What starts as a simple noise complaint can turn into a chaotic arrest when a suspect refuses to cooperate with police. >> I didn't do anything. I didn't write a laws. I'm Sarah. Mother name. >> Can you come down here? >> Because I'm allowed to do that. >> No. >> You're down. >> NO. YOU'RE A BODY CAMERA. HE'S HURTING ME. I need help. >> Come on. Stand up. >> I can't. >> Yes, you can. Stay at me. >> And you can stand with legs. You don't have to stand on your hands. Go. >> On September [music] 29th, 2025, officers in Bradley, Illinois, responded to an apartment building after neighbors reported a woman screaming and violently banging on the walls. When 33-year-old Sarah Marthur opened the door, she insisted she had done nothing wrong before slamming it shut. She resisted being detained, allegedly swung at an officer, and turned a late night disturbance into [music] several criminal charges. This was only the beginning. Let's see what happened. >> I didn't do anything. I didn't break any laws. I'm Sarah Mor. My name >> No, you're harassing me. I'm leaving and you're not getting me on because I didn't do anything. I don't have to answer the door. I did not do anything and you need to leave cuz you're making the dog bark, not me. >> I'm not even knocking on the door. >> I don't have I'm sorry, but I didn't break any law. I don't have to answer the door. You [ __ ] off. >> I'M GOING TO SLEEP and you're bothering me. >> Shut the less and I'm leaving and you can't get me out. I didn't do anything. >> No, we're not. So this is this was but sound like loud. >> Yeah. Yeah. Normally >> not a problem. >> I'm not sure if anybody else is up there besides her. >> I bang on the wall to make her stop. She wants to bang back. >> She wants to be crazy >> or harassing her. That's what she's going. >> So are you in the unit next to hers? I'm guessing >> I'm way in at the top. >> 116. >> I'm 114. Her if you go through the hallway. Her apartment is like it's a studio apartment. So, it's just one big old room >> and it's connected with my with my room, you know, where I can hear her. So, she's yelling. This is more This happened more than once. I'm just calling now because >> Mhm. >> I I don't want to hear it. >> I have to work in the morning unlike her. She works at White Castle, so she's up all hours of the night. >> Okay. >> I I have a study, you know, and I can them walls are thin, so I don't want to have it to be a problem, but she needs to know, you know, you need to have common courtesy for other people. So, are you right up these stairs? >> You can go up these stairs. >> Is there There's another set of stairs. >> Yeah, I believe. Let me see. I've never been up through here before. >> Yeah. You hear her? >> Yeah, >> that's her. >> Is that you right there? >> No. No. I'm not. That's not me. I'm way in the back. So, that's her unit right there. >> Go ahead. >> We did my right. I was >> Can you Can you step down because I'm allowed TO DO THAT? >> NO. A noise complaint didn't automatically mean that someone had committed a crime. Officers still need a lawful reason to enter a home or take further action, but repeated disturbances could lead to more investigation or charges depending on the law and the situation. I didn't break any laws had clearly become her favorite sentence. She kept repeating it so much it almost sounded like she was trying to convince herself. >> Okay, ma'am, can you come down here? >> Yeah, ma'am. Because I'm allowed to do that. >> No. >> You're No. >> Down. Get out. >> No. NO. >> OKAY. >> LET GO OF ME. >> YOU'RE AT BODY CAMERA. [screaming] HE'S HURTING, BABY. >> MA'AM, how about you step outside and [screaming] talk to us? >> Really? >> Come out and talk to us. What you need? >> Let go. You want to talk? Are you going to talk? >> What are YOU DOING? >> NO, THIS is not to me. I didn't do it. >> I didn't DO ANYTHING. I DIDN'T DO ANYTHING. [screaming] >> This is a fault. >> NO. I GOT A PLAN. >> I didn't do it. >> Why? You got to let ME GET MY STUFF. >> NO, WE DON'T. >> YES, YOU DO. >> WE'RE GOING TO BED. >> For what? >> Battery to a police officer. How's that? >> Can I PLEASE GET MY PHONE? >> NO. PLEASE. We're past that. Officer, >> no. What about my keys? >> You can't do that to me. >> Yeah, we can. >> I need help. >> COME ON. STAND UP. I CAN. >> YES, you can. >> Stand me hand. >> And you can stand with legs. You don't have to stand on your hands. Go. Come on. >> My leg. CAN I PLEASE GET MY PHONE? >> I'M GOING TO TRY TO GET down the stairs if you DON'T STAND UP. STAND UP. PLEASE GET MY PHONE. >> STAND UP AND I'LL