you just go in the house or do they let you in? Or how did how do you get in the house? >> I don't care. Rodney's never cared. I come in there to get my mail all the time. That's nothing new. >> How do you get in the house though? The front which door? >> The back door. It's always unlocked. >> There's a back door on the other side of the residence. the front door. The what we call the back door is the back door on the cardboard. >> Okay, got it. With the one with the doggy door. >> Yeah, that's what we refer to. >> So, you just go in there and that you said he wasn't returning your calls or whatever. >> No, because I was calling him off because my phone is broke. My phone's been broke for the past 3 weeks. My boyfriend, which is why I live with me and my kids, he has Payton and Snapchat. So, I was already been trying to call them all morning and I couldn't get a hold of him and I was like, "Okay, I'll just go over there." I didn't even think he was home, but I know how to get in the house anyways, even if no one's home. Well, you needed to go there to get some mail is what you >> I need my debit card. I just got paid today. My dad find it or you don't know? >> No, I didn't find it. I couldn't find it. But then my mom once like I got to my brother's house and my mom called Mikey, which is my older brother and she was like, "Oi, I have it." And I was like, "I wish you would have." I didn't know that. I didn't know any of that. I did not find that out until we were on the way here talking to my mom and filling her in. >> Did you hit him at all or did he hit you at all in the altercation? >> Yeah, he at me. He's been like he tried to he freaking swung at me and I just lost my and I just got him on the ground. He was trying to wrestle my body lang to the ground to get him pinned down and then when he got up that's when I noticed he was trying to reach for it like to go around. >> So you had already fought before he started reaching for it. >> And that's when I was like bro I got to get the out of here and that's when P was like I'm calling the cops on you. >> So when did he swing at you? Let's go back to that part. >> So he swung on me when I first walked in in the living room. >> In the living room. Yeah. So cuz he was sitting right there on the couch that's facing the kitchen. Right. >> So when he was sitting right there, I walked in and my first question was, "Why are you not answering my call?" My second question is, "Why are you not at school?" And then my third question to Payton is, "Why are you here?" Because, "Why are y'all here? Like, y'all shouldn't even be here." And he said, and he said, "You shouldn't even be here. Get the out. Don't worry about why I'm home." And I said, "Why are you here? You should be at school." And that's when he said, "Get the out. Don't worry about why I'm here. Get out. You shouldn't even be here." And that's when I started going off on him. I was like, "Literally here just to get my meal. Like, chill out." And that's when he was like, "Get out before I shoot you." That's when everything just >> So what? Did he stand up out of the couch? >> Yeah, he stood up. Do you see how short I am? He stood up and that's when he tried to grab me and I just wrestled his ass to the ground. >> You said he tried to on you. >> He tried on me too fast. He tried, but he can't. >> He didn't. So you're not hurt or anything like that. >> I mean, I got my elbow scraped pinning his ass to the ground, but that was it. >> Ultimately, the younger brother's account was supported by others present, while the sister's way of expressing concern was considered inappropriate. Besides, [music] the location where she appeared was no longer a place she was permitted to remain. >> So, your name's Oceanceana. >> Oiana. >> Oiana. Sorry. Unfortunately, you're going to jail. I got two people against you. So, you're going to have to go tell it to a judge. >> All right. Cuz it's domestic violence. They didn't even want to press charges. And you're lucky because I talked to want you in the house. He don't want to press >> lying. He's lying. >> So, I have to take his word. I don't I don't know where the mail going there. >> I know. Listen, it doesn't matter cuz he doesn't want to press charges anyways. I'm just saying if he did then you'd be looking at break burglary breaking and entering. The main problem you're looking at is because of how young uh on me said there was nothing like that. >> Of course they're going to take his side. >> But you got to go tell this to a judge. I I can't get involved in domestic. You know what I'm saying? And the fact that you put yourself in there when you're not even a resident of the of the place. What are you talking? >> Yeah, but you haven't lived there. You haven't lived there in almost 10 years. No, it has not been that long. For real. >> They said about 2016 years ago just cuz you >> No, it has only been 5 