On October 7th, 2024, Walmart loss prevention contacted the Rhinelander Police Department after they stopped a male and female who were shoplifting. The pair handed over the stolen goods before fleeing the store on a motorcycle. An undercover officer saw them in the parking lot and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The motorcycle fled and the suspects attempted to hide behind a dumpster a few stores down from Walmart. >> You didn't see the squad car? >> No, I did not. >> Or hear the siren? >> No, I did not. They took everything that wasn't paid for. I have every I have the receipt for the rest of it. We put what I paid for in the backpack cuz we were riding the motorcycle. >> Okay. >> But they got everything that wasn't paid for. >> Okay. How come you guys didn't wait? >> 52. >> I was just following him. I didn't know what the was going on. I've never been arrested. I've never been in trouble. >> Okay. Okay. >> He told me, "Let's go." And I didn't know what to do. So, I just walked. ing energy. >> Okay. >> Send you a sign. >> I've never been in trouble in my life. >> Okay. >> All right. >> Worst time to get out on the radio or what? >> I think it stops you there. If you step out just a little bit, it should be fine. Josh, you know, well, we still got to go through some stuff. So, if you want to take a minute to catch your breath, that's okay. But then we're going to walk over to a car. We're going to have to go back to the store and talk to them a little bit more. Okay. >> Sorry. I just really bad health conditions. >> That's okay. >> I have like the worst grip pain ever that a 20-year-old can have. >> Okay. All right. I'm going to grab this stuff. I'm just going to put it in the back of my car for now. It's heavy. >> Okay. What do you all have in here? >> Uh food. >> Okay. So, there's Bergen stuff that needs to be put somewhere cold. >> Okay. >> Uh, drags. I don't know what else, but >> Okay. I I'm just getting here, so I'm still going to have to talk to Captain Camela, but if what you're telling me is true that you haven't been in trouble before, >> okay, >> you shouldn't have to go to jail. But again, I I'm not making a promise, but just based on what I know, >> I was in trouble once, and that was because my ex, but it was expuned from my record because I was just turned 18. >> Okay. All right. Let's walk over here. >> Who left without paying for the check? Was that you or Michael >> or both of you? >> Just take some deep breaths. Okay. We just these are questions. We got to ask >> both. >> Both of you. >> Okay. >> Okay. >> How come you guys didn't pay for anything or pay for it? >> Because we're homeless and we're struggling and >> Okay. >> I'm just trying to get stuff for my dog. >> Okay. Where's your dog at? >> He's at the campsite we're staying at right now. >> Okay. Are you at an actual campsite or you guys just camping somewhere in the woods? >> An actual campsite for now. >> His mom paid for it. >> Okay. All right. Okay. Do you guys Did you have money to pay for the items that you took or No, >> I don't think I would have had enough. >> Okay. So, you had some money and you paid for some things, but then you stole the other things. >> Yes. >> Okay. All right. How did you guys take them? Did you hide them or what did you do? >> We took the wrappers off and put it in the backpack. >> Okay. Did you do you did that in the store? >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> All right. Okay. And you haven't done anything like this before? >> No. >> Okay. because I am I'm gonna check your bags and there's not going to be more stolen things in there. Okay. Is there anything illegal or anything I should know about? >> I don't think so. >> Okay. >> All right. There might be a knife or two, but I don't think there is any. >> Okay. Okay. I'm going to have you have a seat in the back of my car. Okay. Um and like I said, we're we're going to go back over to the store and we'll talk to their loss prevention and they'll go over some stuff with you. Okay. Why don't you come over here with me? Okay. I know we checked you. You just got your wallet. >> My phone. >> Your phone. Is that just like gloves and stuff? >> Yeah. >> Okay. Okay. I'm not going to put cuffs on you. I'm assuming you're going to be cooperative, right? Okay. Hop in the back seat. Okay. I think this is his. >> Okay. Did you look through it at all? >> No, I did not. Okay. >> Is that coat