GO GET YOUR PHONE. >> I can't go in there if you don't GET OUT OF THE WAY. STAND UP. >> PLEASE. >> STAND UP. LAST ORDER. PLEASE stop yelling at me. My keys ARE IN MY PHONE. I I'm going to do anything. WELL, >> my friend, my brilliant brutality. >> It's not [screaming] really I [screaming] >> get up. MY DAD. My >> her poor neighbors had to listen to all of that and honestly they deserved a break. Her voice alone should be a felony and every extra struggle was only making the situation worse for her. And well, that was a serious upgrade for him. Please keep it down. The situation had clearly gone way beyond a simple noise complaint. This is brilli brutality. IT'S >> REALLY NOT. >> YES, IT IS. >> NO, >> YOU'RE DRAGGING ME. >> YOU'RE SITTING UP. >> Can you tell me what law I broke? Because I did it. >> Battery to A POLICE OFFICER. >> NO, HE DRUGGED me down the stairs. Please don't take me. I did. They drugged me down the stairs and hurt me. I did not hurt no police officer. >> Really? You didn't HIT MY PARTNERS? >> NO. >> YOU SURE ABOUT THAT? I can prove it. >> No, you can't. >> Yes, I I didn't do that. I WOULD never hurt the police officer. >> That is >> You also didn't follow a lawful order. So, >> I I ANSWERED >> I ANSWERED THE DOOR. >> I can't. >> I didn't hurt a cop. I would never hurt a cop. I respect your job. NO, CUZ YOU GRABBED ME. YOU GRABBED ME AND DRUGGED ME DOWN THE STAIRS. >> YOU DRUGG ME DOWN THE STAIRS. >> You resisted. >> NO, I DIDN'T. I OPENED the door. >> No, you didn't. >> Yes, I did. >> You tried to close it in our faces again. >> Yeah, but I didn't assault an officer. I didn't >> I didn't assault officer. >> You'll have your day in court, ma'am. >> No, there is no day in court. I'm not going to jail. >> Yeah, you are. It's not a negotiation process. >> I DIDN'T DO ANYTHING. [screaming] I DID NOT RESIST NOTHING. I OPENED THE DOOR. Stop screaming. >> We can all hear you. >> We can all hear you perfectly fine. >> I opened the B door both times. >> Slammed it both times. >> I opened it clearly enough for you. >> Would you stop talking over him? He is talking to you. >> Don't cooperate. We detain you into cuffs. >> Please. No. Please. I will do anything. >> You tried swinging at me. >> No, I didn't. You tried grabbing me. Please, I'm sorry. >> Yes, because we HAVE TO KEEP >> I DON'T HAVE A RECORD ON MY NAME. I DON'T I'm noting this building, >> dude. Please take these off. They're hurting me. >> Well, you wouldn't be in cuffed if you would have just cooperated from the beginning. >> I did. I opened the door to door twice. >> Ma'am, this wasn't really a decision you were making anymore. And somewhere out there, there was probably someone thinking, I can fix her. If officers had lawful grounds to make an arrest, arguing about it wasn't going to stop the arrest. The better place to challenge the allegations was through the legal process, not by physically resisting. And under statutory criminal codes, slamming doors on investigating officers or swing in during a detention escalates a minor noise complaint into felony assault. You know, under Illinois statutory law and fourth amendment investigation standards, when officers respond to verifiable noise complaints and observe an ongoing disturbance at a doorway, they possess lawful authority to investigate and detain the occupant. Courts have repeatedly established that private property thresholds do not grant immunity when an individual actively obstructs an investigation. Physically fighting back, refusing lawful commands, or swinging at responding officers instantly elevates a simple municipal noise infraction into felony aggravated battery against a police officer, obstruction, and resisting arrest. >> And then you guys grab me a very aggressively >> and there's camera. >> I grabbed you because you were slamming the door. I didn't hurt nobody, my partner. You hurt. I didn't swing and nobody. He tried to come. He tried He tried to get me through the door. >> Yeah, cuz I asked you very nicely to come out so we can figure out what's going on. >> Okay, but you don't have to come me for it. I'm not a criminal. >> Well, your actions speak different. >> You've not done one thing. >> You You drunk You literally cut my wrist driving me down the stairs. My wrists are cut right now and they hurt. You aggressively cuffed me and it I'm cussing my wrist. >> Well, you shouldn't have thought. >> I DIDN'T. YOU GUYS pulling me out of my own apartment. >> Hi, guys. This is Sarah. >> Okay, but this it hurts. That's why. >> Can you talk to our paramedics, please? >> Cutting