Hello. >> Hello. >> No. Had them off. >> Hi. How are you? >> Good. And you? >> What's going on? Talk to my dog. >> Um, I got hit in the face. >> Where at? >> Um, in the right eye >> and then um >> and well, it's probably it just happened about 30 minutes ago. >> By who? >> My husband was sitting on the front steps, which is about the first time he's hit me. So, I called my parents, that's my mother, to get picked up to be brought somewhere safe. >> Okay. So, how did all this start? >> I was at home today um alone. I did not do anything. Um >> and I got I get hit a lot. So, >> you what? I'm sorry. >> I get hit a lot. >> Okay. But what happened today? What triggered him? Obviously, there had to be some kind of an argument. Um he was mad at me just because um I'm an alcoholic but I'm fine today. Well, I'm not fine. I don't feel great. But I didn't do anything today. I took a shower. I stayed home. I was resting. >> You say you're recovering. Is that what you just said? >> Yes. >> Okay. >> Yes. >> So, what again? What stemmed an argument between you two? If you're recovering, you're not doing anything wrong. That's not usually a start of an argument. No, it's not. No, it's not. No, it's definitely not start of an argument. Um, >> I don't actually really know what starts half the art. >> Man, hearing her say she's been hit a lot, and this is the first time she's calling for help like this, it hits hard. She's trying to get safe, but you can already feel the layers here. Addiction, arguments that escalate out of nowhere. A home that's supposed to be secure, but isn't. It's heartbreaking how normalized this has become for her. >> Is anybody injured here? Um, >> I'm trying to figure out why my par the paramedics are staging here. >> So, obviously they're here to check something. >> I don't other than getting hit as hard as I could in the right eye. Um, I don't think so. >> Okay. I don't know why they got any of the medic. >> Officer, your partner just took a photo of her face. Might want to get >> the what? >> A photo. >> Okay. Well, I don't know what he's doing. I'm talking to you. >> No. Can you take a photo of her face? >> If he wants to take photos of her face, he can do it. It's his fault. He's got >> Oh, I'm sorry. I'm sorry. >> I'm just talking to her to keeping you guys entertained while he figures out what happened here. >> Well, there's two sides of the story. She's reported >> usually is there. She's reported domestic abuse. >> Okay. >> And we're her parents. >> Um, and so we are close by. And I just Thanks, guys. And and >> I just wanted to get picked up. I didn't want police called. I wasn't even planning on calling police on him. I just wanted to get to a safe space. >> So, my wife's a recovering alcoholic >> and she's relapsed 2 weeks ago. Don't listen to anything my mother-in-law has to say here. >> Yeah, she wasn't here. So, tell her away. >> Can you uh go wait somewhere where we're not standing right next to him? >> Yes, I can. I Nice that you have a partner. Thank you. >> I'm sorry. >> I see that you have a partner. I didn't realize I'm I'm a little upset. >> I understand. Thank you. So, there's been an issue for the last two weeks. My wife made it 145 days sober and relapsed >> last week. She had a seizure >> uh with there's an Elmharst memorial like not the memorial but like you know she's like all these bruises are from all of uh the IVs that tried to do during the season Caesar. She was strapped down into a bed. Anyways, fast forward to today. >> I'm at baseball for like 6 hours today. Come home, find a bottle of wine on the counter. She's yelling and screaming. I I tried grabbing the rest of her plastic cup and she jammed it into my face. I don't know if I'm bleeding, but it feels like I have a mark somewhere up here. >> Yeah, you got a little blood up on your upper lip. >> So, I said, "Fuck this. I'm calling the cops." >> Fair enough. >> She's on court supervision. She's not supposed to be drinking. >> She's in violation of her court supervision. >> Okay. >> And >> she's claiming that I've been hitting her, but there's nothing Um, >> she had six public safety guys holding her down. >> Just last Wednesday, th Wednesday or Thursday, she was strapped to a bed. >> Uh, what kind of cup did she shove in your face? >> Plastic orange count. There's a plast plastic orange cup. >> Can I see it? Do >> you mind if I come in with you? >> Yeah, for sure. Stay downstairs, but I'll be I'll be done in a minute. So, in the garbage can, get home. I'm at baseball with my son. He's downstairs. He's playing video games and watching movies. >> Uh, grab this thing. No, she has this and she jabs me in the face. >> Yeah. And obviously there's this whole mess. I said That's it. I've been trying to avoid having to call the cops because she's on court supervision. I know. >> We agreed to get separated, but she's like her parents are so on a power trip because she's like freaking out about losing this house. And I was like, listen, I'll just we're going to dissolve the house. We're going to move on. I'm at baseball all day long. Come home. She's drinking again. And she was So then she pulled this actually. It was sitting here full of wine and when I tried