years. >> So that's a long time. All right. Anything you need on you like an ID or anything like that you need to go with you? No. Okay. Do you got anything on you? Nothing. You're just You're a female. So I going to search you look like you have much in that. Nothing. >> Not my vape. It's not my vape. It's probably just my pocket. >> Where is your vape? >> Right there. >> Okay. They'll throw that away. So I'd rather you ain't got anything else on you because I'm a lot more easy to work with in the jail, right? Nothing. Okay. All right. All right, let's hop up in here. All right, I know you're upset, right? So, the the the main problems we're looking at is one, you you entered a house where you're really not supposed to be. Except for I know you get your mail, but you don't live there, right? You haven't lived there, you said in a few years. >> No, I moved out 2019, 2018. >> That's almost four, six, five, six years ago. >> Well, that viewers knew how toxic that house was. It seems like it you want to move out, too, >> right? I'm not blaming you for that, but the problem is you entered their house. You didn't even have a reason to be there. You usually do. I don't care what he says. >> We never got alone because I'm not his kid. >> Well, I'm not taking sides. I'm just saying I that's just what I'm being told. Unfortunately, it's his house. You know what I'm saying? And then there's two other people about that. And and the fact that he's got injuries on him to to match the story, >> and he didn't want to press charges if it makes you feel better. He didn't. But in, you know, domestic violence because y'all used to live together. So, it doesn't mean you're guilty, but you have to see a judge about it and they have to decide what they're going to do with your Usually, it's just something where you don't go back to the house or, you know, I mean, something like that. Make sure your mail starts sent somewhere else. You'll see a judge in the morning and you'll get a bond. Do you have anybody that can bond you out? Usually, like nobody, nobody. >> What about your boyfriend? >> I'm sure, but my mother-in-law will. Yeah. But they don't even know what the is going on, >> right? But you you get a call in there. You get you're able to call and everything from there. So, do you need any phone numbers or anything or do you know? I don't have the numbers off the top of my head. My phone is broke. It's been broke for the past. >> So, you can't even access it. >> Yeah. >> Okay. Well, that that's what you're looking at right now. It's just that unfortunately constitutes his child in Florida. When you put your hands on somebody under 18, >> it's just going to be overlooked the fact that he >> I wasn't there for that. That's what I'm saying. But that only the neighbor that Payton girl that you're mentioning said that that never happened. You didn't I'm not saying I wasn't there. I'm not I understand. There's always two sides of the story. You all right? Aside from how this is, huh? >> But you're not or anything, right? >> No. >> Okay. Oh, great. Hold on. I'm going to go. That's your brother there. I'm going to go explain that to him real quick. >> Tension increased when the homeowner arrived and confirmed that she was not allowed to stay, adding further complications to the situation. >> Eventually dropped the charges. He called first, so he gets the advantage. >> Well, unfortunately, we have a a witness there that she doesn't have. You know what I'm saying? Which would be Payton, right? Correct. Which is the the giving him I don't know anything about all that. I'm sure there's there's always two sides to the story. They don't even want to press charges, but based in Florida being a domestic violence, she put herself in that situation. The dad that owns the house saying she's not supposed to be there, but she moved out years ago. But once she gets a bond, you just go through a bail bondsman usually and you pay 10% of whatever. So, if it's a $1,000 bond, you pay $100 to the bondsman. She gets out and then she has to go to her court date. Whichever court date? >> Yeah. Yeah, she's back here. Don't sick fingers or anything. >> No contra. Sometimes they bite. >> I'm going to call your job. I don't know if they help. I will call him. >> Yeah. At least have to give them a heads up. That way they can get a replacement. >> Hey, that's not the end. She'll be out in 2 days at most and she'll have a bond tomorrow. Just depends on how quick one of y'all get her out. Okay. >> Okay. Good. All right. The woman was charged with cruelty toward a child. Under Florida law, she could face penalties of up to 5 years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000. This story offers an important lesson. Care is not defined by intention alone, but [music] by how it is expressed. Without calm and the willingness to listen, even concern can unintentionally leave impacts on those we hope