and bruising me in ways that I don't want. >> Can you talk to the paramedics, please? >> What's happening? >> Yeah, sure. >> My brains are bruising. Cut. >> Okay. Other than that, >> what's going on? >> I don't want to go to jail. I didn't do anything. >> She'll sign a complaint for DC. >> And they dragged me out of this unit. >> Okay. >> Why Why were you yelling? And >> I wasn't terrorizing anybody. I was on the phone with somebody and they misconstrued it. >> Okay. >> I am not a problem. I like run my record. Like I don't This hurts so bad. >> Can you answer these questions three? >> Yes. >> Okay. >> It was definitely time for her to grow up. But if she kept acting this way, that wasn't happening anytime soon. Arguing with the officers while already detained wasn't going to magically rewind the last few minutes. I didn't do anything. Girl, we'd heard [music] that sentence about 17,000 times by now. And remember, the whole thing started with a noise complaint. >> Where are you at right now? >> I'm at my house Broadway. More specifically, 108 is my unit. Not everybody in here has a unit, but I do because I'm not Bri and I'm not Matt, but I'm Sarah Mason. >> Y >> I know that. Like, >> what day of the week is it? >> It's It's Tuesday. >> Close. Okay. [crying] >> It's like in the middle of the night. So that's how I know it's Tuesday cuz that's still close enough because I know >> they think of her and the way they grab me and I was apprehensive because the way they grab me >> I'm right here. You don't have to scream. Okay. >> Do you want to go to the hospital? >> No, I don't have money for the hospital. I didn't break any laws. I didn't break any bones. >> 114. You got to go. >> It's around my back. Yeah. >> I got hurt. We're okay, Katie. >> Huh? >> We're okay. >> Whatever you >> We don't need to go. >> Okay. >> You don't need to see the paramedics for anything, right? >> I don't have a scrape or a broken bone or nothing. I don't have anything alien wrong with me. >> I didn't do that. >> So, there wasn't enough to take. >> I Please tell me what I'm being arrested for. Please quit being so rubbed. Please. >> I didn't do it. [ __ ] a police officer. >> HE GRABBED ME. [screaming] >> YOU MIGHT BE getting social. >> Why? >> I don't have anything in my pocket that's going to hurt you. I don't even have my phone. I can't even go because I don't know. Can I please get my >> No, we got we got >> I didn't get the spell hurt. I did not hurt a police officer. They had grabbed. You grabbed me. Please. There's something I could do. You're being too rough with me. >> All right. Ready? >> I have two. >> Please. I don't even have a desk. >> I don't even have my phone. Please. Please. I don't know anybody's number WITHOUT IT. I DIDN'T do anything. Ma'am, the officers weren't asking you to solve a mystery. They were trying to process an arrest. But I did appreciate the officers checking on her condition. You know, whatever had happened before that point. Once someone was in custody and complain about pain, making sure they were okay was important. >> I DIDN'T DO ANYTHING. PLEASE. I did not grab you guys. >> Then why are you still yelling and screaming? >> Please. Please. Please. [laughter] Please, I didn't do anything. >> Yeah, thanks for my security complex secured for all you guys. I didn't hurt police officer. You guys hurt me. I have the marks for it. Do you guys have any marks? Please watch. >> Please. >> I didn't hurt nobody. >> I didn't hurt anybody. They hurt me. >> I don't know. I didn't take it apart yet. >> They hurt me. They Do you have bruises on your body? Cuz I do. >> It's like a business card holder. >> Police brutality. I I will be making a formal Sarah F. >> And what is all your names? Cuz I we will be making a formal. >> Sure. My last name is Novak 667. I'll be on the report. >> Police officer. I would never. >> Okay. And you wouldn't yell and scream like a child? >> No. God, my debit card and everything. And I can't even go to jail without it. You don't want me to HAVE IT. >> I DON'T HAVE ANYBODY ELSE TO GO WITHOUT MY PHONE. >> Please don't make me leave without it. Please. >> Please. >> Please. My debit card. Please get my phone. Please. >> Your debit card's in YOUR WALLET. >> IT'S IN MY PHONE. >> NO, IT'S NOT. IT'S IN YOUR WALLET. >> NO, you don't have to. >> Okay. Yeah, she >> if we have to leave DC out, if I can't get a hold of her, I can call back and add it. >> Your audio and video recorded anytime you're in the car. >> Please give me a >> Have we calmed down at all? >> Yeah, we gave her some medicine. >> Okay, cool. >> You're