grabbing it uh and I was like standing here and we were like and she went so wine splash all over you too. >> Yes. >> Okay. And kind of this way. >> All right. Okay. Um you know what she's going to tell me? >> Uh during this when I was trying to grab it, I mean she was here. I tried driving and she jabbed me and I went like this across your face. >> There was no open hitting or anything like that. >> So she So she tried to hit you with like a while you had >> this had the cup. She had the cup. >> Mhm. >> And I tried grabbing it and then she just said, "Fuck it." And she spilled it all over me, which is kind of dried, but if you were to smell me, I smell like wine. And this way, hit me in the lip and I was like, "Get away." So, I guess my question is, were you guys fighting over the cup or did she intentionally shove the cup in your face? >> Intentionally shoved it in my face. Gotcha. >> Well, actually, I tried. All right. So, I don't know how the terminology. I tried to grab it >> and once she was like realizing that she couldn't drink it, >> she just said, "Fuck you." And like tried to spill it on me, but I'm right here. And it hit my face. >> And so, do you think that she tried to hit you with a cup or do you think she was trying to splash the alcohol or just give up and dump the cup? I think I think she tried to dump it into my face as hard as possible. >> All right. Intentionally possibly hitting me in the face. >> Who knows? >> Okay. >> Um, but >> was it Lisa? >> Yes. >> Okay. Is that right? Yes. >> All right. So, this is my area. I'm a reporting officer, so I know like probably already told him what happened. I need you to tell me again. Okay. >> Yeah. Um, I was at home alone today and then my husband came home and got upset. I do not know why, even though I know that sounds unusual, and I got hit in the right eye as hard as possible. >> So, I called my parents just to get some mercy and then he decided to call. >> Okay. Is there anything else that happened that you're weaving out? >> No. >> Okay. So, what about the wine? The bottle of wine and the cup full of wine. >> Well, I that's not true. >> Well, I mean, there's wine all over the counter and there's empty bottle of wine. He's got a cut on his face where he said that you jabbed the cuff into his face. >> I didn't jab a cup into his face. >> Okay. So, why would he have a cut on his upper lip? >> Um, my husband drinks a lot. >> Okay. How did he You said he hit you in the face. How did he hit you? >> Open palm to the right eye. >> Which hand? >> Um, I believe it was I guess it would have been his left hand and my right eye. So, what happened after that? >> Um, I called my parents immediately and just said, "I want to get out of here to be in the safe space and that's what they came." >> Okay. All right. Did he hit you anywhere else? >> Not today. Okay. >> All right. Please do me a favor. Turn around. Put the hand back up the battery. >> What? Hold on. Hold on. How did this happen? >> So, right now, based on the circumstances, you're leaving out parts of the story that are very obviously true to me that where there's wine involved and that you had been drinking. He's got obvious signs of injury on him, and you've got signs of injury that appear to be healing already, but doesn't appear that this happened to me today. He told me that you were in the hospital before and had to be strapped down. Oh, that's what the bruising has caused from all the IVs in your arm. So, >> this is the third time that I've been in trouble for getting hit. >> Okay? And that's that's also taken into account all the previous issues. Okay? However, given the circumstances, >> somebody has to go to jail there. There's obvious signs of injury, I don't have a choice. I'm mandated by the state of Illinois to make an arrest. I don't have a choice in this. This is something the state says we have to do. So, what's going to happen from here? Um, you're going to go back to the station. You're going to be processed and you're going to be transported to the New DuPage County Jail. All right? You'll see a pre-trial judge in the morning. Um, if there's any previous >> Don't put me in jail or not. >> Unfortunately, I I >> Can you put my handcuffs at least in front again? >> We're like, we're going back to the station right now. Okay. It's like three blocks away. And then I'm going to take the handcuffs off you when we get there. All right. Um, but for now, they have to stay in the back wall in the car. It's just policy. Okay. All right. So, give me a few minutes. All right. We'll be on the way. >> You have the DV sub, man. You got the DV sub. Thank you. >> Yes. Some of them are going to Well, you're cool looking. >> That's Milo. My boy. >> Excuse me. >> I'm sorry. Milo. Hi, buddy. You're cool looking. You got a cool face. >> Some of these questions might sound weird. They're just here. >> Okay. >> It's a list that I got and I got to read them off to you. >> Yes. >> You guys are husband wife? >> Yes. Uh, has there ever been an order protection issue between the two of you? >> No. >> Have we been here before? >> Yes. >> Uh, in the past, has she ever hit, slapped, kicked you or anybody else? >> Uh, me. >> It's just yes or