[Music] the rest area. Thursday, June 27th, 2024, Wood County, Ohio. The Ohio State Highway Patrol was conducting a routine traffic operation on northbound I75 when a trooper from the Lima Post attempted to pull over a vehicle clocked at 86 mph in a 70 mph zone. That's when things took an unexpected turn and patrol units were dispatched minutes later to pursue the suspect. I'm Tyler and this is your daily dose of crime. [Music] We're three with it. Taking off again. [Music] When the trooper activated his lights and signaled the vehicle to pull over, the driver hit the gas and fled, initiating a high-speed chase. The pursuit was momentarily disrupted near County Road 99 in Hancock County as the suspect's vehicle entered a construction zone, but once it cleared the area, troopers were back on the chase. Troopers executed a rolling roadblock maneuver near State Route 613, boxing the vehicle in and the suspect came to a brief stop, but then took off once again, reigniting the pursuit. He's out on foot. He's out on foot. He's running east the rest area. Oh 31 31 31 involving uh 804. Are you all right? Yeah, I'm all right. Okay, I think okay. [Music] I'm good, I think. Okay. Just before 7 a.m., the suspect's vehicle pulled into a rest area just south of US Route 6 in Wood County and crashed into the north end of the parking lot. The suspect bailed out and fled on foot. And that's when things took a dramatic turn. As one of the patrol cars tried to reenter northbound traffic from the rest area, it was struck by a semi-truck traveling north on the interstate. Dispatch, we can cancel 40. Signal 40 cancel 704. Signal 40 cancel. So, did he go by me? Well, you went past us when we stopped, right? He was down that way. I saw him running back the field this way. Okay. And then we got him just down here in the back. Okay. Does he have any ID on him at all? When you tried to stop him, did he have already or did he hit something? Are you hurt? Yo, man. Are you hurt? I don't remember seeing any damage on the video, though. I was pointing it right at him when I took [Applause] out like he did something. Are you okay? [Music] Hey, go ahead. You have a right to stop. You have a right to talk to a lawyer for advice before asking any questions and have a lawyer present with you during question. Do you understand? If you're unable to pay a lawyer, one will be appointed to you prior to any question if you so desire. Do you understand? If you wish to answer question now with a lawyer present, you have a right to stop answer question at any time. Do you understand? You also have the right to stop for answer anytime. Do you talk to the lawyer? Do you understand your constitution rights? Has that been read to you, sir? You guys a knife? Two officers described how they apprehended the suspect shortly after he exited the vehicle and tried to make a run for it. The suspect, identified as Javon L. Johnson, did not resist when officers caught up to him and placed him in the handcuffs. At that point, he was out of options and had no choice but to surrender. But what was he running from in the first place? Suspect nodded for understanding his constitutional rights. Put him in there. Where'd you lose your shoes at? No, you don't get that. You don't get that. I'll talk to you in a minute. You don't get that. I'm not in jail yet, bro. Okay. I'm not in jail yet. I got it. You kids on the phone, bro. At least I hang up at the sit the entire time we've been open. Okay. What' you crash into? A wall. A wall. Well, you crash into something south down south somewhere. Yeah. Um, no, I believe it was just the one. Yeah. Yeah. No, I think it was just the one. Yep. He hit a semi. I don't know what he hit. It started down in Finley. Okay. He might have smoked something, but he definitely smoked the wall. Of the double lock these. All right, I'll tell you what. Let's go. Okay. Yeah. Charles 1271. Robert Charles 12771. Johnson was placed in a patrol car and transported to the nearby station for further evaluation. And based on his erratic behavior and slurred speech, officers suspected he may be under the influence. He was visibly unsteady on his feet and had trouble responding clearly to basic questions. A thorough search of his vehicle would be necessary to gather evidence and uncover what might have led to the initial flight. hearing a report of one that was injured during this person. Yeah. I'm not sure where he lost his shoes. He came from further east like back those pine trees and stuff that way. Okay. So, I think maybe cuz cuz like I was right here when he crashed. I mean, he went he jumped in the rest area. Okay. and and I was number two in the pursuit taking over radios and when he jumped in I knew we had him trapped. So I came in this way and by the time I turned I hear the crash and he's already out. I'm like I know where to go. And the guy who was behind him said he went up and so I