On March 12th, 2023, at approximately 1:38 a.m. on the 1200 block of Southwest Grand Boulevard in Oklahoma City, an officer spots a city-owned SUV swerving and speeding. When the vehicle pulls into a private driveway, the officer approaches the driver, only to find Captain James Matt French of the OKC Police Investigations Bureau behind the wheel. Instead of answering whether he's been drinking, French immediately tries to pull rank, stating his position and repeatedly asking the officer to turn off his body cam, clearly hoping to dodge a DUI. I'd like to talk Despite visibly struggling through the field sobriety test, Captain James Matt French continued to plead with the officer to turn off his body camera, an effort that ultimately failed. Instead of receiving special treatment, he was taken into custody and booked into the Oklahoma County Detention Center. He has since bonded out. Following the arrest, French was placed on administrative leave with pay while both a criminal and internal investigation move forward. Per department policy, if criminal charges are officially filed, a predetermination hearing will be held to decide if he should be placed on unpaid leave. The arresting officer followed protocol and handled the situation professionally, refusing to be swayed by French's repeated attempts to use his rank to avoid consequences. While the police chief refrained from speculating on why French was so insistent on turning the camera off, he confirmed that officers are allowed to deactivate their body cams after an incident is fully documented. As of now, there have been no updates on this case. No public records confirm the specific charges filed or any legal consequences French may have faced. Whether he will be held accountable remains to be seen. Let us know your thoughts in the comments and don't forget to like and subscribe for more real, unfiltered police encounters.