no. >> Oh, yes. >> Yes. Okay. >> Uh, threatened to harm the police if they were called. >> Uh, that's why she has police. She That's what That's why she has a court order against her right now because she um attacked a female officer. >> I know. Would she ever threaten to harm us if you come? >> Threaten like verbally on >> No. Did he Did she ever tell you, "You call the police, I'm going to do something to him?" >> Yes. Fantasize about harming or killing someone? >> Me? Yes. >> Harm pets or other animals? >> No. Threatened to harm you if you call the police. >> Yes. >> Strangled you? >> No. >> Threatened to kill you? >> Yes. >> Threatened to kill herself? >> Yes. >> Prevented you from seeking assistance? >> As like take bones away if you try calling the police? >> No. >> Uh threatened you with any weapons. >> Well, the last time I called the police, I was on the phone with dispatch and she grabbed the knife from the knife block. So, would that be a yes? I was on the phone call with dispatch and I was I don't know if they record that but I was like she just grabbed a knife from the knife box and she was threatening me. >> Does she have access to firearms? >> No. >> She have a 40 card? >> No. You guys live together and my understanding is there was a child around. There's a child around here. >> He hasn't seen any of this. >> Okay, that's a good thing. Actually, he has no idea that you're even hearing that. He's not serious. Um, he was playing video games, but now it sounds like he's watching YouTube. >> How old is he? >> Uh, do you have Okay. Yes. Is that your only child? >> And she's the mom, right? >> She is the mom. Yeah, she is the mother. >> Okay. They You said they never witnessed this, >> correct? There's been no harm. He hasn't witnessed a whole lot of anything. >> We like if we do argue, uh he hasn't seen like anything. So that's good. >> Has your family ever been contacted by DCFS? >> No. >> Uh have either of you experienced any recent changes in your life, separation, divorce, job loss, death and family, anything? >> No, we as of yesterday, we talked about getting separated. >> Okay. >> And uh possibly fine for divorce and we rent this household. And I was I was like, "Listen, I'm going to have to um surrender this and um move on. My mom is making preparations for us to move down there." And her parents were going to help me with this and now I guarantee they're not because Yeah, they're pissed off. And uh >> does she abuse alcohol or drugs? >> Yeah, alcohol massively. >> That's what this is all about is this. She's supposed to be detoxing and I'm I don't know where she got the money for this bottle of wine because we cut her off from everything. I show up and there's a bottle of wine and then I was like that's old. That's old. And I'm like I just took the garbage out earlier cuz I I've been at baseball. My son does farm league in builder park here. So we were at baseball for the whole um end of season party and I've been gone all day long. walk in the door, not even here for 5 minutes. And >> what kind of alcohol you drink? >> Uh well, today uh >> in general, I >> uh vodka or wine? >> How often? >> Daily is the uh substance abuse increased recently? >> Yes, for sure. The last two weeks she was 145 days Well, apparently, not to off my knowledge, she admitted to her mother that she had she was getting overwhelmed that she was turning 40, wanted to be a normal person. We went to Thursday night in the park over here. She minutes she ran into some old friends. Everyone was drinking. And then we went over and had a cocktail or a mocktail, but she ordered a real one. And that's when it all really started in my world. >> Okay. And then um it went downhill from there. She's been um when she had money left over in her account, she was I found some bottles of vodka. Now I'm finding wine. >> All right. Going back to this list. Uh so she you obviously had injuries on you. Kids are fine. Did she threaten you today? Just with the >> just um any threats now. Other than throwing a cup of wine in my in my face and hitting my face. >> Disabled to remove the telephone? >> No. >> Prevented you from seeking assistance? >> No. >> Forced entry? >> No. >> Took property? >> No. >> Damaged property? >> Well, she did smash some stuff yesterday. She >> during today's argument? >> Nope. No. >> Follow stalk you? >> No. >> Threaten to attempt suicide? >> Not today. >> Okay. Are you concerned with any of the following things? Concerned about future assaults. >> If she comes back here, possibly. >> Okay. Children in the home. You have a telephone. It's not a landline, right? >> No, I just We just have cell phones here. >> Okay. You don't have a You don't have limited access to transportation. >> You have a car. >> I've taken the keys away from her. >> No, but for you. I'm talking about the We're good. Yes. No. >> Geographical distance from supports like your family member is close enough. I guess. All right, that's all we need. All right, very good. Thank you. >> Good luck with everything. >> This family's trapped in addiction and violence is loop. Rehab attempts failed. Threats escalated. A child caught in the middle. No winners here. Just pain that needs real help, not just cuffs.
