Today on Alpha Responder Network, >> King98, can you start medics towards my way? We have a driver of a small SUV truck. >> You all right, sir? >> Join us as we ride along with the nation's bravest alpha responders. This is Alpha Responder Network. What a good dog. What a good dog. Oh my goodness. so strong. >> I'm Deputy Gonzalez. I am currently a K9 officer or K9 deputy. Been with Mojave County Sheriff's for about 2 years. I just love the area. Love the people here and I love the scenery. >> How you guys doing? >> Oh my goodness. What do we got here? >> Community policing, it's huge in law enforcement and sometimes it's overlooked. In this situation, I saw two little kiddos and they were excited to see me. >> You guys wait right there. Maybe it's just been a hard day and you just some little kid came out and waved at you and maybe he watches one of those cartoons with the dogs that are cops. You might have just made the highlight of his day. >> Howdy. Got some gifts for you guys. Because I am a canine deputy, I have a bunch of what is it? Flare you want to call it. So I have coins, I have baseball cards with my dog on it. We have stuffed animals that are actually our dog. Here you guys go. >> That's my dog. That's Ace right there. Look at him. >> Yeah. >> You guys on vacation? >> Yeah. >> Really? Where are you guys from? >> California. >> California. That's where I'm from. I moved out here a while ago. You guys enjoying the sun? >> Yeah. >> Yeah. You guys going off-roading? >> Uh tonight? Yeah. >> Tonight. That's amazing. How old are you guys? >> I'm nine. >> Nine. >> I'm five. >> No way. I get an opportunity to make a child's day, but on top of that, I get to make I have an opportunity to to embed myself with the community and let them know like, hey, not only am I out here to bring presence, but I'm also out here to bring presence of law enforcement. I am trying to leave a lasting impression that cops are are here to help and we're the good guys. I got one that's a little bit more suiting. Little teddy bear. Eight. What? >> Oh, you have a can on you there. You have an eight. >> I do. That's my dog right there. >> Oh my gosh, that ace, you guys. How cool is that? >> One for the toddler right there. >> Thank you. >> Thank you. >> Thank you for keeping us safe. >> Of course. >> No worries. That's what we're out here for. >> We're just trying to bring awareness and let you guys know that we're going to be out here so much. We appreciate. >> Of course. No worries. >> He's blind and deaf. So, it's okay. You're safe. >> He's just like me. Well, we're going to get out of your guys' hair. We just want to stop in real fast. >> Thank you so much. Have a great day. >> Happy 4th of July. >> You too. No worries. [Music] >> Good boy. What a good boy. What a good boy. >> Who doesn't want to be a K9 officer? >> K9 Ace is a three-year-old Belgian Tiver from Germany. We recently acquired him and went through a training program in New Mexico called K9 services where I was taught exactly uh how to train him on narcotic detection on top of that obedience work, how to build the dog up from square one. It takes a great deal of detail oriented work. So, a person that is dedicated to a craft and hone that discipline because you need to really focus on the small nuances of canines. So, what we're going to do is we're going to set up a training scenario with the dog and I'm going to show you on a long line that the dog is going to be able to pick up the scent of narcotics from a distance of a field football field length. Although a dog can smell the presence of narcotics, you have to aid him in the assistance of being able to pick up that scent. So, what we'll do is we'll store a training aid in an area for him to look and he will be able to pick up the scent. So, he's already searching. He knows something's up. There's a game to play. These dogs are specially hand selected from Germany, France, different different places in Europe that master in dog training. I remember getting my dog for the first time. I I had never met my dog. Went to a school called K9 Services in Albuquerque, New Mexico. It was a 7-week course, 42 days from the minute that we woke up. So, it was not just based on the dog, but it's also based on you learning the dog. The dog needs to learn from you as well, and you guys need to learn together. Good boy. From a football field length. Good boy. My dog was actually trained on ring sport and schson. So when I got him, he was extremely obedient. >> Dan Stills oust f ace here. Plots >> and you just feel like a little kid on on Christmas and you have like this little remote control car and there's a special button on it and you press it. >> His eyes are on me at all times focusing on me and no matter where I move, he is not to move at all. lots given the command. This is important when we deploy the dog. If we need him to stay back from any kind of threat, any kind of injury, we need to count that he knows that what he's supposed to be doing at all times. Ace here. They respond to nuances of your voice, inflections, things like that. So they really don't understand words. More so they understand sounds and the pitch and the tone in which you use that sound at the time. >> Oh boy. What a boy. What a good boy. A more aggressive tone is obviously going to call for more attention, a snap, snappier responses, things like that. So, you want to save those things for obviously for high-risk um situations where if you really want to get get your dog to call off, I mean, you better come with some some deep inflection, some some aggressive inflection. I have I still have some bites that are present on my arm that I think are going to be with me for life. Um, so if you guys have a question if I've ever been bit, yes, I have been bit by my own dog. This is what he's trained to do. and if she should be so excited about the work that he's doing and frustrated. It's on me to understand that on my dog. It's on me to understand as a handler that this is it's just like heavy machinery. You don't touch certain things. You don't moving parts. You know, this is a living breathing creature. They have their moods and you have to make sure that you are attentive to their needs at all times. >> He loves he loves cocaine and finding it doesn't use it. >> And yeah, we got certified 15 minutes after we got certified. We got asked to come out and do a sniff, a free air sniff, and we found uh a positive hit instantly. It was like, it was like having a kid hit a home run, you know? He's just so proud. It's a proud moment. 