Esquivel had a history of prior arrests including violent offenses, enough that officers already knew him by his nickname, Siko. [music] Officers pulled him from the vehicle and began CPR before being rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. >> [music] >> Toxicology later revealed a methamphetamine level of 530 ng/mL, a concentration associated with extreme agitation and violent unpredictable [music] behavior. Following the incident, the San Jose Police Department's Internal Affairs Unit conducted a full review of the officers' use of force. The investigation [music] determined the officers' actions were within policy, citing the immediate and deadly threat Esquivel posed when he used the vehicle as a weapon. The officer who was struck by Esquivel, Sergeant James [music] Mason, survived after being crushed between the cars, but the impact left him with multiple pelvic fractures, broken bones in both legs, internal injuries, [music] and long-term mobility damage. After several surgeries and months of rehabilitation, his injuries were determined to be career-ending, bringing his 17 years with the San Jose Police Department to a close. Now years later, in the same exact apartment complex, different officers [music] once again find themselves fighting for their lives as they're suddenly ambushed BY GUNFIRE. >> I GOT YOU. I GOT YOU. [music] He was taken into custody and treated for his injuries, where he would ultimately go on to survive. [music] Despite firing multiple rounds at officers, no officers were struck by gunfire. Villareal was later charged with attempted murder of a peace officer, assault [music] with a firearm on a peace officer, discharging a firearm at an occupied vehicle, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and several firearm use enhancements. He ultimately pled guilty and [music] was later sentenced to 32 years in state prison.
