Driver, step out of the car. Can >> I see my family again? You >> good? >> Yeah. >> A call about shots fired from a passing car sets officers in motion. The traffic stop that follows uncovers more than anyone expected. Evidence that could send both the driver and a passenger who claims to just be along for the ride to prison for years. >> Driver, step out of the car. [Applause] Hands in the air. Face away from me. [Music] >> From your collar of your shirt, raise your shirt so we can see your waistband. >> No. >> Keep your hands up. >> Turn around slowly. >> He thinks one of them possibly hit his house. >> Keep turning. Stop. >> Turn it back away from me again. Face away from me and stop. Walk backwards. Keep your hands up and walk backwards. Stop. Without turning, walk to your right. Stop. Continue to walk backwards. Y'all >> got it. >> Yeah. Put your hands behind your back. For what? >> Put your hands behind your back. >> For what? >> Put your hands behind your back. >> Put your hands behind your back. >> For what? >> After removing the driver, police turned their attention to the passenger, directing him to step out of the car in an effort to uncover the truth behind reports of gunfire from the vehicle. Passenger, open the door from the outside if you can. >> All right. Open the door from the inside, but keep your hands where we can see them. >> Can I take my seat belt off? >> Remove your seat belt. Put your hands back where we can see them. >> Let me know when you can see. >> All right. I can see both. >> Step out of the car. Turn around and face away from us. >> Grab the collar of your shirt and raise it up. Spin. >> Stop. >> Straight back. Yep. Straight back. >> Walk backwards. >> Keep coming. >> You got a light. >> Keep coming. Stop right there. >> Yes, sir. >> Put your hands behind your back for me. >> Yes, sir. >> She's being detained right now. >> I paid for >> Huh? >> I paid for the ride. >> Okay, I got you. Just hang tight for me. >> I I understand. We're going to talk. >> Where? >> Right here. Literally. >> Okay. >> Whose house is this? Hey Stephanie, get some light and come over to >> Huh? >> Yeah, that's that's my brother's landlord. There's nobody else in the car. >> All right, come back here, man. >> You got ID on you anyway? >> I don't have an ID on >> Okay. What's your name? >> Mitchell King. >> Mitchell King. >> Once removed from the vehicle, the passenger is questioned and quickly shifts the blame to the driver for any illegal activity. >> You are detained. >> Okay. You're not under arrest, but you're not free to go, right? Yes, sir. >> You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in the court of law. You have the right to have an attorney present during any and all questioning. If you can't afford one, one will be appointed to you. Do you understand those rights? >> At any point, you can choose to not talk to me and ask for a lawyer. Um, >> you understand that? >> What's going on? >> I paid him for a ride home. >> Okay. How do you know? >> I was downtown. My brother had left me. My brother just pulled in. I didn't know where he went. >> Okay. And I was trying to get home, >> okay? >> And he just pulled out the gun and started shooting. I don't know. I'm like, "What the hell, dude?" Okay. >> And he passed the driveway. I don't I'm going to do this. I'm just trying to go home. My brother downtown. >> So, but this guy >> has a gun. >> He had He had one. >> Where is it? >> I think seen it on. I don't know where it is. >> Okay. Did you see him throw it out the car at all while y'all were driving? >> No. >> So, it's still in the car. >> The shot didn't even come from our car. >> The f The first shot didn't come from our car. Okay, >> I'm I'm being honest with you. They >> But then he started shooting after the >> he was like it was like they were coming at us. So he shot out the window and then he seen all coming down the road in there. I guess I was just trying to >> Okay. So where do you live? >> Right there. Literally where that plate's at. Where that corn just >> Okay. The trailer. >> Yes. >> Right there. >> Yes. >> Okay. So what did he pull in here for? >> Because he seen all he passed from my brother's driveway where I live. >> Yeah. But he saw the blue lights. >> He passed the driveway. So he pulled in