yours? That was on the back of the bike. Was that coat on the back of the bike? Was that yours? >> Uh, yes, sir. >> Okay. >> It's actually my stepdad's. But yeah, it's >> There's nothing in that either, though. >> What's that? >> There's nothing in that in though. In there, though. >> I don't think so. Okay. >> It was my stepdad, but I he let me use it, so >> Okay. Just cuz you had the bike little chili. Is that why? >> All right. Did Were you watching me? What? >> Did you see what I had I I had there? What was that? >> It looked like a go girl thing. Oh, it's for the wife. So she can >> Okay. >> So she can pee without having to go to the bathroom. >> I'm like, what am I getting myself into? >> Like being homeless. >> Okay. All right. Fair enough. I don't know if this stuff was stuff they just stole. These gloves, too. They look a little used. >> Those aren't stolen. Those are Well, they might be stolen, but they weren't just stolen. >> I don't know if those two things were both in. I'm not even sure what that is, but that was in his coat pocket. Looks like a max start. Ever start max. >> Okay. I was going to ask him like what's that that is what's that or >> do you know what this is? >> You guys like be honest in the video. Just keep your feet in. >> You can keep your feet in. >> Sorry. I was just trying to turn so I could >> That's okay. Uh, I have no idea. >> It's in your coat, man. >> We just want to make sure anything that wasn't paid for. But >> looks like a flashlight thing. >> I think that was the charger for the flashlight. >> Okay. >> Okay. >> Is that something that you guys took? So, that's got to go back. >> Yeah, probably. >> Okay. >> All right. Thanks, man. >> Yep. >> Um, going to take him. I double checked the open cases, but I know there's a felony bail jumping. Okay. >> Um, you can do a retail theft and then Josh said he's got enough if you want to cut a reckless driving ticket and then a um non-registration. >> Okay. >> Okay, >> cool. >> All right. Um, you can cut out of here. I'll take her back over to the store and >> I'll wait for the toe. >> Josh will wait for the toe. Look at that. >> Bang. Bang. Boom. >> All right. Can I take off my jack and just leave it in the car? >> If you want. Yeah, that's fine. Yep, that's okay. >> Help. >> Maybe if I leave off. >> All right. I'm just going to grab your backpack real quick. The other two bags, did the store kind of they did they go through them? Okay. Did they went through your backpack, too? >> Okay. Okay, let's go. >> Howdy. Can we come in? Yeah. See? >> Okay. The gentleman will not be joining us right now. He's going to go to the jail. >> Yes. Um, he said this is from a flashlight. >> Oh, probably. >> And then she didn't think that this was something they paid for either. >> Okay. Yeah, they had a bunch of stuff from Sporting Goods. Um, let me show you the picture. >> Okay. And she said, "Did you check her backpack?" So, he pull was pulling stuff out of the backpack. >> Okay, let's just take a peek with Where is the receipt that you would have had? Is that in your jacket pocket? >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> I have it pulled up. >> Oh, you do have it pulled up. Okay. So, what's going to happen? Um, I'm going to be issuing you an ordinance citation for shoplifting. Okay. You don't have any priors. Okay. You're not on a bond. You don't you're not on probation, nothing like that. Um, so typically what we do is we treat this first instance as kind of a really big mistake. Okay? So the store has consequences. You're not going to be allowed to go into any Walmarts. If you do, you will be cited or arrested for trespassing. Okay? Um, I'm going to issue you that ticket. All right? It's not going to be a criminal offense. It's an ordinance violation. So there's going to be a fine attached to it. Okay? and you will have to appear in court, but it's not it's not going to be something that is criminal. It's kind of your first time. This is you made a mistake. Okay? You obviously you know that taking those items was wrong, right? Okay. And you didn't have permission to take them. Okay? So, that's what it is. You're going to get an ordinance ticket. You'll have to go to court. Um and there will be a fine that you have to pay, but it's not going to be a criminal violation. If this happens again though, um, you are you would would be arrested and you would be charged with the misdemeanor retail theft. Do you