behind the ground. Yes. Okay. He just had open heart surgery. Okay. Monday, August 28th, 2023. Ashtabula, Ohio. Agents from the Ohio State Highway Patrol receive a radio alert. Other officers had attempted to stop a dark gray Audi on I90 westbound near State Route 534, but the vehicle had continued driving. A chase was underway and officers were doing everything they could to stop the vehicle before it was too late. I'm Tyler and this is your daily dose of crime. 1159 1866. Be advised, APD is in pursuit westbound on 90 from Route 11. taking 631. Put your hands up. The pursuit continued into Lake County where the vehicle exited the highway at State Route 528 in Madison, colliding with a van containing two people. The situation is clearly critical. The van had suffered significant damage and authorities are concerned about the condition of the victims. What would lead to such a dangerous escape behind the ground? [Applause] 1159 warn one. One secured. You got him. Anybody else in the car? Anybody in there? Looks clear. It looks clear. I'm going to check on these guys. Are you all right? Okay, stay with me. Okay, stay with me. Keep talking to me, man. Okay, we're not all right. No. Okay, squad's on the way. On the way. Okay. Do you have anything hurt besides your hand that you know of? Okay, keep talking with me. Keep going. Okay. Hit hard. Oh my god. A is on the way. Oh my god. Oh, okay. Everything's going to be I just Okay. He just had open heart surgery. Okay. Squad's in route. They're coming. Okay, they're coming. They're coming. Okay, the driver identified as Elijah Schultz is apprehended by officers while they assist the victims and check on their condition. The police call EMS and work to provide immediate assistance to the victims. You guys have any cuts you're aware of? Any beside besides anything major bleeding? I don't I nothing you know of? I don't know. I don't think so. Oh my glasses. I have no idea what it is. What was with that guy? Just come out of nowhere. I don't I Yeah, he came right through there. We seen it all. We were actually chasing him. He was Oh my god. He was running. Yeah. Funny. What? Okay. Stay stay with me, man. Okay. I don't want to get you out yet cuz I don't know. I don't want you to move you around. Okay. We looks like you're not trapped, though. That's a good thing. That's a good thing. Okay. What was your name again? Robert Adams. Robert Adams. Yes. And my name's Jane Carson. Oh, I feel like Okay, here comes the ambulance. Here comes the empty guys. Okay, they're going they're going to help you out. You guys get an ID on him? I did not. So, okay. Holster and some on the floorboard. Okay. Is the car yours? I don't know. You don't know if the car is yours? It's mine, but it's in my the grandma's name. It was a congratulations. Do you live with your grandma? Uh, as of right now, yeah. And what's your name? Elijah Schultz. Elijah. Schultz. S H S H S C H U L T Z. Why were you running? I was scared. It was an unmarked vehicle that pulled me over. I heard too many stories about unmarked vehicles who pulled over for one and they have blue lights. Yeah, but all unmarked vehicles have blue lights. I heard stories about people being kidnapped. So, so why not just, you know, do the speed limit, put your four-ways on, call in, make sure it was a real stop or something. Or go to a public area. I don't know. Instead of, you know, going 130 plus and then when they terminated, why do you continue to still fly by everybody? cuz at that point I'm an Africanamean male and I ran from the real police. Okay. All right, man. Well, obviously I'm just going to let you you know your mandates. Okay. You let your name sound anything you say kind against you in court? Understand all that? One of the victims tells officers that the driver had recently undergone open heart surgery and the situation might be more serious than it initially appeared. While officers handcuff Elijah and take his statements, the young man claims he fled because he got scared when an unmarked vehicle pulled him over. fearing he'd be attacked simply because he's African-Amean. Elijah had reached a speed of 120 mph and after the chase he collided with another vehicle which was enough for the officers to arrest him but his reasoning doesn't seem very convincing to the officers. Is there anything besides the 721 in the vehicle? No. Okay. What were they stopping you for to begin with? What were you doing? I have no idea. I was driving. You were just driving? I I I might have not like you know how you just stop a little bit at a stop sign. Okay. You might have rolled through a stop sign. Yeah, that's what it's called. All this because you rolled through a stop sign. Man, that's dumb. All right. Dumb decisions right now. Just leg pain. And so am I going to Lake County or Astroia? We're in Lake County right now. So most likely going to be Lake County. Where'd you do the gun, man? I didn't have one. You They said they watched you throw one out the window. No, sir. You never had it. Why you you had a holster? Was the holster always empty or you just carry a holster around or what? It's not mine. Well, okay. So, was the Was there a gun in the vehicle that wasn't yours that you threw out? No, there was no gun in the vehicle. She never had a weapon in the vehicle? Never. So, if we find a weapon, they said you threw out. If we find one, then then what? It's not mine. It's not yours, but you got a holster. And they said they seen a weapon come out of the vehicle. They ain't seen no weapon come out of this. Okay. You ran from us. Why? Why did y'all pull me over? Why did you run from us? Because I was scared of the vehicle. Okay. All right. Why'd you run from them? Because at at that point, it was the real police. I'm an Africanamean male. Well, our charges are going to show you that we are the real police. Okay. So, when you go to prison on our charges, you'll understand we are the real