In policing, doing a civilian ride along is part of the job. It can be quite rewarding. In fact, I did one prior to hiring on to my department in Las Vegas. And it's almost normally a mundane, boring shift. It almost never includes witnessing a vehicle heading directly at your patrol vehicle at a high rate of speed and then colliding directly with you. This is one of those. >> We'll talk to you in a little bit. Stay seated. >> Stay seated. this car. >> Let me talk to witnesses. >> Watch out. Let's make sure. >> Okay. Well, I'll put Dave. >> Hey, stay safe. Stay stay. >> Hey. Yo. >> Hey. Stay there. Stay there. Don't move. Just sit back in your >> Stop it. >> So, the deployment of airbags, a lot of people, if you have not been in an accident, don't know how actually violent that feels when that airbag comes out and deploys. It's happened to me. I've witnessed them deploy. They come out between 100 to 200 mph. They can cause abrasions and other minor injuries. definitely would rather have an airbag, but understanding what happens in the aftermath of engaging either the person that was driving one car or the other car is really interesting because [music] you have to check for those injuries. >> Have a seat. >> Have a seat. >> Sit down. >> Stop it. Sit down. >> Hey. >> Okay. Something interesting to look at when you see these kinds of scenes as an officer. Okay. Look at the different gloves that the officers have on. One of them has on gloves that can protect his hands from communicable diseases. The other officer looks like he just has regular gloves on. With all of that blood that's on the suspect, the officers can get their uniforms, gloves, whatever, contaminated. And they still got to deal with this guy and he's not being cooperative. I remember being on scenes and dealing with that stuff. And it's really challenging cuz you have to control the person, but at the same time, you don't want to get that stuff on you. It's something you have to deal with. >> You know what? I checked in with your officer. >> Hey, sit down. >> I'm not even doing anything. area little. >> Can you tell us to stop, please? >> Have a seat. >> Have a seat. >> Then we'll talk. >> I was walking on centuries. >> Probably from That's probably Oh, for sure. It's probably between alcohol and >> stay awake. Stay awake. >> Stay awake. >> No, no, no. Just stay seated. >> Stay seated. Just stay awake. These officers being really professional with this guy considering he seems like he's intoxicated and he had it on wreck with one of their officers. >> We want to ask >> I was already there. >> You're already where? >> With [clears throat] you. >> Affirm. Did we ever get anybody to check on the other car versus tree? >> I was already with you and you were already with >> before I checked the area. >> I didn't see anything obvious near >> didn't look super close though. There is an ambulance, >> bro. Cuz you know that it wasn't even >> That's it for ambulance, bro. >> 05 to 03 pretty good here. >> I can go down there. I'm not going to tell you again. >> All right. So, tell me why I can't. >> Yeah, because I think we got this pretty low, >> bro. I'm not doing this. >> Sit right here. Stay safe and we can have you get checked out. >> Bro, you're the only one that did this around me out. >> What are you talking about? >> You hit your head. You're confused right now. Just stay seated. Stay seated. >> So, let me put you in handcuffs if you don't stay seated. >> Seated. I noticed that he went into Spanish and if you don't speak Spanish, he saying don't touch me in the effing face. Sometimes people on booze can be aggressive like that. We've seen that many times before. But other times it could be booze plus something else. I'd be looking out for that as well. >> Seated. Stay seated. >> Wait. >> So, there's an accident down the street. >> Um, I will move my truck, but I need you to just pull into the parking lot up here on the right. >> I'll pull the parking lot. Go >> cuz I don't want you have to back up the trailer. Give me a second though. >> I don't understand Spanish. >> Yeah. So, here's what the >> No, no, no. >> Calm down. >> No, no, no. >> I know. >> Hey, bro. >> Hey, I'm going to move my car, but I need you to pull into the parking lot for pick and save. Turn around and I'm shutting down the road here. Okay. >> I think so, but he's also He hit his head hard >> and he's not. >> Hey. Hey, relax. 