Hey, how are you doing? I'm Officer Redman with the Police Department. Is everything okay? >> Yes. >> You're all over the road back here. What's going on? >> I was on the phone. >> You're on the phone? >> Sorry. >> Okay. Do you have Are you having any kind of medical problem or anything like that? >> I'm fine. >> Okay. Do you have your license, registration, and insurance with you? >> I have my license. My registration is in my phone cuz I don't have the copy of it. >> Okay. >> Here you go. >> Where are you coming from tonight? >> Uh from Amalie from the Jingle Ball show. >> Notice how quickly the officer picks up on the driver's behavior. Crossing lanes, speeding, and even hitting a box in the road. These [music] are classic red flags. What's striking is how casual the driver seems, admitting she was on the phone. But distraction plus alcohol is a dangerous mix, >> [music] >> and the officer knows it. Just coming back this way. So you said you're coming from from where now? >> The Amalie Arena. >> Okay. What was going on over there? >> The Jingle Ball show. >> Okay. Uh I mean, what time did that Did that usually get out at like 11:00 or what happened? >> 10:30. >> Okay. Are you just now getting over here or did you go somewhere afterwards or >> I went with my boyfriend and my coworkers to the Jake What's the Jar House? >> Okay. Okay. Let me see this. How much have you had to drink tonight? >> I just had three um the two >> Okay. Can I have your full name? >> Paola. >> Paola. Paola, I'm seeing some things in your eyes that's giving me some concern as far as your level of sobriety. Would you do a couple other field sobriety exercises for me? >> Like what? >> Uh it's called the walk and turn and the one leg stand. >> That I can do because I don't have balance in like my heels. >> Do I mean I I would If you would prefer to do it without the shoes, that's absolutely >> I mean, I I can try, but >> Okay. >> It's usually with with this, I can't do it easy. >> Yeah, I mean, if I wouldn't expect you to try to do it in high heels. >> Yeah. >> Do you have any other shoes that you might would be able to to change into? >> No. >> No. Okay. Um all right, Paola. Tell you So go ahead and take take a step off. Take a step off. So I want your left foot to be the very there just like that. >> I'm telling you I have no balance. >> Again, I mean I know you got You're not going to wear the highest of heels I've ever seen you in. >> no balance regardless of the heels or not. So, that's what I was saying. You don't even want to do yoga. >> All right. So, I want you to take your right foot, touch heel to toe in front of your left foot. Okay. Make sure you're touching heel to toe. Nope, hang on. Hang on. I don't want you to do anything until I tell you to, okay? So, you're going to take a step off. All right. So, left foot on the tape for me. Left foot. There you go. Right foot, touch heel to toe in front of your left foot. Hands down by your side. And then just stay like that. Don't move until I tell you start, okay? And whenever I tell you to start, what I want you to do is take nine heel to toe steps down the line, okay? I want you to keep your hands down by your side. I want you to look down at your feet, and I want you to count each step out loud as you take it, okay? So, it's going to look like this. So, one, two, three, so forth so until nine. Now, once you get to nine, you're going to keep this front foot still. You're going to take that back foot off the line. If you If that feel more comfortable, by all means take shoes off. >> I have no balance, so I know with shoes it's not. >> By all means, if you feel more comfortable taking them off, that's perfectly fine. All right. So, left foot on the line. Right foot, touch heel to toe in front of your left foot. Okay, hands down by your side. All right. So, again, when I tell you to start, you're going to take nine heel to toe steps down the line, okay? You're going to keep your hands down by your side. You're going to look down at your feet, and you're going to count each step out loud as you take All [snorts] right. So, it's going to look like this. So, one, two, three, so forth so until nine. Now, once you get to nine, you're going to keep this front foot still. You're going to take your back foot off the line. And then using a series of small steps, turn around just like this. Okay. Once you get turned around, you're going to take nine more heel-to-toe steps back down the line just like the first time with the first step being number one. So, one two three so forth so on till you get to nine. Okay? Once you start, I don't want you to stop. >> All right. >> Nope. Hang on. Hang on. Do you understand the instructions? >> Yeah. >> Do you Do you have any questions about them? Okay. Go ahead and take your right foot touch heel-to-toe in front of your left foot. So, this is the beginning position. Very first time you take a step it's going to be number one. If you don't have any questions, you