Officer James detected the odor of marijuana and alcohol coming from the vehicle and asked Udell to step out. The suspect, Melanie Udell, refused. Instead, she started the car, backed up, and then accelerated directly at Officer James. He narrowly avoided being struck by pushing away from the vehicle. Moments later, Udell backed up again and accelerated aggressively, deliberately steering toward officers. She struck Officer James, launching him over a snowbank and slamming him into a fence with such force that his firearm flew from his hand. As this happened, Officer Anderson responded by firing at Udell, stopping the threat. Her vehicle came to rest on the snowbank, just feet from where Officer James lay injured. Officer James sustained injuries to his head, hands, and leg, and was transported to the hospital. He was released later that day, but will require knee surgery and is expected to be out for at least a year. Udell was pronounced dead at a local hospital. Following the incident, both officers were placed on administrative leave. The Bureau of Criminal Investigation ruled that the use of deadly force was justified.