here. He was going to turn around and take me to pull back in there. >> Okay. But >> instead of pulling back out, he y'all just stayed here and laid back. >> I know, but but what what was he doing that for? >> Ask him. I just did what he said. >> Okay. >> You don't know him? >> I paid him $10 for >> Okay. Never met him before. >> No, I seen him on sidewalk paid. >> Negative. >> Okay. >> My brother had left downtown. I was just trying to get home, man. I don't >> I don't know what to do with this, bro. I've never been in trouble. >> Gotcha. Okay. >> Could y'all just tell my brother to call my dad? >> Yeah, just just hang tight, man. Um, like I said, right now, obviously, you know why we're out with you? So, >> I just paid him $10. >> Okay. Gotcha. Okay. How many times did he fire his weapon? >> I only seen him fire once, but I'm not going to lie to you, but the first shot come from us. Was it right before y'all got to us when he fired his weapon? >> No, that's when we heard the shots >> and then you fired afterwards. >> Well, when we heard the shots, he came past y'all. He was like, "What the hell? Did they just shoot at us?" So, he's shot out window. >> Okay, gotcha. All right. The officers then turned back to the driver seeking his version of events. >> You got anything on you that you didn't know about? All right. Should have been nothing found on me. >> What's your name, bud? >> My name is Samuel Adams. >> Samuel Adams. Is that your vehicle? It's registered to you? >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> But >> 35 cent. We're out with the registered owner. >> I don't see how anything should be registered. >> You don't see how anything should be registered to you? I don't see how anything in a car can be tied to me when y'all pull me out of a vehicle and let another person pass us right after you fire gunshots and then you come down here some more gunshots. >> I didn't fire any gunshots. >> Yeah. >> So, who did? >> I don't know who did. >> That's interesting. Who's the gentleman that was in the car with you, bud? >> I really don't even know. I just picked him up from downtown. >> Gotcha. If y'all looking at wristbands, >> y'all see I was just talking. >> I literally not been >> Okay. >> The driver begins laying the groundwork for denial, suggesting that if any contraband is found in the car, it belongs to the passenger. >> Can I ask one question? >> Yes. >> How is it y'all can pull me out of the vehicle and leave another person inside again? Well, we can't pull both of y'all out of the vehicle at the same time. >> Oh, >> because it's unsafe because why we were getting out with you. It's unsafe for us to pull multiple people out and deal with multiple people at once. >> Okay. So, can I ask a question? >> Do you understand your rights? >> I do. >> Okay. Are you willing to talk to me? >> No. Can I ask question? Can I ask a question? >> You're not willing to talk to me? What is there to >> I'm I'm allowed to ask questions, right? >> I don't know. Can I ask you questions? >> I mean, you can >> I can't though because you just invoked your right to not talk to me. >> I don't >> What's your question? >> Where is a warrant at? >> I don't need a warrant. >> For why not? >> Because it's a vehicle. >> What do you mean it's a vehicle? >> A vehicle can be moved. If it were a house, I'd have to have a search warrant because that any evidence that I'm looking for of a crime can't that house can't be moved. So, I have to go get a warrant. >> So, >> for a vehicle, there's a search warrant exception. >> Okay. So, if I was pulled out of the vehicle first. >> Okay. >> Okay. I'll let another person inside the vehicle. >> Yep. >> What if he was to leave something inside the vehicle? >> What if he What? >> What if he was to leave something inside the vehicle? What did he leave inside the vehicle? >> I don't know what he might have left inside the I don't know the person. >> Okay. So, you just give a random person a ride home? >> Yes, cuz I just left him downtown. >> Yeah. >> I can show you. >> Okay. >> I just left from downtown. >> Gotcha. >> I gave a person a ride. >> Okay. >> So, outside of that, I don't know anything. But thing is though is what this man had drugs or paraphernia on him. Okay. >> Or anything else. >> Is there anything in the vehicle