You didn't go to McDonald's? No, we coming from the hotel. You were just having I'm saying we did McDonald's. We did a whole U-turn. So, it first went to You didn't go to McDonald's. Now, all of a sudden, you went driving through McDonald's. Did you have an altercation with somebody there? An employee? No. Monday, August 28th, 2024. West Lake, Ohio. Police receive a call from employees at a fast food franchise reporting that a customer had assaulted them after receiving an order. When officers arrive on scene, they discover the suspect had already left. However, escaping would not be that easy. Thanks to surveillance footage, police were able to identify the license plate of the suspect's vehicle and locate him shortly after. And what they didn't expect was how absurd the conversation with the young man would become. I'm Tyler and this is your daily dose of crime. Hi, I'm officer with Leslie. Please you guys, why'd you do that U-turn right there? Because we're trying to find a trying to find Wendy's. We thought it was a turn right here to go inside Wendy's and it's not. I'm sorry. Okay. You thought it was a turn right here. Turn right here to Wendy's, but we credit I got you. Do you have your driver's license on you guys? Yes, ma'am. Do you have yours on you, ma'am? Um, I don't, but I have a picture of my ID. That works for me. Sorry. We're not from this area, so we didn't realize that it wasn't one right there. Where you from? We're coming from Lraine. Oh, okay. It's just I just get that drive. Oh, sorry. Sorry. Oh, it's okay. So, you guys were just looking for somewhere to eat. Yeah, we were going to be right here. Turn off the car real quick. Thank you. And go ahead, take a step out and uh talk to my officer that's behind you. Okay. Just Yep. No, you can stay in the car for a second. What's up, man? How you doing? Good. Give me a fair close your door. I just don't want you car to get taken off by a car or something. I'm not going to No, no, no. I don't want a car to come by and take your door up on the sidewalk over here, man. Uh, no weapons or anything on you? No, sir. No. Okay. Do you care if I patch you down? Is that okay? Do me a favor just to put your hands right on the wall right there. After attempting to speak with the suspect and his girlfriend, officers were met with repeated denials about whether they had visited any fast food restaurant recently. Something was clearly off. The young man's clothing matched exactly what the suspect was wearing in the footage, and the license plate was the same as the one captured on camera. There was no doubt police had the right person. It was the same individual who had assaulted the fast food workers earlier. So why was he lying? You guys are coming from where? Chipotle. Which hotel you guys staying at? You put your back against the wall. It's on my phone if you wanted. No, you're good. Just put your back against the wall. Relax. So where are you guys coming from? The hotel. Which hotel did you guys stay at? Uh my phone. The hill. No, I got I know you guys saw us, right? We're in a big town. I don't know which hotel this is. This one we at though. That's why we did a U-turn cuz we didn't we turned right here cuz we thought we going we turn right in into Wendy's. Okay. So, we turn left. We turn left and we thought we turn right. We couldn't turn left. Okay. Gotcha. All right. What? Got it. Okay. Um, what brings you out to Westlake? I know you guys are from Lraine, but today is my birthday. Today is your birthday. You celebrating? Yes, sir. How old are you getting? 22. 22. Happy birthday. Thank you. Appreciate it. So, did you guys did you hit any of the restaurants around here while you were here? No. No. Uh, it's about to be my first time eating. I've been eating all day because I was busy over my birthday going on and everything. Vehicle registering. That's your girl there. Y. Okay. All right. Well, we had to figure some stuff out, right? Um, obviously traffic violation, too. But we got another call from McDonald's over here and we just have to verify information and then we'll go from there. Okay. You give your other officer your license already? Yeah. I ain't got no question. Okay. Any weapons in the car? No, sir. No weapons in the car. No, sir. All right. You're going to hang out with these officers here. Said you didn't go anywhere else. You didn't go to McDonald's? Uh, no. I was coming from the uh the hotel. You didn't go to McDonald's? No. No. No. Why would they why would they describe your car and your license plate to a T? I don't know. And if we didn't, we probably did like a whole U-turn or something like that. But we ain't I ain't stopping D for no fool or nothing. I'm just waiting for you to start telling me the truth. No, I am. I am. No, you're not. You were just You were just having McDonald's. No. No. No. I'm saying what I'm saying. We did do McDonald's. We did a whole U-turn. And we was at McDonald's. Yeah. Um Did you have an altercation with somebody there? Employee? No. No. No. Uh when we were talking to somebody uh so first so first went to you