figured come jump the fence. I heard jump fence north of the rest area. So I'm guessing you know it's just the one on the other side of the road here and then then he went that way cuz I went that way. I'm thinking he's no way he's going to come back this way. Right. Well, good. I'm glad he said good morning. So, he was stuck down here. So, he got he was on this side of the road coming back this way. And then he just made it to the trees here and then just You think he saw me and jumped back down or something? He it could have. Uh because you had just passed us. We stopped there and we started walking up cuz I figured he's got to be right here and as soon as you were up past that's when he came this way out of the the pine trees over there. Okay. So if you went that way, you spooked him back and then he was just coming across that little open field. It works. Yeah. [Applause] At the station, Johnson was subject to a pre-DUI screening. Officers searched his clothing and made sure he wasn't carrying anything that could be relevant to the case. As the process continued, Johnson began to show signs of tension, and the truth started to unravel. I've got a couple questions for you. Have you been in a hospitalized 248 hours? Have you been in a hospital last 24 48 hours? Car accident last 24 48 hours today. Today was it during the Yes. Do you currently feel like hurting yourself or anyone else? No. By the take for you. speak with officer waiting. No cash in here. I got cash on in here on you. All right. Yeah. Are you going to need phone numbers out of your phone? You're going to need phone numbers out of your phone. No. All right. I'll shut it off for you. If it's on, go ahead and just turn around for me. We'll patch it down. Figure out where this cash is. Face this wall right here for me. Come on. Zip. Okay. I'll grab it. Don't worry about it. Good. Keep your left foot up for me real quick. I'm going to take your sock off of you and then I'll let you put it back on once I'm done looking at your feet. All right. Same thing with this foot. He's coming in now. She just pulled in, man. What's that? She just pulled in. This is all new operations, man. I thought maybe you could get in a little easier than that. [Music] No, he was northbound. He was northbound. Okay. You come from mama. Mr. Johnson, come on. Let's step up against the wall for me facing you, please. All right. Do you have any issues with your eyes as far as your eye contact or anything like that? All right. Can you see me clearly? Go ahead and put your hands on your chin like that for me. Okay. All right. Can you see the very top of this pen? See the very top? I want you to follow with your eyes. Don't move your head. Okay. Just keep your eyes on that top of that pin. Okay. All right. All right. All right. Do me a favor here. Okay. All right. See this line here? Okay. I want you to stand on I'm going to show you. I want you to stand with your right foot in front of your left. Excuse me. Excuse me. Yeah. Your right foot in front of your left. Okay. Stand just like that. On that line. On this line here. Okay. Stand on that line. All right. Stay right there like that for me. Okay. And what I want you to do when I tell you to when I tell you to start, I want you to take nine heel to toe steps. All right. Looking down at your feet, Connie, you step out loud touching heel to toe. All right. It's going to be 1 2 3 4. On your ninth step, you hold that foot down there and you turn. You go back. The first step you take is one, two, I count each step out loud. Okay. One, two. Face the wall for me this way. Come back this way. Come back this way a little bit. Come back. Come back towards me. But face the wall. All right. Now, put your hands down to your side. All right. And whichever leg you want, I want you to raise it about 6 in off the ground and point your toe just like that. All right. And what I want you to do is count to 30 by a th00and th00and 1 th00and 2003 until I tell you to stop. Okay? 1 5 2 3 5 400 feet together against your side. Hold that position till you start the test. Okay. When I tell you to begin, you're going to lean your head back. You're going to gently close your eyes. Once I say start, you're going to estimate the passage of 30 seconds in your head. Okay. Once you think 30 seconds have passed, you're going to lean back forward, look me in the eye, and tell me stop. Okay? You have any questions about that? All right. So, this is how it's going to look. Here's where you are. Let me tell you, lean your head back. Gently close your eyes. I'll say start. When you start estimating the passage of 30 seconds in your head, once you think 30 seconds has passed, look me back in the eye and tell me stop. Okay? Yep. Just like that. Gently close your eyes and begin. start. Do you smoke? Yes. Yeah. You on any prescriptions for your ADHD, Adderall, anything like that? Um, sometimes. Sometimes. Okay.