police. All right. All right. My my decision. I made a bad decision. You can have all those excuses you want, but you see what? See that person right there in that car? There's no Whatever you want. You guys want to take them on yours or we take them on ours? However you guys want to skid it. Uh, let me wait till my supervisor's coming. Let me see what they want to do. Perfect. I don't want to make the, you know, make the call and then they, you know, I get it. I know it works. Absolutely. It's a person in that vehicle. Okay. So they're both excuse me shaking up a lot. The one guy has as of right now. I'm going to go check out Elijah's answers don't add up. He denies having any weapons in the vehicle, but minutes later patrols had seen him throw a weapon out the window. His statements are inconsistent and it seems absurd to authorities he'd flee just for failing to stop at a stop sign. Something just isn't adding up. They said a 28 unit was coming for the crash. That's what I was told by. I certainly hope so. Where he left it? Oh, right there. I don't remember that. I don't know why anybody needs to do a crash. It's all part of your case. Yep. That's what they said. You guys You guys take Where you guys taking? West. Yeah. West. Uh West. Okay. I don't know. I'm crash county. So So it's uh you believe it's true and 91. Lake West. And you think it's going to be lifethreatening or serious injury? Uh it's hard to say. So I'd go with serious right now, but they're kind of dozing out. So could be concussion, it could be brain. So Okay. So, serious injury uh Lake West, you said? Yes. 1159 warrant. Both occupants of the first vehicle are being transported to Lake West. Serious injury. Yeah. So, this there's no crash here then, right? It's all it's all just on the case. [Applause] Whatever. They have a bunch of charges on them. So, APD does. So, what what happened? So, they were making a traffic stop. AD was making a traffic stop on He said he might have rolled through a stop sign. They terminated at 90. They were going east uh westbound on a 90. Terminated it. I go to pull out to go see if I can, you know, make kind of he flies by on the left shoulder passing everybody. So, and then uh obviously didn't didn't stop for me. So, talking with paramedics and taking photos of evidence, officers discuss the charges Elijah will face and how they'll proceed with the arrest. The driver of the other vehicle is rushed to the hospital and depending on the severity of their condition, Elijah will face the appropriate charges. Can until we figured out, can one of you guys go with him to the hospital or do we have a unit that can go to the hospital and just stay? Let me check with uh 28. Okay. All right. Thanks, buddy. Yep. You uh they want APD wants to know if we have somebody to go with them. Where would you guys like him to go to? Are you from Asheville County? Yes. RJ, let me see if they want to go to a trauma center or not with him if that meets that criteria. They do want somebody to go with them to the hospital if it's possible. So, we have to call. You guys have somebody with him. No, the driver of this, they were asking. So, yeah. Somebody sit with him. We don't have anybody over in our county, but now it's now it's our problem. But you guys are going to charge us that um that's what you said. Yeah, we'll yeah, we'll take him if if uh if he gets released, we'll put him in the city. Y charges clean. Yeah, we're going to have the weapons fleeing and then whatever you guys have. So, we think he got it. 145. Do you have his license? No, I don't. I'm just was just instructed to babysit him. So, uh that I don't know. Are you guys transporting? We are. Okay. What would I would figure that out first and then yeah they want to go to Geneva. So Geneva see what he wants to be under. What would you at impact? Yeah. I mean he slowed down went through the median or the grass um off the I'm going to say I'm going to say at least 50. Take this real quick. Okay. Yeah. And were they moving? Yes, they were coming they were coming south. Okay. Yeah. So yeah, I would say I would say at least 50 if not maybe a little faster cuz he hit that off ramp probably like 100. What are you trying to stop for? Uh it was a pursuit from APD for a stop sign and a bunch of other stuff I guess and then they terminated at 90 and 11 and I was on a 75 with Chuck. So I pull out and as I'm pulling out around him to go turn around and try to he flies by on the shoulder passing everybody. No, his sister Mariah Scholston is the registered owner. Elijah yet. [Music] You guys taking this? We will. Okay. You have Okay. I took a photo of this. I don't know if you guys knew where it was or anything. I was going to go grab my evidence bags if you guys want. Nope. We got it. You guys sticking around to see what's in here or We are. Yeah. Okay. I don't I just policy to release directly to us. We'll take whatever we find of evidential value. Okay. Do you know when mile marker you threw the gun out at? We got a vape. They're just a vape. Yeah. Back on. We got it. Oh, okay. You're uh Yeah, this will be his right side. You put an X or circle or what? Collecting evidence, officers conduct a more thorough search of the responsible vehicle and find marijuana and a vape in the front seats. Authorities need to inspect every part of the car if possible and find any evidence that justifies Elijah's reaction when he saw the police. Something is off and they can't overlook any details. Records are coming. We're going to sketch it. Fox is on his way. Get it out of here. We'll be done. Now, I'm not filing charges with them. We're just going to let APD file all the charges. They have all the same charges. We'll have to see though if they're going to file the traffic portion. Okay. This guy right here. You know what I mean? They might file the criminal stuff cuz I don't know about traffic. The initial appear initial stop was the traffic. So