On December 18th, 2024 at 1:12 a.m. Urbana police conducted a traffic stop at Scioto Street and South Jefferson Avenue in Urbana, Ohio for suspected DUI. Behind the wheel was Champaign County Sheriff Matthew Melvin. Officers noted an odor of alcohol and what appeared to be vomit on the driver's side door. Sheriff Melvin refused to perform a field sobriety test, raising serious concerns about his fitness to drive. In this body cam footage, you'll see the full encounter and witness the troubling behavior of someone sworn to uphold the law. Share your thoughts in the comments below on this shocking incident. The audio on the officers' body cams has not yet been activated. Officers are generally required to activate both audio and video on their body-worn cameras at the start of any interaction with the public where law enforcement action is likely. This includes situations such as traffic stops, arrests or detentions, investigative questioning, searches of individuals, vehicles, or properties, and responses to dispatch calls for service. The rules and requirements for activating body cams, including audio, can vary significantly depending on the situation, the jurisdiction, and the specific policies of the law enforcement agency. As the traffic light turns green, the truck remains stopped for an unusually long time before the driver notices and begins to move. A strong indication of possible impairment. The police officers activate their overhead lights to initiate a traffic stop and switch on their body cam audio before approaching the truck to make contact with the driver. Boy Paul 3411 KBP 3411. Sheriff Matt Melvin and his attorney declined to comment to the press during his initial hearing in Urbana courts. Melvin's next court appearance is scheduled for January 31st, 2025. He will be replaced as sheriff by Chad Burroughs, who ran against him in March 2024. Burroughs, a 25-year veteran of the Champaign County Sheriff's Office, having served as a deputy and sergeant, will assume the role in January. It is hoped that Burroughs will provide stronger leadership and better representation for the Champaign County Sheriff's Department and its citizens than Melvin. We'd love to hear your thoughts on the actions of the sheriff, so please share your opinions in the comments below. Don't forget to subscribe, like, and share our videos.