03 want you mark the driver detained for right now. >> So look at the situation we're in. This guy's being aggressive. The officers have to use a small degree of force. Now if it gets really really violent, how do you distinguish between the force from the accident, from the officers or from the suspect just doing something to himself. That's why body cameras are very important and their professionalism is key here. >> Dude, you go ahead. >> All right. So, I'm shutting down the road. That's why I stopped here in the middle. Okay. >> I didn't understand because we go up and go around. >> I need you to either U-turn or go into the pick and save lot. Okay. >> Okay. Yeah, that light back there didn't seem to be >> Yeah. Um, so just do me a favor. Don't go down to where all the lights are. Okay. >> Get out of here before someone else it up. >> Yeah. >> Are you trying to turn? Hold on one second. >> Thanks, Mark. Terry, are we having the county come do this? >> Um, >> dude, >> I'm asking you like, >> please, man. Dude, like if you want me to tell you that, like, I respect you, dude. >> I want you to get checked out by the ambulance. What? I want >> I respect you to do that. >> So, there is an accident down there. The road is shut down for now. Um, >> would you want me to try and go straight or >> Yes, please. >> Do you want me to go now? Uh when the light turns green. Okay. >> Let me get your pressure. Do >> you have any weapons on you? >> Um >> come on. Let's go. Jesus Christ. Do you not see the biging arrow? Do you not see the big arrow? >> He had his head. >> Oh yeah. >> Dead here. So >> what's your name? >> Spanish. >> So he said, >> he speaks English, too. >> What's your name? >> Tell me what your name is. >> Sergio. I'm Adam, one of the paramedics. Are you hurt? >> I guess. >> Where you hurt? >> Why you hurt? Hey, where you hurt >> with this? I haven't done anything. >> Okay, >> we're going to take you to the hospital. We're just going to figure out what your injuries are for right now. Okay. Have you been drinking today? >> You're not. >> You're not drinking. >> You're not. >> You're not what? >> You're not what? No, no, stop. Stop. >> What's your name? >> Sergio. >> Sergio, what happened? >> He already told me that he was trying to give me some give me >> with like that. >> You want to just get a So, he hit head on going the wrong way. Is that what happened? >> Uh, my understanding. >> No, man. Totally like >> Have you guys done breathies or anything? >> No. >> No. We're trying to Trying to get him to stay in the car >> but he just keeps getting out and then he got up. >> But have a seat here. >> Turn. Yep. Have a seat. >> You not see the big arrow? Jesus Christ. >> So we hear the frustration of the female officer. I have been in that situation as a rookie having to direct traffic and it's not a lot of fun, especially if it's cold or super hot. But from a the civilian perspective now that I'm retired, I get how it can be a little bit confusing for people and they don't know which way to turn. It's a whole bunch of lights. There's an accident. people are turning all different directions. So, giving people a little bit of leeway in these situations because sometimes there are secondary accidents. And what are the four things that for sure the officers are doing? Checking for the injuries of the people involved in the accident. They have traffic to direct, evidence to collect, and then they have to conduct a criminal investigation while all this is going on. So, it seems like a static [music] scene, but it's really dynamic. What do you want us to do? Switch the cuffs to the front. >> You got it. You want me to do it? >> I got all over my hands. So do I. But I'll switch. Hold on. Stop. >> Oh, for one more, please for uh >> Come on, bro. >> Go. Go. Jesus Christ. Go. You go. Why did you not go? >> Like on that street. I'm just trying to get her home. >> No, but you can't get You'll have to go around to get to High Road. You can't get there this way. There was a head-on crash. You can't get through. >> Hey, just just stop moving. Okay, relax. >> We're trying to help you, >> bro. I was >> just relax. Kick your feet. >> I was standing here and like like been >> spitting a lot too. >> Put your legs up here. >> Get your legs up here. >> Hey, bro. >> Legs up. >> Do you not see me? Do you not see me? Do you not see me? >> I I get the frustration, but it's really interesting if you juxtapose her frustration with the patience that the officers are giving to the guy who head on their officer. It's really interesting. I get the frustration, but sometimes people do get confused and people pay attention when you get to these scenes. Slow down and look for the direction of the officer. It's a two-way street, but the onus is always