didn't go to McDonald's and all of a sudden you went driving through McDonald's saying no I'm not saying that I'm sorry I had me nervous before stop here I'm sorry you shouldn't be nervous you're just telling the truth I know I know I'm sorry but I'm saying I'm I'm telling you being honest with you I No I'm saying let me finish go ahead please I'm sorry as the questioning continued the young man's story became more inconsistent and each time he tried to repeat his initial version, more details would change, and officers quickly noticed the lies piling up. With information in hand, police were in a position to make the arrest, but they had to give him a chance to come clean to potentially reduce the severity of the outcome. The young man refused to cooperate, and his responses grew more and more irrational. Did he really not understand that continuing to lie would only make things worse? I said, "There's four cops up here, a black young man. I have me nervous right now. I'm sorry. I Why would you be nervous with four cops? Because I'm I have never been in this position before with four cops. But why would you why would your race have anything to do with that? Because I'm a black young man. Well, he's a black officer. I can't tell. It's dark. I can't really tell. Okay, but that's not a reason to be nervous. Why would you think we're going to just be I'm not saying like that, sir. I'm just saying. Yeah, you are. Is what you were. No, I'm not. You know what I'm saying? You know what I mean though? Like I'm a black young man, though. I mean, America not land of the free, huh? Land of the free and we're trying and if you told us the truth, we could we could be go on with the stop and be done with it. No, I'm saying I'm saying y'all have me nervous when I'm I'm trying to I'm trying to get you. But nervousness doesn't get you to lie. I'm not. You know, you know you were at McDonald's. You know you had a problem. All right. So, look. Tell you this, sir. I'm sorry. I'm tell you this, sir. We stopped. We didn't stop at McDonald's, but we stopped there. We stopped there to find something to drink and stuff. I It was the wrong order and she had put the cup out of the door. I'm saying I truth now. Mhm. My dad, but I'm telling you truth. She had put the cup out of the door. Yeah, you got it already. I don't pick it up. She closed the door on us. She closed the door on us. We trying to tell her we haunt the horn. We haunt the horn. We trying to tell her that we were going to pick it up. She didn't want to close the window, everything. Close the window, everything. I'm like, and she screamed to whoever. She said, she exactly she said. She said said, "Uh, can we get a cancel order or something or whatever." He's like, "Can we get a cancel order or something or whatever?" Because because you do you put the he you put the drink outside of the door and I know what's wrong, but we tried to go to her and tell her we were going to pick it up, but she came to us and she sent the door on us. She didn't get a chance for us to say we're going to pick it up or nothing. She said the door on the employee. Yeah, the employee. If you go back, I'll probably do everything. 7982 units on that stop. One of you guys did you spit on him at any time? Spit on No, I didn't spit on him. I didn't spit on him. Why would the employ Why would the employees say that you did? No, I didn't spit on him. Did Did the girl spit on her? No. No, nobody spit on her. Uh uh speaking, I probably spit on my but I ain't I ain't spit on her. I got you. And they were mad. They probably said that. Why? Where did you Where'd you leave your friends at? They have their own car. Oh, they're following. They describe. It's my birthday. I I'm just trying to have a good time. I'm not even I wasn't even trying to I expect to happen. Oh, I'm I'm hungry. I a eat nothing all day. I'm trying to go to Wings because they didn't even let us get our food. They got our food wrong. Everything. So, do you still have food for McDonald's or I have a drink, sir? Have a drink. That's all I have. All I have is a drink. Is that That's what you said you went there for, right? A drink. A drink. That's drink. No, a drink and something else on the side. But they they didn't get us right because they said they didn't have it. And and only reason why they cancelled the order because she put the he put the drink outside of of the car. That's the only reason why to be honest. After multiple attempts, the young man finally admitted he had gone to the fast food restaurant and had gotten upset because the order was wrong. However, he refused to admit he had assaulted or disrespected an employee over a simple mistake. He showed no understanding of how inappropriate and aggressive that his behavior had become and he remained firmly unwilling to admit he had done anything wrong. Somebody else give it to you. Well, McDonald's employees didn't want to press chargers on you. So, you're going to turn around chargers on your hand behind your back. What? What? They press chargers. What did I do? Tent up. Spit on somebody. I