that I should be worried about? >> Not from my end, but I don't know the individual I just gave a ride to. >> Okay. All right. Watch out. >> Hey. Uh, >> police begin searching the driver's car and quickly locate contraband. But what they uncover next goes far beyond what anyone expected. A variety of drugs and a cache of weapons that would make John Wick proud. >> Got cut straws. >> There's weed. >> Oh, that's strong. >> There's rifle round there. >> You did? >> Yeah. Okay. Up green tips >> package material. >> Yeah. Is that one that doesn't distribute? [Applause] Find that. There's something in this, but it's locked. >> They definitely dipped on King and pulled in his driveway >> and they laid they were both laid back real far. >> Yeah. In the car. After completing their search, officers recovered drug paraphernalia along with 16 gram of a fentanyl mixture, over 200 g of methamphetamine, and 30 pills of amphetamine. They also seized a cache of firearms, including a 40 caliber Glock 22, two Glock 17 9mm pistols, a 5.56 AR- style pistol, and a 5.56 AR- style rifle. Now that drugs and weapons have been uncovered, the stakes are higher. An officer returns to the passenger, pressing to determine his level of involvement. >> We We have some We have some other No, I don't I don't think so. Um, but we do have a house that was actually shot up where he was shooting. >> Um, >> well, I know I'm I'm saying you were in the car and you've kind of verified all the stories and stuff at this point. So, >> um, >> so just verify the story with me again. So, y'all take a right on to Cedar Scholes. >> Come up Cedar Scholes. He never fires around on Cedar Scholes. >> Yeah. I mean, I'm good enough to charge it. Man, I don't know. All this happened so damn fast. He fired shots. He probably did hit a house. He'll be stupid as [ __ ] That's dumb. I'm going to jail for nothing. >> I got you. And then before he rode by us, he fired around and then fired around after us. >> Um, multiple rounds. >> Yeah. Three, something like that on this. >> Okay, I got you. Um, I >> This is crazy, bro. I I don't I'm gonna make this is this is going to be a suggestion and this is just my name's Jimmy >> Mitchell. This is this is just me to you. >> Be very mindful about who you're jumping in a car with cuz that man had >> No, I understand. But >> he had multiple ounces of meth. >> Um that he's trying to say does not belong to him. >> You come on. Oh, >> I'm I'm just telling you. >> We know that that [ __ ] ain't >> I'm I'm just telling you. >> So, you should blame it on me. So, what you're saying when I don't own that vehicle? >> Absolutely. >> What bag did I have? I went down in a club. >> Listen, I'm just telling you like, >> like I said, this isn't this isn't like Sergeant King. And >> I'm not trying to be Mr. King. This is I'm just frustrated. This is Sergeant. This is Jimmy telling you be mindful about who you're getting in a car with because >> who the hell knows what that person is or what he's done or what he's going to do and he's just put you in a really bad spot. So, >> in an effort to get the driver to confess, officers bring in someone familiar. An officer who has dealt with him in the past. >> What's going on, Sam? >> Not much. How's Bill? >> Is he still around? >> Damn. >> Is he really? >> Did he die while you were in? >> Last year. >> Well, listen. Uh, you want to talk to anybody about any of this stuff? >> Huh? >> I mean, you've been down the road already. You know, you know how you know how all that works. But this time it's a lot better than last time, right? >> I mean, all you went for last time was the meth. I don't think we did the gun, did we? >> Got conficted on the gun >> in the feds. I got conficted on I got I got convicted by the state and the fed for the same case. >> Who what did the state give you on that one? >> 15 years probation. The time they gave me were ran concurrent with my fed time. >> And was that for the was that for the heroin >> or No, we didn't get the heroin, right? Cuz you you had left that at your house. >> Heroin? >> Yeah. I I I already know everything, man. You know, I mean, I'm I I know you didn't you didn't have any heroin with you. Was at the house. >> I didn't sell heroin >> back then. You had some food. >> Oh, I didn't. >> All