to protect. Most in another family, children had to face deep caused by items meant only for household tasks. >> When I my kids, I don't go, I'm just going to you until you know you can't save them. On March 19th, 2025, Dell City police received a report about a father who had been the subject of previous complaints was accused of using a household item in a way that caused concern for his daughter's safety. Officers quickly arrived at the scene to investigate and clarify the case. >> Yeah. Where they at? Were they fighting? >> Somebody fighting? >> No. People were fighting in here. here though. >> Yeah, somebody accidentally get their hand hit with a hammer or something like that. >> Here? No. Why? >> That's just what somebody called and said. Who else is here with you? >> Oh, my daughter. >> Did she come out here? >> Kelly. >> Hey, what's going on? >> Nothing. Okay. Your hand hurt or anything? >> She's got a rash on her hand. >> What about your other hand? Looks a little swollen. Bruce, what happened? >> Well, Dad, will you go have a talk with my partner over here? And >> Given the seriousness, police separated the father and children to take statements. >> Tell me what's going on. >> I don't know. Got a phone call from who? >> Tell me what's going on. >> I don't know. >> Is he listening? are. >> I can tell you're upset. >> You have to be You have to be honest with me. Okay. So, I can help >> with a >> Yeah. What's more talking to her? Anything happen today? >> Nothing. We've been cleaning the house. We were arguing, but we were just Nobody. >> I mean, I thanked her. >> Okay. Hand. No, I was uh my hand and then we were talking and then uh I had I had a I did have a but it was just the back of that. >> Did you hit her with it? >> I with it. Yeah. >> In the face or the butt? >> No, just her arrest. >> Okay. >> After collecting enough evidence and testimony, the father was placed under police supervision, he immediately began offering excuses for his actions. You >> arrest with >> Yeah. Well, the back of it >> detained my back corner real quick. You're being detained. Okay. >> Okay. >> Cuz I ask you what happened and you said nothing happened like that and now you're saying >> no we were we were fight we were arguing in the kitchen. >> But when I ask you what's going on and you act like you have no idea and you're like oh and now all of a sudden like oh yeah know I accidentally hit her hand with a hand. >> No. So no. Come on. Come on now. Right. I was a police officer. I get it. I get it. >> Where were you police officer at? We woke up. >> Okay. This is what happened. >> So you know that you know that cops get lied to all the time, right? >> I know. I'm I'm I'm trying to assess this is what happened. >> We were arguing this morning. >> Did mom here? >> My mom's not here. No. >> No her. >> No. Okay. >> We were in the kitchen. >> Okay. >> We were got into an argument. We kept fighting. >> So I had a and I on the wrist with the butt of the That was it. We discussed it. We had a talk. We apologized. We We all fought everything and then continue cleaning the house. >> Is that usually how you discipline your kids with? >> I didn't with the the butt of the hammer. I her I hering is completely different when your daughter's hand is up and up. >> Well, like I said, the other part was she has a rash. >> That's not a rash. Okay. >> Again, I understand you're a police officer, but at the same time, I do this every day. >> I got it. I agree with you. >> I was born tonight, but I wasn't born last night. >> I met a queen. >> Yeah. >> I the wrist with with with the butt of the hat and that was it. >> 940. You also show one detain. Bro, I mean it wasn't wasn't to take it. You all right? >> You sure? What's your hand? >> Right here. >> All right. But >> I just on the arrest. >> Okay. >> So, all right. >> Hey, Neil LT, we open up your truck. I'm just going to put you in the back. Okay. Again, you're not under arrest or anything like that. Okay. You're just being detained. Okay. >> How long were you cop when we woke up? >> Oh, about a year and a half. Inside, police also worked to reassure the children. At the same time, medical staff arrived to check the daughter's health. Your hand right here. Right here. >> That's my house. All right. Take them inside. You got a cell phone? >> It's okay. >> You got a phone? >> It's okay. Everything's okay. I promise. >> How can you call mom? >> I know her phone number. >> You know number is there a phone in the house? We're just We're just going to pop it at you. Okay. So, >> just show me how we heard it. All right. Show them. We got >> Where'd you get that? >> Right here. >> Oh, right here. Where'd you get that at? See it? You going to check it out? Just want to make sure you're okay. Just right there or anywhere else? >> What do you say? He said she had a rash, but I don't I didn't look like a rash. It's obviously got some