can go ahead and begin. >> One two three four five six seven >> Nice. Now, whenever I tell you to start, what I want you to do is raise one foot about 6 in off the ground. Okay? 6 in is about the length of a dollar bill or a can of Coke. I'm not going to measure it just in that ball park. Okay? It's about yay high. All right? You're going to keep both legs straight just like you got them. You're going to keep your hands down by your side just like you got them. >> Okay. >> Okay. You're going to raise one foot about 6 in off the ground. Point your toe forward in front of you to keep your foot parallel with the ground below you. I want you to look down at your toe. Count out loud 1,001 1,002 1,003 1,004 so forth so on until I tell you to stop. >> Okay. >> Okay. Do you have any questions? >> No. >> Do you understand the instructions? >> No. So, 1,000 what? >> You're going to just look while you're looking down at your toe. You're going to count out loud 1,001 1,002 1,003 1,004 1,005 and just keep counting until I tell you to stop. >> Okay. >> Okay. Do you have any Do you understand? >> Yeah. >> Any questions? >> No. >> Okay. You can go ahead and begin. >> 1,001 1,002 1,003 >> Make sure you're looking at your toe. >> Oh. 1,001 1,002 1,003 1,004 1,005 >> I want you to keep going until I tell you to stop. >> 1,000 five 1,006 1,007 1,008 1,009 1,010 1,011 1,012 1,000 13 14 15 >> All right. What I want you to do now is just go and put your hands behind your back for me. What's going on right now is you are getting placed under arrest for driving under the influence, okay? >> Really? >> Yeah, once we get down to booking I am going to ask that you submit to a breath sample. It's going to measure the amount of alcohol that you have in your system. If you don't, there's some penalties that would go along with it. Namely, your license will get suspended for a period of 1 year for a first refusal or 18 months if your license has been previously suspended for a prior refusal, okay? Will you provide a breath sample for me tonight? >> Sure. >> All right, we'll move this way. >> Okay, my shoes? >> Uh we're going to grab them. Just It's going to be a little hard for you. >> though cuz >> Yeah, I'm going to grab that. Do you Do you have a phone Is Do you have a phone and a wallet in your purse? >> Yes. >> All right, I'll grab it for you. >> And then I do need a cover >> The moment of arrest is sobering, literally. She's shocked, almost pleading, but the [music] officer calmly explains the consequences. A night in jail, a $500 bond, and the long shadow of a DUI charge. What's powerful here is the humanity. She worries about her parents yelling at her. She insists she only had three, [music] but the law doesn't measure excuses. It measures impairment. An impairment behind the wheel can cost lives. What's that? >> What's going to happen to my car? >> It's going to get towed. I'll let you know which tow truck company it is that's going to come get it. >> And what's going to happen to me? >> Uh so you're going to go down to the Orient Road Jail. That's where I'm going to ask that you provide a breath sample. Um from there you will have to stay for a minimum of 8 hours. So it's 12:30 now, so you're looking at 8:30 would be about the earliest that you could be able to get out. Um it looks It's from the information I have right now it's just a misdemeanor DUI, which typically is a $500 bond. Um so I got You had a two or three debit cards or credit cards or whatever in your in your wallets, so I'll grab those. Um if you have $500 on those, you can use those to bond yourself out. You could also go through a bail bondsman if you wanted to, which typically Okay, which typically that's like 10%, so either whichever way you do it that's that's kind of up to you. Um and then from there it all goes through the court system. So tonight you're going to go down to the Orient Road Jail. Like I said, you got to stay for 8 hours. And then the it's a $500 bond. And then after that, it's all >> So, after this, what do I have to do? >> Tonight or in the future? >> In the future. >> Uh To be honest with you, it's probably going to all go through the court system. So, depending on what the breath results are, um the state attorney might will look at it and offer like maybe a diversion program. Um potentially, I don't know. You know, that's that's up to them. Uh and then you're going to have an attorney. Either you're going to hire one or they're going to give you a public defender. And your your attorney and the state attorney will talk to each other and you know, if if your attorney feels that taking it to court is the best course of action for you, then that's what we'll do. Um if they come to an agreement and, you know, kind of kind of find something that suits everybody, then that that's something that happens a lot, too. So, I mean, there's really a lot of different possible outcomes that can happen, so I can't tell you definitively what will happen.