right. >> Like heroin, heroin, fitting, all that's never been my my thing. >> All right. What about tonight? >> Tonight? >> Yeah. >> I can take credit for the gun and the cocaine. >> All right. Whose car is that? It's your car. >> That's my car. >> What What gun are you taking credit for? >> The one that was in the trunk. The AR. >> What about any others? >> The only one I know about is the fullsize AR. >> There were other guns in the trunk though. I'm I'm positive there was, but the one that was mine was the full size AR. >> Who the other ones belong to? >> I guess that guy. >> How do you know him? >> Through a friend. We supposed to go shoot a TV. >> Shoot a TV. >> The TV went out. It didn't work. >> Okay. So, y'all were just like target practicing or whatever. >> Yeah, we was going to shoot the TV. I wanted to toppers and um I didn't even know about the [ __ ] the pistol that was inside the car like until like we're riding and he just hangs out window like bow bow. So I that wasn't even one of the like that wasn't even one of the guns that was shot at the TV early. >> I got you. Like I didn't even know about that car or that gun. But >> the gun that was mine was the full size AR. >> Okay. >> May I ask your name? >> Yeah. Smith. >> Officer Smith. >> Yeah. I'm I'm the one that indicted you on that last case. I don't think we met cuz you you had been arrested by those guys in special ops. Barnett and was it Barnett Dwit? Is that right? >> I believe so. So, did you did you let any of those any of those rounds out of the car? >> No, >> it was just him. >> Okay. What were y'all shooting at when y'all did that? Or when he did that, >> man? shot into the [ __ ] side of the road like it was like in a ditch. >> Where were y'all at? >> Like We came down by uh came down by like a road that seemed to stop sign right there. >> Yeah. >> Busted left and shot like two or three rounds right there. >> Let me uh let me ask you this. >> So, did he have his hand out the window when he was shooting? Yeah, he shot like at the like can't really say where he shot, but like it like he was like aimed at the ground. >> I gotcha. >> Like like he was shooting into a ditch. >> He just wanted to shoot. >> So would there be is there any reason that uh So I'm I'm going to tell you what we're going to do. We're going to do the whole like, you know, it's called GSR, gunshot residue kit. You know, you know what that means? Like doing swab of hands and all that. >> I mean, can I have my boy around when I do this? >> No, we're going to do that when we get to the jail. >> I'd rather have my boy around. >> I understand. Um, >> is that going to be is that going to be on you? >> I mean, we've been shooting all day. >> I got you. >> Like I told you, we went early to shoot TV. >> I got you. >> So, I can't say >> that it won't be on you right now. Yeah, >> I got you. >> I'm pretty sure there is gun residue on me, but like I said earlier today >> went out to shoot a TV. >> All right. So, you said the one AR, the one full size AR is yours. Is that the one with that big scope on it >> or it's got a scope on it? Not a big scope, but a scope. >> Okay. Um, >> I'm I'm also going to tell you this because you you know, you've been to prison. You you know your DNA is on file, right? Huh? >> I already know. >> Yeah. So, you know, we quit. We've really kind of quit doing the whole fingerprint thing. And that's what we do with guns now. Any of those other guns that were in your car, your is your DNA going to be on it? >> I mean, you know what guns you've handled. So, that's the thing. >> I'm sure. >> Okay. >> Now, let's go ahead. The only one that is mine is the full size AR. >> I gota >> anything else is the full size AR, the cocaine, and the weed is mine. >> Are there any other drugs in the car? >> I don't know. I really can't answer that question. Cocaine weed is mine. The driver was arrested and convicted of trafficking in illegal drugs. He also entered guilty pleas to possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and to multiple counts of possession of prohibited weapons, including a saw-edoff shotgun and a machine gun. The passenger was also taken into custody on an outstanding warrant from another county. If you enjoyed this content, please like and subscribe and stick around.