bruising from >> uh Yeah. Yeah, I mean it looks like she got especially the little one or the middle one. And then she said that she said that uh she got today and the one in the black got the little one didn't. But he said she said this has been going on for like over a year. >> Yeah. >> And so he he has the little one before um as far as being a rational. >> Yeah. Like I can discipline your kids, but eating your kids is uh far from disappointing. >> Yeah. And he said the mom knows about it. He's done it with the mom here before and then the mom told him to stop and he stopped for a long time and now she said it just happens when the mom leaves. >> It's probably going to be a joint response. >> Oh, really? >> Yeah. Like dad legitimately. >> You left yet? >> Yeah. So, we'll probably I don't know if X-ray division wants to come out here and look at it, but dude's a retired police officer. Are you serious? >> I called Boat Ride to see what he wanted me to do and I was like, "Oh, you're already out here." >> Hello. Are you working? Okay, this is going to be this is going to be a good child use like fresh injuries. Dad was the kids with a hand. >> Yeah. >> The investigation revealed multiple instances where the children were subjected to unsafe disciplinary practices. Well, >> oh snap. >> Hey, Mel. >> Mel, come real quick. >> Would you please? >> Let's go. Go in the creek. I'm going ask him real quick. Hey, where's mom at? >> She's working. Where at? >> In uh with >> Tunko? >> Yeah. >> What hospital? >> Um she's sleeping right now. You want to You want me to call her? >> You got the phone? >> Yeah. What happened? >> You got the phone on you? >> No, it's in my house. >> Uh >> you can come in with me, huh? >> I'll grab it. >> You know me. >> All right. I got it. But it's in my case, man. >> I got you. >> All right. Just hold on one second. All right. >> You know me, man. >> I got you, man. Right now, it's business. All right. >> I got you. >> All right. Hold on one second. All right. >> All right. Car seat with a normal seat belt than it is to be bouncing around. >> What's wrong? So, I told her I don't know. >> Hopefully, mom will come. Okay, it's okay. >> We're going to play with the sirens. >> Oh, here it is. >> With sufficient evidence, police took the father into custody. During questioning, he began to describe the way he and his wife had been disciplining the children. methods that raised serious concerns for their safety. >> What was in there? >> How do you typically do discipline as a family? >> Like as a like my wife is the screamer. >> Mhm. >> And my wife is How do I put it? She's the screamer, but she's the left field. You know, let's say like the little one has her makeup and then she'll be like, "Give me your makeup stuff. I'm not giving it to you." You know, instead of talking to her and you know, let's say don't watch TV or doing something else. You take her nightlight. Okay. Then you take another thing. Then you take another thing. It gets to a point where she'll basically be like, "Well, I don't care. You're going to just take everything. I'm not going to listen to you." So care. So, like I said, they have they're like two cats fighting each other and it's like, okay, but no, like I said, I'm more of the disciplinary, you know. I'll be like, all right, there's no TV. Why? Because of this, you know, I try to talk to them. >> Mhm. >> This is why you got in trouble. We're going to learn from this. You know, you know, I try to explain to them like, you're getting older. You know, these are things that you have to take pride in bed, your shoes, your clothes, your appearance. I have to tell her to take a shower, you know, like little things. But again, like I said, now the old the two little ones see it and they're like, "Well, we're not going to do it either." You know, so that's the power struggle now that is, you know, and >> he stressed he was a former police officer and said the discipline was to teach self-control, but faced with the children's, the excuse was unconvincing. >> I don't drink in front of my kids. I never liked it. I don't smoke. If I have a beer, I have a beer here and there. I grew up in a bluecollar town. Like your dad went to drink and you didn't see him till 8:00 at night. Like I never wanted my kids like that. I would say I grew up in a broken home, but I was like I didn't want to be that dad, you know? I wanted I locked out. I was able to raise my kids [clears throat] >> from day one. I don't know about you guys, but to be able to stay home with your kids, still have a job and do stuff, be able to do everything, you know? Like it got to a point where the school didn't even know I was married. Like my wife showed up and they were like, "Who are you?" Because we have different last names. We got married and they were like that he's not married. Who are you? because they didn't know who she was because I did