what do they have? They have their traffic. Yeah. For who was the initial you you went stopping them initially? So you want to do the felony fleeing and can we do that in with cuz it's almost like a separate cuz we broke I don't know where everybody else picked it back up as soon as you guys terminated. I pulled out from behind truck and he went flying by me. So it was almost like I would say not even a minute. You guys traffic's up by 90. Okay. I saw the truck coming out of here. Okay. Here's this. Was there anything else in the car? Uh, yeah. There was some dabs and stuff. So, I'm going to let Deucy know. We picked up off the shoot. You were behind it when it crashed. Yeah, I was coming off the off the ramp. All right. Something like that. He was trying to make a left. I don't know what he was doing. I This guy was coming straight this way. I think I think he may have been trying to go back on back on 90, I think. But I don't I don't know. Look at the video cuz the impact happened right here. So I don't All right. We can figure that out when you look at the video. You probably able to see it. Reviewing the events, the officers discussed the charges Elijah will face. It all started when Elijah ignored a traffic sign, then fled when a police vehicle attempted to stop him, reaching a speed of 120 mph before crashing into a van on State Route 528, leaving one of the victims injured. We're dealing with felony fleeing an aggravated vehicular assault. So, I'm assuming our uh our thing to do our white cars are victim. Yeah. How bad are they boogered up? I don't know. They I think they said they were going to lifellight him, but they said it would probably be faster for them to transport him. I don't know where they transported him. I don't know the injury. This dude was okay. You know, he's going to sit there and they're going to take whatever they're going to do. Is this who is this who the driver? Okay. So they related to his vehicle. It's his grandma. Well, that comes back to was like youth sister. Oh, he said it was his grandma. Maybe from the youth then. Yeah. He said that was a car was a Christmas or a graduation present from his grandma. It was in his grandma's name. So he told me. Oh, okay. So I don't know. I didn't look. Yeah. Young like Ryan or whatever. But um hey, can you get uh her this at fault individual's sister's phone number so we can look for no river vehicles at you guys all set? I believe so. Okay. I'll talk to Sergeant See if he wants me to stay or whatever. Yeah, I got to talk to him anyway. So, okay. And then we are still we're charging too now. Yeah, we're Well, yeah. Uh Aaron said is going to contact Cecilia in the morning. Okay. Um, I'm going to put in here that, you know, we'll both have charges, but Felton will follow up in the morning, okay, to see what's going on. The sheriff's department picked it up from AP. So, I'm I'm standing next to Chuck. He's at that girl in the back there just, you know, waiting to see what's going on with his stuff. And they called they're in pursuit. So, I go back to my car, get in the car. Soon as I close my door, they said they were terminating. Uh, APD APD was terminating. Okay. Well, I'll pull out. I'll turn around. I'll go see if I can, you know, see the car. And that's when I asked about a description and they didn't have anything. And as soon as I pulled out to go around Chuck, I started speed up and it was a car in the left lane and then that car pass flies by on the shoulder. This guy. So, was the sheriff's department in it at all? Yes. So, as I'm catching up to him, he's taking off. I mean, I'm getting out to speed to catch him. I get behind him enough to keep up with him until I want to stay right right towards the county line. Uh, I seen in in the distance there was lights up there. I knew somebody was up there. I just don't know who was up there. And then once we got closer, they pulled out and I seen it was it was so then they became primary they got behind him. And but both of you were in it. Yes. Okay. They got behind them and then once we got up so far once I finished catching up to them then he pulled off to the side we had to go around a semi cuz some I don't know what he was doing. So we went around the semi. He's he pulled off the road. I went by him and I was just trying to catch back up to him. And then when I seen him, it was three cars and we slowed down here for the ramps. I thought he looked like he was going to take the exit ramp, but I couldn't see. No. So he did, but but where we were at, I couldn't see the X- ramp anymore. I know he went behind two semis and I was like, he's getting on ramp. So I slowed down enough and then I seen the hole and I was like, "Okay, he did." So I cut across and then when I entered the ramp is when I seen him come through the grass and cars hit him. And then I pulled up. Um when I I pulled up, stopped here, he was getting out. I jumped out, grabbed the gun, grabbed my gun out, pointed them at him. He had his hands up, got down on the ground. We made contact. They still ended up cuffing him up a little bit. So, but you actually saw when you hit this car. Yes. Yes. So, they should be I mean, if the dash cam working up, you should be able to see on the dash cam. All right. Cool. But depending on the angle. Yes. Coming up off the ramp. Yes. But yeah, I I seen the whole thing. That's my final 31. Uh so, yeah. And I heard that. So, all right. Okay, then I'm going to jump in and upload that and get that the photo at least upload before I take off. Okay. Yep. Elijah Schultz, age 19, is arrested and transported to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries. He faces felony charges of fleeing and aggravated vehicular assault as well as reckless driving. According to the investigation, he has a criminal record and he's looking at years in prison, probation, or restitution depending on the specifics of the crime and his prior criminal