on the professional. >> Okay, now that that's on, that'll help a little. Copy. I was just going to get some of the property for the jail, his ID and stuff. >> Can I get an ID? >> Yeah, it's in here. So, I'll just pull it out. And this is what he has. >> Just an update. There will be some possible 55 issues with our driver. So, if you want to let county know that as well, >> Terry, I'm just going to take >> County. But I'm going to leave everything else is in his pocket on the chair. I don't know if county wants that, but we'll take this with >> Is stuff in the side doors yours or no? >> The gloves and the hat. Yeah, everything is in the back seat. >> I got your body cam. We'll hang on to that. >> Okay, got it, buddy. >> So, we're sitting in the chief's car right now. We're just kind of waiting for another ambulance to get here. So, >> but we're okay. >> Your vehicle's a good position. Want to take Sean's vehicles up? >> Oh, your vehicle. >> Okay. No, that's fine if you >> That way we don't have to move your vehicle. We want to keep it there. >> Okay. >> So, the airbags went off. We saw it coming and uh saved me here. Say hi to [laughter] >> Hey, Brian. >> Yeah, they're mine, but they fell in the blood and everything else. So, they're junk now. I didn't know the wind was going to blow him off. >> 4389. Just advising there's possible 1055 issues. >> So, we let him hit us head on cuz if he would have turned it would have hit the side of the car, you know, but we don't know what's going on with this dude. I'll keep you posted. I just want to let you know that we're okay. >> Unreal. I just still keep picturing that in my head and it's like this isn't happening, you know? I thought I must be a Jinx. >> No, you're not a Jinx. This guy's 55. So, I mean, it's all all on him. He was going to shoot through this intersection and probably have a collision if it wouldn't been you. So, I'd rather have it be this squad controlled by >> You're going to be fine. I'm just glad you guys are just little scrapes some bruises. So, we'll get the going to be here in a second. I'll show the store. >> Okay. >> Oh my god. >> The smoke inside the car is what got me. Oh, I know. >> And I couldn't get out because of the airbag. >> I saw you cut it. >> I had to grab my knife and cut it to deflate it just so I could get out. And then >> I couldn't get the door open far enough. >> I know. Well, that's why I was just like unbuckle yourself like let's lay it play by play and not not panic cuz I was that smoke that was spilling in. >> It's hard to breathe, isn't it? >> Yeah. I was like, oh my god. I was like, did this starts on fire? Like that is not how I'm going to go out. I'm sorry this happened. >> Do you know did all the airbags pop? Do you know what popped exactly? All four side curtains, >> everything, back seat, everything. >> How are you? Do you need something, man? >> Dude, my head hurts. My chest hurts. I need to go to the EMS as well. Or >> let's get you down the hospital. >> Probably at 30, 35 mph and hit us head on. So, I was trying to maneuver, but if I would have maneuvered to the left, but then that would have hit her side door. And so then I just decided to take it head on and leave it at that. >> It's higher and that brush guard saved a lot of other things from coming into that into your spot. Could have been a lot worse, brother. So, we see here a head-on driver who is believed to be under the influence of some type of substance, likely alcohol. I heard them say 55. So, that means that he like he's likely intoxicated. The civilian ride along was a dispatcher, so she understood some of the dangers that go along with riding in a police car. Never does one think that there's going to be a car coming right onto you. And it's really kind of heroic and presence of mind for the officer to know not to turn his vehicle so that they would get t-boned and the dispatcher would get hit. So, shout out to him for doing that. This guy obviously got charged with what appears to be this owi with injury, which is very, very serious. And it appears he also had a revoke license at the time. We all have encountered or known someone who would potentially get behind the wheel of a car while drinking or consuming some type of substance. That's the type of person that needs to see this video cuz I can tell you when he sees this video, he had no idea that he was likely acting that way, but his behavior likely had some indicators before. And that's the person that needs to see this video. So like this video, send it to a person who could potentially fall down that rabbit hole.