everything with the events, the awards, daycare. Like I said, everybody knew it was me. Like I said, I'm I want them to learn from their mistakes because God forbid I'm not here. Like when I was a kid, my mom made me cook and clean cuz when I get I got to college, I know how to cook and clean. Kids were like, "I don't know how to do a wash." Yeah. >> So I make my daughter wash the clothes. Now, do I brush my kids? Yes. Do I am I one of those like I'm just going to be a you? No. And that's the infuriating part about this whole thing is it makes it sound like I'm a monster that I my kids. Do I kids? Yes. Will I use a Yes. A spoon? Yes. I mean, we all got cracked here and there with a wooden spoon. Am I going to do it till I eat them and they can't sit or walk or they're No. Let me wap them a couple times. Okay. Did you learn your lesson? Okay. I mean, it's gotten to a point where the two little ones I say I'm going to go get my They're like, "No, no, no, no, no. I don't want them to me, but I want them to have a learning lesson and be like, "Hey, you screwed up. Here's ament." And I mean, that's like I said, the best that I try. I mean, unfortunately, we're in this circumstance, but when I push my kids, I don't go, "I'm just going to you until you know you can't say no." You know, I'll give them a couple laps, but then I sit down and talk to them. >> Mhm. >> This is why I punched you. We're going to learn from this so we don't do it next time. You know, and I'm one of those like I'll say it once, I'll say it twice, but I'm going to get punched. I'm not one of those like I'm just going to come around you and you in the head and be like you're an idiot. You know, I try to be a positive my kids is positive. Reassuring them, hey, everything's going to be okay. You're great. Did you have a good day? I tell them every morning I get in the car when we leave. You're smart. You're beautiful. You're going to be right there when you get out of school. How'd you do today? Let's go over your homework. You know, so as far as I'm the enforcer, but I make a learning process. >> Yeah. I don't just them and say, "Well, take it. You act it out. You got here you go." But my has a reason. I don't just say, "I'm just doing it. Don't ask." I you for this. This is what you did. Next time, we're not going to do it. But I've told my kids, you're going to do it a thousand times and you're going to get a thousand times. I still love you. I'm not going to get I'm going to get mad at you, but it's a learning process. We will get past it. an AVC. >> Right after he recounted what had happened the day before and it seemed everything started with his daughter. >> Tell us about what happened yesterday. I got up. She had made eggs for herself. No problem. Don't have an issue with it. We were cleaning because the day before we had gone to the zoo, everything was fine. You know, day before that, we went to a circus. Everything was fine. But since she hasn't been on her meds, she has times of I would say anger or like I'm not going to do this. I don't care. You know, so I was like, "All right." So anyway, we were we were cleaning. No problems. I was doing the dishes. I look over the stove's on. So I, you know, told her I was like, "Come here. I I want to show you that." She lost it. She started freaking out, screaming. I'm not coming here screaming, cursing. I was like, "We're not going to do this. we're, you know, we're going to discuss this. So, I showed her, I was like, "The stove is on. You're going to start a fire." The pilot was low, but I'm like, "If this fuse goes out now, that's carbon monoxide. You could kill us and we not know." So, the problem with her and that we've learned through therapy is she doesn't like to get yelled at. She just closes up like a shell. And it's like, but the problem is is the therapist has told her, the psychiatrist have told her like, "If you're going to get in trouble, you're going to get yelled at." Like you have to accept that's life, right? >> She doesn't accept. Like it's like you cannot yell at her. So she closes up like whatever. So anyway, we had a little we went t for t that ended. She was upset now that because I yelled at her. So I was like you could blow this house up and so like I said it was a learning process. I was like make sure turn this off. I was like I want to be able to trust you but now I'm not going to let you cook if I'm not home now. I'm going to have to watch you. So she got upset. So my kids take stuff and leave it in most random places. >> So I thought So I was like, "All right, I'm going to take the back into the room." So I was carrying the I don't know how to describe it. I guess that the head of it >> in my hand and then I call it the butt of the going. So I'm walking around, you know, I took it and I hit her in the hand with it. Not her. So she got mad. So then she was like, "Well," started getting all defensive, started cursing and well, I was like, "We're not going to do that." Then, "Oh, you're not going to do anything." But so I hit her again. I was like, "We're not going to do this." I was like, "We're not going to fight. This is your sister. Oh, you don't do anything to them." Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah like all this like putting me down. And so I on the forum I said we're done. He also tried to use the struggles of raising children to portray himself as a good father despite the visibleies on her butt a baby twice. Start crying. Okay. Like we're done. I'm done with these comments to your sisters. They're mean. They're not, you know, a. So anyway, we were done. Everything was fine. I went about my business. She was cleaning. She was upset. So I gave her space. I'm like, "Cool down. Talk about it later." I told my daughter this is the [clears throat] rabbit hole we're going down. >> Mhm. >> When DHS came when we had the issues at school when she was going to when she was going to middle school where then when she got went to the hospital three times. I'm like if you keep saying that they're going to put you in longer and longer and longer. Then she kicked out my my wife. Then a couple months ago before break she came to me and said I can't find my science book. Somebody stole my science book and threw it in the trash. My daughter will look at you and say, "I didn't do it." and not blink a lot. Like she could kill somebody and be like, "I didn't do it." And have a knife in her hand. Like we had problems with her with homework. She would be on her laptop. I did. I did my homework. I did my homework. I go in her history. She was looking at YouTube for the last 4 hours. Never did homework. Straightfaced. That's why we had an issue with DHS because of her line before. So she embellished a lot of things and became well this. What was really this? And like I said, she could say one story. You got to take it with a grain of salt. But I believe her. >> Yeah, >> she is my daughter. I don't care if she did it. I believe her and then whatever happened. But do I try my best to be the best dad? Do you try the best to be the best dad, best police officer? You try to make make the best of how can we fix this situation? I had plenty of calls where I would go to a domestic and it was the same call that you know the same family and you were like you knew the parents that and you were like you are the most horrible parents. I respect you guys. We've all done this. We're all [ __ ] I don't want to be that person be like, "Oh, >> right." >> You know, as a parent, what do I do? >> Let's pause right at an hour. Let's drink your water, relax for a minute. We're going to grab a drink. >> Yeah, give us a second. Just take a couple breaks. >> Yeah, we'll be right back. >> The father was formally charged and now faces serious legal consequences under Oklahoma law. Parents should use positive, patient, and respectful methods of guidance instead of violence. A child's growth should not be built on, but nurtured with love and understanding. Just because some chores were left unfinished, a 12-year-old boy had to face an unexpected electric. On July 24th, 2024, Columbus police in Ohio received a call about a 12-year-old boy mistreated by his mother for not finishing chores. They quickly arrived at the scene to investigate and take witness statements. >> Hey, I'm Lisa. >> I'm Jason. Nice to meet you. >> Nice to meet you. >> Can you explain what happened? Sorry. >> Yeah. Yeah. So, I I live in this neighborhood for a walk and he came riding up to me super fast and he stopped and he was crying and he's like, "Can you help me? My mom uses me. I need help. She's going to come off of me." And I looked at his back and I'm like, "Oh my god." I'm like, "Yeah, come with me." So kind of hiding called the police. He's been talking to me. I've been asking questions. I used to be a probation officer. So >> understand his mother. >> He's single parent. Yep. >> Babysits kids in her home. So that's scary. Won't let him eat unless he does his chores. She hasn't eaten since last night. Been abusing him for years. She smokes and other drinks in the house. She acts crazy. Police approached the 12-year-old sitting nearby, but he appeared hesitant and uneasy, still seeming afraid to share the truth. >> What was caused by an extension? >> And what was the last time this happened? >> Yesterday, I think they did. >> All right. Why don't you talk to your officer here? >> Hey, I'm Jason. What was your answer? >> Hey, I'm sorry to hear about what's going on. >> Yeah. >> How long has this been going on? >> 6 years. Okay. >> Yeah. Really? >> Okay. I got you. >> We're here to help. What we're going to try and do is try to figure out what's going on. Okay. Forgive me. I just got here. It sounds like you've already explained what's going on to her and it sounds a little bit to the medics