actually laughing now. >> Oh, nice. With you guys. With me, it might be a different story. >> I'm sorry. Once the cuffs go back on, which will have to go in the front. >> Yeah, we're just putting the sling just for comfort. >> Okay. >> If someone claimed they were injured during an arrest, getting a medical evaluation could help document the extent of those injuries. Body camera footage, police reports, and medical records could also become important if the person later filed formal complaint or legal claim. >> She's just worried about her apartment being unlocked. >> We already locked it. >> Okay. Well, why don't you just let >> Maybe maybe that'll be my ticket. >> There you go. Cuz she just told me, she goes, "I'm just worried about my plate. I'm going to lose everything." >> And like I said, and it just says that, you know, it didn't show anything. Okay. And then it shows the medicine that we gave her if the nurse wants to order whatever. >> Perfect. Okay. >> Thank you. >> All right, >> Sarah. >> You're being discharged. Sarah, >> they locked up your place for you every >> I can't get in without my keys. >> We can figure that out for you when you get home. [screaming] >> All right. >> No, it cost me $50 without my keys. >> You guys should lock it. >> Okay, >> I am going to have to kick the door down. I can't get in without I have nowhere to go without my apartment. >> Sarah. Sarah. He just said they're going to help you figure that out. Okay. >> That's something we do all the time for the community. >> Don't have your stuff get taken. You were worried about that. >> I thought that you guys really >> No, >> I guess that does adhere to >> Oh, we have a duty to protect the property of the community. >> Okay. >> I thought you didn't care at all. >> You thought I What? >> Not you personally. I thought as >> I thought you like arrested people and like oh there >> no we lock it up. We don't want anything to happen to your stuff. >> Back in. All right. >> So, it's all good. >> And I'm going to be nice and I'm going to cuff you in the front so you can keep your sling on. Okay. >> You going to be good with me? We're better now. >> All right. >> Okay. >> No problem. >> All right. >> Well, Sarah's priorities had officially changed. Now, the biggest crisis was apparently getting back into her apartment. And honestly, this was probably the calmst we'd seen her all night. Wow. Sarah finally promised that she would behave. Character development. Well, we'll see how long that lasted. >> Thank you. I'm sorry I was a dick, but I promise. >> I know you you're doing your job and I wasn't trying to be make it hard on you. >> I'm going to stuff is available is in there. >> All right. You're going to turn around, place my cards. Nothing in your pockets. You're good. Put your hands out. Nothing in your pockets. Okay. All right. I have a seat. I'll get your seat belted in. There's a handle right in front of you. Probably easier. >> Yeah, probably. >> This one's way easier. >> All right. >> Next time. >> That's a big shift. Thank you. Once someone was being transported after an arrest, officers typically carried out safety [music] checks, including looking for prohibited items and making sure the person was secured with a seat belt, and cooperating at that stage could help prevent additional conflict, and you know, keep everyone safe. Sarah Mur was arrested and charged with aggravated battery against a police officer, disorderly conduct, obstructing an officer, and resisting arrest. She was taken to the hospital for evaluation after complaining of a shoulder injury and then released to the custody of the county jail. The available records do not show a plea, conviction, sentence, or final court outcome. Now, a noise complaint by itself does not automatically mean someone's committed a crime. Officers generally need a lawful reason before making an arrest or taking further action. However, if someone physically resists an arrest or allegedly assaults an officer, additional charges can follow depending on the local law and evidence. When someone feels threatened, angry, or overwhelmed, the body's fight orflight response can make it harder to think clearly and control impulses. Now, that doesn't excuse aggressive behavior, but it can help explain why an emotional situation can quickly become much more serious. Well, what do you think about Sarah's behavior? Do you think she could have avoided the additional charges by simply staying calm and cooperating with the officers? Well, share your answer in the comment section below.