did not spit on nobody. I didn't spit on nobody. All right. I didn't spit on nobody. You got any weapons on you? No, sir. I didn't spit on nobody. And y'all leaving that right now? No way. Today is my birthday. No. No. I wasn't trying to act like my birthday. I'm sure they're going to have video, too. More than likely. Sir, they don't they don't call us every day for this type of play. Okay. Do you have any weapons on you? No sir, man. Sir, I didn't mean to do anything. You think it's going to hurt you or me? No sir. I didn't mean to do anything wrong. I don't think they're going to call us to make up lies. That's my phone. I said we don't get calls every day from McDonald's. As officers place him under arrest, the man repeatedly insists that he had done nothing wrong and even mentioned that it was his birthday, as if that might somehow stop officers from taking him to jail. What stood out the most was not just what had happened, but how convinced the young man seemed to be that he was innocent. What did he think would happen if he lashed out at other people over such a minor issue? Hey folks. Yeah, we both called. I didn't know she was I wasn't I just got off and I was watching the situation. So, okay. All right. Um, so we also got a notice for a panic alarm. Was that kind of for the same reason? Oh, panic alarm. Yeah, for your front counter. Oh, Paige must have hit that. I mean, that's that's for that's for robberies and like that. But it really extremely So, what was So, what was going on exactly? So, they were um they were really aggressive. They were throwing trash out their windows in our drive-thru. So, we asked them if they could not do that and clean up after themselves. They refused, were getting aggressive and verbal with my crew. So, what I did was basically, okay, well, you're being verbally aggressive and you're refusing to clean up after yourself. I can give you a refund so you can head on your way and redo it and do it right. So, I gave him a cash refund, but um the door was locked cuz he was as I was doing getting the refund put together, there's loud banging and he's literally banging the window and it's locked so he can't get in. Banging the window of the drive. Yeah, they had to keep he kept beeping the car and I did not want to talk to him anymore. So, what what what started all this? They were just throwing their trash out. You guys told them throwing their trash out there. And then they started laughing, thinking it's real funny. I'm like I like I didn't think anything was funny. I politely asked them, "Hey, can you please pick up that trash?" Looked at each other, laughed. I said, "Okay, Madison, can I get a refund on their order?" They weren't too happy anymore. Not laughing as much, right? So then I go in the I I just close the door, honestly, and I just walk away, wait for her to get the thing. They're beeping. They're they're making a fuss and I'm just like, "Bro, this is so too much over McDonald's, right?" Yeah. And then I'm like waiting for her to come back to get the um cash. He finally has a cash beeping. He's starting to get mad and bang out the window cuz he's being impatient that genuine like cuz he wants his food or something. He He's saying he's saying at the window, I want my money. But it takes time to get your money, right? You got to get a refund, right? The money. I gave him the receipt, the refund receipt. Um, and then after I hand cuz I have to unlock the door to and then when he I open the door, he spits at us and it gets on my face and my arm and then I close the door and he throws a drink. He threw a drink at you. He threw a drink at us. Two. Actually, I think there was three. So, was it pretty much all his drinks? It was Yeah, he went away with nothing. Yeah. Okay. Threw him back at the window. money on. I could see parking on the other side of the bush, but I heard a hole and threw the window. But I was like, yo, I'm like, I'm sitting in the parking lot. And then I started hearing the aggression of him pounding on the window like hard as And then that's what made me hang up my phone call to call you guys because I mean 90% women in here. Not that they can't handle. Yeah, he's screaming at me the whole time. I'm like I'm like I need to do something. I would have but I didn't know. So spitting. He spit on you on your at your on your face and on your arm and they threw the drink at you guys. Did that just hit the window or did it actually go in? Thankfully, it hit the window. Okay. All right. The victims gave a detailed account of the incident and explained the sequence of events. The suspect had not only thrown their drinks and insulted workers, but it also spit on them and repeatedly disrespected them. The situation spiraled into chaos all because of one small mistake with an order. How could something like this even happen? A short time later, the young man was officially arrested and transported to jail on a charge of menacing. Depending on the circumstances of the offense and his criminal history, potential outcomes include probation or court-ordered restitution.