as well. I do have to ask a couple of questions though. Does that make sense? It's probably going to be the some of the same questions I see. I ask some of the same questions that I Does that make sense though? So, really quick, from what they've told me, it sounds like, is it your mom? got your ankles on. It sounds as though she has hit you a couple of times with extension and other things and that's what caused these on your arm and your back. Is that correct? >> And the last time that this happened was today or last night. >> And so you left because you didn't want to get >> and where do you live? >> It's okay. No worries at all. We're going to try and figure out that correct address and then we're going to go from there. Does that make sense? Okay. Okay. So, really quick, I want to let you know you aren't going to have to deal with her for the rest of the day. Okay? We're going to figure out what we can do for you from there, but you don't have to deal with her for the rest of the day. Okay? Really quick, is there a family member in the area that we can get you to that you feel safe with? >> It's okay. I know this is a lot, so take your time. Okay? >> Nope. She's not going to come at all. She's not going to come near you for the time being. Okay? And you don't got to worry about that right now. It might be her sister, but I don't know. >> Okay. Do you know? So, is it your aunt? >> Yeah. >> Is your aunt's aware of what's been going on? >> No. >> No one is. >> Okay. We're going to try and make contact with your aunt and see if she's okay with you staying with her. Uh, and we're going to go from there. Okay. >> After calming him, authorities noticed signs that raise concern for his well-being. And they quickly contacted his aunt to take him to a safe place. >> No worries at all. We can figure that out for you in a second. Really quick, you said your mom's name was Thank you very much. I appreciate it. My first concern is making sure you're okay. There are some what looks like open wounds on your I don't know if you guys want to do anything with that. >> What I see I say just let us take him down to children's. Let them evaluate him. We can see what's going >> Yeah. Let me let me uh really quick before you leave. This is going to sound a little strange, but I'm going to get a couple photos of your back if you're okay with that. Does that make sense? >> Okay. Would you be okay if you did that as the medic so private completely okay? We're going to do that and then we're going to go from there. Does that make sense? >> You guys are secure bike. >> We'll make it work. Yep. We'll make sure that that's safe for you. And so what they're going to do is they're just going to be able to address some of those concerns for you. Do you by chance know your aunt's name? You said that she lives in center. >> Gotcha. Do you have a phone number or an address by chance? >> No worries at all, man. Is she older or younger than your sister? >> She's younger. >> Younger. Gotcha. Okay. I appreciate you. We're going to get you the back to medic. We're going to keep going from there. Okay. Yeah, of course you can. >> The boy was taken to a medical vehicle for care. At this point, the truth became clearer. The mother had used disciplinary methods that authorities determined were harmful and unsafe. >> What's the pressure looking like? >> Really quick, doing great. Uh, I am going to ask if I can get some of those photos really quick. Thank you very much, sir. Make sure you hang on a sec. I'll step around. Is that correct? >> Yeah. I haven't eaten since yesterday. Last night. Yeah. >> Since last night. >> Yeah. >> Gotcha. And is that common that your mom won't let you eat for extended periods of time? >> No, it's after I finish my chores. I have like morning tours and then I have like 12:00 middle of the day tours and then nighttime tours. I normally do my toys like letting the dogs out and taking the trash in the morning. Do you understand your rights as I've explained them to you? >> Yes. >> Having these rights in mind, are you willing to answer my questions now? >> Yes. >> Okay. All right. This story is a reminder that timely observation, intervention, and cooperation with authorities can be crucial to a child's safety. Sometimes a single decisive action from someone nearby can save a life. Although each story unfolded under different circumstances, a roadside situation, unsuitable [music] living conditions, a sudden incident, or a family dispute, the common thread is clear. Children are the ones most impacted, not because they are at fault, but because adults failed to prioritize their well-being. Laws may differ from place to place, but one principle remains universal. A child's safety must always come first. Thank you for watching today's video. If you found it meaningful, please like, subscribe, and turn on notifications for future content. See you next time.