understand that? Okay. Do you have any questions? All right. Because >> what am I supposed to do in the meantime? I have no way of getting back. >> Okay. Um, where is the campsite you're staying at? >> And why Marshfield? >> Oh boy. Um, I yeah, I I don't have a way of getting you back there. He's going to appear in court tomorrow at 1:15. Um, I'm assuming they'll let him out, but I don't I can't guarantee that. Um, but I don't I don't have a way to get you to the campground. I don't if there's anybody you can call. I don't know. I don't have any. >> Okay. >> I don't know. And it's it's unfortunate he left you in this situation cuz this didn't this didn't have to go this way, but there's not a whole lot that I can do about it right now. Um do you have money for a cab or do you anything like that? Do you have money for a hotel? >> Possibly. >> Possibly. >> I don't know any hotels or anything around here. >> Okay. Um, I mean, I can give you some recommendations. If any of them work, I I can give you a ride to one if you would like. Um, if I were you, I would try the Days In. Um, if I if you want to try calling them and see if there's a room available that you would be able that would work for you, I can give you a ride there. Who was he on the phone with? Was it somebody nearby? his mom, which is 2 hours away at the campsite. >> Yeah. Yeah. Sounds like she rented the campsite for him. But what were you guys doing up here? Just are you visiting or? >> Uh, I had to get meds and I had to get my last check. >> Okay. >> From work. >> Okay. Did you used to live here? >> Yeah. >> Okay. I'm assuming since Detective or uh Captain Camela He must have knew him. So, okay. No, go there. Um, the cheapest room is on like $100. >> Oh, boy. Um, the Clarion downtown. Do you you got everything? Okay. Why don't we we can go out to the squad and if you want to try calling um but I'll start working on writing your ticket. Um, just so that gets done. Okay. Okay. All right. If you want to grab your bag, we'll walk out and see what we can figure out. Okay. >> Thank you, Jessica. Have you ever tried going to the homeless shelter here in Rhinellander? >> I probably the Frederick house. >> Um, Mike tried to, but he has a record. >> Okay. Okay. >> I can drop you off there. I know they have like uh like an interview like process that you have to go through. Um but I can drop you off there and see if that's something that you want to try. I mean that wouldn't cost you any money, but unfortunately I mean if you've been here before, you know that we don't have a ton of resources available. So, but if you'd like, I I can bring you there and you can see. >> I mean, yeah, but they take like forever to do the background check and stuff and I don't know where to go. >> Okay. Well, they also I I they might have voucher. I don't know. I don't know. But I I don't really have any other options available. I can bring you to a hotel or I can bring you there and you can give it a shot. But it's up to you. Here. You want to throw your bag in here? We can have a seat and I'll get your ticket cut real quick. Okay. Uh, I can FaceTime you or whatever, but I got to hop off. I got to talk to her and then my phone's pretty much dead. Okay. So, I gave you the court date that you wanted 2 weeks from now. Okay. It's going to be at the courthouse here. All right. Um, it is a mandatory court appearance. You have to appear. that's the deposit amount they have, but talk to the court about, you know, what what fine. They're usually at least willing to negotiate with you a little bit. Um, and if you need a payment plan, something like that, they're willing to to work with you on that, too. If you don't show up, though, they're going to issue a warrant for your arrest. Okay. Um, yeah. So, and like I said, it's just an ordinance shoplifting. Um, but that's it's it's kind of like a speeding ticket in essence is what it is. It's not a crime. Okay. All right. I'll get your stuff for you and you can go ahead and grab your bags. >> Go ahead. >> Do you have anything for like to get dinner or something tonight? Not after I get the hotel. I got one for McDonald's right over there. >> Young Adam. >> Good luck. >> Traffic. >> Michael was found guilty for reckless driving, endangering safety, and felony bail jumping. He was sentenced to 3 years of probation and ordered to pay a $419 fine. Diana was found guilty for theft and ordered to pay a $246 fine.