15 going on 16 years of law enforcement. It's rejuvenated me. Every time I I see him, he knows that it's time to work. That's all I can ask from him, and I love it. >> Yes. So, he doesn't get his toy until he looks at me. Focus should always be on me. And that's how I That's how we do it right there. Hey guys, Kent here with Alpha Responder Network. I'll be 85 to that >> King 98 arrived on boundary cone. It's going to be within the intersection. And if you can let DPS know, >> right? When you get on a crash scene, you have a crazy dynamic, but you don't want to make a situation worse. >> How you guys doing? >> What's up, man? I'm a fireman and bullhead. >> Okay. >> You all right, sir? >> So, immediately I ended up blocking off the southbound lanes. So, I wanted to make sure that the the vehicles were not going to be able to strike us. We also had to protect the scene. >> Just hang tight. >> Looks like a skin tear. >> Hang tight. >> Any head, neck, or back pain? King 98, >> can you start medics towards my way? We have a driver of a small SUV truck. Uh has a laceration to his left arm, not arterial bleeding at this time. He's conscious and breathing. >> I relate to the dispatch standard said, "Hey, we have airbag deployments on one vehicle. Um it looks like there's a a male sitting inside the vehicle that took the most damage and he had a a laceration to his left arm. Luckily, we had an offduty uh firefighter that was literally on the scene, saw the whole thing go down, and he said, "Hey, I'm with this fire department. I'm off duty. I got this guy right now if you want to start all all the stuff." How you guys doing? You guys okay? >> Okay. >> Okay. Medics are on the way right now. >> Yeah. He just mailed us right here. >> Okay. Which way was he coming from? >> Which way was he coming from? >> We were turning and honestly, I was on the phone. He was driving and I didn't see where he came from, but he hit us hard. >> He knows he took the red light. >> Which vehicle were you in? >> In the Dodge. >> In the Dodge. Can I get your driver's license, registration, insurance? >> Yeah, I'm going to go grab him for >> Okay. And then your guys' driver's license, registration insurance as well. >> You the only one in the vehicle, right? >> All right, bud. Just hang tight. Actually, going to be here in just a sec. Okay. >> Which way you guys >> We were We were at the light. Soon as it turned green, we came and he just out of nowhere. That's why I think he was coming straight down. >> Okay. So, so he was So, you guys were coming >> Yeah, we were turning right here. We were at the red light. Soon as it turned green, we all came. >> You guys were making a left hand turn. >> Yeah. Yeah. We were already past the turn and he hit the back of the trailer right there on the side like I believe by the by the fit. >> Okay. >> Cuz that's where it looks like. It looks like he [ __ ] up the tire only. But >> so which you guys didn't see which direction he was coming from? >> Honestly, I didn't. It was We were at the red light and we were, you know, we weren't expecting. >> There was a bunch of cars over here. I think he was coming this way. He was coming fast. Yes. >> Okay. And then do you have your ID on you by any chance? >> Uh, yeah, I should. >> Thank you so much. How's he doing? Good. He said he was going south. He's going to be a transport, it looks like. Said he wants to go. >> Okay, that's that's no worries. >> Yeah. >> Anybody else inside the vehicle with you, sir? No, just you. >> Yes. >> Okay. Where were you coming from? >> That shopping back. >> Where were you doing shopping at? >> Uh Walmart. >> Walmart. So, you were coming back this way. >> You were going that way? >> I think >> You think it's This 95 going that way. >> What's that, sir? >> Is that 95 going that way or >> No, 95 is going this way, sir. >> Was going that way. >> So, you were coming from Walmart going south. >> Yeah. >> Okay. And you guys were going >> Yeah, we were turning. >> You were making a left-hand turn. >> Yeah. That was a while after that light turned red, too. >> Right in that 145. That red. >> Okay, perfect. >> 1445. where that collision had occurred was in the jurisdiction of the highway patrol and so I already knew that they were going to be the ones that were going to investigate this. I didn't want to step on their toes. 98. That's affirmative. Thank you. We have a conscious male right now inside that red truck. He has a laceration to his left arm, but medics are on their way. After everybody was safe, got all the vehicle information. I got all the insurance information. I got all the drivers information, all the passengers information. And then from there we have we have to start working our way out. It's unknown right now who you know uh committed the the fault. Uh since we don't have any witnesses to say or in cameras in the area, it's going to be determined by the uh crash investigator, the crash scene investigator that's going to be dispatched to us right now. >> So where a crime scene investigator would come in and photograph everything, document everything. Same thing goes with a collision like this. On top of that, we have to do traffic control. So, we have to make sure that nobody else is going to get injured. So, oftentimes people sit in traffic like, "What's going on? What is taking so long?" It's like, well, if it was your family and something did happen, you would want the best care possible. And that's what we're doing. We're making sure that all the logistics are covered. And it's easier to hold the scene than it is to recreate it. Uh, so I'm just taking some establishing shots of the scene just in case something should get moved at a later time they try to recreate it uh for their for their investigation. So >> yeah, so you have to be a collision specialist at the time. You have to be a traffic control specialist at the time. You have to be an onseen medic. There's a huge dynamic and it's a lot of moving parts. So instead of doing this and just focusing on one person, you have to be like this. So, it appears that this vehicle was coming southbound from the statement that he gave me. He was coming back from Walmart. They were making a left-hand turn from from 95. This fellow was actually coming across the highway and then struck the trailer on his front passenger side onto the fender on this side. It turned out for the best that situation. No one was severely injured. Some small lacerations, airbag deployments, and I think the guy man ended up picking it out. All right. [Music]
